Iron ore pellet feed pressing has been one of the first and most successful applications of High- Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) in the minerals industry. Vale S.A. has been one of the pioneers in this application, currently with six HPGRs in operation in the pelletising plants of the Complexo de Tubarão (Brazil). In spite of the important advances in the technology, risks still exist when scaling-up the process from small-scale information. The present work takes advantage of the recent advances in the mathematical modelling of the HPGR performance, using the population balance model to evaluate the modified Torres and Casali model prediction in iron ore pellet feed pressing for different scales of operation. Results are presented that compare the HPGR performance in different operational scales for iron ore pellet feed pressing, demonstrating the confidence of this model-based approach for scale-up to full-scale HPGRs used in pressing iron ore concentrates. The susceptibility of experimental low-nickel Cr-Mn-N stainless steels to hot cracking, sensitization, and pitting corrosion in the as-welded condition was investigated. These steels were developed for deep-drawing applications and are similar in composition to type 201 stainless steel. In order to obtain good formability, the rapid rate of work-hardening (characteristic of the 200-series steels) was decreased by the addition of copper. The behaviour of two sets of alloys during fusion welding was investigated: 17Cr-7Mn-4Ni-o.5Cu steels containing 0.001 to 0.27 per cent nitrogen, and 17Cr-7Mn-2Ni-o.1N steels with copper contents varying between 0.01 and 3.11 per cent. Al the steels in these two sets initially solidify as d-ferrite, which transforms partially to austenite during cooling. As the nitrogen level increases, the microstructure of an autogenous-weld metal ranges from large amounts of d -ferrite, martensite, and Widmanstätten austenite, to austenitic structures with small amounts of vermicular d -ferrite. The formation of d -ferrite during solidification and the presence of ferrite retained in the weld metal indicate that the experimental alloys will not be susceptible to hot cracking during welding. Except for the alloy with 0.27 per cent nitrogen, the resistance to pitting corrosion of the experimental steels in the as-welded condition is inferior to that of type 304 stainless steel. None of the experimental steels is susceptible to intergranular attack in the as welded condition. The alloys with 0.19 and 0.27 per cent nitrogen have properties (corrosion and microstructure) similar to those of type 304 stainless steel in the as-welded condition.

"A recent amendment to Section 36(11)(e) of the Income Tax Act, 53 of 1968 (Tax Act) now extends the allowable deduction of ‘capital expenditure’ incurred by mining companies pursuant to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA). In terms of the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill 2016 (TLAB 2016), the allowable deduction has been extended to include expenditure incurred on infrastructure in terms of Social and Labour Plan (SLP) requirements as per the MPRDA. Interestingly, what necessitated the amendment was the need to recognize SLP requirements and to circumvent administrative difficulties for mining companies and the South African Revenue Services (SARS) in differentiating the use of developmental infrastructure by employees or the community. The successful implementation of such a deduction hinges on a sound SLP system. However, given the challenges within the current SLP system, this amendment could be considered somewhat premature. IntroductionSection 36(11) of the Income Tax Act 58 of 1962 (Tax Act) enabled mining companies to deduct certain capital expenditure in lieu of its other sections. In particular, it made provision for mining companies to deduct capital expenditure incurred pursuant to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA), but excluding capital expenditure incurred in respect of infrastructure or environmental rehabilitation. As such, mining companies could only deduct such capital expenditure that related directly to their employees and not to the wider community (Clegg, 2018).In terms of the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill 2016 (TLAB, 2016) (South Africa, 2016a), the recent amendment to Section 36 extends the relief provided under section 36(11)(e) to include capital expenditure incurred on infrastructure in terms of the Social and Labour Plan (SLP) requirements of the MPRDA. In other words, the capital expenditure incurred by the mining company for the benefit of the people living in mining communities. To qualify for such a deduction, the infrastructure erected or developed by the mining company should reflect what was agreed between the mining company and the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) as per the SLP requirements of the MPRDA (TLAB 2016)."

"Through the application of the Rietveld method, X-ray diffraction analysis has developed into a fully quantitative method for phase analysis. The Rietveld method itself has progressed from an unstable method that required constant operator intervention to a stable and robust method suited even for routine analysis. The method however, requires a good initial calibration and periodic checks on its precision and accuracy.Several examples from minerals processing, pyrometallurgy, and materials science show the strengths and applicability of the method. The limitations and sources of error are also discussed.1. IntroductionDiffraction of X-rays by matter has been used for more than 80 years, initially to elucidate the structure of crystalline matter, and to investigate the bonding between atoms. The first development of powder diffraction cameras and the later development of X-ray diffractometers saw the development of methods to identify phases and to try to quantify them in mixtures. A comprehensive database and search-match techniques have been developed over the ensuing years. Effective and accurate quantification had to wait for the so-called Rietveld' analysis where the total diffraction pattern is used and where the crystal structure data for the constituent phases are needed as input. Overlapping of diffraction peaks of different phases is handled without difficulty and reliable results can be obtained in spite of this occurrence.The development of methods for structure analysis from powder data has also progressed rapidly and more and more complex structures are being solved from first principles, i.e. without knowledge of unit cell or space group data. Because of the ease of use of the Rietveld method, it is finding increased application in metallurgy, especially in the quantification of phases of importance in minerals processing, in pyrometallurgical processes, and in materials characterization. This study will examine the principles of the Rietveld method, its application in metallurgy, and finally also the common pitfalls that need to be avoided.2. Rietve1d AnalysisAs the Rietveld method compares the experimental diffraction pattern with one calculated from known crystal structure data, the following data are needed:•,An XRD Pattern with as Iowa background as possible. This should have good resolution and high diffraction peak intensities. With modem X-ray detectors, this can be achieved in minutes rather than hours.•,Instrumental parameters such as goniometer radii and slit sizes are needed. These are the so-called ""Fundamental parameters"". They are used to calculate the shapes of the resultant diffraction peak profiles that are caused by the instrument. The parameters are used to correctly separate the instrumental effects on the diffraction pattern from the sample effects."

Recent developments in survey techniques and measuring equipment now allow for an accurate assessment of external coating condition and cathodic protection performance. These developments build on 20 years of experience of using Direct Current Voltage Gradient (DCVG) and Close Interval Potential Survey (CIPS) methods. The techniques use the latest advances in measurement systems coupled to a bespoke data processing system. The paper describes tests and trial surveys carried out on a hydrocarbon transmission pipeline in West Africa during 2005. The survey works described and conclusions drawn are from the data collected. Of particular interest are the apparent capacitance effects which are thought to occur under disbonded coating and the characteristics that these may show on the integrated CIPS and recorded DCVG profiles. This paper was originally presented at the Cefracor conference in Aix, France, in June 2006 The pipeline was originally installed on a phased basis between 1989 and 1994. The external coatings were three layer polyethylene factory coating and shrink sleeve field joint coating. An impressed current cathodic protection system was installed. The pipeline has subsequently been affected by disbondment of the coatings. It was a primary objective of the trials to attempt to identify such affected areas. In addition to a technically detailed account of the survey works undertaken and the results obtained the authors will consider the practical and commercial aspects of these surveys with input that provides a perspective from the specifier, pipeline surveyor, pipeline operations personnel and the pipeline owner. It is intended that the data presented will provide greater awareness of the benefits and limitations of the techniques used and their role for both stand-alone interpretation and the integration of the survey information with other inspection methods used for external corrosion assessment. The application of the described techniques is well developed and proven to locate and characterise through?coating defects and to provide a full audit of cathodic protection status. However, the possibility of the techniques being able to indicate disbonded coating is unproven and further tests and trials are planned which may allow a greater understanding of the electrical characteristics which are believed to be associated with disbonded coatings which may or may not be filled with an electrolyte. Further work is currently planned in West Africa, South Africa and Scotland in order to improve the understanding of this technique and to determine if the reported indications do actually represent a method of locating disbonded coatings. High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are employed in cement plants worldwide. Although the technology has been mastered in the majority of applications, design-, scale-up- and operationalchallenges still exist today. In addition to modelling throughput, energy requirement and comminution success, the prediction and avoidance of malfunctions is of great importance in current research. The performance of the mill is highly influenced by the roll speed and the fineness of the feed material. Another parameter influencing the composition of mill feed is the circulating load, which is determined by the grinding circuit configuration, the target fineness and the separation efficiency of the classifier. In order to meet this circumstance and simultaneously maintain a reasonable level of material input and testing effort, a complete grinding circuit on a small technical scale was set up in the research centre of Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions AG. The present study varied the roll speed (0.5-2 m/s) and the proportion of fines in the feed (0-75 %) in order to investigate the influence of both parameters on the finish grinding of a Portland cement with a target fineness of 4000 cm²/g according to Blain. Applied geophysical methods such as the surface seismic method have been applied for many years and in many places, mainly for oil exploration and to a lesser extent for mineral deposits? exploration in sedimentary basins. The seismic method fundamental is based on the variations of acoustic impedance in a layered earth model and such variations at each main geological interface create reflected waves that are processed and imaged in order to output a clear picture of the subsurface structure. The geology of South Africa was historically, and even until recently, considered as unfit for seismic exploration and the mines were always reluctant to spend any portions of their exploration budgets on these techniques. Hard rocks and high P-waves velocities were creating quite a hopeless model for any mine geologist or geophysicist (if any), unsuitable for the proper use of seismic waves to image their subsurface problems. Boreholes were considered the only reliable tool to derive a geological image of the mine structural features and were linked sometimes with surface methods such as aero-magnetism. The obvious flaw of this methodology was the inability to derive a continuous image from a discrete set of measurement points. Surface 3D seismic is the tool that gives a reliable solution from the initial model extracted from the boreholes, as even the aero-magnetism mapping gives a flat image, unable to show any depth correlation from well to well. The first 3D surface seismic surveys were recorded in the early Nineties only for the gold mines of the Witwatersrand, after a series of serious new shaft sinking failures. The wrong geological locations of these shafts resulted in financial loss of several hundred million rands. The era of3D seismic just started in South Africa and till 1997, all seismic done in the country was for gold exploration with geological target depths close to the oil exploration average depth of investigation. A very important breakthrough was reached when the depth accuracy of the seismic image was tested in real scale as the stopes were surveyed. An error of amplitude of 20 m was usual when true depth was compared with the seismic image predicted depth and shape. This accuracy, completely unknown in oil exploration, started to gain supporters of seismic methods in the mining community but the cash problems and the concentration/disappearance of gold mines in the late Nineties, led to the belief that seismic would be just a very short exploration activity for the mining sector. ort exploration activity for the mining sector. But starting in 1998 with Impala, a tremendous and continuous 3D surface seismic activity occurred in the platinum mining sector. The seismic world got used to new terms such a Merensky and UG2, which have replaced the VCR and black reef. If the primary expectation of platinum surface 3D seismic was to determine and ascertain new shaft locations, as for the gold mines, the quality of seismic data led the mine geologists to require smaller and smaller imaging of geological objects. In addition to the main structural image, small faults, potholes, and shear zone were common expectations of platinum seismic. In a constant velocity environment, what saved the day was the sharp density contrast between the PGM reef and the embedding geology. A good contrast of impedance exists in the whole Bushveld and is sufficient to have enough reflected waves from the PGM main layers to build a high quality seismic image of the subsurface. Recent advances in technology have led in less than 10years to major improvements in the seismic acquisition by using high frequency vibrating seismic sources, but also in processing and interpretation. With these latest improvements, seismic can detect objects of 7.5 m size, either fault throws, flexures, etc. The PGM formations of the Eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex are now accessible for seismic imaging, with cost per square kilometre comparable to the borehole cost of the same surface unit. The economically acceptable seismic surveys can be used for UG2 structural imaging up to a depth of 210 m below surface. Linked with borehole information, 3D seismic today offers a wide range of information for mine development: structural imaging, small fault detection, pothole and shear zone identification. All users of 3D seismic have also used this technique as a tool in the process to qualify their mineral reserves and especially from the category ?inferred? to the category ?measured?. Junior mining companies, in the feasibility stage of their projects, are also quite eager to use seismic as a reserve certification tool, when they present financial statements to future potential investors. The current high demand on platinum, pushes the seismic towards new technologies to be implemented in order to improve the final image. Using surface and borehole seismic together or acquiring seismic surveys with multi-component receivers have been just introduced in South Africa. In less than 10 years, surface seismic by adapting its methods to the special case of the Bushveld, became a mandatory step in mine development and ore resources evaluation. As part of the ?seismic? world we are proud to be a major player the ?surge? of platinum exploration and production in these last years and we will certainly increase our synergy with the mine sectors in the exciting coming years.

For practical reasons all basic input data for the gold mines of the Anglovaal Group conform to a regular grid of averages of sample values within 25-ft squares in the plane of the ore body; individual sample values with their metric co-ordinates are input and converted by a computer program to the basic 25-ft square averages. At the Prieska copper mine the bore- hole data are forced on to a regular grid of 15-m squares corresponding to the coordinates of the grid points nearest to the actual borehole intersections. As for the gold mines the Prieska ore body, although some 3 to 30 m thick, is also dealt with on a two-dimensional basis (Krige, 1973). On the gold mines the data subjected to geostatistical analysis cover: gold values (in cm g/t), uranium values (cm kg/t), and channel widths (cm). The gold and uranium values are normalised on the basis of log (value plus constant) and all the geostatistical analyses are performed on these transformed values. The channel widths usually conform reasonably well to the normal distribution and are, therefore, not transformed. At Prieska the metal grades analysed cover the two main products, copper and zinc, as well as the impurities lead and bismuth; in addition the specific gravity values and the hanging- and foot-wall deviations from a projection plane are also handled. These were all previously used on an untransformed basis but because of problems associated with the proportional effect the lognormal-de Wijsian model is now used for some of the grade variables. Students shall be persons not less than 18 years of age who are being educated or trained in a manner approved by the Council, to occupy a technical position in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries and who, furthermore, shall not have attained the qualification required for a higher grade of membership. They may remain Students until they have obtained the necessary qualifications for transfer to a higher grade of membership, but not after the end of the Institute's financial year in which they attain the age of 28 (twenty-eight) years. They shall then transfer to a higher grade to retain membership of the Institute. The Council may relax the provisions of this clause in such cases as it considers appropriate. However, very little is beneficiated locally and more than 95 percent is exported with little or no value addition. Zircon is a very inert material and needs to undergo high-temperature alkaline melting processes to produce valuable zirconium products. The conversion of zircon to plasma-dissociated zircon (PDZ) produces a chemically reactive species (ZrO2.SiO2) which consist of finely divided submicron monoclinic ZrO2 crystals dispersed in a SiO2 matrix. In this paper, an in-flight, non-transferred arc pilot plasma plant with a capacity of 100 kg/h and which consists of three 150 kW DC plasma torches, is described. The optimization of the plant, which includes the use of different zircon concentrates, the influence of particle size, feed rates, plasma gas, and energy utilization, is discussed.

"SynopsisThis study proposes a methodology for evaluating the risk of coal bumps in multiple-seam longwall mining. Both the stress field and the total energy release (TER) during retreat were evaluated in the specified case involving multiple-seam mining using the LaModel program. The results of numerical simulations indicated that both the peak vertical stresses on the panel edges and the peak TERs in the outby longwalls increased significantly as the horizontal offsets were reduced from 60 m to zero. With the comprehensive consideration of the stress field and TERs, a conservative offset of 60 m was ultimately adopted when developing the gateroads of the lower panel in the field. The field measurements indicated that coal bumps were avoided completely by employing the proposed design, and the maximum roof-to-floor and rib-to-rib convergences of the tailgate during retreat were only 360 mm and 576 mm, respectively.IntroductionCoal bumps – sudden, violent bursts of coal – pose a serious threat to the safe excavation of coal. Their occurrence depends on the properties of the surrounding rocks, stress field, and dynamic disturbance. The complexity of the mechanism of coal bumps is further enhanced in multiple-seam mining due to seam interaction. Multiple-seam mining is most frequently found in the coalfields in eastern China, such as Xuzhou, Xinwen, Zaozhuang, and Huainan. In the past, due to issues of availability, economics, and ignorance of the potential risk in multipleseam mining, coal seams in such conditions were mined without proper planning to account for seam interaction. Fortunately, studies published over the past three decades have raised awareness of the problems associated with multiple-seam mining, and indicated that the ground control issues induced by multiple-seam mining can be avoided and/or minimized with proper planning.A number of technical studies pertaining to the design of multiple-seam mines have been published. These studies can be divided into two groups based on their methodologies of design: empirical (Chekan and Listak, 1993; Haycocks and Zhou, 1990, Matetic et al.; 1987a, 1987b) and numerical approaches (Li et al., 2000; Maleki, 2007; Mark, 2007; Peng, 2007; Zipf, 2005). The majority of the extant studies on the interaction mechanisms in multiple-seam mining have focused on the load transfer during operation, resulting in the proposal of the pressure bulb theory (Forrest et al., 1987; Haycocks and Karmis, 1983; Peng, 2008; Peng and Chandra, 1980) and pressure arch theory (Holland, 1973; Oram and Ponder, 1997) to guide multiple-seam mine design. However, neither, of these theories can be used to evaluate the potential for coal bumps."

Main haulage roads play an important role in the performance of underground mines because of the cost of transportation of the extracted ore, equipment, and workers. During mine development, these roads are designed through manual tools or CAD-based software. However, the optimisation of these roads is still a complex problem due to some constraints such as minimum turning radius and maximum gradient. By utilising Dubins path theory, three elevation cases; namely low, medium and high are defined, considering gradient constraint as well as the minimum turning radius in a three-dimensional space. The shortest path between two points can then be found by the three-dimensional Dubins path algorithm with elevation constraint. As a further step, a three-dimensional Dubins path algorithm with elevation constraint for multiple points is also developed for multi-point cases. The effectiveness of these algorithms is tested through case studies in order to determine the optimal path between different points.

"In open pit dozer bulk push operations, the material left resting against the highwall after blasting poses an issue. This is because dozers cannot physically get in behind the waste to begin the bulk pushing process. Instead, an excavator can be used to side-cast this waste for the dozers to access. An alternative technique is to have the dozers ‘side-cut’ the material, which involves the dozers running parallel to the wall, digging out the material, and eventually rotating their blades to begin bulk pushing. Industry practices suggest the latter technique is less productive and economical than using an excavator. However, such excavator sidecasting ‘economic viability’ assumes that smaller/ancillary type excavators are used (i.e. less than 23 m3 bucket capacity). So, what happens if some mine sites are restricted to using relatively larger excavators (> 23 m3 bucket) that are preferred for higher priority digging tasks? When can they avoid using their excavator? This paper explores multiple scenarios that have been designed and developed to simulate data results, which identify conditions in which the dozer side-cutting technique becomes more economically viable than excavator side-casting in terms of decreased unit cost per loose cubic metre. IntroductionOptimizing the cost of waste removal operations is important for the profitability of opencast coal mines. In the past decade, dozer bulk pushing has emerged and taken over from traditional waste removal operations such as dragline and truck-and-shovel methods at various sites around the world (Beatty, 1994). In a typical bulk push operation, once the bench has been blasted, waste is left resting against the highwall, which can either be cleared using a loading unit or by having the dozers ‘side-cut’ the highwall.Dozers perform most effectively when slot dozing side-by-side, perpendicular to the highwall. However, when dozers are required to remove material off the highwall, they must push parallel to the highwall, rather than perpendicular, hence ‘side-cutting’ the material to ensure a clean face. While dozer sidecutting is possible, it has been found that the majority of mine sites use a loading unit in this situation to avoid dozer inefficiency. Other perceived issues with dozer side-cutting include higher maintenance requirements and safety risks to dozer operators working in close proximity to the highwall."

An approach to the design of a tailings disposal system is presented using an example from a platinum project on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex as a base case. The design is driven by two inputs: namely, maximizing water recovery and minimizing power cost, expressed as cubic metres and kilowatts per ton of solids deposited on the tailings storage facility respectively. The approach considers low-, medium-, and high-density platinum tailings and uses material-specific aspects such as thickening and rheology to determine the most economical option. An analysis based on direct capital and operating cost (water and electricity) shows that the medium-density scenario results in the lowest total cost per ton of tailings deposited, even though this system results in the highest electricity consumption per ton of tailings deposited. As the cost of water and electricity is likely to increase in the future, the higher-density tailings disposal options become more economical, with the paste option the preferred option.

Grade Engineering® is a term trademarked by the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) and includes five key levers for upgrading ores and rejecting waste prior to expensive downstream comminution and mineral processing. These five levers include natural deportment, induced deportment, bulk sorting, particle sorting and gravity separation. Over the past ten years, CRC ORE has progressed a range of technologies that exploit these levers from laboratory proof of concept through to large scale demonstration and validation. This paper details the work carried out by CRC ORE and Curtin University for assessing the amenability of an ore for its natural deportment and particle sorting attributes in an Integrated Screening and Particle Sorting (ISPS) Grade Engineering® process. ISPS is seen as a preferred method for Grade Engineering® as compared to individually operated unit operations as the benefits of each can be complementary. Furthermore, it is suggested that integrating the two levers has two important impacts: 1. Firstly, there is a risk that isolated particle sorting test results will be misinterpreted as being representative of the full sample without considering the mass balance impact of high-grade material that might have been lost in the fines fraction. This fine fraction will not be detected through the particle sorter. 2. Secondly, and potentially of more valuable impact, is that the opportunity may exist to upgrade the feed first through determining if there is a concentration of high grade to the fine (or coarse) fraction which can be separated through screening. Undertaking screening in the preparation stage of the particle sorting process will enable analysis and separation of the fine or coarse fractions of a rock mass. The result of this study provides the mining industry with an independent framework for undertaking an Order of Magnitude (ISPS) Grade Engineering® assessment on a range of constituent ore types.
