High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) as an efficient grinding technology plays a major role in mineral processing plants. Investigating the effects of this technology on different parts of mineral processing circuits reveals this technology’s capability. In this paper, HPGR grinding effects on an iron ore beneficiation circuit, in comparison with conventional crushing systems were studied. A representative feed sample was taken from an iron ore beneficiation plant, then crushed to minus 6 mm in a laboratory by two methods: HPGR and cone crusher, and finally a concentrate plant circuit was simulated. Plant simulation was performed by doing laboratory tests consisting of grinding, magnetic separation, flotation and filtration on HPGR and cone crusher products, respectively. According to comminution tests results, in particle sizes smaller than 6 mm, a cone crusher product is coarser than an HPGR product. Also, the Bond ball mill work index of the HPGR product was 10% less than the crusher product. Therefore, based on the Bond formula in applying HPGR, ball mill power consumption decreased by 12%. After ball milling to minus 100 microns, magnetic separation tests results showed that the recovery of the cone crusher circuit output was 90.8% and the product Fe grade was 66.4%. For the HPGR circuit these figures were 87.6% and 67.3%, respectively. Therefore, by using an HPGR, a higher Fe grade of the final concentrate was achieved. A flotation test was then performed on the magnetic separation concentrate, where the results showed that the crusher circuit recovery and the sulfur grade of the product were 96.5% and 0.192%, respectively; whereas the HPGR circuit recovery was 97.2% with a sulfur content of 0.185%. Findings revealed that flotation performance in the HPGR circuit was more efficient than the crusher circuit. Vacuum filtration tests on concentrate produced through the HPGR circuit resulted in a moisture content of 12% that was 2% higher than the crusher circuit’s concentrate in the same condition. "Excessive amounts of moisture in product coal can influence the efficiency of downstream utilization processes due to a decreased calorific value and handling problems. Stockpiles can be used to decrease the moisture content of coal by means of gravity drainage and evaporation. This paper is focused on the evaporation of moisture from a coal stockpile surface with the aim of investigating the effect of particle size on the rate of evaporation as well as the depth to which evaporation extends.It was observed that moisture initially evaporates at a higher rate from a stockpile consisting of fine particles (-6.7 mm) than from coarser particles (-13.2 mm +6.7 mm). This high rate of evaporation is restricted to the outer shell of the fine coal stockpile. However, for coarse coal, the porous nature increases the depth at which evaporation occurs. Evaporation of moisture was observed up to the fourth day of each experimental run, after which steady state was obtained. It was shown the water can evaporate from the surface into the body of the stockpile, depending on the coal particle size and void spacing. An experimental reclaim depth of 0.4 m was achieved after 4 days. The effectiveness of wind and solar action can be improved by orienting the stockpile perpendicular to the predominant wind direction, maximizing the surface area of the pile, and reclaiming the coal from the pile gradually in shallow cuts over a large area (Williams, D.J. 2006)."

Spiral concentrators are widely used in the coal industry treating fine (-1mm) coal. Their application was a limitation to the product quality until the introduction of low-cut spirals which allow a lower quality ash product to be produced, thus expanding the market. The Exxaro Grootegeluk 1 (GG1) plant has a two-stage traditional rougher-cleaner spiral circuit using conventional SX4 spirals to produce semi-soft coking coal product at 12.5% ash by mass. The overall plant product is 10.3% ash meaning that the coarser sized coal dense medium separation circuits must compensate. A low density cut-point spiral targetting 10.3% ash would thus be beneficial to the overall complex. The spirals were tested in the two-stage plant environment and in a pilot plant. This paper discusses the findings and compares a two stage four-turn low density cut and conventional spiral. The two spiral technologies were unable to sustain a 10.3% ash product. Pilot test work was also conducted on GG1 coal, demonstrating that an eight-turn low density cut-point spiral achieves the targetted 10.3% ash under controlled conditions. A three-day symposium on the production of clean steel organized by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was held in September 1995 at Vanderbijlpark. It was attended by 151 delegates, who represented the whole of the steel industry in South Africa: Iscor Works, Saldanha Steel, Columbus Stainless, Highveld Steel & Vanadium, Iscor Research & Development, University of Pretoria, and Technikon Witwatersrand, as well as the users of steel products were represented. Professor Allan Cramb held the delegates attention with well-presented research and practical information. He obtained excellent interaction with the delegates by responding in depth to the questions put to him during the Symposium. In summary, he emphasized the following aspects of the elimination of defects during the processing of steel in continuously cast materials.

In many respects a porphyry copper ore concentrator plant can be considered as a simple system. Chalcopyrite typically liberates well at relatively coarse sizes, and even low grade ores are amenable to upgrading 20 to 30 times to produce concentrate grades in excess of 25 % in very simple Rougher- Regrind-Cleaner+Scavenger flotation circuits. The flotation response of chalcopyrite has been well characterised in many fundamental and applied research studies and the conditions necessary to depress pyrite and other floating gangue species are well understood. But what happens to the particle surfaces when you have a 50 km pipeline between the grinding circuit and the flotation plant? How does the seasonal variation in water quality affect your ability to control pulp chemistry? What impact does the relative concentration of the different sulphide species have on their separability? Why do two plants that receive nominally the same ore produce consistently different results? And most importantly, what do you need to do to improve the performance of both plants? To answer these and other questions, a focussed sampling and analysis programme was carried out at the Las Tórtolas flotation plants in 2018 and 2019. The work included full down-the-bank sampling, hot floats, the use of radioactive tracers for determining residence time distribution profiles, gas dispersion measurements, detailed mineralogy by size across the circuits and multiple regrind surveys. This comprehensive study was augmented by analysis of historical mineralogy, geometallurgy and operating data using modern data science techniques, and has provided the foundation for current and future optimisation initiatives. Dundee Precious Metals Inc. (DPM) owns and operates the Ada Tepe gold mine and processing facility (previously referred to as the Krumovgrad Gold Project) located in south-western Bulgaria. The Ada Tepe mine became the first green filed project in past 40 year in Balkans and one of the few in Europe when it was commissioned during the first half of 2019. The plant produces a high-grade gold silicate concentrate generated through its comminution circuit and staged floatation reactors (SFR’s) while depositing its tailings in a state-of-the-art Integrated Mine Waste Facility (IMWF). This paper presents the successful commissioning, ramp-up and optimization of the Ada Tepe processing plant and how the various challenges, including that of an inexperienced front-line workforce, were overcome. More specifically addressing how the implemented modern processing technologies and the operational readiness program, supported the people and process to achieve the design parameters safely and consistently. Klipspruit Colliery is experiencing coal losses, which leads to a negative impact on coal production and subsequently loss in revenue. This study aimed to identify the possible causes of coal losses in the No. 4 upper and lower seams. The objectives were to identify potential sources of coal losses through a literature survey, to identify areas where the coal losses occurred, to determine factors affecting coal losses, and to identify the most cost-effective methods to reduce coal losses. Highwall losses, top-of-coal losses, and coal edge losses were identified as the major areas of coal loss at Klipspruit. These losses were mostly attributed to the drilling and blasting practises of the pre-split, interburden waste, and the coal seams. Recommendations include re-visiting the current pre-split design and the tolerances adopted for the interburden and coal seam drilling and blasting design. It is furthermore recommended that Klipspruit implement a continuous improvement plan for the drilling and blasting and refresher training for the blasting crew and operators.

Fluid-bed technology is a key pyrometallurgical step for processing a vast number of ores and concentrates. Over the past 50 years, considerable research and development efforts have been made by Metso Outotec to expand the application window of this technology. This paper illustrates different processing routes where fluid-bed technology plays an important role in the production of the copper. The fluid-bed processes utilized are partial, sulfate-producing, and dead roasting. The focus of this paper considers the advantages of the dead-roasting process. This “zero waste” process can provide copper oxides, steam, electrical power, and sulfuric acid for new and existing solvent extraction–electrowinning plants. In a case where an operation is running out of oxidic ores and concentrates, fluid-bed roasting can be applied to close this gap and provide the required copper oxides in a sustainable way.

Embankment dams are often constructed on soft rock foundations in Japan, so it is important to precisely predict deformation of the foundations due to fill placement at the design stage. In order to accurately evaluate the settlement and the strain of the rock foundation surface during construction, the influence of the scattering of the deformability of foundations on the deformation behaviour should be investigated. In this paper, a method of evaluating the settlement and the strain of the rock foundation surface during construction was studied with stochastic deformation analysis considering the scattering of the deformability of the dam foundation. Based on the analytical results, a dam foundation design using the deterministic method considering the scattering of its deformability was discussed. Da in Japan Uferdämme of auf weichen Felsfundamenten gebaut werden, ist es wichtig, die Verformung der Fundamente auf Grund der Platzierung der Aufschüttungen bereits in der Planungsphase genau vorherzusagen. Im Zusammenhang mit einer genauen Beurteilung der Senkung sowie der Belastung der Felsfundamentoberfläche während der Bauarbeiten sollte auch der Einfluss der Streuung der Verformbarkeit der Fundamente auf das Verformverhalten untersucht werden. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde die Bewertungsmethode zur der Senkung sowie der Belastung der Felsfundamentoberfläche während der Bauarbeiten mit Hilfe von Wahrscheinlichkeitsanalysen der Verformung unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Streuung der Verformbarkeit der Dammfundamente untersucht. An Hand dieser analystischen Ergebnisse wurde das Design der Dammfundamente dann enthusiastisch mittels deterministischer Methoden hinsichtlich der Streuung der Verformbarkeit diskutiert. Comme les barrages en remblai sont souvent construits sur des fondations rocheuses tendres au Japon, il est essentiel de prévoir précisément les déformations des fondations causées par la mise en place du remblayage durant la phase de conception. Afin d’évaluer avec exactitude le tassement et la déformation de la surface du rocher de fondation durant la construction, l’effet de la dispersion de la déformabilité des fondations sur le comportement de déformation doit être étudié. Dans cette étude, l’auteur a étudié la méthode d’évaluation du tassement et de la déformation de la surface du rocher de fondation durant la construction en procédant à une analyse aléatoire/stochastique de la déformation et en prenant en considération la dispersion de la déformation des fondations du barrage. En se basant sur les résultats de l’analyse, la conception des fondations de barrage avec la méthode déterministe considérant la dispersion de sa déformabilité a été activement discutée.

Ilmenite is the principal feedstock for producing TiO2 - used in paints, plastics and paper and the production of Ti metal. The Brahmaputra River system in Bangladesh represents a potentially new source of ilmenite concentrated within sandbar placer deposits and the current study presents results from beneficiation and characterisation studies conducted on Brahmaputra River Fe-Ti oxides. Characteristic of fluvial systems, the ilmenite concentration is low (~0.5 wt-%), however extensive annual dredging for waterway navigation provides the economic impetus to recover saleable ilmenite. The Fe-Ti oxide suite derived from magnetic fractionation comprises homogeneous ilmenite, titanohematite and hematite, although many grains exhibit complex exsolution within the (Ilm-Hem)ss series. The textural variability results in difficulty generating a pure ilmenite feedstock with the bulk concentrate typically being low in TiO2, containing 31.0 wt-%TiO2 and 62.7 wt-% (Fe2O3). Results are interpreted via an analysis of the implications for producing a commercial-grade ilmenite concentrate suitable for TiO2 production. Mintek conducted test work to study the effect of media wear when using Mintek’s Milling-in-raffinate technology. The grinding media consisted of high-chrome and ceramic balls. The tests were conducted using a laboratory 5L 316 stainless-steel rubber-lined mill. Magotteaux supplied the high-chrome and ceramic balls. The raffinate was synthetically prepared using a typical Cu/Co (2.2 g/L Cu, 3 g/L Co) composition. The milling rate, media wear, mill, leach extraction efficiencies, gangue acid consumption, and residence time were studied. The tests indicated that the high-chrome balls had a higher corrosion rate than the ceramic balls. The ceramic corrosion rate was lower than 0.1 mm/y. The highchrome balls performed better during the leach stages with faster milling time, higher leaching efficiencies for both Cu and Co, lower gangue-acid consumption, and lower residence time

"This work was carried out to determine the influence of rock properties and drilling machine parameters on the penetration rate at the SJ pit of Rössing Uranium Mine, Namibia. Rock properties (uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity) of samples collected were determined in the laboratory. Drilling experiments were conducted in which feed pressure, air pressure, rotary speed, weight on the bit, and torque were varied to measure their effect on the penetration rate. The uniaxial compressive strength varied from 90–180 MPa for layered marble-quartzite and banded gneiss. Increases in feed pressure, weight on the bit, and rotary speed beyond the optimum level led to a decrease in penetration rate and caused the drill bit to ‘stall’. Results of the study revealed that penetration rate increases with an increase in the feed pressure and air pressure. After reaching a maximum value, the penetration rate begins to decrease despite increasing feed pressure. A very high torque causes the drill bit to stall, since the feed pressure is too high and the air pressure is not sufficient to remove the cuttings from blast-hole at maxium bailing velocities. The average penetration rate varied from 19 to 45 m/h for phase 2 of the pit, and from 17 to 68 m/h for phase 3. The optimum drilling machine parameters obtained in phase 2 and phase 3 were slightly lower than those currently being used at the mine. The trials of the optimum machine parameters will assist in reducing the cost of drilling, which varied from N$29.48 to N$36.31 per metre for the tricone bit. The drillability of rocks depends not only on the rock properties, but also on the drilling tools and operational variables. In rotary drilling, rotational speed, thrust, and flushing are the operational variables, and are known as the controllable parameters. Rock properties and geological conditions are the uncontrollable parameters. Although, many attempts have been made to correlate drillability with rock properties, the rock characteristics affecting rotary drilling have not been entirely defined (Hartman, 1962; Kahraman, Bilgin, and Feridunoglu, 2003). Pneumatic flotation cells are high-intensity flotation machines with rapid kinetics, resulting in short residence times. Examples include the Jameson, PneuFlot and ImhoFlot cells. These cells do not use impeller-like mechanical cells. Rather, the air and pulp are mixed in a continuous stream of high fluid velocity through a downcomer or venturi to disperse the air into fine (approximately 0.5 mm) bubbles and maintain particle suspension. Froth wash water is often used to enhance concentrate grade, minimising recovery by entrainment. With the growing application of these types of cells, not only in cleaner stages (their traditional use) but also in pre-flotation and scalping duties, there is a need to predict their performance more accurately for circuit design and optimisation. No widely accepted model for pneumatic flotation cells is available and their metallurgical performance is often scaled up from laboratory and/or pilot plant testing by assuming fixed values for metal recovery, concentrate grade and concentrate percent solids. Toll and custom treatment of base metal concentrates have been performed for decades as mines and concentrators are developed distant from capital and, energy-intensive smelting and refining facilities. Commercial treatment terms have been developed and refined for over a century, and are negotiated taking into account a complex array of quality and economic factors. Treatment of third-party concentrates in the South African platinum industry is a comparatively recent development, brought about by the opening up of mineral rights and operations being developed that are smaller than the critical size required to sustain capitalization of smelting or refining plant. Published commercial terms have not been demonstrated to reflect the complexities and subtleties of base metal concentrate markets. This paper outlines some key elements and parameter ranges of base metal concentrate treatment contracts, and applies similar principles to typical Merensky and UG2 platinum group element (PGE) concentrates to determine potential value distribution between the mining and treatment parties in tolling arrangements.

Rather quietly, a new generation of European norms dealing with earthworks has been developed over the past few years, in particular a part of EN 16907 pertaining to extractive waste. Whereas the majority of the parts deal with routine geotechnical aspects, one part deals specifically with tailings dams. The standard is currently in draft form but if this becomes a European Standard, members of the European Union are bound to comply with the regulations. As such, the standard has the capacity to influence mining in Europe and potentially in South Africa. In this paper we review the standard and compare it to the South African standard on mine residues and the recently published Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM). We conclude found that although the European norm makes great strides towards increasing tailings dam safety, there is room for improvement. The current South African standard has served well since its inception, but can be improved by using concepts from the European and global tailings standards.

In the field of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalysts, cobalt, platinum, and aluminium are the primary metal constituents of the conventionally used cobalt catalyst. While platinum recovery remains a focal point in this field, a recent endeavour by a South African company emerged, which aimed to recover cobalt and aluminium from spent Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalysts for potential use in the agricultural sector. This study aimed to optimally separate cobalt and aluminium from spent Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalyst for this purpose. It further leverages the OLI database to predict metal speciation during solvent extraction to aid with experimental planning. Shake-out tests were conducted to determine optimal separation. conditions, which were validated using three distinct methods: (i) evaluating the experimental error, (ii) comparing results with similar research, and (iii) validating results against the OLI database. The investigation revealed the pivotal role of the aqueous pH yielding effective separation at pH 3.13 ([H2SO4] = 2.5 × 10−4 M) when using 20 vol.% CYANEX 272 and 50 mol.% pre-neutralisation. Effective cobalt scrubbing was achieved with 50 g/L Al at pH 2.8, while successful stripping required 1 M H2SO4. Competitive interactions between complexing aluminium and cobalt species were observed when contacting with CYANEX 272 at a pH < 4. Equipment design analysis for a targeted separation efficiency of 87% dictated the necessity of two mixer stages and a settler measuring 1.5 m × 1.5 m × 6.0 m (height × width × length). This settler would ensure sufficient residence time for gravity separation at a flow rate of 10 m3/h.

South Africa has the world?s largest in situ deposits of platinum group metals, but economically exploitable resources are shrinking due to escalating costs and technical challenges. The South African National Research and Development Strategy comments that an increase in the knowledge intensity of the resource-based sectors is required to turn these resources to account. Highly trained human resources, continuous improvement, technological innovation, and smart acquisition of know-how will become the major differentiators in the global mining market. Mechanization and, ultimately, automation in mining have the potential to reverse the negative mining trend and resolve safety and other challenges. However, the adoption rate of mechanized mining in platinum (and hard-rock gold) has been slow for various reasons. Changing systems from conventional drill?and-blast to continuous mechanized mining is a big step-change endeavour. The problem of transformation is discussed, and the discipline of systems engineering is examined because of its successful application in aerospace and defence.
