The risks associated with operating water reservoirs and tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are different because of their different purposes, methods of construction and operation, and characteristics of the materials impounded and their flow behaviour. Regardless of the differences, these two types of structures are often put in the same category when it comes to risk assessment and the application of relevant methodologies, which may result in unrealistic outcomes. In this paper we investigate whether it is possible to apply the risk ranking methodology designed for water reservoirs to TDFs and overview the key differences between these two types of structures. We also provide a comparative analysis of the results obtained by conducting a risk assessment of the operation of a TSF, applying the method recommended by the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), and analyse the results using the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) technique. It is concluded that a more realistic evaluation of risk levels can be obtained by adopting a systematic approach to risk assessment in accordance with the traditional risk definition on which the FMEA technique is based.

VERSLAG- REPORT No. 1365 STUDIES OF INCIPIENT FUSION IN THE SYSTEM CHROMITE- MgO- Al2O3-SiO2-C 5th January, 1972 Investigator: N. A. Barcza SYNOPSIS A fundamental study was made of twelve chromite ores by use of a thermobalance under atmospheric and reducing conditions. It was found that their thermal behaviour under atmospheric conditions can be related to the mineralogical composition of the chromite spinel and the gangue. The overall mechanism of reduction with solid carbon over the temperature range of 1 200 to 1 500°C was shown to be diffusion of carbon through the reaction product. The effects of additions of fluxes and variations in particle size on the kinetics and mechanism of reduction were determined. It was shown that carbon monoxide does not reduce chromite ore up to temperatures of 1 550 °C, and it can therefore be eliminated as the diffusing reducing species. However, the reaction product of reduction, namely a mixed carbide of iron and chromium, was shown to be an effective reducing agent for chromitc ore, while also facilitating the transport of carbon. VERSLAG - REPORT No. 1380 AN ELECTROCHEMICAL MODEL FOR THE LEACHING OF URANIUM DIOXIDE 10th January, 1972 Investigators: C. R. S. Needes, M. J. Nicol SYNOPSIS A correlation between the rate of leaching of UO2 and the electrochemical properties of the oxidant concerned has been derived. This correlation is found to be borne out by experimental results. Certain effects observed in UO2 leaching and hitherto unexplained have been clarified in terms of an electrochemical mechanism. Experiments have shown that the mixed potential of a UO2 electrode gives a measure of the rate of dissolution of UO2. Its significance to commercial practice is discussed. CONCLUSIONS (I) The dissolution of UO2 in the presence of a number of oxidants can be explained in terms of an electrochemical mechanism. (2) The mixed potential of the UO2 electrode is a measure of the rate of UO2 leaching. This principle could be used in the control of industrial leaching operations. (3) A simple treatment has provided a mathematical basis for a fundamental correlation between the rate of U02 dissolution and the chemical properties of the oxidants concerned. This relation has been found to agree well with experimental results. (4) A number of phenomena occurring during the leaching of UO2, hitherto not explained in a satisfactory manner, have now been clarified in terms of an electrochemical mechanism.

To reduce the frequency of mining incidents and improve safety and production efficiency, it is important to develop technology for the autonomous positioning and navigation of mining equipment, without the assistance of satellite navigation signals. In this study we review the current technological environment for positioning and navigation underground and present several integrated navigation strategies. Existing underground positioning and navigation technology is described, and the performances of different methods based on this technology analysed and compared. The combination types and positioning effects of underground positioning and navigation strategies are discussed. Recent research directions for filtering methods and positioning estimation algorithms for underground positioning and navigation are reviewed. Finally, we summarize the future direction of underground positioning and navigation technology and related algorithms.

TALKS The Chairman called first on Mr D. E. Couperthwaite to present his paper on 'Heavy media separation' and then on Mr A. F. Leger to present his paper on 'Engineering plastics'. Both presentations, which were illustrated with diagrams, proved of great interest to all members. A vote of thanks to both speakers was proposed by Mr T. Zadkin. CLOSURE After thanking the speakers, the Chairman thanked all present for their attendance and declared the Meeting closed at about 9.30 p.m. Refreshments were then served.

Modelling stockpiles is a key factor of a project’s economics and operation in mining, because not all the mined ores are not able to mill for many reasons. Furthermore, the financial value of the ore in the stockpile needs to be reflected on the balance sheet. Therefore, automatically tracking the boundaries of the stockpile facilitates the mine scheduling engineers to calculate the tonnage of the ore remaining in the stockpile. This paper suggests how the dynamic of stockpile shape changes caused by dumping and reclaiming operations can be inferred using polygon models. The paper also demonstrates how the geometry of stockpiles can be inferred in the absence of reclaimed bucket information, in which case the reclaim polygons are established using the digger’s global positioning system (GPS) positional data at the time of truck loading. This work further compares two polygon models for creating 2D shapes.

Flotation concentrate originating from the Asarel-Medet porphyry copper mining and processing complex in Bulgaria has been subjected to regrinding using a Ro-Star mill; the effects of which on the downstream metallurgical behaviour are discussed. Particularly the effect on the liberation degree was studied through an optical microscopy and MLA-SEM automated mineralogy. On the other hand, copper selective flotation of the reground bulk concentrate was realised to evaluate the anticipated metallurgical improvement. Process parameters such as involvement of prior hydrocycloning and variation of collector dosage have been evaluated. Within a two-minute residence time inside the Ro-Star mill, an improved liberation degree of the copper bearing minerals has been observed. As a consequence, enhanced copper recovery and selectivity against pyrite was noted. It has been found that in order to guarantee efficient flotation of the resulting ultrafine particles, a modified flotation regime (i.e. changing collector suite and dosages) should be followed. The purpose of this project was to compare two underground, batch coal haulers ? battery haulers and shuttle cars ? in order to determine the more viable machine to implement. The specific standards for battery haulers were investigated and compared to the requirements of shuttle cars in order to identify the unnecessary expenses related to the legal requirements that are attached to the machines. Costs such as running costs, capital costs, and maintenance costs were researched and compared over a typical life of machine. Average production rates and breakdown times were obtained and used to determine which machine would be more reliable in achieving the required annual production.

INTRODUCTION The first references in the literature to the so-called C.S.I.R. 'doorstopper' strain cell were made in 1964 1,2,3,4. These were the climax of nearly two years of experimental and developmental work with the instruments and the operating techniques involved. Since that time numerous field measurements have been made with 'doorstoppers' and they have been developed to a stage where they are in commercial production and are being supplied to users throughout the world. No detailed description of the latest 'doorstopper' equipment has, however, appeared in print and this paper is written to bring the literature up to date in this respect. The triaxial strain cell was developed three years ago 5, 6, 7 and was first described at the First Congress of the International Society for Rock Mechanics in Lisbon in 1966 8. Since that date laboratory tests and-particularly important-field tests 7' 9 have demonstrated the validity and practicality of the instruments and techniques. These instruments have also been developed to a stage where they have been released for commercial production. In this form they are very different from those described two years ago and a full description of them at this stage seems to be justified. THE INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY 'DOORSTOPPER' AND TRIAXIAL STRAIN CELLS Both the 'doorstopper' and triaxial strain cells were designed specifically to determine the absolute stress in rock using an overcoring stress relieving technique. They were not designed to measure changes in stress. They may, however, be used for the latter purpose provided the glue which is used to stick the strain gauges to the rock is known to possess sufficiently stable strain-time characteristics as not to affect the accuracy of the results during the time the measurements are made. The 'doorstopper' was designed primarily to measure the major principal stress in situations where its direction and those of the two other principal stresses were either known or could be assumed. For example, at great depth in undisturbed virgin ground, it is reasonable to assume that the maximum principal stress is vertical and that the other two lie in a horizontal plane. The borehole in which the 'doorstopper' is installed would thus be drilled in the horizontal plane parallel to one of the minor principal stresses, the direction of which would either have to be assumed or determined as described later. The stresses measured would be the vertical major principal stress and the principal stress acting in a horizontal plane normal to the borehole axis. It is possible, as will be shown later, to obtained the complete state of stress using 'doorstoppers'. In this event, it is necessary to make measurements in three boreholes drilled in any three known directions to each other and relative to a system of three orthogonal axes. The triaxial strain cell was designed to determine the complete state of stress in a single borehole drilled in any direction in any stress field. Drill-hole spacing analysis (DHSA) and optimization are becoming commonplace for uncertainty assessment and management in the mining industry. However, there is no standardized DHSA workflow, and the outputs of certain methodologies are not interchangeable. We group available simulation-based DHSA methods according to their accounted uncertainty into (i) raw uncertainty, assessed by drawing realizations from synthetic data-sets with the drilling spacings to be tested; and (ii) model uncertainty, in which these synthetic data-sets are used to assess the variation between the estimated model and the (unknown) actual value. DHSA workflows available in the literature ignore the differences between both types of uncertainty. Commonly, the DHSA algorithm is chosen without a detailed analysis of its uncertainty output, which may lead to misleading results and suboptimal decisions. While available solutions are based only on assessing raw or model uncertainty, the proposed approach simultaneously analyses both and their relationship for models at different stages of the mine. The integrated analysis results deliver more information to support decision-making than available methods. Principles, practical considerations, and discussions of the advantages of the proposed integrated analysis are presented. The approach is applied to a real gold deposit to illustrate its use.

"SynopsisAlthough women all over the world have been involved in mining activities for centuries, mining has always been considered a very masculine industry due to its heavily male-dominated workforce as well as the physicality of mining work. The mining industry has not been an obvious career choice and preferred place of employment for women; women were mainly employed in administrative and advisory positions. Until 1994, women were legislatively prohibited from being employed in underground operations in South Africa, but the Mines Health and Safety Act, No. 29 of 1996, removed these restrictions. In addition, new mining legislation (the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, No. 28 of 2002) and the accompanying Mining Charter make specific provisions for the inclusion of women in core mining activities and require 10% of core positions to be filled by women.This article voices perceptions of the physical ability of women employed in core mining positions. Findings are drawn from empirical work undertaken at platinum, phosphate, and copper mines. Quantitative and qualitative research paradigms are used. It is evident that women find it extremely difficult to perform mine work that requires physical strength and stamina. Practical recommendations, informed by the literature review and empirical findings, are made with the objective of contributing to the sustainable deployment of women in the mining industry.IntroductionFor many years, mining has been considered the foundation of the South African economy. Although the mining industry in South Africa is currently under considerable pressure and experiences various challenges, including escalating operational costs, electricity tariff increases, safety-related issues and associated production stoppages, poor productivity, labour unrest, and reduced demand both globally and domestically, it remains a key contributor to the national economy and development of the country (IDC, 2013, p. 9).Until 1994, women were legislatively prohibited from meaningful participation in the mining industry and were denied access to skills and jobs, self-employment, and entrepreneurship. The newly elected democratic government in 1994 initiated substantial socio-political and economic transformation in South Africa. Nearly every sector in the country was transformed and re-shaped, primarily through sector-specific legislation, but also through negotiations between government, industry, and labour unions to create and refine the so-called sector charters, which included the Mining Charter. The vision of the new regime, the African National Congress (ANC), was to ‘transfer power to the people and transform society into a non-racial, non-sexist, united, democratic one, and change the manner in which wealth is shared, in order to benefit all the people’ (ANC, 2007)."

The real cost of any mining incident has, empirically, proven to be estimation-driven, rather than factdriven. One of the main reasons for this lies with the complexity of the cost composition of any given mining incident. Incident costs comprise both direct and indirect cost factors, and in many cases the costs associated with these factors are incurred during different time periods following the incident. In this paper we aim to identify the various cost factors arising from mining incidents, provide a thorough understanding of all the potential cost factors identified, and draw general conclusions on the knowledge obtained. Furthermore, recommendations are made on how mining companies could use the results, in order to assist them in calculating the costs of mining incidents. The paper also provides suggestions for further research, with the emphasis on the most significant immeasurable cost factors, namely the costs of implementing job accommodations following an incident, the harm to company reputation, and the decreased productivity due to low worker morale/psychological factors following an incident. If mining companies are aware of and understand which factors could contribute to the cost of any given incident, future planning and incident cost estimations could be easier. It should, however, be noted that although this study provides a comprehensive list of cost factors (and detailed explanations), other unknown cost factors relating to mine incidents could prevail in extreme cases.

Mixtures of MnO and graphite were reacted under argon at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1425°C, and the loss in mass of the mixture was recorded continuously. The results showed that the rate of reduction of MnO increased as the temperature increased and the ratio of MnO to C decreased. The effect of the particle size of MnO and of graphite on the rate of reduction at I350°C was very small in the range 63 to 250 µm for MnO and 45 to 355 µm for graphite. The rate of reduction at I350°C was increased markedly by the addition of Na2CO2 and K2CO3, was slightly increased by the addition of Fe2O3, was unaffected by the addition of CaO, MgO, and AI2O., and was decreased by the addition of SiO2. Some CO2 was always present in the effluent gas, and this was taken as evidence that the reduction of MnO occurred by way of CO2 as an intermediate product. The activation energy of the ratecontrolling step was 57,5 kcal, and this was similar to the measured activation energy for the gasification of graphite by CO., namely, 61,S kcal per mole of graphite. A simple kinetic model was derived on the assumption that the gasification of graphite was the ratecontrolling step, and the results over the temperature range 1200 to I425°C, when plotted in the appropriate form, yielded straight lines as predicted by the model.

Deep level hardrock mining faces increasing challenges from elevated in situ stresses and associated rockbursts. This study aims to develop a systematic framework for evaluating destress blasting effectiveness, with a focus on deep Swedish hardrock mines. The methodology integrates a critical review and adaptation of global best practices: advanced numerical modelling (static and dynamic simulations), field-based rock fracture monitoring using ground penetrating radar and borehole imaging, and application of rockburst prediction criteria including the strain energy storage coefficient (F), brittle shear ratio, and burst potential index. Geostatistical simulations, machine learning models, and industrial internet of things-based, real-time monitoring are proposed to enhance predictive accuracy, model calibration, and operational adaptability. Key findings show that effective destress blasting evaluation requires multi-modal integration of numerical outputs, field observations, microseismic trends, and uncertainty quantification, accounting for site-specific geological variability and dynamic stress redistribution. The study advances the field by proposing a predictive, feedback-driven evaluation framework tailored for deep Swedish mining conditions, capable of improving proactive rockburst risk management. It offers both practical tools for mining practitioners to optimise stress management, reduce seismic hazards, and enhance excavation safety, and academic foundations for future refinement of destress blasting models, geotechnical monitoring strategies, and adaptive design protocols. This research contributes to safer, more efficient deep mining operations by bridging gaps between theoretical modelling, empirical monitoring, and real-time, data-driven blast design optimisation strategies.

The South African mining industry continues to be a major source of employment at a time when at least 25 per cent of the working age population is unemployed. At the same time the industry faces a skills shortage in many of the disciplines necessary for its future health. The University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, and University of South Africa have historically produced mining graduates for the South African industry, with any shortfall being met by the recruitment of overseas graduates. More recently the global shortage of engineers and other mining industry professionals has seen a reversal of this trend and a very significant emigration of well-educated and highly skilled personnel. The traditional career path for mining graduates is in production and mine management. However, there is the parallel and possibly more pressing need for specialized skills in such fields as ventilation, rock engineering, mine planning, mineral resource evaluation, and mineral asset valuation. It is in these essential areas that chronic shortages continue to hamper the development of the industry and may well frustrate its ambitions to be safe, healthy, and profitable into the future. The permeability of skills across sectorial boundaries within the mining industry requires that skills shortages in the platinum sector are not looked at in isolation, but within the context of the entire industry. This paper reviews the efforts being made by the universities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels to meet the needs of the South African mining industry, in terms of the required numbers and the range of specialized skills.

By the end of 2022, the south-eastern Copper Belt region of the Democratic Republic of Congo was host to more than 40 small, medium, and relatively large sized copper solvent extraction sites. To date, solvent extraction reagents supplied in this region have never exceeded 50% of ketoxime content. We generated laboratory extraction and strip isotherms and used these with the BASF IsocalcTM modelling software to assess the benefit of using higher ketoxime blends on the main metallurgical performance indicators such as copper recovery and net transfer. Pure ketoxime extractants combine a relatively low strip point and a decent loading capacity, which are most effective as the pH of the pregnant leach solution gets closer to 2.

The effects of utilizing recycled tailings pond water from the flotation plant at the Mining Company of Guemassa (MCG) on galena recovery and selectivity towards chalcopyrite (RPb-Cu) , sphalerite (RPb- Zn), and pyrrhotite (RPb-Fe) were studied at bench scale. The results showed that recycling the tailings pond water in the lead circuit without addition of fresh water gave a good flotation performance in terms of lead recovery (Rpb) (75%) and selectivity towards the other metals: RPb-Cu (54%), RPb-Zn (60%) and RPb-Fe(65%). This allows the water to be recycled at least four times. However, increasing the d80 from 100 μm to 160 μm currently used at the MCG plant had a negative effect on the lead flotation performance.

"The localized uniform conditioning (LUC) technique was proposed by Marat Abzalov in 2006. The technique converts conventional uniform conditioning (UC) grade-tonnage curves into single grade values attached to each smallest mining unit (SMU). This is achieved by ranking the SMUs within a panel in increasing order of their grade (based on the direct kriging of SMUs). This ranking is then used to localize the conventional UC grade-tonnage curves for each panel by dividing them into classes and computing their mean grades, which are assigned to the SMUs. The quality of this localization process will depend heavily on the validity of the grade patterns predicted by the direct kriging of the SMUs. Abzalov noted that where the distribution of data available for the direct kriging of the SMU is characterized by strong short-range variability, the advantages of using the LUC approach may be more limited. Consequently, a study was undertaken to determine how valid the predicted grade patterns of a typical Birimian-style gold deposit (with high nugget effect and strong short-range variability) might be expected to be. This was determined by comparing the direct SMU kriging ranking (based on sparse data) with the grade control model ranking (based on close-spaced data and the best available estimate of the deposit). The results showed a satisfactory correlation between these rankings and it was concluded that, although the grade patterns predicted by the direct kriging of the SMUs may be less meaningful for deposits exhibiting strong short-range continuity, there is nevertheless a convincing relationship with the actual (or best available) rankings. Therefore, the LUC technique is still considered to be useful for this style of deposit. Mrazovka tunnel was excavated under one building whose subsurface space was not possible to reinforce against additional settlements induced by digging. In the presented contribution the risk analysis, warning levels and results of deformation measurements are described. Le matériel présenté décrit l‘analyse des risques, le niveau des limites et les résultats des mesures des déformations. Der Untergrund eines der Gebäude, unter dem der Tunnel "Mrazovka" ausgeschachtet wurde, war es nicht möglich, gegen nachträgliches Setzen zu versteifen, hervorgerufen durch die Untertunnelung. Im vorliegenden Beitrag sind Gefahrenanalyse, Grenzwerte und Ergebnisse von Deformationsmessungen beschrieben.

Slags of the system CaO-MgO-AI2O3-TiO2-SiO2at had been reduced in graphite crucibles for selected time Intervals were fully re-oxidized so that an assessment could be made of the rate and extent to which the titanium oxide had been reduced. The derived kinetic parameters were studied as functions of slag composition and temperature. The extent of reduction after selected Intervals of treatment could be correlated with the physical behaviour of the melt (in terms of viscosity and electrical resistivity).
