The estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1992 was $1,633.3 billion in terms of current (1992) dollars, or $1,178.0 billion in terms of constant 1983 dollars. This latter figure was 4.8% above the 1992 level but was 2.4% below the record-high level of $1,207.1 billion 1983 dollars set in 1980. Table 1 provides the latest available revised time series of the estimated value of world crude mineral production both in terms of 1983 constant dollars and in terms of current dollars. The statistical base for this estimation is derived from the data on the value of production of a group of key commodities that was published in the authoritative French language mineral industry periodical, Annales des Mines, for selected years up to 1983. The aforementioned values and those presented in the table are for crude minerals only and only begin to suggest the impact that the mineral industry has on the world economy. These figures represent only the value of mineral materials as they are mined or otherwise extracted from the Earth. They do not reflect the value added to these materials through downstream processing within the facilities commonly accepted as mineral industry plants. That is, value added through beneficiation of ores, smelting, refining, and similar processing is not included in these figures. Comprehensive world data on the value added by such processing are not available; however, a conservative estimate of the total value of processed output from mineral industry plants derived wholly from primary (newly mined) materials would be on the order of about $2,800 billion constant 1983 dollars or $3,900 billion in terms of 1992 dollars.

Coal is a combustible, carbonaceous, sedimentary rock that is formed by the accumulation, compaction, and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation [Simon and Hopkins 1981; Bates and Jackson 1987]. Coal is classified according to its type, grade, and rank. The type of coal relates to the plant materials from which the coal originated. The grade of coal refers to the purity of the coal-or the amount of inorganic material (including ash and sulfur) left after the coal is burned [Bates and Jackson 1987; Stefanko 1983]. The rank of coal indicates its degree of metamorphosis and roughly correlates to the geological age of the coal or the geological environment from which it has been mined [Bates and Jackson 1987]. Rank also indicates the percentage of carbon in dry, mineral-free coal [Whitten and Brooks 1973] and the degree to which the coalification process has progressed [Larsen 1981]. The geological process of coalification begins with organic materials (e.g., celluloses, lignins, and other plant compounds that are deoxygenated and then dehydrogenated) and ends with coal of various geological ages, from lignite to anthracite [Larsen 1981]. Table 3- 1 presents the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) classification of coals by rank. According to Parkes [1982], high-rank coal includes anthracite and semianthracite coal ("hard coal," with 91% to 95% carbon); intermediate-rank coal includes low-, medium-, and high-volatile bituminous and sub-bituminous coal ("soft coal," with 76% to 90% carbon); and low-rank coal includes lignite (with 65% to 75% carbon or less). The rank of coal tends to increase from the western to the eastern United States, with anthracite occurring primarily in eastern Pennsylvania [Schlick and Fannick 1971]. Most of the coal currently mined in the United States is bituminous [Given 1984]. A classification of the coal in the United States is provided in Table 3-2.

"There is considerable evidence that all mine dusts do not present the same health hazard. Rank of coal and composition, especially silica content of the mine dust, shape, and surface charge are risk factors that affect the incidence and severity of CWP. Current efforts of Center researchers involve characterization of:•,size/shape/composition•,surface and functional groups•,particle interactions.Work is underway to prepare and characterize respirable coal dust samples, and to develop and evaluate techniques and procedures for the characterization of respirable dust. A suite of standard samples including anthracite, medium volatile and high volatile bituminous coals, quartz, clay, and rock dust have been prepared and thoroughly characterized with respect to the distributions of particle size and compositions. A comparison of the morphology of the standard dust particles with similar particles collected in an underground coal mine is given in Figure 43. Samples of these characterized (Standard) dusts have been distributed among various research groups associated with the Center.The aerodynamic diameter of a particle is a particularly important characteristic since this parameter determines the point of deposition in the human respiratory tract. A 3-dimensional numerical model for theoretically determining the equivalent aerodynamic diameter of irregular shaped particles has been developed and used to analyze coal dust particles and a particle shadowing technique has been developed for .experimental 3-dimensional shape analysis (Figure 44). In the theoretical technique, the equivalent aerodynamic diameter of the particle is numerically determined from computation of the fluid drag on the particle. This allows the aerodynamic diameter of any regular or irregular shaped particle to be determined as a function of the particle's orientation or as an average over all particle orientations. The technique is quite accurate in that the aerodynamic diameter of several coal dust particles have been numerically determined to be within 5% of experimentally measured values."

"A copper-palladium-gold-silver ore is being mined at Salt Chuck, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, from which a concentrate is produced that contains 40 to 50 per cent copper, and considerable amounts of palladium, gold and silver. There has been much difficulty in obtaining assays for palladium, gold and silver from the mine, smelter, sampler, and umpire that check within reasonable limits. While the results for copper content have not been unusual, the results for palladium have varied as much as 0c8 oz. on 3 oz. material, results for gold differed by 0.1 oz. on 1.6 oz. materials, and for a silver content of 7 oz., results differed by as much as 4.0 oz.The Bureau of Mines was requested to determine the causes of variation in the results of the different assayers, and to develop a satisfactory procedure for analyzing such ore.Three samples of concentrate were received for analysis, two small lots that had previously been assayed by the various laboratories, and one large sample. The large sample was dried and ground in a ball mill, put through a 150-mesh screen, and then returned to the ball mill for thorough mixing. The small samples were ground to pass a 150-mesh screen and then mixed on a mixing wheel.The large sample (No. 1) was analyzed by five different procedures, one of the small samples (No.2) by three procedures, and the other (No. 3) by two procedures (the two small samples being too small for further tests). The different procedures tried and the results obtained arc presented below. The samples of concentrate were from ore mimed and milled by the Alaska palladium Co. at Salt Chuck."

The Bureau of Mines has developed a rapid analytical method for the determination of anions by ion chromatography (IC) in phosphate rock mining materials and cement kiln dust (CKD). The procedure employs an Na2C03 fusion of the sample, followed by a water extraction that allows direct injection of the sample into an ion chromatograph without separator column poisoning by the transition metal ions. Fluoride (F-) and phosphate (P043-) were determined in 24 phosphate rock processing and waste material samples by the IC method. The results were compared with a pyrohydrolytic distillation-titration method for F-and a colorimetric procedure for P043-. Excellent analytical agreement was obtained for F-and p043-values determined by IC and the comparable wet chemical methods. Fluoride values ranged from 0.3 wt-pct in the filter cake to 3.6 wt-pct in phosphate rock concentrate. Phosphate values ranged from 1.2 wt-pct in the filter cake to 33.8 wt-pct in the rock concentrate. Fluoride, chloride, phosphate, nitrate, and sulfate in several CKD samples were determined by the IC method and standard wet chemical techniques. Excellent agreement was obtained between the two methods for all anions. A total of 113 CKD samples from all areas of the United States was analyzed by the IC method. Fluoride values ranged from <0.01 to 0.36 wt-pct. Chloride values ranged from <0.01 to 12.5 wt-pct. Sulfate values ranged from 0.41 to 31.6 wt-pct. Phosphate and nitrate were detected in only about 25 pct of the samples at >0.02 wt-pct. Maximum phosphate and nitrate values were 1.0 and 1.6 wt-pct, respectively.

"A 1986 report by the U.S. National Committee on Blomechanlcs (1) describes lung disease as a major national health problem. The report cites three areas that would benefit from a better understanding of the vibratory patterns of the lung. These areas are outlined below.1. In cases of respiratory distress, pressure driven artificial respirators are used. A new technique using high frequency respiration is quite promising, but the pressure distribution in the lung as a function of frequency is not yet known. At these frequencies of 1 to 60 Hz, the lung expands asynchronously (2) and a better understanding of these expansion nonunlformltles could provide valuable Information about the mechanics of high frequency ventilation.2. Listening to the sounds In the lung can yield valuable Information about the state of the lung. To improve the technique, a better understanding of how acoustic waves propagate through the lung is needed.3. The response of the lung as It Is subjected to acoustic excitation, dynamic loading or shock waves is not well understood. A better knowledge of these responees can lead to improved treatment for patients subjected to either explosive pressure waves or car crashes.4. Researchers are measuring the acoustic Impedance of the Iung to detect early states of dysfunction. Sneckenberger and Whitmoyer (3) have reported Impedances obtained at acoustic frequencies up to about 6000 Hz. However, It la not certain which parts of the lung are responding to the acoustic excitation.To Investigate the vibratory characteristics of the lung, excised rat lungs were excited via the trachea with acoustic waves at frequencies up to 6000 Hz. Thie paper describes an Instrumentation system, utlllzlng time-averaged holographic Interferometry, to detect and quantify the response of the lung surface to the acoustic excitation."

The Geophysical section of the United States Bureau of Mines has received many inquiries regarding the application of geophysical methods to the location of small, buried metallic objects. The object of this paper is fourfold: (1) To sketch as briefly and non- technically as possible the principles underlying the operation of several elec- trical geophysical methods of prospecting applicable to the finding of small, buried metallic objects; (2) to point out the possibilities and limitations of these methods; (3) to present, whenever possible, data showing actual results obtained from their use; and (4) to enumerate and describe methods that lack scientific background or foundation.

Hydraulic backfill consisting of siliceous mill tailings was successfully dewatered and consolidated by electrokinetics in a field test conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the Star mine, Burke, Idaho. A stope at the 2,000-foot level was filled in such a way that slimes and coarse sand were retained in the scope. Following settlement of solids and decant of surface water, direct current applied between buried electrodes created a firm, dense material in approximately 3 hours. This rapid densification of fine-grained material demonstrated the utility of this method and suggests other applications, particularly in the control of slime deposits that cause serious problems in many deep mines.

UPTREND in value of mineral production in the Commonwealth of Australia continued in 1963, again pacing the country&apos;s general economic growth rate. Increases occurred in output of most raw and processed mineral products, including bauxite, copper, iron ore, pig iron, steel, lead, zinc, cement, gypsum, pyrite, coal, and refined petroleum products. Although the economy of Australia has been traditionally based on wool and agricultural products, in recent years the country has become highly industrialized. Nearly one-third of the 3.6 million total civilian labor force is engaged in manufacturing. Employment in mines and quarries occupies 1.4 percent of the national labor force.

This paper describing the milling practice at the Coniaurum Mine is one of a series of papers on milling methods, practice, and costs prepared in cooperation with an published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The 500-ton will of the Coniaurum Mines (Ltd.) is located at approximately the center of the company&apos;s property and a little more than a mile from the town of Schumacher, Ontario. The main shaft through which all the ore is heisted is adjacent to the mill so that the ore hoisted in a 3-ton skip is dumped directly into a 15-ton bin at the crusher.

The Bureau of Mines developed data on the methane content of the Hartshorne coalbed, Haskell and Le Flore Counties, Okla. The methane content is calculated to be between 1.1 and 1.5 trillion cubic feet, based on an estimate of total coal in place of 2.4 to 3.2 billion short tons. Methane increases with depth, but the rate of increase decreases with greater depths. Degasification in advance of mining is recommended for all mines operating at depths greater than 500 feet to reduce hazards and methane explosions, decrease mine ventilation costs, and conserve the natural gas that would be otherwise wasted.

The possibility of improving the volatilization of gold through the formation of a metal-gold chloride vapor complex was investigated. Gold-silica mixtures, containing ferrous and nonferrous minerals and salts as additives, were treated in a laboratory tube furnace with a flow of chlorine gas at various temperatures. The addition of pyrite (FeS2) to a charge of gold-silica increased the volatility of the gold from 3, 20, and 62 percent of the total gold to 62, 93, and 100 percent at 200°, 300°, and 400° C, respectively. Chemical analyses of the condensate indicated the volatile species to be FeAuCl6.

This Bureau of Mines report describes in detail the design and operation of a test apparatus for measuring the sound power levels of drills used by the mining industry. The two major components of the test apparatus are a computer-controlled automated drill test fixture (ADTF) and a large (45,000-ft3) reverberation chamber that houses the ADTF. Design specifications and performance capabilities of the ADTF and the reverberation room are given. Initial test results for three types of drills--a pneumatic percussion drill, a hydraulic percussion drill, and a pneumatic rotary drill--are given to illustrate the types of experiments that can be conducted with the test appartus.

A series of alloys was laboratory prepared by adding up to 4 weight-percent cobalt to the basic composition of type AM 350 (AISI 633) stainless steel. Aging curves were established for each alloy at 750° F, 850° F, and 950° F for lengths of time up to 100 hours. A series of annealed steels containing as much as 1 weight-percent cobalt was cold-rolled 50 percent and aged for 3 hours at 850° F. No improvement in hardness due to cobalt was observed in the steels transformed by heat treatment. Slight improvements in hardness were observed in the steels transformed by cold working.

To improve the efficiency and speed of under-ground post-disaster rescue operations. The Approach: Develop a battery-powered mine-rescue vehicle designed to carry rescue crews, rescued miners, and their support equipment. How It Works: The experimental vehicle, shown below, was designed and constructed by the Mine Safety Appliances Company under contract to the Bureau of Mines. ATV Manufacturing Company and Delco Electronics were subcontractors. A rechargeable, silver-zinc battery provides power to a 3-horsepower permissible motor, the speed of which is regulated by a solid-state controller. Three wheels on each side are independently driven by a chain and mechanical trans-mission.

It was decided to demonstrate the use of latex as a soil sealant by irrigating three small plots at Lanse coded 03A on the west of Brown&apos;s run, 3C on the east of the stream, and SB, an area on the spoil bank. Earlier plans to sprinkle latex on twenty acres of the side were abandoned because of easement difficulties. On the basis of results from laboratory soil columns and small plot experiments at Lanse, Naugatex J-3471 was the latex of choice. The irrigation system consisted of plastic pipe (two inch size) for the main line from the water meter to the irrigation area because of lower price and ease of handling. Because the municipal water supply was limited to 20 gpm, low-volume 14V-LA-TNT Rainbow sprinklers were specified with low angle 20° 3/32 inch nozzles to reduce wind effects. At the expected nozzle pressure of 50 psig, each sprinkler covers a 56 foot diameter area at a delivery rate of 1.64 gpm. Each of the three test areas was covered with twelve sprinklers, six used with water alone as a control area and six used with latex and subsequent water spraying. One-quarterturn inlet valves were positioned on the main lines leading to each area. Flow to the treated and untreated areas was set at 10 gpm by Dole flow control valves in the&apos; main entry lateral to each of the six sprinklers. To avoid the use of dilution tanks, a Moyno pump operated by a 1/2 HP, 1140 rpm 5:1 reducing drive was used to deliver 1/2 gpm 48% latex for mixing with 10 gpm water. A 3500 watt gasoline generator provided power for pump and light. Latex was applied at night to take advantage of the lower evaporation and higher humidity. Neutron gauge access tubes were placed in orthogonal arrangement in the areas that were irrigated, with four tubes in the section that were sprinkled with latex and four tubes in the untreated irrigation section in each of the three locations. Each tube, five and one-half feet long and sealed at one end with a plug welded in place, was inserted five feet into the ground in a cored hole. In each irrigation area, the left section of six sprinklers spread the dilute latex while the right section sprinkled the same amount of water to serve as a control plot. As shown in Figure 7 each sprinkler has a 56-foot sprinkling diameter at 50 psig design water pressure. The sprinklers are 30 feet apart on the laterals and 35 feet apart between the laterals. The access tubes (coded AT on Figure 7) were placed in comparable spots on the two sections of each area, so that four soil moisture measurements on the two sections could be compared. Bouyoucos resistance blocks (BB) were also placed in areas 03A and 3C at one, two and three foot depths, but not on the spoil bank area.

"SummaryAs part of an effort.to understand the mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal, which is important in studies of respirable dust due to mining, fracture toughness measurements and the strain energy density (SEO) theory were applied to calculate the crush zone size under a cutting tool in coal. This · zone is the major source of fine fragments in the 1 to 10 µm size range. The model used in these calculations is a boundary element program containing a failure criterion based on the SEO theory. The boundary element program calculates linear elastic stresses at numerous points in the coal material ahead of a cutting bit. These stresses arc then input to a subroutine called critical ftaw length and orientation (CFLO) which uses the SED theory to determine the CFLO for a small crack at the boundary element stress computation point. The extent of crushing is based on earlier postulates about . the role of inherent flaws in a fragmentation process. To form 1 to 10 µm fragments requires firstly a local stress strong enough to activate flaws with a characteristic length less than 1 to 10 µm and secondly, a flaw density sufficient to provide an average spacing between flaws also on the order of 1 to 10 µm. The locus of active lO µm ftaws represents the maximum possible extent of fine fragmentation in the 10 µm or less size range assuming that a sufficient inherent flaw density exists. The approach offers a first order approximation to the extent of crushing under a tool tip. The size and shape of the crush zone volume is affected by the attack angle and geometry of the tool.IntroductionFine fragment generation in the 1 to 10 µm size range under the action of a generic coal cutting tool may be explained on the basis of fracture mechanics which suggests two major sources of fine fragments: first in a crush zone near the tool tip and second by shear fracturing. along major macrocrack surfaces (Zipf and Bieniawski, 1988a). In this paper, fracture toughness measurements and the strain energy density theory are used to calculate the crush zone size. This zone represents the major source of fine fragments in the 1 to 10 µm size range and understanding the mechanical factors controlling its size represents a first step toward using fracture mechanics to characterize the ·tendency of various coals to produce undesirable fine fragments."
