In an earlier series of 15 Reports of Investigations on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace, experimental data were given on the operations of a custom smelter, a smelter treating rich lead products, and a smelter treating highly zinciferous charges. Five "reports" were written on each of the three types of operation, which were later compared in a summary written for the Institute. Developments in each of these types of operation in lead smelting since the last of the above reports was written have continued and have followed modifications necessitated by changes in the nature of the products received for smelting. The sintering-blast furnace-smelting plants have improved their sintering operation .and have made "2-pass" sintering a more standard operation; the richer lead feeds are diluted when marginal precious metal ores are not available to prevent fusion of the sinter cakes and to permit air to contact the sulfides. Means have been devised to make it easier to remove metallic lead from the wind boxes, but no attempts have been observed to use the D & L somewhat as an ore hearth to make more metallic lead. Except in those cases where zinc-rich lead blast-furnace slags were to be retreated in a "slag-fuming furnace," the sintering and the blast-furnace operations were so carried out that a relatively "clean," lead-poor, final slag was discarded.

"INTRODUCTION During its wartime program of exploration for minerals essential to the national economy, the Bureau of Mines was instructed to investigate sources of raw materials used in the manufacture of iron and steel. As a part of this investigation, some work was done on the iron deposits on the Neutral and Aztec claims on Buckhorn Mountain Canogan County, Washington, which was designed chiefly to indicate the nature and behavior of the ore deposits below the surface exposures. Diamond drilling was started in June and completed in July 1945. Preliminary laboratory tests on iron, ore from Buckhorn Mountain were completed during the fall and winter of 1945. This report presents the data obtained from the investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Etchants containing hexavalent chromium and sulfuric acid are used in a variety of surface-finishing operations. When the resultant spent solutions are discarded, substantial quantities of chromium are lost and pollution prob¬lems are created. To minimize the undesirable environmental effects while improving metal and minerals recycling technology, the Bureau of Mines is con¬ducting research on a method for the economic inplant recycling of these waste etchants. Trivalent chromium, produced when the etchant reacts with a substrate, is oxidized in the anode chamber of a diaphragm cell; other metals, dissolved during the etching operation, are transferred to the catholyte. When waste brass etchants are treated in this manner, all of the trivalent chromium is oxidized and more than 40 percent of the copper and zinc is removed. Similar copper removal and chromium oxidation are achieved with waste printed circuit board etchants and rinse waters from plastic etching operations. The electrical energy needed to regenerate 1 kg sodium dichromate is less than 9 kwhr. Regenerated brass etchants evaluated by two companies equaled or exceeded the performance of fresh etchants.

INJURY experience and employment data are presented in this (chapter for metal and nonmetal mines, stone quarries, sand and gravel pits, iron-blast-furnace slag plants, and metallurgical plants (including ore-dressing and nonferrous reduction plants and refineries) in the United States. Employment and injury experience data for all mineral industries are given in volume III. The 1963 figures are preliminary and are subject to revision. METAL MINES Preliminary estimates for the metal-mining industry of a combined fatal and nonfatal injury-frequency rate of 32.34 per million man-hours in 1963 indicate only a slight change from the rate of 32.00 in 1962. Metal operations had 41 fatal and 3,110 nonfatal injuries during 1963.

The applications of optical spectrochemical methods of analysis for determining trace impurities in metals are described, and the need for developing analytical procedures capable of accurately determining fractional parts per million of impurity elements in metals is stressed. Factors which determine sensitivity of detection and means to extend sensitivity levels in spectrochemical methods are discussed. Examples from the current literature illustrate the diversity of spectrochemical techniques that have been applied to the analyses of varied sample types, Many of the methods use preconcentration procedures to increase sensitivity limits. A bibliography containing abstracts of recent methods in included. Optical spectrochemical analysis is based upon the measurement of radiant energy emitted by atoms of the elements to be determined when a sample is subjected to a suitable source of excitation. The behavior of the valence electrons during excitation, usually by an arc, spark, or flame, produces radiant energy of specific wavelengths. This is recorded as spectral line images on a photographic film or plate by the spectrograph; for direct-reading instruments, the spectral lines are detected with photomultiplier tubes. The spectral lines result from the excitation of atoms in the sample. Each variety of atom produces its own characteristic set of lines, thus serving to identify the elements in the sample. Increased concentrations of elements in the excited sample results in increased blackening of the spectral line images.

This information circular is one of a series the Bureau of Mines plans to publish describing the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Temple Mountain mining district is unique among the uranium-producing areas on the plateau. This relatively isolated mining district is in Emery County, Utah, on the eastern flank of the San Rafael Swell, about 35 miles southwest of the town of Green River. The district lies just within the eastern escarpment of the San Rafel Reef - a rampart of rugged and tilted sandstone cliffs that encircles the highly eroded core known as the Sinbad Country. The presence of petroleum matter found associated with the ore deposits, the occurrence of uranium in various formations, and the structural deformation caused by collapsed features have aroused a great deal of geologic interest. Mine development on Calyx Flat is distinctive, in that the ore deposits are worked through 36-inch calyx-drill holes.

This bulletin is issued by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the increase of safety and efficiency in the preparation and utilization of the mineral resources in the United States. Notable among the drains on these resources are the demands made by the nonferrousmetal industries, and in these the losses occasioned in melting brass and bronze are worthy of particular attention. This statement will be better appreciated by a consideration of the size of the brass industry. MAGNITUDE OF THE BRASS INDUSTRY. According to the Thirteenth Census, in 1909 there were in the United States 1,021 fu-ms that dealt mainly in brass and bronze. This total included jobbing foundries, manufacturing plants that both cast and machine a brass or bronze product, and rolling mills, but did not include iron foundries having nonferrous departments nor the numerous large brass-foundry departments of manufacturing plants that produce the castings used in the manufacture of electrical apparatus, cash registers, pumps, and the thousands of machines that require brass castings for their construction. Penton's Foundry List for 1910 gives about 1,150 exclusively nonferrous foundries and about 2,300 iron or steel foundries that also melt brass. If the rolling mills and. jobbing foundries in manufacturing plants be included, and if due credit be given to the rapid growth of the industry in the last few years, largely through the stimulation of the automobile busi¬ness, it is probable that not less than 3,600 plants are to-day melting brass or bronze.

A study was made of the coal resources of an area in Jackson County, Ala., forming a part of the Flat Rock, Henegar, and Stevenson quadrangles. The area studied is a portion of the Plateau coalfield on Sand Mountain and is near the Tennessee Valley Authority's Widows Creek steamplant. Since no detailed geological study of this area had been published, some reconnaissance work was done. The coalbeds and adjacent strata such as sandstones, conglomeratic sandstones, and conglomerates were studied. Available drill logs, together with the areal geology, provided sufficient information to permit correlation of the coalbeds and an estimation of coal reserves. For all categories of reserves, computed on a regional basis, a total of 72,920,000 tons of coal more than 14 inches thick is estimated for the areas studied in Stevenson, Flat Rock, and Henegar quadrangles. Of this tonnage, 40,001,000 tons is estimated to have less than 60 feet of overburden. The total measured coal reserves for the above three quadrangles are 16,359,000 tons, with 12,411,000 tons under less than 60 feet of cover.

Experimental determinations were made of vapor-liquid equilibria data for a helium-nitrogen-methane system. A mixture composition was chosen to approximate the crude helium to be produced Or conservation that will eventually be further refined to obtain pure helium. Although there are publications of studies of the vapor-liquid equilibria of helium-nitrogen, helium-methane, and nitrogen-methane binary systems, there is little indication of work done on the ternary system of helium-nitrogen-methane. The experimental data presented in this report supplement the information available for the binary systems. The equilibrium vapor-liquid data and equilibrium vaporization coefficients are presented in tabular form. Graphs are employed to show an extensive amount of the data.

This report on the bibliography of zirconium has been confined to those publications and patents that appear to be useful in the commercial development of the metal, both the malleable and the nonmalleable. The methods of production have been stressed and special attention has been given to the alloys. Compounds of importance, like the oxide and chloride, for the manufacture of the metal or of the alloys have been considered. The use of the oxide in refractories anal in the glass and porcelain industries has been omitted. The present survey is critical; that is to say, an attempt has been made to evaluate the effectiveness of suggestions made in the literature. The exhaustive work of Marden and Richy, Bureau of Mines Bulletin 186, published in 1921, has been taken as a base to start from with the intention of bringing the subject up to date with material published in the last 24 years. During this time there was considerable 'advance in the preparation of the metal and Its alloys, and in the development of new uses. On the other hand, there was little progress in the methods of decomposing the ores, so that the chapter on this latter phase is necessarily short.

The rate of the steam-carbon reaction, which is of fundamental importance to coal gasification, was determined by passing steam over graphite specimens suspended in an electrically heated tube. The measurements were made at 1,900° to 2,400° F. and at steam-feed rates of 0.1 to 2.0 moles of steam per mole of carbon per minute. At the maximum steam-feed rate, the reaction rate of carbon ranged from 0.4 percent per minute at 1,900° F. to 7 percent per minute at 2,400° F. Up to about 2,200° F., the steam-feed rate had only a slight effect; above this temperature, it limited the reaction velocity when the final mole fraction of steam in the reaction products was much less than 1.

This paper is the third of a series of reports on asbestos prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The reports already issued contain general information, including descriptions of deposits throughout the world.3/ The present paper deals chiefly with milling and marketing. Many grades of asbestos are marketed, and an important phase of milling is the grading of fiber; these subjects therefore are related so intimately that contiguity in their treatment is fully justified. Although the Bureau of Mines is interested primarily in the mining and preparation of raw materials, the fabrication of asbestos products has attained such importance in the United States that brief reference to processes of manufacture is included. CLASSIFICATION OF FIBER Canadian asbestos fibers are divided into three main groups - crudes, mill fibers, and shorts. The term "crude" is applied to fiber of spinning grade measuring three eighths inch or longer, that is. hand-cobbed and not passed through a mill. Mill fibers are obtained by crushing and beating the fiber-bearing" rock, until the, asbestos is freed and, then removing the fiber from the rock by screening or air separation. Shorts are the lowest grades of mill products.

The objectives of this research were to define the chemical composition and physical characteristics of the aerosols associated with attached radon daughters in operating uranium mines, and to investigate the relationship between these aerosol parameters and operating conditions. Major Results and Conclusions The organic, inorganic and radiological characteristics of test chamber and active U-mine aerosols have been measured as a function of particle size. These measurements represent the first detailed analyses of the organic and inorganic components in U-mine aerosols and the first determinations of the details of the individual and total radon daughter distributions in operating U-mines. Total sales of diesel fuel in the United States continue to Increase. This growth is due primarily to two causes: More conversion to diesel units by the rail-roads In recent years, and the greater use of diesel engines in trucks, busses, and tractors. Following are some figures on the distribution of the fuel computed from data issued by the Bureau of Mines.2/ [ ] Deliveries of diesel type fuel from refineries totaled 91,522,000 barrels during the first six months of 1955,3/ corresponding figure for 1954 was 91,170,000 barrels. Information on the properties of this engine fuel is very important to the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers. To supply such information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of diesel fuel oil produced in refineries in this country.

The Bureau of Mines, under Congressional mandate, conducted a mineral survey on the Park Range WSA (Wilderness Study Area) in 1984 and 1985. The WSA, located about midway between Tonopah and Ely, encompasses 47,268 acres. No mineral resources were delineated, nor were workings found, during the investigation. There has been, however, exploration in and near the north end of the study area. ASARCO is actively exploring a block of 41 claims for hot-spring type, low-grade, large-tonnage gold deposits. Their claim block is almost entirely in the study area. The Morey mining district, 7 miles southwest of the study area, produced silver and lesser amounts of gold and lead sporadically from the mid-1860's through the mid-1960's. The WSA is underlain by Tertiary rhyolitic and latitic volcanic rocks and by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The Paleozoic rocks have been faulted, silicified, brecciated, and hydrothermally altered, and have anomalous concentrations of precious metals and pathfinder elements. Additional exploration in the north part of the Park Range WSA may lead to delineation of gold resources.

Oil and gas are minerals and so long as they remain in place they belong to the owner of the land under which they are found and such owner has the right to explore for the oil and gas on or under his land and when found to remove and possess the same. Kimbley v. Luckey, Okla. - 179 Pacific 928, p. 831. OWNERSHIP OF MINERALS LACHES NO BAR. The owner of minerals in land can not be barred by laches for failing to assert his ownership where his title had not been ques- tioned and his right invaded. No lapse of time bars one's right to property and it is only in case his right has been invaded that it can be barred by laches.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed the cycle of secondary gold to determine the quantity of gold not being recovered from scrap, and to identify areas for research to increase the supply of gold from scrap. Secondary gold in 1967 was estimated to be 2.4 million troy ounces; this excludes secondary gold which is recycled within consuming plants. Firms contacted included consumers using about 41 percent of the gold in 1967, And refiners that recovered about 90 percent of the secondary gold. Results of the study indicate that loss of gold is small, and refiners and consumers are accelerating programs designed to reduce recovery costs. With the increasing generation of low-grade industrial scrap, research is needed to improve present recovery techniques and to develop methods to accelerate the flow of secondary gold back to supply.
