In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. The Bureau of Mines used laminar hot air jets of l/8- to 3/4-inch diam-eter to determine the hot gas ignition temperatures of various combustible vapor-air mixtures. The combustibles were n-hexane, n-octane, n-decane, a hydrocarbon jet fuel (JP-6), and an adipate ester aircraft engine oil (MIL-L- 7808). Minimum ignition temperatures occurred at a fuel to air weight ratio of about 0.5 and were not greatly sensitive to variations of fuel concentra¬tion. Moderate variations of jet velocity also had little influence on these ignition temperatures. However, these temperatures decreased with increase in heat source dimensions (jet diameter). The hot gas ignition temperatures of the combustibles were not necessarily much greater than corresponding autoignition and wire ignition temperatures when the size (,F the heat source and the ignition criterion were the same.

Laboratory investigations have produced flotation concentrates contain- ing 91 to more than 92 percent titania, with fair recoveries, from the Christy property, Hot Spring County, Ark. The titanium-bearing ore on the Christy property occurs in a quartz-clay- iron oxide mineralization, which contains, on the average, about 6.0 percent TiO2, chiefly as the mineral brockite; brookite and rutile are different crys- talline forms of titanium dioxide. Recent work by the Bureau of Mines has shown that titanium chloride can be produced readily from the rutile-type mineral by reduction with coke fol- lowed by low-temperature chlorination. Metallic titanium is in turn derived etallic from the chloride by the Kroll process .

Following an unsuccessful attempt earlier in the program to develop and market a drill channelling machine, we have designed and tested a new continuous channelling method which reduces operating sound levels to below 100 db. This new method relies on a small diameter oxygen-enriched burner to produce narrow channels. Sound intensities are reduced substantially compared to conventional channel widths. They are further reduced by a water spray directed immediately above the flame. Baffles placed along the top of the channel will reduce sound levels to below 90 db. Cutting rates are greater than those of existing channelling burners with costs per unit of channel area substantially reduced for those cases where oxygen costs are reasonable.

It is thought that a brief description of the unique mining and milling procedure at the Doyle nine may be interesting to those engaged in small-scale operations at old mines or in working new ore body adjacent to old workings. It also shows what can be done with r. small capital outlay in working a zinc-lead mine on a small scale; as the operation herein described was begun 3 years ago with four men and it now employs 17 men. The original idea was to mine out any ore left around the edges of some old stones above the water level and to rob pillars after an old stope became filled with waste and tailings. This has been done, and the procedure is still being followed; at the same time a paying lead is being mined toward an area in which churn-drill holes have shown ore. Also, preparations are now being made to do some pumping.

"The oxidation of NADPH by vanadate(V) in the presence of glutathione reductase showed typical enzymatic kinetics. The oxidation was inhibited by N-ethylmaleimide, a glutathione reductase inhibitor. Superoxide dismutase had no significant effect on the oxidation, indicating non-involvment of the superoxide radical. The vanadate(V) reduction was found to be a one-electron transfer process. These results suggest a new pathway for vanadate(V) metabolism and a new function of glutathione reductase. Compounds of vanadium(V), such as NaV03 , exert potent toxic effects on a wide variety of biological systems (1-3). Despite intense current activity, however, the biochemical mechanism of vanadate(V) toxicity is still not well understood (1- 14). It is believed that one of the important pathways involves the oxidation (by vanadate(V)) of NAD(P)H (15, 16), but, to our knowledge, there has been no report of the identification of any vanadate(V) reductase. With a view to finding if there exists any vanadate(V) reductase, we have investigated the oxidation of NADPH by vanadate(V) in the presence of glutathione reductase. Glutathione reductase (GSSG-R)2 was selected because our previous studies have shown (17) that GSSG-R can act as a reductase for chromate(VI), which is isoelectronic with vanadate(V). We find that GSSG-R does indeed function as a NADPH-dependent vanadate(V) reductase, thus pointing to a new pathway for the metabolism of vanadate(V), as well as to this property for GSSG-R. MATERIALS AND METHODSSodium metavanadate (NaV03 ), henceforth vanadate, was purchased from Aldrich and its solution was always freshly prepared. The GSSG·R used was from bovine intestinal mucosa and was purchased from Sigma. The oxidation of NADPH was followed photometrically as the decrease in absorbance at 340 nm. The spin trap, 5,5-dimethyl- pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO), was purchased from Aldrich and used without further purification, since very weak or no spin adduct signal was obtained from the purchased sample when used alone.ESR spectra were obtained at X-band (9.7 GHz) using a Bruker ER200 ESR spectrometer. The magnetic field was calibrated with a self-tracking NMR gaussmeter (Bruker, Model ER035A) and the microwave frequency was measured with a digital frequency counter (Hewlett-Packard, Model 5340A). An ASPECT 2000 computer was used for data storage and analysis. The concentrations given in the figure legends are the final concentrations. All experiments were carried out in the phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.2) and at room temperature."

"INTRODUCTION Over the past several years a new type of cascade impactor that utilizes small nozzle diameters (micro-orifice nozzles) has been under development (Kuhlmey et al., 1981; Marple et al., 1981). The small nozzle dimensions allow for particles to be collected as small as 0.024 µm aerodynamic diameter on the last stage of the impactor. To obtain a reasonable flow rate of 30 I min - i through the impactor, a large number of nozzles (up to 2000) are required per stage.Furthermore, by locating the nozzles of multi-nozzle stages in a prescribed manner (described in detail by Marple et al., 1981) and rotating the impaction plates relative to the nozzle plates, uniform deposits can be achieved on the impaction plates. As described by Marple et al. (1981), the advantages of a uniform deposit impactor over the conventional impactor that collects particles only beneath stationary nozzles are: (1) maximum use of the impaction substrate surface, reducing both particle bounce (if substrates are greased) and tare weights of the substrates (if particle mass is measured gravimetrically); (2) deposited particles can be analyzed for elemental composition by X-ray fluorescence (Dzubay and Rieke!, 1978); and (3) the pressure in the impactor can be kept relatively high compared to low pressure impactors that depend on a large slip correction to achieve small particle collection (some types of particles may evaporate at low pressures). The work described in this paper investigates two additional advantages of a uniform deposit impactor. These are: (1) the possibility of collecting two separate deposits at one time on one stage for two types of analysis techniques, and (2) the possibility of utilizing piezoelectric quartz crystal impaction plates more effectively by eliminating the deposit location sensitivity nature of the crystals (Schulze-Frohlich, 1981 ).MICRO-ORIFICE UNIFORM DEPOSIT IMPACTOR (MOUDI)A photograph of an eight-stage MOUDI is shown in Fig. 1. Tungsten from the hydrogen reduction of WF was vapor - deposited to coat MERM (Material Evaluation Rocket Motor ) graphite and rhenium- lined graphite nozzles . These nozzles have surface configurations that preclude the conventional fabrication of high- density- tungsten liners . Operation at 550 ° C produced selectively placed uniform coatings of specified thicknesses at near theoretical density . An acceptable coating could not be deposited on a beryllia nozzle because of an undesirable side reaction between the substrate and one or more of the products of the reduction reaction .

"The biologic events leading to coal workers' pneumoconiosis (C'WP) are not yet fully understood. There is no good correlation between toxicity studies or animal models with human epidemiologic and pathologic data. Several studies have shown that the severity and prevalence of the CWP in miners correlate strongly with the rank and type of the coal mined. However this has not been found to be the case with laboratory animal models or in vitro studies. In 1980 Russian scientists Artemov and Resnik suggested that the discrepancy may be related to the excessive amount of short-lived free radicals present in freshly generated coal mine dust. Because of their short life, such free radicals would be absent in the ""stale"" coal dust used in most animal experiments. To test this hypothesis we have undertaken a systematic study of the generation, reactivity with oxygen and biological significance of free radicals in coal dust.Electron spin resonance (ESR) was used as a technique for the direct detection of radical production and kinetics of decay. ESR signals from the newly generated radicals decreased with time on exposure to oxygen or when stored in biological buffers at a rapid rate. In vitro biological tests were carried out which suggest that the reaction between the newly generated radicals and oxygen plays a significant role in the sample's cytotoxicity.Materials and MethodsESR measurements were made at X-band (~9.7 GHz) using a computer-controlled Bruker ER200D ESR spectrometer. 11te two coals studied in detail were obtained from the Pennsylvania State University Coal Depository. These were, a bituminous sample, PSOC-1172 (72% carbon) and an anthracite sample, PSOC 867 (95% carbon). Coal particles of several millimeter (mm) dimensions were evacuated to a pressure of ~10-3 mm Hg typically overnight. Without exposure to air, these particles were ground in an agate mortar with an agate pestle for about 30 minutes and then sieved through a 20 \1111 mesh filter before ESR measurements or cytotoxicity studies. As an index of cytotoxicity, hemolysis was measured according to the method of Harrington, with minor modifications. Sheep erythrocytes (2%) were incubated with test samples at 37°C for one hour, and the hemoglobin released was quantitatively estimated photometrically. Additionally, release of alveolar macrophage enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LOH) was estimated after incubation of the macrophages with the coal particles at different time intervals after the grinding. Enzyme activity was assayed according to the method of Wrobleski and LaDue and expressed as percent of enzyme released in 2 hours per million cells with 1 mg of coal."

Fifty years ago, the belief that "fillers" were added to paints for the sole purpose of diluting and cheapening the pigment may have been justified; but paint technology has made tremendous progress since that time, and today both the manufacturer and the consumer know that the judicious use of fillers may add desirable properties to a paint that cannot be introduced in any other way. A growing respect for these accessory materials has led to the use of the more euphemistic term "extender." The names "extender" and "filler" are to a considerable degree synonymous. The newer term, "extender," is adopted in this paper, though it is actually no more descriptive than the older name. Stewart's3/ definition of extender is: "A cheap pigment, usually of an inert type, used to extend or increase the bulk of a paint, thus reducing its unit cost. Extenders are also used to adjust the consistency of a paint and to let down colored pigments of great tinting strength. The use of an extender in a paint does not necessarily mean the resultant product will be inferior. In fact, extenders sometimes, improve -certain characteristics of a film." All extenders are not cheap, as, for example, wet-ground mica and diatomite. Research in the, use of extenders (also sometimes called "inerts") has been one of the host active branches of study in the paint field; and many thousands of dollars have been spent in establishing the physical and chemical characteristics required of various natural mineral extenders for numerous paint formulas

The exingencies of a world war have brought home to the American public, especially the people of the. Eastern States, the urgent need for conserving fuel. Transportation problems in the East have created an unprecedented situation wherein fuel-oil supplies are greatly restricted, and the consequent increase in demand for coal further complicates the problem of transporting and storing that commodity. People should awaken to the need for utilizing every possibly means of conserving to fuel, even to the extent of reducing the temperature in their homes.

"The increase in tunneling operations that requires working under pressures greater than that of ordinary atmosphere has raised the question of the use and possible limitations of respiratory protective devices under such unusual conditions. As little, if any, information is available, there is need for a comprehensive study of this subject before specific recommendations can be made. In the absence of such data it seems desirable to make a few preliminary observations regarding the problems associated with wearing respiratory protective devices under increased air pressures.Two distinct problems must be considered--the mechanics of the apparatus used under such conditions and the physiological effects of increased pressures on wearers of respiratory apparatus. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the effects of various established and potential soil-stabilization additives to hydraulic backfill. This initial phase is an evaluation of the effect of inclusion of varying amounts of Portland cement and combinations of cement and a dispersant on the bearing strength of backfill. Results of unconfined compression tests are given for over 200 sample cylinders incorporating a fill material with cement or cement and dispersant. Inclusion of a minor amount of dispersant (0.2 percent by weight) is found to yield a significant increase in strength for 20-to-1 and leaner sand-cement mixes. An apparent optimum concentration of dispersant exists beyond which no further increase in strength is achieved. A dispersant-cement ratio of l.8- to-1 yielded a strength increase of 515 percent over the strength of untreated 40-to-l sand-cement mixes.

The Fairbanks mining district forms an arc 40 miles long and 8 miles wide on the north side of the Tanana Valley in central Alaska. This is a region of broad valleys and rounded hills that range in elevation from 600 to 2,600 feet Lode-gold production started in 1910 and has continued sporadically to the present, but the largest single mine produced only 40 tons per 24-hour day. Total recorded lode-gold production of the district is 241,000 fine troy ounces of gold from ore that averaged 1.32 fine ounces per ton. The ore was mined chiefly from narrow veins and veinlets alined along anticlinal folds at Ester Dome and the Pedro Dome-Cleary area. The only proven reserves are reported to be at the Ryan Lode at Ester Dome and at the Keystone Mines, Inc., holdings in the Pedro Dome-Cleary area. An inferred lode-gold resource for the district of approximately 4,000,000 ounces is considered to indicate only the order of magnitude of the lode-gold potential because of the absence of detailed data needed to evaluate the numerous deposits.

"INTRODUCTION A soluble mediator has been described which is released from activated rabbit leukocytes and induces histamine secretion from rabbit platelets (Barbaro and Zvaifler, 1966; Siraganian and Osler, 1971). This factor has been isolated, characterized and named platelet activating factor, PAF (Bcnveniste et. al., 1972). PAF has since been chemically identified as l-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphocholine (Benveniste et. al., 1979; Demopoulous et. al., 1979).PAF is a lipid mediator of broad biological activity. It causes smooth muscle contraction, contraction of lung tissue and decreased FEV 1; while enhancing capillary permeability thus causing edema (Pinkard, 1983). In addition, PAF is a chemoattractant and can lead to inflammation.PAF has been reported to stimulate the release of lysosomal enzymes, leukotriene B,, and lipid metabolites from neutrophils (Smith et. al., 1983; Shaw et. al., 1981; Lin et. al., 1982; O'Flaherty et. al., 1984). The objective of the present investigation was to further characterize PAP-induced stimulation of granulocytes and to develop a bioassay, i.e. chemiluminescence, for screening PAF receptor antagonists and inhibitors of PAP-induced activation of granulocytes. The possible use of the chemiluminescence assay to monitor PAF synthesis by human granulocytes is also described.METHODSBlood was drawn from healthy volunteers into a blood storage bag containing CPD anticoagulant. Granulocytes were partially purified by dextran sedimentation and further purified by centrifugal elutriation as described previously (Jones et. al., 1980). Granulocytes obtained by this procedure were approximately 95 percent pure. The number of granulocytes in this preparation was determined using an electronic cell counter (Coulter Model Z1, Coulter Instrument Co., Hialeah, FL). Isolated granulocytes were used to monitor membrane potential, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide release, oxygen consumption, calcium uptake and, in some cases, chemiluminescence. Studies of PAF receptor antagonists were conducted using neutrophils isolated by density centrifugation. Briefly, blood was layered onto Mono-Poly-Resolving Medium (Flow Laboratories, McLean, VA) and centrifuged at 22 °C and 300 g for 30 min. Neutrophils collected from the second band of this gradient were at least 90 percent pure."

The average visitor to a large electric-shovel operation may wonder how electric power can be treated as carelessly as apparently it is in open-pit mining, and how the mining company can string it carelessly along the ground in great, black, hoselike cables, whereas the power company, which has learned to respect his deadly agency, keeps power lines far out of reach. This is explained by the fact that this particular kind of application of power to moving machinery requires the use of trailing cable instead of the more permanent type of construction that permits a moving contact, such as a trolley. The cables are designed to insulate fully the enclosed power lines against damage and loss of current; and employees are taught to handle them carefully, although engineers are not satisfied that the trailing cable is foolproof and are seeking constantly to improve methods and equipment to insure greater safety. In some sections they rely mainly on the construction of the cable and perfection of equipment, while in others additional precautions are taken, such as handling the cable with rubber gloves, slings, tongs, or loops. In some sections no temporary repairs are made to cables, while in others such repairs are made and later are vulcanized in the shop. At some operations the cycle of shovel duties is arranged so that cables are very seldom exposed to flying rock fragments while at others this exposure appears to be unavoidable. Methods of fastening the cable to the shovel frame and transporting the loose cable vary. Inspection and care of the cable are important in insuring its safety and durability. A limited amount of information was obtained by field engineers of the United States Bureau of lines from operators in various parts of the United States, as methods of handling electric-shovel operations differ with the districts; practices followed and equipment used in these districts are described in this circular.

In an effort to decrease noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in coal preparation plant employees, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conduct­ing research to identify and control dominant noise sources in vibrating screen (VS) machines. To this end, acoustic measurements of the noise radiated by a dewatering VS were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) using microphone phased-array technology. These measurements allowed for the identification of the screen as the dominant source in the 250 Hz 1/3-octave band. The sidewalls are the major contributors in the 315 and 400 Hz bands, whereas the eccentric mechanisms and the electric motor are the dominant sources in the 800 and 1,000 Hz bands, respectively.

Composite diaphragms were used in the investigation of electrowinning Ti from TiC14 in a fused LiCl-KCI-TiC'2 electrolyte. Composite diaphragms tested were of two general classes--those consisting of two or more solid materials, and those which contained, in addition, a loose material. An electrowinning cell using a flat diaphragm is described. The maximum current density for these diaphragms was 300 amp per ft2. Lower currents permitted longer operation times. The composite diaphragms gave electrode efficiencies that averaged approximately 60 percent, and the electrowon titanium was of good quality--some Brinell hardnesses were as low as 68.
