Such is my case at a West Virginia coal mine where a mine manager was desperately seeking a way to eliminate coal damage on cast shots while maintaining cast percentage without the expensive process of secondary drilling. This paper will focus on how bottom hole air decking is solving the problem.

On the 5 September 2014 a road train (tractor-trailer) with two trailers carrying ammonium nitrate was involved in a single vehicle accident on the Mitchell Highway, 30 kilometers (18 miles) south of Charleville in Central Queensland, Australia. The ammonium nitrate was being transported to a mine site for use as a blasting explosive. The truck came to rest in the creek bed adjacent to a road bridge and caught fire. The vehicle burnt for over one hour before the load of ammonium nitrate exploded. Miraculously there were no fatalities; however eight people nearby sustained injuries, some seriously. The road and rail bridge over Angellala Creek were destroyed and vehicles in the nearby vicinity were seriously damaged. The truck carrying the ammonium nitrate was completely destroyed with over 2500 pieces of debris scattered up to one thousand yards (one kilometer) from the blast site.

Many technical challenges were encountered while conducting near-field construction blasting between the critical intersection of Interstate 10 and multiple active railroad tracks in El Paso, Texas, for the Loop 375 Border West Expressway Project. Blasting was utilized for the removal of an andesite bedrock ridge in preparation for the construction of a new elevated super structure to be suspended over the existing railroad tracks. There was concern that the excessive vibrations and/or permanent rock deformation produced from the blasting within near proximity (20 feet, or 6.09 meters) of the railroad tracks would induce excessive stress and foul the tracks by shifting the alignment. This could result in a major loss of scheduling control between the two major railroad companies that operate in this area. With an increasing pressure to find efficiencies in the mining industry, operations are looking for continuous improvement tools to validate blasting procedures, a crucial and often overlooked area of the process. Using case studies completed at both small and large-scale mining operations, this technical paper proposes a practical methodology for pattern expansion studies, taking into account terrain parameters, rock quality and explosive strength. This technical paper will use a series of tools geared towards an economical continuous improvement procedure, using UAV particle size analysis to optimize blasting based on “generalized reduced gradient” for non-linear problems, with cost savings being the main objective. For the validation of this methodology, one scenario was created based on the operation’s budget: an economical continuous improvement plan that relied on manual data collection methods in order to baseline and optimize procedures.

To better protect the nation and inform difficult defense and preparedness decisions, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is performing a probabilistic risk assessment of explosive terrorism risk to the US homeland. After assessing existing models against requirements, well-developed mathematical descriptions and algorithms associated with explosives hazards were combined with probabilistic modeling techniques used in DHS chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) terrorism risk assessments to create a suitable interior explosive consequence model for assessing the impact to human health.

In surface coal mining, the performance of a shovel through blasted muck is one of the key performance indicators of the blast. Historically, performance has been measured qualitatively based on operator feedback or visuals of the muckpile. More complete shovel data, such as loading times and GPS location, is available from most fleet dispatch systems that are already in place at most truck and shovel operations. With some database and analysis skill, the drill and blast team can take advantage of this data to make targeted improvements to drill and blast designs. An area typically known to cause trouble for shovel operators at this operation are blast boundaries. Blast patterns with and without design changes along the boundaries were studied in this case study. The instantaneous loading times for each shovel pass were analyzed for 75 blasts across two subsequent benches with similar firing direction and shovel paths. The benches were split into three categories: Main body of pattern, boundary with design change, and boundary with no design change. The loading times from the main body of the patterns and where the design change was utilized in the boundary had similar prevalence of good loading times. However, boundary areas without the deign change had approximately 2% more prevalence of poor loading times compared to the main boundary of the pattern. Improving the dig rates through the boundaries up to the average loading time would result in approximately 280 hours taken off the total loading time for one bench. By quantifying the shovel’s performance by GPS location, the drill and blast team can decide how much of a design change is needed, can target precisely only the areas that require it and measure the impact of any changes made

In densely populated cities such as Hong Kong, where unoccupied space is becoming more valuable as the population grows, city planners are more often looking to underground space to meet the increasing need for transportation and services. Given the dense population of people, amenities and high-rise buildings above or near such underground space, it is essential to minimise any disturbance and potential damage during construction. Hence, the excavation of hard rock to develop such underground space can be highly restricted, expensive and time consuming. This is the case for many of the tunnels currently being excavated by drill and blast directly underneath Hong Kong’s busiest business districts and most popular residential areas.

In an effort to recover Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s) that had leached into bedrock below the Hudson River in Upstate New York, a shaft and tunnel complex was designed that would allow installation of inclined and vertical wells into the zones of contamination to recover PCB’s by gravity. A joint venture of Merco Inc., of Lebanon, NJ, and Obayashi Corporation, of San Francisco, CA, was awarded the contract for constructing the first Tunnel Drain Collection System in the world. Conventional drill and blast techniques were the most economical method to construct the project but due to the presence of PCB’s and community concerns, innovative drill and blast practices were needed.

This study was undertaken in order to determine a conservative estimate of the attenuation rate of vibrations through the shallow limestone in South Florida due quarry blasting. The natural limestone bedrock in occurs at or near the surface in southeastern peninsular Florida. While the shallow overburden soils is advantageous for mining purposes, vibrations from blasting has been a contentious issue in South Florida due to the proximity of the mines to several residential communities. White Rock Quarries and Krome Quarries are two active mining facilities in South Florida which generate numerous complaints, insurance claims, and lawsuits from residents in nearby communities who claim that the vibrations cause damage to their houses. Both quarries are located on the eastern edge of the Everglades, with thousands of nearby residences at the western edge of development in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. Data obtained from over 400 publicly available blast monitoring and associated seismograph reports from White Rock Quarries were reviewed and compiled. The data was used to emperically develop a conservative estimate of the ground attenuation rate based on the scaled distance from the blast origin, which can be compared to Figure B-1 from USBM RI 8507 to determine whether it is feasible if damage could have occurred at a given property.

The vibration effect of the buried oil pipeline caused by tunneling blasting affects the pipeline safe transportation, tunnel construction schedule and its construction cost. The dynamic response characteristic of the buried pipeline under blast loads is the foundation of designing blasting scheme as well as the prerequisite to pipeline safety. Taking the blasting engineering of Xiannvyan tunnel passing through a buried oil pipeline of the high-speed railway from Xi’an to Chengdu as the background, according to the space relation between tunnel and pipeline as well as the charge structure of V-cut blasthole, the 3D non-linear dynamic finite element model of tunnel-pipeline was established in the light of the equivalent explosive. The vibration response of the ground surface over pipeline resulting from V-cut blasting was simulated by LS-DYNA finite element program. Comparing with the measured vibration velocity waveforms in site, the accuracy and reliability of the numerical model are well verified. On the base of the simulation method, the coupling dynamic response characteristic between buried oil pipelines and soil was further studied and the Von-Mises stress distribution of pipeline wall was obtained. The safety of buried oil pipeline was quantitatively analyzed through the inside stress data of pipeline given by the simulation calculation above. The analytic results show that the maximum vertical vibration velocity of pipeline on the interface between pipeline and soil is 1.62~5.07 times as large as that of soil. When the buried pipeline is located over the tunnel and 13 m (42.6 ft) away from tunnel, the maximum vertical vibration velocity of ground surface caused by V-cut blasting with charge weight 17 kg (28.6 lb) is 3.17cm/s (1.25 in/s) and the vertical peak vibration velocity of pipeline top is about four times as the ground location directly above the pipeline. Meanwhile, the peak dynamic stress of the buried pipeline caused by blasting vibration is only 2.35% of the allowable stress of steel pipeline. The maximum superimposed stress of the blasting dynamic stress and the hoop stress produced by the pipeline internal pressure is 242.56 MPa (35 180.36), which implies that the buried oil pipeline is completely safe under the conditions of the given tunnel blasting scheme.

The problem of predicting damage in densely developed areas due to incidental or malicious explosions is one of considerable importance to local, state, and federal governmental bodies. The difficulty of making such a prediction is confounded by the urban canyon phenomenon as the shock wave intensifies or rarefies depending upon the particular arrangement of buildings. The specific method detailed herein used a Computational Fluid Dynamics solver, ANSYS AUTODYN, to operate on Geographic Information Systems data, ArcGIS, which captured the geospatial relationship between the various buildings in downtown Oklahoma City, prior to the Murrah Building bombing. The model of Oklahoma City was first developed using the building footprints and elevations provided by the ArcGIS database. Due to the sheer size of the problem, the model was then subdivided into annular zones of increasing distance from the center of the blast. Each subsection was then solved using an Euler model in a cascading fashion with the output of the preceding model forming the input of the present model. To further reduce computational time, the size of the Euler nodes was increased at each stage as the section area increased. Due to the loss of precision in capturing peak pressure values when using larger size nodes, it was necessary to perform a transformation on the results using one dimensional wedge calculations with higher precision. The Murrah Building bombing event was an excellent case study due to its available ArcGIS data and the level of documentation of damage to surrounding structures due to the blast. The results from the staged CFD calculation were then used to develop a damage potential contour map. The use of military-type energetic materials in commercial explosive products is not a new concept. In the United States, the techniques for utilizing significant quantities of surplus military explosive materials by commercial explosive manufacturers dates back to the 1950’s. At times, explosive companies have found surplus military high explosives and propellant materials to be suitable ingredients for their commercial explosive products. The availability of these military-type energetic materials has varied over the past 50 years, as a function of the military’s strategic defense needs and the advances in modern weapon technology. For the most part, the commercial explosives industry has been able to implement methods for safely incorporating military-type high explosives and propellant materials, whenever these surplus materials become available. During the past 5-6 year period, a large amount of military-type energetic materials have once again become available for recycling into commercial explosives. This situation can be attributed to a number of factors, such as the political changes in Europe, the development of more sophisticated weapons systems, and the increased EPA pressures on the U.S. Department of Defense for disposing of surplus energetic materials. As in the past, U.S. commercial explosive manufacturers have made efforts to recycle these surplus materials into their explosive products. This paper describes some of the commercial explosive products that are currently on the U.S. market, which contain rocket and gun propellants as energetic ingredients. Some U.S. explosive companies, such as DYNO NOBEL, ORICA and Slurry Explosive Corporation, have been able to recycle significant quantities of surplus smokeless powder and composite propellants as energetic ingredients into their commercial Blasting Agents. The successes enjoyed by these companies have once again shown recycling into commercial explosive products to be an economically and environmentally sound method for disposing of surplus military-type energetic materials.

Meramec Mining Company's Pea Ridge underground mine is presently involved in a large scale pillar recovery program and has made use of both rotary and down-the-hole drills for large diameter blastholes. Groups of pillars have been blasted with water gels in massive blasts which have broken in excess of one million tons of ore per blast. An outgrowth of the pillar recovery program is the combination of rotary and down-the-hole drills to develop vertical "raises" between mine levels. This paper outlines the Pea Ridge procedure for pillar blasting including the use of non-electric caps. Techniques and loading rates are discussed, and safeguards against blasting damage which were developed as a result of the program are presented.

Increasing civil development and more complex extraction scenarios make the trade off between proficient vibration control and productivity difficult to ascertain. Historically, reduction of induced vibrations levels was achieved through a reduction of MIC’s leading to smaller but more frequent blasts in order to meet extraction targets.

Among these regulators are the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) who implements codes that better ensure both occupational and public safety which is influenced by professional blasting projects and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), who enforces commercial explosives storage and security, among other responsibilities.

Hydrogen Peroxide Emulsion (HPE) explosives are an alternative to conventional commercial explosives. HPE does not contain nitrates or ammonia thus eliminating post-detonation NOx fumes and aqueous nitrate discharge. Production of HPE is less carbon intensive than industry standard ammonium nitrate-based emulsions (ANE) and employment aligns with end users seeking to meet Scope 3 ESG emission targets. Swedish tunneling contractor Implenia Sverige was awarded the Högdalen Depot Expansion Project by the City of Stockholm. Implenia Sverige partnered with Hypex Bio to be the first to pilot the application of a nitrate-free explosive system in a large-scale civil construction tunnel. The purpose of the joint project was to evaluate the operational suitability of replacing conventional nitrate-based bulk explosives with HPE in a large-scale tunnelling project. When the project commenced in September 2023 both standard nitrate-based emulsions and HPE emulsion were used in parallel (Tunnel Right and Tunnel Left) to enable operational, performance, and environmental comparison. Identical drill patterns and initiation techniques were applied to both tunnel headings. Performance data collected included round advance, usage, and perimeter quality. Implenia managed all drilling and charging operations and Hypex Bio provided technical support, including technicians and chemists. HPE is viscous and pumpable using conventional emulsion pumping delivery systems. Variable density functionality enabled loading different charge weights into cut, lifter, production, and perimeter holes. The primary rock type was hard sedimentary gneiss with approximately 150 MPa [21,755 psi] Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS). Fracture systems with infilling occurred in both tunnel directions. Rock quality factor was “Good to Very Good” on the RMRb (Rock Mass Rating) scale. Epiroc Boomer rigs were used to drill rounds averaging 4.9 m [16 ft] deep with high accuracy and precise reference positioning.
