The Bureau of Mines performed a comparative study of nine sites at eight surface coal mines to determine if the presence of near-surfaced underground abandoned workings resulted in the generation of adverse long-duration, low-frequency blast vibrations. Six of the nine sites had underlying workings, and two had thick layers of low-velocity unconsolidated surface material.

A large iron ore open pit mine in Brazil operates with reduced blast sizes, due to the imminence of red alerts in the rainy season and the proximity of plant and dam structures that demand control of the maximum load of fired explosives. Blasts are currently not allowed to remain loaded with explosives due to the risk of red alerts, limiting mine operations close to them. There is a need to increase the blast sizes, reducing the number of events required to obtain the planned mass and, consequently, the unproductive operating hours lost with mine evacuations. The WebGen™ wireless electronic initiation system is a technology for firing detonators via lowfrequency magnetic induction that propagates through the medium, without physical connection. A blast was carried out with 406 holes divided into 4 panels, aiming to validate the preloading technique with wireless detonators and its performance in safety and productivity. The absence of lead wires in the system eliminates the risk of interaction between vehicles and detonator cables in stemming and loading operations, which can result in unplanned detonation or misfire. By eliminating the need for a spotter, it reduces people's exposure to dust and the risk of human-machine interaction. Furthermore, it eliminates the risk of unplanned detonation caused by lightning strikes. The pre-loading technique with wireless detonators enables flexibility and efficiency in planning through temporary accesses over loaded areas. In the demonstration, driving over the loaded area was essential to avoid jams and excessive wear on equipment due to the narrow berm and very friable material. Another gain in productivity was optimizing operational stages, since detonators were programmed in parallel with loading, anticipating process stages, in addition to eliminating the need to connect detonators. Considering the average handling and savings in downtime due to the reduction of blasting events, a potential increase in movement of 49,000t (54,013 short tons) in 3 months was estimated, keeping the vibration results within the required limit. The trial with wireless detonators demonstrated the feasibility of carrying out blasts with preloaded panels, without restrictions on the number of panels or detonators, enabling vibration control, innovating mine planning and increasing safety and productivity

A wedge-shaped underwater rock plug has to be blasted in order to tap the reservoir and furnish water to a new underground powerhouse at Manicouagan-5. The paper deals with the design and engineering aspects of drilling and blasting of this plug where the topographical configuration is extremely difficult. In this study small diameter vertical holes are considered with the OD-method and a fixed platform is recommended for drilling and loading operations.

In part one we discussed a Chinese seismoscope allegedly invented and used in the year 136 (or 132, depending on the source). Interestingly, historical references to the measurement of earth movements then seem to be nonexistent until up into the 1700’s. There could be two explanations for this hiatus: first, that there were no earthquakes in the world for 1600 years, or, second, the “Dark Ages” really did exist, where intellectual inquiry and all sorts of learning came to a halt. Of course there were earthquakes, so the explanation for the lack of a record of invention is the reality of the Dark Ages. explained is the fact that the Dark Ages ended in about A.D. 1000, but that is beyond the scope of this story.

This paper is written in response to a request from the UTRC Committee on Perimeter Control Blasting. That Committee is conducting "follow-on" research on the selection of appropriate blasting designs and products for perimeter control of rock excavations. This paper will deal with the rock mechanics principles which affect the outcome of such blasting, and explain to the reader how to apply techniques which will modify the typical site response one would expect for conventional blasting methods. For convenience of reference, and to emphasize the important concept that the application of this technique is site specific, that is it must be custom-designed for each site, the technique is being called "Modified Site Response Blasting".

Metal-oxidant blends are ordinarily unsuitable as diiect replacements for explosives, because the reaction occurs too slowly. Oxide coatings protect metals, preventing or delaying reaction. By contrast, the electrically-activated reactive composites described below are configured as metal fibers or foils in close proximity to oxidants, with continuous electrical paths from one end to the other. By quickly vaporizing the metal component with an electrical pulse, a reactive composite will be activated, and the reaction will occur rapidly.

In 2008 a paper from the same source describing four actual cases of exposure of electronic detonators to lightning strikes was presented. It was shown that electronic detonators, like other initiation systems, are vulnerable to very close or direct lightning strikes. At the time of submitting this abstract no further incidents with lightning have been experienced. As a result of those original incidents, and in order to understand how the safety devices inside electronic detonators break down, two series of tests have been done, each with 2 detonator designs. In the first series detonators were subjected to capacitor discharges up to 6kV and 1kJ in energy. In the second series the intensity was increased to 800kV and 24kJ in energy. In the second series, more electrical energy was delivered to the detonator assembly than the explosive energy of the detonator. In both series both detonators showed a spectacular ability to resist very high discharge energies. The tests are described in detail with supporting photographs. The data for both pin-to-pin and pin-to-case (more relevant to lightning) are presented and discussed. The mechanism of breakdown of safety devices is now understood better and the learning is being used to design more robust products. The detonability of a chemically gassed emulsion explosive has been studied in recent tests, after the study of three micro-balloon sensitized emulsion explosives. Blasting experiments in steel pipes and computer simulation have been carried out. This study showed that the gassed emulsion explosive and the micro-balloon sensitized emulsion explosives have different desensitization features. Namely, the gassed emulsion explosive can recover its detonability very rapidly after the pressure vanishes, in contrary to the micro-balloon sensitized explosives.

This paper describes a method of evaluating shot performance through the use of available mine- data. The mine had already been monitoring the following parameters for other purposes: drill penetration rates, shovel loading rates, crusher throughput, crusher power and crusher hangups. By assigning pit coordinates to these factors, maps showing the location of difficult and favorable blasting are as are identified. Products and techniques are compared by the same method.

The application of Fourier spectral analysis to records of ground vibration generated by over 100 explosions from an open pit mine is used to develop empirical predictor equations that relate the response spectra to the blasting parameters used to generate the excitation motion. Time series representations of ground particle velocity are transformed into the frequency domain where the appropriate modifications are made such that the inverse Fourier transform yields the time series representation of particle displacement and acceleration. Compensations are made for the transform function of the recording system in the frequency domain. Spectral analysis of the three types of ground motion is correlated with the blasting parameters. The results show that the frequency content of ground vibrations generated from a mine blast can be quantified in terms of the predictor equations.

The Avalauncher has been an integral tool for avalanche mitigation work for close to 50 years. With their ability to place a kilogram of high explosives up to two thousand meters away, they routinely serve as a short range alternative to military artillery. The Avalauncher’s roots can be traced to a pneumatic baseball pitching machine used by Major League Baseball teams in the United States in the late 1950s. Throughout the decades, many modifications have been made to both the launcher and its projectiles. Current technology has allowed the Avalauncher to attain greater accuracies and operational range. In this paper I plan to cover not only the history of the Avalauncher but also explore its potential future.

The phenomena of post detonation gases in muckpiles is reasonably well known. It causes the 'rumbling' noises occasionally heard after a blast in open pits or quarries and is thought to occur due to initiation of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, etc. by 'hot' spots within the muckpile. The problem usually occurs with highly aluminized products, but can occur with any oxygen deficient product. This phenomenon was never a problem underground due to restriction on access to blast areas, ventilation criteria, etc. until the advent of large diameter blastholes and particularly their use for specialized applications such as drilling for blasting down 'hang-ups' in ore passes.

Presented here is the simplified process of fragmentation of homogeneous rocks by blasting based on experimental studies. Small scale single hole blasting experiments on jointed limestone are described. Results show that directions of joints overshadow the degree of fragmentation and also influence the remaining rock. The possible influence of joints on the process of fragmentation of non-homogeneous rock by blasting is also discussed.
