The process flow-sheet adopted in treating hematite iron ore in India through wet circuit generates not only 15-25% slime of Run-of-Mine (ROM), but also results in loss of very high quality fine iron ore particles along with it. As the reserves of hematite iron ore is depleting, it is necessary to explore the possibility of upgrading other types of low grade iron ore and slime for recovery of iron minerals; extensive research in this field is being carried out. While beneficiation of low grade ore is yet to be established, slime beneficiation has been quite successful and many installations of slime treatment plant are underway. In SAIL mines, the slime is mainly the discarded particles from Classifiers, which are less than 0.2 mm sizes. R& D initiative has been focussed on the beneficiation of the slimes (49-60% Fe, 3-10% Al2O3 & 4-10% SiO2) of Dalli mines to generate concentrates assaying 62-64% Fe, 2-3% Al2O3, 3-4% SiO2 and a few innovative facilities for the same has been introduced at this mines of Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP). At Dalli mines, the slime is of very poor quality. A typical slime analysis assays 48.54% Fe, 15.1% SiO2, 8.5% Al2O3 and consists nearly 60% (by wt.) particles less than 38 micron. Slime analysis revealed substantial quantity of very high density mineral particles, those causes jamming of Thickener due to faster settling. A novel technique has been implemented to classify the concentrate ore particles from the gangue mineral particles by processing through Fluidized Bed Classifier (FBC) system, which is a gravity concentrator, to treat 50% of the slime generated and the rest is treated through de-sliming hydro-cyclone followed by Medium Intensity Magnetic Separator (MIMS). A special self-vibrating launder has been designed and introduced into the system to recover tiny iron ore particles, which could not get captured by the permanent Neodymium rare earth magnet in MIMS. The classified iron mineral particles from FBC are further treated in a battery of hydro-cyclones followed by modified Slow Speed Spiral Classifier (SSSC) unit. Multiple feed entry system to the SSSC unit is unique and use of particular feed entry point depends on the desired quality of the product and thus converted to a beneficiation equipment rather than mere de-watering unit. By processing slime in FBC system, the valuable iron ore particles with 62.5% Fe, 5.2% SiO2, 2.23% Al2O3 has been recovered from the slime at a material yield of 30%. And very high valued concentrate particles with more than 65% Fe has been sorted out through the magnetic separation route. The overall extra production of beneficiated slime concentrate is 40-45 tph with 63-64% Fe from a slime feed of 120-130 tph solid. This paper outlines few new approaches in iron ore slime beneficiation at Dalli mines for maximum recovery of valuable minerals. This paper presents a brief overview of some IRGIREDMET advances in gold hydrometallurgy. Original impulse-percolation technology and equipment for intensive cyanidation of gravity concentrates have been developed and introduced into industrial practice by IRGIREDMET since 1980s (RF Patents N1593250). The process is based on leaching using special hydrodynamic and reagent conditions providing high dissolution rate for coarse gold particles. Gold and silver are precipitated from pregnant solution by cementation or electrowinning. There was also proposed an im-proved cementation method using zinc in a contact with electrically conductive material. The units including closed water recirculation, tails detoxification and semi-dry tails IRGIREDMET is well experienced in gold adsorption technology using ion exchange resins and activated carbons. The comparison of CIL and RIL processes were done for a number of gold mines, for example for Sukhoi Log gold deposit. The properties of prospective foreign and domestic ad-sorbents including strong-base, bi-functional and weak-base resins as well as activated carbons were studied. The Institute has developed some adsorption/elution technologies and equipment, such as a two stage RIP adsorption technology for gold/silver ores, an improved technology for gold elution from loaded resin and carbon, electrowinning cells for gold recovery from RIP and CIP eluates etc. Large scale ?Resin In Pulp? tests using weak-base resin were finalized and process design criteria were developed. Gold plant design is on progress at the moment. Improved technology for carbonaceous (preg-robbing) gold ores was developed. It was tested for some gold deposits including Sukhoi Log. It allows to overcome preg-robbing activities of ores treated and to improve dramatically performance of cyanidation and adsorption circuits. The studies on refractory gold ore treatment including bio-oxidation, pressure oxidation, roasting and ultra-fine grinding were conducted. Heap leach technology was tested and introduced by Irgiredmet for a number of Russian mines. Zinc cementation, activated carbon and ion-exchange resin adsorption were used for gold recovery from pregnant heap leach solutions. The options including combined technology ?Heap leach/ RIL or CIP? for clay ores were also developed and tested. The plant using developed technology is at construction stage now. The study on In-Situ gold leaching was conducted. The comparison of different gold lixiviants for this purpose was carried out. Gold recovery from pregnant leach solution by activated carbon and anionite including gold elution from loaded adsorbents etc. was also studied. In 2000 the In-Situ leaching technology was commissioned at Maminskoye gold deposit (Ural). The technologies for treatment of complex ores and by-products were proposed. For example, the technology of gold, silver, copper and zinc recovery from calcines after sulphuric acid production was developed.

Gross calorific value (GCV) of coals was estimated using artificial neural networks, linear and non-linear regression techniques. Proximate and ultimate analysis results were collected for 187 different coal samples. Different input data sets were compared, such as both proximate and ultimate analysis data, and only proximate analysis data and only ultimate analysis data. It was observed that the best results were obtained when both proximate analysis and ultimate analysis results were used for estimating the gross calorific value. When the performance of artificial neural networks and regression analysis techniques were compared, it was observed that both artificial neural networks and regression techniques were promisingly accurate in estimating gross calorific values. In general, most of the models estimated the gross calorific value within ±3% of the expected value.

Sustainable development requires the optimal use of natural resources and recycling of the wastes. In fact recycling is the final productive use of obsoletes. ELVs, obsolete appliances and industrial wastes have become important resources for production of iron and steels, non-ferrous metals, and composites. Within shredding plants, these obsoletes are firstly shredded to the pieces and then processed to recycle different materials, especially ferrous and non-ferrous metals for metallurgy. Traditional and new developed mineral processing technologies are nowadays used for recycling different materials from waste effluents. Shredding and separating plants are currently recycle the wastes by make use of different technologies to mainly produce raw material for metallurgical application. However, other non-ferrous components are also treated for energy conservation and protecting environment. Currently, recovery in shredding and recycling plants maximises to 75% and about 25% of the feed is land-filled. However, recycling rate must be increased in due to the economical, environ-mental and social concerns. A comprehensive study for recycling, with especial focus on ferrous metal recovery, was sup-ported by Swedish Environmental Agency (MISTRA) to look at possibilities to increase the recycling rate and to reduce the amount of disposal. Part of this study was dedicated to study the shred-ding plant facilities and to look for possibilities to improve the quality and quantity of the shredding product streams. The aims were to improve the quality of ferrous scrap (apparent density > 0.9 and Cu<0.25%) for iron and steel production as well as having better quality for non-ferrous metals through the recycling schema, and finally to treat the shredder residue (SR) to recover metals and plastics to reduce the disposals. This paper summarises the results of sampling and conducting separation tests for improving the recovery of the ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The results indicated to be possible to obtain high quality ferrous scrap at recovery of 88%. However, the total recovery for metal scrap has reached 93%. Furthermore, test results on fine, P< 8mm, shredding residue (SR) showed promising prospect in recovery of metals and protecting environment by physical separation, i.e. electrical separation technique.

The process conditions and mineral characters of cleaning separation stage in magnetite concentration plant are studied in the paper, and the affecting factors and the methods to increase the concentrate grade are analysed and given. The BKJ cleaning special drum magnetic separator is developed specially for the cleaning stage according to process conditions and mineral character. The separation mechanism, structure characters, separation process and excellent adaptability of BKJ special magnetic separator are described. The results in Zhangjiawa Concentration Plant show that the BKJ special drum magnetite separators play an important role in increasing the concentrate grade and improving the economic benefit.

By the micronization-milling of the material, the size and the structure of its particles are changed and it comes to the increasing of the potential energy of the system as well as to the chem-ical activity of the material what is the result of an increased free surface and of the concentration of the grate defects, that is of the internal energy of the system. All these changes that are reached, show that new characteristics of treated materials are got by micronization process. Controlling the process of the micronization and by purpose directing of the new characteristics of the activated materials, we can have the positive effects and use them in more technologies. Talc is important nonmetallic mineral raw material that is widely used as either the basic raw material, or as filler. This has stimulated its technological investigation, as well as the investigation of its physical-chemical characteristics. In this paper are shown experimentally reached results of the physical-chemical characteristics of the talc during the process of the micronization in high energetic mill. In this paper, the optimum conditions of miconization of talc in high-energy-speed rotary mill and its influence micronization on a degree of Fe2O3recovery by hydrometallurgical methodes, are presented. The X-ray analysis of the obtained products showed that high quality talc with low content of can be obtained by these physical-chemical processes In this paper, the principles and application or fine and ultra-fine grinding high-energy attriton mill with small balls, enabling fast, efficient grinding, low energy consumption, short grinding time and easy handling will be described.

In this paper, the producing process of using V2O3 as raw material to obtain vanadium nitride was analyzed through the means of thermodynamic. The analysis shows that conversion follows the principle of reduction step by step in the conversion process of V2O3. The temperature of the reaction system has prominent influence on the nitrogen content of products, and the reaction is very sensitive to temperature. As raising temperature, the fine grain structure of the nitrides is more evident, and the grain size of nitrides increases. At 1703K, the nitrogen content of the products tended to be constant after soaking over 3 hours.

A processing scheme is presented to use one single chemical that has multiple functions to re-duce the use of chemicals and achieve more efficient mineral flotation and solids dewatering. Sti mulisensitive polymers which display hydrophilic/hydrophobic transitions in response to changes in temperature or pH have been found to be useful as such multiple function reagents. They can cause the mineral particles to be either hydrophilic or hydrophobic at one stimuli condition and the opposite at the reverse stimuli condition. Therefore, both particle surface wettability and inter-particle interaction forces are reversibly controllable. When the surface is hydrophilic, particle dispersion is achieved by repulsive inter-particle forces whereas when the surface is hydrophobic, particle aggregation is induced by inter-particle hydrophobic attractive forces. In addition, the hydrophobic surface condition allows for the attachment of particles to bubbles. Flotation and solid settling tests have been conducted with a silica suspension treated with the temperature-sensitive polymer poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM). The results indicated that PNIPAM can be used to induce a transition between hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface character at temperature lower or higher than its critical solution temperature (CST around 32oC). Thus, both effective silica dispersion or hydrophobic aggregation and flotation without adding any additional collector have been demonstrated. In tailings treatment, rapid silica settling was obtained with hydrophobic aggregation at temperature above the CST and further sediment consolidation (and water release) occurred at temperature below the CST. Contact angle measurements confirmed the hydrophilic/hydrophobic transition induced by PNIPAM.

"Nickel sulphide ores subjected to this investigation were taken from Orhaneli district where widespread chromite mineralisation can be occurred. Significant amounts of magnetite and chromite have been existed in the ore together with sulphide and oxide type nickel minerals. Ore sample is constituted about 70% magnetite, 15% sulphide minerals, 5% chromite and iron oxides as well as 10% gangue minerals.According to the chemical analysis results, the representative ore sample contains 1.32% Ni, 10.8% SiO2, 78.4% Fe2O3, 1.3 g/t Ag and 1.0 g/t Au. Mineralogical examinations showed that pentlandite (Fe, Ni)9S8, violarite (Ni, Fe)3S4, millerite NiS and asbolane (Co, Ni)MnO2.(OH)2.1-2H2O were the main nickel minerals and magnetite, chromite, chromium spinals, pyrite, pyrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite, goethite, hematite, limonite, rutile, chlorite, talc and serpentine group minerals as associated minerals.The aim of this investigation was to produce valuable nickel concentrates by using gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation methods. As a results of laboratory scale studies, alternative flow sheets for the production of nickel sulphide concentrate were developed. The related experimental results are given in Table 1."

Water recycling is of prime importance in mineral processing due to consumption of large amount of water. This issue is vital in areas with a low rainfall such as Shahre-Babak (Kerman, Iran). Deep cone thickeners, unlike conventional thickeners, have a low diameter to height ratio where large amounts of flocculants are used to increase particles settling rates. The high bed heights (over 10 m) produce enough pressure to create a paste type underflow indicating maximum water recovery. Flocculent preparation, conditioning, and distribution along with the bed height are among the important factors affecting the performance. Four deep cones are used to recover water from the tailings of the plant. Plant data indicated that the thickener never reached the target underflow percent solids (63%) and the average underflow concentrations were between 49 and 57%. By modification and optimization of flocculent preparation and distribution methods the underflow percent solids increased by 3-4%. This translated to an increase of water recovery from 67 to 73%. A practical an interactive model to describe the operation of a flotation bank of mechanical cells was developed based on the hydrodynamic and metallurgical characterization of large industrial flotation cells. Thus, the mineral grade and recovery, as well as the stream properties along the flotation bank can be described in terms of the operating variables. The model was built considering the flotation bank as a distributed system, so the solution for the water and solids mass balances, per size classes, for each single cell, are sequentially solved. Also, each cell was described by two distinct zones, the collection zone characterized by the flotation rate constant and the froth zone characterized by the froth recovery. The mineral feed was described in terms of the mineral species and particle size classes, using a rectangular flotation rate constant distribution. Also, the effect of changing the actual operating variables (air flowrate, pulp level, pulp density, pulp flowrate, etc.) on the mineral collection process, in the collection (pulp) zone, was considered downstream along the bank. The froth recovery of floatable mineral has been estimated by measuring the mass flowrate of particles entering the froth by true flotation together with the concentrate mass flowrate (ton/h). The mass flowrate of collected particles at the pulp/froth interface level was calculated from direct measurement of bubble load (ton/m3) and gas flowrate (m3/h). Flotation recovery is mainly related to the froth depth and air flowrate. All parameters considered in the model have been adjusted from direct measurements in plant site. Also, the effects of other operating variables such as reagents dosage, top of froth grade, or froth discharge velocity are presently under study. This procedure has been tested using data from industrial rougher operations consisting of flotation banks with 5 cells to 9 cells in series, and different cell sizes, such as 45m3, 130m3, 160m3 and 250m3. Thus, it has been shown that the model approach is a powerful tool for flotation cells diagnosis, operation and development of new control strategies, as well as, to evaluate the effect that de-sign and operating variables have upon the collection and froth zones performance in large flotation cells.

Copper nickel separation is performed by mineral processing techniques both pre and post smelting in Copper Cliff at Vale Canada?s Operations. The separation at Clarabelle Mill takes advantage of the ore mineralogy to affect a separation on the rougher concentrate where chalcopyrite and pentlandite exhibit high liberation and high recoveries thus their separation is simple although incomplete. The copper concentrate comprises only 50% of the copper in ore with the remaining copper being separated post smelting in the Matte Separation plant where the slow cooled Bessemer Matte is again treated by mineral processing operations using flotation to separate the chalcocite and heazlewoodite and magnetic separators to remove a metallic nickel alloy. This paper discusses the mineralogy, separation processes and work currently underway to improve the separation of copper from nickel in these plants.

"For the traditional principle of flotation cell design, or in the perspective of some researchers, the mixing effect of impeller for flotation cell is not only to suspend the particles off the bottom, but also to mix slurry well to achieve a uniform system. But for some special processing conditions, the depth profile of slurry concentration and particle size demonstrates an obvious difference. In the part around of the impeller in the cell, the slurry concentration is much higher than the part below the lip.For the vanadium titano-magnetite flotation process, distinguished with high concentration and large coarse particle size fraction, even though the concentration is very high, it can reach good gas dispersion, which is a fundamental principle for flotation cell design and application. The gas dispersion is not a challenge in the high slurry concentration environment, not only in the vertical direction, but in the cross section. Different levels (the distance from the lip is 400mm, 700mm, 1200mm, 1700mm, 2200mm, 2700mm) slurry in the flotation cell is sampled and analyzed. The slurry concentration of the 3 levels(1700mm, 2200mm, 2700mm) is about 55%, but the slurry concentration decreases from 55% to 25% sharply towards the lip.Therefore, a new understanding and viewpoint is presented, that the uniform system of slurry is not always reasonable for all of the flotation process. For some special process, if the coarse particles are needed to agitated well and transported to the upper cell, the quiescent zone in the upper cell will be destroyed and enhance the detachment probability for the coarse particles. The difference of slurry concentration and particle size fraction benefits the air dispersion and coarse mineral particles recovery.1.INTRODUCTIONNowadays, flotation is the most widely used separation process in the mineral processing industry. Large variations in flotation characteristics of minerals have been observed in winter and summer in plant practices as a result of changes in pulp temperature. Variations in temperature may affect the quality for pulp and related process water through changes in dissociation of different chemical species within the pulp, as well as changing in gas and metal hydroxide solubility, reagent adsorption and its stability on mineral surfaces, water/pulp viscosity, etc. All of these affect the flotation characteristics of specific mineral to some degree or another. It has been observed in Cu-Pb-Zn and/or Pb-Zn sulfides flotation that sphalerite (ZnS) flotation is strongly affected by changes in pulp temperature. Plant practices have shown that at the both low, e.g., T <10-12°C, and high, e.g., T > 60°C, the recovery for copper activated sphalerite is dramatically dropped. Within this paper the effect of pulp temperature on flotation characteristics of sphalerite is brought into considerations and laboratory flotation tests were conducted in conjunction with surface and solution chemistry analysis to understand the effect of temperature on sphalerite recovery. The effect of temperature seems to be complex since the temperature affects both the physical (hydrodynamics) and chemical phenomena in the flotation cell. In fact all sub-processes in flotation, i.e., collision, attachment and detachment, are affected by changing in temperature. Experimental results indicating that at alkaline pH values, e.g., 8.5 to 10.5, the recovery for copper-activated sphalerite is dramatically reduced when temperature is below 10-12°C, which is in agreement with plant practice at Boliden?s Garpenberg plant in Sweden. However, results from other studies indicated that the zinc recovery is also considerably decreased at high pulp temperatures, i.e., 62°C and above.

This paper introduces the application of CRIMM high-gradient magnetic separator in refinement of feldspar powders as well as the supporting technical outfits needed by the refining process with the high-gradient magnetic separator as main equipment. It could reduce the content of Fe2O3 to 0.03% with a deferrization rate of 85.88% from the feldspar raw ore containing 0.17% Fe2O3by using the above refining technology, producing an ultrapure feldspar product.

The per capita energy consumption in India is 510kgoe/year, the global average being nearly 1818kgoe/year. Correspondingly low is the per capita CO2 emission at 1.25t against the world average of 4.39t.65-70%, at times more, of India?s power generation from about 190,000 MW installed capacity, is however coal fired.India therefore has to secure diversified sources of energy and solar power is increasingly being looked as the real alternative to the existing over dependence on coal. To ensure sustainable solar power it is essential to secure its raw material base that is ?silica?, hitherto considered as ?minor minerals?. That calls for immediately addressing the issues of land availability, solar power cost, developing a dynamic inventory of silica containing minerals, appropriate processing technology and strong regulatory framework for sustainable mining and processing of all silica rich minerals. The progress in comminution is often described by the specific surface area and the energy utilization or the brakeage ratio and breakage function. The principal mechanisms of size reduction are therefore, well known. All four parameters share a common disadvantage: They are limited in describing the behavior of a feed material with fine particles and a wide particle size distribution. An alternative is to describe the progress in comminution with ? The particle size distributions Q(x) before and after the stress or ? The particle concentration ratio pcr(x), which combines these two states. In the case of a self-similar fracture behavior, (in short: self-similarity) the progress in comminution can be simplistically described by the relationship between a reference particle size and the stress intensity. Self-similarity means self-similar breakage functions of geometrically similar particles of the same strength, a certain stress situation and stresses up to the breakage point. Self-similar breakage functions show the same curve at different stress intensities when the fragment size x is normalized with a reference particle size xNorm. This behavior was demonstrated for single particle comminution repeatedly and unequivocally. In the field of particle bed comminution, these results differ in literature. Therefore, the self-similarity in particle bed comminution was systematically investigated at the Institute of Mechanical Process Engineering and Mineral Processing of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg as part of a research project. Limestone, quartz, silicon carbide and glass beads, were examined with a hydraulic press. The particle sizes covered monodisperse fractions in the range of 1-1000 µm, bimodal mixtures of these fractions and polydisperse fractions. The results obviously show that there is no self-similar fracture behavior in the case of glass beads, quartz and silicon carbide. Statements on the self-similarity of limestone are much more difficult: Only some of the investigated limestone fractions show a similar clear, non-self-similar behavior. Self-similar curves appear particularly for fine monodisperse fractions as well as bimodal mixtures, which stressed with pressures above 200 MPa. Considering the measurement accuracy of particle size analysis the coincidence of the curves can be explained by the fact that progress in comminution almost ends above 200 MPa. At this point, a hydrostatic stress state is reached in the particle bed which is known from the literature. This stress state inhibits further fractures. Overall, it has been verified for the investigated materials that there?s no self-similar fracture behavior in particle bed comminution. One reason for the diverse opinions in literature is that there are three types of particles after the comminution in the particle bed: ? Particles which are stressed below their breaking point, ? Particles which are stressed right up to the break point, and ? Particles which are stressed beyond their breaking point.

"Gravity and X-ray luminescent separation methods are generally used in processing of diamond ores. X-ray luminescent separators are applied for separation of diamonds from feed ore size fractions from 100 to 10-15 mm size and for final treatment of gravity concentrates over 1 mm size. Gravity separation machines used for diamond ores separation are heavy medium cyclones and pneumatic jigs. One of the most important parameters, to a large extent affecting diamonds recovery from ore, as well as processing costs and specific energy costs, is size of dumped final tailings. That was exactly the purpose of the studies, the results of which are described in this paper. The studies performed on different ores showed that in order to achieve high recovery results, it is necessary to dump heavy medium separation tailings below 3 mm size. Separation of final tailings of -6+1 mm size by jigging is also possible. However, with a view to exclude extra diamond losses, it is necessary to maintain jigging concentrate yield approximately at 25% from starting feed, with its subsequent cleaning in heavy medium cyclones. In addition to that, it is necessary to separate 20-25% of middling with diamonds content at feed ore level and subject it to grinding. This will complicate flow sheet, but reduce load on heavy medium cyclones. In order to develop optimal flow sheet for gravity concentration of a specific diamond ore, large-scale investigations are required, including technical-and-economic assessment of separation alternatives. INTRODUCTION In processing of diamond ores, gravity and X-ray luminescent separation methods are generally used. It is common practice to apply X-ray luminescent separators for separation of diamonds from feed ore size fractions from 50 (100) to 20 (10) mm size and for final treatment of gravity concentrates over 1 mm size. With that, X-ray luminescent separation tailings larger than 3-6 mm size are reground and delivered to gravity concentration processing stage. Middling products circulation volumes are large, not infrequently necessitating decrease in concentrating plants capacity, especially with mining in deep workings of deposits, where ore strength is higher (Goryachev, 2010; Vaginov, 2000; William, 1988). Diamond ores preparation before processing is accomplished by means of roll-screw crushers and autogenous grinding mills, minimizing probability of free diamonds damage in liberation from barren rock. In re-crushing of size fractions that are “difficult” in autogenous grinding, high pressure grinding rollers are applied (Burchardt, 2014; Fedotov, 2011a, 2006b)."

"Release analysis is independent of collector and frother dosage and type, but it is primarily influenced by the degree of liberation or “state of release of the sample”. The shape of release curve is an indication of the degree of liberation. This paper briefs about the effect of reagent combination, particle size and surface characteristics on the release analysis of difficult-to-clean LVC coal.Release analysis of three LVC coal fines obtained from two different coalfields of India was carried out at three different size levels such as -0.5mm, (-0.5+0.1) mm, and -0.1mm. The collectors used were n-dodecane and commercial diesel oil. Incomplete liberation of coal fines even at a size of -100µm, corroborated by photomicrographs of ROM and clean coal macerals, in a great measure reduced the flotation-based cleaning potential of the fines. FESEM images of fines reveals that the adherence of ultrafine onto the surface of relatively coarser particles reduced the clean coal recovery. The results obtained also appear to be coal, reagent combination and, particle size and particle surface specific. Only one coal indicated the liberation as is usually expected for -0.1mm particles with a reasonable yield of 65% at 18% ash. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation has a long history of being used to treat coal fines. Coal flotation is considered to be difficult, if the percentage of Near Gravity Material (NGM), i.e. essentially locked particles, in flotation feed is >10% [Aplan, 1993], which is usually the case with all the coking coal fines in India. The fines are rich in vitrinite, so valuable for coking coal. Unfortunately, there appears to be no standard procedures to determine the separation efficiency of froth floatation. Release analysis proposed by C.C. Dell in 1953 [Dell, 1953], aimed to determine the ultimate floatability of coal. Several other techniques had been proposed but release analysis technique has been considered to be a vast improvement over the batch flotation process [Forrest et al. 1994]."

Today, most requests for quotations force all bidders to follow the bid document to the letter. The choice is then made based on price since it is the only difference in technically identical offers. However, clients allow and even encourage suppliers to come up with alternatives. Overall economy again, is much more than low investment costs. Operation costs may affect the economy of a project far more than a million saved in investment. There is almost always the choice: Should we go for the cheapest solution or should we go for the most economical solution? We strongly recommend the study of the long-term effects on investments as they often surpass any apparent savings in capital expenditure. With high operating costs, time is never on our side. Almost all relevant inputs and outputs in a concentrator have a value that can be expressed in a suitable currency. Unit prices may differ substantially from one operation to the other, but everything has a price tag and globalization has made it possible to move both goods and services to almost any place in the world. Even a rather simple exercise can give a good indication on which process improvements are worth pursuing when investing in new systems or equipment. The ones that do not qualify, as money earners, will naturally appear as clearly. No ?rocket science? is required, just process knowledge, practical experience, an open mind and some common sense and the reward may be the difference of having a good or an excellent project. The model we have developed can be made as detailed as required, but we do not recommend too much detail, as it sometimes tends to distract work and obscure the important issues. Two different process solutions compared in a simplified example illustrate the importance of evaluating a project based on its long-term effects rather than focusing on the investment costs only.
