"The purpose of grinding circuits is to produce a particle size distribution that has as much as possible the wanted particle size class. In practise, however, the production of the wanted size class is not at all as simple as it sounds. In the case of industrial minerals for example the end user may give very tight specifications for the particle size distribution and for the chemical composition of the product. This leads in many cases to a very demanding grinding process, if we want to reach and maintain these specifications. In other words, the required size distribution is not necessary the best possible for the chemical composition.Screen models aim to predict the size distribution and flow of the products when a feed size distribution, feed tonnage, and grade efficiency curve are known. The approach used in this study was to select the most suitable empirical model for classification. Suitability of the existing models has been evaluated and accuracy compared. The tests showed that best grade efficiency model was the Rosin-Rammler model.The performance of a screen was evaluated in order to minimize the amount of fine material in the screen overflow. The experiments were carried out using Derrick single-deck screen, first alone with recycling and then in the closed circuit with a rod mill using two different scales. The separate screen tests showed the expected behaviour of the grade efficiency curves. In the pilot tests the Leonard screen efficiencies stayed almost constant. This suggests that the screen works better in a milling circuit. However the loading of the screen turned the product of the mill coarser that helped screening. The grade efficiencies obtained from the pilot tests had the same general shape. The regression analysis of the pilot test runs did not give an acceptable correlation for the parameters. This suggests that pilot tests cannot be directly used to scale or to optimise industrial milling circuits. However they can be used to predict the trends of behaviour of an industrial circuit."

"With continuous mining industry development and dressing plant scale expansion, flotation cell is developed towards to large scale and intelligence. Based on flotation cell scale-up theory and industrial practice, KYF-320 air-forced mechanical flotation cell with effective volume of 320m3 was successfully developed by Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (BGRIMM) and adopted by China Gold Inner Mongolia Mining Co., Ltd, Luming project of China Railway Resource Group Co., Ltd, and Toromocho project of Chinalco in Peru. In this paper, the structure and technical characteristics of KYF-320 flotation cell are introduced, and the application of that equipment in China Gold Inner Mongolia Mining Co., LTD is demonstrated. The tank of KYF-320 flotation cell is cylinder-shaped, 8200mm in diameter and 7500mm high, with double froth lauders and large inclined angle cone bottom. 16 sets of KYF-320 flotation cells of which the processing capacity is 26,000,000 tons/a, are used in the second phase project of China Gold Inner Mongolia Mining Co., LTD. Their stable running shows the long life of impeller and stator and the power intensity (power consumption divided by effective volume of flotation cell) of KYF-320 flotation cell is only 0.73kW/m3 which is significantly less than that of small scale flotation cells. The industrial production obtains good results that the Cu grade of final concentrate of entire flotation circuit is 22.90% at the recovery of 86.73%, when Cu grade of feed is 0.35%, which indicates that KYF-320 flotation cell has good performance and can be widely used in large scale mine."

"The goal of the work was verification of bacterial leaching on the samples of black coal. From the results obtained it was clear that the coal is very well leached by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and this technology can be used for coal desulphurization. A leaching time of one month is required, to remove 65% of total sulphur and 85% of pyritic sulphur.Microscopic evaluation of samples from Jaworzno showed, that it should be classed as a coal with low coalification, probably from black coal hemiphase. Macerals of the liptinite group were well distinguishable; they were of a dark brown colour. Evidence of coal mass oxidation was apparent on the fresh sample; in the test samples (during bacterial leaching) small grains were oxidised."

Environmental concerns are pushing for continued reductions in SO2 emissions and hydrometallurgical technologies. The high prices for PGM.s are driving major expansions and a focus on minerals processing recoveries and, to a lesser extent, reductions in the refining metal lockup.In nickel, HPAL operations on laterites have failed economically but Inco is still pursuing some alternatives. BHP-Billiton and others are developing bioleaching alternatives for nickel laterites and sulphides.Copper continues to be dominated by the hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical debate; new hydrometallurgical developments are being tested at several sites whilst the pyrometallurgists continue to make competitive cost and environmental improvements.Gold processing developments are dominated by the use of improved gravity recovery equipment and by the development of thiosulphate as a more environmentally acceptable lixiviant.PGM processing trends are the use of fine grinding technologies, higher power input flotation cells, and new pyrometallurgical technologies. Hydrometallurgical options for some applications are being sought.OVERVIEW The metals industry has remained under price pressure for some time; low and decreasing real prices for most metals have become an expected scenario. Occasional price spikes give some relief but invariably bring expansions and new entrants into an already oversupplied commodity market, thus leading to the continued price pressure. Technical innovation, economies of scale, and improved work systems are continually sought, so as to improve the competitive position of each individual company in such a climate; however, these developments add to the downward price pressure. In such a situation the application of scarce funds to research and development is a difficult task. Excess funding is not available in tight economic times and yet the main route to higher profits is clearly the application of technical developments to lower the cost of producing a metal commodity. Many technical centers have closed as a cost saving exercise and some have coalesced to obtain economies of scale. The Australian based AMIRA research organisation has grown to serve the R&D part of the market well in Australia and in South Africa by acting as the catalyst to form research partnerships between a number of industry players and as an administrator to direct the funding of research projects towards the various applicable research institutions. AMIRA has developed closer ties to Camiro (Canadian Mining Research Organisation) through the appointment of Camiro.s metallurgical processing research director as AMIRA.s North American based director. AMIRA is continuing discussions with MIRO (Minerals Industry Research Organisation) in regard to a merger, with a report outlining the merger proposal expected in March of 2003. Company focused research centers continue to be effective at Anglo American Research Labs, Teck-Cominco Research, Falconbridge Research center, Inco Research and some others."

Because of the extremely low utilization of strain energy in the breakage of solid particles, the energy efficiency prevalent in comminution technology is extremely poor. Schoenert considered that single-particle comminution under slow compression is the most energy-efficient mode of comminution and that energy efficiency should be compared to that. The usual method for grinding minerals and cement has been the ball mill, in which the hit-and-miss aspect of loose-bed comminution severely reduces energy efficiency. The fine grinding of minerals is a particularly energy-intensive process. Schoenert showed that the energy consumed in the comminution of particles in confined beds is second only to that of single-particle comminution under slow compression and developed the method of conducting particle-bed comminution continuously in a high-pressure roll mill. Since its first industrial installation in 1985, the high-pressure roll mill has established itself as the comminution device of choice for significantly improving the productivity and energy efficiency of size reduction from coarse size feeds down to products finer than 20 microns. The first of several hundred installations were in cement plants. The preliminary design and optimization of the industrial operation of high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) systems, owing to the continuous nature of the device, cannot be efficiently done through laboratory experiments and needs to be achieved through proper system modeling. While the energetics of size reduction in high-pressure grinding rolls has been modeled very well, no model exists for the macroscopic variables in HPGR comminution. In high-pressure roll mill grinding, size reduction results from confined particle-bed comminution under compressive stresses such that the daughter particles produced are highly fractured, stressed, or otherwise weakened. This paper attempts to relate the comminution / compaction behavior for confined particle-bed under compression in a piston-die press with the macroscopic variables in HPGR comminution. A model describing the pressure-densification relationship is presented and used to accurately simulate the macroscopic variables in high-pressure grinding rolls, utilizing experimental data for particle-bed comminution with the piston-die press. The accuracy of the predictive simulations strongly suggests that, starting with a few batch-mode laboratory-scale experiments, it should be possible not only to identify the optimal operating conditions for existing operations but also to successfully design new industrial high- pressure grinding roll systems.

"Particle-bed compressive stressing is the main work mechanism of comminution by high pressure grinding rolls(HPGR). An experimental study on comminution and mineral liberation of two copper sulfide ores was carried out using a piston-die compressive stressing rig to simulate the situation of comminution with HPGR as the final-grinding device. The tests carried out include compressive comminution tests on particle-bed with narrow-size feed, and the locked-cycle comminution test on particle-bed with broad-size feed, which was then compared to a corresponding locked-cycle test of ball-mill grinding. The narrow-size feed is made up of particles in the size range 2.36~3.35 mm, whereas the broad-size feed of particles in the size range 0~3.35 mm. The liberation analysis for copper-mineral in the comminution products was accomplished using BPMA system – an automatic mineral liberation analyzer developed by BGRIMM. The influences of the stressing intensity and the method of comminution on the copper mineral liberation are discussed in terms of product size distribution, copper-metal deportation among size fractions, distribution of copper mineral among particle-size and particle-grade classes, degree of mineral liberation in size class as well as degree of mineral liberation overall.INTRODUCTION Traditionally, comminution process commonly applied in mineral processing is a flowsheet consisting of crushing of crude ore with conventional crushers, followed by grinding of the crushed ore in tumbling mills. In last decades, the energy-efficient HPGR (high-pressure grinding rolls) has found its application in mineral processing, mostly as tertiary or quaternary crusher to generate a fine-crushed product either as feed to subsequent grinding or as feed to a pre-beneficiation process before further grinding. Compared with the process of conventional crushing followed by grinding in ball mill, this mode of HPGR-application can achieve energy saving to some extent by reducing particle size of the feed to ball milling, and by reducing amount of the feed to ball milling if a significant portion of tailings in relatively coarse particle-size range can be discarded at the pre-beneficiation stage. In recent years, the approaches of letting HPGR take more comminution work from ball mill by applying it in semi-finish grinding mode or even finish grinding mode have been discussed (Burchardt, 2014). Although HPGR finish-grinding has been successfully applied in the cement industry for grinding of cement clinker and raw materials, this mode of HPGR application has yet rarely been implemented in mineral processing, despite the advantage of more energy-saving and other potential benefits such as preferential breakage, internal damage of particles and enhanced mineral liberation which may lead to a better downstream processing performance. The reasons for the retardation of the progress of this kind of HPGR-application in the mineral industry lies not only in that a finish-grinding with HPGR has to be operated in dry condition whereas most of ore-beneficiation processes like flotation are operated in wet condition, but also in that there are large variety of ore materials with various complexity of processing technology, which need to be addressed on a case-by-case basis with a lot of test work, in order to evaluate the potential advantages or disadvantages of this application."

Due to the shortage of fresh water in the Middle East, seawater has been used as an alternative in flotation beneficiation. The flotation process requires about 7 m3 of water/mt ore. This article aims to study the effect of seawater cations and anions on the flotation. Natural pure francolite, calcite, dolomite and quartz were characterized by chemical, thermal and x-ray diffraction analyses, surface area, solubility and zeta potential. Synthetic seawater was prepared with the major chemical composition similar to natural seawater as follow; 2.45% NaCl, 0.52% MgCl2, 0.41% Na2SO4, 0.116% CaCl2 and 0.07% KCl. Also, natural seawater was used in application. The point zero of charge was estimated at pH 6.5, 7.8, 9.2 and 2.2 for francolite, calcite, dolomite and quartz, respectively. Calcium ions were released from the three minerals with Mg2+ and P2O5 3– released from dolomite and phosphate, respectively. The adsorption of collector, zeta-potential and floatability of pure minerals were studied. The effect of individual cations and anions predominant in seawater are studied on individual mineral or group. The troublesome Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions should be controlled by soda ash addition. Sodium silicate improved the selectivity of mineral mixtures and natural ore. At optimum conditions the calcareous phosphate ore yielded a concentrate of 34% P2O5, at 83% recovery with 0.61% MgO, from an ore assaying 25.3% P2O5 and 9.4% MgO. To minimize the Clcontent, fresh water of about 0.5 m3 /t was used and the Cl- decreased to about 0.09 %

Efficient enrichment of high-carbon low-grade mica stone coal containing vanadium is a key problem in the mineral processing field, and the mature beneficiation process is yet to be developed and applied. In this paper, a special mineral mica type of stone coal containing vanadium from Tongshan, Hubei Province, China was selected as the research object. Chemical analysis results show that this mineral contains V2O5 0.71%, SiO2 49.28%, C 13.44%, and CaO 6.26%. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that vanadium generally exists in all kinds of mica minerals in 20 µm to 50 µm fractions. Mica stone coal containing vanadium must be ground to a particular fineness (approximately 45 µm). To reduce acid consumption during vanadium extraction from stone coal through acid leaching, a pretreatment process was proposed to enrich micas by using shaking table and flotation methods. A new combined technology process was implemented, resulting in a 0.96% improvement in the vanadium grade of raw materials in the succeeding process. Vanadium losses were controlled to 4.57% through the pre-concentration process, which reduced the burden of the subsequent procedure. The content of high acid consuming minerals was also diminished, such that approximately 6612 CNY was saved from producing 1 t V2O5. Therefore, stone coal containing vanadium should be pre-concentrated by using an appropriate combined process to reduce costs.

Coal Water Mixtures (CWMs) are densed suspensions of coal particles in water. Viscosity is one of the most important rheological properties of CWMs and it is desired to be as low as possible. The slurry viscosity was influenced significantly by additive formation, the particle size distribution and the ash content of the coal. However, the influence of dispersants is most obvious. At present, there are several kinds of dispersants such as polymeric styrene sulfuric sodium, lignin sulfonate, humate, polycarboxy salt, ethylene epoxide surfactant. In this paper, a newly synthesized CWM dispersant has been reported, which is an efficient anionic surfactants of polycarboxylic acid type. The synthesis process includes three steps. At the beginning, the polyglycol acetate ester has been performed by acetic acid and polyethylene glycol (PEO) on the condition of acetic-acid/PEO ratio 1:1.1, at 368~373K for 30 minutes. Then the macro-monomer is prepared through the esterification of 85.71% acrylic and 14.29% polyglycol acetate ester, at 368~373K for 10 minutes. After that, the polycarboxylic acid CWM dispersant is polymerized using proper proportion macro-monomer, acrylic (AA) and sulfonic styrol sodium, at 368~373K for 1 hour. This new dispersants are used in the coal water mixtures formulation. Four kinds of coal used in the experiment are Shuang Yashan, Tunliu, Luning, Changcun samples. ? The highest concentration for shuanyashan coal is 70% when the dosage of dispersant is 0.4%, and the content of -200 meshes particles is 75.53%. As the dosage of dispersant de-creases to 0.25%, the Shangyashan CWM concentration is 67%. ? For Tunliu coal CWM concentrations are in the range of 76% to 75% when dosage of the dispersant changes from 0.4% to 0.25% at the same particle size distribution of 83.5% minus 200 meshes. ? The highest concentration for Luning coal is 69% when dosage of the dispersant is 0.4%, and the content of -200 meshes particles is 88.86%. ? For Changcun sample, the coal concentration of CWM is 73%~75% when dosage range of the dispersant is 0.35%~0.5%. The experiments show that the synthesied dispersant is quite promising for some coals CWM preparation, but a little bit coal-dependent. The Proximate and Ultimate analysis, surface characteristic measurement have been made to investigate the interactions between coal and additives.

Mechanically-induced chemical reactions between natural beach ilmenite (FeTiO3) and silicon (Si) have been examined by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) analyses. The effect of various milling time on the phase transformation, crystallite size, and lattice strain of a beach sand ilmenite with silicon, and on their leaching behavior in hydrochloric acid (HCl) has been investigated. For mechanically activated FeTiO3, the crystallite size decreased and lattice strain increased monotonically with time of milling. However, the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenite with silicon showed a relatively smaller crystallite size and greater lattice strain compared with the mechanically activated ilmenite under the same milling condition. In accordance with the elapse of milling time, the intensity of both pure FeTiO3 and mechanically activated FeTiO3 gradually decreased. However, in case of the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenitereduction of FeTiO3 by silicon resulted in formation of rutile TiO2 at the milling time of 20 h and afterwards. Additional leaching experiments were carried out at an HCl/ilmenite (wt%) ratio of 20:1. The concentration of HCl was 3 M and the reaction temperature ranged from 70 to 90 oC. Mechanical activation was observed to significantly enhance the dissolution rates of both iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti) in HCl. Particularly, effects of both milling time and silicon addition on the dissolution rates of titanium and iron were significant, while those of temperature were relatively minor under the conditions investigated in this study. The cadmium and cyanide are main poisonous components in cyanide electroplating cadmium waste water of an electroplating plant in Shenyang. The content of cadmium is about 26 mg/L and the content of cyanide is about 11.782 mg/L in this waste water. The main form of cadmium and cyanide are ions which are Cd2+and CN?. Because the cadmium and cyanide exceeded the standard seriously, the waste water must be disposed before it discharges. The microbiological method of treating heavy metals in wastewater has many advantages. For example, it has a fast adsorption velocity, high processing efficiency, wide range of pH and temperature, few invest, low running cost, no the second pollution and so on. At the same time, the CN? could be degradated by some microbiology. The physical nature, the chemical nature of Bacillus mucilaginosus, the adsorbing condition and adsorbing regular of Bacillus mucilaginosus to cadmium in the wastewater are studied by using Bacillus mucilaginosus as adsorbent removing cadmium from electroplating wastewater. The experimental results show that the adsorbing rate of cadmium is over 92%, under the room temperature(about 25?), stiring revolution in adsorption being 800 r/min for 30 min, pH being 5 , the bacteria being cultured after 5d with the biomass of Bacillus mucilaginosus 40g/L (wet weight). The mechanism in biosorption process of Bacillus mucilaginosus to cadmium is analyzed and discussed by TEM , Zeta potential,and infrared spectroscopy analysis. The results showed, the chemical involving is main adsorbing form, while electrostatic attraction, ions exchange, hydrogen bonding and Van Der Waals force are concerned cooperatively. ?NH2 ?, ?C=O?, ?C=O?NH?CH2, ?CH3, ?OH are main adsorbing groups. At the same time, the floatablity of removing cyanide by Bacillus mucilaginosus is explored.

"Natural graphite exists mainly in three types of amorphous graphite, flakes graphite and lump graphite. Graphite from Bao Ha mine, Lao Cai province is with 11.8 carbon-graphite %, forms in flakes and dense crystals. The paper presents the comparison among enrichment of Bao Ha’s graphite by two types of froth flotation with 90 g/t kerosene oil as collector, 50 g/t montanol 800 as frother, in natural pH, and at 20 wt.% of solid. The differences among three flow charts indicated that using middling flotation and re-middling flotation for the cleaning tails and the scavenger concentrates, the final concentrate was improved and containing up to 94 carbon-graphite % of flakes graphite, up to 82 carbon-graphite % of fine graphite with 93.48 % total recovery, moreover, carbon-graphite in the final tail is 0.86 % with 6.52 % recovery. However, a refining mill and a classification stage were applied before doing the middling flotation stages.1. INTRODUCTIONGraphite (black lead or plumbago) is used in many industrial applications due to its high electrical and thermal conductivity, lubricity, and chemical inertness. High quality graphite can be used in metallurgy, molding, brake linings, batteries, and fuel cells. Graphite, composed exclusively of the element Carbon, is rather common mineral, but fine crystals are rare. Graphite is soft (hardness: 0.5-1 Mohs scale); has a layered, planar structure; occurs in platy or acicular (occasionally) morphology (Minerals.net; Pierson, 1993).USGS (2017) reported, global consumption of natural graphite continuing increase in the period of 2012-2016. In 2016, China used up 35% while produced 66% of the world’s graphite. Graphite mining are being developed in Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia and Tanzania, but production reduced in Canada from 2015. Based on the statistic of Statista.com shows from 2011 to 2014 and a forecast to 2020, the global graphite demand is mostly in refractories, batteries, others, lubricant/crucible, foundry and pencil, and that is increase every year.Graphite Vietnam lies on the fault of the Red river from Yen Bai to Lao Cai, the reserves is estimated around 29.3 million ton and mostly in Lao Cai province where has Nam Thi graphite mine and Bao Ha graphite mine (MOIT, 2008). Vietnamese graphite products could reached to ~92% graphite carbon (Cg) (Tran Thi Hien et al., 2008). Studied samples was collected in Bao Ha graphite mine, is located in Lao Cai province. Graphite Bao Ha exists in two types as graphite flakes and amorphous (Hoang Thi Minh Thao et al., 2017)."

Media losses are a significant contributor to the operational cost in a dense media separation (DMS) circuit. Of these losses, up to 80 wt% can occur on the drain and rinse vibrating screens. Although these screens are an integral part of any DMS circuit, surprisingly little work can be found in open literature regarding the effect of aperture configuration on the drain rates (draining water and medium). To establish the effect of slot aperture size, experiments were conducted on a 0.6 x 1.2 m vibrating screen with polyurethane (PU) panels at slurry densities between 1.6 – 2.8 kg/L, and volumetric flow rates of 19 – 25 m3/h for both ferrosilicon and magnetite. Results showed that an increase in the volumetric flow rate led to an increase in drainage rate, moisture content and medium carryover. Once an optimum volumetric flow rate was exceeded, a further increase in flow rate resulted in a decrease in drainage rate with a sharp increase in moisture and medium bypass to the oversize stream. An increase in ferrosilicon slurry density led to a decrease in drainage rate with an increase in moisture and medium bypass with each of these rates increasing as the slurry density increased. For magnetite, a gradual decrease in drainage rate was observed with increase in slurry density and volumetric flowrate beyond the screen optimum point. It was found that an increase in aperture size from 0.63 x 8.8 mm to 0.8 x 8.8 mm to 1.0 x 13 mm resulted in an increase in ferrosilicon drainage rate of between 1.3 - 1.8 m3/m2/h depending on the flow rate and slurry density with a reduction in moisture and medium carryover of between 1.0 – 1.2 % and 14.1 – 20.2 kg/t/m respectively. For magnetite, the drainage rate increased between 1.0 - 1.4 m3/m2/h as the slot width increased from 0.63 x 8.8 mm to 0.8 x 8.8 mm while an increase in slot length from 0.63 x 8.8 to 0.63 x 12 mm only resulted in an increase in drainage rate of 0.1 - 0.5 m3/m2/h.

The study involved two projects that will produce copper concentrate and may have their operations integrated. Transport by trucks, conveyor belt, and the equipment called RopeCon were evaluated as options for the ore transport between the sites. A rainforest stretch, that Vale S.A. demands to preserve, is situated between the projects. It was suggested to further review RopeCon because it presents minimal interactions with the environment. To design the preliminary system layout, a research was done on the rainforest cover height data, but the information found was scarce and imprecise. For preserving the local forest, the use of this data would conduct to the oversizing of RopeCon towers and, consequently, overestimation of its costs. For the acquisition of reliable information, a method was developed using local data acquired through airborne laser survey. The volume between the digital surface and terrain models was calculated to generate a surface representing the forest cover height. It was revealed, by plotting the points obtained from this surface, that 85% of the vegetation is below 25 m. This height is suggested to review the preliminary project with a more accurate design of the equipment towers, thus reducing its costs estimates. The method permits the precise location of the large trees, making easier to find a pathway, for linear-shaped facilities, that would minimize the creation of vegetation-free zones as a measure to protect equipments against falling trees and forest fires. "Process mineralogy’ is a form of applied mineralogy which focuses on addressing problems associated with the processing of ores. ‘Mineralogy’ is the scientific study of minerals and ‘mineral processing’ is the production of concentrates from ores. ‘Process mineralogy,’ however can be defined as the practical study of minerals associated with the processing of ores, concentrates and smelter products for the development and optimisation of metallurgical flowsheets, including the waste and environmental management considerations. This hybrid discipline consists of teams that include geologists, mineralogists, samplers, mineral processors and often others, working together. The degree of cross-training, communication and trust dictates the potential capacity of the team and where an appropriate work dynamic is fostered, in which relationships flourish as much as does the ethic of technical excellence, it is possible to develop technical capabilities that surpass those of conventional teams. The world’s demand for metals is ever increasing and ore deposits available for extraction and processing are lower grade and more complex, often containing deleterious elements that require tailored treatment. Generally, in the past, the technical challenges only needed to be overcome and assessed economically to make an ore deposit viable; increasingly and in the future, a more sustainable approach including environmental and societal considerations is needed. Process mineralogical assessment is increasingly providing the critical information that stands between failure or collapse and survival or success of some mining operations. In this paper, selected case studies are used to demonstrate the valuable role of the process mineralogy tools being used to provide the platform for innovative technology development. Their common attributes are discussed and distilled, thus providing some insights and potential guidance for addressing some of the likely future challenges of the mining industry."

"The research is aimed at solving the processing of waste products of titanium-magnesium production. The aim of the research is to extract synthetic carnallite and industrial products enriched with niobium from waste products of titanium-magnesium production. Analysis of the current state of the titanium and magnesium production in the Republic of Kazakhstan shows the availability of significant amounts of chloride wastes containing valuable components. Magnesium and potassium with an average content of 50-60 % potassium chlorides, 25-30 % magnesium chlorides are lost in the wastes of the titanium and magnesium production. Ust-Kamenogorsk Titanium Magnesium Plant JSC (UKTMP) currently imports carnallite that is a KCl-MgCl2X6H2O binary salt at quite high prices. Chloride wastes of titanium production, sublimates of dust chambers of a titanium chlorinator, sludge of a magnesium electrolytic unit and sludge of a carnallite chlorinator has been chosen as the targets of our research. The analysis of niobium distribution within any solid waste of a titanium slag chlorination process in UKTMP JSC showed that the highest content of niobium is in the sublimates of dust chambers of a titanium chlorinator in the ranges from 0.26 to 1.0 %. Among the niobium extraction technologies considered, the known method of its extraction from the chloride waste is leaching with weak solutions of mineral acids or alkalis in order to convert the chloride salts into the solution to be used for synthetic carnallite extraction. Besides niobium, other impurity components are transferred to the cake and shall be separated from the base metals. The effective method for this is the chlorination process enabling niobium transfer into the sublimates in the form of chlorides and thus separating it from the majority of the impurities. The condensed niobium chlorides are hydrolyzed transferring it into sediments in the form of oxide. New ways of processing waste products of titanium-magnesium production with the receipt of marketable products are relevant in the development of processing of mineral raw materials."

"Two areas are involved in the research work of the comminution process (crushing and grinding). The first one involves the changes of the size class distribution values that are definded by the differential equations in the function of the ore property and working conditions. The second area involves the comminution of the different levels in order to optimize the working parameters and to decrease the operational costs in the grinding process.We have studied, in detail, the possibility of functioning the crusher at the maximal loading, over 4500 kN, ball mills with diameters larger than 5.0 m and semiautogenous mills with diameters larger than 10.0 m.Using the computers, we have achieved the maximal loading range of the crusher, over Fc ? 4500 kN in the crushing process. In the grinding process, using the adequate differential equations in the automation process, we have established the correlation between the pulp mass capacity in the mill, pulp dencity, ore fineness in the pulp and recirculating ore charge.With the appopriate text, equations and graphs, this paper shows the results of our several years research work in the laboratory and in the ore comminution plant of Majdanpek Copper Mine."

"The JKMRC researchers have been redeveloping the suite of breakage testing techniques to more realistically align with the breakage environment in comminution equipment. Computational modelling, especially with the DEM, has highlighted the modes of impact and contact, along with the energies of these interactions in a wide range of equipment. This has driven the need to match these modes in laboratory ore characterisation tests. The objective has been to build a continuum of breakage tests and associated models that span the required range of breakage forces and environments. The ore sample is subjected to a sequence of tests covering: abrasion (surface breakage) of angular through to smoothed particles; single particle impact from high energy single impact breakage down to low energy; incremental breakage covering 60 mm down to 50 µm particles; particle strength distribution; and bed breakage over a range of compression and energy input. These tests are suited to multi-component ores with a distribution of strengths. A modelling technique is also being developed to utilise primary breakage for modelling breakage under different types of confinement. This paper draws together these techniques, previously published by the authors, into a coherent whole. The suite of tests is approaching the point where a fixed set of tests can be used to model the performance of a full range of equipment, removing the need to conduct repeat ore characterisation tests for each different piece of equipment incorporated in a circuit design. This path should open up the application of different circuit configurations and novel equipment in comminution circuit design.1 INTRODUCTION Comminution modelling utilizes a wide range of ore characterisation techniques and methods to deal with the range of comminution equipment available for production use. In general, the tests have been designed to correlate with specific pieces of equipment, using calibration factors to provide the link between the small-scale test and industrial-scale performance. The majority of tests focus on estimating the power requirement of process equipment to achieve a desired throughput and grind size. Overall, this approach has achieved acceptable outcomes in the past, but the reality is that equipment sizing suffers from considerable uncertainty, in excess of ±20% is not uncommon. This uncertainty is covered by safety margins and automatic scaling factors in equipment selection. In striving to improve reliability, the industry tends to add more adjustment factors to the tests, and design margin rather than question the basic validity of the testing process. As the tests are often correlated to production equipment via carefully guarded databases, they are also locked into historic operating inefficiency, not providing direction or revealing opportunities to improve production efficiency in comminution equipment or circuits. Safe in the knowledge that they are achieving the expected production based on test work predictions, a site is unlikely to set their sights on reducing specific energy consumption by 10%."

With the general trend across all commodities towards the treatment of lower grade ores, it is becoming increasingly important to develop efficient protocols for comprehensive mineralogical characterisation to allow the development of the most appropriate strategies for processing an ore. In the case of silver, there are more than 200 known silver bearing minerals which can make it challenging to identify them. Knowledge of the deportment of silver within an ore is one of the factors used to determine an appropriate processing strategy. Automated SEM-based tools are commonly used for mineralogical characterisation but the low-grade together with the large number of minerals that are potential hosts for silver means that often, complementary analytical tools must be used in order to properly account for the silver. The work presented in this paper is a demonstration of the approach that should be taken when identifying the deportment of silver in complex ores. Three complex, low-grade silver ores were characterised using the approach. The insights from the mineralogical characterisation were then used to inform the metallurgical testing that was undertaken. The results from the batch flotation testing clearly demonstrate the importance of understanding the mineralogy in order to select the most appropriate metallurgical processes.
