"The paper presents a analysis of the history and the trends of development of flotation apparatus. The laws of their evolution are stated and the place and role of column flotation are indicated. It is demonstrate development and different design of column apparatus. The major parameters of column cell such as diameter and height are discussed. Options are proposed on optimization of hydrodynamic characteristics of columns with large-capacity cells. High efficiency of columns with cell height of 4-6 m is shown on examples of coal preparation. A new generation of multi sectional column cells has been developed. In the cells are zones with different aerohydrodynamic parameters: combined in the machine are co-and counter- counter flows of phases. The transition from single-chamber column to multi-sectional apparatus makes it possible to create favourable hydrodynamic and aeration regimes in each section of the column dependent on the pattern of material distribution by floatability. Efficiency of application different designs column apparatus uses shown on the example of enrichment of various non-ferrous metals ores and coal. The principles of mathematical simulation of the flotation process are developed. A scaling-up procedure for column cells was based on flotation macro- and micro- dynamics simulation.INTRODUCTIONColumn flotation is considered to be one of the most significant achievement in the field of mineral processing in the end of last century. We cannot but agree with this statement but would like to understand what underlies this success. History of the flotation column can not be considered in isolation from the development of flotation apparatus on the whole. It can be argued that the first attempt to switch from oil flotation to the use of bubbles during flotation was performed Bessel brothers in 1877 (Berlin patent 42 class 22, July 2) and in 1886 (Berlin patent 39,369 May 12). According to these patents, the crushed ore was mixed with oils , hydrocarbons and water. Then the pulp received in this way was heated up to boiling . Air bubbles and steam formed during boiling facilitate the flotation of ore particles coated with oil (first patent) or bubbles been generated by the reaction of lime with acid (second patent). The evolution in the design of the flotation apparatus incorporates the following key stages. Further development is connected with the Francis Elmore’s idea to use gas bubbles received at water electrolysis (UK, 13578; 1904). This method was not introduced then, but much later, in our time and on the essentially new technical basis it found a use for sewage treatment (electroflotation). Gas bubbling under vacuum patented also by Elmore (UK, 17816; 1904) obtained a practical use. It should be noted that the method did not lose its importance till now. The design of the camera has been surely optimized (Glembotskii etal, 1963). A year later A. Macquisten (UK, 26712) developed pressure (compression) flotation. Thus, the H.Sulman, H.Picard, D. Bell’s (US, 853120, May 29, 1905) basic patent and the adjoining T. Goover’s patent 1910 (US, 953746) formed the basis of the first and most important element of modern flotation: flotation with air bubbles sucked in from the environment. In 1914, J.Callow received a patent for on an apparatus where air was sparged through the porous false bottom of the cell ( US, 1104755). Woolen fabric folded four times was fixed on a perforated metal frame to be used for air sparging (Gaudin, 1932). The following year Durrel created the prototype of the injection (ejector) apparatus. The jet aerator made it possible to significantly reduce the size of the bubbles, in comparison with the filter cloth. An apparatus with slurry pre-aeration in an airlift prior to feeding into separation cell was developed Wagner in 1917 (US, 1235083). And finally, the first column apparatus with a counter-current of slurry and air was developed by M. Towne and S. Flynn in 1919(US, 1,295,817). ("

Maturing populations create an increase in the demand for the type of non-ferrous metals, which are used in the manufacturing of electronic products. The depletion of existing high-grade deposits, make it necessary to boost the efficiency of beneficiation processes and most importantly the yield (recovery rate of the value commodities). Increasing demand now makes it worthwhile to tap into resources, which were previously considered waste, for example secondary deposits such as tailing ponds and electronic waste. In order to achieve increased yields, increasingly finer, or even ultra-fine fractions have to be treated. In most cases, mineral characteristics such as size and density call for non-mechanical, high-capacity technologies to be used. There are various technologies that allow for the separation of fines and ultra-fines. This paper outlines the dynamics and efficiency of pneumatic flotation with emphasis on its application to the recovery of non-ferrous metals, from electronic waste. The conventional agitator flotation technology of an electronic waste processing plant was not able to recover ultra-fine non-ferrous metals satisfactorily, due to losses within the tailings. Because of its adaptability and its inherent suitability for non-ferrous metals, pneumatic flotation has been incorporated to the existing process achieving excellent results. The merit of the process lies in the state of the art technology, which does not utilize compressed air and any rotating parts, which results in a reduction in wear and energy requirement, both features of this innovative technology. In addition, the use of pneumatic flotation resulted in a significant reduction in residence time, when compared to mechanical flotation. Pneumatic technology is able to influence air bubble size in a flotation cell, by changing the speed and pressure of the slurry stream. Higher slurry velocities lead to the formation of smaller air bubbles, which is required for the successful flotation of ultra-fine particles. Conversely, decreasing the slurry velocity leads to bigger air bubbles. The optimum bubble size can be created according to different feed characteristics. This is important in case of feed fluctuations.

"The aim of this study is to solve the problem of tungsten leaching from scheelite concentrate using sodium hydroxide in the presence of phosphate by an autoclaving process, which is one of main development techniques for tungsten recovery. To understand the applicability and leaching performance of tungsten leaching from scheelite concentrate, the main work is to investigate the effects of leaching parameters such as initial concentrations of NaOH and Na3PO4, reaction temperature, stirring speed, liquid-to-solid ratio and reaction time on WO3 dissolution rate to obtain the optimal leaching conditions. The chemical composition and phase composition of the samples were evaluated by means of XRF and XRD. The content of WO3 in the leaching residue obtained via washing, filtering and drying was analyzed by thiocyanate spectrometric method. The optimal leaching conditions were found to be NaOH concentration of 6.76 mol·L-1, Na3PO4 concentration of 1.35 mol·L-1, reaction temperature of 180°C, stirring speed of 400 rpm, liquid-to-solid ratio of 2.0 and reaction time of 90 min. The results showed that tungsten leaching rate of 99.20% was reached under the optimal conditions. The technology exhibited superior leaching performance, which not only reduced the consumption of sodium hydroxide but also greatly decreased reaction time in comparison to a conventional autoclaving process. The chief raw materials for the production of tungsten in nature are wolframite and scheelite [4, 5]. Among them, approximately two-thirds of the tungsten reserves contain scheelite deposits in the world [6, 7]. With the progressive exhaustion of high-quality wolframite resources, scheelite has become a predominant primary resource for the production of tungsten [8, 9]."

The research is aimed at involving in the processing of poor platinummetal natural and technogenic raw materials. The purpose of the research is the creation of a multifactorial complex of innovations in the system of ore preparation and separation cycles, which ensure a high efficiency of flotation enrichment of hard-to-treat raw materials. In the usual practice of enrichment, minerals of the platinum group (PGM) of less than 10 microns in size are the source of inevitable process losses. For poor raw materials, it is precisely thin PGMs that are characteristic, their proportion sometimes being almost 100%, and their opening leads to the formation of a large amount of slime, which adversely affects the efficiency of flotation. To reduce the yield of slimes and increase the selectivity degree of the opening of the PGM in the ore preparation cycle, a dry grinding scheme and pneumoclassification of the milling material has been developed to obtain fractions of different fineness, density and morphology of the particles. From 2 to 5-fold reduction in the yield of slurries for various ores has been achieved. The separation cycle successfully tested are: flotation of fractions in separate cycles with a differentiated choice of the reagent regime; preliminary selective flocculation of slime fraction material; use of a new generation of bioreagents for flocculation and flotation. A new approach to subsoil research is protected by a patent. The dependence of the efficiency of biocollectors on the composition of biomineral extract from the processed raw materials, which forms the basis of new reagents, is established. The possibility of obtaining the degree of extraction of PGM, native gold and sulphides from finely ground pre-fractionated poor ores with the use of biocollectors of at least 85% is proved. With conventional reagents, the extraction of PGM is 12-23% lower, with the use of traditional ore-preparation apparatuses, the PGM recovery rate was halved. Methods for the long-term storage and preparation in industrial conditions of biocollector reagents that do not require the purification of waste waters from them have been developed. The developed multifactorial system of intensification of flotation enrichment can be introduced to recovery PGM from tailings of enrichment of titanomagnetite, chromite and copper-nickel ores.

The quality of iron ore pellets, represented in terms of parameters such as cold compressive strength (CCS) and Tumble Index (TI), has a strongly influence on the productivity and energy of reduction furnaces like the blast furnace and on the quality of hot metal or liquid iron. The main objective of pelletization operations is to produce iron ore pellets of desirable specifications and ensure high levels of plant productivity and energy efficiency. Advanced process control of an industrial iron ore pellet induration process using a soft sensor for pellet quality and fuzzy-logic based control algorithm is described in this paper. The pellet quality soft sensor consists of a rigorous mathematical model of the induration process and a statistical model for the pellet quality parameters. The mathematical model is based on the fundamental principles of heat and mass transfer between gases and pellets, kinetics of drying and condensation of moisture, combustion of coke, calcination of limestone, and melting and solidification of pellets. The predictions of wind-box temperature profiles are in close agreement with the measured profiles. The time-temperature profiles of the pellets during induration, along with raw material characteristics and induration process operating conditions, are used as inputs to the quality model to predict cold compressive strength and the Tumble Index. The predictions of the quality soft sensor along with the rules based on fuzzy-logic derived from simulation results and operator experience are then utilized to control the induration process to achieve precise control of the quality parameters and to optimize the induration process in terms of fuel efficiency and productivity. The mathematical model is also utilized as a soft sensor for temperature, moisture and composition profiles of pellets and gases. Results of implementation of this model-based control strategy on an industrial scale induration process will be presented. "Introducing cutting-edge development work, which aims to simplify mineral processing flow-sheets, reduce costs and address environmental issues. Over the past four years Innovative Mineral Processing Technologies Pty. Ltd (IMPTEC) Australia have developed a Super-fine Crusher and a Planar Magnetic Separator which offer low cost, wet or dry alternatives to conventional grinding and conventional magnetic separation. Each of these machines has been successfully trialed at pilot scale and are now in the process of transitioning to commercial scale. This paper reports on the progress made in each of these fields. The potential scope for application of super-fine crushing technology as an alternative to grinding is potentially expansive and could include beneficiation of metalliferous ores, precious metal ore processing, hydrometallurgical processing, industrial minerals and coal processing, plastic fillers and ceramics processing as well as processing of cementitious slags and fly-ash. IMPTEC have recently achieved outstanding results at pilot scale with a dry combination of super-fine crushing and planar magnetic separation, which offers an alternative to the wet processing of magnetic iron ores. The dry combination has set new laboratory performance benchmarks when compared with the industry standard wet Davis Tube Tester. The test results have also established a strong evidence base showing that super-fine crushing achieves liberation of value minerals at coarser sizes when compared with grinding. The dry combination of super-fine crushing and planar magnetic separation also addresses environmental issues and completely eliminates grinding. An IMPTEC super-fine crusher is currently undergoing commercial trials, generating ultra-fine products from granulated lead blast furnace slag for use as cement substitutes. The performance of the super-fine crusher on this extreme duty highlights the potential benefits of super-fine crushing over the wide range of industries and applications where conventional grinding is employed.INTRODUCTION Present day mineral processing practices can become anchored in convention, where, inefficient methodologies are recognized and accepted as “best practice” or “industry standard”. Motivated by this challenge, IMPTEC has undertaken the development of radically different and improved methodologies in the fields of fine comminution and magnetic separation. Whilst, crushing is much less energy intensive and generally less capital and maintenance intensive than grinding, the technology has stalled due to the lack of crushing devices, which have the capacity to adapt to fine and ultra-fine duties. Grinding practice advances have been achieved through major increases in machine size and power. However, these advances are also accompanied by major escalations in capital, operating and maintenance costs. The economics of this strategy has become increasingly questionable. A typical example is the viability of low-grade magnetite beneficiation, which can hinge largely on the cost of grinding to fine and ultra-fine liberation sizes."

"In this work, we studied the mechanochemical activation of chalcopyrite by vertically stirred ball milling (VSBM) to enhance the dissolution of copper. By using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and laser diffraction particle size analysis, we investigated the effect of milling and milling conditions on particle size and phase composition of the chalcopyrite concentrate. To elucidate the efficiency of VSBM towards the mechanochemical activation of chalcopyrite, we also conducted leaching experiments in sulfuric acid-ferric sulfate media. Under all investigated milling conditions, the VSBM determined a dramatic decrease of particle size from over 100 µm of P80% up to about 13 µm. Furthermore, the XRD of the ground chalcopyrite specimens highlighted a partial oxidation of the mineral. In leaching, upon grinding by VSBM, the increase of copper extraction ranged from a minimum of +10% to a maximum of +40%, depending on the grinding conditions. In order to elucidate whether the dissolution enhancement was a consequence of the decreased particle size or of an induced mechanochemical reaction, we performed leaching experiments on activated and non-activated chalcopyrite sample having the same particle size. In addition, we determined the activation energy of leaching before and after vertically stirred ball milling. The leaching results on samples with the same particle size highlighted a greater copper extraction and higher dissolution rates upon mechanochemical activation. Whether performing grinding by VSBM or not, the leaching kinetics was found to be controlled by the chemical reaction on the surface of the chalcopyrite particle. By grinding the chalcopyrite concentrate by VSBM, the activation energy of leaching slightly decreased from 66 to 58 kJ/mol. INTRODUCTION Due to the increasing demand of copper, low grade ores and refractory minerals like chalcopyrite are expected to become the main copper source in the next years (Klauber, 2008). As a low-grade sulfide, chalcopyrite shall be processed hydrometallurgically. However, due to the formation of a protective layer of elemental sulfur during the oxidizing leaching, the dissolution of copper is slow and/or incomplete (De Bernardi and Carlesi, 2013). Therefore, the development of new technologies to enhance the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite is highly required."

Mining operations offer many opportunities for the use of IT and communication technologies to improve automation and thereby deliver higher levels of productivity, cost, quality and safety. In this paper, we discuss a particular application, namely, building a fully automated train control and operation system within a mining area. We first outline the basic architecture and functionality of such a system and then present a real-life case study where the railway system within a remote iron ore mine in Canada was converted to a fully automated train operation system. This hard real-time safety-critical system required the use of advanced technologies such as embedded systems (e.g., on-board train controller), radio communications, formal methods, optimal scheduling, and extensive simulations. We focus on the design aspects for maintaining the system in safe states.

High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) is efficient equipment in comminution process. HPGR could be a good option for preparing ball mill feed at the first stage of grinding due to its high efficiency and low energy consumption. Closing with a screen, these mills are utilizing as one of the principle parts in mineral processing industries, especially for iron ores. Recently, HPGRs are working as primary mills at 4 developing lines in Gol-e-Gohar Iron Ore Processing Complex, Iran. Different mechanism of particle crushing in compare to the other tumbling mills makes the HPGR as certain equipment with its own particular controlling parameters. Hydraulic pressure, roller speed and level of material inside feeding hopper are the most important variables influencing grinding efficiency of the HPGR. To figure out how they impress the process and operation situation, different industrial tests were carried out and the best result (d80 about 8 mm for HPGR discharge) was achieved at 180-190 bar pressure (P), 300 rpm speed (S) and 50% of hopper level (L). It is worth noting that this finding has been observed through past pilot test too. We also used design expert method (DX7 software) to develop the best design and analysis the test results, as well. According to the mechanical restriction of HPGR and process limitation in the plant (based on the industrial results), we adjusted value of each parameter in a logical range. Therefore, 20 industrial tests were conducted, as DX7 recommended, and the various impacts of the parameters and their interaction were identified based on statistical analysis. As the authors expected, it was revealed that after presser, roller speed is a critical variable because of its significant role in residence time of the particles between the rollers. The function below has been determined to explain the relation between different parameters and the response.

"Generally, fly ash particles are very fine (< 100 ?m), mainly spherical and glassy materials form an outer shell on it. This paper deals with the laboratory investigation of ground fly ash based geopolymer. This material can be applied in many fields, mainly in the construction industry, e.g. non-structural elements, concrete, pavements and products, containment and immobilization of toxic, hazardous and radioactive wastes, advanced structural tooling and refractory ceramics, and fire resistant composites used in buildings, etc. The preparation of fly ash using high energy density milling is presented. Systematic experimental series were carried out in order to optimize the preparation process. The particle size distribution (LPSA) and structure of fly ash (FTIR) and the uniaxial compressive strength ,the permeability and structure of geopolymer product, furthermore the rheology of geopolymer paste were investigated. The product properties were studied as a function of the fly ash fineness. As a result of the investigation the relationship between the grinding circumstances, the ground material properties and the geopolymer characteristics was identified. It was found that the above mentioned physical properties of the geopolymer strongly depend on the grinding process."

Froth stability is widely recognized as a key driver of flotation selectivity. It is well known that froth stability is affected by the type and quantity of surface active reagents present (frothers), and the concentration and hydrophobicity of solid particles present. While some studies have been performed on the effect of frothers on froth stability in three-phase systems and the hydrophobicity of particles present, very little work has been performed on the effect of solids loading on froth stability. This may be due to insufficiently robust measurement techniques. This paper investigates the use of a new machine vision measurement to measure solids loading, and the relationship between this measurement, bubble size, and bubble burst rate on the froth surface. "Historically the focus at the mineral processing sites has been to improve the production operations, while little focus has been set on how factors, such as the quality of water used in the process affects the metal recovery. Simultaneously increasing public pressure and water scarcity is driving the mining industry to recycle more water back to the process, which in turn leads to accumulation of impurities within the recycled water. This paper presents a concept for a systematic approach on targeting the impurities that have a negative effect on the metal recovery at the flotation circuit by using a novel solution called Process Water Recycling Plant (PWRP). These plants are designed with specific ore type in mind. PWRP produces cost-effectively process water to different target qualities, especially for flotation purposes enabling higher and more stable flotation recovery. It consists of pre-designed and standard water treatment units for a wide range of volumes. The application-specific configuration of units is governed by the water quality requirements, and can be designed according to specific customer needs. Testing has been carried out in order to investigate, which recycling water impurities affect the different ore types and how the metal recovery in flotation is affected as a consequence of the poor-quality water. The results indicate that every ore type is impacted differently and without a good understanding on how the water quality impacts the process performance, adverse effects on the flotation recovery can occur.INTRODUCTION With a focus on where water is used within the mineral processing, it has become evident that even though water is used in several different processes, majority of the water losses within the site occur at the tailings processing and the tailings storage facility. New tailings management technologies that can increase the recovery of water are actively being developed, but the key to improving the efficiency of water use and reducing the operational risks lies in closing the water loops and increasing the slurry density in the tailings processing. With this shift from conventional tailings technologies towards paste and dry stacking, water efficiency is vastly improved, but it might in turn lead to process water challenges with impurities, reagents and fines being recycled and accumulated within the production processes."

The packed coke bed in the lower part of an iron making blast furnace, the dead man, dissolves slowly in a pool of hot metal, which is tapped regularly. The coke particles of the dead man not only exhibit a size distribution, but also their size distribution is non-uniform throughout the dead man and as a result, the porosity of the dead man is non-uniform. This causes the flow of hot metal through the dead man to be irregular and non-uniform, bringing about channelling in the coke bed. Channelling is detrimental to the refractory lining life of the hearth of a blast furnace. Using population balance modelling and a porosity model it is possible to keep track of the local changes in size distribution and bed porosity during dissolution of coke particles. Numerical simulations show that carbon dissolution from a packed coke bed (with particles which exhibit a size distribution) increases the average porosity, decreases the mean particle size and changes the size distribution to a distribution with a smaller size range. Influence of the type of initial size distribution (mean, variance) is investigated. The calculated changes in porosity are used to dynamically adapt the flow and the mass transfer (kinetics) during calculations. This approach provides the possibility to implement dynamic porosity calculations for CFD applications, and thus simulate the results of various coke types and particle size distributions on dissolution and flow behaviour.

"The effects of pH value and dissolved oxygen(DO) in the pulp to the Eh and flotation recovery of pyrite were investigated using potential online detection system. The effects of DO on the Eh and flotation recovery were tested which DO changed from 0.5mg/L to 19.5mg/L in six different pH buffer flotation systems (pH: 4.00, 5.62, 6.86, 9.18, 10.01 and 10.96 respectively). Results of potential detected online demonstrated that the pyrite electrode has nearly the same response to potential as with platinum electrode for the FeS2-xanthate-H2O flotation system under the study conditions. Pulp potential and recovery of pyrite were remarkably influenced by pH, both of them decreased with the increasing of pH and, especially, sharp decreased after pH above 9. As the concentration of DO was increased, the Eh was also increased in all the six different buffer solution, while the flotation recovery was decreased. And the amplitude of variation for Eh was not obvious in acidic and neutral solutions, but on the contrary, the change for flotation recovery was remarkable in neutral and alkaline conditions. This may indicate that the flotation of pyrite will be deteriorated in alkaline and high DO concentration conditions."

Calcium sulfate whiskers are considered to be a prosperous reinforced material in application due to their high mechanical properties. But the hydration occurs easily at moist atmosphere or in aqueous solution. The surface topographies of the calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers and the hydrates were analyzed by on-line observation and using XRD. The results indicated the transformation of the crystal type and shape of calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers and the reduction of whiskers? aspect ratio. The hydration process of the calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers and the effective parameters were further discussed based on FT-IR measurements. The conclusions were obtained that the hydration of calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers can be divided into the three phases, namely, initial hemihydration phase, dehydration phase, and coarsening, dissolving and the re-formation of calcium sulfate dehydrate crystal phase. In addition, it was found that in the hydration process of calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers the calcium sulfate dihydrate whiskers are formed at first and then converted into the calcium sulfate dihydrate with different crystal shapes, but in the hydration of gypsum hemihydrate the gypsum dihydrate is formed without transition products. The surface active site-calcium ion which has strong trend to react with H2O, the surface ?OH and the inner channels are considered to play important roles in the hydration process of calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers.

"Aqueous dispersions of air specifically prepared on the basis of flotation reagent solution acquire active properties in relation to the solid surface and may be imply as a medium for flotation ores. Such aerated solutions were defined as Activated Aqueous Dispersions of Air (AADA) with 5-6:1 ratio and the procedure of mineral separation was defined as a flotation process under non-equilibrium conditions. These procedures differ from conventional flotation mainly in reagent interaction with minerals through their adsorption films on gas bubbles simultaneously forming flotation complexes. Gas-liquid mixture is kept till an adsorption layer of reagents close to the limit value is formed on the surface of bubbles. The theoretical basis of AADA is considered.The results of two-phase gas- liquid mixture (AADA) were studied. Two versions of AADA were considered. Electrical surface potential of the air bubbles with the surfactant film, untreated minerals particles in Coulomb attraction and flotation complex formation were analyzed. Special flotation machines were constructed for separation of mineral suspension in air dispersion, whose effectiveness was confirmed in flotation of apatite waste of Kovdor ore. FK-9 machine introduced on Kovdor iron ore combine for the recovery of apatite from current departures of factory. The froth product contained 7.2 % P2O5, with recovery of 44 % apatite, which was processed for getting melted phosphoric-magnesium fertilizers."

Coal beneficiation with optical sorting has not yet been studied in detail. Optical separation of coal from gangue particles as a dry method can be used as an alternative to the other enrichment methods. Developments in optical and pneumatic technology put the optical sorting one step forward by means of applicability of the mechanical sorting to the mineral industry. Because of the inefficient separation performance, dry separation of coal is very limited in industrial applications. Therefore, optical sorting depending on color differences between two minerals can be introduced to coal beneficiation systems. In this study, coal samples obtained from Konya-Ilgin region (Central Anatolia-Turkey) were separated by optical sorter and the results were evaluated. The conventional floatability tests for Ilgin coal are conducted by collecting most of the feed material at 1.3-1.4 g/cm3 density range. Separation of Ilgin coals with heavy medium methods will not be possible because of poor density difference between coal and its impurities. There are important color differences among the floated particles at 1.3-1.4 g/cm3 density range. Therefore, Ilgin coal is subjected to optical sorting in a pilot scale optical sorter. Different size fractions were fed to the optical sorter and then rejected and accepted particles by equipment were analyzed. Ash content of the accepted particles was reduced to 25-35 % and ash in tail increases up to 55-60 % after sorting. Although most of the material floated at low densities, optical sorter separated the feed into two different quality products. This study has the potential to clarify applicability of optical sorting even to non-floatable coals and to provide an important contribution to both industrial applications and literature.

The Indian steel industry is growing at a rapid pace and expected to be the 2nd largest steel producer in the world after China. To cope up with this growth and to sustain it, the industry needs to focus on effective utilization of domestic metallurgical coals. While the importance of indigenous coal has increased, its supply from the domestic sources is declining. This is primarily due to high ash content in Indian coals leading to its difficulty in washing to a low level competitive to imported coals. Non-availability of a suitable beneficiation technology to bring down the ash to such a low level is the other reason. Effective utilization of current technologies has enabled Tata Steel to bring down the ash to 13-16% from its captive collieries. However, further lowering the ash using the conventional beneficiation technologies is difficult and unsustainable. New technologies should be developed for bringing down the ash further. A thrust area research program has been undertaken at Tata Steel for producing clean coal with 8% ash maintaining the yield currently achieved in its washeries. The technologies attempted are based on chemical beneficiation of coal. In leaching process, suitable chemicals are used for extracting ash minerals from the coal. As an alternative process, the combustible part of the coal is being extracted using a suitable organic solvent through an organo-refining process. Both the processes have been successfully developed in the laboratory and are being demonstrated in pilot scales. Various beneficiation processes practiced at Tata Steel including the efforts made for developing new processes for achieving clean coal with 8% ash have been discussed in this paper.
