The design and construction of drilled piers through water bearing and caving soil conditions are discussed. The need for close cooperation between the design engineer and contractor in both the design and construction stage is outlined. Four case histories illustrating the design and construction considerations for four different problem soil and ground water profiles are presented, including the field testing and observation procedures that were utilized to confirm that the design inten. was accomplished. Requirements advisable when placing concrete under water in a cased environment and when placing concrete under slurry in an uncased environment are described.

Many existing bridge abutments on the soft ground laterally move and their many damage examples have been reported. An essential cause for the troubles of the lateral movements may be the lack of examinations for the lateral earth pressure acting on its foundation piles. In the present paper, actual movement condition of existing bridge abutments is first summarized, and then the author establishes a practical and systematical design method for bridge abutment foundation piles, including the examination for the passive pile.

It is a frequent experience to find that the Sub-surface Investigation (S.I.) data is either inadequate or misleading. However, such cases are rarely reported. Nonetheless, the projects suffer on-account of delays, cost-over-runs, disputes and/or compromise of the safety norms. Many times S.I. is considered unnecessary or is carried out as a ritual, mainly due to (i) non-availability of good S.I. agencies, or (ii) absence of Geotechnical consultant, or (iii) shortage of time. Importance of S.I. cannot be over emphasised. Yet the profession is in a state of confusion - mainly because of lack of competent professional agencies and of well-defined roles/responsibilities of the concerned parties. In this paper, some suggestions are made to get better returns from the S.I. activity.

There are cases where it is found that a raft foundation would have adequate factor of safety against ultimate bearing capacity failure but the settlements would be excessive. Piles may be introduced in order to limit settlements to an acceptable level. The actual number of piles required to reduce the settlements to an acceptable level may be very small compared to the number of piles required to transmit the whole structure load. The paper focuses on the difficulties encountered in evaluating the load sharing between raft and piles. An elaborate analysis taking into account the interaction between raft, piles and soil is very complex and time consuming. Few approximate methods for arriving at a satisfactory solution to piled raft system are discussed in the present paper.

Geotechnical investigation for a LPG plant located in Assam state - an area of high seisimicty - revealed a layer of loose to medium silty sand susceptible to liquefaction at some depth below the finished ground surface. Liquefaction analyses were carried out using simplified Seed's approach as well as considering the progressive buildup of pore pressures with cyclic earthquake loading. Seismic settlements were computed for areas where the analysis indicated partial liquefaction. Pile foundations in areas where complete liquefaction was indicated, were treated with gravel drains to prevent buildup of pore pressures. The paper presents and discusses the liquefaction analyses, effect of non-liquefiable overburden soil on the liquefaction potential of the silty sand and the remedial measures that have been taken to ensure safety of the pile foundations in transmitting vertical and lateral loads.

Estimation of vertical load carrying capacity of a single vertical pile under earthquake loading is an important task of a design engineer. Lateral vibration of vertical pile is highly influenced by the magnitude of vertical load. Several load reversal, during earthquake loading introduce gap between pile soil interface which reduces its load carrying capacity and increases lateral motion. This paper presents a simple time domain numerical scheme to estimate the lateral pile response, considering the loss of contact of pile at pile soil interface, during impact and earthquake loading. The motion of the pile is limited in the vertical plane. Time domain has been discretised into small intervals. The non linearity of soil properties has been taken into account by discretised Winklers model with Wolfes frequency independent mass spring dash pot coefficient for geometric damping. Suitable software has been developed which keeps track of the load reversal point of each elements.

Long-term maintained load test on the bored pile group in unsaturated silty soil has been carried out. And the research on the time effects of bearing behavior of pile group has been done by the method of installing pressure cells and reinforcement stress gauges for measuring the soil reaction beneath the cap and the pile bottom as well as the shaft resistance. The test shows that, within a certain duration after loading, the soil reaction beneath the cap and the pile point resistance increase with time; but the shaft resistance decreases. The load distribution among the pile tops in the group tends to be even with time. The shaft resistance redistributes along the pile shaft with time, that is, getting less in the upper part, getting larger in the middle. The redistribution does not tend to stop till the distribution in both upper and middle part becomes to be uniform. The load-bearing conditions of soil beneath the cap of pile group and the variation in time effects with related factors also have been discussed.

Drilled shaft (caisson) foundations are extensively used in the past. In the central part of New Jersey, the soils consist of silt and clayey silt overlying Triassic age shale bedrock. The shale is friable and generally severely weathered and highly fractured. The shale crumbles readily into small fragments. In general, the shale is encountered in shallow depth. Subsurface investigations indicated that the upper part of the shale is very soft, highly weathered, and able to advance through soil exploration methods. The underlain formation is relatively hard and required rock coring techniques for sapling. Individual core recoveries ranged from 10 to 100 percent and Rock Quality Designations (RQD) vary from 0 to 90 percent. Although several methods available to estimate the axial capacity of drilled shafts, it is a difficult task for the designer choose the suitable method due to self disintegrate nature of the shale. In the recent years several bridge foundations have been constructed using drilled shafts founded on shale rock in the vicinity of the central New Jersey. Based on load tests carried out on drilled shafts during construction, subsurface exploration, and laboratory tests, suitable methods for determining axial capacity of drilled shafts is analyzed. This paper presents the findings of the field tests and suitable methods to determine the axial capacity of drilled shaft founded on soft shale. "PART 1 OF 2INTRODUCTIONSlurry trenches are the least cost hydraulic barrier available, if the excavated spoils can be recycled into backfill. As such, slurry trenches are constructed where possible, sometimes at high risk. Slurry trenches are also used to install biopolymer drainage trenches, which have a low safety factor because the biopolymer slurry weight is marginally greater than the weight of water. In marginal ground the construction risk falls to both the Owner who designs and asks for the construction, and the Contractor who manages the work and promises to complete the project successfully. This paper discusses design and construction of slurry trench barriers in marginally stable ground and where groundwater chemistry invokes the need for slurry management details to obtain proper backfill placement.As a designer, Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers works for both Owners and Contractors. We are usually able to convince Owners of their responsibility for design detailing in order to obtain a working final product and to obtain reasonable bids from Contractors by disclosing construction needs and designing to reduce the contractor’s exposure. "INTRODUCTIONStatic Load Testing (SLT) is generally considered the pile testing method that provides the de-facto answers regarding pile capacity and load-deflection behavior. However, as this testing method is time consuming and costly, alternative pile testing methods are applied, such as High-Strain Dynamic Testing (HSDT), commonly referred to as Dynamic Load Testing (DLT), and Rapid Load Testing (RLT), which includes Statnamic Testing (STN) and the Fundex Pile Load Tester (PLT). Extensive descriptions of these pile testing methods as well as comparisons of the results from these two methods have been widely published, but little is written on the choice between HSDT and RLT. This article will address this issue for concrete piles by discussing five different aspects that should be considered when making a choice between HSDT and RLT for either cast-in-situ piles or precast driven piles. TIMINGThe timing of the pile load test is independent of the testing method. For cast-in-situ piles load testing is performed some time after the pile has been installed (to allow the pile to obtain the compressive strength required to withstand the test load), while for precast driven piles load testing is performed after a so-called set-up period following pile installation (to allow the soil to recover from driving induced disturbances and, at least in most cases,regain strength).In other words, the timing of the test does not affect the choice of the testing method.ACCURACY OF THE APPLIED LOADWhen a pile is tested by RLT the applied load is measured by a calibrated load cell placed on the pile head, just as it would be during SLT. This means that the error in the applied load value is less than 0.1% of the maximum range of the load cell.However, when a pile is tested by HSDT the load is calculated from the measured strains, which means that the outcome is dependent on the pile material properties. In this case the applied load (F) on the pile head is calculated by multiplying the measured strain (?) with either the calculated or estimated elastic modulus of concrete (E) and the pile cross section (A).The elastic modulus is generally back calculated from the (average) stress wave velocity (c), which in turn is derived from the reflection time (T) it takes for a stress wave to travel over the pile length (L) from the pile head to the pile toe and back to the pile head."
