"When an opportunity arises to combine state-of-the-art concepts with advanced modeling tools, engineers need to take what they know and apply forward thinking to geotechnical solutions to promote the state-ofpractice. Such an opportunity was seized during the design and construction of the Great American Tower in Cincinnati, Ohio. The forty-one story Great American Tower at Queen City Square – currently the tallest building in Cincinnati – has not only changed the downtown skyline, it is also contributing to the advancement of the state-of-the-art use of auger cast-in-place (ACIP) piles as settlement reducers. Predicted settlements of a traditional mat foundation were excessive, and the costs and construction time associated with traditional ACIP piles extending to bedrock were not preferred. A mat supported on a limited number of ACIP piles, with the piles primarily acting as settlement reducers, was evaluated as the preferred foundation type.Promoting the unique soil-structure interaction of the foundation system with confidence required the use of sophisticated numerical modeling tools. Traditional standard penetration test boring data (SPT) was initially used to develop a numerical analysis of the soil-structure interaction using FLAC 3D software. The model was further modified with cone penetration (CPT) and pressuremeter testing (PMT), along with actual load test results on several ACIP pile elements of varying lengths, but all tipping above bedrock. Through a combined design team effort, and detailed numerical modeling analysis, ACIP piles were recommended for reducing mat foundation settlement. Instrumentation during and post-construction confirmed design assumptions and predictions. Integrating sound geotechnical concepts, and using advanced geotechnical analysis and design methods, traditional mat and ACIP pile foundations were successfully integrated into a unique foundation support system.INTRODUCTIONThe Great American Tower at Queen City Square in Cincinnati, Ohio is located within a region dissected by historical geologic deviances associated with the meander of the Ohio River and glacial progression/recession. Combining a challenging geology, with the development of a high-rise office building afforded the design team an opportunity to combine state-of-the-art soil-structure interaction concepts and method with traditional geotechnical engineering concepts. Such a combination required a variety of field tests, collaboration with the design team and owner, and geotechnical-structural modeling during the design phase. During construction, in addition to materials testing and observation, a variety of instrumentation systems were employed. Together, the data was used to corroborate the design model and make adjustments during construction and further substantiate design assumptions following construction."

The Trenton Water Treatment Facility in Trenton, New Jersey, is expanding to upgrade existing facilities and to meet the increasing demands of the public. The facility sits uncomfortably between the northern bank of the Delaware River and Route 29, a busy traffic corridor. Flooding along this bank of the river occurs frequently and disrupts traffic along Route 29. The expansion plans for the facility call for several large clarifying tanks on a mat foundation covering an area of about 100 x 350 ft. The original design was to remove and replace up to 20 ft of existing fill and soft materials. Due to the close proximity to the existing structures and the Delaware River, it would be necessary to use sheet piles and tiebacks to support the proposed excavation, as well as the existing structures. The solution adopted consisted of the installation of vibro-replacement stone columns to improve the in situ soils and eliminate the need for excavation and replacement. This approach was tremendously successful. It mitigated the significant risk of flooding of the excavation, and provided a cost-effective alternative to mitigate settlement of the proposed tanks on the poor soft subgrade soils. This paper presents the details of the criteria for selection and design of the stone columns, and the process followed for installation of the stone columns and for verification of the level of soil improvement achieved. It also includes a back analysis of the results of a large scale, 10- by 10-foot plate load test performed on a group of stone columns using numerical procedures and recommendations for design and construction.

Marine environments present a range of challenges for pile construction. This paper contains a discussion on the design and construction of marine piles for a recent Toll Shipping wharf upgrade in Burnie, Tasmania. The project involved several new structures including mooring, berthing and ramp dolphins supported by driven tubular piles with rock sockets, and an onshore mooring dolphin and ramp abutment supported by bored piles. Through the project, a range of construction challenges were experienced, including availability of tubular piles, the different penetration depths of driven piles into rock, the ability to drill out sockets when the piles were raked, the difficulty in verifying the design intent, latent conditions and ship impacts. The paper will present a summary of the different factors that influenced design concepts for the structures involved in the upgrade, and the challenges involved in the design of the structures. Following this, the paper will describe the methodology used to verify the design (including a pullout test), observations made during pile construction and lessons learned on how to limit risk throughout construction.

Kinematic demands from lateral ground deformations can be a major cause of damage to maritime and highway transportation structures such as wharves, piers, and bridges. These kinematic demands are different from the ground deformations in the free field in that the resisting forces from piles will reduce the ground deformations to some extent (i.e., pile pinning effect). Current design codes for wharf structures allow the beneficial resisting forces from pile pinning effects to be incorporated in pseudostatic slope stability analysis (e.g., ASCE/COPRI 61-14). While design guidelines that are specifically developed for bridge foundations provide recommendations on how to incorporate the pile pinning effects (e.g., Caltrans 2012), their applicability to wharf structures need to be evaluated. This study uses the results of a large-scale centrifuge test on a pile-supported wharf structure to evaluate the accuracy of available Newmark sliding block analysis in estimating the lateral ground deformations. Pile pinning effects are incorporated based on the approach outlined by Caltrans. The results of this study support the use of existing pile pinning methods that were primarily developed for bridge foundations in maritime structures (e.g., wharves and piers). It was found that median Newmark displacements provide a good estimate of the permanent end-of-shaking displacements and that the median plus 1 standard deviation Newmark displacements provide a good estimate of the peak transient displacements. Design considerations for use in the Newmark sliding block analysis to estimate the kinematic demands on piles are discussed.

The Texas Department of Transportation, now considering using Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) Piles (also known as Continuous-Flight-Auger or CFA Piles) in their foundations, awarded a research project to Professor Mike O'Neill at the University of Houston (UH) to study the advantages and potential difficulties with ACIP/CFA piles. ACIP/CFA piles were installed on three sites for UH; they had extra instrumentation and additional measurements by UH staff during installation which are beyond the scope of this paper. Independent visual logging of the pile was done by an experienced inspection firm. The main advantages of ACIP/CFA piles are their speed of installation and their economy. Potential savings are substantial. Disadvantages include an unknown structural condition of the shaft. Inspection is critical, but many simultaneous observations make accurate inspection difficult. Because of resulting uncertainty, many engineers have avoided ACIP/CFA piles in the past.

Verticality data collected from panel and pile elements of seepage barrier walls describe the shape and position of those elements in three dimensions. These data are used to determine if a barrier wall is constructed as designed and if it meets the owner specifications with respect to tolerance (i.e., if each element is sufficiently close to vertical) and overlap (i.e., do adjacent elements overlap sufficiently to prevent leakage). Contractors use verticality data to confirm that their work matches the design, and owners use verticality data to verify the contractor’s work and confirm that specified criteria were met. Project Information Management Systems (PIMS) technology has been applied to the management, visualization, and analysis of verticality data. This paper will provide examples of how contractors and owners have used a PIMS to compile and synthesize data collected during excavations (e.g., from Cutter Soil Mixer and Hydromill drill rig telemetry), and from measurements of completed excavations (e.g., using the Koden ultrasonic tool), and used those data to model excavation geometry. We will present case studies of using these models to estimate backfill placement volumes, and to evaluate the verticality tolerance and overlap between elements.

"Following damage caused by the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, the NZ$127.5million Christchurch Town Hall Restoration project is due for completion in 2018. The building is undergoing extensive repairs and a strengthening regime to meet New Zealand’s New Building Standard. One major aspect of the project is the stabilisation of the soil directly beneath the building using interconnected jetgrouting columns installed a cellular configuration, the purpose of this being to decrease the likelihood and severity of foundation movements caused by earthquake-induced soil liquefaction and lateral spreading. The soils encountered on the site ranged from cobbles and gravels through to sandy silts with a significant quantity of timber and rootlets. This wide variation of soil types presented a number of challenges with regard to effective and consistent treatment by jet grouting. The paper presents an overview of the quality assurance practices and also the testing regime adopted on this project.INTRODUCTIONMost of the deformation experienced by the Christchurch Town Hall structure over the course of the Canterbury earthquakes was caused by movement of the underlying ground. Two primary mechanisms of ground deformation were observed:- Liquefaction of the soils underlying the building foundation- Lateral spread of surface soils towards the free face at the river edge which runs 20 metres from the building. This mechanism also resulted in additional vertical settlement of the building foundations.The overall foundation design philosophy adopted by the project team for the Christchurch Town Hall Conservation Project has been to improve the ground directly beneath the structure to mitigate against these two mechanisms of ground movement. Additionally, a robust raft slab is proposed to distribute the foundation loading more evenly and increase the ability of the structure to resist lateral stretch of the underlying ground.The ground improvement system proposed by the Client’s geotechnical consultants, Tonkin &Taylor, comprised a cellular arrangement of interlocking jet grout columns, this arrangement would effectively encapsulate the soil within the cells preventing lateral spread.In total 1,097 interlocking jet grout columns, extending over the entire floor plan of the structure, were required to satisfy the design requirements."

The City of Chicago has a world-renowned skyline and is known for its provocative architecture. The subsurface conditions in the city have allowed for construction of these significant structures. The skyline is supported on caissons as they are called in Chicago or drilled shafts in other locations. Despite the significant strides the industry has made in advancing the drilled shaft, the use of other specialty geotechnical construction techniques like micropiles has not been overlooked in Chicago and the surrounding areas. Micropiles have been utilized to underpin famous existing historic structures like Orchestra Hall any many others. Engineers have used 200 to 600 kip micropiles to underpin compromised, inadequate, or damaged caissons. The paper will discuss the use of drilled shafts, micropiles, and ground improvement over the last 30 years in Chicago using a curated collection of case histories. It will also examine advancing the industry beyond its current technical limitations using these techniques. INTRODUCTION 20,000 years ago, glaciers from the Chicago region left behind sheets of glacial clay till underlain by dense, over consolidated glacial till below: limestone bedrock, found about 100 ft below street level. An unusual feature in this profile is the soft Chicago Blue Clay. Chicago has been called the birthplace of the Skyscraper and drilled shaft foundation, both of which came about in the 19th century. After the Great Fire of 1871, tall new structures were built rapidly and designing a successful foundation was trial and error. The first deep driven wood pile and caisson foundations bypassed the problem layer and found solid support on hardpan till or bedrock below (Schock and Risberg 2013). Once the drilled shaft foundation became acceptable to the Chicago engineering and construction community, building heights and complexity grew dramatically. As the city grew, building foundations were being repurposed. There was also the need to underpin structures for additional loads and shallow foundations for adjacent construction. Hand-dug drilled shafts were an option for some of these restricted access and low headroom sites but a new technique, micropiles, would prove to be the future of retrofit and hard to construct foundations. Micropiles were introduced on a limited basis to the United States market in the 1970s and 80s. In the early 1990s, the Chicago market began to latch onto micropiles and their use has grown significantly as a solution to the most complex foundation problems a maturing skyline has to offer.

Sustainability continues to be an important aspect of remediation and infrastructure projects. Deep soil mixing (DSM), a common construction and remedial technology, can easily incorporate the following sustainability best management practices (BMPs), including Minimizing Total Energy Use and Maximizing Use of Renewable Energy; Minimizing Air Pollutants and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions and Maximizing Use of Machinery Equipped with Advanced Emission; Minimizing Water Use and Impacts to Water Resources; Beneficial Reuse of Materials/Reduction of Materials and Waste Reduction; Use of Local Labor and Supplies. This paper focuses on the sustainability of DSM treatment and provide carbon footprint calculations at least one completed DSM project which used these sustainability BMPs to demonstrate the environmental impact of the sustainability.

Several infrastructure projects are under construction in India; many of them involves construction of deep foundations like reinforced concrete and steel piles to support super structures. As most of the piles being constructed in India are reinforced concrete bored piles, there are always uncertainties relating to the quality of construction, and in this case non-destructive methods to ascertain quality of piles becomes very crucial to success of any project. Non-destructive pile testing is becoming more and more popular with growing technologies wherein geophysical techniques and wave propagation theories are being used for pile quality and length analysis. Low-strain pulse echo method and cross-hole sonic logging testing are two pile integrity testing techniques being currently practiced in India which are cost effective and provides reliable near accurate results if analyzed properly. Paper presents current practices being adopted in India for conducting these two tests, highlighting the critical site considerations and analysis techniques. The paper also discusses various execution and interpretation challenges faced by practicing engineers and recommends a way forward.

"A waterfront stabilization system consisting of Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) columns, vinyl sheet pile fascia, and concrete flood walls supported on shallow footings was designed and constructed for a high-density waterfront development in Northern California. The project site is underlain by soft, compressible organic soil locally known as Bay Mud that has been capped with loose sand and imported fill. The waterfront stabilization system constructed at the site mitigates liquefaction, consolidation settlement and seismic potential slope deformation along the waterfront; the system was designed to reduce lateral displacements to tolerable amounts for the proposed structures. This paper presents the general design methodologies, construction challenges and quality control of this waterfront stabilization system.INTRODUCTIONUrban development in Northern California is fueling innovations in geotechnical engineering as more complex sites are developed. ENGEO Incorporated introduced a deep soil mixing technology from Japan to the US and designed a waterfront stabilization system for a high density waterfront development project in Redwood City, California. The approximately 12½-acre project site, as shown on Fig. 1, is surrounded by water on three sides, with an inner marina at the center of the site.The project site is located in the seismically active San Francisco Bay Area in California. The San Andreas Fault, the Monte Vista-Shannon Fault, the Hayward Fault and the San Gregorio Fault are major active faults located within 25 miles of the site. Once a former marshland with a major slough until the late 1950s, the site was reclaimed by placing imported fill over the native compressible clay deposits, locally known as Bay Mud."

"In 2005, an inspection showed that the Deception Bay Wharf in the Canadian Arctic was at the end of its service life. Although Deception Bay is closed with landfast ice up to 5 ft thick, shipping operations continue year-round, with additional voyages in the summer open-water season to supplement mine supplies. The rehabilitation scheme that allowed minimal interruptions to shipping involved concrete caissons cast on barges and an ingenious placing system.WorleyParsons Westmar of Vancouver, B.C., performed the inspection under contract to the owner, Xstrata Nickel, Montreal, Quebec. The wharf, on the coast of the Nunavik region of Quebec, was originally constructed in 1971 for an asbestos mine, and is now used to support Xstrata’s Raglan nickel mine, importing fuel for p o w e r g e n e r a t i o n a n d general mine supplies, and exporting nickel concentrate to smelters in the south. Emergency repairs were essential to allow operations to continue at the site, while the parties considered permanent rehabilitation options and secured funding. The repairs were done in the openwater seasons, and included reinforcing the failed interlocks above water level with steel patch plates and injection grouting of the cell fill below the port crane in 2005. In 2006, workers installed a circumferential belting system below water level.Westmar held critical planning sessions with the mine operation personnel to find ways to stretch the limits of the mine supplies and nickel storage facilities. In the end, the parties agreed to shut down construction activities four times during the ice-free season to allow access to the dock site.Westmar developed a plan that allowed mine operations to continue during construction, and Xstrata approved the plan and budget in September 2006, for execution in 2007. Rapid construction was essential. To accommodate the short construction season and maintain minimum levels of service for the mine, the work was radically different from conventional Arctic deep-sea port construction. Like the original Deception Bay Wharf, construction practice was to use steel sheet pile circular cells with the consequential heavy support services for the labour force. Construction duration was typically two seasons. The plan for Deception Bay was executable in one season based on a concrete caisson structure. Only a modest amount of schedule float was needed."

As a part of Mumbai City Mega Drinking Water Project at Amar Mahal Tunnel-1 Ghatkopar East Mumbai, drinking water tunnels were proposed by MCGM from Amar Mahal to Trombay reservoirs, Amar Mahal to Wadala and further up to Parel. The pipeline has to be underground and laid at a depth of 5.5m. The initial proposal was to provide sheet piling to enable the safe excavation and installation of underground pipeline. However, installation of sheetpiles was practically not feasible due to the existing soil strata for driving the sheet piles. Hence, it was proposed to install micropiles instead of sheet piles. In this paper we discuss about the purpose, basic design, detailed design approaches and actual work implementation of micro pile with temporary struts for shoring protection works in this project.

]The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the harbors on the James River routinely use precast concrete piles founded in the Yorktown formation to support bridges and other coastal structures. However, axial pile resistances for large diameter piles in this area have been historically overestimated on past projects. This may be due to a common assumption that very large unit end bearing resistance will be developed for a large diameter displacement pile that is driven a significant depth. This assumption is integrated in the Nordlund (1963; 1979) method which is commonly used to estimate axial pile resistance for bridge foundations. A static and dynamic pile load testing program was implemented as part of the Hampton Roads Bridge and Tunnel Expansion project in Norfolk, VA in the James River. A primary objective of this program was to calibrate an axial resistance calculation method against the measured load test results. A method developed by Eslami and Fellenius (1997) that uses CPTu data directly was effective at calibrating to the measured load test results, and allowed for clearer interpretation of the unit resistance values than indirect, semi-empirical methods that require interpretation of soil friction angle and undrained shear strength.

The Hillside Smelter presently under construction at Richards Bay, Republic of South Africa, will be, on completion, the fifth largest aluminium smelter in the world. The site selected for this plant is underlain by sandy soils of variable density to depths of 30m or greater. In order to firmly establish pile founding depths required for alternative pile types in the variable subsurface conditions prevailing across the site, a pre-construction test piling programme was conducted incorporating piles instrumented with resistance strain gauges. The results allowed analysis of the relative contributions of end-bearing and shaft friction to the overall bearing capacity of each pile type and permitted comparison with the predictions of conventional static bearing capacity analyses. Conformance with acceptance criteria in respect of allowable pile head movements for single piles was also examined.

"Many soil mixing methods have evolved over the years, but the Trench Cutting Re-mixing Deep method (TRD) was developed in Japan, circa 1993, to construct continuous uniform cutoff walls, without the need for an open trench. TRD mixing has been used on over 300 projects in Japan for excavation support, groundwater barriers, liquefaction mitigation, soil improvement and pollution containment. To date, TRD mixing has been used on only three projects in the United States: a test cell in Long Beach, Calif., for seawater intrusion barrier in 2004; a groundwater barrier at a wastewater treatment plant in Lincoln, Calif., in 2005; and presently at Herbert Hoover Dike surrounding Lake Okeechobee in southeastern Florida.The most notable benefits of TRD are its abilities to overcome difficult geology, such as layered rock and dense cobbles and gravels that hinder other soil mixing methods, and to create extremely high-quality walls. The method is ideal for situations in which access precludes the use of more traditional methods due to spoil control, such as waterways and congested urban environments or subsurface obstruction/difficult ground. Spoil disposal is minimized since TRD mixes the soil in place.TRD mixing has a horizontal continuity advantage over traditional multi-auger deep soil mixing (DSM) systems. Because DSM systems create walls by overlapping soil-cement columns, the auger may be deflected by difficult ground, and gaps are possible. Gaps may also occur when constructing an exceptionally deep wall due to the possibility of auger deviation from its required vertical alignment.The method also has a homogeneity advantage in layered soils. Because DSM constructs columns by rotating the defined length mixing tools up and down the soil profile while injecting binder, strength and permeability in each layer will vary. The TRD method vertically mixes the entire profile and core samples show highly uniform strength. It is most cost-effective in deep difficult ground such as layered rock or dense cobbles and gravels."

"The process of filtrate loss of low solid-phase drilling fluid at different content of polyanionic cellulose is investigated by the standard filtration test. The test results showed that when time of filtration is same, the filtrate volume decreases linearly with the increase of content of polyanionic cellulose. When content of polyanionic cellulose is same, the velocity of filter loss decreases nonlinearly with the increase of time and the velocity of filter loss will reach a stable value. The filtrate volume in 7 to 8 minutes can reach half of the total filtrate volume. At the same time, the velocity of filter loss of drilling fluid decreases nonlinearly with the increase of viscosity. When apparent viscosity is between 3.5~4.15 mPa.s, decrease speed of velocity of filter loss is quick. The results are helpful for characteristics evaluation of filtrate loss of drilling fluid and control of filtrate loss.IntroductionDuring the process of drilling, water of drilling fluid can leakage into stratum, the water can result in instability and collapse of borehole wall. At the same time, the original ratio of drilling fluid will change. The density of drilling fluid will increase, the performance of the drilling fluid will change. Controlling amount of filtration is important to drill successfully. The additives of controlling filtrate loss are mainly two types, particle materials and polymer materials. High-molecular polymer is a kind of high-molecular material, has the adsorption effect, high polymer protection, can improve the advantages of slurry viscosity (Xu,2004 and Dehghanpour,2001). Some scholars carried out some study on the polymer material fluid loss agent in recent years, these study mainly focused on CMC, HEC, MHEC, CMHEC, starch and its derivatives(Zhang,2005 and Chevron,2009).About PAC (polyanionic cellulose) as drilling mud additives, a few of scholars carried out some relevant work. Plank (1992) applied PAC into ordinary freshwater drilling fluid and analyzed temperature stability of freshwater drilling fluid. Bennion (2000) applied PAC into drilling fluid and analyzed effect of polyanionic cellulose on strata inhibitory. Huang (2011) analyzed effect of PAC on properties of the high-density water-based drilling fluid. Mahto (2004) applied PAC into fresh water and salt-water drilling fluid and analyzed effect of PAC on rheological properties of the drilling fluid. Wang (2008) applied PAC into alkaline drilling fluid to study various performance of drilling fluid. PAC is a renewable resource and has good application prospect (Ankara, 2005). So it is very important to understand the effect of PAC on filtration process of drilling fluid.The test was conducted by changing the content of the PAC in drilling fluid. The object of this paper is to understand effect of polyanionic cellulose on filtration process of the low solid-phase drilling fluid."

The Heights project was located at Fashion Valley North, San Diego, CA. The scope of the project was to replace two existing commercial buildings with a large 7-story multi-family residential building. There was an existing 1:1 slope on the north side of the site. A permanent soil nail wall, 1,000 linear ft long, with a maximum height of 100 ft, was needed to replace the 1:1 slope at the north side of the project to accommodate the development. Previously there was a design for the permanent soil nail wall which required up to 115 ft long soil nails with large diameter rebars and 13 in. thick permanent facing. PB&A was engaged by the owner to conduct soil nail design optimization and value engineering to reduce construction costs and improve scheduling. First, the SnailPlus program was used to check the stability under static and seismic conditions and to design soil nail lengths and sizes. Then, soil nail head forces were calculated to design the permanent facing using FHWA recommended procedure. Another challenge of the project was to evaluate the interaction between a future San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) tower and the soil nail wall. Finite element analyses were conducted with the PLAXIS program to ensure the deflection of the future tower would be within the acceptable range. The soil nail design optimization helped the owner to save approximately $800,000 in construction cost and improved construction scheduling.

A landfill in Phoenix, AZ reached capacity and was graded over in the 1970s. The property was subdivided into lots in 2007 to create a business park. However, the challenging site conditions caused by the underlaying landfill put into question the feasibility of typical deep foundation systems. Several different foundation systems were evaluated to support the proposed development. The considered systems were: drilled concrete shaft, driven piles, drilled micropiles and helical piles. Soil stability, landfill decomposition, method of installation, flexibility of design, anticipated material, and equipment costs were considered. A system of helical piles with concrete pile caps and grade beams was selected. To mitigate unknown obstructions, holes were drilled through the landfill debris at pile locations and then backfilled with screened granular material. The helical piles were installed through these backfilled holes and advanced to bear in competent native material below the landfill. This method allowed for minimal disturbance of the landfill materials and provided a strong and adaptable foundation. Additional advantages of helical piles on this site include minimal installation vibration, no grout or concrete in the deep foundation, and capacity verification for each pile via torque correlation. Two load tests were performed to verify the design.

Currently, more than 400 drilled shafts have been constructed by various contractors at the I-90/94 and I-290 Jane Byrne (Circle) Interchange, located near downtown Chicago, Illinois. Cross-Hole Sonic Logging (CSL) and Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) tests were performed to evaluate the integrity and concrete quality of the drilled shafts installed at this project. For Phase I of the project the shafts were tested using CSL methods, and the shaft integrity was identified by analyzing the First Arrival Time (FAT) and the signal strength (energy) measurements. For the major portion of Phase II, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) accepted TIP testing as a substitute for CSL at the request of the contractors. The CSL testing results indicated 54 percent of the tested shafts had anomalies, and 78 percent of these anomalies were located within the lower three diameters of the shafts. To date, TIP testing results indicated the shaft integrity was as expected and acceptable for the all 34 tested shafts. A review of the testing results and a discussion of the detected anomalies are presented. In addition, a comparison of both TIP and CSL measurements is presented in this paper.
