"Over the last few decades, the emphasis on affordability and reduced cost of ownership has necessitated the development of innovative processes to carry out repairs in aero engine components. Conventional weld and braze repairs have evolved into advanced, sophisticated processes using state of the art knowledge in lasers, robotics and materials technology. This paper illustrates past and present scenarios in an attempt to illustrate progress that has been made in this area. The problems encountered in the past have been detailed along with the solutions that have been developed and commercially implemented to address these issues. Apart from technical progress, this presentation also addresses the progress made in business approaches and in Certification/Regulatory issues surrounding aero engine repair. Progress in Technology Repair technologies have also been the embryo from which new and revolutionary manufacturing technologies have evolved as well. Electron Beam Free Forming and LENS are examples of how a completely new manufacturing concept can evolve what was originally only a process to join metals. The current and future potential of these spin offs is discussed providing examples of application. While several problems have been solved over time with the implementation of advanced repair technologies, the demands of the industry have created new challenges. The paper describes these issues, outlines potential solutions and discusses the future of repair technologies in terms of the far reaching influence it is sure to have in design, manufacturing, maintenance management and life extension. Progress in Business Trends.Business approaches to repair and maintenance have also gone through considerable change with the introduction of ""Power by the Hour"" and other similar arrangements between the companies responsible for engine overhaul and the end-users. Program Based Logistics (PBL) is yet another innovation to provide a win-win situation for the repair service provider and the end user. This paper traces the development of these business initiatives and highlights successful applications. Progress in Repair Certification, Regulatory Issues.Understanding of the issues surrounding certification of repairs has also evolved with time and regulatory issues have been clarified considerably. Procedures for analysis and testing are much clearer and ""Check Lists"" are being drafted for certifying repairs on various engine components. The PMA phenomenon has added yet another dimension to the issues regarding certification and these are discussed as well."

"GENUINE CONCERN for the environment is a built-in attitude of mind. If you do not have it by age 40 you probably never will. Some people speak the jargon of 'environment' and 'ecology' for political reasons, others because it feeds their need and bias toward attitudes of moral indignation or dissent. Others pay lip-service for purely business reasons. Complete reactionaries equate conservationists, ecologists and environmentalists as either 'commies' or 'pinkos'. Their real credo is the old saying, ""Where there's muck there's brass."" Those who have genuine concern for good environment are not only romantics like Thoreau but realists who sense the danger to our planet if human greed is rampant and unchallenged. The cities are in real trouble. Almost 75 per cent of the population already live in and around cities. Even mining men live in cities or bring up their children in the new 'instant' towns. The ecology of cities is the concern of all. Our distinguished guest Stewart Udall, in his book ""The-Quiet Crisis,"" quoted Thoreau in 1859 as having written ""each town should have a miniature wilderness park, a primitive forest of five hundred or a thousand acres where a stick should never be cut for fuel, a common possession forever."" Mr. Udall will be glad to know that this advice was taken in at least one instance known to me. I refer to Stanley Park in Vancouver. It is a primitive forest of 1000 acres right inside our small downtown peninsula. It remains unmanicured. This month we celebrated the completion of a seawall of 4%, miles along its perimeter. The construction of this wonderful walkway started in 1910. We are very, very proud of our park."

"AFTER SPENDING a lifetime in the mining industry it is normal that one should be concerned with the future of his profession, especially if he is directly responsible for the education and formation of future mining engineers. It is not necessary to insist on the importance of mining for Canada and for the entire world to prove the necessity of the Mining Engineer. A statement was made by Zay Jeffries, former vicepresident of General Electric Co., and here I quote: ""Even though minerals without man are of no moment, man would not be man as we know him without minerals ... ""minerals are as essential to the life of social man as food is to man himself"". This certainly expresses magnificently the purpose of the mining profession. These are the reasons why I have accepted to present my views on the future of the Mining Engineer. If I express some concern it is not because I feel that there is any danger for the profession to disappear; men will always respond to a challenge and this can be found in the extraction of minerals as well as in any other field of human endeavour. However, the first big question concerns the competitive position of Canada in the world of mining. To be made available to Canadians and to the rest of the world, all this tremendous potential mineral wealth that our country has been so generously endowed with by nature must be gained from the earth's crust at a competitive cost. Otherwise it will never become ore and will have no value. Let us not forget that although minerals are discovered, mines are not found but are made. So let us be more efficient mine makers. To accomplish this end, it is the duty of the different responsible organizations at all levels - be they governmental, para-governmental, public or private institutions - to do their utmost to assure the profitable development of our mineral wealth. The University has an all-important role to play in preparing all the specialists required by this intricate machine that mining is. All the different disciplines of engineering, health, social and -managerial sciences are needed for the good functioning of the mining industry. Although they are all essential, some will play a more important role as a member of the structure. In this discussion it is the role of the most important member, the mining engineer, who is actually responsible for the extraction of the minerals from the earth's crust that must be established. From this we will then be able to analyse his responsibilities and try to suggest the mining engineering program most suitable to prepare this engineer for his future role."

"The Cohesion Weakening Friction Strengthening (CWFS) is adopted in numerical analysis to capture the observed progressive failure of hard rock pillars. As a case study, pillars at the Elliot Lake mines with width to height ratios of 0.5 to 3 were analyzed in FLAC3D. Pillars with width to height ratios of 0.5 and 1 show a very similar strain softening behavior while with width to height ratios of 2 and especially 3 indicated prolonged strain hardening. The CWFS model successfully captured the mechanism of progressive failure observed in hard rock pillars including initiation of spalling at the corners, progress of spalling towards the centre and formation of hour-glass shaped pillar, and eventually shearing through the width of pillar. Both the CWFS model and site specific empirical formula successfully separated the stable and failed cases in the Elliot Lake mines. While both models are in reasonable agreement for width to height ratios of less than 2, the empirical formula gives increasingly lower strength values for wider pillars which may result in excessively conservative and uneconomical design.INTRODUCTIONPillars are the portion of in situ rock left between the adjacent openings to maintain the stability of excavations. Conditions of equilibrium require that the loads previously carried by the excavated rocks be transferred to the pillars resulting in elevated stresses within the pillar. Hence, prediction of the behavior of pillars under these loads is important for underground design. Determination of the strength of pillars is a classic subject in underground mining. In conventional mining methods such as room and pillar operations, economic incentives point towards higher excavation ratios i.e., leaving smaller pillars between the mined excavations, while safety and stability requirements favor wider stronger pillars. In some mining methods such as caving operations, the problem is even more challenging. On one hand, the whole operation is directly dependent on the proper continuous flow of caved ore between the drawpoints which requires optimizing the spacing between drawpoints and thereby often leaving narrower pillars. On the other hand, the pillars should be wide enough to ensure the safety of mining operation. Both the blockage of drawpoints as a result of wide pillars and uncontrolled failure of narrow pillars can jeopardize the investments and mining operation.Therefore, design of pillar poses a somewhat unique challenge to rock engineers where simple conservative approaches frequently used in other design methods are no longer acceptable. The behavior of pillar under elevated loads should be predicted accurately."

Traditional prospecting and boulder tracing are the two most important field techniques used in exploration for magnesite deposits hosted by sedimentary rocks. Consequently, success depends largely on the prospector's ability to identify magnesite. A density agent called sodium polytungstate (3Na2W04·9WOj'HPJ was successfully used to determine the presence of magnesite in sedimentary carbonate rocks of southeastern British Columbia. A rapid field method was developed and tested. This method permits discrimination between limy dolomites, dolomites, magnesite-bearing dolomites and magnesite-rich rocks.

My paper entitled "Spontaneous Combustion of Coal in Mines;" read some time ago before this Branch, consisted chiefly of extracts from the British Blue Book dealing with the same subject. Fallowing my article, Mr. de Hart submitted a paper dealing with the application of existing methods of working in Alberta to the conditions obtaining in our bituminous mines. I must confess that the perusal of his paper did not enlighten me either as to what might be a method preferable to those in vogue or even to Mr. de Hart's ideas on the subject, nor did the ensuing discussion of Mr. de Hart's paper afford any great clarification of the problem. The outstanding idea, supplied by Mr. Dick, seemed to be that a retreating system could not be employed, as no operator would feel justified in risking the capital necessary to driving to the boundary when the whole might be jeopardized by a fire breaking out in the waste. That a fire would break out in the waste of any adit-level working seemed to be conceded by all, and with that I agree; that an ignited waste could not be safely sealed off by means of stoppings in a coal barrier-pillar appeared to be the contention of Mr. Dick, or perhaps he attributed this idea to the Mines Branch-anyhow, it seemed to loom over the discussion like a miasma. With this aspect I do not agree, as ? reliance is placed wholly on stoppings in the thick seams of South Staffordshire, even in fiery mines. In the thick coal at Exhall colliery, or elsewhere in Warwickshire (34 feet 4 inches) containing hard and soft coal in layers, a fire assuming serious proportions is sealed off. By the way, retreating long-wall methods are employed. In Fifeshire, sealing off fire in the Dysart mine has been accomplished successfully. The seam averages about 20 feet thick.

"The better the information on the rock mass and its fracture system, the better is the basis for any rock mechanical decision that is required during the excavation process. While in conventional tunnelling free view to the tunnel face is available, possibilities are limited for mechanised tunnelling using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). An approach, already formulated in 2005, is used that produces digital photographs through openings in the cutting wheel of a TBM and merges them into a circular three-dimensional image. The 3D image is then used for geometric rock mass characterisation purposes including geological mapping, for example to measure spatial orientations or determine joint spacing. In the paper the basic concept is described together with first results from a pilot test.INTRODUCTIONA three-dimensional image unites digital photographs with spatial information on the objects/surfaces it shows. Since they combine geometric and visual information they are a straightforward source for geometric rock mass analysis and geological mapping. Their obvious benefits among others are: (i) they allow spatial measurements even in inaccessible regions, (ii) they provide objective and reproducible records of the rock mass conditions, and (iii) they increase working safety (Gaich et al. 2004).Pre-requisite for the generation of 3D images is the acquisition of at least two photographs from the region of interest. From the photographs the imaged object surfaces are reconstructed by means of image analysis using methods from photogrammetry (Slama, 1980) and computer vision (Hartley & Zisserman, 2001). "The Red Dog deposit of the western Brooks Range, Alaska was discovered in the 1970s. Two mineralized areas are present, the Main and Hilltop deposits. With indicated and inferred reserves of 77 million tonnes of 17.1% zinc, 5.0% lead and 82 g/ tonne silver, the Main deposit of Red Dog represents one of the world's largest zinc-lead deposit s. Since serious evaluation by Cominco commenced in 1980, a better understanding of deposit geology has been gained through 10 715m of diamond drilling and concurrent geologic, geophysical and geotechnical studies. The Red Dog deposit is of Mississippian to Pennsylvanian or Early Permian age, and straddles a redox transition in fine-grained and chemical sediments of the Red Dog structural sequence.The Main deposit has been modified by regional Mesozoic thrust faulting and isoclinal folding, resulting in complex interrelationships between silica rock, sulphide rock and barite. Multiple lines of evidence suggest the Main deposit contains both a syngenetic stratiform and a replacement component. Ore fluids were probably derived by regional lateral movement of brines through a coarse clastic footwall aquifer, then upwards along block faults to the site of the Red Dog deposit.Historical PerspectiveThe region in the vicinity of the Red Dog deposit (Fig. 1) was first prospected by J. W. Kelley in the late 1880s (Orth, 1967). The first coordinated inland exploration was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1910-1911 and 1923-1926 (Smith, 1913; Smith and Mertie, 1930). The earliest reports of zinc-lead mineralization in the region include reference to samples collected at unknown locales by Eskimo prospectors (Anderson, 1944). In 1955 stratiform pyrite was discovered 19 km west of Red Dog by I.L. Tailleur of the U.S. Geological Survey (Tailleur, 1970). The first reported visit to what is known as Red Dog was by I.L. Tailleur in 1968, who was field checking a colour anomaly noted by B. Baker, a local bush pilot (Tailleur, 1970; Moore et al., 1986) ."

"The Quintette Coal Limited property is located in the northeast coal area of British Columbia.A basic agreement with the Japanese steel industry was executed on January 27, 1981 for the sale of 69.5 million tonnes of Quintette metallurgical coal over a 14.5-year period. This contract period can be extended by five years by mutual agreement. Sale agreements have also been signed for the sale of 19.4 million tonnes of oxidized coal over a 15-year period.Work started on site development in the late summer of 1981, and at present, two of the four eventual pits-the McConkey and Frame-are under development.The pits are currently in a prestripping phase. These pits are notable for the stripping volumes that have to be removed from relatively small pit areas. In order to provide for the required detailed rapid short-range planning of these pits, engineering will be computerized, as will the truck dispatch system.The mining area lies 21.1 km from the plant site by road and the transport of raw coal to the plant is by means of a high-speed conveyor system which has a total length of 13.4 km with a vertical drop of 740 m.The surface plant facility was designed on a modularized basis to facilitate maintenance, and is designed to enable the use of gravity f low of raw coal and heavy media in the plant to minimize the use of pumps.The construction of the plant and mine site facilities is ongoing, and the first coal production is scheduled for early December 1983.IntroductionQuintett e Coal Limited is a Canadian company incorporated in the province of British Columbia in 1971. "The natural and man-made realities on either side of the Atlantic are different. Therefore, a large part of the other side' s knowledge and experience cannot be transferred easily. In the following, the author will attempt to describe some of those developments in the German hard coal industry which may be of particular interest to readers on this side of the Atlantic.The area of the Federal Republic is quite small, especially if compared with a country as large as Canada. On a territory the size of the maritime provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Germany holds coal reserves roughly corresponding to the total Canadian reserves. More than 20 billion tons of hard coal down to a depth of 1500 m, and more than 30 billion ton s of brown coal of lignite are technically and economically extractable acording to current technology.However, not only are Germany's coal resources more concentrated; the country is also densely populated, and there are dense networks of railroads and highways All components of the so-called infra-structure are available everywhere, be it electricity, any machinery or personnel. Public opinion is likely in favour of an increased utilization of coal.The coal industry is well developed through a long evolution covering centuries. As a consequence, there is an effective and intensive cooperation of numerous bodies and institutions concerned with coal mining, from government agencies including the inspectorate to suppliers, trade union s, producing companies, to jointly operated management and research organizations. In the Federal Republic, hard coal is mined in deep mines only, and lignite in general, only from open-cast pits. There is a complete organizational and geographic separation of hard and brown coal in Germany. Because the Federal Republic holds only insignificant mineral oil and very little natural gas deposits, coal is essentially the only and consequently the most valuable source of energy."

"A program of mapping, sampling and testing to determine the potential of the aggregate resources throughout Newfoundland and Labrador was commenced in 1978. A 6-km-wide corridor parallel to all transportation routes was selected as the study area.The study consisted of a preliminary surficial interpretation followed by field mapping and sampling. Granular resources were sampled at a 500-m interval and non-granular materials were sampled at a 1.5- to 2-km interval. Data were gathered on landforms and stratigraphy as well as a field description of the sample and deposit types. Particle-size and lithologic analyses of the samples were also conducted.The locations of samples and deposits were mapped on 1:50,000 topographic base maps and summarized for publication at a 1:250,000 scale. Surficial geology maps were produced at a 1:50,000 scale. A computer program is being developed for the search and retrieval of field data.The first phase of the Inventory of Aggregate Resources program is nearing completion and to date has collected information on approximately 9,500 samples throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This data will be used to provide f or the effective management of these vital non-renewable aggregate resources.The mineral aggregate industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is very competitive, but undercapitalized when compared to other provinces. The demand for aggregates is forecasted to increase to in excess of23 million tons per annum by the year 2002.In terms of over-all mineral production, the extraction of sand, gravel and stone has a significant impact when compared to other minerals in terms of value and tonnage produced.IntroductionThe province of Newfoundland has approximately 18,000 km of coastline. A large proportion of the population lives in coastal communities where, traditionally, beaches have been a major source of construction materials. Beaches have, therefore, often been subjected to overutilization, resulting in erosion of back beach areas or adjacent headlands."

"Falling rock is one of the major causes of serious injuries and deaths in Swedish mines. The research at the Division of Mining and Underground Construction was therefore directed toward controlled blasting in hard intense jointed rock.The project was started with an extensive literature review. Model tests with a new equivalent model material have been initiated to find ways of improving blasting techniques. The result showed that long cracks arise at the perimeter holes when there is a long time delay between adjacent holes. This led to the theoretical development of a new initiation method with ultra short delays (1,5 ms) f or controlled blasting, called ""Cutblasting"".Full-scale tests have been done at LKAB in Malmberget in hard intense jointed magnetite ore. Four different types of perimeter charges have been tested, namely: tube charges, ANFO mixed with plastic beads, detonating cord and linear shaped charges. Three types of initiation of the perimeter holes have been used, conventional (half-second delay detonators), instantaneous and ultra short ""cutblasting initiation"" (1,5 ms delay). The change in rock strength before and after blasting has been studied with bore hole periscope, vibration measurement and ocular observation of the rock surfaces.Thefull-scale tests showed that ""cutblasting"" with detonating cord in the perimeter holes gave the smallest damage to the surrounding rock. A combination of cutblasting initiation and tube charges are anticipated to give an even better result. A new method of controlled blasting using linear-shaped charges has also been tested, however, this charge type needs further development.The full- scale test also showed that the damage which can be seen on the rock surf ace is about the same for different controlled blasting methods but the not-visual-damage zone varies as much as from 0,1 to 0,7 m.A new classification system for controlled blasting regarding the damage to the surrounding rock has been devised."

"In 1993, trials of two innovative applications of liner support involving the replacement of bolts in the ground support system were undertaken at Inco mines. The first trial involved an evaluation of the effect of dynamic loading on mesh-reinforced boltless shotcrete in a sub-level cave mining area on 2400 level at Stobie Mine. The second trial involved an evaluation of the MIROC Mineguard spray-on liner as a replacement for bolts and screen support, or as a replacement for screen support alone, in a topsoil heading of a bulk, VRM (vertical retreat mining) stope on 3240 level at Lower Coleman Mine.In the Stobie Mine trial, an uppers retreat heading was supported using a two-pass system. First, shotcrete was applied 2 inches thick, followed by pinning of mesh screen to the back and walls. A second pass of another 2 inches of shotcrete was then performed. For recovery of the ore zone, a vertical slot was created using a Borepak blind boring machine. The uppers rings were blasted, one or two rings at a time, starting at the slot and retreating out of the heading. During blasting of the production rings, blast monitoring was used to record the ppvs (peak particle velocities). For a series of 5-ring blasts, the maximum ppvs were measured to be 0.4 m/s (16 in./s) with a maximum charge weight per delay of357 kg (800 Ib). Six 5-point convergence measurement stations were set up and after each blast the total rockmass convergence was measured using a tape extensometer. Although a maximum displacement of 100 mm (4 in.) was measured, the shotcrete still managed to provide some support junction. A support damage assessment was also done to try and relate blast vibration to effectiveness of the mesh reinforced shotcrete liner. This trial demonstrated the effect that blasting has, on a support system, and it also demonstrated the necessity of having the mesh reinforcement properly placed within the shotcrete."

"This paper presents the results of structural analyses and full-scale destructive tests conducted on liner plate culverts. The purpose of this work was to establish a design method and evaluate the suitability of using these structures in potential roof-fall areas for a rehabilitation application in lower stress and relaxed mining environments. Field evaluation of the design is currently in progress.Theoretical ultimate resistance functions were established for two different culvert shapes and were found to be representative of their experimental behaviour. The ultimate resistance function was used to determine their plastic behaviour to a rapidly increasing deflection condition, to determine the energy absorption capacity of these structures, and to predict their response to impact loading.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek mine of Falconbridge Limited is located justnorth of Timmins, Ontario. The area under rehabilitation for which this program was developed is the 2600 level of the No. I mine. The problem of effectively securing selected drifts at the 2600 level in NO.1 mine, for access to a high-grade ore block, is key to the economics of the operation. Diamond drill test holes had indicated a loosened rock mass above the 2600 level of about 7.5 m thick in response to the extensive mining operation below this level. This level forms the arbitrary boundary between the No. I and No. 2 mines, and has extensive volumes of cemented rock fill below it and largely untouched ore above it to the 2000 level in the North orebody. The walls at that level were showing relaxed ground conditions typical of de-stress: sub-horizontal joints opening up, and peeling.Due to the ground conditions, the consequent safety risks, the high grade of the ore, the potential production delays, and the likelihood of several phases of rehabilitation, regularly used drift rehabilitation employing rock bolts, cable bolting, or shotcrete was not practical. Two options were deemed possible alternatives to suit these conditions, steel sets with blocking and lagging, and liner plate culverts with backfill. Culverts were chosen."

"Waste recycling is one of the most important challenges of the XXI century. The recycling of wastes is closely related to and bases on the mineral processing. Many mineral processing techniques and equipment are applied in this field. The principles of the characterisation of wastes and design of technologies is rather similar to the classic mineral processing. Nevertheless, the diversity of the wastes and their complex composition and properties, as well as their environmental impact requires a special approach.Solar elements have sandwich structure of glass substrate and cover, as well as a very thin semiconductor layer. CdTe semi-conductor can be recycled by flotation. Within the RESOLVED (LIFE European Framework) R&D project on the recycling of solar elements the surface properties of pure CdTe semiconductor and pure glass were investigated by the measurements of zeta-potential using Zeta PALS Brookhaven instrument at University of Miskolc. Applied surfactants were: potassium ethyl xanthate; the anionic oxhydryl Aero Promoter 825 or Flotinor SM 35; the cationic Armoflote 43 or Armoflote 64, as well as Hostaflot LET (dithiophosphoric acid diethyl ester) and Hostaflot M91 (mercaptobenothiazole). The tested electrolyte was sodium-silicate. Zeta-measurements were carried out in full pH-range. Interfacial interactions were detected and interpreted. The basic results were verified by the flotation kinetic tests.Finally, the flotation technological experiments were carried out at a semi-technical scale using the real obsolete solar elements. The particle size at the liberation degree of 98% was as fine as below 5 µm. A special flotation cell providing the generation and distribution of very fine air bubbles was built. The pre-concentrate for the manufacturing of the test solar module was performed and transported to the BAM Institute (Berlin), the principal co-ordinator of the Project, and then further to the First Solar (USA) where a new panel was manufactured using recycled semi-conductor."
