For the benefit of those who are not familiar with the history of the western Provinces-Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta-as regards our natural resources, a few words of explanation may be in order before taking up the consideration of the Mines Act of 1930. In 1867, The British North America Act was passed by the Imperial Parliament. That Act, which is our constitution, created a union between the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Upper and Lower Canada (now known as Ontario and Quebec respectively) under the name of the Dominion of Canada. Provision was made therein for embracing other parts of Canada from time to time. That portion of Canada which today comprises the Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta and the lands to the north of them, was then known as Ruperts Land and the North West Territory. In the year 1670, King Charles II had granted by Letters Patent to Prince Rupert and his associates, known as ?The Governor & Company of Gentlemen Adventurers of England, Trading into Hudson's Bay?, commonly known as the Hudson's Bay Company, the lands and territories therein described, being roughly all the lands adjacent to and west of Hudson's bay; also the gold and silver to be found or discovered therein and other rights as more fully described in said Letters Patent. The land so granted was called 'Ruperts Land'.

An in situ water sampling device has been developed to measure biologically-available or “labile” metals in natural waters and effluents. The active mechanism involves the use of a polyacrylamide gel layer to quantitatively control metal transfer to a trace-metal-adsorbing, gel-imbedded resin. Because the resin only adsorbs free metal ions (the gel sampler methodology is a kinetic speciation technique), and because metal bioavailability is related to the free-ion activity, the device provides a direct measure of the biological-availability of metals in the environment sampled. The prototype consists of a layer of ion-permeable polyacrylamide gel which separates the solution to be sampled from an ion exchange resin. Because approximately 90% of the polyacrylamide gel is water, mass transport through the gel is diffusion-controlled, and is therefore well defined. Metal ions are rapidly bound by the resin, creating a steep concentration gradient in the gel. The amount of labile trace metal that accumulates on the resin can be related directly to the concentration of the metal in solution, the exposure time and the molecular diffusion coefficient of the labile species. In addition, the passive nature of this device affords it the potential to address many of the limitations presented by conventional sampling methods, such as sample contamination introduced during collection or filtration and changes in trace metal speciation prior to analysis. Laboratory studies and limited field trials indicate that the sampler behaves as anticipated and illustrate that biologically- available metal concentrations in many environments are a small fraction of the total concentrations and often significantly less than the dissolved concentration. The implications of this on regulatory criteria are discussed. Additional field trials and correlation with bioassays are currently underway.

"As part of a study to evaluate factors affecting tankroom air quality, the mechanism of aerosol generation from bursting bubbles in electrowinning operations has been investigated. Typically 2 to 3 mg/m2.s are produced in zinc tankrooms. Analysis shows that the rate of production of film drops (geometric mean diameter - 2 urn] increases with decreasing bubble size, and that jet droplets (geometric mean diameter - 20 um) are not produced with gas bubble larger than - 4 mm. Both mechanisms of drop formation and current efficiency are affected by surface active agents, with an over-all reduction in emission of up to 60% to 70% being achievable. A source control system which does not adversely affect electrolyte properties is always preferred, and coalescence of all gas bubbles in to a continuous stream of gas at a single point on the electrolyte surface would eliminate aerosol emissions. This objective was the basis for design of a coalescence device which, in laboratory tests, reduced the emission rate by over 95%.The control device fit s over the electrodes in the electrowinning cell and is partially immersed in the electrolyte. A number of changes in the design which resulted in significant improvement in the performance of the device are reported.Field tests have shown that only about 75% of the aerosol below 10 um can be eliminated by coalescence. The remainder (up to 95% of the total) is controlled by coalescence of droplets, by impaction on the exposed collector surface and gravitational settling.The device does not interfere with operation of the tankroom, handles the effect of surges in power during harvesting, and is simple and inexpensive to maintain. IntroductionDuring the electrowinning of metals (such as zinc and copper) gases are evolved along the electrode surface forming small bubbles. The bubbles travel upwards and burst on the electrolyte free surface generating, in this way, small droplets. Because the electrolyte is often highly acidic or contains toxic materials, the whole process can result in the formation of an aerosol in the atmosphere above the electrowinning cells which poses a serious health hazard to workers in the area, and corrodes equipment."

"Girth welding operations represent the rate-limiting step in pipeline construction. A joint industry-university program was set up to establish the field welding characteristics of large-diameter, high-strength line pipe.Theoretical work carried out at the University of Waterloo showed that pipe wall thickness and joint misalignment prior to welding has a marked influence on the lifting stresses acting on the root pass of girth welds. Pipe diameter and pipe ovality had negligible effects. Super-position of lifting and residual stress (caused by the fusion welding operation) highlighted regions of the weld bead most susceptible to hydrogen-induced cracking.The field welding characteristics of 1219-mm-diameter, 13.72-mm-wt Grade 483 line pipe were evaluated using a specially designed test rig. The principal test variables were lift height, delay time after root pass deposition, preheat temperature, pipe composition and joint misalignment prior to welding. For any given life, preheat and joint misalignment prior to welding had the most significant effect on cracking tendency.The output of this program has industrial significance and illustrates the beneficial features of university-industry collaboration.IntroductionField welding operations comprise the rate-limiting step during pipeline construction. Crack-free girth welds must be made in a wide range of weather conditions and consequently the field weldability of line pipe compositions directly affects pipeline integrity and construction economics.Pipe-laying practice comprises root bead deposition followed by a skidding operation involving lifting (or lowering) the pipe length onto skid s so that the next pipe length can be aligned prior to welding. Consider pipeline construction using 24.4-m lengths of 1219-mm-diameter , 13.72-mm-wt Grade 483 pipe weighing approximately 10,000 kg. Skidding involves loading a 3-mm-thick root bead by moving the free end of the pipe through vertical distances of up to 700 mm . The likelihood of cracking in these circumstances depends on the inherent crack susceptibility of the pipe composition employed, on the hydrogen content of the deposited weld metal and on how well the joint handles the external stressing caused byskidding."

"A regional till sampling program in the Upsalquitch Forks-Tetagouche Lakes area, centred some 70km west of the city of Bathurst, has proven an effective method for gold exploration in the heavily glaciated interior of northern New Brunswick. Prospecting activities within this area over the past three years, have led to the discovery of several gold occurences associated with quartz-carbonate alteration in a variety of intrusive rock types emplaced along major fault zonesQuaternary mapping shows that the glacial history is complex. However, the displacement of material is uniform in distance and direction, and the till is generally thin (0.5 m to 2.0 m) and locally derived, making the interpretation of till geochemical patterns relatively simple for the explorationist. Previous studies have shown the the fin e-grained gold is best detected in the -250 mesh (-0.063 mm) till fraction (clay plus silt) and that the C-horizon is the preferred medium for analyses.Samples were collected on a 2 km grid and analyzed f or Cu, Pb, Zn, Au, Ag, As, Sb, Mn, Fe, Ni, Co, and Cd. Results indicate that concentrations of 10 to 20 ppb Au can effectively delineate areas of anomalous gold in bedrock associated with fault structures, and that a good potential for discoveries exists to the west of the known occurrences, where up to 678 ppb A u has been detected in tills. IntroductionThis paper reports on the result s of surficial geological investigations conducted over the past two field seasons in north-central New Brunswick. The stud y area is located in the Upsalquitch Forks-Tetagouche Lakes map area s (N.T.S. 21 0 19 and 21 0 (10) 70 km west of the city of Bathurst (Fig. I). The area is situated on the margin of the New Brunswick Highlands and has a maximum elevation of 640 m (for a detailed description of the physiography, see Rampton et al. 1984).Historically, exploration in northern New Brunswick has concentrated on base metals within the Cambro-Ordovician Tetagouche Group, resulting in the discovery of man y significant massive sulphide deposits (Brunswick No.6 and No. 12, Heath Steele, Caribou, Armstrong Brook, Orvan Brook, McMaster, Murray Brook, and Restigouche). Auriferous base metal occurrences along the Rocky Brook-Millstream Fault have also been previously investigated."

"The Donalda gold deposit is located in the southern part of the Noranda camp, approximately 2 /em east of the Horne deposit. Combined past production and current reserves total over 1.5 Mt grading 6.9 grams of gold per tonne.The deposit consists of two main veins which are both narrow but persistent structures. The No 1 Vein, hosting about 80% of the gold ore, consists of an EW-striking banded quartz vein dipping on average 25° to the south. Although variable in thickness, it averages lessthan1 metre. TheNo2 Vein, located 300 m below the No 1 Vein, is similar to it except that it dips 50° south. Gold occurs mostly as fine native gold disseminated in quartz, with 2-3% pyrite and trace amounts of various sulphides and tellurides. The wall rocks are only weakly altered and mineralized with pyrite, hematite and sericite.Structurally, the Donalda deposit is centered on the Horne Creek fault (HCF) where the HCF is intersected by the ENE-trending DonaldaandCentralfaults.NorthoftheHCF,theNo1Veinishosted by the Quemont Rhyolite, whereas south of the HCF the vein is hosted by magnetic basalts and diorites of the Wilco Andesite Formation. The No 1 Vein extends across the HCF with only minor displacement, whereas the No 2 Vein has not yet been traced south of the HCF.A preliminary structural analysis of the mine shows that the HCF, which strikes 275° and dips 70° north in the mine area, has a reverse movement a lid that the flat dipping No 1 Vein is a tension vein. Both probably developed in response to the same stress conditions. Although the absolute age of the Donalda veins is not known, structural relationships indicate that they formed during the latest movements of the HCF, but prior to the intrusion of the Proterozoic D' Eldona Diabase. The occurrence along the HCF of gold-rich synvolcanic massive sulphides and much younger vein-type gold deposits (such as Donalda) indicates that the HCF was a very long-lived, deep-seated (?)structure which has controlled the circulation of gold-rich fluids over a long period of time."

"The seismic hazard for civil engineering structures is generally defined in terms of deterministic or probabilistic acceleration response spectra at an equivalent rock outcropping. The design of tunnels, however, requires the definition of demands in terms of accelerations at ground surface (near the portals) and in terms of both accelerations and velocities at different depths within the alignment. The design near the portals is controlled by inertial effects and is often times impacted by the possibility of slope instability and rockfall, whereas the design at deep sections is controlled by kinematic effects. These effects are accounted for in practice by introducing deformation patterns in the structure that are related to an assumed wavefield, often times ignoring the effect of the structural stiffness in the response. This paper presents a study regarding the definition of seismic demands for different sections of 14-km long tunnel in the Andes (Argentina-Chile), with a maximum overburden of 1750 m in a seismically active region. The tunnel will pass through volcanic massifs mainly composed by andesites and rhyolites.The study includes the definition of spectrum-compatible seismograms, deconvolution, and definition of accelerations and peak particle velocities for different overburden conditions. A kinematic interaction study for a 500-m tall ventilation chimney shaft is also described, where a simple formulation for the interaction analysis is considered in order to more accurately evaluate shear and bending demands. INTRODUCTIONThe seismic design of linear underground structures, such as shafts and tunnels, generally considers the inertial forces near the shallow sectors (e.g., portals) and the kinematically imposed deformations for the deep sections (e.g., Hashash et al. 2001). The inertial forces are often times evaluated on the basis of design spectra recommended by seismic hazard studies. The kinematic demands for the deeper sections, however, needs to be defined in terms of additional information which is not always indicated by the seismic hazard studies, e.g.; peak particle velocities and accelerations, and their variation with depth. These parameters can be determined by means of a site response analysis, whereby outcrop motions can be deconvoluted in order to evaluate motions inside the ground mass (e.g., Schnabel et al., 1972). Hashash et al. (2001) defines factors that may be used in order to account for attenuation of motions inside the ground mass. However, these factors are provided for depths up to 30 m only, whereas depths of tunnels structures can range up to thousands of meters."

"Sink-float analysis is often used to obtain yield-ash and density partition curves in the coal industry. These provide a valuable tool for evaluating the performance of a separation process. However, for dense minerals, obtaining complete grade-recovery and density partition curves is more difficult due to the lack of heavy liquids available with the required densities. This paper examines a potential solution to this problem which is to perform batch fractionation of mineral samples in a laboratory-scale REFLUX™ Classifier using high viscosity fluidising liquids. The REFLUX™ Classifier is a gravity separation unit consisting of a system of parallel inclined channels positioned above a vertical fluidised bed. Operated in semi-batch mode, a charge of particles is fluidised from below and particles up to a certain density are elutriated from the top of the system. The fluidisation rate is then increased incrementally to fractionate the sample at progressively increasing densities. Previous work by Hunter et al. (2014) and Iveson et al. (2015) has shown that this method provides excellent agreement with yield-ash and partition curves for coal, especially when glycerol solutions are used as the fluidising liquid. This approach has now been extended to obtain the grade-recovery and density partition curves of high density mineral samples. This method has the potential to provide the minerals industry with an effective tool to evaluate the performance of unit operations separating at cut points higher than the available heavy liquids.INTRODUCTIONMeasuring efficiency and effectiveness is of key importance in the continuous improvement of mineral processing plants. For density based separation, one way the performance of a process can be evaluated is the measurement of density-based partition curves. Currently, this is done in the coal industry using the sink-float method, where heavy liquids are used to fractionate particles into discrete density intervals. However, with high density minerals such as iron ore, liquids of sufficient density are rare, and in most cases also pose serious health and safety concerns to laboratory operators. Most commercial laboratories do not perform sink-float separations above a density of about 4400 kg/m3, the maximum density of Clerici solution without operating at excessive temperatures (Koroznikova, Klutke, McKnight & Hall, 2007; Rosenblum, 1974)."

"In the present research, a deposited brown coal fly ash was used as raw material for geopolymer. The reactivity of the fly ash was altered using mechanical activation, which is one of the promising methods to improve bulk and surface reactivity. The mechanical activation experiments were carried out in a high energy density mill using 5 m/s circumferential speed, and various residence times (1, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 60 min). The effect of mechanical activation on particle size distribution was measured by a laser particle size analyzer and structural changes using FT-IR. Geopolymer samples were prepared from mechanically activated fly ash with an alkali solution. The progress of geopolymerisation was monitored using an Isothermal Conduction Calorimeter. The heat flow curve obtained indicated that reactions were more prominent and started much earlier in the mechanically activated samples. This observation is further supported by the compressive strength results which also improved in geopolymers using mechanically activated fly ash. Based on the obtained results, it can be inferred that mechanical activation is a possible way to enhance the reactivity of fly ash and consequently properties of resulting geopolymers.INTRODUCTIONCoal fired power plants generate fly ash and slag in huge amount worldwide, about 780 million tons/year (Heidrich et al. 2013). Due to the relatively low utilization rate, enormous quantities of these wastes are landfilled in ponds. The fly ash is the finest grained particle fraction of the solid ash, which is transported with flue gas, and removed by electrostatic or bag filters. The fly ash has pozzolanic activity, it does not react with water, but in the presence of calcium hydroxide solution hardens and solidifies, producing a reaction product practically insoluble in water (Opoczky, 2001). The most important property of the fly ash regarding geopolymerization is its reactivity, which depends on the chemical and phase composition, the dispersity (specific surface area, particle size distribution), and the morphology of the fly ash particles, and determined by the physical properties and chemical composition of the fly ash. Geopolymers concerning their chemical structure are polysialates, where the sialate (silicon-oxoaluminate) network is built up from the bonds of Si-oxide and Al-oxide by sharing oxygen atoms (Davidovits, 1988)."

Introduction This paper, it is hoped, will serve as an introduction to further work upon the origin of the soils and to a more complete interpretation of the geology of Saskatchewan from a study of the soils of the Province. The great difficulty that is encountered in mapping the structure of the prairie regions of the west must be evident to all who have made the attempt. The rarity of good exposures, due to the extensive coverings of glacial drift, is the greatest obstacle, making it difficult to determine the exact stratigraphical position of such exposures as may be found. In many cases palæontological evidence is lacking, or, if available, our present knowledge of the stratigraphy is insufficient to justify division of the formations into horizons; and until many of these formations have been subjected to petrographic investigation, little can be done in using lithological differences as an aid to the correlation of the usually sparse outcrops met with in the Province. Topography may be of the utmost value as an indication of geological structure when considered in conjunction with other evidence. It does not necessarily follow that, because an area in Saskatchewan has resemblances in surface configuration to an area of oil-producing land in Texas, there is sufficient justification for sinking money in wells without further investigation. Such - investigation should include the study of available soil maps.

"Pulang Copper Mine is located in Shangri-La county, Diqing Prefecture, Yunnan Province, with currently defined copper reserve of 4.8 million tonnes of copper metal and an average grade of 0.34% Cu. The mineralized zone in a dome shape is 2,300 m long, 600–800 m wide, and 1,000 m high. At present, the project is at a construction phase, with a first-stage mining and processing capacity of 12.5 million tonnes of ore per year. Ore haulage is planned via a drift and ore pass development system. The cavability of mineralized rock is classified into three types (II, III, IV), with type III accounting for more than 98% of the total reserves. The cavability of the orebody is generally considered to be good and block caving mining method is planned. Semi-autogenous grinding and ball milling are adopted for the mineral processing. The tailing dam construction method is a center-line method.INTRODUCTIONAs the China's largest underground nonferrous mine, Pulang Copper Mine is located in the northeast of Shangri-La County, Diqing Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. It is 62 km northeast of Shangri-La city. Shangri-La County is a Tibetan-dominated, multiple-ethnic region, with a population of approximately 163,000 in 2009. The county is rich in mineral and water resources, thriving with tourism. Its economy is also dominated by agriculture. To date, the defined copper reserves at the Pulang Copper Mine is 4.8 million tonnes of copper metal at an average grade of 0.34% Cu. In addition, it contains a gold reserve of 145 tonnes, a silver reserve of 2,754 tonnes, a molybdenum reserve of 0.19 million tonnes, and a sulphur reserve of 10.5 million tonnes. The first-stage mining and processing capacity is planned at 12.5 million tonnes of ore per year. When it ramps up to this production rate, the mine will produce copper concentrate containing 50,000 tonnes of copper and molybdenum concentrate containing 968 tonnes of molybdenum. A drift and ore pass system is planned for ore haulage and mining method is a block caving method. Semi-autogenous grinding and ball milling are considered for mineral processing. A center line dam is adopted for the tailing dam construction (Feng, 2010; Feng, Li, & Wang, 2011; China Enfi Engineering Corporation, 2014)."

The average grade of copper concentrate is steadily declining, forcing the industry to turn to lower grade and metallurgically challenging orebodies. When faced with a low grade, challenging ore, mining companies are often forced to choose between high recovery at low grade or low recovery at high grade. Hydrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates using metathesis reactions, which replace iron with copper in copper-iron sulphide minerals and increase the copper to sulphur ratio in copper sulphide minerals, provide an opportunity to upgrade copper concentrates and potentially allow high copper recovery for a high grade concentrate. Factors such as concentrate mineralogy, reaction time and temperature, and the concentrations of copper, chloride and acid in solution are reported to affect the reaction extent and mineral phases formed by metathesis. In this paper, a copper concentrate has been studied over a wide range of conditions to investigate the influence of these key parameters on the extent of copper metathesis reactions and product phases formed. Solution and solid phases are assayed with the main mineral phases identified by Quantitative X-Ray Diffraction. INTRODUCTION The minerals present in copper deposits determine the prospective processing options either: pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical. For copper oxide ores, copper is typically present as oxides, carbonate, chlorides, silicates and sulphates. These minerals are readily solubilised in acid and are usually treated through hydrometallurgical processes. The typical process route for copper oxides is to leach copper into aqueous solution, purify and upgrade the solution phase through solvent extraction and then recover copper as metal by electrowinning (Davenport, King, Schlesinger, & Biswas, 2002). Copper sulphide deposits may contain a multitude of copper bearing minerals, including chalcopyrite, bornite, enargite, covellite, digenite and chalcocite. The copper ore grade and treatment options are affected by the mineral type and distribution. Sulphide ores are typically treated through comminution and mineral flotation to form concentrates, followed by pyrometallurgical smelting. Hydrometallurgy can also be used to process sulphides depending on the mineralogy and impurity levels (Davenport et al., 2002). The trend of decreasing copper grade with increasing impurity levels are common across the mining industry and pose future challenges to copper processing. This trend has prompted research into hydrometallurgical options for upgrading copper concentrates. One promising hydrometallurgical option is using metathesis reactions. Metathesis reactions, sometimes also called double replacement or displacement reactions, are chemical processes involving the exchange of bonds between two chemical compounds or species. In this case, the metathesis reactions involve copper in solution exchanging with cations in the solid sulphide concentrate. The driving force for copper sulphide metathesis is the relative affinity of the exchanging cation elements for sulphide. Based on sulphide precipitation diagrams, the expected order of affinity for sulphide should be Hg2+ > Ag+ > Cu+ > Cu2+ > Bi3+ > Cd2+ > Pb2+ > Sn2+ > Zn2+ > Co2+ > Ni2+ > Fe2+ > Mn2+ (Monhemius, 1977). Hence, copper metathesis reactions are capable of increasing copper content and removing impurities such as iron, nickel, zinc and lead from copper concentrates.

As at any other mine in Canada, grade control procedures are used at Steep Rock Iron Mines (1) in order to ensure that concentrator and pellet-plant operator s have a uniform feed so that they can manufacture a pellet to suit buyers' specifications and (2) to maximize ore recovery so that as little as possible finds its way to the waste dump or is downgraded by contamination. At Steep Rock, material grading 40% to 66 % Fe is considered ore. The ore may contain up to 10% sulphur. These ranges create six different stock pile types, with the possibility of more if large concentrations of arsenic are encountered. Although grading and mining techniques used to accomplish these ends are fairly standard, there is an appreciation and willingness by hourly and staff pit personnel to make grade control effective. This produces vertical and horizontal communication, which is necessary for success in this field. At Steep Rock, the waste-to-ore ratio is greater than at any other iron ore mine in Canada. Also, a high percentage of the ore mined is direct pellet feed. For these reasons, .grade control is very important.

New regions of material property space can be accessed by combining microstructural design at the nm-scale with architectural design at the µm- or mm-scale. In the first case, large strength increases associated with grain size reduction to below 50 nm have driven extensive research efforts into the development of nanocrystalline materials [e.g. 1-3]. For many potential structural applications, however, the density of a nanocrystalline material is just as important as its strength. In fact, reducing the density is more important than increasing the strength for certain weight specific materials performance indices, and it is especially critical for applying structural nanomaterials in the aerospace and automotive sectors. We have developed a new type of structural nanomaterial wherein the effective density of the parent metal is reduced by more than an order of magnitude by incorporating an internal periodic cellular architecture of open space. In one example a low density cellular nanocrystalline material was created by electroforming nanocrystalline Ni around a rapid-prototyped acrylic photopolymer microtruss, Figure 1 [4]. Microtruss materials have periodic cellular architectures that are specifically designed to undergo stretching-dominated deformation as opposed to the bending-dominated deformation in conventional open cell metal foams [5,6]. This new cellular nanocrystalline hybrid material combined the structural efficiency of microtruss architectures with the ultra-high strength that can be achieved by grain size reduction to the nm-scale. Although it played a critical role as a cathode support during the initial stages of nanocrystalline electrodeposition, the polymer core did not contribute significantly to the inelastic buckling resistance of the composite metal/polymer struts and it may therefore be desirable to remove it post deposition by means of chemical dissolution or thermal decomposition [4]. Nanocrystalline electrodeposition can also be used to reinforce conventional cellular metals (Figure 2), creating new types of cellular composites such as metal/metal microtruss hybrids [7-10] and metal/metal foam hybrids [11,12]. For example, nanocrystalline Ni-Fe alloy sleeve thicknesses of up to 400 µm were used to reinforce an aluminum alloy microtruss that had been fabricated using a stretch-bend approach; the nanocrystalline sleeves had the effect of increasing the microtruss strength by up to a factor of twelve and the specific strength by a factor of three [8]. Alternatively, much thinner sleeves can be electroplated to produce structural coatings. In one example, a nanocrystalline Ni coating was designed to provide both corrosion protection and inelastic buckling resistance [10]. Because the ultra-high strength material was optimally located at the furthest distance from the neutral bending axis, only a thin coating of 50 µm was needed to double the inelastic buckling resistance of the 1.13 mm x 0.63 mm cross-section plain carbon steel struts [10]. Overall, the mechanical performance increase that can be obtained through electrodeposition depends on a complex interaction between the starting cellular architecture and the nanocrystalline sleeves.

"Sherritt Gordon's experience with rubber mill liners began in 1964 at the Lynn Lake Farley Mine and continued at the Fox Mine in 1960, and the Ruttan Mine in 1973. This paper describes the history of the performance of rubber mill liners at the three mine operations.LYNN LAKE - FARLEY MINEThe Lynn Lake Farley Mine, which ceased production in 1976 due to exhausted ore reserves, was a 3500 T.P.D. copper-nickel operation; consisting of two parallel rod mills followed by three stages of ball mill grinding. A circuit modification in 1964 necessitated one of the tertiary ball mills to be used as a pyrrhotite regrind mill. This 8' x 5' Hardinge conical mill drawing 225 HP was initially installed with steel liners and lifters. After several months of operation a routine inspection revealed severe channeling and washing behind the liners which was threatening to erode the ball mill shell. It was thought that the highly acidic condition in the mill, due to grinding 100 º6 pyrrhotite, was accelerating the wear of the steel liners. At this time it was decided to reline the mill with rubber liners to see if the wear problem could be relieved, and in December 1964 a set of Skega rubber liners were installed."

Introduction The refining of precipitate is the final stage of all the processes involved in gold mining and cyanide milling, by which the precious metal is at last obtained in a concentrated form, which can be accurately valued and marketed. Possibly one ought to say, conveniently shipped, for accuracy in valuation depends in many instances on a toughening treatment given the bars as received at the Mint so as to obtain a homogeneous metal that lends itself to representative sampling; which, of course, entails a surcharge on the regular Mint charges for the extra work necessarily undertaken. There are several methods of refining zinc-gold precipitate, each with its advocates; the method employed depending not always on the quality of the bullion produced but on the local exigencies of the case in point. These methods are more or less detailed in various textbooks and it is not the purpose of this paper to discuss them, but to confine ourselves to the specific case as stated in the title of the paper. At the outset, it behooves the writer to express his thanks to Mr. Brigham, the General Manager of the Hollinger Mines, for the kindly consideration and encouragement given in developing this process. This will be better understood when one considers the immense values involved, tending towards conservatism in practice, and making one chary of radical innovations. This process has been in satisfactory operation now for about two and-a half years, during which time over twenty-five million dollars value in fine gold has been produced, so that it may be reasonably held that the process is successful.

Canada's future in the field of mineral production looks bright, with our resources just starting to be tapped. Outside of the large expanse of Soviet Russia, we are by far the world's most fertile mineral exploration area."

Dust from flue gas cleaning systems at iron and steel production is frequently considered as a waste problem, but it is actually a potential raw material source. By using a technology like the oxyfuel based OXYFINES technique, it can be melted into a suitable form. The product from this processing, however, needs to meet the requirements of a recyclable raw material, here particularly a top-charged blast furnace feed. The present work has been focused on characterization of the product produced from these dusts by OXYFINES technology. The investigation has been carried out on samples of processed dusts from a European integrated steel mill. It was done by means of chemical analysis, density measurement, light optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and micro indention hardness measurement. Special attention was paid to the presence of zinc, an element that might be harmful while recycling the material (e.g., in a blast furnace). The results show that the product contains four different regions with different morphologies and properties in the material, which are discussed in detail. The overall conclusion is that by processing the dusts in this way, a raw material suitable for recycling in a blast furnace can be obtained.

"The copper-molybdenum property of Brenda Mines Limited is located in the Okanagan district of British Columbia, approximately 25 miles west of Kelowna. The Okanagan Valley is a resort and fruit-growing area, and therefore pollution control measures are more stringent than in some remote areas.The Brenda plant began production in April 1970 and is operated at a rate of 24,000 tons per day. The plant site is located at an elevation of 4,800 feet, which is approximately 3,600 feet above the level of Okanagan Lake. The site is in the Okanagan drainage basin.The major consideration in the design of the system was the prohibition of any downstream discharge. It was therefore necessary to redaim as much water as possible and to minimize the addition of fresh water to the system. The maintenance of a water balance is of critical importance.This paper will outline the major design criteria for the systems and the site investigations which were carried out. The design and construction of the facilities will be de-scribed and current operating experience will be outlined."

Carbonate-rich rocks occur at several localities within the Flin Flon volcanic sequence of the eastern Amisk Lake area. The rocks occur in two areas: as a group of small occurrences on islands within Amisk Lake and as two much larger linear belts running parallel to the regional structure east of Amisk Lake. Mineralogically, the rocks consist of talc and Ca-poor ankerite with occasional graphite. Segregation of these minerals and colour variation impart a well-defined planar fabric to the rocks and where the units are fairly continuous (e.g. Mosher Lake), their trend and attitude suggests a concordant relationship to the volcanics. Major and trace analysis of22 samples confirms the presence of two types, with one type being represented in each of the two areas. Most of the elements studied can be used to characterize the two groups, but three elements in particular give a clear separation: Mg, AI and Ni. Recalculation of the major element analyses, on a water and carbonate-f ree basis, indicates that one group (large concordant bodies with high MgO, high Ni and low AI20.J is altered ultrabasic material of peridotitic or dunitic composition. Because no relict igneous material is observed, and the contacts are apparently very sharp, it is possible that the hydration-carbonization process occurred simultaneously with intrusion, .in a closed system. The other group (small occurrences with relatively low MgO, low Ni and high AI203J represents alteration of basaltic rocks. AIthough some analyses suggest the introduction of calcium, as carbonate, along with the volatiles, the major oxides have remained remarkably stable during the alteration process(es).
