"In today’s economy many industries are becoming aware of the need to recover some of the waste heat they create. Industrial processes release, on a global scale, over 100 tera-Joules (i.e. 1014 J) of waste heat annually. The recovery of waste heat can lead to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and it can also provide a financial benefit which can be obtained by converting some of this excess heat to electricity. At McGill, a research program has been initiated so that low grade waste heat (temperature between 100ºC and 300oC) from process off-gases found in pyro-metallurgical industries is captured and concentrated by using heat pipes and then converted to electricity by a mechanical engine. This paper illustrates the 3 C’s process (capture, concentrate and convert waste heat to electricity). It also provides some preliminary experimental data. INTRODUCTIONThe problematic climate change caused by the use of fossil fuels, the rapid depletion of global reserves and the catastrophic consequences of nuclear power generation call for renewable and safe, resources of energy, for both man and the environment. Extensive researches in the production of energy from renewable sources and improvements in efficiency of current technologies can help us to reverse this trend.The greatest advantages of using renewable energies are that they don’t deplete and they also contribute to a green environment. On the other hand the disadvantage of using these resources is that the energy available from renewable sources is much less concentrated than that provided by fossil fuels and nuclear energy. This makes renewable energy less attractive for large scale industrial uses in most cases. A key target for society for the 21st century is the production of energy from renewable sources at a cost that is competitive with fossil fuels. Fossil fuels represent a concentrated form of energy; usually it is referred to as high grade energy. Nonetheless, there is a vast supply of alternative energy. The sun, wind, water and biomass were the first to be explored. While these are all valid options that warrant concerted efforts and large investments, there is another source of energy that typically is produced by manufacturing industries. This energy is often referred to as low grade waste heat. Most of this energy is simply vented to the environment through the stream of off-gases. In the future it will be necessary to capture and convert some of the low grade heat to a valuable form such as electricity if we are to improve on the efficiency of energy usage."

Smelting has been the primary method of treatment for refractory copper sulfide concentrates such as enargite (Cu3AsS4), but the pyrometallurgical processing generates elevated levels of volatile arsenic. The present research investigates a novel hydrometallurgical process of oxidative dissolution of enargite at ambient conditions in the presence of chlorine dioxide (ClO2), a very powerful oxidant generated in solution by the reaction between a strong acid (HCl or H2SO4) and sodium chlorite (NaClO2). The effects of initial oxidant concentration, particle size, agitation speed and temperature on dissolution kinetics and copper extraction were investigated. It was found that a stoichiometric ratio of ClO2:Cu3AsS4 = 9:1 were needed to completely and congruently dissolve the mineral with fast kinetics (<15 minutes) under ambient temperature. The dissolution extent (metal extraction) increases with increasing ClO2 concentration and decreasing particle size of solids, but is not influenced by temperature or agitation speed.

The influence of the reducing power of the gases, on the swelling behaviour of pellets has been documented. Under the different reducing conditions, this new type of pellets exhibit properties similar to the ones obtained using bentonite."

"Audrey Resources' Mobrun Mine is located in Dufresnoy Township some 30 km to the northeast of Rouyn-Noranda. The Mobrun tine deposits consist of two major massive sulphide lenses; the newly discovered 1100 lens located 450 m south of the Main zone, and one ntellite lens, the 850-870-930 complex.The 1100 lens is hosted in a large pyroclastic unit bounded to the mouth by rhyolite and andesite flows and by a thick rhyolite unit to the art h. stratigraphically belon the three lenses. It consists of approximately 15 Mt of massive sulphide, of which 10.4 Mt are of economic ade. The Main lens lies comformably above thick rhyolite flows, ecciated and pyritized by the sulphide horizon, and is overlain by ttercalated ash tuffs and rhyolites which host the over-lying satellite ns. The Main lens consists of 3,3 Mt of massive sulphide, of which 523 000 tgrade0.80% Cu, 2.44%Zn,30.19 g/t Ag, and2.2 g/t Au he richer satellite lens (180 000 t) is part of the same volcanic stem and resulted from a resurgence of hydrothermal activity. ructure played a role in the final geometry of the deposits but did not eatly affect the volcanogenic and stratabound nature of the lens. Metal price is among the key variables in the open pit optimization and the economic evaluation process. The common approach to handle metal prices in open pit mine planning is to optimize the ultimate pit and the mining schedules using a fixed, flat metal price. In this respect, metal price is assumed to be known with certainty throughout the entire mine life, which in some cases can reach 80 years. Given the volatile nature of metal markets and the metal price cycles, the conventional pit optimization approach may generate sub-optimized mining plans, which results in either extra costs to mining projects or lost revenues, or both. Long-term operational decisions such as future pit expansions, beyond the currently optimized limits, cannot be handled using the pit optimization approach based on flat metal prices. There is a growing interest in the mining industry to model and manage such market uncertainty in the pit optimization as well as the project evaluations in order to maximize the value of mining operations. In this paper, the author will outline a practical approach to optimize the ultimate pit taking into account the volatility and variability of metal markets. The proposed approach uses a combination of the pit optimizer of the commercial MineSight package and a simulation-based economic modeling real options valuation approach employing the least-squares Monte Carlo algorithm. MineSight pit optimizer employs both the floating cone for initial optimization exercise and the standard Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm. In this paper, Lerchs-Grossmann option will be used to generate the pit shells. Real options valuation approach used in this study is based on generating multiple metal price scenarios. Metal price uncertainty is modeled using stochastic metal price models such as the geometric Brownian motion and the mean-reverting process. The mining operational scenarios corresponding to the simulated metal prices are then optimized using the least-square Monte Carlo approach. The objective is to maximize the discounted cash flow value of the project while incorporating the operating flexibility to revise the operating status of the open pit with time as new information becomes available. The focus of this work is on the practicality of the proposed uncertainty-based pit optimization approach and the difference it can make to the technical operational mining decisions. A case study of a hypothetical open pit poly-metallic mine is provided. The deposit contains copper, gold and silver grades. The run of mine ore is sent to the process plant that produces copper concentrate with copper as the main metal and gold and silver as the by-products. Four uncertain variables are considered here include copper, gold, silver prices and foreign exchange rate. Both copper price and exchange rate are modeled using the mean-reverting process while gold and silver prices are modeled using the geometric Brownian motion. The case study is performed using both the conventional flat price pit optimization approach and the proposed uncertainty-based one to compare results.

Introduction The Kirkland Lake (Ontario) property of Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Limited, - consists of four claims. The two main shear zones or &apos;breaks&apos; of the Kirkland Lake camp extend through three of these claims, for a distance of approximately 3,500 feet. These claims are on the northeast side of the original lake. The water in this section of the lake has now been replaced with mill tailings. The degree of success of any completed undertaking, especially in the mining industry, reflects the personnel involved. I state with pleasure that the successful deepening of No. 5 winze from 6,400 feet to 7,272 feet was largely due to the co-operation and skilled workmanship of Shaft Captain J. Myelde and his efficient &apos;leaders&apos;. This winze was sunk at a time when it was most difficult to obtain experienced shaftmen, with the result that the crews did not wholly consist of experienced men (although their desire to learn shaft sinking soon gave good results). This condition added greatly to the responsibilities and duties of those in charge, whose first consideration was for the safety of those engaged in the work, and I take great pride in recording that the entire sinking programme was completed without a lost-time accident. Location of Winze Due to the information obtained through deep diamond-drill holes collared below the 6,000-foot level being of sufficient importance to warrant further exploration, it was decided to deepen the existing No. 5 winze rather than sink another winze. This decision meant that the sinking must be co-ordinated with and proceed simultaneously with operations in the winze, where mining was being carried on between the 3,900-foot and 5,100-foot horizons, inclusive.

THE object of this paper is to present the various facts that l1ave been revealed during lengthy investigations into the performance of all types of ropes on different hoisting installations. It then goes on to suggest means by which most of these findings could be usefully employed to obtain more economical rope lives with increased safety. "Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy Throughout the history of Nova Scotia, trends in the production and use of its coal resources have resulted in major impacts on the economy and society of the province. Current trends in coal demand locally, nationally and internationally are having and will have an increasing positive effect on Nova Scotia over the next twenty years-in terms of energy supply, job creation and general economic development. Coal for electrical generation is an immediate and key objective of Nova Scotia&apos;s energy plan; and, in the long term, coal-derived fuels will meet the province&apos;s needs for transportation fuels. Demand for metallurgical coal is also expected to increase, especially if the merchant coke plant currently under investigation becomes a reality.Meeting these coal supply and utilization objectives in the face of increasing environmental, social and economic constraints poses a tremendous technical challenge. Work has begun on projects to expand coal production capacity and to adapt new technologies for coal preparation and utilization to the specific needs of Nova Scotia; much more work will be required in the coming decade in order to succesfully tap this resource.IntroductionThe energy problem facing Atlantic Canada has a few unique features not found in the rest of the country. Canada, as a whole, has access to a diverse mix of energy resources, including crude oil, natural gas, coal, hydro and uranium, with the result that crude oil supplies only about 40 per cent of Canada&apos;s primary demand. In contrast, foreign crude oil dominates Atlantic Canada&apos;s energy mix, supplying over 70 per cent of the primary energy demand.This results in important differences in various sectors. Nationally, about 5 per cent of the electricity is generated from oil whereas last year in Nova Scotia approximately 40 per cent of the electricity generated was from imported oil. Residential, commercial and industrial space heating, and industrial process heating in Atlantic Canada was almost 100 percent dependent on foreign oil. This is in sharp contrast to the situation in central and western Canada, which have access to secure domestic natural gas, oil and hydro electricity."

It is well known that the refinement of grain size in metals leads to a significant improvement in important mechanical properties. As part of a European collaborative project, processing schedules have been investigated aimed at producing a homogeneous ultra-fine ferrite and spheroidised carbide aggregate microstructure structure in high carbon (CMn) steels (0.6-1.2wt%C), via conventional &apos;warm&apos; rolling and innovative Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE). Suitable deformation schedules were determined from dilatometry and thermo-mechanical Gleeble simulations. Evidence of an ultra-fine ferrite and carbide aggregate microstructure following &apos;warm&apos; rolling is given. A significant improvement in tensile strength, particularly proof stress (0.2%) was also noted in comparison to material deformed at higher temperatures. Concurrent Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE) experiments investigated microstructural evolution with incremental strain. Extensive analysis was carried out using various techniques, including high resolution Electron Back Scattered Diffraction (EBSD). Evidence of ferrite grain refinement was noted in a eutectoid composition steel. A sub-micron ferrite structure was observed following high strains (E-3.33) and the mechanical properties exhibit a marked increase in tensile strength.

"P.T. Freeport Indonesia's lrian Jaya Operation has been producing copper concentrate continuously since 1972. Numerous ore discoveries and five mill expansion programs have seen the initial milling rate of 7,200 MTPD escalate to the present rate of 125,000 MTPD, producing 2.5 million pounds of copper and 3,500 troy ounces of gold per day. The latest expansion, commissioned in February 1995, incorporates a 34 foot Semi- Autogenous Grinding (SAG) Mill, two 20'x30' Ball Mills, conventional roughing, cleaner column flotation, and attendant upgrades to the existing concentrate pumping and dewatering facilities. This paper will describe the SAG Plant flowsheet, and focus on the key training issues which contributed to a successful plant start-up.IntroductionP.T. Freeport Indonesia's operations in the Ertsberg mining district are located in the Jayawijaya Mountains of Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the Republic of Indonesia. P.T. Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), the operator, is owned by Freeport MacMoRan Copper and Gold (81.3%), the Government of Indonesia (9.4%), and private Indonesian investors (9.4%). Geographical location, and sailing distances are provided on the attached location map.The operation stretches over 7 4 miles ( 114 km) from the dewatering and concentrate shipping facility at the Port of Amamapare on the Arafura Sea to the Grasberg open pit located at 3400m. The regional geology is covered in detail by Van Nort et al (1991 ), with current proven and probable reserves estimated at 1.13 billion metric tonnes grading 1.30% Copper, 1.42 ppm Gold, and 4.06 ppm Silver. The Grasberg open pit mining operation provides 92% of the mill feed, and is described in detail by Hickson (1991). The remainder of the mill feed is derived from several underground block caving operations. Current production rates provide a mine life in excess of 25 years. However, very favorable geology in the area leads to expectations that additional reserves will extend the life of the operation considerably."

Introduction The usual laboratory methods of uranium analysis are either tedious, time-consuming chemical procedures or elaborate physical methods requiring sensitive equipment. There is thus an urgent need for a method of estimating the uranium content of ore samples by approximate analysis in the field. When a new property is being developed, it is desirable to know, with the least possible delay, the uranium content of channel samples in order to guide the diamond drilling and digging operations. Prospectors, too, require approximate analyses of their hand specimens to evaluate their discoveries. To satisfy the demand for these types of analyses, several field procedures have been tried. Two general plans can be followed. One is fast but will yield only a rough estimate. The other is slightly longer but, if done carefully, will give an assay probably within 10 per cent of the true value. For field operation it is necessary to strip the more accurate laboratory methods of analysis of all refinements because of the limited equipment and skilled techniques at hand. Most of the corrections normally applied, with the exception of that for equilibrium, will not alter the gross analysis to any appreciable extent. When uranium atoms in pitchblende disintegrate, they break down into other radioactive elements, and eventually the number of elements being formed is equal to the number breaking down. The ore is then said to be in equilibrium. Certain geological processes, however, such as leaching, may selectively remove some of these elements and hence reduce the radioactivity of the ore sample. The ore is then said to be out of equilibrium. The field analysis may then be in error by as much as 50 per cent since the apparatus is calibrated with standards that are in equilibrium. However, such a large error due to loss of equilibrium is the exception, and in most cases uncorrected field types of analyr.is are justified.

Anode casting has been in operation for two years in Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting&apos;s Flin Flon smelter. The new plant allows all casting to be done on one shift and so achieves considerable labour savings. The equipment and operations are described. Some important features are as follows: very consistent anode weights by the use of the load-cell controlled casting ladle; excellent mould life ; very low reject rate; and trouble-free take -off tower. Some of the start-up problems are described and an outline is given of the main operator functions. Data on labour, propane and maintenance costs are presented.

Introduction In presenting this paper on the water-power resources of the Province of Manitoba, it was considered that a brief resume of the power resources of Canada, of the power already developed, and its utilization in the industries 9f the country, would be of particular interest in showing the rapid progress that has already been made. Amongst Canada&apos;s national assets, water power occupies a foremost place because of the facilities it provides for the development of her other great natural resources. The rapid development of the mining, pulp and paper, and general manufacturing industries, and the concomitant growth in urbanization, with its numerous demands for domestic, commercial, and municipal service power, have combined to stimulate hydraulic development to a point surpassing even the most sanguine predictions of a few years ago. With the bringing into operation during 1928 of hydraulic turbines aggregating over 550,300 h.p., and of a further 378,400 h.p. in 1929, Canada&apos;s total hydraulic development at the end of 1929 amounted to over 5,700,000 h.p., and in this year, 1930, the active construction in hydro-electric plants throughout the country totals in excess of 1,600,000 h .p.

"Smelting of copper-gold ore from nearby Rossland mines started at Trail in the 1890s. As ore from the Rossland mines became exhausted, lead smelting of hand-sorted galena ore from other British Columbia mines was initiated. With the development of flotation technology for the separation of lead, zinc, and iron sulphides in the first two decades of this century, the large Sullivan orebody at Kimberley, British Columbia, became the f oundation for the growth of a major zinc and lead smelter at Trail. Lead smelting began in 1901, electrolytic zinc in 1916, and by 1984, the Trail metallurgical complex had produced 10 million tons of each metal. Its present capacity is 270000 tonnes per year of zinc and 110 000 tonnes/year of lead.This paper reviews the history of technological changes in the Trail production plants, emphasizing the zinc plant modernization program started in the 1970s, and also the planned introduction of the QSL oxygen lead smelting process in the late 1980s. Lead modernization will increase production capacity to a maximum of 160000 tonnes per year.IntroductionCopper-gold ore was discovered at Rossland, British Columbia, in the year 1890, starting a mining industry that was to last over three decade s. This little smelter was to develop and diversify in the next 90 years into the world &apos;s largest lead-zinc producer).The mining boom that occurred in the northwestern United States and southeastern British Columbia in the period of 1890 to 1910 saw the brief operation of many small local smelters. The only one to survive was the smelter at Trail. The circumstances that permitted its continued life and subsequent growth, form a fascinating history of business deals, litigation, andsteady technical progress.Early investment in local railway transportation and options by F.A. Heinze, the smelter&apos; s founder, attracted the attention of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, which purchased Heinze&apos; s assets in 1898. This provided the capital base for survival and growth of the smelter, which remained and prospered under the Canadian Pacific umbrella for almost ninety years. It was registered as the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited in 1906; in 1966, this name wasshortened to Cominco Ltd.The Rossland mines continued to supply copper ore for the smelter until the late 1920s, but lead-silver ore also became available from the contemporary mining boom in the Slocan area, about 80 km away. In 1901, the Trail smelter diversified into lead; and when the CM&S Co. acquired the St. Eugene Mine at Moyie and the Sullivan Mine at Kimberley, the smelter was guaranteed a firm supply of lead ore. The company also purchased the West Kootenay Power and Light Company, which even before the turn of the century had constructed the first of four hydroelectric generating plants on the Kootenay River near Trail. This acquisition assured the CM&S smelter and its local mines of a stable power supply and the opportunity to diversify into power intensive technology."

Proper calibration of portable gammaray spectrometers and spectrometric logging equipment is essential if they are to be used for accurate quantitative determinations of radioelement concentrations. In the case of both types of equipment, it is necessary to determine the system calibration constants (stripping factors and sensitivities). In the case of borehole logging equipment, it is further necessary to determine the system response characteristics if the data are to be computer processed to improve the accuracy and resolution of the logs. Facilities are now available near Ottawa for the complete calibration of portable gamma-ray spectrometers and spectrometric logging equipment, in addition to already existing facilities for calibrating airborne gamma-ray spectrometers. Limited additional facilities are also available or planned in several other areas of Canada.

"Quebec Cartier Mining Company is currently mining a low-grade iron ore deposit in northeastern Quebec. The Company is producing some 8,000,000 dry gross tons of concentrates per year, grading about 66 per cent iron. The pit, which is located on the keel or hinge line of a fold, will eventually be about 1,000 feet deep with a surface area of 8,000 by 2,600 feet. The most significant structural discontinuities in the mine are the natural bedding planes and secondary perpendicular joints. The exposed walls are subjected to a sub-Arctic climate and heavy blasting occurs approximately six times a month.QCM utilizes design and operating techniques to control rock fall. Steps are also being taken to analyze the ultimate over-all pit slope stability."

"Using the calculated (Thermo-Calc software) and experimental methods (SEM, TEM, EMPA, DSC, XRD, etc.) the phase composition, structure and hardening of aluminium alloys of the Al-Ca-Zn-Mg system were studied in the following range: 2. 5%Mg, up to 10% Ca, and up to 14% Zn (wt%). Fragments of this quaternary phase diagram in the aluminium corner were constructed, including the liquidus surface, as well as some vertical sections. It was shown that the relatively large amount of zinc enters in the Ca-containing phase, which formula can be described as (Al,Zn)4Ca. An increase of Zn content leads to formation of Al4Ca primary crystals at lower concentrations of calcium. The eutectic (Al)+(Al,Zn)4Ca has a fine structure and aluminide particles are capable to spheroidization during the heat treatment at temperature 500 C. The maximal level of hardness observed on calcium containing alloys was higher than 200 HV, what gives the reason to expect good strength properties. With an example of an Al-9% Zn-2,5%Mg-3,5% Ca model experimental alloy based on the (Al)+(Al,Zn)4Ca eutectic, a principal possibility of manufacturing thin rolled sheets was demonstrated.INTRODUCTION Aluminum alloyed with calcium was first studied in 1970-80s by such authors as Piatti (1976), Moore (1978, 1980), Il'enko (1985), Swaminathan (1990), and Perez-Prado (1997) as superplastic materials. In particular, the alloy systems Al-Ca-Zn were studied (Il'enko, 1985, Swaminathan, 1990, Perez-Prado, 1997). For some time there was no new published works concerning the aluminum-calcium alloys. During the last years many works were published dedicated to the calcium alloying of magnesium alloys (Kim, 2011; Xu, 2011; Aljarrah, 2008; Bakhsheshi, 2014). This urged the authors (Belov, Naumova & Akopyan, 2016) to start studying cast and wrought aluminum-calcium alloys for construction (2008–2014). There is almost no information in the literature concerning triple and more complex diagrams of the aluminum-based system states with calcium and other elements. In recent work, parts of the state diagrams are plotted for the aluminum angle zone: Al-Ca-Mg-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Bazlova, 2016), Al-Ca-Ni-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Bazlova, 2017), Al-Ca-Si-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Akopyan, 2017) and others. Special attention was paid to the study of the system Al-Ca-Zn-Mg (Naumova, 2017). Based on this system creation of advanced extra-high tensile alloys is planned. Wrought extra-high tensile alloys series 7??? based on the system Al-Zn-Mg-Cu are well studied."

In this article, the technologies, production and development trend of Al2O3-SiC-C bricks for torpedo cars in China are reviewed, the current application situation and main requirements for the Al2O3-SiC-C bricks are also addressed.
