The southwest wall of the Lornex Pit at the Highland Valley Copper mine has been experiencing slope displacements since 1978. Measures to manage the displacements on previous pushbacks have included stepping out, scheduling pushbacks to unload the crest of unstable areas, slope dewatering and mining with intensive slope monitoring. The final pushback on this wall is currently being mined and substantial modifications to the slope geometry could prove to be uneconomical. As a result, a campaign of surface water collection and diversion, horizontal drainhole drilling and deep well drilling is currently underway to maintain an acceptable degree of stability to the end of mine life. The various factors contributing to instability, including engineering geologic controls, rock mass strength, and surface and groundwater hydrology are presented. Movement trends, displacement magnitudes and stability analyses results are also discussed.

Broad band mine communication traditionally is characterized mainly by individual solutions, which have in common their long development phases and their high cost for development, operation and service. The use of Ethernet and the TCP/IP family of standardized protocols provide an uniquely price efficient combination of high bandwidth open networking, universal use and accessibility of price efficient development tools, especially because it forms the technical infrastructure for the worldwide Internet. TCP/IP and Ethernet assures reliable networking however it is not able to guarantee the latency timing of forwarding network information. Therefore, the network design requires strict load limitation and application level traffic control especially if moving equipment has to be manually remotely controlled via the network. The paper discusses the technologies the application of Ethernet and WLAN in underground mining environments.

Failure of drainage works is one of the principal threats to the sustainability of mine closure facilities but the risk can largely be remedied by appropriate design of mine closure drainage facilities. The feasibility of sustainable mine closure facilities that avoid failure of drainage systems needs to be established during the early stages of mine planning, before mine disturbances make sustainable closure uneconomical. Experience in mine development shows there is often enough latitude in mine plan development to incorporate measures with neutral economic consequence and positive environmental benefit. Project managers need to resist the temptation to develop mine plans and closure drainage plans independently. Integrated mine planning with effective inputs by environmental specialists and drainage designers may affect the overall mine configuration, footprint and schedule. Key issues pertain to the end pit location, waste dump configurations, pit infill elevations, fluid impoundments, diversion channel routing and preservation of flows to receiving waters. Guidelines with illustrations of suitable practices are presented to assist mine planners.

"This paper examines test results and grinding mill design for the recent Fortune Minerals’ NICO Project, located in the Northwest Territories. SAG milling and rod milling options are compared. Rod milling is clearly shown to be the best option because of the ore’s extreme resistance to breakage in a SAG mill environment.Surprisingly, the Bond Ball Mill Wi was 13 kWh/t for this ore. The Bond Rod Mill Wi was 20 kWh/t, whereas the SAG pinion energy to grind the ore to T80 1.7 mm was 30 kWh/t. The existence of ore with this ratio of SAG hardness to Bond BM Wi has not been previously observed. If not considered, this critical relationship may adversely impact the accuracy of mill design. This paper substantiates the significance of these findings to achieve successful grinding design on ore that is macro-competent during primary size reduction, but relatively normal during secondary grinding.INTRODUCTIONThe NICO Cobalt-Gold-Bismuth-Copper deposit is located 160 km northwest of the City of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. It is the largest IOCG-type deposit (aka Olympic Dam-type) currently recognized in Canada with Mineral Reserves of 21.8 million tonnes contained within a larger 57 million tonne, lower-grade Mineral Resource. The project, owned 100% by Fortune Minerals Limited, has been assessed in a positive definitive feasibility study, subject to underground test mining and pilot plant testing, and is now in the permitting stage to develop a combined open pit and underground mine and process plant. An updated process flow sheet incorporates conventional crushing, grinding and bulk flotation, followed by filtration for shipment of a concentrate to a purpose-built refinery proposed to be built near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. At the refinery, separate bismuth and cobalt concentrates will be produced following regrinding. The hydrometallurgical process methods include: pressure acid leach, precipitation, ion exchange, and electro-winning for recovery of cobalt as 99.8% cathode; solvent extraction and electro-winning of by-product copper cathode; ferric chloride leach and electro-winning for recovery of bismuth as 99.5% cathode; and cyanidation of the leach residues for recovery of gold as doré."

"When it comes to new mines being developed, there is a general industry consensus that most low-hanging fruit has been picked. Many projects currently in the mine development pipeline have been around for decades, but were held back because of technical challenges. Future development of these deposits will likely require access to the public capital markets, and in Canada that means providing scientific and technical disclosure on these deposits in compliance with NI 43-101. As many of these “challenged” projects have metallurgical issues, the companies that own the projects need to ensure their metallurgical Qualified Persons provide transparent disclosure regarding proposed solutions to those issues.This paper provides an overview of the disclosure requirements under NI 43-101 that are pertinent to metallurgists, and other Qualified Persons who prepare technical disclosure regarding the metallurgical characteristics of a mineral project. It lists the triggers for a technical report under NI 43-101 and Canadian stock exchange policies, and identifies the sections of the report that should involve input from a metallurgist or process engineer. "Production commenced at the Golden Sunlight Mine in 1983 and at Kidston Gold Mine in 1985. These projects were both constructed under the management of the Placer Dome Inc. (Technical Services) group of Vancouver, B.C.Golden Sunlight uses a conventional rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit while Kidston uses a SAG /ball mill, and later on, SABC circuit. Since the hardness of the ore and the fineness of the primary grind in both mines are about the same, a meaningful cost comparison can be made. The comparison is made on the basis of capital and operating costs.The result of this study indicates that a significant capital cost savings can be achieved in favour of the SAG /ball mill circuit when the ore is amenable to semi-autogenous grinding. With a good maintenance program, the operating cost for the SAG /ball mill circuit could also be lower that the conventional rod mill/ball mill circuit.HISTORYGolden Sunlight MineGolden Sunlight is a 5 530 t/d gold mine located near Whitehall, a small town 60 km east of Butte, Montana. Originally optioned by PDI U.S. in 1958, the development of the property waited until 1981 when economic conditions became favorable for the project to proceed.Semiautogenous grinding tests were conducted during the final stages of the feasibility study. The hard near surface ore was not quite amenable to semi-autogenous grinding. The best result produced from a series of tests using a 1.83 m diameter mill was a semiautogenous work index of 39. This is substantially higher than the 22 Bond work index of the sample used in the testwork. A conventional SAG/ball mill circuit for this ore will be extremely inefficient, and for this reason, this circuit was rejected in favour of a conventional rod mill/ball mill circuit."

Reliable measurement and control of the pulp-froth interface (froth depth) in the flotation columns is critical to achieve the desired metallurgical performance. Shallow froths result in a reduction of grade because of particle entrainment and deep froths reduce recovery because of the drop back of entrained and weak hydrophobic particles to the pulp zone. The cleaner circuit at Miduk copper concentrator consists of three parallel MicrocelTM flotation columns 4 m in diameter and 12 m in height. The interface level of the flotation columns is measured by two pressure sensors located at 1.4 and 2.4 m from the cell lip (in the collection zone). In this study the performance of the level detection system at different operating conditions was evaluated. A calibrated float-ultrasonic location system was used for measuring the actual froth depth. The results indicated that the existing level control system was subject to considerable error. The absolute error was found to be 33.27 cm. This was mainly attributed to the constant set-point value assigned to the froth density (ρf=0.3 g/cm3), which actually varies with the operating conditions. The actual froth density at different conditions was calculated and its average value (ρf=0.12 g/cm3) was re-set in the control system. This resulted in substantial reduction in the level-detecting error. Recommendations for more accurate measurement of the interface level were presented. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a complicated process because of many involved variables. One of the most significant controlled variables in the flotation process is the pulp-froth interface (froth depth). The froth depth has a profound influence on the metallurgical performance parameters (i.e. grade and recovery). Shallow froths result in grade reduction because of particle entrainment and deep froths reduce recovery resulted from the drop back of entrained and weak hydrophobic particles to the pulp zone (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Various techniques have been developed for measuring the interface level of the flotation cells in the last few decades. These techniques can be classified as: Techniques based on hydrostatic pressure measurements (Finch & Dobby, 1990), Techniques based on the density gradient (float) (Moys & Finch, 1988), Techniques based on conductivity measurements (Uribe-Salas, 1991), Techniques based on temperature measurements (Moys & Finch, 1989).

Due to difficulties associated with gripping in direct tension, indirect methods are commonly used to measure rock tensile strength. In this work, we adopt an innovative indirect tensile test method: Semi-Circular Bend (SCB) to measure the tensile/flexural strength of Laurentian granite (LG). The static tests are carried out with a servo-controlled material testing machine and the dynamic tests are conduced with a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system. Pulse shaping technique is adopted to achieve dynamic force equilibrium in SHPB to facilitate data regression. Finite element method is used to relate the failure load to the tensile strength. Strong rate dependence of the tensile strength is observed. The flexural strength is higher than the tensile strength measured using Brazilian Disc (BD). This difference is rationalized using the non-local theory. To further validate the method, a coupled Finite element/Discrete element method (Fem/Dem) in conjunction with the smeared crack model is utilized to simulate the fracture process during dynamic SCB tests. The resulting fracture patterns are qualitatively consistent with those from recovered samples. Both the experimental and numerical methods have validated the results and this new method is readily to be used for other rocks and other brittle materials.

The BGMR has developed a method for an online-analysis during drilling processes in cooperation with Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology in Aachen and various industrial partners. This allows for efficient utilization of deposits, maximum recovery of desired minerals and frequent and costefficient updates of deposit models. The used method, namely laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), was implemented into a compact demonstrator in order to analyze drill dust and loosened material within mining environments and directly on drill rigs. The consequently developed OFURanalyzer (OFUR ? online-analysis of mineral deposits) provides possibilities for exploration and visualization of deposit models in real-time and thus creates an opportunity for innovative applications, such as contactless, continuous quality control of minerals throughout the extraction process. A major challenge in the execution of this project was the necessity to develop a laser system that could withstand rough mining environments dominated by dust, shocks, vibration and therefore would be suited to operate under such conditions.

Suncor Oil Sands employs delayed coking technology in converting bitumen into synthetic crude oil. Currently up to 10,000 m3 of delayed coke (coke) is produced per day as a byproduct of the upgrading process, of which up to 9,000 m3 per day is placed in dry storage on Lease 86/17. A review was completed to examine the case history of leachate potential experiments from the dry storage of coke and the environmental relevance of coke leachate studies conducted over the past decade. The review included an evaluation of the potential impacts of environmental conditions within the location of coke storage, including precipitation pH, as well as daily and annual ozone trends. Coke leachate potential has historically been characterized using standard leachate testing protocols (i.e., TLCP, SPLP) together with other studies that have employed strong acids and oxidizing agents in the extraction fluids. The present paper highlights prevailing conditions in the Athabasca Valley air-shed with emphasis given to ambient ozone (oxidizers), as well as precipitation pH and acid input deposition rates, and will demonstrate that TCLP / SPLP tests lack the intended environmental relevance relative to the conditions under which coke is stored.

"The initial metallurgical response of the lead flotation circuit at Cominco Alaska's Red Dog Mine was substantially below feasibility expectations. A program of diagnostic mineralogical analysis pointed the way to a number of process improvements, including simplification of the flow sheet and installation of a large flotation column as a lead cleaner. A diagnostic mineralogical analysis of the improved circuit shows that inadvertent activation of both sphalerite and pyrite has been substantially reduced, resulting in significant improvements in metallurgical performance. Directions for further improvements to the circuit performance are suggested by the recent analysis.IntroductionRed Dog is a high-grade, sedimentary exhalative (sedex) deposit with relatively simple mineralogy. The primary non-sulphide gangue minerals are quartz and barite, with minor barium carbonate (witherite). The iron sulphate minerals, siderotil, rosenite and copiapite occur variably throughout the deposit. Mineral texture is variable ranging from liberated sphalerite grains visible to the naked eye to intergrowths, particularly between sphalerite and galena, to less than ten microns. Both pyrite and marcasite are present. To date no enhanced reactivity of marcasite has been observed. For this discussion, ""pyrite"" will be used to refer to both iron sulphide minerals. In common with other sedex deposits, Red Dog contains organic and sulphur impurities."

The chemical compositions of copper feed streams are becoming increasingly complex following the growing demand for metals and corresponding shortages of primary sources. The optimisation of process conditions requires an accurate description of phase equilibria and thermodynamics. Integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling research program on the characterisation of the complex, multi-component, multi-phase gas-slag-matte-speiss-metal-solids Cu2O-PbO-ZnO-Al2O3- CaO-MgO-FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2-S-(As-Bi-Ni-Sb-Sn-Ag-Au) system is being carried out to support companies undertaking the pyrometallurgical primary production and recycling of copper. The experiments involve high temperature equilibration in controlled gas atmospheres, rapid quenching and direct measurement of equilibrium phase compositions with quantitative microanalytical techniques, including electron probe X- ray microanalysis and Laser Ablation ICP-MS. The thermodynamic modelling is undertaken using FactSage computer package with advanced thermodynamic solution models. The continuing development of research methodologies has resulted in significant advances in research outcomes. Implementation of the results of these fundamental studies involves an ongoing collaboration of researchers and industry technologists. An overview of recent progress in research, implementation and applications in industrial practice are given in the paper. INTRODUCTION Rapidly developing technologies increase the demand for various metals in number and volumes. Modern technological devices such as mobile phones, computers, other electronic devices, have dozens of metals—all those metals have to be a) produced and b) recycled. The fast transition in mobility from fossil energy delivered through combustion to renewable energy first stored in bakeries and delivered through electric engines introduce a significant change in the metal demand in terms of both type and volume of metals. Pyrometallurgy is playing a key role in supporting these changes in our industrialised society.

New control techniques were added in subsequent years.An on-stream X-ray analyser was installed in 1968. It provided circuit analyses for six years without the aid of a computer. "A laboratory Knelson Concentrator (LKC), 7.5 cm in diameter, was used to study the performance of a similar unit at plant scale, 76 cm in diameter, This paper reports on sampling and assaying procedures and problems, and discusses the performance of the plant unit.The sampling procedure was based on the extraction of large samples, 5-15 kg, and their complete processing with a LKC, to characterize size-by-size performance. The procedure yielded reliable estimates of overall gold assays, after blatant assaying errors were corrected. The plant centrifugal unit concentrate was sampled in situ, which yielded very erratic grades, with a large overall negative bias. Due to the very heterogeneous nature of the concentrate, which can be linked to flow patterns in the riffles of the unit, it is recommended that for future testwork, the concentrate be recovered separately, blended and then sampled.The plant centrifugal separator, when operated at a feed rate of 25 t/h, yielded total and free gold recoveries of 41 % and 62%, respectively. This is much lower than previously reported data, and suggest that at 25 t/h, the unit is overloaded. However, recovery did not decrease with time over a loading cycle of 2 hours, which suggests that present loading cycles, generally 1 hour, can be significantly increased. INTRODUCTIONThe study of gold gravity circuits is plagued with the statistical problem of determining the behaviour of particles occurring with a very low frequency. This problem becomes particularly acute with increasing particle size. For example, considering the average weight of a gold flake in the 840-1200 µm (20/28 mesh) to be about 5 mg (Banisi et al, 1991), a reasonably high grade feed of 10 git would require, for a relative error (standard deviation) of 10% on grade, 100 particles, that is 0.5 g of gold, or 50 kg of 840-1200 µm material (a Poisson distribution is assumed). Gy's formula, for the same data, yields a weight of 33 kg, with a shape factor of 0.1 and a size distribution factor of 0.5. Both results are comparable; to obtain the suggested weight of material, a stream containing 5% weight in the 840-1200 µm would require 1 tonne samples (of unsized material). The problem rapidly disappears with decreasing particle size. Still with Banisi et al's data, a gold flake in the 300-420 µm range averages 0.5 mg in weight; the same 10% error on grade corresponds to a weight of 5 kg. Gy's formula for the same size distribution and particle shape factors as above predicts a required mass of 1.4 kg. This would correspond to an unsized sample weight of 10 kg with 14% weight in the 300-420 µm, for example."

"A moveable flotation miniplant was designed and constructed at the research laboratory of Inco Technical Services Ltd. to address the need for flowsheet development with a limited amount of ore (such as drill cores). It consists of one rod mill, two regrind ball mills, one vibratory screen, 24 flotation cells of various sizes and two Venturi aerated flotation columns. The setup has continuous monitoring capability for pH, dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, conductivity and temperature in conditioning tanks and flotation cells. Various options regarding flotation reagents, circuit configurations, and fineness of primary grind and regrind can be readily evaluated. The throughput of the miniplant is 20 – 30 kg/hour ore.Unit operations such as flash flotation, magnetic separation and gravity concentration can also be evaluated as an integral part of an entire flowsheet development.This communication describes the basic design features of the miniplant and some examples of applications are given.INTRODUCTIONInco operates numerous mines in Sudbury and Thompson and will shortly bring the Voisey’s Bay mine into production. It has long been recognized that the ores from different mines or from different depths of the same mine can give different responses in flotation. There is a growing need to properly evaluate the ores before feeding the mill to maximize the return of the mine/mill operation. Inco Technical Services Limited at Sheridan Park, Mississauga, Ontario has developed a batch laboratory procedure to address this issue. The results are considered in the overall economical assessment of new mine operations.For ores that cannot be processed by the existing mill operations or that will be processed by a new mill, it is necessary to develop a flowsheet that can maximize the economical return of the mine/mill operation. While recognizing the importance and contribution of the laboratory batch flotation procedure, it does not generate reliable data for flowsheet simulation and design. A full-scale pilot plant campaign is normally required to obtain the design data but often this is not possible due to a limited amount of ore obtainable from the drill core. A small-scale pilot plant (mini pilot plant or miniplant) capable of processing 20-30 kg/h ore can provide this data prior to a full-scale pilot plant campaign. A miniplant can also be used to optimize the circuit configurations, reagent additions and recycle options of process water before pilot plant work and can be used to test a different flowsheet configuration for an existing mill before re-piping a plant circuit."

"Artificial Intelligence includes excellent tools for the control and supervision of industrial processes. Several thousand industrial applications have been reported worldwide. Recently, the designers of the A1 systems have begun to hybridize the intelligent techniques, expert systems, fuzzy logic and neural networks, to enhance the capability of the A1 systems. Expert systems have proved to be ideal candidates especially for the control of mineral processes.As successful case projects, an expert system based on on-line classification of the feed type using neural data analysis is described in this paper. The essential feature of this expert system is the classification of different feed types and their distinct control strategies at the plant. In addition to the classification, the expert system has a database containing information about how to handle the determined feed type. This self-leaming database scans historical process data to suggest the best treatment for the ore type under processing. The system has been tested in the Outokumpu Finnmines Oy, Hitura mine. Other projects have been reported to be in progress.INTRODUCTIONIn the past ten years considerable researches have been done in the application of artificial intelligent methods in process industry. The technologies of fuzzy logic, neural networks and expert systems have received several thousand applications worldwide: monitoring and analysis of process operations, fault diagnosis, supervisory control, feedback control and scheduling and planning of operations. Recently, the designers of these systems have begun to hybridize these intelligent techniques to enhance the current capability of expert system. Complex signal processing, neural networks, fuzzy logic and rule-based systems are also implemented to develop new so-called smart or intelligent sensors, actuators or components. Field buses are playing a more and more important role in automation systems and in imbedded systems. The development of field buses has allowed the distribution of smart components over networks."

"In 2010, closure of the Kidd metallurgical plants along with structural changes to the historical ratios of payable metals led to a review of the operating targets at the Kidd concentrator. Previous operating data indicated that there was potential for significant revenue improvements by lowering the copper concentrate grade. An extended plant trial was carried out in 2011 to quantify the revenue impact of lowering the copper concentrate grade from 27% to 25% Cu, as well as identifying the lower practical grade limit. Analysis of plant trial results indicated that the process change increased net concentrate revenue by $2 M to $3 M per year at current metal prices. Increased revenue was primarily associated with higher silver recovery to the copper concentrate while the marginally improved copper recovery was essentially offset by increased zinc losses and concentrate treatment and freight charges.Details of the plant test work results are discussed in this paper along with the financial analysis of the revenue improvements. Key areas covered are major revenue components of the concentrate contracts, validation of revenue improvements through plant testing and sensitivity of the improvements to market and plant variables.INTRODUCTIONThe Xstrata Copper Kidd concentrator commenced operations in 1966 treating ore from the nearby Kidd volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit in Timmins, Ontario (Thompson, Amsden, & Chapman, 1978). Over the years, up to four separate grinding-flotation divisions were in operation with throughput rates peaking at 4.5 million tonnes per year of ore in the mid 1980’s (Kelebek & Francis, 1998). As the mine production decreased and grinding throughput increased operations were gradually cut back and since 1998 two grinding-flotation divisions have been in operation treating Kidd mine ore. One of the idled divisions has been intermittently used for custom milling operations, most recently the Ni/Cu Montcalm deposit, which was milled from 2004 to 2009. Current budget throughput rates, limited by mine production, are 2.4 million tonnes per year of ore grading 1.7% Cu, 4.3% Zn and 55 g/mt Ag. Concentrate production rates are 150,000 tonnes per year of copper concentrate and 155,000 tonnes per year of zinc concentrate. The Kidd mine is the deepest base metal mine in the world with mining operations down to 9600 ft.In 2010 the copper and zinc plants at the Kidd metallurgical site, which previously treated the concentrate production from the Kidd concentrator, ceased operation due to a variety of economic and market factors. Following the metallurgical plant closures the Kidd concentrator products were shipped off site for treatment. The majority of the copper concentrate is now processed at the Xstrata Copper Horne smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec with the majority of the zinc concentrate processed at Canadian Electrolytic Zinc Ltd. in Valleyfield, Quebec."
