This presentation describes a major modernization project at the Geco concentrator. The objectives of the program were to replace obsolete flotation equipment and upgrade process controls.Noranda Minerals Inc. — Gecc Division is located at Manitouwadge in Northern Ontario. The community is situated north of Lake Superior approximately equidistant from Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie.Milling operations began in September, 1957. The mill processes a complex base metal ore by differential flotation techniques to produce copper, lead and zinc concentrates. To date some 43 million tons have been milled, qualifying Geco as a rather major base metal deposit.II. BACKGROUND:The Geco concentrator was designed and constructed in the mid 50's. A number of features specific to a concentrator of that vintage provided the justification for the modernization efforts described herein.Firstly, the mill was constructed without any instrumentation, not even pneumatic controls. Solid state electronics, computers and related instrumentation were unheard of, or rather primitive by today's standards.Secondly, some of the major equipment, in particular the flotation equipment, did not compare favourably to that in use today. MacIntosh flotation machines (more commonly known as Mac cells) were installed at Geco. These cells were prevalent in a number of concentrators built by Noranda, including Quemont Mining Corporation Limited, Gaspe Copper Mines Limited and Noranda — Horne Division. The Mac cells were used for copper and zinc rougher and scavenger operations. Some units were also installed for a pyrite recovery circuit that was never operated. In total, 104 Mac cells were installed in the main flotation area of the concentrator.

A simulation model RoadSIM using the ARENA modelling system has been developed to evaluate roadway development options for a given development panel configuration. The RoadSIM simulation system has provisions for variability/randomness in operations including cutting and loading at the face, tramming and discharge of coal to the boot end and availability of equipment. The modelling system provides a means for assessing the operational limitations of roadway development practices at a particular coalmine. It is a ?what if? tool that allows a range of equipment, configurations and operating practices to be assessed in terms of achievable advance rates and equipment utilisation. Output from the system is in the form of a dynamic visualisation as well as summary reports and detailed logs of operations over time.

"Chemical and limited biological monitoring of mine and mill effluents are being used by regulatory agencies to monitor and control discharges to the environment. Amendments to the Federal Fisheries Act may make it mandatory for mines to conduct Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) which will change the emphasis from monitoring effluents to monitoring impacts on receiving waters. The EEM amendments may expand the scope of present environmental studies to include: effluent mixing zone delineation; inventory and classification of resource, habitat, and historical receiving environment; effluent quality determination; chronic and acute bioassay testing; tissue analysis; benthic invertebrate monitoring; fish population surveying; fish tainting evaluation; and the evaluation of impacts on fish habitat, invertebrate communities and fisheries resources. The requirements for EEM have not yet been worked out by the mining industry and the government committee. Experience at Lakefield Research in conducting biological monitoring studies for the mining industry has shown that biological monitoring may be useful for assessing environmental impacts only if programs are planned and executed to collect relevant data, thus minimizing costs and maximizing effectiveness.IntroductionThe chemical monitoring of effluents and water bodies receiving effluents is common practice in the Canadian mining industry and has been used routinely by regulatory agencies to control discharges to the environment. Biological monitoring has also been used on a limited basis, primarily to augment chemical data collected. A number of regulatory bodies, primarily in Canada and the United States, have been incorporating biological monitoring into environmental regulations.Various forms of biological monitoring techniques have been used in Canada and the United States to help assess the impact of mining operations and effluents on the environment. Biological monitoring includes a wide range of activities, from monitoring metal uptake in individual organisms to examining the population dynamics in ecosystems. The most commonly employed biological monitoring techniques are the chronic lethality toxicity tests. Also becoming widely used are in situ and chronic toxicity tests."

"The effectiveness of sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and hydrogen peroxide pressure oxidation on the cyanide extractability of gold from a double-refractory concentrate is presented. Whileover90% of the sulphide content could be oxidized by either of the two acid pretreatments, only 65% was achieved by the peroxide oxidation. Carbon oxidation by both acid and peroxide pressure oxidation were less than 15%. Although the peroxide pressure oxidation pretreatment resulted in much lower sulphur and carbon oxidation, it gave pretreated residues with decreased levels of preg-robbing activities and higher gold recoveries during subsequent cyanidation, thus indicating some deactivation ofthe preg-robbing carbon during pretreatment with hydrogen peroxide. The refractoriness due to carbon preg-robbing activity was found to contribute more to the refractory behaviour of the concentrate than the occlusion of gold particles by the sulphide mineralization.IntroductionGold ores and concentrates are classified as refractory when a significant portion of the gold content cannot be extracted efficiently by conventional cyanidation, even after fme grinding (Weir and Berezowsky, 1984); (Demopoulos and Papangelakis, 1987). The refractory behaviour of precious metal ores and concentrates is generally attributed to two main factors: The presence of carbonaceous materials which could cause preg-robbing activity during cyanidation (Zaitseva et al., 1973); (Nice, 1971); Scheiner et al., 1971); (Eisele et al., 1983), or occlude gold-bearing minerals (Wells and Mullens, 1973); (Gasparrini, 1983); (Chen and Reddby, 1990), and the occurrence of sulphide minerals which can occlude gold, thus reducing the access of lixiviants (Schwartz, 1944); (Weir et al., 1986); (papangelakis and Demopoulos, 1990); (Michaelis, 1989); (Schweigart, 1965). When the refractoriness is due to a combination of these two factors, the ore or concentrate can be referred to as being ""double-refractory"". Because of the rarity of gold ores exhibiting this double-refractory phenomenon, only a few studies have been carried out on their suitability for pretreatment by existing techniques."

"The visual appearance and mechanical properties of aluminium alloy extrusions are strongly dependent on the microstructure and texture of the extruded profiles, where the desired microstructure and texture may depend on the specific applications. In the present work, the evolution of deformation, as well as recrystallization textures during extrusion of AA6xxx aluminium alloys, have been experimentally and numerically investigated. Extrusion trials were performed in a laboratory extrusion set-up, which enabled immediate water-quenching of the profiles at the exit of the die, and thus the possibility to capture the deformation texture prior to post-extrusion recrystallization. The textures and their through-thickness variations were experimentally measured by the electron back-scatter diffraction technique (EBSD, and the deformation textures numerically modelled by coupling FEM flow simulations and crystal plasticity (CP) simulations. Different CP models as well as different choices of model parameters were employed and evaluated for texture predictions. With an appropriate choice of crystal plasticity model and model parameters, the deformation texture can mainly be predicted, although the accurate intensities are hard to reproduce. The corresponding recrystallization textures, either generated through spontaneous recrystallization of the extruded profiles or through post-extrusion annealing, are far more challenging to reproduce with available recrystallization models.INTRODUCTION Extrusion is a widely applied thermal-mechanical process to produce aluminium profiles. The properties of the profiles, for example mechanical, fatigue, fracture, corrosion as well surface appearance, are strongly dependent on the underlying microstructure and texture, and the requirements with respect to these aspects may vary with applications (Ralston et al., 2010; Dumoulin et al., 2012; Donati et al., 2013). Moreover, it is often a challenge to produce extrusions with a consistent and homogenous grain structure and texture along as well as through the cross section of the profiles. It is thus vital to understand and be able to predict (model) how different microstructures and textures are formed and how they evolve during and after extrusion, as basis for controlling the final appearance and properties of extruded profiles."

"The developing world energy crisis and spiraling fuel costs have created a new public awareness and general acceptance of the need for energy conservation.Plants will have different objectives for an energy conservation program but there appears to be a common approach on how to save electrical energy.Data for a 180tph Rod Mill powered by a 750 hp motor will be used to demonstrate the relationship of energy input and production levels and to seek an optimum operating condition.Energy Conservation:Plants that have examined ways of dealing with the energy situations have concluded that energy conservation has important benefits for industry, including reduced costs, fewer production slowdowns inthe event of fuel shortages and a continued competitive position.There have been some ""startling"" conservation achievements attained through such simple plant maintenance and operating practices as reducing unnecessary lighting in buildings and yards, turning off' equipment not needed at night or over week-ends, through planning maintenance and production schedules to minimize energy use and through improving quality control to eliminate waste.Significant reducti.ons in energy use have been achieved by some rather simple but vigorous maintenance and plant engineering efforts directed at finding and fixing energy ""leaks"" rather than technological advances or major rework or redesign of facilities and equipment.An Energy Conservation Program often must overcome such obstacles as historic operating practices and emp1-oyee indifference, i.e. the ris.ing costs of fuel should result in re-examination of so1ne basic attitudes to energy conservation. Some measures, rejected in the past largely on the grounds of capj.tal. expenditure, now make economic sense in the light of future escalating energy costs."

In fracture mechanics modeling the rock mass is seen as the combination of rock material and fractures, which are evident on different scales. The activation and propagation of fractures dominates the stability and performance issues as well as fluid flow potential. Once fractures have started to grow into each other and create through going separations, stability of rock engineering constructions may be violated. Further, as fracture mechanics inherently incorporated a scaling law in the form of the participating fracture length, scaling issues can be more accurately mirrored. This contribution highlights some examples of application of a fracture mechanics based code on some rock mechanics issues such as numerical laboratory experiments, borehole stability or the creation of fluid pathways due to underground constructions. The results show explicitly the creation of fractures and connection of existing ones, and hence the safety and performance issues. It has to be concluded that the basis for frequent application of fracture mechanics on specialized challenges in Geomechanics is laid, and the needs for future developments are defined.

"The Wabush Mines project was formed in 1956 to develop a large iron ore property in Western Labrador. The town of Wabush along with the mining and concentrating facilities are located 640 air miles from Montreal, and 734 air miles from St. John's. The operation has been in production since late 1964.While mining and concentrating operations are located in Labrador, the pelletizing facilities are situated 275 miles south at Sept-Iles, Quebec. Dedicated in 1965, Wabush produces six million tons of high quality iron ore pellets annually. The company employs 1, 550 people at Wabush and the Pointe Noire plant at Sept-Iles.Wabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of three companies -The Steel Company of Canada, Dominion Foundries and Steel Ltd. and the remaining 58% by the Wabush Iron Co. Ltd. Wabush Iron Co. Ltd. is in turn owned by six companies: The Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company, Inland Steel Company, Interlake Inc., Wheeling Pittsburg Steel Company, Finsider International S.A. and Pickands Mather & Company which is also managing agent.The town of Wabush is set in a remote part of Northern Canada accessible only by rail and air transportation. But this in no way has hindered the growth and development of the area. Modern housing units, shopping facilities, airport and of course, recreational facilities are all patt of every day living amenities, an accepted aprt of southern communities, but quite unique for northern isolated mining localities."

"1. INTRODUCTIONIn the past two decades, low-grade gold and silver ore bodies in the United States have been exploited by heap leaching, primarily with sodium cyanide solutions. This method has proven to be a viable alternative to conventional milling due to its low capital and operating costs. Successes have been made, particularly in Nevada, where ores are well oxidized and the climate is conducive to this method. in recent years, heap leaching has been tried in northern latitudes with some success, however, in using this method, operators face more severe limitations than do their neighbours to the south.This paper evaluates the limitations of heap leaching with particular emphasis on northern climates and introduces an alternative method to recover precious metal values in a continuous vat. This proprietory technology, known as the Mackie Vat Leaching Jig, shows promise, with improved gold recovery and potential to operate in cold climates.2. WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS TO HEAP LEACHING?Heap leaching of non-refractory ores is subject to the following limitations:1. Minimum amount of free gold and nuggets in the ore.?. Minerology of the ore--accessibility of gold to lixiviant.3. Minimum particle size and size distribution of crushed product to allow percolation of lixiviant through the heap.4. Minimum amount of clays or clay-like slimes that can cause coating of ore particles and channelling of lixiviant.5. Minimum strength of ore particles or agglomerations to allow economic height of heaps to be built.6. Amount and suitability of real estate.7. Amount and type of precipitation.8. "Rare earth minerals are usually concentrated by flotation, magnetic or gravity separation methods to produce concentrates that are subsequently leached with hydrochloric (HCl), sulfuric acid (H2SO4) or nitric acid (HNO3). About 75 % REEs are lost in gypsum by-product when apatite is dissolved in H2SO4, whereas more than 80% of REE can be extracted from the apatite using HCl and HNO3 leaching processes, respectively. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to find an efficient process of dissolution of rare earth elements (REEs) from apatite ore by sulfuric acid solution due to its lower cost. In order to optimize the dissolution process, effects of different parameters, namely, concentration of H2SO4 (0.05 – 6 M), solid/liquid phase ratio (1:50 – 1:100), temperature (20 – 80 ºC), agitation speed (300 – 900 rpm), and leaching time (0.5 - 6 h) on the dissolution of REEs from apatite ore were examined in various intervals. The contents of main REEs in the apatite ore used in this study were (as % wt): 3 % La, 6 % Ce, 0.6 % Pr, 2.1 % Nd, 0.2 % Sm and 0.3 % Y. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis identified fluorapatite and phlogopite as main minerals in the ore. The results obtained from leaching experiments showed that more than 85% of REEs were dissolved from the apatite ore under the optimized conditions, which were: 1 M H2SO4, particle size of -150 + 100 µm, S:L phase ratio of 1:50, agitation speed of 500 rpm at 20 ºC for 1h. The XRD analysis revealed that main mineral compositions of the residues from 1M and 6 M H2SO4 leaching are gypsum (CaSO42H2O) and hemigypsum (CaSO40.5H2O), respectively.INTRODUCTIONThe term rare earth elements (REEs) denote the group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements consisting of the 15 lanthanides, plus yttrium (Y) and scandium (Sc) in the periodic table. These metallic elements are generally divided into two sub-groups; (1) the cerium sub-group, which is called “light rare earth elements” (LREEs), includes the elements from lanthanum (La) to europium (Eu), and (2) the yttrium (Y) sub-group elements, which are known as “heavy rare earth elements” (HREEs), are the remaining lanthanides from gadolinium (Gd) to lutetium (Lu) plus yttrium (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 2005). The REEs occur together in the minerals due to their chemical and physical similarities, which cause problems of separating them from one another (Abreu and Morais, 2014). Although REEs are relatively abundant in the earth’s crust, they are typically dispersed and rarely occur in concentrated forms, making them economically challenging to obtain. There are a wide variety of rare earth minerals, however economic deposits of REEs in mining are bastnasite (La, Ce) FCO3, monazite (Ce, La, Y, Th) PO4, and xenotime YPO4 (Binnemans, 2013; Xie, et al, 2014). Due to the unique physical, chemical, catalytic, electrical, magnetic and optical properties of REEs, demand of these elements has increased dramatically with the advent of new technologies in electronics, communication, construction, energy and medicine (Jordens, et al, 2013). Since 1990, China has provided about 90 % of REEs worldwide. Japan and United States are the largest consumers of China’s REEs. In 2010, China announced to reduce REEs exports to Japan, as it tended to increase prices of REEs and to reduce a stable supply of REEs in the world market (Humphries, 2013). Therefore, there has been an increase in recent exploration activities intended to reveal new commercial sources of REEs and to bring them into production (Antico, et al, 1996). Apatite is an important host mineral for REEs in igneous and metamorphic rocks and can be used as an ore for those metals (Kanazawa and Kamitani, 2006). Apatite is also the main source of phosphate fertilizers and phosphoric acid (Habashi, 2013; Emsbo, 2015)."

Long-term production scheduling optimization has been a challenging issue for the mining industry because of the size and complexity of the problem. The current planning algorithms have limitations in terms of addressing the stochastic variables underlying the mine planning problem. In this paper, an intelligent agent-based mine planning framework based on reinforcement learning is introduced. The long-term mine planning is modelled as a dynamic decision network. The intelligent agent interacts with the block model by means of a stochastic simulation and employs a Q-learning algorithm to learn the sequence of pushbacks that maximizes the net present value of the mining operation. The intelligent open pit simulator (IOPS) was implemented with an object-oriented design in Java®. A comparative application case study was carried out to verify and validate the models. The proposed method was used in planning an iron ore deposit and the results were compared to the Milawa scheduler used in Whittle® software. The outcome of the study demonstrates that the intelligent agent framework provides a powerful basis for addressing real-size open pit mine planning problems.

"A colorimetric technique, originally developed for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC) based on the Komarowsky reaction, has been extended to a wide range of common mineral flotation frothers. The procedure, which is briefly described, is shown suited to on-site determination in a series of industrial campaigns. Some frother observations are described, including: concentration evolution down a bank, distribution between pulp and froth phases, and a mass balance around a circuit. Minute amounts of frother in recycle water were also measured.The contribution of frother and alcohol by-products in the analysis was generally additive for plants using aliphatic alcohol type frothers and decoupled for systems using glycols. Typically, U250C (polyglycol) was used at higher concentration (>10 ppm) than MIBC (aliphatic alcohol) (<10 ppm) or F-150 (polyglycol) (<3ppm).The ability to monitor frother easily will help interpret gas dispersion behaviour and should permit further optimization of flotation cell hydrodynamics and chemistry. The capability to directly measure should help optimize the type, amount and location of frother addition, and to assess frother recycled with reclaim process water.INTRODUCTIONOwing to the lack of analytical methods, the task of determining frother concentration in plant flotation circuits is not routinely performed. Industrial sites seldom outsource analyses that are both costly and inconvenient, due to the necessity of shipping freeze-dried samples to remote testing facilities. A more direct colorimetric method has recently been demonstrated for the laboratory characterization of common industrial frothers (Gélinas and Finch, 2004). The approach, based on the Komarowsky reaction (Penniman et al., 1936; Coles et al., 1942; Duke, 1947), was previously described by Parkhomovski et al. (1976) for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC). The reaction involves the interaction of the OH group of a higher alcohol, concentrated sulphuric acid, and salicylaldehyde, to yield coloured solutions with intensities that can be analyzed by UV-visible spectrophotometry."

"The important task of metallurgical accounting that used to be done manually is being more and more automated. Currently available solutions can generate accounting reports without human intervention or almost. However, the practical conditions for fully delivering the promised benefits of those solutions are sometimes overlooked either by end-users or by integrators. The mere fact of filling reports with values satisfying several constraints such as mass conservation constraints does not, by itself, ensure a high quality metallurgical balance. Since managers make decisions based on these reports, it is logical that the metallurgical balance performance be monitored and retrofits be made if necessary. Such retrofits may involve modifications to the measurement strategy or the reduction of the spatial resolution of the material balance model. This requires an estimability and redundancy analysis (ERA) tool to assess the feasibility of the modified model. Since determining by hand the estimability and redundancy of a set of non measured and measured variables is not trivial, even for a medium-sized mineral processing plant, a dedicated ERA tool brings valuable assistance to the metallurgist in charge. The present paper aims first at explaining how a state of the art metallurgical balance is a key enabler for the adoption of a smart process plants paradigm (SPPP) in mineral processing. Then, the fundamentals behind the building of an ERA algorithm are introduced and illustrated by two examples. Finally, the role of an ERA tool in achieving state of the art metallurgical accounting and how it contributes to delivering additional value are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Smart Process Plants Paradigm (SPPP)Mineral processors have seen an increase lately in external pressures toward operating performance improvements. Indeed, the globalization of the mining business is a key driver to becoming more productive, more responsive to market changes, to improving corporate governance and reporting standards. Furthermore, mineral processors are also expected by their neighbouring communities to continuously improve their sustainability score. These current pressures differ somewhat from the past ones in leading to a larger than ever number of conflicting constraints that plant managers must concurrently satisfy while maximizing plant profitability. It is in turn not surprising that this context requires actions involving more real-time collaborative actions between more people in more places than ever before."

Work to improve employees' behavior in Głogów Copper Smelter began in 2009. It has been noted that over 90% of accidents at work are attributable to human reasons. At that time, a series of external workshops was contracted based on exercises conducted by a psychologist trainer with supervisors. Having trained about 300 employees, an observation of employee behavior at workstations was started as part of the control of risk reduction measures. As a result of the above actions, the number of accidents was reduced by half between 2009 and 2017. Currently, internal workshops for communication improvement for behavioral auditors are conducted by the employees of the Smelter. Named: "I observe, react and communicate" and aimed at further mastering the elements of the safety culture in Głogów Copper Smelter. INTRODUCTION KGHM Polska Miedz is an integrated mining and smelting copper producer based in Poland and operates on the international metal market. KGHM, with annual production of over 500 thousand tonnes of copper, holds a middle position in the world ranking of copper producers. At the same time, in Europe it is the largest producer of copper from its own ore deposits, possessing its own integrated production structure, from underground mining operations to final, top-quality product. It is also worth mentioning that KGHM Polska Miedź is one of the largest Polish exporters and, apart from copper, is a significant primary silver producer in the world. The mission of our company, consistent with its strategy, is to produce copper and silver in a safe mode for workers and the environment, with reduced environmental impact. Therefore, "Głogów" Copper Smelter operations are continuously focused on the creation of safe working conditions, and minimizing the negative effects on the environment. "High intensity conditioning has been demonstrated in a number of cases to enhance fine particle flotation. The improvement could be attributed to the enhanced formation of particle aggregates. However, the understanding of aggregation mechanisms remains rather limited. Recently, an enhanced particle aggregation was observed by the formation of small air bubbles resulting from high intensity agitations (HIA). In this study, a novel visualization system is designed and constructed for characterizing the fine bubbles formed in an HIA cell. The new design allows determination of gas evolution and bubble size distribution. With this system, the effect of dissolved air on fine bubble generation by HIA is investigated. The results show that HIA creates a favorable environment for the formation of gas nuclei and small size bubbles due to hydrodynamic cavitation.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a dominant separation technique employed by mineral industry to recover the valuable mineral particles. However, in general, particles finer than approximately 10 µm are not effectively recovered by conventional froth flotation technique due to their low inertia and high specific surface area (Fuerstenau, 1988). Therefore, the fine particle flotation has been considered as the central challenge of flotation research. Substantial advances have been made for fine particle flotation from both a theoretical and technological point of view (Fuerstenau et al., 1979; Song and Lu, 1990; Subrahmanyam and Forssberg, 1990; Sivamohan, 1990; Sedat and Barry, 1991; Matis, 1995). High intensity agitation (HIA), for example, has found some success to improve fine particle flotation kinetics in laboratory tests (Chen et al., 1999a and 1999b; Valderrama and Rubio, 1998; Rubio and De Brum, 1994).The effect of mechanical agitation on flotation kinetics has been recognized for many years. In mid-1970s, Warren (1975) reported that increasing the shear rate of the pulp could improve the efficiency of ultra fine particle flotation. He attributed this improvement in flotation to the formation of aggregates. This concept of aggregation has been extended by Rubio (1978), and Bulatovic and Salter (1989), who employed high intensity agitation (HIA) method to promote aggregation. They found that HIA with the addition of collectors, frothers and suitable modifiers significantly improved both the flotation recovery and selectivity of ultra fine sulphide minerals. The improvement was explained by warren’s shear flocculation theory. Till now, many studies (Chen et al., 1999a and 1999b; Valderrama and Rubio, 1998) have been undertaken to improve fine particle flotation by HIA. However, most of these studies were focused on the relation between energy input and flotation efficiency. Less information was available for describing how the aggregate formed during HIA process."

London Mining Plc. is developing an iron ore project in Sierra Leone. The Marampa mine is a brownfield development effort, having been operated by others since the 1930?s until low iron ore prices forced closure. Peak production of the prior operations was approximately 2.5 Mt/a in the 1960?s. Following civil war In Sierra Leone, London Mining obtained the mining license in 2006 and commenced activity to redevelop the Marampa mining and processing operations. There are two ore deposits of interest for development as well as a resource comprised of tailings from previous operations. Phase 1 will be the mining of the tailings resource with a 1.8 Mt/a plant producing 66 per cent Fe sinter feed, expandable to 3.6 Mtpa. The first phase is currently under construction with start-up expected in the third quarter of 2011. Phase 2 will include development of the two ore deposits. These deposits are weathered secondary ore and the main primary ore resource. Phase 2 is currently under prefeasibility study and targets a final 16 Mt/a concentrate production in 2016. Outotec partnered with London Mining on testing efforts to develop the magnetic separation flowsheet using SLon VPHGMS machines to process the Marampa material. This paper explains the flowsheet development process for the weathered and primary ores commencing with sample characterization and detailed parametric investigations to evaluate SLon performance. The final flowsheet configuration is explained, including expected circuit recoveries and concentrate quality, clearly demonstrating the performance of the SLon VPHGMS circuit in iron ore tailings treatment applications.

"This paper describes the design of a molybdenite flotation circuit using FLEET technology applied to kinetics data produced from laboratory flotation testing and distributed across the blocks of a mine plan using a geostatistical approach. The geostatistics assigned the statistical error that arises from having a limited amount of sample testing data to the kinetics estimates of each block of ore in the mine plan. The final design then included a quantification of risk based on the accuracy of the block flotation kinetics and model fitting. The design made reference to the extensive technical reports describing earlier metallurgical test work including some pilot plant work over thirty years ago.The testing involved conducting MinnovEX Flotation Tests (MFT) to determine the rougher flotation kinetics at the specified reagent conditions and rougher-cleaner tests to determine the change in kinetics resulting from regrind. These flotation kinetics were used within FLEET simulations to create a full-scale flowsheet and plant design including recommended equipment sizes and the forecast of operating results. Measurement of detailed flotation kinetics for a wide range of samples allowed the effect of size of grind and efficiency of classification (i.e. width of size distribution) to be predicted for the whole ore body.INTRODUCTIONAdanac Moly Corp. proposed to develop a 20,000 ton per day mill to produce high quality molybdenite concentrate from its Ruby Creek resource in north-western British Columbia. It is a relatively clean low grade porphyry-monzonite occurrence containing minimal quantities of other sulphides such as chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite and galena. Molybdenite occurs mainly as coarse flakes with lesser amounts of finer sized values. An optimum plant design was required to can achieve the predicted operating results, at a known level of risk, while treating the variability inherent in the ore body."

"This paper provides a critical review of the development and application of advanced controls in mineral processing at the industrial level. These algorithms can be sub-divided into four broad categories: Kalman filter, self-tuning, extended horizon, and knowledge based or expert systems. Applications from each category are described outlining the benefits derived, the relative advantages of that particular controller, and potential limitations of the controller which may inhibit their more widespread application. The paper will conclude with a description of control algorithms which are currently in the rudimentary design stage, but may hold tremendous potential for mineral processing control systems in the next decade. INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian mining industry has a large installed milling base and many plants are run with manual or low level automatic process control. The competitive pressures imposed by the market will not allow these operations to ignore the significant increase in efficiency that can be achieved through the effective application of advanced process control. These improvements will come in the form of better quality, higher productivity and reduced costs.There have been quite a number of reports of successful applications of advanced control in mineral processing applications. As this trend continues, and more of the work is documented, the technology will be more effectively transferred to process and control engineers. It is the authors' opinion that the most difficult problems facing process control are not really technical in nature. Rather, they lie more in process control education. This extends from management, through engineering to the operators.The purpose of this paper is to provide a tutorial type overview of some of the more frequently encountered advanced control algorithms. The assumption is that the reader has a superficial knowledge of this technology. In the discussions which follow, several techniques are explored within the framework of simple process examples. Industrial examples are cited for each and an evaluation of the expected longer term potential is given."

"Campbell Mine which has been in continuous operation since 1949 has undergone numerous operational changes in the past 3 years. This paper describes the process changes which have occurred at the Campbell Mill since 1991. The paper discusses the engineering, construction and startup of the effluent treatment circuit, the new oxide filtering and merrill-crowe precipitation circuit, and the changes to the pressure oxidation circuit. Particular attention is paid to startup problems and solutions to these problems. A review of the benefits and results of these process changes is also discussed. Future changes are also briefly reviewed with anticipated goals and expectations.IntroductionCampbell Mine is a gold mine 100% owned and operated by Placer Dome Canada. It is located in Balmertown, Ontario which is located 300 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Campbell Mine has been in continuous operation since 1949, producing nearly 8,000,000 ounces. In 1993 Campbell Mine is budgeted to produce 289, 750 ounces of gold at a cash cost of $157 US/ounce. Daily mill tonnage is budgeted for 1,430 tons/day but has milled as high as 1,600 tons/day on a consistent basis. Recovery in 1993 is 93.4% and is budgeted to average 94.5% in 1994.In the 1992 edition of the proceedings of the Canadian Mineral Processors conference I described the changes that were made at Campbell starting in 1989. This paper continues where the 1992 paper ended and discusses the changes to the Campbell mill since that lime. The changes to Campbell since January 1992 have been numerous with capital expenditure in the mill exceeding $14.1 million. This paper describes three primary projects since that lime: the effluent treatment project ($5.5 million), the oxide leach/filtering and merrill-crowe project ($4.6 million) and the pretreatment project ($2.81 million). The focus of this paper is to highlight the justification of each project, the design and engineering, and some of the initial operational problems and solutions applied to those problems."
