The paper discusses the use of animated dynamic numerical simulations to support design and operational decisions in the mining industry. The basis of the simulations discussed is a queuing theory engine with added features that enable continuous processes to be included in simulations. This approach is well suited to the needs of the mining industry which has a mixture of discrete events interfaced to a variety of continuous processes via various forms of surge capacity. Examples are given of the benefits of animation in communicating concepts to those with limited domain knowledge and simulation as a tool that facilitates the sharing of understanding between the stake holders of a system. The analytical content of the paper addresses conflict for resources within systems, the constraints imposed by human and other types of resources, and the impact of external events. Examples are presented showing the use loop diagrams and Gantt charts in the recognition conflict, and its causes. and the use of utilisation logs to identify opportunities for cost reduction.

The Kidston orebody is a kilometre diameter breccia pipe of Permo-Carboniferous age' assoc- iated with rhyolitic dykes and hosted by Proterozoic granodiorite and metamorphic rocks. Mineralization and alteration are associated spatially and temporally with brecciation and rhyolite intrusion. Three stages of alteration have been recognized: pre-brecciation, and early and late stage post-brecciation. Gold is known to be particularly associated with late stage post-brecciation cavity infill and sheeted veins. Fluid inclusion and stable isotope results show the importance of moderate-high temperat- ure, saline, magmatic fluids in the early stage mineralization and in the brecciation of the pipe. Later periods of alteration, accompanied by gold deposition, are associated with fluids only slightly depleted in 180 relative to mag- matic waters, unlike the strongly 180-depleted meteoric water typically found in hydrothermal Permian and Carboniferous deposits of eastern Australia. The 5180 values and low salinities in fluid inclusions suggest the fluid may have formed from vapour condensation from a magmatic fluid. Fluid inclusion data and alteration assemblages define the prevailing chemical conditions. Gold transport under these, conditions would have been primarily as a bisulfide complex.

In June 1976 a 600'tonne/day manganese ore sinter machine, with on-strand cooling, was commissioned at the plant of Tasmanian Electro Metallurgical Company Pty. Ltd. at Bell Bay, Tasmania. This machine was installed in order to utilize manganese lump ore screenings generated in the preparation of raw materials prior to charging to the electric smelting furnaces at Bell Bay. Since commissioning, trial sintering of a number of different grades of manganese ore fines from Groote Eylandt Mining Company Pty. Ltd, has been conducted and suitable sinter has been produced from these different grades. The sinter produced is used as part of the furnace burden in both ferro manganese production and silico manganese production. The inclusion of sinter as part of the charge in the production of ferro manganese has considerably improved furnace operating conditions and performance.

Statistical frequency distributions may be used to characterize the overall variation of grade in orebodies. Special types of distribution (e.g. lognormal, log-type A) are necessary to describe skewness inthe case of rare metals. Also needed (but for the most part hitherto neglected) is the serial correlation function which describes the tendency for grades near together in an orebody to be closer together than grades at points relatively far apart.The sampling problem for orebodies is interpreted in statistical terms. Different methods are reviewed, and the effect of serial correlation discussed.A discussion is given, based on experiments and observations made by the author, of biases arising in the minei:l material by such methods as chip sampling and grab sampling due to such causes as nonrepresentative selection by the sampler.INTRODUCTIONMiners have always recognized the large element of chance in their operations. Chance is the raw material of statistical theory and, provided there is some recognizable pattern or underlying regularity in a set of data arising from the operation of chance events, statisticians are able to formulate mathematical models to study them. Mining engineers, geologists, and statisticians have gone a long way between them towards finding general statistical rules which describe the distribution of minerals and metals in orebodies, and even the distribution of orebodies over the earth's surface.These rules do not have the force of physical laws, though they obviously derive from them and have been used to throw light on them. Preliminary project evaluation is relevant to the evaluation process of the decision makers (or executives) prior to making the critical business choices. Important to the assessment is an integrated sensitivity, scenario and risk analysis at every stage of a mining project. This should include the evaluation of different options taking into account uncertainties. Construction of interactive financial computer models where each element is functionally integrated into a fully integrated life-cycle allows rapid and automatic study of the sensitivity of each element through changes in the value of an input. The scenario analysis is the effect of changing more than one input at a time, organised through scenarios in a decision tree. Risk analysis is an integrated analysis of the effect of all uncertainties of the parameters, using Monte Carlo simulation. Key to the asset decisions process is that the decision maker is provided with the essential integrated decision information. We have clustered this information into several scenario groups. Within each group, two levels of uncertain information are distinguished: discrete scenarios critical for the decisions; and remaining uncertainty within the scenario (risk analysis) which can be modelled by continuous probability density functions (pdfÆs). For an asset, the relevant scenarios in each group and the associated continuous pdfÆs need to be defined. When the scenario groups and associated pdfÆs have been defined for the asset, the decision process can be started by structuring the different scenario groups in a Scenario Tree. A Scenario Tree contains decision and end nodes. Each end node corresponds to a completely defined mine project or asset model. The calculations for each end node result in a set of stochastic realisations for the reserves, production forecast, cash flow, and profitability indicators (NPV, IRR, DPR). Thus, a deterministic and fully probabilistic multi-commodity analysis tool is provided to investigate the sensitivity and robustness of decisions.

In southeastern China, offshore Tertiarybasins are buried underneath the broad continental shelf areas from Taiwan to Hainan Island. These basins bear relatively similar characteristics of structure, stratigraphy and tectonics. Based on age and tectonic framework, these Tertiary basins are divided into two groups of Paleogene basin and Neogene basin (Fig.1 and 2). However, observations of extensional structures indicate that the Paleogene basins are rift basins; and the predominant structural features are NE-SW trending half grabens and fault blocks. In a regional scale, these half grabens and adjacent uplifts represent a horst-and-graben structural style. Neogene basins are downwarp basins lying on the tilting continental shelf. Late Tertiary sequences are relatively undeformed but locally with minor folding and thrusting during the Pliocene-Pleistocene.Seismic stratigraphy and well data indicate that the Early Tertiary strata are commonly tilted and disturbed as nonmarine to marginal marine facies deposited in the wedge-shaped half grabens; the Late Tertiary strata are generally parallel undisturbed marine facies accumulated in the enlarged downwarp basins overlying the infilled half grabens. In general, three major regional unconformities formed during the Late Cretaceous, the Late Eocene and the Middle Miocene. Widespread extrusive basaltic flows are commonly associated with these unconformities.

HAPPENING to be in Cue recently the writer was unexpectedly called upon to make surveys of some diamond drill bores on the Big Bell mine on the Murchison goldfield. The owner of the mine Mr Herman Mandelstam. had brought such apparatus with himas he could lay his hands on. and no other was available without prohibitive delay.The usual method of making these surveys as is well known is by putting a glass tube half filled with gelatine or glue in a melted state down the hole with a small magnet freely suspended in the glue and having it there till the glue sets solid. When this tubeis withdrawn (its depth down the bore being noted) the bearing and inclination of the borehole at this particular point can be read - the bearing by the compass and the inclination by the angle between the tube and the surface of the glue which of course ishorizontal. By taking a number of these observations according to the degree of accuracy required the course of the bore can be fairly accurately plotted.In dealing with dry holes there is little trouble but when the holes are full of water great difficulty is experienced. In the case in point the first observation was made in water 300 ft. deep, corresponding to a pressure of 130 lb. per sq. in. The tube containing the gelatine and glue (a mixture was used) was found, when hauled to the surface, to be completely filled with a weak mixture of water, gelatine, and glue and there was no horizontal surface from which to measure the angle of inclination of the bore. The water had been forced through the corks and sealing wax with which the tube had been closed. After several attempts it became obvious that no method available would keep the water from getting into the air-space in the tube, and to a pressure-proof metal container was impossible, nothing remained but to do away with the air-space and this was accomplished by using two liquids of different specific gravity - mercury and melted glue. This paper examines the use of the FrothSim flotation simulator to improve the performance of an industrial column flotation cell. The performance of an industrial retreat column cell is simulated, and, from the discrepancies between the simulated and experimental results, a problem with the wash water distribution is postulated. The scientific reason for the reduced performance with uneven wash water addition is described in detail. Further simulations indicated the potential for improvement with an even wash water distribution, resulting in both improved performance and reduced wash water usage. The simulated uneven wash water distribution was confirmed industrially, and the headers were redesigned and installed. A sampling campaign to compare the performance before and after the modifications showed that the flotation performance was improved dramatically, with a statistically significant decrease in gangue recovery, without a commensurate reduction in valuable mineral recovery.

Getting it right is a very profitable outcome. Shareholders would ideally like to see their directors get it right all the time on the major economic decisions. But it is very difficult for mining directors to get it right all the time in such an uncertain environment. Primary decision-makers of companies with significant stakes in the mining industry should get it right much more frequently. The legal measures of evidence (beyond reasonable doubt and on the balance of probabilities) can be used to determine whether grade estimates (a key revenue variable) are realistic. The application of this approach can be far reaching. More frequently correct decision-making would result in more effective allocation of limited resources (capital and labour). In turn, this would result in higher financial returns and a more extensive mining industry.

True Total Quality of Management (True TQM) principles provide an operating philosophy for maximising productivity and minimising unit costs of output. The presentation will show the practical and successful use of these principles. This paper will introduce the case study and provide background material on True TQM.

The principle underlying the winner's curse is that in competitive bidding situations where the value of the asset bid for is uncertain the winning bid will overstate the true value of the asset. The successful bidder is blessed with the winner's curse. What this paper will explore is to what extent this is true; how acquirers can avoid being blessed with the winners curse; and show how joint venture deal structures are used within the mining industry to avoid the winners curse.

"The Coal Seam Gas (CSG) industry has seen a rapid increase in activity over a 30-year periodfrom the early 1990s within Australia. Despite public concerns over environmental issues, theCSG industry has increased in Queensland to the point where more than 90 per cent of naturalgas consumed in Queensland is CSG. The New South Wales (NSW) CSG industry has been slowerto respond for many reasons. Ninety-five per cent of natural gas consumed in NSW comes frominterstate. However, CSG activity in New South Wales is increasing notwithstanding publicconcerns. The CSG potential of three Petroleum Exploration Licenses (PELs) are being assessedwithin the Southern Sydney Basin that provides a unique opportunity to develop resourcesstrategically around many abandoned coal mines. The question has been asked - what do theseabandoned coal mines mean to the project? Are they good or bad? Are they friend or foe? Thispaper att empts to answer these questions and in doing so describes the coal mine ventilation andgas management philosophies and practices used to assess gas production potential. The coalmining philosophies not only have the potential to assist in the construction of a highly successfulCSG project, but they also potentially add signifi cant pre production value by re defi ning how theresources and reserves are assessed and therefore valued. The behaviour of abandoned coal minesand the goaves within the PELs are not well understood by the petroleum industry. However, in the Illawarra region there is an abundance of coal mining knowledge and expertise that if properly focused can greatly increase the chances of project success."

The Northern Cape Province of South Africa is host to the Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF). The northern portion of the KMF hosts high-grade manganese referred to as Wessels’ type ore and is mined mostly from underground operations. WorleyParsons TWP is currently involved with the development of a ventilation shaft for one of these mines. The main challenge is to develop through the unconsolidated Kalahari material and weathered portion of the Karoo formation. These formations are preserved very erratically over short distances. A lack of understanding of the unique challenges presented for developing shafts in this area has resulted in the failed development of a shaft on an adjacent property and over-expended budgets on others.The renowned red sand of the Kalahari forms the top several tens of metres and overlies a horizon of gravels and calcrete that pose seasonally variable water ingress problems. A very stiff red clay horizon is then intersected. The Red Clay is prone to swellling during excavation and has been the main stumbling block on previous constructions. The standard approach has been to develop non-stop through this layer. The red clay is underlain by another horizon of calcrete, gravel and conglomerate that marks the bottom of the formation. The top of the Dwyka Tillite (Karoo Formation) is usually highly weathered and has a distinctive yellow colour. The weathered tillite is highly susceptible to drying and becomes friable. At reef-intersection, the combination of subhorizontal bedding and joints with the dominant subvertical faulting results in potential wedge failures in the manganese and ironstone units.This paper describes the geotechnical issues identified during the planning of the ventilation shaft and the risks associated with development through the Kalahari and weathered Karoo Formations. Construction of the Ranger uranium project located 230 kiss east of Darwin in the Northern Territory commenced in January 1979. Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) was incorporated in February 1980 to acquire all the rights in the project. The total cost to ERA of these rights was $407 million, made up of $125 million in cash to the Federal Govern- ment and the issue of 125 million $1.00 shares at par, plus a payment of $16 million in cash to each of Peko-Wallsend Ltd (Peko) and EZ Industries Ltd (EZ).

Since the introduction of the pocket calculator, electronic measuring equipment, lasers and computers, the mine surveyor's approach to his work has changed. Where he once used steel bands he now uses infra-red, visible light or radio waves. The reading and storing of angles is done automatically and he now has to be familiar with the facilities that a computer can offer, instead of plotting and calculating manually. This highly sophisticated equipment is continually being upgraded, modified and fine tuned. This paper will attempt to highlight some of the equipment at present in use by the surveying profession and research currently being conducted by the WA School of Mines. The various options in EDM will be considered including the latest unit capable of measuring distance without the benefit of a reflector, thus enabling the surveyor to co-ordinate points that were previously thought inaccessible. The School is currently working on changes to the GAK1 Gyro Theodolite which may improve results and enable the operator to have more control and confidence in his observations. Areas under consideration are improved lighting, binocular viewing and interfacing the instrument to a stopwatch. In the last few years the computer is being used not only for surface pickups and control but also for underground work. We will highlight the underground options in this area and the software available.

South Australia's economic development has relied heavily on the mineral industry. In the late 1840s the rich copper deposits at Kapunda and Burra saved the Colony's economy when South Australia became a world copper producer. Copper lodes developed at Moonta-Wallaroo during the 1860s brought further prosperity when mining activities at Kapunda and Burra were in decline. In addition to those large mines there were many smaller workings scattered through the Flinders and Mount Lofty Ranges producing copper, gold, silver, lead and zinc. Most of the mines of this period were worked by Cornish immigrants who brought their own technology and mining methods with them. These people have left a cultural legacy unique in Aus- tralia. In this Jubilee 150 year (1986) the Department of Mines and Energy, working in conjunction with the Department of Environment and Planning, is helping to preserve and interpret selected historic mining sites, most of which have been neglected since their closure. This work is designed to draw people's interest to mining history by providing interpreted sites for them to visit and to demon- strate the importance of the mining industry in South Australia's cultural and economic develop- Ment.

Oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfides is accelerated by the activity of acidophilic iron- and sulfur-oxidising microorganisms. The ideal biocide for controlling biocatalysed acid rock drainage (ARD) would be inexpensive, inhibitory toward sulfide-oxidising bacteria at low concentrations, relatively non-toxic toward non-target organisms, degradable in the environment outside the zone of application, stable and long-lived in the impacted environment, sufficiently mobile to penetrate into piles of waste rock or tailings, and effective regardless of the metal sulfides present. A potent agent for combating ARD that fits these criteria is the thiocyanate anion (SCN-). The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of thiocyanate in controlling or preventing ARD within several types of sulfidic waste rock and tailings. Results were evaluated within a context encompassing process water and solids management strategies employed at different precious and base metal mines. Sulfidic rock was treated with solutions of potassium thiocyanate and subjected to accelerated weathering tests in lab-scale humidity cells, trays, and columns. Certain tests also utilised solid phase copper thiocyanate (CuSCN) to evaluate a ærelease on demandÆ strategy. Leach solutions were analysed for parameters indicative of ARD including pH, redox potential, conductivity, acidity, sulfate, iron, and certain heavy metals. Two larger scale field tests were also initiated by personnel at separate mines using, in the first case, ore containing a pyritic component in large columns and, in the second case, waste rock containing base metal sulfides in lined pits. Humidity cell tests showed low concentrations of thiocyanate solution applied to pyritic waste rock could reduce ARD formation by 90 per cent or more compared to untreated controls, with the residual release of ARD components (eg sulfate, Fe, acidity) probably reflective of strictly chemical oxidation of the sulfides by molecular oxygen. Thiocyanate applied at a concentration of 22 mg/kg to waste rock from a base metal mining operation in large laboratory scale columns reduced acidity and sulfate release by 75 per cent to 80 per cent compared to untreated controls. This extent of reduction in ARD may not meet discharge water quality criteria, but has the potential to significantly reduce lime consumption and sludge production in a conventional neutralisation facility. The use of a solid-phase metal thiocyanate compound (CuSCN) at a dosage of 194 mg/kg pyritic ore resulted in the following per cent reductions in leach solution parameters in comparison to controls: sulfate (78 per cent), acidity (93 per cent), dissolved Fe (99.4 per cent), and dissolved arsenic (99.9 per cent). This compound has the further advantage of being relatively stable until needed, dissolving only in the presence of an acidic and oxidising ARD solution. If this line of investigation progresses favorably, it offers the possibility of an ARD prevention technique that may be applicable in some settings. Mine-site pilot scale tests with pyritic ore resulted in reductions in sulfate (56 per cent) and Fe, As (66 - 68 per cent). In sum, thiocyanate at relatively low concentrations dramatically reduced ARD from sulfidic rock in a simulated heap. The pilot test using waste rock containing base metal sulfides has begun only recently. A preliminary process design and cost estimate was made for fullscale application of thiocyanate to waste rock at a hypothetical gold mining operation producing 5000 tpd of ore and 10 000 tpd of sulfide containing waste rock. The combined capital and operating costs for the full-scale thiocyanate application facility were about $US 0.25/tonne of waste rock and $US 0.50/tonne of ore. Although thiocyanate is readily available commercially, it also occurs in process solutions associated with certain types of mining processes. Such solutions after selective treatment might be recycled to sulfidic waste rock or tailings, rather than being treated for thiocyanate degradation.
