A new test coke oven of 7 cu. ft. capacity is described. The oven was designed to simulate conditions in a central section of a battery oven and a special feature is the achievement of unidirectional heating from theflues on either side of the charge.The method of charging permits close control of charge conditions such as bulk density and moisture content.These conditions, as well as coking conditions (e.g. flue temperatures and coking time) must be varied to simulate conditions in different batteries. The effects of several variables on coke quality are discussed.Using test oven conditions corresponding to those of Newcastle steelworks batteries, good agreement was obtained between strength indices of test oven and battery cokes. For 17 tests, the average ASTM stability and hardness indices for the test oven coke were 38· 5 per cent and 69·7 per cent, while those for the battery coke were 37· 4 per cent and 67·6 per cent.Observed relationships between coke yield and productivity, and volatile matter and charge moisture are given.The use of a test oven to classify test coals into prime-, medium-, poor-, and non-coking coals is discussed.This may be achieved by observing the effects of the test coal in blends with other coals. The results of a series of blending tests are presented.The dangers of attempting to predict coke quality from a single coal property are pointed out, since this can be done only for very restricted ranges of coals.A diagram is given showing the established trends in the effects of blending various types of Australian coals on coke strength.

Murrin Murrin Operations have not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues, many of which are the result of design decisions, have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. Four design aspects of the CCD circuit that have caused and continue to cause operational problems are: the inclusion of solution neutralisation gypsum in the CCD circuit feed which was designed solely for HPAL residue without proper investigation of its impact on the achievable underflow density and resulting wash efficiency; the decision to construct the thickener base from thickened solids; the lack of redundancy in the overflow, underflow and tailings pipe work; and the lack of thickener operational flexibility in the central rake-lift and feedwell dilution system. In November 2002, the lack of operational flexibility in the rake-lift and the feedwell dilution system was improved through mechanical modification as follows:CCD1 rake mechanism was modified to allow central vertical lift of 600 mm; and CCD1 changed to forced dilution using the Outokumpu TurbodilRântechnology by replacing the E-DucânRtechnology of Eimco. The installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedwell dilution system changes are discussed in this paper.

"The estimate and control of sampling errors is essential for all mining operations, especially when dealing with strategic materials, such as niobium. This paper is based on a traditional quality assurance and quality control technique used to confirm mineralised intersection zones, and proposes the validation of sampling data using diamond drill twin holes, in order to evaluate and improve the quality of the current data set. The geological model of the niobium mine – located in Araxá, Minas Gerais, Brazil – was built including 77 diamond drill holes of a sampling campaign carried out during the 1970s. There are few records about the collection and preparation procedures of these past samples, making it difficult to estimate the errors associated with their analytical results. Therefore, 11 twin drill holes were drilled to compare their samples against the samples from the 1970s drilling campaign. The new hole locations were chosen as near as possible to the old holes location. The JORC Code, 2012 edition, relates the use of twin holes as a good sampling technique to assess sampling and assay data. Three parameters were considered to validate the 1970s drill hole campaign by the twin drill hole campaign: the difference of the coordinates between the paired holes the difference among the positions of the geological contacts to validate the geologic description the difference between the paired samples grades was calculated to validate the analytical results.The analysis of the grade range variation between sample pairs was based on three techniques: geostatistical interpretation of vertical semivariogram to obtain the nugget effect calculation of the relative difference between duplicates calculation of the error associated with the sampling protocol established according to Pierre Gy’s Theory of Sampling.The results were satisfactory for hole coordinates; however, the ore content showed a high deviation, although this divergence can be explained by the nugget effect. For the lithological intervals, the new results contributed to an effective identification of variations among lithologies, ie brown weathered ore and saprolite. An account is given of experimental apparatus for generating a short duration high velocity water jet and the effect of its impingement on various rock samples under air or water cover. The penetration was found to be highly dependent upon the rock structure; in general material with closely interlocking grains was resistant.The damage sustained by a stationary sample held close to the jet did not vary greatly whether the sample was in air or confined under a water layer; but when the sample was translated under the jet there was a marked increase in the damage sustained.Some consideration was given to the possible practical application of a water jet for deep hole drilling and an estimate made of the power requirements and transmission losses for such a system.

Automatic control of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills has often been considered complex. Recent experiences at Century Zinc (worldÆs second largest open pit zinc mine) refute this. Together with operating knowledge and appropriate control techniques high quality control is achievable. In this application model-based, constraint, and multiple output control were employed. The control was implemented using standard blocks in the plant DCS. The resulting overall control strategy fulfils the operating objectives and controls the mill with minimal operator involvement over 95 per cent of the time. Previous campaigns using expert systems and complex DCS based control have lacked durability. Their fall into disuse is briefly discussed.

By the use of flotation tests it was confirmed that there are two functions of oxygen in sulphide mineral flotation. Sized samples of galena and chalcopyrite were sulphidized, washed free of excess sulphide ion, and then contacted with air-saturated water for certain lengths of time. The mineral was then transferred to a sealed laboratory flotation cell containing water with a known concentration of dissolved oxygen. Xanthate and frother were added and flotation continued for 1 min.Both the extent of mineral oxidation and the concentration of dissolved oxygen markedly affected the flotation of galena and chalcopyrite. The response to a change in either variable is dependent on the level of the other, but generally best flotation occurs with the maximum degree of air saturation of the pulp. Galena flotation is hindered by oxidation of the mineral beyond a small threshold amount but a similar effect for chalcopyrite was not observed...

The Aberfoyle Tin Mine lies on a wide sloping bench about 2,000-2,500 ft. above sea level, at Rossarden, 14 miles north of Avoca, in north-eastern Tasmania. The quartz-cassiterite veins were discovered in 1916, but mining did not begin until 1926. Trenching revealed seven small tin-bearing veins within a width of 57 ft. of Palaeozoic slates and sandstones, and it was assumed that the mineralization extended beneath the adjacent cover of Permian strata, but the presence of the main vein system (the 26 Vein System) was not suspected until the Aberfoyle Fault was discovered late in 1928.The mine has now been developed on thirteen levels, to a depth of 1,350 ft. The lower limit of economic mineralization appears to lie at about the ll-level, which is 1,060 ft. vertically below the concealed outcrop of the main veins. Since 2008, Arrium has been developing and commissioning a new low-grade hematite ore benefication plant (or OBP) at its Iron Baron mine site.The Iron Baron mine, which was closed in the 1990s, could not consistently yield the high-grade hematite required for pelletising. However, in todayÆs market, the 12 Mt of waste dumps represent a significant low-grade hematite resource, ideal for benefication.Initially, an internal scoping study and several sampling campaigns were conducted to determine the ability to upgrade the available low-grade dump material to a product suitable for export. Test work was conducted at Mineral Technologies (formerly CPG), and included high intensity magnetic separation, spiralling and jigging. Due to promising results from a wet processing circuit, Arrium engaged Mineral Technologies to design a flow sheet that could provide 1 Mt/a of a mixture of high-grade lump (-32 + 8 mm) and fines (-8 mm) products for export.With construction of the plant completed in late January 2012, Arrium, in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, began two commissioning phases. Each phase ended with a toll gate to prove the plantÆs capacity to reach rate and desired grade. After an initial period of running on water, feed solids were introduced to the plant and troubleshooting of bottlenecks began. The first toll gate, whereby the plant was required to run for 24 hours at an average feed rate of 200 t/h (80 per cent of design rate), was completed on the 1 March 2012. Further troubleshooting and resolving of issues allowed the plant to steadily increase feedrate while maintaining good availability and grade. The second toll gate required the plant to run for 72 hours at an average feed rate of 200 t/h while meeting grade, yield and water consumption targets. Sampling campaigns were conducted during this period to track the performance of key equipment. Completion of the test, and full handover of the plant to Arrium, was completed on the 21 April 2012.Although the formal commissioning phases had been completed, ongoing optimisation of the OBP continued, ensuring that all major equipment was working to produce the optimum yield and grade. Sampling campaigns were conducted on the jigs and spirals, with results and correlations used for operations documentation.Overall, with successful completion of the final acceptance tests, the commissioning of the Iron Baron OBP has been established as a major success achieving all production and quality targets as per the original design intent.This paper will focus on the successful commissioning and ramp-up performance of the plant however reference will also be made to the key development stages involved with the development of the project.CITATION:Stanton, C and Bannear, M, 2013. Golden Cross is a volcanic-hosted, low-sulfidation, epithermal Au-Ag deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield. Irrespective of the rock type (andesite versus dacite), hydrothermally altered wallrocks are enriched in K, Rb, As and Sb around Au-Ag mineralised veins of the Empire vein system and stockwork. Sodium and Sr are strongly depleted around these veins, whereas Mg and Fe are locally depleted. Calcium and Si display mixed behaviour, varying from unchanged to depleted to enriched. Other elements including Al, Ti, Mn, Zr, Y, and Nb show little change or are immobile during hydrothermal alteration. Element enrichment and depletion trends are directly related to the degree of alteration and the alteration mineralogy. Addition of K and Rb and converse loss of Na and Sr in intensely altered wallrock surrounding veins corresponds to the replacement of igneous plagioclase by hydrothermal adularia. Sodium and Sr occur in moderately altered rocks on the margins or in æhard barsÆ that contain plagioclase. Locally, elevated Si concentrations and depletion of Mg adjacent to the Empire vein system reflects intense silicification of the wallrocks and the replacement of mafic minerals by quartz rather than by chlorite. The geochemical zonation patterns at Golden Cross are very similar to those at the McLaughlin deposit California, and shallow levels of the active Broadlands Ohaaki geothermal system. Therefore, determination of K, Na, Rb, Sr, and Ca enrichment and depletion patterns provides insight into alteration intensity and mineralogy that is complimentary to traditional trace element analysis of As, Sb, Hg, Au, Ag, Zn, and Pb used in the exploration of shallow level (< 500 m) epithermal Au-Ag deposits.

The cost of power is an important matter to mining companies generally and this thought that the members of the Australasian Institute of Engineers, as well as the engineering and mining professions generally would be interested in any proposal for the reduction of that cost has led to the presentation of this paper.The writer trusts that the description will be found clear and increase the interest in this interesting subject. In the up of the electrical arrangements touched on in this paper, the author has had the able assistance of his friend Mr. Mars, to whom he offers his hearty thanks. The selection of the best class of power plant for a mine is a very difficult and large problem and it is quite out of place to dogmatise that anyone of the many systems that offer is better than another, eg that the all electrical is better than the partly direct steam-driven and partly electrical, or that a gas plant is better than a steam plant. Such a selection is one that calls for very careful and close consideration, in each particular case, of a large number of before it is possible to arrive at a proper decision.

The dissolution of gold in cyanide has been studied, using both chemical and electrochemical techniques. The electro-chemical studies have confirmed that gold may become passive in cyanide solution if its potential becomes more positive than -O· 5 V v. saturated calomel electrode (S.C.E.). The results of the conventional solution rate tests suggest that, although the solution rate is controlled by the rate of diffusion of oxygen at low oxygen and agitation levels, when these are increased the gold may become passive and its solution rate approach a steady value, or even decrease with increasing oxygen level. The passivity of gold has been shown to be of importance in the solution of small spheres of this metal, and in the extraction of gold from a calcined auriferous pyrite concentrate.INTRODUCTIONAlthough it has been appreciated for many years (McLaurin, 1893, 1895) that dissolved oxygen is a necessary adjunct to the solution of gold by the cyanide process, attempts to quantitatively assess its effect have led to conflicting results. For example, Barsky, Swainson, and Hedley (1934) reported that an increase in oxygen concentration improved the solution rate, but Beyers (1936) claimed that such an increase would reduce the rate at which the gold dissolved.By using an electrochemical approach Kudryk and Kellogg (1954) showed that the diffusion rate of either the cyanide or the oxygen was a controlling factor, and that, if the mole ratio of cyanide to oxygen concentration was greater than 10, the solution rate was proportional to oxygen concentration.These results, although they represent some of the most careful work available, were in direct contradiction to the findings of Mills (1951), who found that gold may become passive in cyanide solution, with a resultant decrease in solution rate.

Terramin Australia LimitedÆs Angas Lead and Zinc Mine operates in the unique and picturesque environment of Adelaide Hills, 60 km South East of the Adelaide city centre itself. The mine was granted approval for construction by the South Australian Government in April 2007 and the Process Plant was constructed and commissioned in July 2008. This paper outlines the background to the plant design and the approval process given the close proximity to the local town of Strathalbyn, with a major focus on the commissioning learnings from the Concentrator startup for future reference and a review of the operational performance of the Concentrator throughout the first year of successful production versus design and expectations.

Of the optimization techniques proposed in determining the optimum open pit limits, dynamic programming and graph theory have proved most successful. However, publications on these two methods lack a certain amount of rigour and clarity in exposition. Certain ideas in the methods have been clarified and additional features introduced in order to make them more sensitive to practical applications. A case study in the form of an application of these ideas on data from a producing mine is presented and discussed.

Since zinc was first deposited at Risdon in February, 1917, provision of the most economical cathode assembly has been a subject of extensive research, the major problems being corrosion and efficient use of power.From the corrosion viewpoint, a perfect cathode is one in which the life of the headbar and the deposition sheet are the same. However, corrosion usually concentrates in a narrow zone across the face- of the sheet, resulting in breakages which, before the advent of argon arc welding, meant a loss of a 'complete assembly.Attempts to extend sheet life included use of thicker sheets, multitudinous protective coatings applied with varying degrees of success, re-rolling, and for a time, aluminium consumption was reduced when broken sheets found re-use as protecting strips. This latter economy became impracticable when electrode spacing was reduced for greater efficiency in power utilization.As an integral part of the electrode, the headbar was modified accordingly. Copper headbars, although more corrosion resistant, were replaced by aluminium due to a possibility of dissolved, copper promoting deterioration.Thicker electrodes and regulated spacing reduced internal shorting, whilst provision of knife-edge type supports on both contact and insulator ends of headbars aided in electrode centralising and continuous electrical conduction.After much experimeIitation, an assembly has been evolved which, with the aid of argon arc welding and tbe use of minimum additional aluminium, permits comparable headbar and sheet lives, combined with good electrical conduction throughout the life of the cathode.INTRODUCTION Over 300 tons of zinc are produced daily at Risdon from a purified zinc sulphate solution by electrolysis, the zinc being deposited upon all-aluminium (except for copper contact) cathodes. It is stripped in 72-hour cycles from the cathodes, melted and cast into the customary rectangular slabs.

Anglo Coal Australia (ACA) takes a proactive position with regards to attracting and retaining employees at a graduate level. Currently, ACA has graduates in its program across all disciplines: Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Commercial, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, Human Resources, Safety Engineering and Processing Engineering. The current program is three years in duration and involves two (generally) equal periods at different ACA mine sites or Brisbane Corporate Office. The authors review the literature and discuss the application of methods to the design of thickeners for ilocculated metallurgical pulps. The use and evaluation of flocculents is described. Experimental data show that design based upon laboratory settlingdata is acceptable. The economic aspect of design is also discussed.INTRODUCTIONFor many years there has been little change in the methods for the design of thickener installations. While modifications have been made in the method of applying the data all methods have been based on the observee settling rate of the solids. The development of a theoretical approach based on physical data would involve so many variables which affect the settling rate that the more practical approach of direct observation seems unlikely to be replaced as the basis of design.The advent of synthetic fiocculents has introduced a modification in operation which affects design and should be considered. The authors review the subject and attempt to bring it up to date with present day procedure. Until recently the original work of Coe and Clevenger (1916) remained the basis of thickener design. They described their observation of the different zones encountered in settling, namely clarification, feed, transition, and compression or thickening- zones. The solids pass through the transition zone in settling from feed density to some higher density where settling ceases and ·some compression or compaction effect controls. the density obtained. The point at which the settling zone ceases to exist is known as the critical point.
