Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas have occurred in Australia in the Sydney Coal Basin since 1895 and in the Bowen Coal Basin since 1954. The largest has been about 500 tonnes of coal and so their magnitude and character have not approached those experienced in some other countries. The occurrence of CO2 with some Australian cases provides some similarity with the worst affected areas in France and Poland.The proneness of seams depends on coal rank and seam gas composition, among other factors. The proneness of places depends on depth, structure, intrusion, tectonism and other factors affecting the geometric, physical and chemical uniformity as well as details of mining. As a phenomenon due to gas and stress, prevention can be achieved by relief of high gas and/or stress condition. Alternatively, controls can be applied to render mining safe for personnel. Unfortunately day-to-day prediction is not widely and reliably achieved to allow selective use of prevention or control. The initial rate of desorption is the most promising day-to-day indicator.Various researches include gas conditions and parameters, stress and failure conditions and parameters, coal variables and geological variables in relation to prediction, prevention and control. Some assistance in research may derive from study of analogous phenomena of instantaneous outbursts of salt and other rocks and gas. It is concluded that in the Sydney and Bowen Basins, any coals with less than 30 per cent Volatile Matter (VM) ash free dry (afd) at depths over 200 m could be prone. Proneness increases with depth, with lower volatile content, with geological disturbance including faulting, intrusion and recent tectonics, with increased CO2 in seam gas, with narrow work and with other factors. Much more research is needed.Unfortunately outbursts are needed too, to provide the research with realistic data. With the problems of mechanism and prediction still being unsolved much research remains to be done. No present aspect of research is satisfactorily resolved.

The Kyaukpahto gold deposit is located at latitude 23¦ 47Æ 55" N and longitude 95¦ 56Æ 35" E in the Kawlin-Wuntho district, Sagaing Division, Myanmar. Gold mineralisation is hosted in sandstone of the Male Formation (Eocene) and occurs as stockworks and disseminations. The high-grade gold mineralisation is locally concentrated in a breccia zone. The gold deposit is closely associated with a NNE-SSW trending fracture system that forms tensional open fractures. These tensional zones are thought to be directly related to the Sagiang transfer fault system that experienced several hundred kilometres of northward dextral movement during the post-Upper Miocene. Major sulfide minerals are pyrite and arsenopyrite with minor galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Gold mineralisation is associated with intense silicification, sericitisation and argillic alteration. Primary Type I fluid inclusions in the quartz from the mineralised zone are 5 to 15 ¦m across and yield homogenisation temperatures of 239¦ - 310¦C and salinities of 1.2 - 10.9 wt per cent NaCl equivalent. Laser Raman spectroscopic analysis indicates the presence of CO2 and CH4 in Type II fluid inclusions. Sulfur isotope analysis of disseminated pyrite in the ore zone by the laser ablation method indicates d34S values from -5.48ë to +5.53ë. The geology, alteration, ore mineralogy, fluid inclusion microthermometry and sulfur isotope data of the Kyaukpahto deposit are consistent with an epithermal ore deposit model for the deposit. However, the presence of CO2-liquid bearing fluids and the detectable CH4 in the gaseous phase of the fluid inclusions conflict with a typical epithermal origin for the Kyaukpahto deposit. The host siltstone and mudstone sequence, trace element geochemistry, and the disseminated nature of sulfide and gold mineralisation are also common characteristics of a sedimentary rock-hosted gold deposit, and these features may indicate a Carlin-like affinity. The channel iron deposits (CID) (Ramanaidou, Horwitz and Morris, 1991; Morris, Ramanaidou and Horwitz, 1993; Ramanaidou, Morris and Horwitz, 2003; Morris and Ramanaidou, 2007) are one of the two major iron ore types mined in the Hamersley Province. The CID provided around 41 per cent of the total of 268 Mt of iron ore mined from the Hamersley Province in 2006. The current CID resource is around seven billion tonnes. The CID deposits occupy numerous meandering palaeochannels in a mature surface that includes Precambrian rocks and ferruginous palaeogene valley fill. These palaeochannels are generally less than a kilometre but can range to several kilometres in width and from one metre to more than 100 m thick. The two currently mined CID areas are located:in the western Hamersley Province in the Robe palaeochannel, and in the east in the Yandi palaeochannel. These two major CID channels extend over 100 km to 150 km, with the Robe system up to 5 km wide. The granular ore facies typically contains ooids and lesser pisoids with haematite nuclei and goethite cortices, with abundant goethitised wood/charcoal fragments and goethitic peloids, minor clay and generally minimal porous goethitic matrix. Post deposition weathering is common and produced secondary facies.Ooids and pisoids were mostly derived from the stripping of a well- vegetated deep ferruginous surface. The peloids were derived both intraformationally from fragmentation and reworking of desiccated goethite-rich mud. Minute wood/charcoal fragments in the soil that were initially replaced by goethite and then dehydrated to haematite, formed nuclei for many ooids and pisoids. In addition, abundant, generally small (in situ by goethite within the consolidating CID. This profusion of fossil wood, both as ooids and pisoids nuclei and as discrete fragments as well as the local presence of kenomagnetite suggests major episodic wild fires in heavily vegetated catchments. The goethitic matrix was the result of chemically precipitated iron hydroxyoxides, resulting from leaching of iron-rich soils in an organic environment.

Nickel ores from three different mines, Digger Rocks, Cosmic Boy and Flying Fox, are treated at the Forrestania concentration plant. The ore types vary from oxidised supergene ores to primary pyrrhotite+pentlandite ores. Mineralogical investigations on the ore and process samples have been carried out in different stages of process development. One of the studies was done with the samples collected from the flotation circuit in 19 June 1994 when the Cosmic Boy ore was processed. The process products were screened, and the size fractions were analysed for the main elements by appropriate analytical methods. Mineralogy of the products was studied microscopically and composition of the sulphides was analysed with an electron microprobe. Liberation of the main sulphides in the flotation feed was determined with the point-counting method, and weight percentages of the minerals were calculated using chemical and mineralogical data. The typical sulphide assemblage of the Cosmic Boy ore is violarite, pentlandite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. Violarite dominates over pentlandite (ratio being 70 per cent to 30 per cent), and pyrrhotite is strongly replaced with pyrite and magnetite. One of the most common mineralogical features of this ore type is secondary magnetite, which occurs as narrow rims in porous violarite or in association with secondary pyrite. Serpentine, talc and chlorite are the main gangue minerals. In the milled feed (76 per cent -74 ¦m) locked particles between nickel and iron sulphides are common. About 41 per cent of total pentlandite occurs as pure liberated particles, and 33 per cent as locked grains with violarite. Liberation degree of violarite is 55 per cent, and the most common type of locked particles is violarite+magnetite, carrying about 20 per cent of total violarite. To achieve a recovery of 80 per cent for pentlandite, all the particles containing at least 50 vol-% pentlandite should be floated into the nickel concentrate. Correspondingly recovery of 80 per cent can be reached for violarite if all the particles containing at least 65 vol-% violarite are floated.

The Yabulu Nickel Refinery commissioned in 1974, processes lateritic ore via a modified Caron process to produce high quality nickel and cobalt products. The Greenvale orebody provided the sole source of feed to the plant until 1990 and with well-blended mineralogy, it resulted in stable and predictable plant performance, allowing the operating focus to be on reducing energy consumption and increasing ore throughput. This approach provided better economics than pursuing increased reduction efficiency. From 1990, increasing quantities of lateritic ore were imported from Indonesia, Philippines and New Caledonia. This introduced considerable variation in ore blends and instability in plant operation but also provided the opportunity to treat higher grade ore blends which yielded higher reduction efficiencies. Ore reduction is conducted using 12 Herreshoff multiple hearth reduction furnaces, using heavy fuel oil as reductant. The æROASTERÆ Project was approved in November 2000 with the primary objective of improving Nickel reduction efficiency by: Stabilising Roaster Operation via a structured program including focused maintenance efforts, capital equipment upgrades, new process measurements, process re-design and improvements to operating skills and process troubleshooting. A structured technical program including laboratory and plant studies using one plant furnace as a pilot unit to develop improved knowledge of how the reduction process proceeds in the Herreshoff furnace. Armed with this knowledge, optimised process conditions and a reduction process model were developed contributing to a significant demonstrated reduction efficiency improvement. Technical input to the project was provided by QNI with Hatch providing the engineering and project management for the $8.5 M capital work. Execution of the work included extensive consultation with the plant operators and close cooperation between the Hatch project team and QNI operations personnel ensuring installations were completed with minimal production disruption. A strong focus on safety management resulted in a number of brownfields project relevant safety initiatives being implemented resulting in project completion without a serious injury.

The surface reactivity of underwater deposited, high-sulfide copper mine tailings was evaluated under fresh and saline water cover conditions by measuring the surface and pore water quality as a function of time. The experiments were conducted in aquarium type lysimeters having a shallow, well-aerated water cover up to approximately 0.25 m over the tailings. Natural lake water was used for the fresh water cover and seawater for the saline water cover scenarios. The tailings showed significant surface reactivity and oxidation under both fresh and saline water cover conditions. The surface water quickly became moderately to highly acidic, and surface oxidation of the tailings resulted in increased dissolution and release of sulfates, iron (total), calcium, magnesium, aluminium, manganese, copper, nickel, zinc, lead, cobalt and silicon to the water covers. A moderate to slightly increased loss of total sulfides, including pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite, occurred in the tailings surface layer to a very shallow depth. In comparison to the fresh water cover, the complete acidification of the saline water cover was delayed by approximately 30 - 40 days because of its additional available alkalinity. Whereas the rate of surface water acidification and release of aluminium and silicon were moderately reduced under saline water cover conditions in comparison to those for the fresh water cover, the release of calcium, magnesium, iron (total), copper, nickel, lead, zinc, sodium and potassium were enhanced. The mass transfer fluxes for dissolved copper, nickel lead, zinc and iron (total) from the tailings substrate to the surface water cover following surface water acidification were higher by 50 per cent or more in the saline water cover than those in the fresh water cover. This release was also reflected in moderate loss of pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite in the very shallow upper surface layer of the tailings at the tailings-water interface, although the loss of pyrite in the surface layer was less pronounced. In both cases, the dissolution of aluminosilicate minerals moderated, to a certain extent, pH and acidity in the water cover.

The level of wire rope technology used in mine hoisting applications has a significant effect on the overall efficiency of the hoisting system. This paper discusses the effect that a reduction in rope mass per unit length and an increase in rope breaking strength can have on rock skip capacity and hence mine shaft output. A 20 per cent reduction in rope mass per metre for a typical 48 mm hoisting rope, while maintaining the breaking strength, increases the skipÆs capacity by circa 30 per cent at a suspended rope length of 3000 m. Such gains in shaft output, without any significant changes to the shaft or winder design, can have major implications for the feasibility of future deep mine projects. The technical challenge for rope manufacturers is how to get rid of 20 to 30 per cent of the rope mass while keeping the breaking strength and modulus of elasticity of the whole rope constant. CASAR are currently developing steel wire rope constructions where the steel IWRC has been replaced with high strength, high modulus fibres such as Kevlar«, Spectra« and Dyneema«. One of the key aspects of such composite rope designs is to ensure equal load sharing between the different rope components, ie in proportion to their area. If there is a significant difference in modulus between the fibre core and the steel outer strands, the core may not carry its proper proportion of the load and the outer strands would be overloaded. Some technical aspects of the design of composite steel wire ropes are discussed. A design and operational issue that needs careful consideration is the safe non destructive testing (NDT) of composite ropes. Traditional magnetic NDT would only be capable of inspecting the steel wires. Techniques therefore need to be developed that would give operators a reliable indication of the condition of the load bearing fibre core. This paper also discusses possible solutions to this very important NDT question.

Zinifex Rosebery Mine is a lead-zinc underground mining operation located at the base of Mount Black, on the West Coast of Tasmania. Mining activities at the Rosebery Mine have been undertaken for over 100 years, and it has been operating in its current form for over 60 years. A large surface and underground exploration drilling program over the last 18 months has increased the mineÆs expected mine life from five to 12 years, with expectations that over the next 18 months as the program continues this will swell to 20 plus years. Zinifex Ltd secured Rosebery Mine in April 2004 and commissioned a detailed life-of-mine (LOM) study on all aspects of the operation. One of the most detailed sections of this report was on the state of the current ventilation system. It was identified in this report that for mining at the current depth of approximately 1100 m to continue a minimum 30 per cent increase in ventilation quantity was essential, as well as a likely requirement for a refrigerant cooling plant for each of the two deepest panels, the K and P lenses. It was identified that Zinifex did not have personnel with the expertise in underground refrigeration to manage and implement a project of this nature. A second report was commissioned with Bluhm Burton Engineering (BBE), a South African firm specialising in both surface and underground large-scale refrigeration plants. BBE concluded that two refrigeration plants were required to provide the necessary cooling power in the lower sections of the mine. In 2005, with BBE as technical consultants, Zinifex Rosebery Mine embarked on a project to commission two underground refrigeration units capable of lowering the wet bulb temperature at the decline face by four degrees centigrade. Time and time again history shows us that mine closures are sustainability failures. Mine operators do not know how to turn the mine closure into an asset and communities around the mine do not know how to plan or what to implement to be sustainable when the mine needs to close. If we want to achieve sustainability when we close a mine, we generally need to consider what economic activity we will have to create leading up to the mine closure to ensure that the communities remaining in the area are not worse off after mining than before. There is not one silver bullet solution to mine closure, as all mines are affected by different environmental and socio-economic conditions. That is one of the reasons why mine closure is so difficult.Effective stakeholder engagement is the nucleus around which sustainability is built. Achieving sustainability as part of mine closure means not only a self-sufficient community, but also could lead to transformation of that asset.A key issue is that neighbouring communities become completely reliant on the mine. The mine has influenced the economic, environmental and social aspects of the community and with no alternative economic sources. The community and municipality will struggle with capacity to maintain infrastructure, services and jobs. This not only impacts the mine workers and their families but also other businesses and people in the town that make a living by servicing the needs of the workers and their families. Social problems associated with a mining operations and closures need to be considered. The misuse of alcohol, domestic violence, breakdown in law and order, economic and health issues all have a severe influence. Families often need to relocate from the mining town to find work. Multi Torque Industries and Jadefoil have developed a safer, more efficient method of explosive protection, retention, placement, and constraint. In particular, this refers to advancements in airbag technology, where the system will offer an alternative to conventional gasbags and decking methods to provide a far more controlled and safer working environment. Airbags have provided operator control and reliability which has not until now been possible in this type of application. The benefits have been noted by current users and the advantages have provided an increase in productivity and significant savings in explosive waste. Obvious problems with gasbags lie in their instability in hot conditions where the danger is associated with gas canisters exploding with great force posing a significant risk to operators. Other problems associated with the decking systems currently on offer is the lack of versatility and operator control. The airbag systems give the operator full control to guarantee accurate placement, assured retention whilst boasting a quick operation of less than a few seconds for conventional void blocking, decking and plugging. One of the main advantages of the airbags is that the operator has full control over placement and retention force, therefore in wetter conditions where slippage can be a problem extra air can be added at the operatorÆs discretion to ensure a sufficient grip. Technical calculations coupled with experimental testing have demonstrated that an airbag will support the weight of a 30 m water column in an 89 mm hole at an initial bag pressure of 5 psig. Applications are increasingly growing whilst more customers embrace their use. Advancements such as the ability to deck in overhead holes, block voids in overhead holes at any depth, explosive retention in very wet conditions, longhole stabilisers to prevent hole closure and concertinaed liners reflect a dynamic potential for new technologies. All of these applications provide a decrease in explosive waste, an increase in operator safety, an increase in explosive protection, and an increase in productivity.

Acid generating sulfidic tailings covering a surface area of approximately ten hectares have been deposited in the historic mining area of Lavrion in Greece. For the development of a remediation strategy, the performance of three alternative acid generation control techniques was assessed under actual field conditions. The techniques involved the application of dry covers, including a synthetic HDPE liner and a compacted clay layer with capillary barriers. Furthermore, the potential formation of a low permeability hardpan layer at the sulfidic tailings surface by limestone addition was investigated. The field tests covered an area of 2500 m2, which was divided in equal quadrants, corresponding to the control plot and the three alternative remedial options. To monitor the amount and quality of percolated water, lysimeters were installed beneath the four plot areas. Based on the monitoring results over a period of six years, due to the dry climate encountered in the Lavrion area, a low amount of water percolates through the pyrites if no action is taken (control area), corresponding to 20 - 25 mm per year. This water is highly acidic, pH = 1.2, and contains a heavy load of contaminants, eg Fe 40 g/L, Zn 15 g/L, and As 1.5 g/L. The HDPE cover eliminated the percolation of water into the material for a period of five years, whereas thereafter the volume of leachates increased to values similar to those recorded in the control plot. The water collected in the lysimeter of the clay cover has been minimal corresponding to approximately five per cent of the drainage volume produced in the control area. In the fourth plot, which involved limestone addition to sulfidic tailings, the volume of drainage initially collected was almost double compared to the control area. After three years of monitoring, significant reduction in the amount of percolated water was observed, attributed to the formation of a cemented layer (hardpan), at a depth of 40-80 cm from the testpad surface.

A method is presented for calculating the number of cycles of stress to failure of a drill rod from operating variables; a mathematical analysis by Cooper of the stresses present in drill steels is applied to the forged collar, i1i-in. hexagonal hollow drill steel in common use in Australia; and an estimation is made of the dry fatigue limits at various points along a drill rod.It is shown that these calculations predict failure at a 'point where failure rarely occurs, and do not predict that failure should occur where it does in practice. The reasons for this anomaly lie in the neglect of bending stresses in the stress calculations, and in failuredue to corrosion fatigue at a preferred section rather than to simpler fatigue under non-corrosive conditions.INTRODUCTIONIt has long been recognized that failure of metal sections by fatigue is influenced both by the number of cycles of stress imparted to the section (N) and by the magnitude of this cyclic stress (8). In this paper, both Nand Shave been calculated for rods which have failed in service, and whose operating history is known. While the calculation of the number of cycles to failure is·simple, the calculation of stress is more complex. The results of stress caIculations predict that failure should occur only hi short rods, and then preferentially at the tip end rather than the shank end.However, in actual fatigue failures of steel rock drill rods, approximately 75 per cent. of such failures are close to the shank end, and failures near the tip end are rare.The usual explanation given for this high incidence of shank-end failures is that at the point of failure there exists, in forged collar steels of the type common in Australia "hardness valley" or. Froth flotation relies on an attractive force between a particle and a bubble to selectively extract particles from a mixture. The range and magnitude of this attractive force is an area of ongoing investigation. We describe measurements of the effect of dissolved gases on the long-range attractive surface forces between a silica plate and a glass sphere in aqueous octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (C18TACl) solutions. The measurements follow on the work of Sakamoto et al (2002) who have concluded that long-range interactions occur in air-equilibrated surfactant solutions but not in degassed solutions. In the present work, we have measured attractive forces that have a much larger in magnitude than the expected van der Waals force in solutions that were degassed by the same procedure used by Sakamoto et al (2002). We find that the forces are most attractive at 5 + 10-6 M C18TACl, which is close to the charge compensation point (ccp) of the glass sphere. At this concentration, the attractive force decays exponentially with distance and the decay length is 34 in air-saturated solution, and 38 nm in degassed solutions. In both air-equilibrated and degassed solution, the force is quite sensitive to the concentration of surfactant. The force is also sensitive to the pH. We note that our degassing procedure increases the pH of the solution from about 5.7 to 6.6 (presumably by removal of dissolved CO2). We find that the forces measured in degassed solution can be reproduced by using a solution that was equilibrated in air, then the pH was increased by addition of NaOH. Therefore, we conclude that the main effect of degassing in our experiments is to raise the pH. We show that the range and magnitude of the attractive force decreases in the presence of salt (NaCl). This suggests an electrostatic mechanism for the attraction. Possible mechanisms for the attractive force are examined, including the mechanisms that rely on a patchy coverage of surfactant on the silica surface.

Operation of a pilot heavy medium separation plant allows flexibility of operation not normally possible in an operating plant. Much useful data can be obtained, although some limitations apply. Projects carried out at AMDEL have included HMC separations at 1.5 to 3.6 specific gravity, comparative operation of HMC and DWP separators and the use of fine feed and product screens. Investigations of this type have provided a considerable amount of information on HMS plant performance and characteristics under a wide range of operating conditions.

The term Engineer of Record (EoR) is commonly used in North America and South Africa to define the responsible person for the design, construction and operational phases of a tailings storage facility (TSF). Recently, this role has been elevated in prominence within Australia, but what does it really mean? Recent updates to international TSF guidelines suggests appointing an EoR is good practice, but where does the responsibilities of the EoR start and finish. Interestingly, both Samarco and Mount Polley failures had active EoR’s in place. This suggests that nominating an EoR alone, is not the full answer to mitigating the potential for a TSF failure. Appropriate construction and operational practices are key to the success of the design of TSFs, where all too often, operators ignore the operating plans developed by the designer. To be successful, a key consideration of the EoR role, is involvement in the operational phase of the TSF. This requires ‘buy-in’ from the mine managers and a change in the way TSFs are perceived by site. This paper explores how the roles and responsibilities of the EoR can assist in improving governance of TSFs if implemented effectively and what role the client has to ensure the success of the EoR.

Mine site rehabilitation generally includes the re-shaping of overburden to create a final landform, manipulation of substrates and subsequent revegetation. Due to the wide range of environmental variables that influence rehabilitation progression, having clearly-stated final land-use goals and ongoing significant contributions to the planning process, from prefeasibility through to mine closure, is essential for achieving stable landforms and sustainable rehabilitated communities. Two examples of rehabilitation processes in the phosphate rich region of North West Queensland are used to illustrate some of the possible benefits of early planning and communication of rehabilitation requirements.Approximately 160 km south of Mount Isa, Incitec Pivot Limited operates a 35 year old open cut mine at Phosphate Hill. Monitoring of rehabilitation areas and selected analogue sites is undertaken annually, but the initial landform design, substrate management and species selection has created a difficult environment for revegetated areas to successfully establish. Constant management input (such as weed management, erosion control, supplementary seeding, etc) will, therefore, be required over a long time frame.The second example uses exploratory drilling and historic costean pits at Legend International HoldingÆs Paradise South site, 135 km north of Mount Isa, to determine the success of natural vegetation colonisation on waste rock and compacted soils, and the effects of cattle grazing on recolonisation. This information can be used by planners of the mine life to inform possible end-land use decisions and proposed completion criteria.In a semi-arid environment such as North West Queensland, the creation of a post-mine landscape suitable for nature conservation and/or grazing can be an arduous task. The input from environmental personnel at all stages of the mining process will positively impact upon the quality of the resulting rehabilitation and ensure undesirable legacy issues are minimised.CITATION:Gillespie, M J and Erskine, P D, 2012. Managing productivity and improving efficiency for a healthy return on capital employed have become key mining industry strategies under prevailing tough global market conditions. However, achieving this in a multisystem environment such as a mining operation can be daunting. The field of discrete event simulation offers some relief, giving engineering teams insight into multivariable systems and stochastic processes. It allows for integrated system thinking and domain expertise to be woven into project thinking fibre. Directed system optimisation and therefore improved efficiency becomes possible. Furthermore, capital discipline accrues from optimal upgrade investments. This paper illustrates the practical application of this approach by reviewing a typical case study for a direct shipping iron ore operation. Dynamic simulation was used to establish maximum processing plant capacity under varying material characteristics and identify capital-efficient upgrades for increasing production.The study started with descriptive statistical analysis of existing data. Discrete equipment and system capacities were defined, followed by static plant mass balance calculations to establish bottlenecks and overall static capacity. Equipment ‘uptime’ and ‘downtime’ analyses established system and overall plant availability and utilisation. From this information, a dynamic simulation model could then be developed and initially calibrated against actual plant performance to verify its robustness. Once confirmed to accurately represent existing plant dynamics, system capacity response to variable changes could be tested to ultimately determine maximum plant capacity. Additionally, plant optimisation was incorporated to arrive at optimal upgrade points. Maximum capacity and necessary upgrades were established as a function primarily of feed size distribution. Additionally, the interfacing effects of rehandling feed material to the final product grade and potentially to life-of-mine were established as important outcomes. In recent years, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling of mechanically stirred flotation cells has been used to study the complexity of the flow within the cells. In CFD modelling, the flotation cell is discretised into individual finite volumes where local values of flow properties are calculated. The flotation effect is studied as three subprocesses including collision, attachment and detachment. In the present work, these subprocesses are modelled in a laboratory flotation cell. The flotation kinetics involving a population balance for particles in a semi-batch process has been developed. From turbulent collision models, the local rates of bubble-particle encounters have been estimated from the local turbulent velocities. The probabilities of collision, adhesion and stabilisation have been calculated at each location in the flotation cell. The net rate of attachment, after accounting for detachments, has been used in the kinetic model involving transient CFD simulations with removal of bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer. Comparison of the predicted fraction of particles remaining in the cell and the fraction of free particles to the total number of particles remaining in the cell indicates that the particle recovery rate to the pulp-froth interface is much slower than the net attachment rates. For the case studied, the results indicate that the bubbles are loaded with particles quite quickly, and that the bubble surface area flux is the limiting factor in the recovery rate at the froth interface. This explains why the relationship between flotation rate and bubble surface area flux is generally used as a criterion for designing flotation cells. The predicted flotation rate constants also indicate that fine and large particles do not float as well as intermediate sized particles of 120 - 240 ¦m range. This is consistent with the flotation recovery generally observed in flotation practice. The magnitude of the flotation rate constants obtained by CFD modelling indicates that transport rates of the bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer contribute quite significantly to the overall flotation rate and this is likely to be the case especially in plant-scale equipment.

The debate on the mechanism of adsorption of gold and silver di-cyanide onto activated carbon could be divided into two schools of thought. On the one hand, it has been proposed that the combined effects of electrostatic and chemical interaction between the activated carbon surface and adsorbing gold di-cyanide anion results in the adsorption of the latter. On the other hand the `ion-pair' adsorption reaction mechanism has been vigorously advocated as the dominant mechanism responsible for the adsorption of gold di-cyanide onto activated carbon. It is maintained that gold is adsorbed onto the carbon surface as the neutral ion-pair [M"+][Au(CN)z ]". Adsorption is viewed as the result of mainly the chemical interaction while electrostatic interactions are neglected. The validity of the `ion-pair' adsorption mechanism may be challenged on a number of counts. However, the alternative mechanism (based on aqueous surface chemistry principles) has not gained general acceptance yet, because it has not been applied widely enough to explain the different adsorption phenomena associated with gold di-cyanide on activated carbon. In the present study the case in favour of an adsorption mechanism based on general aqueous surface chemistry principles is presented. A model framework is developed for the adsorption reaction mechanism of gold di-cyanide onto activated carbon which incorporates the effects of chemical and electrostatic interactions between the dissolved species, the aqueous solution and the carbon surface. This model is then employed to explain a wide variety of reported adsorption phenomena for gold di-cyanide on activated carbon, such as the effects of pH, the adsorption of different metal cyano complexes, ionic strength, and type and concentration of cations in solution. In addition the effects of cyanide and dissolved oxygen concentration were investigated. No ready explanation, in terms of aqueous surface chemistry principles, is yet available for the switch in adsorption behaviour that agrees with ion exchange to ion-pair adsorption with increasing ionic strength.

The earth is a planet limited in size and limited in total resources. For the forseeable future, it is the only available habitat for mankind. Therefore, it follows that the more we know about our planet the better we can utilize its space and its resources for our well-being now and in the future. But, to accomplish this, we need reliable basic information. Geosciences provide such information. Recently, Dr. M. King Hubbert took note of the important effect of the geosciences on society, on how we think, and how we live. In the first century of modern geology, 1780- 1880, the influence of geology was primarily on how we think, i.e. changing our concept of the earth from one with a short catastrophic history to one that developed gradually over enormous spans of time. In the second century, 1880-1980, the emphasis was on how we live, on expanding the knowledge base so that we could more easily find and utilize the earth's resources. Now, in the third century, i.e. from 1980 towards the year 2000 and beyond, we should concentrate on both how we think and how we live; i.e. how we can better estimate potential global' resources and how we can manage these resources for maximum benefit to mankind. Like other sciences, the geosciences build upon what has already been done. Progress is achieved by using the thoughts, measurements, and observations of past workers, adding to these the insights from new experiments and from new concepts. Geology has its own methodology and approaches; but more than most sciences, it calls also upon the tools of physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, and biology to help solve its problems. Today's increasing population, increasing industrialization, and increasing complexity of modern society demand more detailed geoscience information so as to better use the land, reduce geological hazards, provide an inventory of resources, facilitate waste disposal, and prepare for long-term effects such as changes in climate and sea level.
