Blackwater Mine is in the central-southern Bowen Basin, immediately south of the township of Blackwater on the Capricorn Highway. The current open cut operation extracts coal from three main seams, designated Top, Middle and Lower, in the Late Permian Rangal Coal Measures cropping out on the eastern flank of the Comet Ridge. Complex geological structures, dominated by E-W normal faults and N-S reverse faults, have significant detrimental effects on coal mining operations. Historical exploration before 2010 involved several types of drilling only to understand structure, coal quality and washability. Hence, although drilling data was combined with limited pit mapping and observation, unknown structures were still often encountered during excavations and led to mining surprises. In 2010 BHP completed 200-line km of closely spaced 2D seismic survey to capture gross and detailed structures followed by fit for purpose structural drilling to confirm major structures in the northern part of the mine. In 2018 a high density 9.2 km2 3D seismic survey was completed in the southern part of the mine. Subsequently, a 17.2 km2 survey was completed in 2020 to cover the northern active mining area. It allowed geoscientists to successfully map previously unknown major faults and seam splits, which could potentially impact the mineability of the area. It is important to note, that faults interpreted using modern high-density 3D data can be interpreted with dramatically higher confidence in the fault dip and azimuth orientation in comparison to the legacy 2D data. Along with targeted drilling, pit mapping and structural interpretation, the outcome adds value to mine planning and operations. This paper outlines recent successful seismic 3D data acquisition and interpretation. In detail, the paper presents case studies on how the data can be incorporated into a structural model to improve geological knowledge, enable geotechnical assessment, and support safe and efficient coal mining in a large and structurally complex mine.

Under platform exhaust (UPE) systems are often designed into metro stations as a means of removing heat generated by trains as they come to a halt in the platform. These systems are designed to extract heat from the brakes and brake resistors directly at the source in order to capture as much heat as possible before it can enter the public areas of the station, or contribute to the temperature build-up in the tunnels. Due to space requirements for the associated duct and air handling units, the UPE plays a significant role in the geometric design of the platform and station as a whole.In recent years questions have arisen as to the effectiveness of UPE systems. However, very little data is available for designers to use when making important decisions on the station designs for new metro systems. This is important as significant savings could be achieved by omitting or re-designing these systems for new build stations; not only due to the capital costs of space provision for the duct itself but also due to the associated operation and maintenance cost of the UPE system.This paper will present recent measurements of the UPE system of the Copenhagen metro together with one-dimensional (1D) simulations, looking at typical dispersion of heat into the station plenum box and air exchange through draught relief shafts as the train enters the station in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the UPE system. The aim of this paper is to disseminate the results of measurements and analysis to increase awareness of the issue and to provide discussion relevant to designers in their evaluation of heat removal systems in new build station designs.

The method for design of primary roof support for the large todoidal cavern constructed to house the Sydney Opera House parking station is presented. The cavern was constructed with 5 m of rock cover beneath Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. Design of rock reinfonnent using a combination of fully grouted rock dowels and Macalloy bars was based on control of horizontal shear movement along bedding features in the roof. A combination of linear arch type analyses and non-linear jointed finite element analyses were used in the design study together with an analysis of the shear resistance offered by fully grouted bolts under shear deformation.

Two adjacent open pits in Mali hosted by deeply weathered saprolitic materials were mined consecutively over the course of approximately 12 months. During excavation, both pits experienced significant displacement and tension cracking as the result of deeper than expected depth of weathering coupled with relatively steep slope angles and significant groundwater. In response, geotechnical and operations teams overcame numerous monitoring challenges with prisms and radar to develop a simple and effective monitoring system coupled to a Trigger Action Response Plan (TARP) which enabled continued safe operations while reducing ore loss. Observations of previous slope performance of these two pits allowed for greater confidence in empirical failure runout calculations that was used to specify the standoff widths for the exclusion zones in the pit. Back analysis of the slope as-built performance after the first indications of slope distress was also conducted. The back analysis was used to confirm rock mass parameters for modelling while being utilised as a reality check for the stability analysis. The stability analysis indicated that leaving a large step-out or buttress would not prevent the displacement, resulting in some ore being sacrificed to ensure the safety of personnel. Key learnings from this experience highlight the importance of: • up-to-date geological interpretation of the depth of weathering • ensuring slope design guidance is reviewed and updated as latest information (ie geology and monitoring) is received • having multiple complementary slope monitoring methods to ensure redundancy • ensuring visual observations and as-built performance are utilised as a reality check to provide greater confidence in stability analysis and design guidance.

Mochia mine, in culmination of depillaring operations, fired India's largest underground pillar blast consuming 145 tonnes of explosive and yielding 0.55 million tonnes of ore in June 1994. To protect main mine structures (situated at a distance of 250 to 350 m from the blast site) from resultant ground vibrations, the charge per delay was restricted to 2300 kg. The post-blast observations revealed that no damage was caused to these structures. However, the damage assessment survey of the mine workings situated in close proximity revealed a general trend in consonance with the distance from the blast and found to be well correlated with peak particle velocity.

The Hauraki Volcanic Region of the North Island developed between 18 and 1.9 Ma. Initial andesitic volcanism from 18 to 12 Ma was followed by 12 to 1.9 Ma volcanic activity that included rhyolitic, dacitic, andesitic, and basaltic compositions, with a gradual migration of activity to the SSE. Early andesitic volcanism evolved over the course of 8 m.y. to more silicic compositions; this trend was reset and repeated by post-10 Ma andesitic volcanism. Early and later andesites are otherwise remarkably similar in trace element composition. Rhyolites have the most diverse compositions, suggesting a major role for crustal input in their formation.

The mining industry has expanded significantly in the Pacific Region over the past two decades through a mix of new developments and brownfields expansions of existing operations. Despite this overall success there are also a number of well publicised examples of less than successful minerals ventures. These problem developments highlight the fact that success cannot be taken for granted and that rigorous planning and attention to detail is essential. The dominant growth has come through expansion of existing businesses, notably alumina, iron ore and coal, achieved through both efficiency gains on existing plant and step change capacity additions such as new mines and/or expanded processing plant. This expansion has largely been linked to increased market opportunities. The major issues are the quality and extent of the host resource, achieving the market targets, and the efficiency of the expansion effort. There can be also a range of site specific issues which need to be addressed. The development of new greenfields operations is often more complex as it can bring a wide range of new issues. Depending on the nature of the development, and the companies involved, these can extend from initial financing through to obtaining a market position. Incorporating major new technology and/or establishing infrastructure and attracting staff to remote locations can also add significant challenges. This paper outlines many of the critical factors which need to be considered prior to proceeding with major expansions or greenfields developments. These will be linked to a number of developments in the region over the past decade.

In the current cycle of low commodity prices and rising costs, mine managers continue to focus on optimising mine performance and productivity. A critical component of strengthening performance and productivity is ensuring material is routed correctly and efficiently through the core mine production activities of drilling, blasting and grade control.By the time a blast is planned, an enormous amount of intellectual property has been invested in the exploration, resource development, feasibility studies and mine planning activities. The value of that knowledge is either realised or diminished during mine production. Efficient execution of the process is critical and is reflected by the quality and timeliness of the information produced.Multiple teams are involved in the mining extraction process. These teams are all under time pressure to keep the mine equipment operating. One of the root causes of this pressure is the dependency between the teams. They do not operate in isolation, but are a link in a chain depending on the outcomes of each activity. It is essential communication is efficient so tasks can be completed according to the production schedule. Unfortunately, communication fails when unintegrated systems are used because of:- different teams seeing different data, hence there is not an overall, up-to-date view of progress and priorities- lack of cross-functional visibility of data leading to failure to identify errors in time to address or correct issues- teams tending to be siloed and focusing on their part of the process rather than the overall objective.With different systems used for the parts of a common goal, supervisors and managers lack visibility of the process. This makes it difficult to identify process improvement opportunities.Streamlined communications help consolidate all data and activities resulting in improved cooperation between mine production teams. This outcome increases the confidence and efficiency of material routing decisions. It also reduces potential impact to mine performance from errors in early stage tasks like drilling and grade control. Understanding watercourses and river processes at a landscape scale is vital for managing risk to mining infrastructure and operations as well as minimising future environmental impacts beyond the life of the mine. Recognising this, Iluka Resources Limited engaged Alluvium Consulting Australia to identify and characterise watercourses across several neighbouring mineral tenements in the Eucla Basin, South Australia (Alluvium, 2013, 2014a, 2014b). The objective of the studies was to inform planning for risk management during mine planning and operation and appropriate landscape rehabilitation for mine closure.Mining operations in the area are by open cut extraction of mineral sands. The extracted resource is processed on-site before leaving the site for export. Several pits are to be developed in stages with simultaneous backfilling and surface reinstatement. Mining is initially taking place in the Jacinth tenement, where up to 100 km of watercourses may be directly or indirectly impacted (refer to Figure 1).The total study area (shown in Figure 1) is approximately 330 km2 and spans three smaller areas that were the focus of separate investigations during mine planning.CITATION:Ferguson, C, White, K, Harding, M and Hardie, R, 2016. "The paper introduces the structure and work processes of outside auger hollow claw tipped mechanical sampler for coal. Twenty sets of claw tipped sampler performance tests show that: The design of inner hollow cylinder-type (?180 mm) can ensure to take a coal sample with nominal top size of 60 mm. Built-in self-cleaning piston pusher ensures no adherence and blocking of the sample. The operation practices show that the mechanical sampler can operate in order for taking coal sample with up to 16 per cent of total moisture. Claw closing design can avoid sample leaking or spilling during the claw lifting and ensure the integrity of primary increment. Ultrasonic positioning device makes the sampler capture the materials no less than 10 cm from the bottom of the wagons, basically meeting the requirement taking full depth of the sample. The precision and bias test indicates that the moisture and ash have no relative bias under the sampling process; the sampling precision is in accordance with the requirement in IS013909.At present, the spiral mechanical sampler is widely used for coal sampling but there are many limitations during application, for example: It is difficult to capture a large size sample, so the size range of a coal sample taken is limited. There is easy adhering or blocking for high moisture coal, which will result in the mixture of different increments, wear of sampler and the difficulties for cleaning and maintenance of sampler. It is difficult to capture the coal sample at lower than 30 cm from the bottom of the wagons, in order to avoid damage of the vehicle. It is possible for coal sample loss and spilling during the sampler lifting, due to the unsealed sampler.For the outside auger hollow claw tipped mechanical sampler designed for solving the above problems, the opening distance of the claw is the opening size of the sampler and makes the size range of the coal sample to be taken wide. During sampling, the two pieces of claws open and the sampler rotates vertically downward to capture an adequate coal sample after reaching the specific point. Then the two pieces of claws close tight automatically to ensure there is no coal leaking or spilling. OZ Minerals' Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator is located 650 km north-west of Adelaide in the Gawler Craton of South Australia. The concentrator was built in 2008 and commenced commercial production in early 2009. The Prominent Hill concentrator is comprised of a conventional grinding and flotation processing plant with a design capacity of 8 Mtpa. The flotation circuit includes six rougher cells, an IsaMill for regrinding the rougher concentrate and a Jameson cell preceding the three stage conventional cell cleaner circuit.Since its commissioning, the Prominent Hill flotation circuit has been the focus of a series of projects aimed at continual performance improvement. This has been achieved by a systematic approach of project identification, evaluation and implementation which has led to a progressive improvement in flotation performance. Innovations that have been successfully implemented include aspects of cell design and operation, and reagent suite optimisation.Improvements to the mechanical cells initially focused on the installation of a modified rotor-stator design in the rougher circuit, as recommended by Outotec. Isolated cells were fitted with this technology and proven to provide a benefit for copper recovery before the design was trialled in subsequent cells along the bank. Based on this success, further modifications were made to other aspects of the rougher and cleaner cells.Laboratory trials conducted at Prominent Hill involve a screening process identifying potential reagents from a list of products, which are then rigorously tested in the laboratory before one is selected for trial in the concentrator. Where these reagents have demonstrated a statistical improvement in performance they have typically been incorporated permanently into the flotation circuit. Mining and mineral processing makes a vital contribution to AustraliaÆs national export income, and our society today is critically dependent on its products. Despite the importance of this industry, its operations often come under scrutiny because of its high potential impact on local environments û both social and ecological. The challenge for the minerals industry today is to make the most responsible and best possible use of the national resource base, maximising overall resource utilisation.Research efforts and industry implementation of improvements have been moving in this direction for a considerable time already, and the industry has a long history of process innovation and improvement in Australia. Examples range from the early development of gold cyanidation and mineral flotation to more recent work undertaken under the auspices of AMIRA or through the various CRCs and research organisations such as the AJ Parker CRC for Hydrometallurgy, the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre.However, the nature of research and innovation in the mining and mineral processing sector is changing, as the industry itself copes with the pressures introduced by globalisation, industry consolidation and commodity price cycles. Large firms that have historically maintained a tradition of corporate technology and a culture of innovation are moving to outsource their technological and research competencies and are adopting æfast-followerÆ mentalities. At the same time, the challenges of sustainable development that need to be addressed are many-faceted, multidisciplinary, and require a holistic approach for significant achievements to be realised. Many sustainability issues, particularly those pertaining to environmental and safety issues, are shared across large sections of the minerals industry, and are seen as æindustryÆ problems beyond the scope of a single company.In this environment, collaborative research efforts are becoming the dominant mechanisms for building on past innovations and ensuring the continued success of the mining and mineral processing industries within a framework of sustainable development.

In today’s mining environment the use of heavy mechanical devices and other high-tech electronic devices like two-way radios, cellular phones and even automated mining systems, form a vital part of the daily operations of a mining site. These human-made devices and some of the naturally occurring events, like lightning and gamma radiation, can have negative effects on electronic detonators and the associated control equipment.On larger mining operations the necessity to move the point of safety for blasting further away from the blast area, introduced remote firing via radio frequencies for electronic detonator systems. Other influences on electronic detonators can be abuse or ignorance. To ensure the safety of the end-user, an electronic detonator must be resistant to some common mistakes that users can make. One of main concerns here is resistance to static discharge or incorrect wiring. Despite the daily use of electronic detonator solutions, scepticism and concern still exists amongst those who believe the system raises the risk of a premature initiation of the blast through some form of interference trigger.This paper will help users understand how electronic detonators and the associated control equipment protects itself from external influences. Focus will be on protection schemes to counter static and over-voltage discharge and methods to ensure protection of secure wireless radio links and detonator communications. With well engineered communication systems and solid static and over-voltage protection, an electronic detonator system can be more reliable and safer than other detonator systems. The following main points will be discussed:what makes a detonator an electronic detonator,static electricity and over-voltage protection,the general influence of electromagnetic energy on the detonator,the influence of lightning on detonators,the protection of radio communication’s links as used by remote firing equipment, andthe safety protection features built into remote firing equipment.

Sustainable closure of coal mines in Australia to a safe, stable, non-polluting condition remains one of the industry’s biggest environmental and social challenges. A significant proportion of mines in the Bowen Basin of Queensland have dispersive spoil. Based on an estimated area of 20,000ha and a rehabilitation cost of AUD$100,000 to AUD$150,000/ha, the instantaneous rehabilitation liability for the Bowen Basin alone is estimated at AUD$2 to $3 billion.Dispersive spoils present problems in post-mining rehabilitated landforms due to increased potential for surface and tunnel erosion, compromising the ability to achieve fundamental mine closure objectives of a safe, stable, non-polluting and self-sustaining post-mining landform (Minserve, 2004). The last 20 years have seen a dramatic rise in the use of 3D visualisation and modelling for geological data, but there has been relatively little effort to do the same for the variogram models that underpin the standard estimation algorithms used by the mining industry.For kriging, one of the most used geostatistical estimation methods, specifying a variogram model is a critical part of the modelling process. Experimental variography is the primary method for approximating the theoretical variogram function from the available sample data, and then determining an appropriate variogram model from the approximations.The traditional tools used for experimental variography are limited to looking at subsets of the data and are often presented without reference to geographic space and geology. It can be difficult to know what input data is being used for a particular experimental variogram, and whether there is enough support in the experimental variograms to propose an appropriate model.To overcome these limitations, an innovative approach called situational variography has been proposed that visualises variograms in 3D alongside contextual geological and geometric data. Presenting variograms in this manner aids understanding of how the spatial variance relates to the underlying data.A 3D extension of the 2D radial variogram maps will be investigated which allows for dynamic exploration of the full experimental variogram cloud. As mobile equipment electrification in underground mining continues to gain popularity, control ofheat and humidity in the workplace is becoming a key driver in sizing of ventilation and mine aircooling systems. For design and sizing of ventilation and cooling systems to be accurate, and for themine mobile equipment fleet to be sized appropriately to meet production goals, vehicle productivitymetrics, heat modelling, and energy balances for electrified fleets need to consider operation througha realistic duty cycle that is reflective of various tasks performed during a shift.The authors conducted a real-world comparison of two 8 cubic yard (14 metric tonne) class Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) machines – one diesel and one battery-electric vehicle (BEV) – performingidentical muck-haul-dump operations on consecutive days at an underground nickel/copper hardrock mine in Ontario, Canada.The battery-electric LHD averaged 8.9 per cent faster cycle time than the diesel vehicle (gross,without accounting for charging time), and was able to transport 25 per cent more material per cycledue to a larger bucket capacity. When including the charging time, average net cycle times wereequivalent for the two vehicles over the 200 cycles. The BEV carried more payload over the eighthour period due to the increased capacity per cycle.The testing identified an approximately five-fold reduction in heat output from the BEV in comparisonto the diesel LHD on a basis of heat output per tonne of rated bucket capacity. Heat output from thefast charger was found to be approximately 4 per cent of the charging rate, with negligibletemperature change observed in the main drift. External noise levels in the mine were found to be14 dB lower for the BEV during transit and 11 dB lower during bucket loading. Fuel/energy costs forBEV electricity input were approximately four times lower per operating hour than diesel fuel costbased on typical 2021 electrical and diesel unit rates for a grid-connected mine in Ontario, Canada.

A narrow (200-300m) zone of amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks underlies the Papuan ophiolite near the Musa-Kumusi divide, SW of Popondetta, Oro Province. The amphibolite rocks are bounded up-section, to the NE, by peridotite and gabbro of the ophiolite; and down-section, to the SW, by mafic greenschist, which in turn overlies blueschist facies mafic schists of the Emo Metamorphics.Amphibole compositions within the narrow contact zone show a strong chemical zonation which reflects a steep thermal gradient, with maximum temperatures >800¦C at the peridotite contact. Advances in technology now allow geotechnical practitioners to better describe the properties and variability of a rock mass through advances in surface and underground mapping, borehole technology and geophysical imaging. Yet the way in which practitioners use this data is not being realised to its full potential and the quality and quantity of data that is collected is often superior to the conventional design approaches that are typically adopted. A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach provides the ideal basis for using this data to generate geologically-realistic rock mass models based on parameters derived from field data, which more effectively capture the variability and rock mass behaviour. However, until recently, the DFN approach has mainly been applied to cave mining and small-scale models associated with synthetic rock mass modelling or groundwater flow modelling for the nuclear waste and oil and gas industries.Ground support design for blocky rock masses in Australia is often dealt with in a rather traditional manner, adopting either an observational empirical approach through rock mass classification systems or conventional wedge stability analysis techniques. Using these methods requires several generalised assumptions about the rock mass fabric and excavation geometry. As such, the support system is often designed for a worst-case scenario based on a predetermined risk tolerance that the mine is willing to accept and a design block size that is generally determined by the proposed excavation dimension.A study by Doumis (2014) used conventional wedge stability analysis and the probabilistic key block analysis software JBlock (Esterhuizen, 1996) to estimate potential block sizes and support requirements. A DFN approach has also been adopted at Callie underground mine using FracMan™ software (Golder Associates, 2014). In addition to volatile commodity prices influencing decision making, in recent years, social and environmental performance have become important decision drivers within the mining industry. There are increased demands from stakeholders, communities, and governments to ensure that raw materials are mined, processed and refined responsibly. The industry also faces the challenge of better managing its waste, which has led to severe consequences when not done properly. The high commodity prices of the late 90s and early 2000s encouraged larger economies of scale and drove mining companies to extract large volumes of rock for separation and concentration at the downstream processes. Over time, as ore grades dropped, the cost of mining escalated and tailings volumes grew. This arduous process also caused strains on recovery cost and performance. Scarcity of water and energy resources coupled with increased production demands and higher operating costs are putting pressure on companies to find innovative ways to increase mining intensities. Hatch’s value chain optimisation methodologies, specifically Grade Engineering® and early waste rejection of the mine, have been of interest to intensify operational performance and minimise waste generation. Enabling preconcentration of the plant throughput, the methodology has significant potential to improve overall metal production and reduce water and energy intensities, whilst minimising wet tailings. Using representative data from real world mines, this paper reports on a case study that evaluates the impact of preconcentration using sensor-based ore sorting on downstream process improvements as well as energy, water and tailings reduction. Financial and economic viability of this technique is presented for both brownfield and greenfield implementation cases. The results show that business case for preconcentration is best when: the distribution of metal in the run of mine ore is negatively skewed and left tailed; mining costs are low; energy, water and tailings management costs are high; and low cost methods of recovering pay metal from low grade material are available.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of froth fl otation for the recovery of gold from the gravity tailing stream of the former Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) operation in Ballarat. The P80 of the tailings was determined by screen analysis as 1 mm, with test work conducted on as received material along with samples ground to P80 sizes of 47, 78 and 134 microns. Laboratory scale batch flotation tests were conducted at both natural and elevated pH to investigate the impact of pyrite depression on gold recovery. Results indicated that although an increase in grade from approximately 0.7 g/t to 3 g/t was achievable at a natural pH and a P80 of 134 micron, gold recovery was low at just 35 per cent. Finer grind sizes were found to have an adverse effect on both grade and recovery. Future efforts will be focused on the sub 310 micron size fraction of the tailings, which was revealed to contain approximately 85 per cent of the available gold and may be amenable to cyanidation or ultra-fine gravity treatment.
