Underground mining in the Bowen Seam has shown that the majority of outbursts have co- incided with faults, igneous dykes and sills, stone roof rolls or some combination of these. The coal measures are deformed principally by N- S trending, easterly dipping thrusts presumed to he associated with the major, reverse Collins- ville Fault. The old Collinsville State Mine records suggest that thrusts and strike-slip faults have been common sites of outbursts. In contrast, normal faults have not been outburst- prone. Detailed geological mapping in Bowen No. 2 Colliery 53 east and west panels has been carried out in the hanging wall of a thrust zone of 6.1 m throw. The associated sheared coal has been defined and several fracture sets delin- eated. Sheared coal can be observed up to 170 m from this thrust zone, but this is dependent on the vitrinite content of the upper seam section worked. Fvidence indicates that outbursts have crnrroJ only in extremely sheared coal. Curious spherical- to cylindrical-shaped c,,.31 ohjects ("apples" and "rods") are related to the deformation in the vicinity of the thrust zone. Comminution Kinetics equations are developed to take into account difference of grindability of mineral components. The equations describing both batch and closed circuit grinding or crushing processes are given. These equations are applied to industrial data to derive comminution kinetic and classification characteristics of the component minerals in a multi-mineral ore. Control strategy based on these concepts is presented.

Hydraulic transport of coal has been used for many years on the West Coast of New Zealand to extract small blocks of steeply dipping coal. Recent development at Strongman 2 Mine has seen the use of high pressure monitors to cut coal and a corresponding increase in the scale of production.This paper provides a brief introduction to hydraulic mining, describes the present system used at Strongman 2 and discusses future potential development.

Batu Hijau is a porphyry copper-gold deposit located on Sumbawa Island in the western Banda Arc of Indonesia. The deposit has been evaluated from 54000m of drilling in 105 diamond drill holes over a surface area of 1.2km2 and to a depth of 1000m below surface (412m below sea level). A provisional plan is being evaluated to mine 642 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.61% Cu and 0.55g/t Au (variable cutoff) from an open pit in the higher grade portion of the resource. The deposit is associated with a caic-alkaline intrusive complex that was emplaced in a thick sequence of andesitic pyroclastic rocks. The oldest and most widespread intrusion is porphyritic to medium-grained, equigranular, quartz hornblende diorite. At Batu Hijau the western diorite contact zone was intruded by two phases of tonalite. The older tonalite is a stock increasing from 200m diameter at surface to 500m at sea level. It consists of quartz, plagioclase and hornblende phenocrysts set in a groundmass of similar composition. A younger tonalite intrudes the tonalite stock, quartz and plagioclase phenocrysts are more abundant and it has a finer groundmass than the older tonalite. Brecciation occurs near the older tonalite contacts but there are no breccia pipes or late-stage features such as pebbldykes or postmineralisation intrusive rocks.

This paper examines the fire life systems implemented in two existing tunnels and discusses whether the standards used were appropriate. It focuses on the Terrace Tunnel as this upgrade and refurbishment is complete.The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) manages six tunnels on the State Highway network with two of these built in the last seven years. The Terrace Tunnel, opened in 1978, was refurbished with modern fire life safety systems in 2010–2012. An interim upgrade of the Mt Victoria Tunnel, opened in 1931, was also carried out at this time.In present times, few existing tunnels have undergone significant upgrades and refurbishments. The Terrace Tunnel required: new power supplies, control buildings, lighting, wall panels and jet fans, a deluge system, emergency exit lights and way-finding lights, a public address (PA) system, a radio rebroadcast system, lane control sign (LCS) and variable message sign (VMS), an over-height detection system (OHD) and a new tunnel management system.In the absence of suitable guidelines, various standards were used to carry out the refurbishment. The Austroad Guide to Road Tunnels and AS4825 Tunnel Fire Safety, although designed for new tunnels and not specifically intended for existing tunnels, provided a framework. A multi-criteria assessment of risk (MCAT) was carried out to determine the systems to be provided.The Terrace Tunnel has perhaps set a benchmark for refurbishing existing tunnels as few projects of this type have been completed recently. A new high tensile strength, steel cable, that may be grouted into boreholes has been developed for use as rode reinforcement. The manufacturing technique produces a birdcage pattern in which the cross section varies along the length of the cable. The load transfer from cement grouts to birdcage cables has been demonstrated in laboratory tests to be better than that of standard 15.2 mm diameter seven wire cables. The manufacturing process also allows for a wide range of capacities which may be specified by design engineers. The various birdcage cable configurations have been applied as rock reinforcement in a number of Australian underground and surface mines.

Mining the Carpathia orebody at the Ardlethan tin mine in the late 1970s involved an innovative approach to underground mining which stretched the limits of drilling and blasting techniques. Holes of up to 95 m in length were drilled and blasted from the surface to extract an orebody which extended from 45 m to approximately 95 m below surface. This approach resulted in the elimination of an underground drilling sublevel, thus minimising the costs and hazards associated with underground drilling and blasting. Now, almost 30 years on, this method would probably still be the most appropriate choice.

There have been many published mathematical models that, to varying degrees of sophistication, attempt to describe dynamic thickener behaviour. CSIRO has undertaken to develop a model under industry sponsorship. Recently developed instruments such as the floc density analyser and natural gamma-ray gauge have enabled new data to be collected from plant thickeners for model validation and development. The principles behind the use of the natural gamma-ray gauge are described and the possibilities for its use as a control instrument in the bed have been examined. A simple nomograph illustrates how the gamma-ray gauge data can be used to predict steady state underflow consistency and bed Position.

The Maragorik prospect is an example of high sulphidation, Cu/Au mineralisation occurring at a high level in the hydrothermal system. As extensive ash deposits blanket the region, controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT), in conjunct-ion with bulldozer trenching, have been used to delineate subsurface geology. Fluid upflow has occurred along EW structures dilated by rotation on the bounding major NW lineaments. Rising hydrothermal fluids have exploited permeable horizons in contact with the upflow structures. This lithological control is evident as ledges of silicification and peripheral clay alteration, at high levels in the system. As is typical of high sulphidation systems, a two phase fluid consists of an initial rapidly moving vapour-dominated phase, followed by a liquid-dominated phase. Much of the zoned and overprinted silica to clay alteration is developed from the vapour-dominated fluid. Mineral deposition occurs as a result of brecciation of the competent silic-ification by liquid phase fluids. Such mineralisation is of restricted volume in ledges proximal to the feeder structures.The style of alteration and mineralisation are indicative of a very low temperature and hence a high level system. Thus, although high sulphid-ation systems are inferred to develop from porphyry-related magmatic fluids, such a source at Maragorik is interpreted to be very deeply buried.

The sixth international symposium on mining with fill nearly coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Jubilee Symposium on Mine Filling. That symposium, held in August 1973 in Mount Isa, in part to commemorate the 80th anniversary of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was the first in what has turned out to be a very successful series of symposia. Subsequent symposia were held in Sudbury, Canada (1978), Lulea, Sweden (1983), Montreal, Canada (1989) and Johannesburg, South Africa (1993). The series of symposia has now become an established part of the mining industry calendar, and it will be interesting to see which country is given the honour, and accepts the challenge, to organise the next symposium. When the chairman of the conference organising committee invited (or was it instructed?) me to prepare and deliver one of the keynote addresses, his request was for me to be in parts historical, controversial, predictive and entertaining. The mix was left to me, with one proviso - that an early pioneer of mine filling in Australia be given due recognition. The chairman of the organising committee alone will be able to determine if I fulfilled the last objective. My success, or otherwise, with the other objectives will have to be judged by my fellow delegates. One way of predicting the future, or some small part of it, is to revisit where we have already been with a view to determining the existence of any trends that may impact on the future. An historical review of filling practice and research, with special emphasis on Australian experience in particular and worldwide in general over the previous 25 years, will enable me to address the historical and predictive objectives.

The New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) is a proven concept for the safe and economic construction of underground facilities. This is especially true for tunnelling activity where changing ground conditions are often encountered. However, the principles central to the NATM have gained only limited use within Australia, presumably due to the measurement process inter- fering with tunnel driving and the cost associated with instrumentation and interpre- tation expertise. The design and operating principles of two basic instruments are explained together with laboratory simulated test results and suggest- ions for use in an integrated NATM style approach to underground excavation and construc- tion. The two instruments monitor load in rock reinforcement and deformation in rock or primary and secondary linings. The instruments may be fitted with a miniature display module which outputs the measured parameter in engineering units directly. The design of the sensing components allows the instruments to be installed in various configurations suitable for routine performance monitoring, quality control, support element testing or detailed investigations. The display module which reduces the need for instrumenta- tion expertise should suit contractors and allow performance data to be obtained which quickly may be used to modify support procedures to suit ground conditions. When complemented by convergence measurements the devices enable most facets of the NATM to be implemented.

An alternative process for desorbing and recovering metals from activated carbon has been developed, and is the subject of several patent applications by Micron Research (W.A.) The system uses the principle of conditioning the carbon in a strong alkaline cyanide solution followed by distillation desorption in a fractionating column, using the carbon as the column packing and methanol as the desorbing agent. The system offers the following advantages : (a) The processes of desorption, methanol recovery and reactivation are all carried out in a single column with the carbon itself acting as the column packing. No other desorption plant items or fractional distillation equipment are required. (b) The metal values are concentrated into the water content of the carbon and no other water is used except as condenser coolant. This produces very high grade gold silver solutions which give high current efficiencies in the electrowinning step. These high gold concentrations allow almost complete separation of gold and silver from copper in the electrolytic cell. (c) The process is completed to a tailing assay of less than 200g Au/tonne carbon in 15 - 20 hours allowing turn around of carbon batches on a daily Basis.

Lungfish and crayfish inhabit continental ecosystems similar to those of their ancient counterparts in the Permian (lungfish) and Triassic (crayfish) Periods, exhibiting similar burrowing behaviors to live, breed, and escape desiccation. Identification of their burrows in the geologic record when body fossils are absent has relied on the overall gross morphology of the burrows and the process of elimination. A method of burrow identification has been developed by evaluating burrow structures in an attempt to designate architectural and surficial burrow morphologies that uniquely reflect the distinctive burrowing mechanism of a particular organism. The information from this method defines the burrowing signatures of an organism, enabling the differentiation of their burrows even when fossil evidence is lacking.The lungfish constructed simple, vertical burrows with bulbous terminations. The burrow walls exhibit fine, horizontal to sub-horizontal striae and vertical to sub-vertical striae near the top of the bulbous terminus, reflecting a burrowing style similar to modern burrowing lungfish. The crayfish constructed simple, vertical burrows to complex burrows with multiple branching and chamber development. The burrow surface ornamentations exhibit horizontal to sub-horizontal ridges, vertical to sub-vertical groupings of scratches, mud- and lag-liners, knobby and hummocky textures, and body impressions, which reflect the burrowing mechanism of the crayfish.

Laboratory high tension roll separation and the commercial machines available for this purpose are discussed. The shortcomings of these machines are indicated and a machine that overcomes some of these undesirable character- istics is described. A procedure for evaluating laboratory high tension roll separation is described. The use of this evaluation procedure in conjunction with the laboratory separation is described with examples taken from the Dunwich and Hexham processing plants of Associated Minerals Consolidated Limited. Evidence that laboratory testwork results may be directly transposed to operating plants is given. A discussion of the effects of variables in high tension roll separation of mineral sand concentrates concludes the paper, and uses in support results obtained in the metallurgical laboratories of Associated Minerals Consolidated Limited, Southport, Queensland.

The coal basins that formed near the margin of Permian Australia were comparable in size with the Appalachian coalfields and with the European fields between Wales and Poland. They formed on the foreland side of a growing orogen in a system of linked transform basins formed by transtension on strike-slip faults. They were terminated and compressed when the Gympie volcanic arc was accreted to the orogen. Another huge system of Permian coal basins extending far inland from the Permian coast was also terminated when the Gympie Terrane was Accreted.

In recent years, ultrasonic comminution technology has been developed at the Utah Comminution Center. An ultrasonic grinding device was assembled and investigated. An ultrasonic transducer system has been significantly improved by using a special type of piezoelectric ceramic and preloading to 4.1 x le kPa to obtain maximum strength. The improved system provides constant and rapid vibratory promotion of fatigue fracture resulting in more effective breakage. The design principles for an ultrasonic mill are developed in this paper. Size reduction was successfully achieved in the ultrasonic nip-roll device for a variety of materials. Ultrasonic comminution has repeatedly demonstrated the capability of producing fine particles from a variety of materials. A comparison between ultrasonic grinding and dry ball milling of limestone showed that the ultrasonic device produced much narrower size distributions than the ball mill. This trend is especially obvious in the coarse size range where few particles remain, and in the fine size range where overgrinding is prevented. This behavior might have some interesting applications in areas other than mineral processing like powder metallurgy or material science where narrow and controlled product sizes are required for the successful elaboration of high-technology ceramics and glasses. Ultrasonic comminution has a significant advantage in the accurate control of the product size.

In-seam, directional drilling has been implemented at Huntly West Mine, New Zealand as the most cost effective means of obtaining geological information at a level of detail and accuracy required for planning of longwall ("flexiwall") panels. No geological or geophysical technique tried at the mine prior to 1989 has been able to reduce geological risk to an acceptable level. Surface and in-seam seismic methods have not had adequate resolution. Obtaining the required knowledge via surface drilling would be prohibitively costly, and still not precisely locate or orient faults or the axes of seam "ridges and valleys".A total of 3543 m was drilled at an average of 67m/shift including setting up time. Unplanned delays totalled only 9.6 percent. Major re-interpretation of seam structure resulted from the drilling. Lateral and longitudinal panel grades have been defined. which should be negotiable with the Coalcorp longwall equipment.

Turbulence and its distribution are of great importance in flotation, and have received considerable attention recently. However, there is no mature technique to measure turbulence in three-phase (liquid-solid-gas) industrial flotation cells due to the opaque, highly aggressive and abrasive nature of the slurry involved. Previous research has shown that the piezoelectric vibration sensor (PVS) is a promising tool for turbulence measurement in industrial flotation cells. The PVS is a robust device that converts mechanical vibration to electrical signal, from which turbulence information can be extracted. An improved calibration method has allowed development of a frequency model to calculate the force applied to the sensor. Experimental results and comparison with laser doppler anemometry (LDA) have shown that the PVS can measure fluid kinetic energy, which is related to turbulent kinetic energy, a parameter used in the literature to represent turbulence in flotation. Laboratory measurement in a two-phase (water and air) 60 L cell and with slurry in a 3.5 L cell gave good stable results and mostly consistent trends between the measured turbulence profile and cell operation. When applied in a 300 m3 industrial cell filled with water, the addition of air or slurry to the cell resulted in a shift in the turbulence profile. This is expected because a change in fluid density will change the force applied to the sensor. It is therefore concluded that the piezoelectric sensor is an easy-to-use and robust technique that is fully capable of measuring turbulence in industrial flotation environments.CITATION:Meng, J, Tabosa, E, Xie, W, Runge, K C and Holtham, P, 2014. In line with the recommendations of The AusIMM/AMIC Joint Committee Report in 1981 Isa Mine ore reserves are quoted in proven and probable categories (recoverable ore reserves). Internal reporting considers geological mining and extraction reserves in terms of proven and probable categories. Proven reserves are subdivided into detailed and confirmed ore. External reporting includes a possible ore category (not a reserve). The basis for these divisions is the spatial distribution of sampling data. Proven ore is defined by data 80m apart or less and probable ore by data 80m to 150m apart. Within the proven ore category detailed ore is defined by data 40m apart or less and confirmed ore by data 40m to 80m apart. Kriging is used to provide tonnage and grade information for the currently producing 1100 and 1900 orebodies. Kriged cross sections are initially produced to coincide with existing geological sections and are used for stope design. Stope ore reserves calculations are ideally performed at three discrete design stages, which in order of increasing accuracy are: preliminary design (PD), final design (FD) and ring design (RD). At each of these stages Kriged meshes incorporating the most recent sampling information are produced for reserve calculations. Historically derived mining and extraction factors are applied both to global reserves and individual stope reserves to reflect changes in geological and mining conditions as well as the sequencing of extraction. These factorised reserves are then inserted into the computerised reserves inventory system (RIN). Monitoring of individual stope performance continues into the production stage with input from planning, research, survey and production personnel. This allows actual extraction factors to be derived for comparison with predicted factors, providing some measure of stope performance.

The Wild Dog gold-silver-copper deposit represents a new ore-deposit type in Papua New Guinea. The telluride vein mineralisation is associated with a Tertiary caldera and has similarities with that from the Baguio district, Philippines, Vatakoula, Fiji, and the San Juan Mountains, southwestern Colorado. The deposit, discovered in July 1983, has negligible stream silt and concentrate anomaly, and a float-train limited to within 300m of the prospect. The comparatively recent exposure of the vein system may explain the limited stream expression of the deposit. At least three major veins occur in the deposit; the vein system strikes north- northeasterly, dips 78¦W, and has a maximum strike length of 1350m. Veins are enveloped by a wallrock dominated by an assemblage of quartz-illite-pyrite. Four types of silicification related to multiple vein filling events have been defined on the basis of field relationships, drill-core intersections, petrology and fluid inclusion study. To December 1986 a total of 22 diamond drill holes (2304m) and 40 reverse circulation drill holes (1833m) have been completed on the deposit, defining a 750m zone of interest. The upper 30m of the deposit is oxidised. Much of the high-grade mineralisation in both the sulphide and oxide portions of the deposit is restricted to ore- shoots which strike parallel to the overall vein structure and are vertical to steeply westward dipping. They are defined geochemically by the lg/t Au cutoff and geologically by the relative increase in the vein density of auriferous grey-black sulphidic silica, the final vein filling event. Metallurgical studies and the results of close-spaced drilling have demonstrated the very good repeatibility on duplicate assays, and the extremes of grade variability of mineralisation over very short distances. The good assay agreement on duplicate samples .s indicative of fine, dispersed gold.
