Mineral deposits in New Zealand whose origin can be ascribed to primary magmatic segregations are associated with mafic-ultra- mafic complexes related to two orogenic episodes which took place during Paleozoic and Mesozoic times. These mafic-ultramafic complexes are essentially of two types. One is ophiolitic and has podiform chromite mineralisation presumably formed below a spreading ridge. The other type occurs as intraplate layered intrusions in which Fe-Cu-Ni sulphides and Fe- Ti-V oxides have formed as a result of liquid immiscibility with the host magma, and have subsequently accumulated by gravity means. Generalised descriptions are given for some deposits in NW Nelson, Fiordland and Marlborough districts.

Mining is recognised as being one of the most dangerous industries in the world due to the difficult working conditions. Working in such hazardous circumstances in an underground mine often results in a variety of accidents. The working conditions at Kazakhstan’s underground mines have deteriorated owing to a lack of a risk-reduction plan and methodology. This paper evaluates different underground mines in Kazakhstan and demonstrates the employed mining method and the observed failure modes. Risk assessment has long been recognised as a valuable technique for preventing accidents. In the underground mining sector, risk assessment tools play an important role in avoiding work-related accidents. However, geotechnical uncertainty is a significant source of severe incidents like stress-induced roof collapse, wedge failure, seismicity etc, which result in human and financial losses. A geotechnical risk assessment performed early in the mine design process might assist justify a different mine design component, such as different support systems for a dangerous location within the mine openings during mining. The goal of this research is to create a damage/failure database aiming at the development of a geomechanical risk assessment methodology. This work identifies a thematic structure linked to risk assessment and management for the examined Kazakhstan mining sector. As part of the developed database, the dominant modes of failure within the Kazakhstan underground mining conditions were investigated. The study will provide opportunities to establish future research objectives for Kazakhstan’s mining industry where there are significant gaps between state-of-the-art research and mining operations in practice.

Despite the recognised importance of tailings management, there remain little data on the potential benefits of biological treatments compared with physical and chemical treatments. The operation of the majority of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) continues to employ mainly physical solutions, such as sub-aerial tailings slurry deposition, with increasing adoption of thickening, paste and filtration to dewater the tailings involving the addition of chemicals such as flocculants and coagulants. However, with tailings production continuing to escalate rapidly due to the increasing demand for commodities and reducing ore grades, available technologies have not demonstrated cost-effective performance at high tailings production rates. This paper examines the emerging role of bacteria to better manage tailings, reducing risks and optimising storage capacity. Bacteria have the potential to enhance tailings dewatering, maintain their permeability, delay the onset of desiccation cracking, and improve their shear strength. Bacteria-treated tailings may be suitable for use as construction materials. Bacteria also have potential in limiting the dusting of tailings and facilitating rehabilitation on closure. The paper describes a series of laboratory involving the addition of harmless bacteria to a range of tailings. The bacteria form a compact material called calcite (a common and stable form of calcium carbonate), which immobilises the tailings particles, releases water, and cements the tailings in a stable and natural matrix. The water released can be recovered or evaporated, depending on site objectives. The bacterial reactions are linked to physical and chemical processes, providing the potential for an optimal mix of technologies for particular tailings and site conditions.CITATION:Cifuentes, H and Williams, D J, 2018. Mercury is introduced into EZ's electroly tic zinc/sulphuric acid plant complex at Risdon, Tasmania, in zinc sulphide concentrate. Mercury is volatilised during the roasting operation and then distributed in the sulphuric acid plant effluents and product acid. Following an investigation of the factors determining the mercury distribution, a plan was formulated to-provide an environmentally accep- table degree of mercury containment at Risdon. This paper discusses details of the various control measures investigated and out- lines the reasons for selecting the particular procedures finally adopted for the Risdon plant.

The commercial production of copper metal involves a sequence of purification stages. One step of this process eliminates bulk quantities of iron and sulphur from matte Cu2S(FeS to produce blister containing 95.5 per cent copper. This task is traditionally performed in the Pierce-Smith converter, a cylindrical vessel in widespread use throughout the copper industry. Typically, multiple Pierce-Smith converters are arranged along an aisle, simplifying material transfer from vessel to vessel. Materials are moved through the aisle in pots and boats, using overhead cranes. In terms of the overall process, the converter aisle represents a critical processing unitùit contributes significantly to the value added nature of the metal. The aisle is subject to significant process disturbances. Thus, improvements in the operationÆs modes and conditions have a direct impact on process profitability. As with any commercial operation, improvements are always sought to increase process performance. The general approach involves process modelling, followed by an application of control and optimisation theory to this model. The results of such a study are then applied to the real process, leading to improved performance.

The United States has more than 45 billion tons of economic coal reserves in seams above 10 feet thick and current underground production from thick seams represent less than three per cent of the total production. A tripling of underground production from thick seams is necessary within the next 10 years to meet U.S. coal production demands. An analysis of underground accident and production data is presented in the paper. A study of accident and injury distribution in different coal seam heights in the eastern and western part of the United States in seams ranging in thicknesses from 5 to 15 feet indicates that the seam thicknesses do not produce adverse impact on underground injury incidence. Accidents associated with roof falls and haulage account for about 70 per cent of underground mining injuries.

A method of raising has been developed at Cobar Mines Pty Ltd's CSA Mine which has achieved advance of up to 6 m in a single blast and raises are now developed which have averaged 4.2 m per blast. The method is a form of Long Hole Raising and is applicable to short raises of less than 50 m length. Blast holes are column charged and initiated sequentially with short delay detonators (millisecond). The equipment used to drill the raising blast holes consists of normal production drilling rigs and accessories and no other special equipment is required. The method has significant advantages in rates of performance and fits neatly into production drilling and blasting schedules. The method is also far safer than any non-mechanical or conventional means of Raising.

Many types of micro-organisms inhabit iron ore deposits contributing to biogenic formation and conversion of iron oxides and associated minerals. Bacteria such as Paenibacillus polymyxa are capable of significantly altering the surface chemical behaviour of iron ore minerals such as haematite, alumina, calcite and silica. Differing mineral surface affinities of bacterial cells and metabolic products such as proteins and polysaccharides can be utilised to induce their flotation or flocculation. Mineral-specific bioreagents such as proteins are generated when bacteria are grown in the presence of haematite, alumina, calcite and silica. Alumina-grown bacterial cells and proteins separated from such cells were found to be capable of separating alumina from haematite. Biodegradation of iron ore flotation collectors such as amines and oleates can be effectively utilised to achieve environmental control in iron ore processing mills.

LITHOPROBE is a national, collaborative research grogram with the general objective of understanding the teotectonic evolution of the North American continent through multidisciplinary lithospheric studies in carefully selected areas of Canada. Six transect areas are investigating Precambrian evolution, although only in two of these is the research well evolved. The Archean Kapuskasing Structural Zone in Ontario is confirmed as an upthrust slice of upper to mid crust exposed at the surface. The Late Proterozoic Keweenawan mid-continent rift is shown to be the deepest known rift on Earth and the Grenville collisional zone of Ontario and Quebec involves crustal scale imbrication and ramping of deeply buried rocks to the surface. Two transect areas are investigating Phanerozoic evolution. In the Newfoundland Appalachians the geologically defined tectonostratigraphic domains do not coincide with lower crustal blocks defined by seismic reflection data. The Southern Cordillera Transect in western Canada is examining the nature, timing and dynamics of the assembly of the Cordillera, and particularly the role of accreted terranes. Work in the eastern and central segments has extended the known western limit of the North American craton at least IOO km westward and crustal-scale ramps associated with metamorphic core complexes have been identified.

ABSTRACT- I Results are given for a series of tests in which a 300 mm pilot-scale Jameson cell has been used in copper recleaner flotation, and for the flotation of a lead rougher feed. the results indicate that the production rate of solids, at the same superficial air velocity Jg, is higher than in conventional columns. Thus in the copper recleaner application, the pulling rate reached 14 gm/cm2/min compared with between two and three for an operating column, while in the lead cleaner application the comparable figures were 12 - 14 gm/cm2/min for the Jameson cell vs 8 - 9 gm/cm2/min for a test column. A froth crowder was used to increase the air superficial velocity Jg in the Jameson cell in the copper recleaner, while holding the collection mechanism and pulp feed rates constant. The recovery increased from 50 per cent to over 90 per cent, suggesting that recovery is controlled mainly by the froth conditions, rather than the particle-bubble interactions in the Downcomer.

Recovery of tin and copper from concen trates containing cassiterite, stannite and chalcopyrite was studied in laboratory-scale tests designed to simulate continuous operation of the matte fuming process in which tin is recovered as SnS fume while copper accumulates in the matte. Charges made up of 300g of mixtures of the concentrate and siliceous flux were added at a uniform rate in pelletized form to crucibles containing 300g of matte and 50g of slag (both of which were recovered from previous tests), while blowing through the matte with air or oxygen-nitrogen mixtures at a rate of 3 to 5 1/min. Accurate material balances enabled the effects of process operating conditions on tin recovery and sulfur utilization to be deter- mined. When operated correctly, the matte fuming process gave tin recoveries exceeding 90 percent in spite of wide variations in the copper content of the matte and in the operat- ing conditions. Deterioration of tin recovery was associated with undersaturation of the slag with respect to silica, and with high partial pressure of sulfur dioxide (greater than approx- imately 0.2) brought about by oxygen enrichment of the blowing air. The utilization of sulfur varied widely in low grade mattes. Copper in excess of approx- imately 10% promoted formation of SO2 by the commonly accepted reaction: FeS + 1-120 2= FeO + S02 while in copper-free and lower grade mattes a substantial fraction of the oxygen was consumed in the alternative reaction FeS + i 02 = FeO + z S2.

The provision of a water supply is a major consideration in planning mining developments particularly in remote areas. The evaluation and development of adequate water supplies in and areas of Australia is often as important as the discovery of the orebody. The copper orebody at Warrego near Tennant Creek could not be mined economically if cheap treatment water was not available near the mine. This paper describes the difficulties in obtaining water in the Tennant Creek area and the water supply investigations carried out near the Warrego Mine which resulted in the successful discovery and evaluation of a reliable large scale water supply. It is contended that the establishment of a water supply must be approached on a systematic and scientific basis similar to the approach with the exploration and establishment of actual ore reserves. Mining companies with similar water supply problems may benefit by approaching their problem on this basis. The approach adopted by Peko Mines is outlined in this report.

Global demand for iron and steel has increased substantially over the past 20 years and there has been a greater focus on developing suitable processing options to treat low-grade hematite-goethite ores containing higher levels of silica and alumina impurities. The processing applicable to reduce the impurity levels in these lower-grade iron ores depends on their mineralogy and a thorough understanding of the process dynamics associated with the separation technology. Different separation technologies used to remove silica and alumina from low-grade iron ores were reviewed. The major concentration methods that may be applied to upgrade lower-grade lump iron ores include magnetic separation, wet and dry heavy media separation, and air-pulsed jigging. The technologies applicable to beneficiating iron ore fines include wet and dry gravity and magnetic separation, flotation, and roasting followed by magnetic separation. It is necessary to investigate the application of separation technologies on a case-by-case basis to select economically viable beneficiation strategies suitable for the particular low-grade iron ore. A commercial flow sheet is expected to involve the implementation of several separation technologies.

Classification devices provide a link between comminution and flotation. Basically, it determines which particles are diverted back for additional grinding and which ones pass to downstream flotation. Therefore, the classifiers play an important role in the performance of a mineral processing circuit. Hydrocyclones are the most common classifiers used in wet grinding, despite being associated with poor classification efficiency. Hydrocyclones are widely used due to advantages related to low maintenance as well as reduced capital and operating cost. Other classifiers, such as fine screens, have much better classification efficiency compared to hydrocyclones. The major challenge of using screens in an operation, however, is their large footprint and increased maintenance requirements relative to hydrocyclones. Some researchers have demonstrated that switching from hydrocyclones to screens, as the classifier device in a ball milling circuit, resulted in a 20 per cent increase in plant throughput and significant improvements in coarse particle recovery, resulting in a 6 per cent increase in overall flotation recovery. However, it is known that these benefits of improved classification are very much ore specific, ie depending on the ore response. Therefore, there is a need to estimate the benefits of improved classification in pilot scale testing before the plant could consider the potential classifier upgrade. This paper presents the results of two pilot-scale grinding tests where the ore sample was processed using different classifiers: a traditional hydrocyclone and hybrid classification involving the use of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone followed by a screen. The size specific energy and circulating load were used to compare the performance of the grinding circuit. The grinding product was subject to mineral liberation analysis and the impact of classification efficiency on the mineral liberation is discussed in the paper.

In recent years the column flotation process has gained worldwide acceptance for processing various types of minerals under different circuit configurations. In an age when real prices of many mineral commodities are in decline and mining and labour costs are rising in real terms, it is more important than ever that concentration processes be not only efficient but also cost-effective. The column flotation process can give better metallurgical performance as well as involve lower capital and operating costs compared to conventional mechanical cells.This paper reviews the literature on columns and the effects of various column parameters on performance of the column flotation process. The history and principles of operation of the column flotation process are briefly discussed by way of introduction.

The completion of the Hot Strip Mill at the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Ltd., makes possible the production of steel plates and wide strip of a quality and in quantities not possible previously in Australia, and will also enable the production of tinplate to be undertaken in this country.The site chosen for the mill was a mud fiat underlain by a hard stone bottom at 5, to 801 feet below the surface; and a total area of one hundred acres was reclaimed to a level of 20 feet above the original surface.Three adjoining buildings were constructed to house the slab receiving yard, mill equipment and electric drive, together with the plate finishing line.After slabs have been heated to 2250°F at a rate of 90 tons per hour, they are transferred to the vertical scale breaker which is the first stand in the hot roughing mill. Here the primary furnace scale is first cracked and then blasted off by high velocity water descaling sprays.The next stand is the horizontal scale l;Jreaker, where any remaining primary scale is broken and then blasted off. After descaling, the slabs pass to the broadside mill, where short slabs are turned and rolled on broad side for wide plate.The next step is a slab squeezer which squares up the edges after broadsiding ready for the reversing mill. This is the finishing stand for plate and the last roughing stand for strip, which then passes to the finishing mill.The hot strip finishing mill consists of six stands with a maximum finishing speed of 2,230 feet per minute. The Golden Cross Mine is located within the Waitekauri Valley near the southern end of the Coromandel Ranges, eight kilometres north-west of Waihi, North Island, New Zealand. The mine is owned and operated in a joint venture by Coeur Gold NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Ltd (20 per cent). The underground mine produces gold and silver from low sulphidation epithermal quartz veins which developed in the shallow parts of a meteoric water dominated system during the Upper Miocene (7.36 - 6.67 Ma). The Empire Vein System is hosted within a dilational structural environment which developed at the lithological contact between acid intrusives, rhyolitic-dacitic tuffs and reworked pyroclastics, and undifferentiated andesites. The formation of the Empire Vein System was controlled by the rheological properties of the host rocks and variable displacement along a series of normal, right lateral, easterly-dipping faults. These faults represent sub-parallel zones of master shearing within a Riedel shear model. Underground mining extracts ore from the steeply dipping hangingwall and the complex footwall veins of the Empire Vein System. Initially sills are driven along the hangingwall vein on ten to fifteen metre sublevel intervals. In the footwall zones where significant mineralisation adjacent to the hangingwall sill drives has been identified, a series of cross-cuts and footwall drives (sub-parallel to the hangingwall sill) are also developed. Where continuity of mineralisation and ground conditions permit a combination of post pillar flatbacking and AVOCA longhole benching methods are used. Detailed underground mapping of lithology, quartz veining and major structures provides the information for designing ground support and footwall pillars, planning mine development and ore extraction sequencing. Sectional interpretation displays the vertical extent of faults, fractures and the vein system. The mining methods used underground at the mine have evolved through a thorough understanding of the structural complexity and the systematic geological mapping of the Empire Vein System.
