Commencing early in 1975, Saraji Mine in Central Queensland will product 3.56 million tonnes in the first year and then 4.57 million tonnes annually for the Japanese and European markets. The coal will be mined from a series of pits separated by corridors which will be mined at a later date. Through the corridors flow regional drainage structures and power lines. Relatively easy areas will be mined initially to assist the cash flow and to minimise start-up difficulties. For ease of scheduling it is desirable that pit lengths exceed 3 000m but this will not always be possible. Ramps were designed using 1 200m spacing and 5 per cent gradient as optimum but modified to suit specific conditions. One ramp will be in the end of each pit nearest the ROM hopper and stripping will commence from this end. The advantages so gained are shorter haul distances, immediate access to the coal after stripping and simplification of the excavation of the first ramp. Haul road location was defined by the minimum present value of construction plus operating costs. The mining industry is facing some key challenges that provide a compelling case for geometallurgy initiatives. Over the last 30 years, the average grade of Australian orebodies being mined has halved while the waste removed to access the minerals has more than doubled. In the last eight years, the industry’s energy consumption has increased 70 per cent while multi-factored productivity has fallen 24 per cent. The paper documents a broad range of industry case studies which demonstrate strategies for gaining value from geometallurgy.The mining industry constantly faces the key questions of how significant ore variability is on mine valuation and how would knowledge of the variability change the mining schedule, mine to mill design and operation. Using case studies the paper describes the methods used for incorporating mineral extraction attributes into orebody models and their technical integration into daily operation as well as mine planning optimisation. While pit optimisation from a fully attributed geometallurgical model highlights areas of opportunity and risk it is shown that during the scheduling phase of mine planning that significant value can be added. The benefits from these projects included reducing geotechnical and environmental risk, improving mine to mill performance, option analysis and quantified cash flow risk. There is growing acceptance within the minerals industry that ‘realistically assumed modifying factors’ defined by a competent person/s are not sufficient to mitigate the risk of funding mining ventures. Geometallurgy is moving away from factored ore reserves to data-rich block models providing reliable information for mining, metallurgical and environmental considerations.

Valuation of mining companies and their underlying assets prepared by brokers' analysts are, by necessity, approximations. The reliability of the valuations is entirely proportional to the quality of available data, the reliability of forecasts and the nature of underlying commodity price assumptions. The latter is perhaps the greatest single cause of gross variations in company and asset earnings estimates and- valuations. Assumptions are often necessary regarding commodity price achievement based on commodity hedge positions. Public disclosure from listed companies provides a sound base from which to project earnings, cashflows and balance sheets. The uncommon disclosure of projected production and cost schedules often reduces the reliability of future estimates. The application of reserve and resource estimates is contentious with practitioners applying differing weightings to importance of resources in estimating mine lives (and therefore cashflow streams). Valuation methods applied in equity markets usually focus on relative value and the identification of pricing anomalies. The commonest ""rules of thumb"" applied in the valuation of mining companies (and therefore their underlying assets) is with the use of year specific price/earnings (P/E) and price/cashflow (P/CF) ratios, with low multiples suggesting undervalued assets, high multiples overvalued situations (but these rules can often be clouded by market expectations of underlying commodity price movements). Another simply applied valuation tool is to examine the examine the value placed on reserves and resources by the market. Inexpensive gold in the ground (expressed as $ of market capitalisation per ounce of reserves or resources) might indicate a buying opportunity, but the market does discount the value of gold in the ground prior to mine development and where development risk is perceived.

This paper highlights two aspects of the mineral sands industry in Australia: the development of the industry from approximately 1870 through to 1980, and the author’s experience in the industry from 1966 to date.The first real heavy mineral (HM) mining in Australia started in 1870 with the mining of heavy mineral slicks on the beaches along the east coast of Australia. The real potential of Australian heavy minerals was however only realised in the 1920s with the first production of a heavy mineral concentrate that was shipped to Canada for processing. Post WW 11 and the Korean War, Australia was the largest producer of mineral sands products in the world as well as a significant developer of associated separation equipment and technology. The number of producing companies in the east coast peaked at 33 in 1957, was reduced to ten by 1965, and subsequently further reduced to five in 1980 as a result of potential mining areas being declared National Parks or Conservation Reserves. Today there is one company, Unimin Australia Pty Ltd (formally Consolidated Rutile Ltd) operating on the east coast. In contrast there were three companies on the west coast in 1965, four companies in 1980, and four companies today (albeit not the same companies).There have been considerable ups and downs for the industry in Australia, however world wide it was renowned in the past as being an industry that attracted numerous interesting and innovative characters that played a major role in developing it into the vibrant industry that it is today. This, given the current climate, is predicted to continue into the future.The author has been continuously involved in the industry for over 45 years from 1966, initially as an electrician at Consolidated Rutile Ltd culminating in the role of General Manager/President of Iluka Resources Limited USA, prior to his retirement in 2009. His exposure has been world wide and has covered all aspects of the industry but in the main focused on project development and operational areas. During this time there have been significant technological advances, yet to some extent the basic principles have not changed at all. Some of the most noteworthy advances include the development of the Wright Spiral in 1977, the development of the Reading High Intensity Wet Magnet (WHIMS), the rare earth magnets, the CRL floating thickener and the improvement of analytical techniques. From a safety, health and environmental perspective there has been significant advances that the industry has much to be proud of. These include wetland restoration both in Australia and in the US, the restoration of farmland in Virginia and Capel, and the re-establishment of native species, for example at Eneabba and Richards Bay to name but a few.

The Cawse nickel-cobalt operation is situated 50 km NW of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, at latitude30o22'30'' south and longitude 121o08'30'' east on the Kalgoorlie 1:250 000 geological map sheet (SH 51-9) (see Figure 1). The project is owned and operated by Centaur Nickel Pty Ltd (CTR) and was the first in Australia to commercially produce nickel metal and cobalt sulphide through pressure acid leach (PAL) technology. Cawse has a total resource base (all categories of resources + reserves) of 213 million tonnes Mt at 0.7 per cent Ni and 0.04 per cent Co, comprising 127 Mt at Cawse Central which is 100 per cent owned by CTR and 86 Mt at Cawse Extended where CTR has a 80 per cent equity. Cawse Extended is located immediately to the northwest of the Cawse Central leases. All current reserves (proved and probable) of 30 Mt at 1.0 per cent nickel are contained within Cawse Central. In addition the Siberia project area 20 kilometres to the NW has a resource of 63 Mt at 0.7 per cent Ni. Cawse is a dry laterite deposit, with nickel and cobalt hosted by iron and manganese oxides. Cawse Central mineralisation extends over a ten kilometre strike length, with three pits currently being mined. The Bunyip pit has the premier nickel and cobalt grades within Cawse Central. There are seven dominant lithology types forming mappable units within current pit exposures. Four of these units are host to nickel and cobalt mineralisation. Ore types are defined as Upgrade, Grind and Non-upgrade, depending on their physical characteristics with respect to the treatment route. Mining commenced in February 1998. To the end of calender 1999 the operation has produced 2100 tonnes nickel plate and 470 tonnes of cobalt as a cobalt sulphide product. Future production will target 9000 tonnes per annum Ni metal and up to 2000 tonnes per annum Co, based on processing 500 000 tonnes of ore per annum.

New Celebration Gold Mine is located 35 km SE of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, in the Archaean Kalgoorlie-St Ives Greenstone belt. The leases total 119 sq kms and arepart of a joint venture between Newmont Australia Ltd (as manager) and Mt Martin Gold Mines N.L. Mining commenced in August, 1986 and is now producing over 115,000 ounces of gold per annum. A variety of gold mineralisation styles with a total resource of 23.5 million tonnes at 2.19g/t are associated with shear zones at New Celebration. Gold production is co-ordinated from 7 open pits with others planned to com- mence soon. A large scale underground trial mining operation has com- menced with a decline on the hanging wall of the main producing orebody, Hampton Boulder. Millfeed produced is classified on the stockpile according to grade and metallurgical performance and blended tomaximise throughput while main- taining grade through a CIL treatment plant currently operating at 1.7 million tonnes per year.

In this paper, three types of value-adding in the minerals industry are discussed: downstream processing, improving the efficiency of existing processing and increasing the knowledge base and expertise of the staff. It is shown that, while downstream processing seems to offer a good way of improving Australia's trade position, there are a number of impediments to such development, notably, limited access to the appropriate technology and overseas markets. Transport costs can also be a problem. To reverse the situation will require more positive policies by government. In the meantime, something can be done towards adding value by increasing the efficiency of existing processes. Examples are given, showing how it might be possible to make economies in reagent costs in the gold industry, how innovative technology has led to more complete processing of a tailings dump, how research might lead to an increase in the throughput in the production of synthetic rutile and how it is possible to leach selectively from gold/copper ores.

There is an increasing need for reliable and comparable coal resource data and it is necessary to standardize the traditional classification procedures by quantifying the three basic evaluation criteria of economic feasibility, geologic assurance and recovery. For well documented deposits, geostatistical methods can consider- ably improve classification quality. A geostatistically based algorithm for classifying coal resources within the current Queensland and New South Wales codes has been developed. Application of the method in classifying resources from a number of seams exhibiting different structural characteristics is assessed. The method is found to give classification results which closely reflect the error associated with an estimate of resource quantities based on current sampling densi- ties. It requires a careful geostatistical analysis with emphasis on geological awareness. Resource category restrictions must be arbi- trarily assigned and remain constant for all deposits being compared. Engineering judgement is needed and interpretation may be required with isolated and peripheral blocks.

The humble gabion basket is to mine development what the light bulb and safety pin are to eir-ryday life. Gabions provide a flexible, easy to assemble and cost efficient solution for "101" mine and civil engineering development applications.In some instances gabion baskets are still efficiently in use after many years of faithful, maintenance-free service. In other situations, the baskets have been demolished or made redundant within days, either having served their temporary usefulness or negligently destroyed by the operator of heavy equipment. Either way, the gabion basket must surely rate among the top 10 cost efficient engineering construction materials.

An extensive experimental campaign was developed in a continuous 6 x 2' (D x L) pilot scale SAG mill. The effect of the feed flow rate, feed solids concentration, ball filling fraction and feed size distribution, over the mill performance was investigated. The residence time distribution (RTD) for the fine material was measured in every test, in order to detect changes in the mixing characteristics of the mill under different operating conditions. Based on phenomenological considerations a state model of the SAG mill was developed, which independently incorporates mechanisms such as: grinding, mass transport and classification in the grate discharge. These can be parametrised using information and optimisation software. This comminution model extends the compensation condition, which is a conventional hypothesis for ball milling, to the semi-autogenous mill grinding. The mathematical analysis of this hypothesis, applied to SAG mills, allow the reduction of the number of parameters in the model, using the relationship Ki = (1-bii)Si, where b and S have the conventional meaning. Therefore, the distribution fracture matrix bij and the specific fracture rate SIE are grouped in just a single diagonal matrix Ki.

Production scheduling optimisation in open pit gold mining is a complex problem as it is driven by economic criteria reflecting particular economic interests of the concerned parties in the mining business. The contemporary organisational forms of mining, such as owner-operator and contract mining, are a good example of this relationship. These forms are complex and contradictory by nature as the contractor aims to get more waste at the beginning of mine exploitation in order to make more profit with favourable discounting effect over time, while the owner-operator aims to mine less waste at the beginning, which is a precondition for implementation of the mine planning principle of waste deferment and maximising the net present value (NPV) by accounting for the time value of money. Both forms are vital for the successful performance of the Australian mining industry as their competition is a powerful driving force of the market-oriented national economy.The present paper offers a new vision about the economic effectiveness of contract and owner-operator forms in surface gold mining through the prism of a novel production scheduling approach with a multistage stabilisation of the mining rate that implements the mine-to-market concept of modelling. The comparison of the forms is demonstrated with a case study that reveals the specific features of the new scheduling approach and the benefits of its implementation in the exploitation of Australian gold resources.CITATION:Halatchev, R, 2013. Zinc sulphide concentrate from Mount lsa, Australia, was leached in acidic sulphate-chloride solutions using ferric ions as oxidants under atmospheric pressure. The parameters of temperature, particle size and concentrations of ferric and chloride ions were evaluated.The shrinking core model can be used to describe the leaching which is limited by the electrochemical processes in the initial leaching stage, and by both surface reaction and pore diffusion processes subsequently. The apparent activation energy measured in the initial leaching stage is 49 kJ/mole over the temperature range 60 to 90°C.About 99 per cent of the contained zinc in the -45+38 µm particle sample dissolved at 90°C in a 0.5 M H2SO4/0.1 M Fe2(SO4)3/0.8 M NaCI solution within two hours. Some nine per cent of sulphide sulphur was oxidised through to sulphate; the remainder was convened to elemental sulphur.The mixed sulphate-chloride system has advantages over separate chloride and sulphate systems due to the low reagent cost, high leaching rate and possible selective leaching of zinc sulphide concentrate with high lead contents.

The presence of coal in the Sydney area was confirmed in 1891 when Cremorne Bore No. I intersected cindered coal at 1 854 m. The decision to develop Sydney Harbour Colliery was based on the results of Cremorne Bore No. 2 (drilled in 1892) in which a 3.12 m. seam of unaltered coal was encountered at 889 m. Geologists from the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources consider that this seam is probably equivalent to an upper split of the Bulli seam. Long Cove at Balmain was selected by Sydney Harbour Collieries Ltd. as the site for mine development in 1896. This was due to opposition to the proposed establishment of a colliery on the north shore of Port Jackson near Cremorne. Construction of the main access and ventilation shafts (termed Birth- day and Jubilee), other mine infrastructure and the quay wall occurred between 1897 and 1902. A fatal accident in which five men were killed occurred during the construction of the Birthday Shaft in 1900. This acci- dent resulted in amendments to the Mining Act providing for guide rails in shafts.

The planned extraction of deeper copper ore at Isa Mine has necessitated a review of existing equipment and methods to contain costs and improve working conditions. Mining is in progress for a crushing-conveying system to serve the deeper southern areas of the 1100 Orebody. This system will permit direct tipping of ore to the crushers and conveying of the crushed ore by cable belt conveyor to existing shaft loading facilities, a distance of about 2 km. To develop part of the conveyor drive a new machine will be used, the Robbins MM120 Mobile Miner, a joint development project between The Robbins Company and Mount Isa Mines Limited. The Mobile Miner uses a rotating cutting wheel to excavate headings 3.7 m high and from 4.7 m to 7.5 m wide. To ventilate the deep crusher complexes and associated development at high virgin rock temperatures, a refrigeration plant will be built on surface to reticulate chilled water underground. Bulk cooling of air to the 3000/3500 Orebodies and the southern crushers will be combined with the reticulation of chilled service water to the lower workings of the mine.

The Mt Whaleback open cut mine South Wall is, in part, developed as an unbenched dip slope. The remainder of the rock slope consists of asymetrical overturned folds which have been locally truncated by major low angle faults. The Mt Whaleback orebody is structurally controlled and therefore extensive structural geology input has gone into the final rock slope design. The design is based on normalised 40 m geological cross sections, but the inherent complexity of the geological structure of the orebody yields a high degree of uncertainty within that interval. There- fore, the final slope bench face and the penultimate bench faces are mapped in detail to accurately establish the geological contacts and struc- ture. The knowledge of accurate geology of final and penultimate faces plays a very important role in the design of controlled perimeter blast- ing. Accurate geology is established mainly by face mapping, and by hole geological evaluation of blastholes to locally refine the current Geologi- cal model.

Eloise Copper Mine is situated 56 km east-southeast of Cloncurry, Queensland, Australia. The deposit was discovered by BHP Minerals in 1986 during follow up diamond drilling of EM anomalies associated with major aeromagnetic anomalies. The deposit is overlain by 60 m of Mesozoic cover. Amalg Resources NL commenced mining during 1995 by means of decline access and long hole-stoping. The total mineral resource comprised 1.77 million tonnes at 4.10 per cent Cu as at the end of June 2003. Proved and probable reserves are 930 000 tonnes at 3.97 per cent Cu. Mineralisation is hosted within a strongly foliated Proterozoic meta-sedimentary sequence comprising arenites and schists. The metasediment sequence also contains a coarse-grained amphibolite body possibly representing an early intrusion of gabbroic composition. Economic mineralisation characteristically occurs as a number of steeply plunging lenticular bodies with strike lengths of between 100 and 200 m and maximum widths approaching 25 m. The principal orebody, the Levuka (B) Lode, displays a down plunge extension exceeding 1000 m and is open at depth. Ore mineralogy is almost exclusively chalcopyrite with the principal gangue phases consisting of pyrrhotite + quartz + carbonate. A biotite + hornblende + magnetite assemblage represents locally intense mafic alteration of the metasedimentary host sequence. Magnetite is present in variable amounts and may be locally significant in some of the smaller satellite orebodies. Within the orebodies the sulfides display a range of textures from massive through to vein like. Sulfides commonly display brecciated textures at a range of scales. Post-mineralisation faulting has severely dislocated the orebodies, resulting in a complex arrangement of fault bounded ore blocks. These faults display considerable variability in regard to strike, dip and amount and direction of throw. A recent review of the fault system by means of large-scale structure underground mapping, re-interpretation of drill core and 3D modelling has led to a significant improvement in the understanding of these structures. A significant upgrade of the geological database has accompanied the structural review. The overall improved understanding has aided the mine design processes with particular regard to decline and access development and pillar location. This has also impacted on the design of drilling programs and exploration for additional satellite ore zones.

The value of Australia's education services exports increased to over $15 billion dollars in 2009, placing education as the third overall export earner behind coal and iron ore; however there are concerns over the impact of emerging policies on the future of both the industry and the provision of mining education. Policies have impacts on the growing number of international rankings (or league tables) of mining jurisdictions and universities. A high position in such rankings might be used as a measure of perceived quality with benefit to those at the top and to the detriment to those lower down.    Top performing companies in the relatively new domain of sustainability have been shown to achieve better financial performance than their industry competitors, assisting them in attracting top quality committed staff, hence positioning themselves well for the future. The world's mining companies, jurisdictions and universities are now ranked with results in the public domain. It is argued as to the validity of the data or perceptions used in such rankings, but there is no doubt they are influential in determining the flow of dollars around the globe. By investing your pension fund assets in the shares of the top performing companies, by placing your exploration dollars in a country at the top of such a list of attractive jurisdictions, attending or recruiting from a University at the top of the rankings - risk must surely be reduced?   While savings and risk reduction can undoubtedly result from the introduction of new technologies developed through appropriate R&D (the other core activity of a university), the maintenance of a very high level of exploration and production performance through dedicated highly skilled staff every hour of every day quietly improves financial performance, while avoiding safety, environmental and/or community incidents (ie protects the 'triple bottom line'). As always risk reduction comes down to enabling quality people to do a quality job - through the actions of such people we can sustain the global mining industry and secure our social license to operate. However, there is global concern over where the numbers of such people, including those with the recently required skills in sustainability, are going to come from.   This presentation will discuss some of the complexity and interactions involved in the development of such rankings, the dangers inherent in their simple acceptance and use, plus indicate some of the directions mining educators might take to sustain and increase the supply of quality graduates to the global mining industry. Gold mining companies who are signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (visit www.cyanidecode.org for further information) are required to measure WAD cyanide on-line and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of specified limits. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5 such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Recognising and in response to the gold mining industryÆs need for an on-line WAD cyanide measurement device, Mintek recently developed the WAD Cynoprobe. The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide from metal-cyano complexes. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand <-> Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The instrument proved to be accurate and reliable in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. It has gained wide-spread commercial acceptance both locally and internationally. However, itÆs recent exposure to complex ore types have called for refinements to the analysis technique. It has been further developed to improve its precision and accuracy and to remove reagent and thiosulfate interferences. Its compatibility with the most commonly used destruction oxidants has also recently been investigated. The WAD Cynoprobe may be configured to measure both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately 5 min, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. Proper oxidant dosage control and monitoring of effluent concentration levels will ultimately result in less cyanide and post-destruction salts discharged into the environment.

The Southern 'B' lode orebody at the New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) mine, Broken Hill, is a continuation of the zinc-rich orebody that was first mined in NBHC in the 1940's. Preliminary diamond drilling in the early 1960's resulted in sufficient information to delineate the southern extension of the presently mined 'B' lode orebody, In 1966 the sinking of a 7.3 metre diameter circular shaft (No. 3 Airway) was commenced to improve the ventilation of the southern extremities of existing workings and to provide a base to further explore and develop the orebody extension. Development on four levels was started in the early 1970'.s to link the existing workings with the new shaft. Three possible mining methods - sublevel open stoping, loader cut and fill with ramp access and sublevel caving - were investigated and the decision was made to mine the orebody by transverse sublevel longhole stopes and pillars with trackless equipment and ramp access between the major working levels.
