Gold in sulfide ores is associated predominantly with sulfide minerals and occurs as both microscopic and submicroscopic particles. In non-refractory sulfide ores, gold occurs mainly as coarse- and medium-grained particles. Minute inclusions and submicroscopic gold usually account for a minor portion. In contrast, gold in refractory sulfide ores occurs mainly as minute particles and submicroscopic gold, and microscopic gold usually accounts for an insignificant portion. In gold ores containing carbonaceous material, the preg-robbing nature of carbonaceous material may impose challenges on gold extraction and cause gold losses. To extract gold from refractory sulfide ores, the ore needs to be finely ground and preoxidation is often required. Sulfide host minerals must first be oxidised to create a porous structure through which the cyanide leach solution can penetrate to reach the colloidal gold particles. The oxidation is traditionally achieved by roasting, autoclaving or bacterial oxidation. In carbonaceous sulfide ores exhibiting a preg-robbing nature, the carbonaceous material needs to be treated by roasting, autoclaving or other means to minimise the preg-robbing effect. As a predictive and troubleshooting tool, the gold deportment study plays an important role in gold metallurgy. It determines the deportment of gold in an ore or mill product and identifies the mineralogical issues that may affect or may have affected gold extraction. The information acquired from a gold deportment study can be used to assist in process selection, flow sheet development, recovery improvement and reagent optimisation.CITATION:Zhou, J, 2013. Barrick has successfully developed the thiosulfate leaching process to treat sulfidic high preg-robbing ores. The process was developed through rigorous bench test programs and proved in pilot campaigns and demo plant operations. The process uses calcium thiosulfate as a leaching reagent, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a mean of reagent recovery. The Hunter Region, with a major part of the coal resources of New South Wales and a long history of coal mining, has experienced a rapid expansion of coal resource development in recent years. While there are inevitable conflicts between mining, urban development and related infrastructure, and between mining and other resources, the application of sound planning practices, and improved co-operation and co-ordination among the various parties, helps to reduce such conflicts. The planning process involves consideration of factors such as transport- ation (including port facilities), mine subsidence, provision for surface facilities, a,iC the need for buffer 'ones. In addition, provision must be made for urban expansion, often co-existing or in close proximity to present or future coal mining development. Approval of coal mining developments takes place within the legislative framework of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979 (EPA Act), the Coal Mining Act, 1973 (CM Act) and the Mining Act, 1973. Considerable effort has gone into stream- lining and co-ordinating the procedures under these Acts. The EPA Act provides for regional and local environmental plans, as well as a linked process of development control and environmental impact assessment. The CM Act provides for the grant of exploration and coal mining titles and mechanisms for the responsible management of Mining.

"The Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling (GeM) comminution index (CI) was developed as part of the AMIRA P843 GeMIII project. Drill core geochemistry samples were passed through a Boyd Crusher with standardised settings and the resulting particle size distribution (PSD) was measured using sieves.Disadvantages of the original measurement were the relatively coarse crush size, requiring a second pass of crushing for geochemical sample preparation, and the limitation of throughput caused by the sieving step. At Antamina, the measurement has been modified to use a 2.2 mm crusher size setting, which permits a single pass. The PSD is measured using a Camsizer, an automated optical sizing instrument. The Camsizer sample is a +180 µm fraction, used to avoid passing too many fines through the instrument and slowing down the measurement. In the sieving step, the weights of the two fractions are recorded and subsequently used to normalise the distribution measured by the Camsizer. In this way, the throughput of the Camsizer can match that of the Boyd Crusher. The PSD data are therefore measured without penalising the throughput of the sample laboratory.The normalised PSD distributions are used to derive modified CI parameters, based on the slope and intercept of the breakage product size distribution, which are indirect measures of the material breakage hardness.Fifty samples were selected as a training set, each sample a composite of five or six individual assay intervals and each with its own measured CI. The average PSDs were calculated for the composites and used to calculate a composite CI. The intact half of the core, approximately 40 kg, was tested to measure the BWi, A*b and crushability. The results were used to develop predictive algorithms for these hardness parameters.A further 50 composites were chosen for lab testing, to serve as a blind test of the algorithms. Social licence to operate is becoming part of a mining company’s DNA in the same way as health and safety. Consequently, mining companies are receiving increasing pressure from their shareholders to ensure that they add enduring value to the local communities in which they operate. Apart from the shareholders, a company has responsibility to suppliers, customers, employees, the government and the community, which means under the social responsibility model they must be accountable to the other stakeholders. External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of mines to operate. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving matters such as the focus on safety, responsible mining and resource management, sustainability issues, profitability and productivity. Considering this, it is expected that the widespread implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) related practices across the mining industry in the next ten years will increase, not just for the big players but for juniors as well. Companies, investors, governments and insurers who fail to act on ESG matters are to likely face greater risks. Demonstrating leadership in ESG will ultimately become a differentiating factor and market participants have much to gain from embracing ESG stewardship as part of their competitive advantage. Stock Exchanges have an important role to play in advancing sustainability in the capital markets. It is for this reason that the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative was founded to serve as a global platform for exploring how exchanges can enhance performance on ESG issues and encourage sustainable investment. The SSE initiative provides an effective platform for dialogue between the United Nations, stock exchanges, investors, companies and regulators in the mining industry. The paper will explain why ESG reporting is crucial for the survival of a mining company and how the lack of transparency could be detrimental to its public image and shareholder relations. The paper will also identify bodies that regulate ESG reporting, as well as the available tools that provide guidelines on reporting ESG matters. Key ESG reporting parameters (at a global scale) will also be highlighted.

Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited operates one of the largest producing gold mines in the world. The annual production of 76 tons of gold from 12 million tons of ore treated is obtained mainly from underground sources. Daily some 6.6 km of stope face is blasted and 41 tons of explosives is used to break the rock. The mine employs 45 000 men of whom 35 000 work underground. The company operates nine large vertical shaft systems of which seven extend more than 2000 m below surface and an eighth, currently being sunk, will bottom at 3700 m below surface.

Although most New Zealand coals are low in ash, there are situations where high ash coals could be won. Not all high ash coals can be upgraded by physical means, since the ash is either inherent in the coal or bound in such a way to make its physical removal either impractical or uneconomic. Nevertheless, the authors believe, the situations where high amounts of ash can be economically removed by physical means to make a saleable product are considerable.

This paper presents the results of in-situ and laboratory investigations into a mining method which utilises conventional continuous mining techniques to carry out two passes in thick coal seams, resulting in the development of stable pillars with relatively small width dimensions and heights up to 6 m. Geotechnical investigations included structural mapping, brightness logging and standard laboratory testing. Virgin stress was measured using overcoring techniques. Two approaches to pillar design were used in the study. These were; pillar design based on empirical formulae and laboratory testing, and pillar disign using calibrated mathematical models. A trial panel was developed at 300 m depth to study pillar deformation and stress changes due to mining. The extent of rib deformation was studied using borescopes and extensometers. In-situ geotechnical measurements were used to calibrate displacement discontinuity and finite element mathematical models of the coal seam. These models were then used to predict the behaviour of a small panel of pillars which were to be developed to 6 m height. The mining method was shown to be feasible provided adequate rib support was installed. The benefit of rib support was found to be two-fold, in that it increased confinement of the pillar in zones of low horizontal stress, while reducing horizontal stress relaxation in zones of high horizontal virgin stress. The possiblity of roof control by designing the small pillars to yield on retreat is discussed.

The oolitic iron ore reserves in Lisakovsky, North Kazakhstan represent quite a challenging deposit both from a technological and from a resource point of view. The difficulties in processing such types of ore are connected with the extremely fine dissemination of phosphorus and gangue minerals inside the oolitic formations. The goethite crystals are cemented in their structure by aluminosilicates with quartz and other gangue minerals and dissemination is so fine that they are not separable by physical methods. The laboratory tests performed for dephosphorisation show that the combination of alkaline roasting followed by low intensity magnetic separation and acid leaching enables the obtaining of high grade iron concentrate. The magnetic separation performed ahead of leaching is effi cient as a means of buffering the high pH by washing out the soluble salts and the excess of base and after leaching facilitates the removal of secondary liberated gangue minerals in the non-magnetic fraction. As a consequence, phosphorous content is dropped to a more acceptable level for the ferrous metallurgy and iron grade and recovery reach 61.6 and 80.8 per cent respectively.

It is possible to closely simulate the product sizing distribution from an industrial rod mill by the correct choice of parameters in laboratory batch milling. For laboratory batch rod milling, changes in per cent critical speed and per cent rod volume cause the product sizing distributions to move in parallel at a constant slope. For ball milling, larger sized media in batch milling grind more coarse material giving a closer simulation to the industrial rod mill product. Changing the feed size distribution by removal of coarse particles or addition of fine particles changes the product sizing distribution, but would not normally be practiced in laboratory testing. These data should be applicable to many instances where laboratory simulation of an industrial product size distribution is required.

The western Cordillera of North America, including more than 99% of Alaska, is made up of an agglomeration of litho-tectonic terranes, some of which have undergone large rotations and (or) translations. The larger terranes can be broadly grouped into a small number of composite terranes based on affinities in their lithology, structure, and tectonic evolution. The terranes reflect repeated episodes of marginal rifting as well as formation of marginal arcs, island arc chains, back-arc basins, and oceanic plateaus since late Proterozoic time. Accretion to the continental margin occurred mainly from Middle Triassic through Early Cretaceous time. Major northward dispersal of terranes was largely during the existence of the Kula plate from about 85-55 Ma. Major rotations are the mid-Cretaceous opening of the Arctic Ocean basin with counterclockwise rotation of Arctic Alaska and Laramide oroclinal bending of western Alaska. The present complex Cordilleran geology along the northeast Pacific rim is a sum of these earlier accretionary processes together with continued Cenozoic faulting and deformation that has been superimposed upon the agglomerated displaced terranes over a broad segment of the continental margin.

For many years, in numerous settings, the need for a language-fair and culture-fair assessment test has been identified as a significant issue for employment and selection for training of remote indigenous community members. Pivotal to the successful implementation and application of such a test is for it to gain the acceptance and trust of the local indigenous communities as a fair assessment and for it to provide organisations with an accurate predictive tool. However, when western tests have been used with indigenous groups, inherent language and cultural bias have had a significant negative impact in terms of community acceptance. These have also affected the accuracy of performance predictability. The Queensland Test was developed to overcome these problems. Originally developed for use in Papua New Guinea, it reduced training failures by 20 per cent. Later refinements were made and it was used with Aboriginal Australians. Since 2002, assessment tests have been used by the Freeport mine in West Papua to support their recruitment, selection and training processes for the local indigenous community, the Seven Suku Tribes. The initial process included the application of standard æwesternÆ assessment tests, which did not provide valid selection predictions, with community members and elders describing these tests as unfair and the organisation being concerned that the results were not accurate. A trial of the Queensland Test was conducted and a high correlation was established between the performance of FreeportÆs current Seven Suku employees as assessed by their managers and their Queensland Test results. Based on the results of this pilot the Queensland Test was successfully implemented as the primary selection tool for potential employees from these local indigenous groups. The testing materials and method gained community trust and support, with tribal elders describing the Queensland Test as a fair and suitable selection tool for their community members. Such results have sparked an interest within the Australian Mining industry, with similar results being reported from a recent trial. The Queensland Test has been implemented at a major site in Queensland and is being investigated for use elsewhere.

Sphalerite flotation without Cu activation in the presence of iron ions has been reported and studied as a function of pH, dissolved oxygen content and pulp potential with both single mineral and ore samples (Leroux, Rao and Finch, 1987; Xu et al, 1992; Zhang, Rao and Finch, 1992). The flotation was attributed to ferric hydroxy xanthate. As a prelude to surface analysis to try to identify the species responsible, bulk precipitates formed from iron salt and xanthate solutions under different conditions were obtained and analysed. Analysis techniques included ultraviolet spectroscopy,infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy. It is tentatively concluded that the bulk precipitates contain three ferric components, two hydroxy xanthates (Fe(OH)2X and Fe(OH)X2) and iron oxide (FeO.).

The Mount Gibson goidmine is located at the southern end of the Retaliation greenstone belt within the Murchison Province, approximately 300 km northeast of Perth, Western Australia. Economic gold mineralization occurs in the upper part of a Tertiary lateritic surface; its ultimate source presumably being Archaean greenstones. Gold is present in the laterite profile over a distance of 4 km in four separate prospects, from north to south, Mount Gibson Well, Midway, Orion and Tobias Find, the two last constituting the Mount Gibson mine. The area has'low relief. A low ridge to the west of the mineralized zone is formed mainly of rubble with minor outcrops of mafic volcanic and intrusive rocks. The terrain slopes gently to the northeast, and the maximum relief, in the vicinity of the mineralization, is about 20 m. The weathering profile comprises, from the surface: (i) soil, windblown sand or colluvium (thin), (ii) laterite; hardcap (including ferricrete and lesser silcrete and calcrete) is overlain by loose nodules and pisolites, and passes downwards into a mottled zone of variably ferruginized clay, (iii) clay; mainly pale brown, cream or yellow in colour, but in places contains relic quartz veins or dark ferruginous zones, (iv) clay with fragments of altered rock; normally grey to pale green in colour but sometimes includes an oxidized iron-rich horizon just above the weathered/fresh rock interface, (v) bedrock. The complete profile varies from 10-100 m thick, averaging 20 m. Zone (ii) is commonly 3-5 m thick. Loose pisolites of this zone fill cavities in the massive ironstone left by former tree roots, and cover irregular depressions which may represent former stream courses. Samples, representing 3 m intervals down the holes, have been collected from cuttings taken from rotary drill-holes along each of four traverses; one traverse at each-of the northern prospects and two traverses in the Orion part of the mine area. These samples have been submitted for X-ray diffraction analysis and for chemical analysis for a wide range of elements. Bedrock lithologies have been determined from microscope studies of bottom-of-hole chips.

Batch flotation tests were conducted on a haematite-bearing Sishen iron ore slimes sample from South Africa using reverse cationic flotation. The effect of grinding on flotation performance, the flotation response of various key impurities in the sample, and the feasibility of increasing metal recovery by refloating tailings in a scavenger flotation step were investigated. The test results indicate that reverse cationic flotation is effective in rejecting impurities from the iron ore sample tested. From a head grade assaying 6.4 per cent SiO2, 2.14 per cent Al2O3, 0.402 per cent K2O, 0.082 per cent P and 0.194 per cent TiO2, the levels of impurities were reduced to 1.83 per cent SiO2, 0.88 per cent Al2O3, 0.095 per cent K2O, 0.066 per cent P and 0.174 per cent TiO2 in the final concentrate at a Fe recovery of 74 per cent. The flotation response of SiO2, Al2O3 and K2O were found to be better than that of P and TiO2. The testwork demonstrated that grinding to 80 per cent passing about 49 microns is essential for upgrading the Sishen iron ore to produce >67 per cent Fe concentrate grade. This grind size corresponds to about 80 per cent liberation of haematite from the gangue minerals. Fe recoveries up to 76 per cent were obtained by refloating the rougher tailings in a scavenger stage, with little effect on the final concentrate grade. Size-by-size Fe recovery data obtained indicated that particles below ten microns were mostly lost in the desliming stage conducted prior to flotation whilst some reported to the froth by entrainment. Some of the coarser haematite-gangue composite particles reported to the froth product by genuine flotation.

Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a promising process for obtai- ning energy from coal, which is either unmineable with current mining techno- logy or uneconomic to recover, using conventional methods, in the present energy market situation. There are several coal fields, which could become new coal reserves, if the UCG process were successfully applied. In the 1960's Japanese researchers made a number of basic studies and field tests into UCG, although not all of them produced favourable results. This paper reviews Japanese research on UCG. This includs basic studies into coal gasification using a small, tube reactor fed by air and oxygen, and also large scale model stu- dies(reactor size of 8.Om x 2.4m x 1.5 m). Field test results from Akabira colliery in Hokkaido and a feasibility study of power generation using UCG from a coal field in Hokkaido are also Presented.

From time to time failures occur in structures made of lead, and the failure may be due to corrosion involving a definite thinning of the lead sheet, or it may be of such a nature that cracks develop and the lead appears to disintegrate. The idea of lead cracking will at once suggest something abnormal, for common experience shows that this metal is very ductile and will withstand considerable bending without showing any sign of fracture. Cracking, on the other hand, is usually associated with brittleness.Fig. 1 is a natural-size photograph of a cracked sheet of lead. Prior to photographing, the sheet was etched byimmersion in a solution of ammonium molybdate. Several characteristics of this crack will be evident. First of all it is distinctly a zigzag crack, and secondly it passes between, rather than through, certain well-defined areas which appear bright in the photograph. This is particularly noticeable at the lower end where the crack appears to terminate.

"This paper discusses a method to build a calibrated comminution circuit model, using historic operating data and blend information that is useful for forecasting and optimising plant performance, as well as evaluating expansion opportunities. A preferred method for building a calibrated power-based comminution model is discussed and justified based on two case studies, offering low-cost and effective strategies to utilise existing information for the maximum possible benefit.The first example is the Lefa Gold Mine located in Guinea, West Africa operating a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball milling circuit with recycle crushing (SABC). Daily blend information and operating data was utilised to build and calibrate a power-based model of the comminution circuit. The least squares regression method was used to solve the SAG mill specific energy requirement and the operating work index (Wio) for each individual ore type. The calibrated model was used to evaluate expansion strategies to sustain throughput at higher proportions of fresh ore based on the proposed life-of-mine schedule.The second example is the Ok Tedi Copper-Gold Mine in Papua New Guinea operating a SAG and ball milling circuit (SAB). The circuit limitation would often shift between the SAG mill and the ball mill due to variable ore characteristics and feed blend. Typical SAG mill relief strategies, such as recycle crushing or secondary crushing, required significant capital expenditure and the potential throughput benefit would vary depending on ore type, making economic justification difficult. Daily blend information and operating data was used to build and calibrate a power-based model of the comminution circuit to identify ore types that might benefit from higher blast intensities to increase fines content, thus relieving the SAG mill limitation and increasing overall throughput without a major capital investment.Citation:Zawadski, A L and Putland, B G, 2016. The tailing retreatment project rated at 10 000 t/day commenced operations in October 1982. The operation consists of dredging, feed preparation, cyanide leaching and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold recovery followed by Zadra atmospheric stripping and electrowinning. For the first two years the operation was adversely affected by excessive cyanide consumption and low gold extraction. Investigations demonstrated that the very fine, or slime, fraction of the tailing was the dominant consumer of cyanide and dissolved oxygen. The plant flowsheet was subsequently modified by inclusion of 80 - 100 mm dia. cyclones for slimes separation and a 31 m dia. thickener for water recovery. Treatment of deslimed feed in the CIP plant has reduced sodium cyanide consumption from an average 1.85 kg/t to 1.15 kg/t. The reduced oxygen consumption by the CIP plant feed has resulted in higher dissolved oxygen levels, frequently reaching supersaturation after 4 to 5 h contact time. This has allowed much improved gold extraction from the existing CIP plant capacity. Gold extraction from the mixed pyritic siliceous tailing has improved from an average U prior to desliming to a current 57%. Investigations are continuing on the recovery of gold from the discarded slimes.
