Pilot-Plant Testing of Ammoniacal-Cyanidation for Gold Recovery from Copper Gold-Bearing Ore The results of pilot-plant tested ammoniacal-cyanidation of gold recovery from copper gold-bearing ore are presented in this paper. This ore is from a deposit of Russian Federation with gold and copper grade 9.5 g/t and 0.4 per cent, respectively. Copper is largely present as malachite and azurite. The presence of chalcopyrite and bornite is also observed. In order to recover gold, gravity is recommended. Two options of ammoniacal-cyanidation using leaching of gravity tails, CIP and filtration, were tested. It was found that ammoniacal-cyanidation using filtration of leaching tailings and recycled solutions is the most optimal option. The proposed flow sheet provides for 89.7 per cent gold recovery from gravity tailings at the consumption of NaCN 0.9 kg/t and (NH4)2CO3 7.5 - 9 kg/t. Compared to conventional cyanidation, this technology decreases the consumption of sodium cyanide from 4 up to 0.9 kg/t at the same gold recovery. It can be recommended for the treatment of copper gold-bearing ores with the similar composition.

The design of a mine should aim to optimise the market value by maximising revenues whilst minimising costs. In open pit mining, the nature of the extraction technique translates this objective into the maximum recovery of reserves while minimising waste extraction subject to technical, economical and safety constraints. Since the introduction by Lerchs and Grossman, in 1965, of a model that is now considered a classic in the area, open pit design has reached a level of maturity and acceptance by industry. These models are being used on a regular basis by designers and planners.This paper proposes a new alternative model for open pit design. It is based on genetic algorithms (GA) and exploits a reduction of the number of decision variables of the more traditional techniques. The novel approach provides more flexibility than traditional models; it can also be extended to consider planning problems that traditional open pit design models are not capable of handling. The algorithm has been designed for two dimensional problems and tested in a simple instance. The results obtained in this simple test are encouraging and are a good supporting argument for the development of a GA model capable of handling three-dimensional (3D) instances. The model presented in this paper is just a first step towards a full GA to solve the pit design problem and it is believed that novel tools like the one presented herein could become great allies in tackling challenging problems in open pit design, an illustration of such a challenging problem is presented and discussed.

Geological information is essential for a diversity of public and other purposes, including land use planning, hazard mitigation, and the exploration and sustainable use of natural resources. This is especially important in New Zealand, where the complexity of the geology is due to its position on an active plate boundary - the ultimate cause of earthquakes, mountain building, subsidence and volcanic activity. The geological setting also controls the origin and distribution of New Zealand's varied mineral and energy resources. Providing information about the origin, quality and quantity of mineral resources has long been seen as a key function of national geological organisations such as the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences. Such information is essential for wise land-use decisions under the Resource Management Act. One of the major goals of the Institute is to quickly and effectively disseminate research results to interested users. The most effective and internationally accepted method of presenting geological data is by means of geological maps, which show the distribution of rock types and structural features at the surface. Most countries have ongoing gelogical mapping programmes, and in recent years the need for up-to-date, reliable information has led to a trend to accelerate basic geological mapping (eg US National Geological Mapping Act 1992; Australian National Mapping Accord 1990; Plan 2000 in the UK). Over the last 25 years, the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences and its predecessors (NZ Geological Survey and DSIR Geology and Geophysics) have concentrated on detailed mapping of priority areas selected on the basis of economic and scientific interest. This has included remapping of Nelson-West Coast and Coromandel, regions with high mineral potential, for which 1:63 360 or 1:50 000 maps have been prepared.

concentrations) and physical nature of receiving streams, which in turn affects the stream ecosystem. Benthic macroinvertebrates are used to illustrate these impacts, and to investigate natural recovery in affected streams. In Charming Creek, a severely impacted stream in the Buller District, the macroinvertebrate community recovers diversity and the proportion of sensitive species (EPT) in the community is more significant with increasing downstream distance from the source of AMD. This is most likely due to dilution of AMD contaminated water by tributaries to the Charming Creek mainstream. Other impacted systems with less dilution from tributaries did not display similar levels of recovery. The effectiveness of remediation products BauxsolÖ and Zeolite was investigated using laboratory trials. Both products mitigated the toxicity of AMD and enhanced the survival of mayflies exposed to AMD contaminated water. Such products may be of use in the New Zealand environment but are likely to be most effective in conjunction with other systems (eg wetlands). Mitigating the impacts of AMD on stream ecosystems needs to include systems to directly address water chemistry issues (low pH, high metal concentrations) as a component of a holistic approach to restoring environmental conditions.

Mining is both a high risk and a long term business. This is dramatically illustrated by the fact that, on average, the explorer will expend over $30 million in a ten year period for each significant economic discovery. The time required to complete the exploration process is one of the most substantial commitments made by any mining company. For example the time lag between the implementation of an exploration programme and an economic discovery is variously estimated to take two to ten years. The ore definition phase following discovery currently takes between two and five years while subsequent mine development may take one to two years in easy situations and up to 8 in difficult environments. In most countries the critical path through the early stages is determined largely by technical considerations but in almost all countries the path through the later phases is dictated by the plethora of permits, licences and community involvement steps.

The Ebor Volcano in north eastern New South Wales is an eroded example of a central-type intraplate volcanic-intrusive complex. It is of Miocene age (19 - 20 Ma) and has similarities to other central-type volcanoes in eastern Australia which may represent manifestations of sub-lithospheric hotspot activity. Thick lava flows are exposed around the Great Escarpment and are dominated by a tholeiitic basaltic suite, ranging from ol-tholeiite to qz-tholeiite to icelandite with ages of 19.2 - 19.6 Ma. On its western edge, the tholeiitic lava suite probably overlies remnants of basanite flows belonging to the Eocene (~48 Ma) Doughboy province, but elsewhere, minor alkaline basaltic lavas may be coeval with the tholeiitic suite. Several felsic bodies were emplaced into the volcano at ~19.0 - 19.2 Ma and include subalkaline and peralkaline types. The Crescent Complex is a Miocene-age, strongly differentiated mafic to felsic intrusion in basement rocks and centrally located in pre-erosion reconstructions of the Ebor Volcano. It is interpreted to be a major feeder for the tholeiitic lavas based on age and composition. Evolution of the dominant tholeiitic suite proceeded from a parental ol-tholeiite magma, through qz-tholeiite, icelandite and small volumes of felsic rocks by fractionation of plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene and titanomagnetite, accompanied by enrichmentof SiO2, SFeOlMgO, alkalies and HFSE.

Management of information systems for data collection is essential to maintain data integrity and continuity, and manage loss control on a large world-class mine such as Telfer Gold Mine. This paper aims to describe the individual systems and protocols of geological data capture at Telfer, then focus on Quality Assurance Quality Control data as an example of loss control in practice. Loss control systems are required to provide capacity, flexibility, structure and management tools to enhance data interrogation. The data that have been collected can then provide geological, financial, environmental, and contractual information to optimise management of business best practice. Telfer Gold Mine is a wholly owned and operated subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited. The mine is located in a remote area of NW Western Australia, and has been operating for 20 years. Geological data have been collected at Telfer since 1973. The data include drilling, assay, geological, survey, structural and geophysical data. Data management has evolved through many systems with data stored on many different hardware and software platforms. Commencing in 1995, collation, standardisation and validation of the historic data was completed. This has resulted in the first Access based drill hole database incorporating all available drilling data. This drill hole database, now hosted in SQL Server, is the hub for all geology related data management systems. The Telfer Gold Mine Geology Department has developed a series of inter-related database systems in order to manage the core geology business issues. Databases relating to drill hole planning, drill contract management, geological logging, accounting (standard costing, forecasting, invoice reconciliation), quality control (QAQC), and environment rehabilitation have all been developed to manage loss control. Management effort to provide adequate data systems and protocols has driven the system from concept to utilisation. The improved productivity, data integrity and data analysis capabilities provided by the new database systems at Telfer have allowed for greater confidence in decision making. Systems such as the drill hole and QAQC databases, when utilised in the proper manner provide up-to-date data analysis for resource audits and contract negotiations. The loss control systems are essential to maintain confidence in data integrity and hence directly effect the future of mining at Telfer.

Within the last decade, major research discoveries have been made in the submarine realm of magmatic and hydrothermal activity of arc-backarc systems in the southwestern Pacific. These include identification of numerous particulate-poor, gas-rich (CO2-CH4) hydrothermal plumes emanating from arc front volcanoes, actively forming porphyry-copper-gold style mineralisation, and new backarc spreading systems erupting alkali basalt-trachyandesite magmas. Major goals of these studies have been identification of modern analogs to ancient volcanogenic massive sulfide ore bodies, and quantification of the volatile fluxes though supra-subduction zone systems.

The Mining Innovation – State of Play was initiated three years ago by VCI in partnership with the University of Western Australia. The ambition was to create a ‘think tank’ type platform to support industry discussion on how it is performing in terms of innovation at a strategic level, what needs to change in the industry ‘ecosystem’, and how businesses may more effectively develop their strategy and architecture to innovate for competitive advantage.The drivers for this ambition were straightforward. The industry recognises itself as being conservative with respect to innovation and it knows the business and community endowment dividend from getting better at innovation is large; however, much of the material that seeks to provide insight on innovation tends to be drawn from industries that do not have the same high capital, long life cycle and market uncertainty characteristics as that faced by mining. Material that does focus on mining innovation is orientated towards technical innovation, not innovation strategy. There exists a significant knowledge gap, and filling it is valuable to both mining businesses and communities.The 2014 Mining Innovation State of Play report (Stanway, Griebel and Mahoney, 2014), based on a survey of over 230 mining executives, uncovered a range of insights but left several questions unresolved. The people with the best perspective on these questions are CEOs. They can see the business issues with sufficient clarity and have the influence to shape both the industry and its organisations, as seen in Figure 1. Discussing these questions with the view to progressing our collective understanding was the primary reason this interview series was conducted.Unsurprisingly, interviewing 15 CEOs and Chairpersons from different industries and commodities, across the globe resulted in a broad range of views. The discussions were frank and often blunt in assessing the short comings in the industry and suggestions for improvement. This degree of candour is hugely valuable as a basis for improvement. Study on Basic Theory of the Grain Settlement in Fluidised Bed This paper takes thick goal grains (less than 1.5 cm) as research object. According to different densities and particle sizes, thick goal grains are divided into 20 kinds of narrow density and narrow size level average grains. Free settling and hindered settling tests are respectively carried out in ?100 fluidised bed thick goal separators. Hindered settlement includes hindered settling velocity test and measurements of suspension density. Results show follows. (1) Fluid state in separator belongs to transition region. Alien's law is the appropriate formula of thick coal particles free settlement terminal velocity. (2) The main factors affecting hindered settling velocity are the number of solid particles in medium and the structure feature of the particle group. The bigger volume fractions of solids ? is, the smaller decreasing velocity coefficient of particle hindered settlement ¯ becomes. In the organism from bottom to top, density of suspended particles in fluidised bed gradually decreases, but near the top of the suspended particles, the density increased slightly. With increase of density and size, suspension density reducing extent increases from bottom to top of separators.

Mining schools around the world, many unfortunately now closed, were often established to teach the techniques of narrow vein mining and associated processing to students studying part-time while working in the industry. This arrangement ensured graduates (or æassociatesÆ) had a mix of skills and knowledge invaluable to the industry.It is argued that there is still a need to educate students in these narrow vein techniques and that there will be a growing demand for such graduates with a high level appreciation of this type of mining. There is also a need for innovation in narrow vein mining and processing to develop specific technologies and allow the use of techniques applied in æbulk miningÆ to achieve improvements in productivity, safety and economic performance.This paper aims to review the situation with regard to education and innovation in narrow vein mining.CITATION:Hall, S, 2012. Chatree Gold Mine is currently the only modern day gold mine operating in Thailand, and is situated approximately equidistant from Chiang Mai in the north and Bangkok in the south. Environmental guidelines set by the Thai authorities require Chatree Gold Mine to achieve a Total Cyanide level of 20 ppm or less in the process plant discharge slurry stream prior to release into the tailings storage facility. This paper describes both the initial difficulties faced in achieving compliance on this limit utilising the conventional INCO SO2/Air cyanide destruction system and the subsequent process improvements initiated to both the leaching process and the standard INCO process to achieve the current compliance levels of approximately 99/100 shifts. Improvements were focussed on the dual aspects of reducing the formation of WAD cyanide and ferrocyanide species in the leaching circuit coupled with process changes to improve removal of the ferrocyanide species from solution during the cyanide reduction stage.

Currently, two multispectral remote sensing satellites are providing regular data over New Zealand; aircraft scanner services are available from Australia.; operational radar satellite services are yet to materialise. The advantages and disadvantages of the various data types are compared and contrasted. Some image processing considerations are outlined.

The flow function of an iron ore material governs its flowability characteristics in material handling chains within the resource industry. A uniaxial compression test is able to obtain a flow function more rapidly comparing to the Jenike direct shear test; nevertheless, the results often exhibit lower rankings using the former method. This study aims to investigate the fundamental stress states within the test specimen that lead to this phenomenon, and to introduce a new uniform density specimen preparation method for a uniaxial compression test, in order to achieve comparative flow functions as for a Jenike direct shear test. The minimisation of the wall friction effect and achievement of the critical state when preparing a uniaxial specimen are explicitly discussed. Experimental investigations on flow functions of a suite of Australian iron ore samples were conducted using both the uniform density uniaxial compression test and the Jenike direct shear test. Results from both methods were found to be comparable, providing the specimen exhibits cohesive flow behaviours. "The phased application of statistical process control (SPC) infers that processes are classifiable as pre-SPC (or phase zero), phase I and phase II processes, with different objectives being pursued in the different phases. Phase zero processes, defined as processes affected by assignable causes of variation, are characterised as follows: out-of-control with unknown autocorrelation structure having an unknown statistical distribution not performing consistently on target with minimum variability potentially incapable of conforming to the product specifications. The objectives of phase I SPC is to obtain estimates of the mean (µ), variance (s2), probability density function (f(X)) and the autocorrelation structure, as well as transforming the process into a phase II process (defined as a process conforming to specifications and performing on target with minimum variability). As in any other type of research or pragmatic improvement intervention, sampling is required is to achieve these objectives. The challenge of deciding a phase I sampling plan is multifarious since it has to cope with the aforementioned effects of assignable causes and provide for rigour estimates of the unknown parameters. Furthermore, deciding sampling plans in phase I invariably presents a classical catch-22 situation: appropriate sampling is required to determine the autocorrelation structure of a variable, but knowledge of the autocorrelation structure is required to formulate an appropriate sampling plan. This paper suggests, for random variables, guidelines to formulate sampling plans, and presents a methodology to estimate the inherent process parameters of process variables and an approach to identify assignable causes in phase I. CITATION:Breytenbach, W P, 2014.
