A SERIES of papers on strategic and otherwise important mineral products was prepared some ten years ago under the joint auspices of the Committee on Foreign and Domestic Mining Policy of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the Committee on Industrial Preparedness of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. These papers were later published in a joint volume entitled International Control of Minerals (1925). Amongst them was one on manganese. The Subcommittee on Manganese prepared its paper in two forms. One was intended for inclusion with the series above referred to and approached its subject more particularly as an international problem. The other dealt more definitely with manganese as an element in the problem of national defense. This last was first written under date of January 24, 1924 as a confidential report, for and at the request of the War Department. It was later released and published, in slightly modified form, as a separate pamphlet by the Industrial Preparedness Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. After the lapse of eight years, in view of the vital position of manga-nese in the problem of industrial preparedness against a war emergency, the War Department made a request to have the conclusions of 1924 reviewed and brought up to date. To comply with this request the manganese subcommittee was reconvened (with a somewhat changed personnel) and exhaustive studies were once more made of the entire subject of manganese. A new report, with specific recommendations, was submitted to the War Department in February, 1932. This second report is now herewith released for publication. Certain specific conclusions and recommendations as expressed to the War Department are omitted. Otherwise the report stands as prepared and submitted by the manganese subcommittee of 1931. A model for transport processes in liquid mixtures is discussed which supposes that the elementary act involves a position exchange between two species and that the exchange is so confined by the solvent cage as to occur nearly isosterically. The rate-determining step, thus, is likened to a bi-molecular reaction and is so treated, using absolute rate theory. The cage model has been applied to diffusion, thermal diffusion, sedimentation and viscosity, but only the first and last of these phenomena are emphasized in the present paper. The model leads to semi-empirical relationships between the absolute value for a digusion coefficient and the activation energy for diffusion, between mutual and self-diffusion coefficients and for the variation of the viscosity of a binary mixture with composition. These are discussed in relation to experimental data for various systems, including hydrocarbon mixtures. It is shown that the proposed viscosity equation and seven other commonly used ones all may be regarded as special cases of a single general relationship; a brief critical analysis is made of the basis of selection of one or the other for data fitting or interpolation. INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL THEORY The present paper covers a brief discussion of a cage model for transport processes in liquid mixtures and how this model may be useful in treating the diffusional behavior and the viscosity of such systems. Since diffusion requires the more detailed treatment, it will be taken up first, and the model then applied to viscosity. There are two types of diffusion coefficients that may be measured experimentally, apart from thermal diffusion quantities. The first is the mutual or binary diffusion coefficient, D which may be defined in terms of Fick's first law. This states that the permeation, or flux P, is proportional to the concentration gradient. In the usual experiment, P is measured relative to a frame of reference fixed with respect to the medium (e.g., the diaphragm in a diffusion cell); as a consequence, the same value of D is obtained regardless of whether P and C refer to Component 1 or to Component 2; i.e., there is only one independent mutual diffusion coefficient for a binary system. In addition to D there will be various self-diffusion coefficients. defined in terms of the gradient in labelled species i and its permeation in an otherwise uniform medium. The thermodynamic approach to mutual diffusion supposes that the actual driving force is the gradient of the chemical potential, i.e., that In the case of a dilute solution of solute, Eqs. 1 and 3 lead to the Einstein equation, If the solution is ideal and the friction coefficient is taken to be then the familiar Stokes- Einstein equation results. Mutual and self-diffusion coefficients can not be related on general thermodynamic grounds; it is necessary to invoke some additional assumptions, i.e., a model; several such have been proposed. Hartley and Crank' supposed the existence of separate, intrinsic diffusion coefficients (Dl and D2) for each component, essentially corresponding to the two self-diffusion coefficients. The two flows can not be independent, however, but must be coupled through the usual restriction that there be no net volume flow. For an ideal solution. one then obtains' Glasstone, et al' treated diffusion in terms of absolute rate theory, but their approach otherwise resembled the previously mentioned one in that each species was considered to move with respect to the general medium in a manner determined by its individual jump distance and specific rate constant. For other than dilute solutions, a coupling of flows leading to an equation such as Eq. 6 would again be present. However, as required by Eq. 6, one does expect that the self-diffusion coefficient for the solute and the mutual-diffusion coefficient for the system become identical at infinite dilution. Lamm4 recognized that there should be three distinctive interactions in a two-component system-1-1, 1-2 and 2-2 — and, therefore, proposed three rather than two fundamental friction coefficients. Mutual diffusion resulted from 1-2 interactions only, and self-diffusion resulted from 1-2 plus either 1-1 or 2-2 interactions. Again, a collective coupling between all motions was imposed to meet the condition of no net volume flow. Laity' has shown how to convert the Onsager equations to a form very similar to Lamm's. The electrolytic copper refinery at Copper Cliff, Ont., is operated by the Ontario Refining Co., Ltd. The associated companies behind the enterprise are the International Nickel Co. of Canada, Ltd.; The American Metal Co.; The Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd.; and Ventures, Ltd. The plant was the outgrowth of the rapid development of copper resources in the nickel-copper ores of the Frood and other great mines in the Sudbury district, and of the desire to have all primary production units grouped together as closely as possible. The refinery is near the intersection of the Sault Ste. Marie to Sudbury highway and the Canadian Pacific Railway. It is about one mile south of The International Nickel Company's smelter at Copper Cliff. The standard-gage track systems of the refinery and of the smelter are connected by a standard-gage timber railroad trestle that crosses the railway and the highway by means of steel girder spans. The Canadian National Railway has access to the plant by means of this trestle and the nickel company's tracks, so that the refinery has connections with both the Canadian Pacific and the Canadian National railways, as well as a direct connection with The International Nickel Company's smelter, from which the bulk of the copper to be refined is hauled by the latter's electric locomotives. Buildings The refinery (Fig. 1) covers approximately 60 acres, enclosed by an unscalable chain-link fence. The main buildings have a content of 23,000,000 cu. ft., with a total roof area of approximately 600,000 sq. ft. and near them are the substation, cooling pond and main standard-gage track system (Fig. 2). A ladder track for car storage extends 1200 ft. south of the coal-pulverizer tracks and the scale house is on this spur. The intake and pumphouse for fresh water supply are at Kelly Lake, about 3000 ft. south of the plant. The purpose of this article is not to compare one type of grinding machinery with another and to conclude from a series of tests that one particular machine is superior to all others. Neither is the reader asked to tire himself with the details of many tests to prove the statements herein made. The Chilean mill stands today almost an outcast from the milling world. It ranks with the applicant for a job who has been given a trial along with others and condemned because he was not able to perform the definite task assigned as well as the others, and was forever eliminated. The judges did not tarry long enough to try this aspirant in a field of a slightly different nature. Even though it has been condemned, the writer contends that the published records will indicate that the trials were never shifted into the field of greatest efficiency for the . Chilean mill. Those of us who cling to this outcast as a fine grinder in our milling operations do not wish, naturally, to be condemned also, with the machine, and yet we feel that we are classed as behind the times, at least in this phase of our milling judgment. Hence there is considerable personal feeling in our efforts. During the last few years there have been published several papers on the relative merits of the various grinding machines. In two of these articles a comparison was made between Chilean mills and cylindrical grinders. In each case the Chilean mill came out second best from about all standpoints. The outstanding feature in these comparisons would seem to be the decided attempt to keep all conditions the same, so that each machine could be judged on its merit. As Mr. David Cole states,1 "We are inclined to regard a direct comparison of grinders arranged side by side, and making a product that affords as nearly as possible the same screen measure, as the Supreme Court in these grinding matters." The writer agrees that this is the very best method for true comparison between machines. The results in the two detailed tests should give the relative merits of the two grinders in doing the work assigned. And they probably do. ALL electrical geophysical methods depend for their operation upon the effects produced by the flow of an electric current. By studying these effects it is possible to predict the general axis of current flow. The greater flow of current is in the path of greatest, effective conductivity; and since the effective conductivity of a mineralized zone is different from that of its surrounding envelope (usually much greater), it is possible to locate such a mineralized zone by the distribution of current. Due consideration must be given, of course, to geological structure, to type of mineralization, and to other factors. A number of methods are used to cause this flow of current, and various methods are available for detecting the presence of such current flow and for studying its effects. In a rather detailed way, this paper will discuss the theoretical and practical phases of the inductive methods of geophysical prospecting. ELECTROMAGNETIC GENERATION OF AN ELECTROMOTIVE FORCE The inductive method is so named because the current flowing in the conductor is obtained by electromagnetic induction, instead of by the use of ground electrodes through which a current is passed as in the applied potential systems, or by direct contact with the orebody. An alternating current flowing in a coil will create an electromagnetic field around the coil. This field will have the same frequency as the current and will radiate or travel outward from the coil in closed magnetic or flux circuits: These flux circuits (in air or a homogeneous medium) will be perpendicular to the plane of the coil and will extend or travel outward with uniform velocity in every direction. Maximum field exists in the plane of the coil. Such a coil used for transmitting or as the "energizer" will exhibit similar figure-eight characteristics to those exhibited by the direction-finding coil which will be described in detail later.

Many investigators have attempted to determine the true nature of the internal changes taking place during aging. Merica, Waltenberg and Scottlt were the first to propose a theory of age-hardening. They attributed the age-hardening of duralumin to the precipitation of minute particles of the compound CuA12. Later Zay Jeffries and R. S. Archer2 augmented the above theory by suggesting that the small CuAl2 particles acted as "keys" causing "slip interference." Many other investigators3 have devoted much time to the mechanism of age-hardening, some corroborating the "precipitation" and "slip interference" theory, others coming to different conclusions because of effects that to them seemed unexplainable by the early theories; e.g., the increase of electrical resistance upon aging, the fact that no change in lattice parameter could be detected during the early stages of aging even at elevated temperatures, and the fact that the density did not change as would be predicted. In 1932, Merica revised4 his earlier precipitation theory to take care of these presumably anomalous effects. This revised theory, the "knot" theory, assumes that substantial age-hardening occurs before actual precipitation of solute as discrete particles. The assumed mechanism is one of diffusion of solute atoms into groups forming distorted regions which act as "hard" spots and cause slip interference. These "knots" are assumed to have approximately the same lattice arrangement as the solvent. The anomalous behavior of lattice parameter, density, and electrical conductivity, require a modification of the simple precipitation-hardening theory, only if it is assumed that the precipitation of minute particles during aging has the same effects on these properties as the formation of large particles under equilibrium conditions. The Hiawatha mine, a producer of iron ore, is near the City of Iron River, in Iron County, Michigan. This mine, operated by The M. A. Hanna Co., has been chosen by the author as a typical iron mine in this district that is using the cut-and-fill mining system. General Geology The Hiawatha ore body lies along the steeply dipping north limb of a syncline that closes around on the east end to form a bathtub-shaped structure. Throughout this major structure there are very many smaller wrinkles or folds, which vary the direction as well as the thickness of the ore body. The total length of the ore formation with minor interruptions so far developed is about 3600 ft. The ore body throughout the entire present depth of 2000 ft. has averaged approximately 40 ft. in thickness; it is somewhat narrower at the upper levels and shows a marked increase in thickness on the bottom levels. This increase in thickness probably indicates that the bottom of the trough is near or that a major monoclinal fold has been encountered, which flattens the ore and gives apparent horizontal thickening. The footwall of this ore body is generally a black, graphitic slate, very rich in iron sulphides, quite combustible when exposed to air, and very treacherous to handle during mining operations. The hanging wall, in most places, is a cherty, fairly hard iron formation, and in general stands quite well ill open stopes. There are places, however, where black slate is found in both the hanging wall and the footwall, which makes mining difficult, as the black slate tends to slough off after being exposed to air. In these places it becomes necessary to leave a scale of ore 5 to 6 ft. thick on both hanging wall and footwall, which is not recovered. Fig. I shows a typical vertical cross section through the Hiawatha ore body. Type of Stoping Because of the size and shape of the ore body and the hard, dense structure of the ore, sublevel stoping has been an efficient and economical method of extracting the ore. This method, with various minor changes, has been used since the mine was opened in 1893. There have never been any stope-filling operations, however, until recent years, when crushing of pillars and black-slate fires forced the issue and methods were arrived at to fill all stopes. Development of Deeper Levels Shaft sinking to deeper levels in development operations has been done successfully by two methods without interference or hindrance to production. These systems are: I. Sinking an auxiliary winze a short distance from the shaft, then drifting back to the shaft location and putting up a pilot raise through to the bottom of the shaft. This raise is always in the manway compartment of the shaft, so that no work is ever done under a cage or skip. A 20-ft.

Foreword The three case histories and the liquid fuels planning scenario presented in this paper span a twenty year period, from the pioneering days of computers in the petroleum producing industry during the mid-fifties, to the energy crisis era of the seventies. Inasmuch as two of the main actors, Ian McKinnon and I, are featured in all three case histories, while I am currently involved in the fossil fuels scenario, this paper provides four related and personal spot readings along an evolutionary path: from the one dimensional technical domain to the multi-dimensional techno-socio-economic domain of computer applications in the petroleum industry. Coincident with this evolution in the direction of increasingly comprehensive and powerful computer applications, the evolution in hardware/software capability and in analytical power are also kept in perspective. The three case histories are: 1. The Bonnie Glen-Wizard Lake Case (Calgary, Alberta, 1955-1957); 2. The TransCanada-Great Lakes Gas Transmission Case (Ottawa-Washington, 1966); 3. The Westcoast Transmission - El Paso Pipelines Gas Export/ Import Case (Ottawa-Vancouver-Washington, 1966-1967). Until recently there were very few dry grinding rod mills used. The early installations performed as anticipated. In the last seven years a number of dry grinding rod mills have been made, most of which have been used for grinding iron ore. The recent installations have not operated as anticipated in accordance with practices learned from wet rod milling. The paper does not establish any definite rules for the application of dry grinding rod mills but does attempt to establish some guidelines that can be followed. The paper reviews a number of flowsheets describing the problems encountered and some of the solutions found. Completely dried compared to partially dried feed is reviewed. Problems encountered in scaling up from pilot plant to production-size mills are described. Rod sizing, effect of rod length, rod bending, rod breakage, and rod tangling are discussed. While wet grinding rod mills have been used for 50 years to grind ores and make specifications sands, dry grinding rod mills have only recently come into significant use in the mineral industries. Among the materials now being processed in dry grinding rod mills are (1) lead sinter, lead slag, and limestone; (2) iron ore; (3) silica; (4) cement clinker; and (5) coke. Because the application of wet grinding rod mills was well understood at the time that dry grinding rod mills were introduced, the criteria and guidelines for selecting the former were carried over to the selection of the latter - in some cases with the anticipated results, but in many cases not. It is the purpose of this paper to describe, through a series of flowsheets, some of the recent problems encountered with dry grinding rod mills, to point out the solutions to these problems, and to set forth some guidelines for the selection and application of these mills. When dry grinding rod mills came into use, the following facts about their wet grinding counterparts were already well established: (1) The performance of large-sized mills can be accurately predicted from the performance of rod mills 5 or 6 ft in diameter. Wet grinding mills as large as 14 ft in diameter (inside shell) by 20 ft long with rods 19.5 ft long can operate satisfactorily.

NFILTRATION is a term used to designate that i- process by which the pores of a metal powder are filled with a relatively low-melting liquid metal through the action of capillary forces. This is accomplished in practice either by heating the porous body in contact with the solid infiltrant metal above the melting point of the latter, or by preheating the porous body separately and then dipping it into the liquid metal. The liquid, as it sweeps through the porous body, replaces the gases progressively, thus yielding a relatively dense product in a short time.' Liquid-phase sintering, which is related to infiltration, is a process by which a mixture of two or more metal powders is sintered at a temperature between the liquidus and solidus of the ultimate alloy.' According to Cannon" liquid-phase sintering can be divided into three stages which he calls liquid flow, accommodation, and solid sintering. The largest density increase occurs during the first stage, where the lower melting component melts and, driven by capillary forces, flows among the particles of the higher melting component, where, after dissolution of the bonds between the solid particles, it moves them into close packing. This happens so quickly that little has yet been learned of its mechanism. A study of the rate of capillary rise of a liquid metal in a higher melting metal-powder compact may be expected, therefore, to contribute not only to a firmer understanding of the process of infiltration as such but also to a more extensive knowledge of what occurs during the initial stage of liquid-phase sintering. Theoretical Basis In order to derive a mathematical expression of the rate of infiltration, it has been assumed that a powder compact consists of a great many parallel capillary tubes and that the rate of rise of a liquid in an average capillary channel represents the rise in the entire compact. For a straight capillary, assuming that Poiseuille's law obtains for the non-stationary state and that wetting is very rapid, Ligenza and Bernstein' have derived the following differential eauation of motion where h is the height of rise of the column of liquid at time t, R, is the radius and 1 the length of the capillary, t) and 7, the viscosities of liquid and air, respectively, p and p, the density of the liquid and air, respectively, y the liquid-gas surface tension, 0 the liquid-solid contact angle, and g the acceleration due to gravity. The term on the left of Equation [I] represents the rate of change of momentum of the contents of the capillary tube. On the right the terms represent, respectively, the forces due to a) surface tension, b) viscous resistance, c) gravity, and d) end-drag effect. Equation [I] is not amenable to explicit solution, but for a tube of sufficiently small radius, the rate of rise may be slow enough so that the rate of change of momentum and end-drag terms may be neglected. The validity of this simplification was established by Ligenza and Bernstein' by graphical differentiation of observed data obtained from organic liquids rising in glass tubes. A two-dimensional, three-phasereservoir simulator was programmed for a large memory digital computer. It was designed to provide a practical solution to describing the complex physical relation between the natural forces and the physical properties of a heterogeneous reservoir when subjected to a specific set of conditions. A reservoir study is briefly described to illustrate application of the model. A full volumetric account of three phases (oil, gas and water) is performed simultaneously throughout an integration net representing the reservoir. Absence of one or two of the phases is treated as a special case of the more general situation. Expansion (or contraction) of all phases, including rock expansion, is performed so that the pressure calculation is the general unsteady-state case. To account for the large variations of subsurface elevation encountered in some reseruoirs, and to allow for segregation of the various phases, a gravity head term is included in the basic drive potential. Appropriate fluid and rock properties are used in polynominal surface form (functions of pressure and/or depth) or they can be entered as space variables at each position of the integration net. An unsteady-state water influx calculation, based on the method of van Everdingen and Hurst, l was connected to the boundary of the matrix to simulate aquifers of various sizes. In addition to reservoir calculations, three-phase fluid flow from the producing depth to the wellhead, including provisions for gas lift, was incorporated in the simulator. A workover routine was also built which can automatically switch to a different set of production relations when a gas-oil ratio or water fraction reaches a limit; or it can shut-in the well if prescribed. INTRODUCTION This paper describes a reservoir engineering mathematical simulator used to represent the complex interaction of natural forces and physical properties of a reservoir during natural depletion or with various injection schemes. The simulator, which was programmed for a large memory digital computer, is a two-dimensional calculation which handles three mobile fluid phases simultaneously (oil, gas and water). Basic requisites for the method are individual well production and pressure data, hydrocarbon fluid properties, geological data (producing depth and net sand), capillary pressure data, relative permeability data and permeability and porosity information. Matching the past performance of a combination drive reservoir often has yielded information concerning continuity and the validity of basic data. Detailed predictions of future performance can be made for continuation of current depletion methods (natural depletion) as well as for various types of recovery by gas or water injection. Combination injection cases and pattern studies can also be performed. Workover programs, gas lift and different types of artificial lift programs have been investigated using a technique similar to that described by Kern and Nicholson2 except that conditions of pressure and saturation at the block within which the well is located are used rather than average reservoir conditions. Drilling additional wells to optimize profit was explored, both as to number and location, by placing wells at different spots within the reservoir matrix. Special depletion processes can be examined, such as upstructure drainage and lateral (or strike) waterfloods in thin oil columns. In one case the mathematics of the simulator were modified to calculate the displacement in the vertical plane rather than in the horizontal plane. In this manner specific reservoir problems can be studied, such as coning of gas and/or water around production points, fingering along permeable stringers or, more generally, frontal advances in a heterogeneous section.

Practical experience has shown that at elevated temperatures solutions containing sodium hydroxide may attack stressed steel in a manner that cannot be explained in terms of ordinary corrosion. Because the ductility of the metal has been greatly reduced during the reaction, the entire phenomenon is usually called "embrittlement." Thus, after several years of operation caustic evaporators have been so badly embrittled that rivets could be cracked off with the blow of a hammer. Since fine intergranular cracks are almost always present in the zone of fracture, it has often been assumed that a process of selective corrosion in grain boundaries was responsible for the failure, although this has not been clearly proved experimentally. Concentrations of sodium hydroxide below those necessary for the uniform, rapid attack of the steel surface are reported to be most effective in producing embrittlement2, 3. In the operation of steam boilers a similar type of failure has been found, mainly in riveted seams or other capillary spaces where the solution may concentrate and where high stresses may also exist. It is believed that in such localized areas the dissolved solids may reach a value many times the few hundred parts per million prevalent in the body of the boiler. While this type of boiler failure has been the subject of investigation for a period of 20 years1, an understanding of its mechanism and a rational basis for complete protection have not yet been secured. The Pachuca silver district, situated about 100 kilometers northeast of Mexico City (Fig. l), covers roughly the southeastern half of the Sierra de Pachuca. This paper reviews recent developments in the application of classification practice to the origination of fine-grinding flow sheets and traces the history of the mechanical classifier from its initial application for separating cyanide process sands and slimes down to its present six or more distinctly different applications at copper concentrators; it undertakes to show also, by reference to diagrammatic fine-grinding flow sheets and accompanying operating data from nine copper concentrators in western North America, the advantages gained from improved classi-ficiation flow sheets at these properties in terms of reduced grinding costs, improved flexibility of operation or increased recovery. Comparison is only made between different fine-grinding flow sheets at a given plant and no attempt is made to compare different concentrators, on account of ore variations and differences in metallurgical objectives sought,. The adoption of the flotation process in recent years, and especially the development of selective flotation, has brought a demand for much finer grinding than formerly. This has caused much thought to be given to grinding efficiency, and today there is hardly a mill where the grinding flow sheet is not under close study and subject to frequent changes. When closed-circuit grinding was introduced into metallurgy some years ago, its value was recognized at once, and since then the combination of mills and classifiers has been regarded and operated as a grinding unit. Apart from variations in both the grinding and classifying elements of this unit, there have been many variations in grouping tried by different mills to suit varying conditions of ore and plant limitations. Although operators feel that in most cases their present flow sheets are on trial, and the data on present work are often incomplete, we have felt that a discussion of the progress that has been made and an endeavor to show present trends and their results should be of use to the profession. We have therefore prepared flow sheets of some of the larger mills with which we have been in contact and present them with available data as to their results, in the hope that they may be of service now rather than later when practice may have become more standardized and more complete records and analyses have been made. P. L. Pratt (University of Birmingham, Birmingham, England)—The author has measured the hardening effect of isolated edge and screw dislocation boundaries in a remarkably elegant manner, and he proposes that the detailed structure of the boundary determines its effectiveness as a barrier to slip although "there are still unknown details of the distribution which may be extremely important." On p. 678 the author states "that for a good crystal (one having a yield of about 30 psi) a change in annealing temperature from 300" to 400 °C resulted in a negligible shift in the level of the stress-strain curve." Is this in agreement with the results of the earlier paper by Li, Washburn, and Parker8 in which such a change of temperature produced notable hardening in crystals with a yield of about 30 psi? Or were these earlier crystals, of the same nominal purity, less perfect than those used in this work? The experiment illustrated in Fig. 15, p. 681, shows that the boundary has sharpened after annealing at 400 °C, the temperature at which the hardening effect first becomes apparent. Did the author verify that no sharpening of the boundary occurred at, say, 300 °C where no hardening was found? This would seem to be an important check on the proposed mechanism, especially since zinc of this purity should polygonize at temperatures well below 400 °C within the annealing times used here. There seem to be at least two alternative explanations which could fit these facts: 1—The boundary may sharpen at 300 °C or even lower temperatures but be unable to contribute greatly to the hardening until jogged by thermal vacancies and other impurity atoms after 400 °C anneal. This mechan- ism, discussed in the earlier paper,' is believed to account for the thermal hardening observed by Blank'" in NaCl, as stated elsewhere: and by results from recent experiments which tend to confirm this view. 2—The dislocations in the diffuse boundary may be locked by impurity atoms at 300 °C and thus only sharpen the boundary at 400 °C with the aid of thermal vacancies. In this case it would be difficult to distinguish between the two sources of hardening (sharpening or jogging), using metal of this purity. Jack Washburn (author's reply)—The author wishes to thank Dr. Pratt for his discussion. In connection with his first comment, it should be pointed out that the temperature of testing in the present series of experiments was —196°C, whereas, in the earlier experiments he referred to,' it was 20°C. Therefore, the yield values should not be directly compared. It is likely that the crystals used in the present work were initially more perfect macroscopically than the large shear specimens used previously. The small size of the test section in the kink specimens made it possible to select regions of the large crystals, from which they were acid-cut, that were free of observable small angle boundaries. The sharpening of a microscopically diffuse boundary such as that in Fig. 15 begins in zinc of this purity well below 300°C. However, it is probably not justified to conclude that because a boundary looks sharp under the microscope it has attained the ideal structure. The author agrees with Dr. Pratt that jogging of dislocation lines is one of the structural features of a small angle boundary that should be important in determining its strengthening effect. EL Salvador mine of Andes Copper Mining Co., E subsidiary of Anaconda Co., is in northern Chile about 18 miles north of Potrerillos, 7825 ft above sea level. Initial production is planned for the first half of 1959. Plant capacity will be 30,000 tpd, and there are 308,835,000 tons of proven ore reserves, averaging 1.49 pct Cu. The Inca adit is being driven as part of the mine-to-mill haulageway. Because of the overburden it is planned to mine the deposit by block caving. Ore will be dropped from upper gathering levels through ore passes to the Inca adit, through which it will be transported out of the mine to the primary crushing plant located a half mile from the portal.

HOTCHKISS, * Madison, Wis.-It was fortunate, in a way, that this subject of income taxation came up during the war when the government could appeal, on the basis of patriotism, to men of large, business experience to undertake the work of formulating this matter and practically donate their services. At any other time the government would have been unable to secure the necessary number of men of like ability. There is one thing that must not be forgotten. In all cases, except the very largest and most important, the application of this income tax law to a mine is going to be made by clerks whose salaries are fixed by a Congress that appropriated a half billion of dollars for a war purpose and provided that $4000 should be the highest salary paid in the adminis-tration of that great sum. The Congress of the United States unfor-tunately seems almost entirely unaware of the fact that men of ability and experience are worth money and must be paid adequately if proper public service is to be secured. While the formulation of the broad plans for administering the law have been in the hands of. men of unusual ability, we have the future to guard, and, if possible, the mining industry should see to it that the Internal Revenue Department is permitted by Congress to pay salaries that will enable it to secure men of the ability and experience necessary to insure proper consideration of the industry. Another fact to which I would call attention is the difference between the business and the economic, or economists', points of view as to what a mine is. The economists have properly, from their point of view, classed a mine as a wasting asset, but the average metal mine is not a wasting asset if it is a real mine. The economists are correct in a broad sense in that every ton of ore taken out diminishes the orebody by that amount. When it comes to the consideration of an individual mine from the business standpoint, the future of that mine rests on unfore-seeable events-the discovery of new orebodies or the development of old bodies beyond the point of probable expectations. Every going mine must develop new ore each year to replace that extracted, and, .during all but the last one or two years of its activity, actually does so. Instead of being a "wasting asset" such a mine, from the practical stand-point which must control valuation, is an "increasing asset." From

The susceptibility of quenched and aged Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb alloy to embritt2ement during irradiation has been examined for a number of solution temperatures and aging times. Material quenched from temperatures approximately 40°C below the transus has high tensile ductility, and this ductility is insensitive to aging at 500°C or to irradiation. If, however, the material is quenched from temperatures above the transus it becomes highly susceptible to loss of ductility either from aging at 500 or from irradiation. Inter granular failure is characteristic of the materials having low ductility. The distribution of the equilibrium phase is found to control the susceptibility to embrittlement by restricting 6 grain growth during heat treatment and thus influencing crack propagation. IN zirconium, as in titanium, -stabilizing alloy additions are used to obtain high strengths via quench and age heat treatments, and the Zr-2.5 pct Nb alloy has been developed1 because of its strength advantage over the Zircaloys. Early in the development of the Zr-2.5 pct Nb alloy the problem of 13 embrittlement was appreciated, and for this reason the solution temperature was chosen below the p transus.' In the course of irradiation studies on quenched and aged Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb alloy it was found' that irradiation introduced an important aspect of p embrittlement, riz., material quenched from the phase and aged 24 hr at 500°C was severely embrittled by moderate doses of neutron irradiation. This effect had not been studied in titanium alloys. In titanium the metallurgical features leading to 0 ernbrittlement were found to be structures with: a) coarse a platelets at the grain bondaries, b) finely dispersed a uniformly distributed throughout the (0) matrix,6 c) Widmanstatten a-13 with more than 50 pct P, d) the presence of some metastable p transformation products,3 and e) large prior -phase grain size.5 Alternatively, the presence of a uniform distribution of coarse a was conducive to high ductility and a structure largely of equiaxed a was very dctile. The detailed mechanisms of the embrittlement have not been worked out for all of these conditions, although weakness at either a-matrix boundaries or prior p grain boundaries have been prominent in the eculation. It was proposed that acicular a might act as a mild notch, and low ductility has been associated with easy fracture along its boundary.' There have been two opposing suggestions for the source of the high ductility associated with equiaxed a phase. JaffeeB proposed that this a would accept a large por- tion of the oxygen, thus increasing the ductility of the matrix, whereas after study of a Zr-Nb-Cu alloy Weinstein and oltz proposed that the a phase, softer than the martensitic matrix, acted to blunt cracks formed in the matrix. In the present work we have studied the effect of neutron irradiation on the ductility, particularly the P embrittlement, of the Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb alloy. By a variation of solution temperature and aging time a variety of metallurgical conditions have been examined, and a range of resultant ductilities obtained. The ductility has been related to the material microstructure and mode of fracture. EXPERIMENTAL The alloy used in the present work came from two separate ingots fabricated into rod of 3/8 or i in. diam, Table I. For both batches the P transus temperature was approximately 890° C. Most of the heat treatments were done directly on lengths of the j} in. diam rod, after which the tensile test specimens were machined. Quenching was achieved by dropping rods from a dynamic vacuum into water, the cooling rate estimated to be 2 100°C per sec. For aging the rods were encapsulated in evacuated silica tubes. Round tensile test specimens, with gage diam and length 0.160 and 1.0 in., respectively, were used throughout and pulled at room temperature or 300°C on Instron tensile machines, at a crosshead speed of 0.05 ipm. Specimens were irradiated in the NRX and NRU reactors, in facilities described in previous publications.'0 The metallurgical conditions examined have been: All tensile test specimens were machined with axes in the axial direction of the swaged rod. Although the specimen had a degree of preferred crystallo-graphic orientation with basal plane normals both parallel with and perpendicular to the tensile axis, the material was comparatively isotropic."
