The study of the mechanical properties of geologic materials was initiated in the Mining Research Section of the Fuels and Mining Practice Division in 1951 as part of a fundamental study of ground stress in Canadian coal mines.1 Early in the investigation of the mechanical properties of geologic materials, however, it was realized that the test results are influenced by the rate and the duration of loading. For this reason, laboratory investigations2,3 were undertaken to study the effect of long-period uniaxial stress on the deformation and failure properties of these materials. A literature survey indicated that work on the time-dependent properties of geologic materials had been very limited in the past.

AN equipment manufacturer swallows a bitter pill when he sees his machinery improperly in- stalled and not used to the full potential. This frequently happens with vibrating screens. Screens can be classified according to the path of vibration imparted to the screen surface. On this basis there are: 1) vertical circle or modified circle throw, 2) horizontal circle or modified circle throw, 3) vertical linear reciprocation, 4) tilted linear reciprocation, and 5) horizontal linear reciprocation. The most versatile vibration for medium to coarse sizing is generally conceded to be the vertical circle produced by an eccentric or unbalanced shaft, but other types of vibration may be more suitable for certain screening operations, particularly in the finer sizes.

A good tire program must begin at the top; management must have an awareness of the tremendous potential for cost saving that tires represent. At Reserve Mining Co., tires account for 33% of the cost of maintaining its 44 tractor-trailer side-dump haulers and 22% of its 32 rear-dump trucks. In comparison, engine overhauls account for only 6% of the maintenance dollar. Doubling the present engine life would save only 3%. The open-pit mine, located near Babbitt, Minn., moves about 46 million t/y with its off highway fleet. Mine roadways total in excess of 160 km (100 miles) and about 1200 tires are in active use at any given time.

AT the seventeenth National Metal Congress, held at Chicago, Oct. 1-3, the Iron and Steel Division and Institute of Metals Division participated with the American Society for Metals, American Welding Society, and the Wire Association in one of the most successful meetings ever held. The total attendance at the technical sessions and the scope of and interest shown in the exhibits at the Exposition were greater than at any of the "Metal Weeks" since the depression began. The Iron and Steel Division held two all-day symposia and one general session. The latter, at the International Amphitheatre, Wednesday afternoon, was the only one poorly attended. This was attributable, at least partly, to the location of the meeting roan.

The Mission unit of the American Smelting and Refining Co., located 20 miles south of Tucson, Ariz., is a high-volume, 15,000 tpd operation which utilizes a relatively light equipment fleet. As such, management is very conscious of the mechanical and operational availability of the equipment in use. One of the key items in attaining this efficiency is a complete and reliable record of mechanical and operational machine availability which is an invaluable guide for: 1) Estimating future equipment and personnel requirements of an operating property. 2) Planning an expansion program of an operating property. 3) Estimating equipment and personnel requirements of a new property. 4) Selection of replacement equipment. 5) Comparison of separate operating properties.

Eagle Mountain mine of Kaiser Steel Corp. began production in 1947 when the direct shipping ore contained 51-56% Fe. The high grade, wide ore face and low stripping ratio ores were rapidly depleted and Eagle Mountain required processing plants for upgrading and more efficient mining equipment. During 1970-71 total annual pit tonnage averaged 56 million tons of material ranking the Eagle Mountain Mine as the fourth largest in the country. Ore production averaged 12.5 million tons requiring a stripping ratio of 3.5: 1. During this period mining activities were scheduled for a three-shift, seven-day operation. The present mining rate is about 30 million tpy on a two-shift, five-day schedule.

EXPANSION initiated during and after the war has placed industrial plants in new areas and increased reduction and manufacturing facilities in communities already established. With added expansion interest has grown in possible area contamination from waste products. Evolved flue waste contains many chemical contaminants that may or may not cause concern; however, atmospheric pollution has always been a problem to industrial communities. For some time effects attributed to small quantities of compounds of fluorine in various waste gases have been studied by industrial, medical, agricultural, and associated interests.1,2 Aside from an article by Churchill, Rowley, and Martin in 1948,3 little has been published on the subject of fluorine in coal except by foreign investigators.

The Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration has called attention to the increasing frequency of accidents occurring during mine maintenance and repair tasks in a recent publication. Data from the agency's Health and Safety Analysis Center have been compiled and presented in a report titled "Analysis of Injuries Associated with Maintenance and Repair in Metal and Nonmetal Mines,"* a booklet aimed at answering four questions: (1) Which pieces of operating equipment are most frequently involved in maintenance accidents; (2) Which maintenance functions are the most hazardous; (3) Which tools are most often associated with injuries; and (4) What is the comparative hazard of welding or flame cutting vs. mechanical or electrical maintenance functions.

After shotcrete had been in use for a short time al the Climax Mine of the Climax Molybdenum Co., Climax, Colo., it was noted that regular longhole undercutting blasts would severely damage or detach slusher drift shotcrete linings. If this were to be a usual occurrence, the widespread application of shotcrete would have to be reexamined or abandoned. Concrete drift linings are affected less by blasting because of occasional significant gaps between the placed concrete and rock and the greater thickness of poured-in-place linings. Research Project Organized A research project was organized to determine: 1) the seriousness of the problem, 2) more complete in-use shotcrete strength data, and 3) possible solutions.

Minas de Matahambre, a copper mine located 100 miles southwest of Havana, Cuba, has produced 10 million tons of copper ore since it was first opened up in 1913. During the mid-1950's the mine was producing approximately 1000 tpd and had attained a depth of 3600 ft. As shown in Fig. 1, the property contains three shafts: the No. 1 shaft, 2100 ft deep and located 2000 ft south of the No. 2 shaft, provided service to the 2100 level; the vertical 3600-ft No. 2 shaft handled all production to the 3400 level; the No. 3 shaft on the northeasterly fringe of the mining area was in a semi-active status.

On account of the possibility of isolating carbides in steel it is generally assumed that the electrode potential of iron carbide is more noble than that of ferrite.1,2,3,4,5 Differences from 0.032 V1 to 0.4 V4 have been recorded. However, it is important to realize that the more noble behavior of cementite in relation to ferrite is not an issue of thermodynamics but of reaction kinetics. INTRODUCTION The importance of determining dips of subsurface formations in wells, especially in wildcat wells, is self-evident and need not be enlarged upon. Various dipmeter instruments have been described in technical literature1,2,3,4 over the years. The introduction of the continuous dip-meters3,4 has made the earlier types obsolete. Continuous dipmeter logs are run by at least two different major service companies. Included as part of the service are a limited number of dip calculations—usually 10—made at different levels from the log. Very frequently this is the total result of a dip survey. It is believed that dipmeter surveys would be of considerably more advantage if geologists and engineers were able to make their own calculations from the original records. Determination of dips from the dipmeter record starts with the correlation of three log curves taken at different sides of the borehole. It cannot be over-emphasized that the quality of the results hinges primarily on this correlation. Nobody should be better qualified to correlate logs than a subsurface geologist or field engineer. The next requirement is to have an easy yet accurate way of computing the dip from the correlated points. Service companies use a mechanical device for this purpose. Directions for a graphical method were given in a recent article by B. 0. Prescotts. This paper describes a different graphical technique which, in our experience, is simpler, faster and at least as accurate. The entire manipulation is carried out on the stereonet in a number of easy moves. The paper is divided into two parts. This first part contains the introductory sections and full explanation of the geometry involved. The second part reviews the reading of data from an actual field log and summarizes the practical rules for computation of dips, the whole process being illustrated by an example. Following the outlined procedure, one could calculate a good many levels in a relatively short time, thus being able in particular to check suspected anomalies such as fault zones or unconformities in as close detail as the log will permit. GENERAL EXPOSITION OF THE METHOD Prnciple of the Dipmeter The position of a plane in space is defined by the location of three points, not on a straight line. Referring to Fig. I, if a borehole traverses a bedding plane, we can determine the strike and dip of the bed by finding three points which are not in line along this plane. Such points as A, B, and C are obtained with the dipmeter. The device consists of three electrodes (or caliper arms)1, 2, and 3 spaced at 120 angles, as schematically indicated, whose readings are separately recorded (Curves 1, 11, 111, to the right). When electrode 1 passes the boundary of the bed, Curve I will kick, etc. From these curves, we know the relative distances of points A, B, C, measured along the axis of the hole. Most ingots complete solidification vertically rather than transversely. This conclusion is based on complete solidification patterns of big-end-up and big-end-down ingots developed from dumped and split ingots. New mechanisms for segregation in ingots are proposed. Internal soundness in ingots is found to depend upon adequate width of vertical core. A LTHOUGH it has long been recognized that the A internal soundness of ingots is principally been recognizedthatthedependent on the process of solidification, knowledge of this process is still only fragmentary. The mechanisms causing the several types of segregation in ingots, which mechanisms are necessarily related to the solidification process, are not well understood. In absence of a better conception of the solidification process, it seems hardly surprising that mold design varies widely. Guiding principles for mold design are needed. At stake in the improvement of ingot quality are not only improved properties of steel but also appreciably higher yields of sound steel, which would considerably decrease manufacturing costs. In the present study, following a general description of the several types of segregation in ingots, Fig. 1, complete solidification patterns of a big-endup and a big-end-down ingot, including the zones of accelerated solidification, have been reconstructed. In both ingots, a core of vertical solidification extends from the base cone to the hot-top junction. Based on the finding that ingots complete solidification vertically rather than transversely, as has been previously assumed, new mechanisms for segregation in ingots are proposed. Internal soundness in ingots is found to depend upon the width of the vertical core, which in turn depends principally upon the width to height (w/h) ratio of the ingot. Solidification patterns of ingots are of three general types: 1—those in which vertical solidification does not reach the top, 2—those in which vertical solidification just reaches the top of the ingot, and 3—those in which vertical solidification reaches the top some time before transverse solidification would reach the middle of the ingot, so that a vertical core of definite width at the top of the ingot is developed. Axial defects vary characteristically with the solidification pattern. Examples of ingots of each type are presented. Dumped ingot data reported by Nelson' have been used in developing families of curves of transverse and vertical solidification, and in deriving the effect of the w/h ratio upon the solidification pattern. Photographs of many ingots split at Homestead and at Duquesne Works, United States Steel CO., as well as those published by the British Iron and Steel Institute,' have been studied and analyzed. In the interest of brevity, only typical ingots of each type or classification from the above sources have been reproduced. Segregation in Ingots Segregation in ingots falls into three principal classifications: 1—lamellar segregation, as revealed in sulphur prints (Figs. 2 and 3); 2—zone segregation, or broad variations in composition; and 3— interdendritic, or microsegregation. The last class, of minor importance, is not considered here. It is generally recognized that non-metallic inclusions in steel come from two principal sources. First are the chemical reactions in the furnace, or in subsequent deoxidation, resulting in slag which does not free itself from the metal. Much information has been published concerning these chemical reactions and their control through proper attention to slag viscosity, composition of deoxidizers, and other qualities. The studies of this subject by C. H. Herty, Jr. and others through the medium of physical chemistry have yielded much information for the steelmaker. The second source is erosion of ladle refractories, such as lining brick, stoppers, nozzles and runners, causing entrapped particles of globules of fluxed silicate material. In contrast with the large amount of information available on the first source, relatively little has been published on the subject of erosion which, in the case of basic electric melted steel, is the principal source of nonmetallics. This is probably due to the fact that the problem was assumed to be one of simple mechanical erosion, which could be solved primarily by modification of ladle practices. Good improvements have been made by elimination of slurries in the ladle, better ladle and runner refractories, and more attention to pouring temperatures. It is doubtful, however, that this problem has been recognized in its true light since it is not one of simple mechanical erosion but rather one of chemical reaction between the metal and the refractories; and in this sense is as much a problem of physical chemistry as the reactions involved in the actual steelmaking process. The influence of ladle refractories on the resulting cleanness of steels was early recognized by A. McCancel who examined large inclusions in steels made by both acid and basic practices. His chemical analyses showed the large influence exerted by the manganese content of the steel on erosion of the ladle and nozzles used in those days. The presence of MnO in such inclusions led McCance to the hypothesis that both basic and acid steels react chemically with the ladle refractories so that small globules of fluxed refractories are carried in the stream into the molds. This early work of McCance was checked by one of the present authors on basic electric bearing-steel, and it was found that on steels containing as low as 0.40 pct manganese the fluxed surface of the ladle lining after delivering such a heat showed as high as 25 pct MnO by actual analysis. Furthermore, by lowering the manganese content of the steel to 0.20 pct, ladle erosion was decreased with a corresponding decrease in silicate inclusions in the steel. Limitations placed on the manganese content for the required inherent properties made it impossible to pursue this line further, and subsequent attention was concentrated on improved ladle refractories, care in keeping the ladle clean and free from loose refractories up to the time of tapping, and pouring the steel at optimum temperature. Our study of the chemical reactions at the metal-brick interface between steel and ladle refractories was revived in 1939 as a result of an experimental observation made on the cleanness of alloy steels of the SAE types. This observation showed that the relative cleanness of such steels made in basic electric arc furnaces of 12 ton capacity and poured in ingots ranging from 1100 to 2200 lb weight was determined to a large extent by the ratio of the manganese and silicon contents, provided other steelmaking variables such as tapping temperature, pouring temperature, pouring time, amount of aluminum added for grain size control, and degree of deoxidation in the furnace were kept reasonably constant. Detailed studies made on the deoxidation and slag practice during the refining period of basic electric furnace practice showed that these two variables exerted some influence on the resulting cleanness of steel in the form of bars and forgings. The important variable, the manganese-silicon balance, was not apparent until heats were made in succession by the best furnace practice kept under fairly rigid metallurgical control. Another observation pertinent to this work concerned the similarity in the microscope of slag particles causing magnaflux or step-down indications in subsequent rolled bars, and the patches of slag frequently seen on the surface of ingots. These patches are generally believed to come from the glassy metal-brick interface in the ladle and represent an entrapment of such glass (both from the ladle brick and nozzle) in the metal as it flows over the refractories in the neighborhood of the nozzle. These glassy particles are carried down into the mold with the liquid steel, and gradually coalesce into a slag "button" which floats on the surface of the steel as it rises in the molds. Periodically the button is washed to the side of the ingot where it is trapped between the surface of the ingot and the mold, later appearing as a slag patch on the surface of the ingot after stripping. Even though most of the small glassy particles coalesce into a slag button while the ingot is being poured, it is logical to suspect this step in the steelmaking process as being a source of slag lines large enough to cause trouble

The phase and volumetric properties of 10 very volatile mixtures are presented for temperatures from — 200°F to above the critical points. These mixtures consisted of natural gases and of mixtures of natural gases with methane and nitrogen. Existing correlations of compressibility factors have been extended to apply to these mixtures. Existing correlations of critical pressures and temperatures do not apply to these mixtures. Methods have been developed for estimating critical temperatures of these mixtures to ± 4°F and critical pressures to 2 5 per cent. These methods apply to other volatile and very volatile mixtures. The results of this work are particularly applicable to the separation of nitrogen from hydrocarbons by low-temperature distillation. INTRODUCTION Knowledge of the low-temperature phase and volumetric properties of natural gases and of other mixtures of the light hydrocarbons is becoming increasingly important as interest in low-temperature separation processes increases. Low-temperature distillation has been used to separate ethane and ethylene from natural gas and from refinery gases for petrochemical uses. Removal of nitrogen from natural gas by low-temperature distillation has been proposed 7,20 as a means of increasing the capacity of existing gas transmission lines and of improving the marketability of the gas. Further application of low-temperature separation processes has been retarded by lack of data on the phase and volumetric behavior of mixtures at low-temperatures and at high pressures. This paper presents the results of determination of the phase and volumetric properties of 10 very volatile mixtures at temperatures from - 200 °F to above the critical point. These mixtures consisted of natural gases with methane and nitrogen. Generalized methods are presented for estimating the critical temperatures, critical pressures, and the densities of such mixtures. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURES The apparatus and the experimental procedures have been described in an earlier paper13. The method consists of displacing the mixture from a reservoir which is maintained at constant temperature and pressure into an agitated glass equilibrium cell which is maintained at constant temperature. The liquid level within the glass equilibrium cell was visually observed, and the pressure was measured to within & 3 psi with a calibrated Bourdon gage. COMPOSITIONS OF MIXTURES STUDIED The compositions of the mixtures studied are summarized in Table 1. The measured properties included in Table 1 will be discussed later in this paper. The sources of these gases are described below: Gas "A-1'' was obtained from the Phillips Petroleum Co. Its composition was reported in connection with earlier work." The properties of this gas were reported in an earlier paper.13 Gases "A-2, A-3, A-4" were prepared by mixing nitrogen with gas "A-1." Gas "AB-1" was prepared by mixing methane with gas "A-1." The properties of this gas were reported in an earlier paper.'" Gases "AB-2" and "AB-3" were prepared by mixing nitrogen with gas "AB-1." Gas "B" was obtained by W. W. Bodle of J, F. Pritchard & Co. from the primary separator of a well in western Kansas. Gas "C" was obtained from a Cities Service Co. pipeline at Lawrence, Kans. Gas "D" was prepared by mixing gas "AB" with gas "C."

The custom milling plant of the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. is at Sahuarita, Arizona, approximately 20 miles south of Tucson. It is connected by a 2-mile railroad spur to the main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad between Tucson and Nogales. The capacity of the plant is 500 tons per day. The mill is conventional except perhaps in the rather wide variety of ores treated. These vary from straight copper ores, from which only one concentrate is produced, and lead-zinc or copper-zinc ores from which two concentrates are produced, to complex gold-silver-copper-lead-zinc ores, which require the simultaneous production of three or lour concentrates. Custom ores are received in lots varying in size from a few truckloads to several carloads. Similar ores, after crushing and sampling, may be commingled, or individual lots may be milled individually. The ores are first dumped either into one of two 200-ton railroad bins, or into one of the two 75-ton truck bins. From these bins the lot of ore is individually crushed in a 24 by 16-in. jaw crusher to 3-in. size, and then to ½-in. size in a 3-ft Symons shorthead crusher. After crushing to ½-in., the ore is conveyed to the automatic sampling plant. This consists of three Vezin samplers in series, each successively cutting out 10 pct, 10 pct and 5 pct of its feed. After No. I sampler, the material passes through a mixing barrel and is then crushed to -in. in a set of rolls before passing to No. 2 sampler. Between No. 2 and No. 3 samplers, the ore is again mixed in a mixing barrel. The final sample, consisting of one pound per ton of ore, is taken to the laboratory, where it is further crushed to 1/8-in. in a coffeemill, and then riffled down to the size required for grinding in a pulverizer. The capacity of the crushing and sampling plant is up to 100 tons per hour, depending upon the character of the ore. After sampling, the ore is stored in five ore-storage bins, consisting of four 200-ton bins and one 175-ton bin. Each of these bins is discharged by means of belt feeders and conveyor to the ball mills, so that ores may be composited for milling in any required ratio, or milled separately by themselves. Fine grinding is done in one 6 by 4-ft Allis-Chalmers ball mill and one 8-ft by 36-in. Hardinge mill. These two mills both discharge to one 54-in. Akins Simplex High weir classifier. The classifier sands can be returned to either or both mills, so that flexibility in grinding for different ores is easily obtained. Flotation equipment consists of four 66-in. Fagergren machines for copper-lead roughing and six similar machines for zinc roughing. Lead-copper bulk concentrate is cleaned and recleaned in eight No. 18-S Denver machines, and zinc concentrate is cleaned in three 66-in. Fager-grens. Copper-lead differential separation

The use: of a pilot waterflood is very desirable where all of the pertinent data necessary to initiate a full scale waterflood are not. available. This paper attempts to take a specific case and .show the step by step process of starting with a pilot waterflood and progressing to a full wale flood as results are obtained. INTRODUCTION Many of the older fields of Soutlwest Texas are approaching depletion by primary produrtion methods. As primary protlllc:inp operations on individual properties approach their economic limit. conflicting considerations face management: cm the one hand. plugging and abandonment of wells for equipment salvage; on the other hand, further investment in secondary recovery installtions, equilent, and well workovers in the interests of conservation anal additional oil reserves. In main instances, where primary production by pressure depletion and gas solution drive has been comparatively good, there still exists the possibility of an economic secondary recovery by waterflood. This is not necessarily true to the same degrre of all such fields. nor all portions of large fields. To properly evaluate the economics of a prospective water-11ot1cI requires a considerable amount of precise geological. statitical. and physical data Such information on the older field.; is often very limited. and in the case of the property discussed in this paper was considered inadequate to justify investment in an overall waterflood. Primary production was estimated at :39 per cent of the original oil in place, yet sand conditions of permeability and homogeneity, and position in the field appeared to be favorable for a limited margin of profit from a carefully controlled waterflood. Thus a pilot waterflood, with its minimum initial financial risk, followed by extension as favorable results were obtained, seemed to be the answer for the Sun Oil Co L. Wiederkehr lease in the Nortl Government Wells Field, Duval County. Texas DESCRIPTION OF RESERVOIR Approxinately 8,200 wells have been drilled in Duval County. As of March 1, 1952, there were 3,350 producing oil wells in 92 different fields, with very few flowing wells (Fig. 1.) Sun Oil Co. operates the I.. Wiederkehr lease located in the North Government Wells Field in Duval Countv. 85 mile. west of Corpus Chriti and 100 miles south of San Antonio. The lease has been subjected in part to a controlled five spot waterflood. The North Government Wells Field is roughly 7 miles long and 3 miles wide, with numerous overlapping producing zones. The L. Wiederkehr lease of 3.085 acres. Has seven producing zones from 700 to 7.500 ft. The lease is in the northern section of the field where it is widest, and has 710 acres productive from the North Government Wells .and. (Fig. 2.) The North Government Wells sand, Jackson group. Eocene age, at an average depth of 2.250 ft (minus 1.750 subsea). has a thickness range of 25 ft on the east side of the L. Wiederkehr lease to 4 ft on the west side. It has a slight overall dip to the North and East of some 33 ft to the mile.

In recent print, some remarkably contradictory statements have appeared regarding the importance to be attached to sponge Iron,1-6 a metallurgical commodity whose history goes back at least to the time of Diodorus Siculus in the fourth century B.C. This disagreement, however, expresses the lack of a satisfactory method for producing sponge iron rather than defection in the commodity. The blast furnace is admitted to have certain inherent disadvantages, such as a general unsuitability for magnetite and the heating and blowing of vast quantities of undesirable nitrogen, so that a workable sponge-iron process remains attractive. In this respect, low-temperature gaseous reduction shows especial promise; but confusion persists regarding the factors involved. The present paper, therefore, has three principal divisions: (I) an exhaustive examination of all previous work on low-temperature gaseous reduction, (2) experi- mentation on the reduction of a magnetite with hydrogen, and (3) development of certain thermodynamic relationships in reduction, with a summarized depiction of the factors in the general process. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Gaseous media used in the reduction processes under discussion can be classified in three types: (I) H2, (2) CO, and (3) other gases. In the second, the CO is often admixed with H2. The third principally comprises hydrogeniferous gases, such as natural gas and producer gas, and in addition includes chlorine. Because hydrogen therefore features in all three, a study of hydrogen reduction based on investigations using pure hydrogen alone may be incomplete. The present paper reviews the three groups of investigations in the listed order, paying particular attention to hydrogen reduction. For the benefit of future workers, an exhaustive bibliography has been prepared and similarly classified. Group I: Reduction with Hydrogen Equilibria Although the present problem is specifically one of kinetics, a first consideration is the equilibrium of the system, since the reactions to be studied comprise that equilibrium, and their direction and end points are defined by it. The historic development of these researches is interesting and informative.
