A study has been made of the decarburization of low-carbon sheet steels at temperatures from 1100" to 1475°F in mixtures containing hydrogen, nitrogen, water vapor, and in some instances carbon monoxide. Decarburization occurs principally by the reaction C (in steel) + H20 = CO + H2 and follows a first-order rate law. The decarburization rate appreciably increases with an increase in temperature up to about 1325°F, but the increase in rate is small with fur- Use of a dry hydrogen atmosphere results in a relatively slow decarburization of steel and use of a wet hydrogen atmosphere results in relatively rapid decarburization. It is now generally recognized' that the reaction C (in steel) + H2O = H2 + CO [l] accounts for most of the decarburization that occurs in wet hydrogen-containing atmospheres. The present article is concerned with the decarburization of low-carbon sheet steel in H2-N2 atmospheres ther increase in temperature. The limiting rate of decarburization can be predicted from a knowledge of the solid solubility and diffusivity of carbon and this rate is approached as the water-vapor content of an atmosphere is increased. Hydrogen contents above about 8 pct are beneficial only in that they permit higher levels of water vapor to be used without oxidation of the steel. A buildup of CO in the atmosphere lowers the rate of decarburization. containing various amounts of water vapor and carbon monoxide. The effectiveness of these atmospheres and the influence of temperature on decarburization rate will be considered. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The chemical compositions of the three steels used in decarburization-rate studies are listed in Table I. Steel A was a commercially hot-rolled rimmed steel that was cold-reduced at the Laboratory to furnish specimens 0.025, 0.041, and 0.059 in. thick. A COMPARISON of statistics relating to coal min-ing in Great Britain and the United States leads one to suspect widely differing conditions and practice. A brief review of some of the conditions may enable American mining men to appreciate more fully the difficulties with which British engineers are faced, and to some extent explain why American, coal can be sold f.o.b. mine at the present time at about 50 to 60 per cent of the cost of British coal at the mine, and why British man-shift outputs fall far below American at present being less than 30 per cent. Bulman gives the average depth of 6-ft. seams. in Britain at 1350 ft., and of 2-ft. seams at 517 ft. George S. Rice states that 90 per cent of American coal 'is taken from less than 600 ft. Much English coal is taken below 2000 ft. and some below 3000 ft. The total influence of depth on cost is not always evident. Room work as known in America becomes less advisable with increasing depth, as pillars crush badly if left -for any length of time. A limited amount of bord and pillar work, taking very small amounts of coal in the first working, takes the place of room work, with rapid working of the pillars as soon as the panels are broken. Ventilation difficulties increase tremendously with depth and thinning coal. In America the chief use of air underground is to dilute gas. In Britain it serves a dual purpose, in many cases the amount of air cir-culated being far in excess of the quantity necessary to dilute gas to reasonable proportions. At great .depths rock temperatures exceed-95 deg. F., and great volumes of air are necessary for rock cooling. At these high temperatures humidity becomes an important factor. At present a great deal of research is under way to find methods of overcoming the troubles experienced with high temperature and humidity in deep mines.

This is the thirteenth paper of a series from the laboratories of the Aluminurrl Company of America presenting the results of investigations of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys prepared from electro-lytically refined aluminum. The ninth paper, on The Constitution of High-purity Aluminum-titanium Alloys,' presented a type of system that had not previously been encountered in aluminum alloys. Subsequent work has shown that there are several similar binary aluminum diagrams including that of aluminum and chromium. The present investigation was limited to the cxtreme alnminum end of the aluminum-chromium system. The first systematic investigation of the aluminum-chromium equilibrium diagram was carried out by Hindrichs.? The resulting equilibrium diagram with some imaginary additions suggested by Guillet3 is shown in Fig. 1. Recently Goto and D6gane4 investigated the constitution of aluminum alloys containing up to 32 per cent chromium, and presented the diagram that is reproduced in Fig. 2. Wide discrepancies in the two diagrams are evident. The need for a better understanding of the effect of fluid pressure on the strength of intact and jointed rock has long been recognized. The behavior of pore fluid pressure was first pointed out by Terzaghi 1 who suggested the application of the effective stress concept to rock and concrete. While the effective stress concept has been used for some time in the design of mass concrete dams, it only recently has been applied to rock. Robinson 2 and Handin et al.3 evaluated the effects of pore pressure on a variety of sedimentary rocks and demonstrated the validity of the concept. Work using pore fluids other than water has been done by Boozer, et al.4 who considered strain rate and temperature as additional variables. According to the effective stress theory, the effective stress, [a], is the difference between the total stress, [a], and the pore pressure, u, and is the controlling factor influencing frictional strength of rock, other parameters remaining constant. Assuming the Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria applies, the shear strength, T, is given by the equation [r=d+ (a-u)tan ¢](1) where [~F], the angle of internal friction, and c, the cohesion intercept of "no load" shear strength, are the effective stress parameters.* Robinson,2 Handin,3 and others have demonstrated that moderately porous sand-

A DISTINGUISHED engineer, the active head of a large mining company, has said that surveying attains the dignity of a profession only in the hands of a few men-the few who know how to keep notes that will be understood by even a novice without further word of explanation. Of all mine-records, survey notes are perhaps the most important. The maps made from them serve as a working-guide, and as framework for other data ; and when, from any cause, access to underground workings is shut off, the surveyor's record often becomes invaluable. So seldom does a surveyor have a chance to check underground surveys by making a closure, that he is compelled to rely on the precision of each step of his work for the accuracy of the final result. When data are fully recorded on the spot, the notes, even in the hands of second parties, become evidence of the care and precision with which the surveying was done. It is worth a great deal to be able to pick up the work of a former surveyor where it was left o$; and to be able to carry it forward without retracing from the beginning. The purpose of this paper is to describe the survey-note system of a mine now under my direction, in which underground surveys had to be relied upon entirely for the proper division of rich ore-bodies between neighbors, thereby placing a premium on accurate surveying and permanent records. In survey-work, it soon turns out that paper is the least item of expense, and that little is gained by trying to economize note-book space. For many purposes it is best to record notes on cards or loose-leaves, which may be left in the office at the end of the day's work, and need not be carried into the mine again, there to become smeared with grime and grease. IN the previous paper, the writer showed how, on the basis of thermodynamic reasoning, it seems probable that when true equilibrium conditions obtain, carbon exists as Fe3C in the liquid state and as elementary carbon in the solid state (7 Fe), in which case the solidus would be a straight line from 0.18 to 1.70 per cent. carbon (Fig. 1). In the same paper he concluded that the solidus obtained by Honda 'and his co-workers1 probably does not represent the same conditions, insuring a complete equilibrium. Except for a downward temperature displacement, the solidus obtained by Gutowsky,2 using the Heycock and Neville method, practically coincides with Honda's solidus as shown in Fig. 1. The writer at first thought that perhaps in some way Gutowsky's thermocouple was improperly calibrated for high-temperature measurements, as his liquidus was also much lower than those obtained by Carpenter and Keeling3 and by Ruer and Goerens.4 However, the eutectic temperature obtained by Gutowsky agrees with the generally accepted value of 1130° C., so that the validity of the inference regarding improper temperature calibrations is to be strongly doubted. The occurrence of the tellurides of gold and silver, even in small quantities, is so rare that their metallurgical treatment has engaged little attention. A residence of several months at one of the few mines in North America the product of which consists entirely of such ore, has led me to arrange a method for its economical treatment. The mine referred to is the Huronian, situated a few miles distant from Jackfish Lake, in Ontario, Canada. The plan proposed is for this peculiar case, and is put on record as possibly suggestive and helpful .in any similar instance, should it occur. Since freight-rates from the mine to the nearest railroad-point were extremely high, and for other economical reasons, the method proposed is modified by the use, as far as possible, of the machinery already at the mine, and is so arranged that bullion instead of concentrates would be obtained as a final product. The ore-vein at the Huronian mine varied in width from about 4 feet at the surface to 2 feet and less at the lowest level—125 feet —and dipped southeast about 88. The rock consisted, on both foot- and hanging-walls, of soft, green Huronian slates carrying much highly crystalline but barren pyrite. The ore carried an inconsiderable amount of galena with iron and copper pyrites, argentite, hessite, sylvanite (or petzite), and probably altaite, the telluride of lead. Near the surface the ore showed considerable native gold, but this disappeared with greater depth. Two complete analyses of minerals containing tellurium are here attached, as they establish the presence of two important compounds: I. The mill is a departure from gravity concentration and has gained a reputation for the low initial cost of erection, extreme simplicity and the low cost of milling on the refractory character of the ore which is treated. The structure is of heavy timbers with board walls and corrugated roofing. The floors are concrete and the general layout is of the ground floor only. All the machines are driven by individual motors and the transmission usually found in such a plant is entirely absent. (Fig. 2.) ORE The ore from the Galena mine is sheared Wallace quartzite replaced with quartz, siderite, pyrite, sphalerite, gray copper (tetrahedrite) and very fine-grained argentiferous galena. Much of the silver is undoubtedly associated with the gray copper, the amount, however, apparently varies with different localities in the vein. An average assay of the ore is 6.0 per cent. lead, 1.3 per cent. zinc, 0.3 per cent. copper, 17.5 per cent. iron and 4.5 oz. silver. The concentrates produced are of an average 53 per cent. lead, 40 oz. silver, 8 per cent. zinc and 11 per cent. iron, while the tailings are 0.5 per cent. lead, 0.4 oz. silver. With the present market for zinc no attempt is made to produce a zinc concentrate.

MEMBERS-QUALIFICATIONS AND ELECTION SEC. 1. The membership of the Institute shall comprise seven classes, namely: 1. Members; 2. Honorary Members; 3. Senior Members; 4. Associates; 5. Junior Members; 6. Rocky Mountain Members; 7. Junior Foreign Affiliates. All shall be equally entitled to the privileges of membership, excepting that no member of any class whose residence shall be outside of the United States of America, except those residing in Mexico and Canada, shall he entitled to vote. SEC. 2. Members: A person to be eligible for election or transfer into the class of Member must be at least 27 years of age and must have had at least six years' employment in the practice of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy, or chemistry, during at least three years of which be must have held positions of responsibility in one or more of these fields. This shall not apply to Rocky Mountain members. SEC. 3. Honorary Members: Each candidate for Honorary Membership must be recommended by at least ten Members and must be elected by ballot at a meeting of the Board of Directors by the unanimous vote of the Directors present; provided, however, that the number of Honorary Members shall at no time exceed twenty. Such election shall automatically act as a transfer of such member from any other class of membership to which be may belong.

Development of a process for winning copper from pelletized chalcocite concentrate is underway at the Bureau of Mines, Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center. The new route from concentrate to metal by which the Bureau seeks to eliminate matte smelting and converting includes a two-stage fluid bed treatment. In the first stage, pelletized concentrate containing 32%Cu and 7% S is first desulfurized to less than 1.0% S in an oxidizing atmosphere. In the second stage, the calcine is metallized by reduction with hydrogen. Thereafter, the reduced product plus 10% CaO is routed to a smelting furnace which separates metallic copper from the gangue. Recovery and Cu content at this point are in the 97-98% range. This product must be refined to remove sulfur and iron so the metal is suitable for making wirebar copper. An important feature of the process is fine concentrate pelletization prior to fluid-bed treatment. This permits a shorter reaction time, a decrease in dusting and easier subsequent processing. In a broad sense, sulfide copper pyrometallurgy is a batch sequence in three separate vessels, i.e., a reverberatory furnace to yield matte copper, a converter to produce blister copper and another reverberatory furnace to produce fire-refined copper. Matte-smelting has remained relatively unchanged since it became a universal practice some 50 to 60 years ago. It is now serving a wide range of smelter feed materials, but many concentrates are not immediately amenable to the process. There are abundant copper resources which lack sufficient sulfur and other elements lo sustain the full chemistry involved in matte-smelting. This necessitates adding sulfur to make the product fit the process, and usually none of the sulfur is recovered. From the standpoint of pollution alone, the development of a smelting technique for low-sulfur concentrates not requiring the addition of sulfur would be a significant gain.

The occurrence of minerals of nickel and cobalt at Mine La Motte is probably known to every mineralogist. I will not attempt to describe these minerals, but, before entering on my subject, will briefly mention the ores, etc., which call for metallurgical treatment and enter into the composition of our mattes. Our staple lead-ore, the dressed galena, is the chief source of nickel and cobalt. It carries but a small percentage of these metals, viz.: 0.2 to 0.3 percent. usually, though when much copper pyrites is contained in the gangue, the amount of nickel and cobalt may be as great as 1.0 to 1.5 per cent. Next in importance is the ((middle product" of the dressingworks, consisting of the sulphides of iron (and copper) with gangue and galena. This usually carries 20 to 23 per cent. of lead, 0.5 to 1.0 per cent. of copper and 2.5 to 3.5 per cent. of nickel and cobalt. A larger percentage of copper always carries with it an increase of nickel and cobalt. In some few cases 12 to 15 per cent. of copper gives 6.5 to 8.0 per cent of these metals. SOME information has been published on the sulphur dioxide concentration of gases from Dwight-Lloyd machines sintering lead ores but most of this relates to the customary practice in which the charge is relatively high in lead and is sintered in two passes over the machine. It is thought, therefore, that the following observations on sintering in one pass a low-lead, low-sulphur charge may be of interest. The data were obtained in sintering lead sulphide flotation concentrates mixed with minus 20-mesh oxide ore, the mixture carrying 16.8 per cent Pb and 5.3 per cent S. No returns were used because of the limited amount of sulphur available as fuel, but the mixture pelletized readily to make a satisfactorily permeable bed on the sintering machine. As there was a possibility that the SO2 might be utilized, a series of runs was made to determine the concentration of SO2 in the gases at different points along the wind box, and the effect on this concentration of changes in the wind-box vacuum. Several runs each were made with vacuums (as measured in inches of water at the wind box) of (1) 2 to 1 3/4 in., (2) 4 to 3 1/2 in. and (3) 6 to 5 1/8 in. The averages of the determinations from each series are platted on the graph (Fig. I). The vertical scale shows the percentage by volume of SO2 (as determined by the Reich method), and the horizontal scale shows the time expressed as percentage of the total sintering time. Sintering was considered to be complete when no SO2 could be detected in the gases. In all cases the depth of bed was 4 1/2 in. and the weight of dry charge per square foot of hearth area was 45.2 lb. Other data are given in the table. The volume of gases corresponding to the several points along the wind box at which SO2 determinations were made could not be measured, but has been calculated from the SO2 content and sulphur elimination on the assumption that the volume is uniform throughout the sintering period. This is not strictly true, as with a given vacuum the volume will usually drop slightly toward the middle of the period and increase toward the end. However, this assumption is a reasonable approximation. Several interesting features are brought out by these data. In general, the published data on SO2 concentration in sintering under ordinary conditions show a high SO2 concentration in the early stages followed by a rapid decrease in concentration and with relatively little SO2 in the gases from the last half or third of the operation. In other words, the greater part of the sulphur elimination is obtained in the first third or half of the period. In these runs, the 6-in. vacuum, which approximates the usual operating condition, gives a curve that follows this customary pattern. Maximum SO2 concentration is obtained 2 ½ min. after

Prof. Henry Lours, of Armstrong College, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, a distinguished member of this Institute and other technical societies, has recently sent to the Institution of Mining Engineers, and to the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, in Great Britain, a communication, the substance of which is as follows : Professor Louis calls attention to the absence of any recognized English term for the definite description of a frequent phenomenon—namely,the oblique position of an ore-body in the plane in which it lies. In this connection, Professor Louis says that in America the term " pitch " has been occasionally applied to this relation, and proposes that, in the literature of ore-deposits, it shall be hereafter restricted to this particular meaning, the angle of the pitch, like that of the dip, being always measured from the horizontal, and the dip being always taken at right angles to the strike, while the pitch is taken on the plane of the dip, in the direction of the strike. Thus, for example, in a vein or bed striking N-S., and dipping, say, 45' E., there might be an ore-body, the axis of which pitched northward, at an angle of 45O below the horizontal line, as measured on the plane of the inclosing vein or bed. If' the term " pitch " had this universally recognized meaning, the situation could be simply and perfectly expressed by its use, in connection with the general data of strike and dip. As Professor Louis says: "This suggestion has a certain practical value, and is not merely academic. Every mining engineer of practical experience in such types of ore-deposit will have met with cases, in which a vertical shaft has been sunk with the object of cutting the deposit, but has missed it, because the dip alone has been taken into account, while the pitch has been overlooked." He adds the acute observation that such an oversight is much likelier to occur with regard to a condition not definitely desig-

A. J. Goldak and J. Gordon Parr (U)iuersity of Alberta) —Margolin and Ence's paper reached us only a few days after we had submitted a paper on the structure of Ti2Cu to the AIME. Here, however, we only wish to point out an error in the paper (page 321): "Karlsson has reported the crystal structure of the first intermediate phase occurring in the Ti-rich portion of the Ti-Cu system to be face-centered tetragonal." Karlsson actually reported the structure of Ti3Cu (i.e., "the first intermediate phase") to be primitive tetragonal with four atoms per lattice point: Cu at 0, 0, 0; and Ti at 1/2, 1/2, 0; 0, 1/2, 1/2; and 1/2, 0, 1/2. Thus, Karlsson suggests a primitive lattice with an ordered arrangement of atoms located at corners and face-centers: Ence and Margolin suggest a random body-centered tetragonal structure—-with which our results agree. E. Ence and H. Margolin (authors' reply)— We do not agree that Karlsson has not reported the structure of Ti3Cu as face-centered tetragonal. The fact that Cu atoms are located at the corners and titanium at the face-centers does not indicate that the lattice is not face-centered. We are pleased that the discussers' results agree with our own.

In a study of grain boundary sliding in superpure Copper (99.999 pct),&apos; bicrystals of a specific shape were used, Fig. 1. That shape was adopted in order to minimize the deformation of grains on both sides of the boundary due to clamping. Another requirement was to obtain bicrystals with a rnicroscopically straight boundary, Fig. 2. Single crystals of predetermined orientation (growth axis parallel to <310>) were grown in a graphite mold from seed crystals. The apparatus for growing single crystals consisted of a vacuum system, argon purification train, vycor tube (in which a graphite mold was placed), a carriage for the induction coi1,and a Lepel (7-1/2 KW) high-frequency converter. The graphite mold was heated by induction and the charge in turn was heated by conduction. The induction coil was moved by means of a motor at a speed of 1 1/2 in. per hr. Single crystals of two different orientations were grown from the melt in one-half of a split graphite mold, Fig. 3(a). Two such crystals were then placed in contact with each other in another split mold, Fig. 3(b) using tapered inserts. Ore distribution being what it is, many of today&apos;s mining companies are forced to develop foreign reserves to satisfy the demands of their customers. This necessity complicates the economic picture for a company, because management must look well be- yond grade and tonnage to determine the feasibility of developing a foreign orebody. Above all, the taxes on such a development must be assessed. The difference that taxes can make in mining profits will be illustrated here for three countries-Canada, Mexico and the United States. For purposes of comparison, identical orebodies will be assumed to occur in all three countries. Only the taxes on these properties will vary. Grade, tonnage, gross income, production costs and production rates will all be the same. The discussion will be limited to federal taxes, because state and provincial taxes are usually negligible by comparison. Assumptions relative to the orebody and the nature of the company undertaking the operation are as follows: (1) Copper is the only value to be recovered. (2) Sixty million tons of ore have been delineated. (3) Underground mining is required, and the production rate will be 3 million tpy. (4) The life of the property is 20 yr. (5) Operations in Mexico or Canada will be handled by a subsidiary of a U.S. parent company. (6) The subsidiary will offer stock.

Recent observations on grain boundary movements in sihcon iron have indicated the possibility of studying grain growth phenomena in two-grain specimens in which several variables affecting growth are readily controlled. These variables are (1) the energy per unit area (?) in the grain boundary, (2) the orientation relationship of the two grains, and (3) the radius of curvature (7) of the moving boundary. Ideally, one grain A should be a narrow rectangular parallelepiped adjacent to a second grain ß as shown two dimensionally in Fig 1. Such a two-grain group becomes unstable when one end of grain A is shaped according to the dotted line. Since the width w of grain A remains constant during growth of grain B, T should also remain constant. The other vari- ables mentioned above can be controlled in the preparation of each two-grain specimen.l,2,3 For a parLicular orientation of each grain, is not necessarily fixed; ? may also depend on the orientation of the grain boundary, but this may be controlled to some degree.
