It has long been known that minute quantities of foreign substances, when alloyed with steel, are capable of materially altering its physical properties. Thus, half a century ago, Faraday and Stodart, in England, discovered in the famous Indian steel, known as " wootz," small quantities of aluminum, from 0.0728 to 0.693 per cent., and attributed its extraordinarily good quality to the presence of such minute quantities of that metal. Since aluminum is now produced by electrolytic means on a large scale and at low cost, its addition to cast-steel has been frequently recommended of late. Chromium was alloyed with steel fifty years ago by the celebrated French metallurgist, Berthier, of Paris, and has recently been successfully applied to the same purpose by Holtzer, of Terre-Noire. In 1860 titanium was alloyed with crucible steel by Robert Mushet, of Coleford, the alloy containing up to 0.50 per cent. of titanium, which was extracted from Norwegian ilmenite. The titanium-steel was much vaunted by him for its excellent qualities. Rhodium, a very rare metal of the platinum series, was maintained by Berthier to improve steel materially in strength and hardness. Manganese has always been held by Sheffield steel-melters to provide steel with excellent qualities, and this influence was quite recently investigated by H. M. Howe and L. Campredon. Nickel was tried as an addition by Berthier, not to speak of gold, silver and platinum ; and nickel-steel has recently been brought into prominence by J. Riley and others, who recommend it for its great strength and toughness, particularly as material for armor-plates.

M. G. CORSON.'-I am not going to discuss any of the papers presented but merely the question of season cracking of brass in general. Alpha brass has been known for nearly 500 yr. and from the very beginning a number of articles were made from sheets of this alloy by the process of spinning. Metal turning lathes were not yet known but wood turning lathes already existed and the wood turners used to make the mandrils and do the brass spinning themselves. Cases of season cracking were known even then. In 1915 I was connected with a small company doing a certain amount of brass spinning. Before the war its products never gave cause for complaint but their war-time products were cracking too frequently. The reason was, that due to the exigencies of war an excessive speed-up was attempted and the material simply could not take it. Today corrosion cracking of brass is most important in the case of cartridges for small arms ammunition and shell cases for large guns. The cracking takes place in storage and too frequently it is explained by the hypothetical presence of vapors of ammonia. However, I had the experience of purchasing some 20,000 rounds for the old Vetterli rifle from the Swiss government in 1905. The rifle and the cartridges were obsolete for many years and those which I bought were stored for at least 10 yr. None of them was found to be cracked or to crack in use. And the reason again was in the amount of work used in manufacturing the cartridges between anneals. The machinery today is more powerful and the amount of

The formation of thin films of silicon oxide by anodic oxidation of silicon and the subsequent removal of these films by an etch is a process often used for the evaluation of concentration distributions Profiles) in silicon layers by the differential sheet conductance method. The accuracy of the resulting profile is very strongly influenced by the uniformity of the thickness of the reacted silicon. Normally, it would be expected that for a constant number of coulombs passed the thickness would be the same from oxidation to oxidation. Investigations show that in certain electrolytes, for a given number of coulombs passed through an n-type silicon sample, the thickness of the reacted silicon increased with increasing resistivity. Even for the same resistivity the thickness varied sometimes by a factor of 1.5. When an electrolyte was used which consisted of 10 pct water by volume in ethylene glycol with 4.0 g KNO per 1000 ml of solution, anodiza-tion at 5 ma per sq cm led to satisfying results. Short-time anodizations gave oxide layers of a higher apparent density than those experienced from thermally gown silicon oxides. THE functioning and the electrical characteristics of semiconductor devices are based upon the incorporation of "impurities" into a single-crystalline body of suitable material and on the concentration distribution (profile) of this impurity. The incorporation can be achieved by well-known processes as, for example, by diffusion, epitaxial growth, alloying, or ion implantation. Often the profile resulting from these processes is not known. A powerful tool to learn about a concentration distribution is given by the method of differential sheet conductance which employs successive four-probe measurements on a layer subjected to stepwise removal of thin sublayers. Differential sheet conductance vs position (or penetration depth) of a sublayer is plotted and a smooth curve is drawn through the data. From this curve the profile is then calculated. When the semiconductor material is silicon, the sublayers are removed suitably by anodic oxidation of the silicon and subsequent dissolving of the formed silicon oxide by an etch. The accuracy of the resulting profile is very strongly influenced by the uniformity of the sublayer thickness. Normally, it would be expected that, for a constant number of coulombs passed, the thickness would be constant from oxidation to oxidation. Investigations showed that for sublayers several hundred angstroms thick the reproducibility can be rather poor. Therefore, efforts were made to obtain a reliable technique for uniform removal. The present paper describes such a technique and certain phenomena which were encountered during the investigations. APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUE The first report on the investigation of concentration distributions, where for differential sheet conductance measurements thin silicon sublayers were removed from a diffused layer by anodic oxidation, was given by Tannenbaum. The author reports the removal of sublayers which for the most part were 400 thick. More advanced device designs now require much narrower layers. When it was tried in these laboratories to determine profiles within such layers, difficulties were encountered with respect to sublayers which by necessity had to be thinner than the ones reported by Tannenbaum. The apparatus used for the investigations is sketched in Fig. 1. Two cylindrical containers connected by a wide tube are filled with an electrolyte. The left container receives the cathode whereas the right container is closed at the bottom end by a sample support consisting of a Teflon base and a copper pedestal. The silicon sample (1 by 1 cm) is mounted to the pedestal embedded flush in the Teflon base using silver paint (Degussa) for electrical contact. Pyseal is applied to the edges of the sample to protect the copper pedestal from the electrolyte. The base is mounted to the container using a water-tight silicon rubber gasket. Fig. 2 gives a view of the sample support. The copper pedestal is connected to the positive side of a power supply operating at a constant current output (Kepco Model ABC 425M). The electrolyte which has been reported by Duffek et al. consisted of either 2 or 10 pct water by volume in ethylene glycol and 4.0 g KNO3 in 1000-ml solution. The electrolyte is best prepared

INTRODUCTION Whenever a mine operator is faced with a decision between various mining methods or even equipment selection, he must be assured that his decision will have a positive effect on his economic operating goals. For instance, if a mine operator has a choice of using an LHD mining system or a slusher mining system, then his decision to use either must not only fit within the operational limitations of the mining plan (such as production requirements, physical features of the ore body, mine plant facilities, manpower requirements, etc.), but also assure that the ore is being extracted at the least possible cost. To aid in his decision making process, the operator will commonly compare acquisition costs, operating costs, maintenance costs, and the operational advantages and disadvantages of each system in addition to considering his personal observations and feelings. A decision to select a mining system using only those criteria aforementioned will not necessarily lead the operator down the path to maximizing profits. In addition, the operator should also compare the economic effects of each system upon the overall mining operation. A relatively simple method for determining the economic effects is to calculate and compare the break-even grades for each system under consideration. By implementing such an analysis, the operator can now select a mining system which can operate within the limits of the mining plan as well as extract the ores at the least possible cost, thus yielding maximum profits. This paper will present the geologic and physical conditions of a mine being operated by the Hypothetical Mining Company in the Grants Mineral District. An LHD and Blusher mining system are under consideration and are compared by examining operating costs, equipment availability, and the conventional operational advantages and disadvantages of each. Finally, the economic effects of each system upon the overall mine's operation are compared by utilizing break-even grade analysis. DESCRIPTION AND MINING METHODS The Hypothetical Mining Company has located an ore body in the Grants Mineral District. After extensive surface exploration drilling and cost considerations are evaluated, it is decided to open a mine. The following tasks must now be performed: 1. outline ore body and it's basic characteristics, 2. look at mining methods currently in use in the area, and 3. determine mining techniques and methods for exploitation of the ore body. For the sake of argument, the newly discovered ore body is located towards the western edge of the Grants Mineral Belt. The host rock for uranium mineralization is the Westwater Member of the Morrison Formation. The Westwater Canyon sands are overlain by the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation and underlain by the Recapture Member, all of Jurassic Age. Westwater Canyon sandstone is a fine to very course grained subarkosic sand with interbedded green and red mudstone. The Brushy Basin Member consists predominantly of greenish-gray mudstones and contains thin lenses of sandstone and a few thin beds of limestone. The Recapture Member consists of alternating thin beds of reddish brown, grayish red, and light gray sandstone and siltstone. The Recapture interfingers with the Cowsprings Sandstone in the area of the mine. The mineralization is based on the groundwater flow within the Morrison Formation. Primary ore distribution is based on three basic parameters: ore migration in a geochemical cell, lenticular mudstone interbedding, and enrichment along fault zones. In areas where two fault systems intersect, ore thicknesses of up to 30 m (100 ft.) are encountered. In those areas where the ore is well defined and thicknesses facilitate full face mining, the mining methods are determined more by ground or operating conditions, equipment availability, and access to working areas than they are in the fringe areas of the ore body where grade control is more important and split-shooting and break-even grade determines the mining technique. If a modified room-and-pillar mining method using systematic development is selected, better control of the ventilation, equipment utilization, and mining plan can be obtained. The diffusivity of carbon (0.1 wt pct C) in Fe-Nz alloys (0 to 100 pct Ni) has been determined for the temperature range 860° to 1100°C. As a function of nickel content, the diffusivity has a maximum near 60 pct Ni (the maximum diffusivity being about 1.3 times that in the absence of nickel); the activation energy has a maximum between 40 and 50 pct Ni and a maximum between 80 and 90 pct Ni. The difference between the minimum activation energy and that in iron is about 3000 cal pev g-atom; Do has a minimum between 40 and 50 pct Ni and a maximum between 80 and 90 pct Ni. The results cannot be rationalized by an approximate thermodynamic treatment. THE diffusivity of carbon has been determined in a number of iron alloys over a limited concentration range. It seemed desirable to investigate a system which allows an extended range of alloy composition within a single-phase region. The Fe-Ni system is ideal in this respect, in that all alloys from 100 pct Fe to 100 pct Ni are fee in a convenient temperature range.&apos; The carbon diffusivity was determined by a decar-burization method. The experimental procedure was identical with that used to determine the diffusivity of carbon in y Fe-Co alloys.2 The experimental data are given in Table I. A small correction (order of a few percent) has been made to the measured carbon loss to correct for the carbon lost from the ends of the cylinders.&apos; Since the diffusivity of carbon varies with carbon content the measured diffusivity is an average value for a carbon content between zero (surface) and that at the center of the sample at the end of the decarburization periods. In making the correction in D to 0.1 wt pct C it is assumed that the measured D corresponds to the arithmetical mean of the carbon content at the surface and at the center of the sample at the end of the decarburization period.3 Since this correction is small (<4 pct in D) and since for our decarburization times the changes in carbon content at the center of the sample was small the mean carbon content could have been taken as half the initial value. It is further assumed that the change in D with carbon content for the alloys is the same as that for the diffusion of carbon in iron. From the data of Wells, Batz, and Mehl4 and of smith5 the correction of D from the mean carbon content to 0.1 wt pct C is 0.3 (0.1 - mean wt pct C). The results for iron are given in Ref. 2. Within the experimental error log Do.l%C for each alloy is a linear function of 1/T; the constants for the equation determined by the method of least squares are given in Table I. The deviations of the experimental points from the least-squares line are of the order of 2 pct in D. A comparison of our results for the diffusivity of carbon in nickel with those of other investigations is shown in Fig. 1. The lower curve in Fig. 1 is a linear extrapolation of values calculated* from the equation of Diamond6 for the relaxation time (temperature range 100° to 500°C). The results indicate a small increase in the activation energy over the temperature range 100° to 1400°C; however, it is difficult to say whether the change in Q is real or experimental error. Certainly the change in Q is less than the variation of 5 kcal per g-atom in the diffusivity of carbon in a iron.6 The experimental data for all the alloys are plotted in Fig. 2. As a function of nickel content the diffusivity has a maximum near 60 wt pct Ni at all temperatures investigated and possibly a minimum between 80 and 90 wt pct Ni for temperatures below 1000°C. The activation energy, Q, and log Do are plotted as a function of the nickel content in Fig. 3. Due to the limited temperature range of our experiments neither Q nor Do can be determined precisely; the activation energies appear to be consistent to ±0.3 kcal per g-atom; however the deviation from the absolute values may be considerably larger, see Table II. The Do values probably have little significance. The solid line for Do in Fig. 3 represents the values required to reproduce the experimental values for D when Q has values represented by the upper solid line The diffusivity of carbon may be expressed in terms of the mobility B22, the activity coefficient r2,

Some of the physical, chemical, and electrical processes for conversion of saline water to potable or industrial water are economically surveyed from an engineering viewpoint. Since all these processes require energy for drive and equipment for containment, the correlative economic factors are developed which indicate directive influences in the choice of particular regional processes. The supply of natural waters and its distance also affect decision. Any one process will probably not prove dominant in the field because auxiliary considerations such as the saline water source; types and continuing availability of fuel; electric power use or recovery; area economic status and advancement; and the political pressures of population, group demands, and land use tend equivocally to obscure capital and operation cost decisions. Basic engineering considerations, data, and economic factors are presented to assist in the direction of these decisions. An exploding world population, increasing industrialization, advancing standards of living, and the desire of less-privileged nations for betterment focus attention sharply on a major problem: water. *19 Up to now, in retrospect, people have had it relatively easy in the handling of this problem. All the better dams in the most advantageous sites, the better aquifers, the shortest aqueducts have been built. In another phase of the problem, concern is evident that wastes cannot indefinitely be disposed of merely by keeping them dilute and discharging them promiscuously. 7-9 And, perhaps, as past civilizations have done,l5 water, watersheds, streams, and irrigation may have been mismanaged or, at the least, not adequately studied.3,5,36,37 In this last is perhaps the core of the problem. As Gross states, "Ignorance and too often, indifference are contributing factors. Archaeology and theology both furnish ample testimony to the existence of rich lands where deserts now stand; it was man who ravaged his land. Unless education is a companion to water development, development might as well be forgotten. But without water, there is no beginning."13 The U.S. is showing increasing concern about its water for predictions are that by 1980 the daily withdrawals will be 494 billion gal, a figure nearly equal to the dependable supply.Is This is based on a conservative projected population of 230 million. The major categories of withdrawals are: To make available this per capita average of 2150 gal per day will require an expenditure of $219 billion over the next 20 years. The U.S. is not alone in this concern. The United Nations shows as arid zones of the world: all of Africa north of the equator and south of the 20&apos;s parallel; all of the Arabian peninsula; all of the middle east and Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, northern and central India; a great band about 1000 miles wide along the 40&apos;~ parallel from the Caspian Sea east across Russia through China to the Pacific Ocean; all of Australia except the coastal plain; the Caribbean Islands; the western nations of South America; and the western third of the United States and of Mexico. With one quarter of the earth&apos;s 57,500,000 sq miles of land thus suffering from lack of good water, increasing attention goes to the treatment of brackish and sea waters. The U.S. has been a leader in this field4,12, 16123,24 through its Office of Saline Water in the Dept. of Interior because even now some of its cities and regions are short of potable water. 11j&apos;7,M Industrial water is also of vital concern as a result of ever higher industrialization1,14122 Other nations, among them JaPan, Israel,13188 Germany, Union of South Africa, Australia, Netherlands, France, Yugoslavia, Russia, and groups such as the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC)&apos; are also diligent. The objective is low cost water, which means that both technology and economics have prominent roles in saline water conversion processes. (communication to the Secretary*). -It is much to he regretted that in presenting a further discussion of these deposits, first described by myself&apos; and later discussed by C. M. Weld,2 Mr. Wang bas not made a more complete presentation of the evidence on which he bases his conclusions as to their origin. Mr. Weld said in his paper that his visit was confined to a few hours, that he saw only one of the several exposures, and that he took away no samples for further study. My own visit was brief, and for another purpose than the study of the geological features of &apos;the deposits, so the fact that Mr. Weld described as a hornblende-granite the rock which I described as a "dark gray syenitic rock," and which Mr. Wang identifies as a hornblende-syenite, seems of no great importance, since this rock is generally decomposed along the contact, presumably the only place in which Mr. Weld observed it. Later in the same paper (p. 31), Mr. Weld says that his opinion is that the magnetite of the deposits is primary, but Mr. Wang makes no mention of this in stating his own conclusion to the same effect. When Mr. Weld&apos;s paper appeared, I did not discuss it, because, although I considered the evidence- that he brought forward to support his belief that the magnetite is primary too slender to support the hypothesis, my own evidence to the contrary was equally tenuous. .The opportunities for observation and study open to Mr. Wang must have provided him with

The Robinson Mining District, near Ely, Nev., is one of the major porphyry copper districts in the world. Within the district is an eight mile long east-trending zone of altered porphyry, metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, and sulphide mineralization surrounded by Paleozoic limestone, dolomite, shale and sandstone, Tertiary volcanics, and Quaternary alluvium. Six major disseminated ore deposits have been exploited in this zone. About 20% of the district production has come from disseminated ore in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks found adjacent to altered quartz-monzonite porphyry. The following brief statements summarize some of the relations between porphyry alteration, metamor-phism, and mineralization: 1) Disseminated copper ore does not occur in unaltered porphyry or in m-metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. 2) Sedimentary rocks have been only weakly metamorphosed where intruded by unaltered porphyry. 3) Intensely metamorphosed sedimentary rocks are found only adjacent to altered porphyry. 4) Many hydrothermal minerals are common to both altered porphyry and adjacent metamorphosed sediments. 5) Disseminated ore is found in altered porphyry and adjacent metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. 6) In general, there is a direct correlation between grade of ore in porphyry and copper content in the adjacent rocks. 7) Chemical changes in the altered porphyry and metamorphosed rocks appear to be related. The foregoing relations support a hypothesis that the porphyry alteration, the metamorphism of the sedimentary rocks, and the ore deposition were all part of a continuous hydrothermal process which probably closely attended the porphyry intrusion. The Robinson Mining District, most often referred to as the Ruth or Ely District, is located in eastern Nev. and is one of the major porphyry copper districts of the world. Production from 1908 through 1962 was nearly 250 million tons of ore averaging a little over one percent copper with a total metal value of nearly one billion dollars. The ore has been produced from six major disseminated-type deposits with the Liberty Pit deposit accounting for 70% of the total district production. Less than one million tons of base metal and gold ores have been produced from the replacement-type deposits of the district. Approximately 20% of the district production has come from underground mining operations; the pit ore has been mined with shovels and removed by train haulage, truck-train haulage combinations, truck haulage, and presently by a combination truck-skip system. Many of the ore deposits formerly worked by underground methods have been and are being exploited by open pit methods. (See Fig. I.) Two co.&apos;s have accounted for virtually the entire production from the district. In 1958 Kennecott Copper Corp. acquired the district assets of Consolidated Coppermines Corp. and is now the sole ore producer in the district. Present operations are confined to the Liberty Pit where 22,500 tons of ore averaging a little less than 0.8% copper is mined per day. Cutoff grade is 0.4% copper, and the stripping ratio is three to one. The ore is hauled by rail 23 miles to the McGill Reduction Plant where it is concentrated to about 20% copper. Molybdenite is recovered as a by-product in the mill. The copper concentrates are smelted in McGill, and the blister copper is shipped for refining to Balt. where gold, silver, platinum and palladium are recovered. The Robinson Mining District has been well known as a porphyry copper district for the past fifty years, but many geologists are unaware of the fact that a large portion of the production has come from disseminated ore found in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. The scope of this paper describes the occurrences of disseminated ore in the various metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, and presents evidence for the hypothesis that these ores are genetically, spacially, and coevally related to the disseminated ore in the porphyry rocks. Publication of this paper was granted by the management of Kennecott Copper Corp. A. H. James suggested and encouraged the writing of the manuscript. Special mineralogical and spectrographic analyses were performed by the Kennecott Research Center. The Chairman.—Mr. Earle Smith has kindly offered to make some remarks in connection with segregation in the product, Mr. Smith: E. C. Smith,* Cleveland, Ohio—I will start this Off by a story oF the code days of the American Iron and Steel Institute. In those days, Republic did not have a big strip mill, and the question came up of the check analysis of rimmed steel. I suggested that they let me be the chairman of the Committee on Accumulating the Information on the Variation of the Composition of the Ingots of Rimmed Steel. Somebody wanted to know why I wanted to be the chairman. I said, "we don&apos;t make any of the big ingots of rimmed steel, and no matter who makes them they are so bad that you don&apos;t dare publish the information. So if 1 collect it and hide it you can&apos;t charge me with having done anything that really disrupted the commercial situation." So, everybody furnished me with a rather complete story as to the horrible variations in big rimmed ingots. I took it out to my house and put it away, and it is still there. Now, segregation in the big ingot is no longer an "academic " matter as far as I am concerned. I am in a situation like that of the German who was told in 1956 about the coming war. He said: "until it is your throat that is going to be cut, you don&apos;t pay any attention to what is happening to the otherman." &apos;That is the way with the problem that we have in front of us. Recently I have been told that the &apos;Omptroller was questioning the payment for certain articles of stamped steel that had been made from rimmed steel, because upon check analysis of the rimmed steel it had been determined that these stamped articles were nut within the compositions that were included in the specification, and therefore he as the camptroller had no alternative. It was not meeting the specification; therefore, no payment. So I I say to all of you: You can very seriously consider this matter of segregation now and on into the future on the basis of the fact that it is actually going to cost your companies, which are making these products, money unless there is some new idea about the infallibility of quantitative , chemists who analyze some of these products or lawyers who read specifications, I don&apos;t know which man is going to be the major factor in the future. if the National Bureau of Standards could in some way show the specification writers the variation between good chemists analyzing for That they expect to be umpire eel. the writers would certainly realize that some of the to to which we have calmly signed our names as being O.K. are— well, as one man said to me, they might be filled by the devil, and they certainly could be filled by the Lord, but they could not he me by mankind. I would like to inject two or three things into a segregation study which I Want you to think about, because 1 would be a little surprised if there is very much discussion of them, In the first place, we generslly make steel in the United States in the basic open hearth, and I do not think there has bee,, nearly enough consideration given to segregation German the bath before it moves into the ladle. Results of research are presented examining the extent to which the analytical characteristics of the relatively distinct coal bands from a variety of coal seams can be related to each other. This paper dis-cusses an approach for developing a practical coal petrographic quality control program based on conventional analyses, most of which is part of the standard A.S.T.M. procedure. The work is a final follow-up to Part I of this series which was prepared by the authors as an approach to applying conventional coal petrography to single coal seams. Recent published work by the authors entitled Petrography for Coal Mining and Coal Prepration: Part I dealt with interrelating various chemical and physical properties of coal1 measured using conventional analyses made on distinct petrographic bands taken from single coal seams. Since most coal production facilities process coal from a single coal seam or from very closely related coal seams in the same area,2 emphasis on interrelating the properties within a single seam appeared appropriate. The distinct petrographic bands were analyzed on the assumption that such differentiated data would be more representative of a heterogeneous coal seam than the single analytical value commonly used to characterize each property of an entire seam.34 Effort was directed at demonstrating the extent to which the interrelated chemical and physical properties 5,6 could be developed into nomographs or petrographic standardization graphs. Thus, one analysis, determined on a series of petrographic fractions separated from a single sample, was used to estimate numerous other properties in each fraction by referring to the previously established petrographic standardization graphs. This conventional approach to coal petrography was undertaken as a suggested feasible means by which a few coal analyses could be employed to develope a more penetrating knowledge of the properties of coal from any given seam in order to monitor more extensively its performance at the point of utilization. Such procedures can support development of the type of in- formation commonly sought through automated testing and through the use of computers.7 The broad knowledge which can be developed through these procedures is intended for application in the generation of an analytical profile or broad characterization of coal. These estimates were not intended as replacements for individual coal analytical tests. In this expanded second part of the research program, distinct petrographic bands from nine coal seams in the Central Appalachian Region were physically and chemically analyzed to elucidate the extent to which this concept of conventional petrography could be broadened for application to numerous coal seams. In presenting this second phase of work, the relationships developed are presented individually and not in a connecting series of nomographs or petrographic standardization graphs as in the previous work, thus leaving open the combinations of possibilities to individual interpretation and application. MATERIAL AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK Nine coal seams, representing a wide range of rank, from the Central Appalachian coal fields were used in this study. The distinct petrographic bands from the Kittanning, Pond Creek, Jawbone, Tiller, Poca-hontas No. 3, No. 2 Gas, Eagle, Winifrede, and Pittsburgh coal seams were separated by carefully removing a portion of each band at the face of the seam. The following were determined: ash, sulfur, free swelling index, heating value, bulk specific gravity, volatile matter, Hardgrove Grindability Index, and Gieseler Plastometer measurements. Determinations, where procedures were available, were carried out using ASTM standard procedures.8 Bulk specific gravity was determined using a kerosene volume displacement procedure modified from a method applied by Headlee and McClelland of the West Virginia Geological survey,9 Those bands with a bulk specific gravity greater than 1.60, which is generally above the practical specific gravity cleaning range of bituminous coals, were excluded and no analyses were performed. Much of the initial organization of this second phase of work was developed through the extensive use of a computerized statistical monitoring program (see Ref. 4). A system of differential equations describing the temperature behavior of fluid injected at constant surface temperature in a well is derived and .solved analytically. A formula for the fluid temperature at any time and depth is given, as well us a special formula valid for very large times. These formulas are used to calculate temperatures for several typical cases. The results indicate that, initially, the temperature of the water entering the formation is considerably lower than the injection temperature. This condition lasts for only a short period— less than three days for most cases of practical interest. Following this highly transient period, during which the temperature of the fluid entering the formation builds up to about 50 to 75 per cent of the injection temperature. the system enters a quasi-steady state in which the temperature changes are very slow. After severl years, the bottom-hole temperature will still be 50" to 100°F lower than the injection temperature, hilt the heat losses may he tolerable. INTRODUCTION Predicting the behavior of a hot-water flood requires that the temperature of the water entering the injection interval be estimated. This report describes the development and solution of a system of equations which describes the temperature behavior of the injected water in the wellbore with certain simplifying assumptions. The only previous means known to the authors for describing such a process is that of Moss and White.&apos; Their results appear to be close to those obtained by our method in the practical cases which were compared; this agreement is largely due to the fact that in our method temperature soon approaches a quasi-steady state, as was assumed in their method throughout. However, our model covers all times, is continuous (whereas the Moss-White model depends on breaking the depth into discrete intervals) and. we feel. more closely describes the physical problem. FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM PHYSICAL SYSTEM AND ASSUMPTIONS The injection procedure consists of pumping water at a fixed surface temperature T., down an infinitely long cylindrical well or tubing of inner radius Any material exterior to the water column such as mud, casing, or cement is regarded as part of the formation. The general behavior of the system may be described qualitatively as follows. When the hot water is first introduced into the system, the temperature difference between the formation and the water is large, resulting in a high rate of heat transfer. As a result, the temperature adjacent to the wellbore rises very quickly. Because the segment of the formation adjacent to the wellbore largely controls the heat transfer rate, the heat transfer rate will become relatively constant when this portion has reached a temperature close to that of the water opposite it. The temperature of the water and formation then increase very slowly with time. The length of the initial highly transient period and the temperature of the water at its conclusion will be functions of depth, injection rate, injection-string radius, surface injection temperature and the physical properties associated with the water-formation system. The following additional assumptions were made. 1. There is no heat transfer by radiation in the system. 2. There is no heat transfer by conduction in the vertical direction in either the injection stream or the formation. 3. The linear volumetric and mass flow rate of the water is constant throughout the injection stream. 4. No horizontal temperature gradient exists in the injection stream. 5. The product of density and heat capacity is constant for both the water and the formation, and the formation thermal conductivity is constant. 6. Initially, both the water in the wellbore and the reservoir are at a temperature given by the (constant) ambient surface temperature plus the product of depth and geothermal gradient (assumed constant). At large distances for the wellbore (r m), the formation will remain at this temperature. 7. The water temperature and the formation temperature at r — r,, are equal for all depths D. Discussion of the paper of HENRY M. HONE and ARTHUR G. LEVY, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 99, March, 1915, pp. 587 to 600. J. E. STEAD, Middlesbrough, England (communication to the Secretary*).-As I have not personally studied the question of quenched and distorted manganese steels I cannot give any information of my own on the subject. The question as to whether certain indications in strained manganese steel are "slip bands" or "twins" might be settled, I think, by heat tinting-a method I have applied with success to certain meteorites and other alpha irons in which there were undoubted twins. After polishing and very slightly etching with picric acid in alcohol, and then "heat tinting," the colors assumed by the twinned strata and the adjoining metal are different. The reason of this, as I have proved repeatedly, is that different faces of the iron crystals are differently attacked by oxidizing and other reagents, and consequently some of the faces take temper oxidation tints more rapidly than others. This simple method enables one to determine with certainty whether the "twins" are actually, twins and differently oriented from the bed in which they are found. After correspondence with Dr. Howe, I think we both agree that Neumann lines should not be called "lines" but "bands" or "strata," preferably the latter term, as I have found that they are more or less continuous throughout the crystals, and it would be just as improper to call the edges of cementite plate by the term "lines" as to call stratified twins by the same term.

G. W. TRAER (author&apos;s reply to discussion*).-Prof. Parr&apos;s discussion develops two points, upon which it seems desirable to comment. First, as to putting through a large enough tonnage to secure economic operation. At each manipulation of each oven 1500 1b. (680 kg.) of coal will be charged and the resultant coke discharged from a like amount of coal. . Sixteen slabs will be discharged at each manipulation, each approximately 5 ½ in. by 11 in. by 6 ft. (14 cm. by 28 cm. by 1.8 m.). The operating schedule of a commercial plant, based upon our observations and calculations, indicates a "through put" of at least 12 tons of coal per day for each oven. We have made these figures conservatively and feel confident of materially exceeding them in a fully developed operating system. Our oven plant, with containers, will not cost as much as high-temperature plants of the same capacity. They do not require container equipment; but this is much more than offset by the cost of the great basal heat regenerative flues. Our operating requirements are quite susceptible to the application of mechanical devices and we believe our labor cost will be well within the necessary limit. Second, as to Fig. 1 in my paper, showing the specific gravity&apos; of the tar. It Was not intended to show that the specific- gravity of -the tar rises With decreasing heat, since of course the contrary is the fact. One of the curves shows the relation between temperature and specific gravity and the other the relation between temperature and- yield. Our consulting engineer prepared the chart according to his customary method for showing two dimensions.

Geography: The Tagtepe district of the Vilayet of Eskigehir is about 20 miles northeast of the city of Eskigehir (approximately midway between Ankara and Istanbul) in western Anatolia. The area is a mountainous one, the highest peak being Tagtepe Mountain (5200 ft) which is approximately in the center of the district. The mountains drop off to the deep valley of the Sakarya River on the north and to the plain of Eskigehir on the south. For the most part, the watershed is on the northern side of the mountain barrier, draining into the Sakarya River, which in turn empties into the Black Sea midway between Zonguldak and the mouth of the Bosphorus. The approximate area covered by the Tagtepe district is shown in fig. 1. Transportation to shipping points is available via the Istanbul-Ankara railroad. The station on this line nearest the mining district is Alpikoy station, about 20 miles by road southwest of Tagtepe Mountain. Interior roads within the district are poor. Being of dirt, the winter rains and snows render them almost impassable for trucks from about the middle of December until the end of March, thus presenting a considerable transportation problem. However, the roads from the Bagoren and Tagtepe chromite mines to the railroad shipping point at Alpikoy station have recently been repaired and will be maintained for all-weather truck transportation. Detailed climatic data are not available. However, in general the spring, summer, and early autumn months are dry, and good weather may be expected from May until early November. Then the winter rains commence, and heavy snow is usual during January and February. Geology: The mountainous structure of Tagtepe belongs to basic rocks of serpentine (Variscan Orogeny) which is in contact with Paleozoic schists at west, and an Oligocene outcrop of red clays in Margi-Sepetci region (see fig. 1) at southeast. The northwest and southwest borders of Tagtepe district are, respectively, surrounded by Paleozoic schists and pebbly gray and yellow Neogene clays. More recent formations of alluviums overlay the plain of Eskigehir. Dark basic rocks of trachytes with hornblende are visible on Turkmenbaba Mountain, at the west of Tagtepe. Mineral Occurrences: Chromite: the most important mineral found in any quantity in the Tagtepe district. The alignment of the deposits of chromite is in general along the line Bagoren-Tagtepe (see fig. 1). The first mines in the area were those of Tagtepe and Bagoren, which were developed over 20 years ago with Swedish capital. Other deposits of chromite, more recently discovered and so far of less importance, are being worked at Kurucor, Komurcu, Gelinmezari, and Lacin (see fig. 1). Deposits average generally between 46 and 48 pct chromic oxide, with the exception of the Bagoren mine which averages 44 pct. However, a new lode, very recently plotted, in the Tagtepe mine averages 50 pct Cr,O,, 4.6 pct SOz, and 7 pct FeO. Geological character of the chromite occurrences in the Tagtepe mine may be considered typical of most chromite lodes in this area. The indications are that the formations of ore lenses are developed by the segregation of chromite crystals intruded into the serpentinized rock, and exposed later to tectonic movement within the zone of crystallization. All lenticular masses are more or less regular in shape and follow each other in southeast-northwest direction and dip generally 70" NE. Ore lenses do not seem to persist in depth, average depth of two lenses is 60 ft below surface. Three lodes .have been mined as open-pit. The average dimensions of individual lenses are as follows: pitch length, 100 ft; breadth, 27 ft; and width, 20 ft. At Giant Yellowknife, where high grade gold-bearing orebodies are highly irregular in shape, geology has been applied extensively to the mining of ore. The classical functions of the mine geologist in the fields of exploration and mine development have been extended to guide ore extraction, ensuring "clean" mining and effectively reducing waste dilution. THE property of Giant Yellowknife Gold M.ines Ltd. is situated west of Yellowknife Bay on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, a distance of 600 air miles north of Edmonton, Alberta. The Giant claims were staked in 1935, the company was formed in 1937, and the main orebody system was disclosed by diamond drilling in 1944 following a geological study of the property by A. S. Dadson,* Consulting Geologist for the company. Production began in 1948 at the rate of 200 tons per day and, during 1950, reached a daily rate of 425 tons. During the first 3 years of operation a total of 366,000 tons was milled with an average grade of 0.79 oz of gold per ton. Work is in progress with an expansion to 700 tons per day in view. A descriptive account of the geology and gold-bearing shear zone has appeared previously.* The rock formations in the vicinity of Yellowknife Bay have been subjected to protracted pre-Cambrian tectonic deformation culminating in a series of late faults having a cumulative horizontal displacement exceeding 11 miles. The Giant property is underlain by part of an Archean sequence, several miles thick, consisting of basic volcanic flows and minor intercalated tuffs. The volcanic succession forms the west limb of a major syncline, the flows facing east, but overturned on Giant property to dip west at 65" to 75". Orebodies are confined to shear zones up to 200 ft in width, which were formed along early thrust faults. The shear zones assume fold-like attitudes, the larger of which have an amplitude of several hundred feet. The rock formations beyond the limits of the zone of shearing do not reflect the simulated folds, the axes of which are within a few degrees of the strike of the flows. The schistosity and most of the planar elements in both the shear zones and the orebodies dip west • A. S. Dadson and J. D. Bateman: Structural Geology of Camdian Ore Deposits, Can. Inst. Min. Met. Jubilee Volume (1948), PP 273-283. at angles between 65" and 75", generally corresponding to the dip of the flows. The planar elements within the shear zone system thus dip more or less constantly west whether the shear zone is flat, vertical, or expressed as east or west dipping limbs. The shear zones reflect the deformation and alteration of the basic volcanic flows into chlorite schists which, in most places, have undergone metasomatic replacement to form chlorite-sericite-carbonate schists or sericite schists. The boundaries between the shear zones and country rock, although often gradational, usually can be defined within a few feet or even inches as they are expressed by the limits of metasomatic alteration. Orebodies may occupy a small or large proportion of the shear zone and, although they generally conform to the shape of the zone, their morphology is much more complex. Ore boundaries in some instances are sharp and can be delineated with a chalk line; but more generally, a large proportion of the ore boundaries is not visually obvious and can be determined only by the perception acquired by the geological mapping of ore or study of drill cores. Ore shoots in fold-like attitudes may transect the planar elements of the shear zone at any angle; yet the schistosity within the ore shoot may be coincident with that in the enclosing shear zone. Thus it is clear that problems may arise in the delineation of mining boundaries. Ore generally consists of 20 pct or more quartz with ferruginous carbonates in sericite schist deposited in two dominant stages. The earlier stage limits of quartz with carbonate, pyrite, and very fine-grained arsenopyrite in lenses and bands. The later stage consists of quartz-carbonate lodes, in

Measurements of enthalpy changes and transformation temperatures me reported for the fcc -hcp marten-sitic transformation in pure cobalt single and multi-variant crystals andpolycrystalline specimens. From these measurements the free-energy difference between the two phases was calculated for both heating and cooling and for repeated cycles through the transformation. For heating of single crystals the average value of enthalpy change was 113 cal per mole but on cooling it was 84 cal per mole. This difference is interpreted in terms of lattice imperfections which are introduced during transformation. A calorimeter suitable for measurement of enthalpy changes of athertnal transformations is described. COBALT exhibits an allotropic phase transformation at around 417°C&apos; where an hcp phase (a = 2.507, c = 4.0686, c/a = 1.6228)~ stable at low temperatures transforms to an fcc phase stable up to 1495°C. The transformation has a hysteresis of about 30°C— the exact magnitude of the hysteresis depending on the number of transformation cycles, grain size, impurity content, and prior treatment.&apos;-6 The athermal character of the transformation and surface relief due to transformation shear indicate that the transformation is martensitic. Pole mechanisms for the transformation have been discussed by Sebilleau and Bibrin, Bilby, Seeger,&apos; and Basinski and Christian. These authors have proposed that the cooling transformation is effected by rotation of a Shockley partial dislocation around a pole dislocation with a screw component of 2a/3(111). Such a rotation would change the stacking of close-packed planes from the abcabc fcc stacking to the ababab hcp stacking sequence. This mechanism would predict a lattice correspondence of {111}fcc~~(0002~cp, have been observed. One would expect the heating transformation to occur similarly, involving dislocation movements on the (0002)hcp. However, a high density of pole dislocations and high dislocation ve- locity are required to account for microscopic observations. Furthermore, the high back stress developed on the Shockley partial dislocation as it rotates toward the sessile dislocation associated with it makes it doubtful that this is in fact the transformation mechanism. A mechanism for spontaneous nucleation of partial dislocations1*l2 seems more reasonable. If a single crystal of cobalt is cycled through the transformation but never heated above 600°C, it will remain single."13 However, if the specimen is heated through the transformation and held for a short time at or above 1000°C before cooling, the cooling transformation usually involves all four {lll}fcc habits, resulting in neighboring orientations of hcp differing by 70.5 deg. This condition is termed multivariance and has been observed by Bibring and sebilleau5 and Nelson and ~ltstetter.&apos; The latter authors used single crystals of cobalt grown in an electron beam zone refiner. They proposed that the strongly directional cooling caused the initial cooling transformation to occur on the {lll)fcc most nearly perpendicular to the temperature gradient. Transformation shear on one set of {lll}fcc planes immobilized dislocations on the other {lll}fcc planes involved in the initial transformation. Since there is only one (0002)hcp plane orientation, the product of subsequent heating transformations could have no more than two variants—the original fcc orientation or its twin. If, however, the specimen was annealed at a high temperature, such as 1000°C, there would be relaxation of dislocations into low-energy configurations, and in the absence of a sharp temperature gradient transformation on all four (111 Ifcc planes could occur. If a dislocation mechanism is responsible for the transformation, the perfection of the lattice should affect the reversibility of the transformation. Mutual constraints of neighboring grains in polycrystalline material would inhibit dislocation movement resulting in increasingly sluggish transformation. Indeed, Nelson and Altstetter found the M, to decrease and the A, to increase in going from single crystals to multi-variant specimens to polycrystals. The effect is enhanced by decreasing the grain size of a solid specimen or a powder.6&apos;14 Data on the free-energy difference necessary to initiate the transformation gives information about the driving force of the transformation. This is an important consideration in the understanding of the transformation mechanism. The free-energy change associated with the transformation of the hcp phase to the fcc phase at some temperature T different from the equi-

A simplified theory of viscous fingering in miscible systems has been developed. It predicts the correct functional relationship between pertinent variables and permits the calculation of the order of magnitude of fingering behavior for simple systems, such as linear or radial. The theory is based on the following four observations: (1) cross-flow takes place only near the ends of fingers; (2) the relative finger width is about 0.5; (3) fingers can be suppressed by transverse dispersion, the suppression being quantitatively described by a critical ratio of dispersion times; and (4) the widths of extending fingers are close to the minimum size finger that can grow at any stage of displacement. Fingering is studied in two-dimensional linear and diverging radial systems, both theoretically and experimentally. For linear systems, the length of the fingered region is proportional to mean displacement; the finger width is proportional to square root of mean displacement; and there is a small initial region void of fingers because of suppression by longitudinal dispersion. For the radial system, two limiting conditions are recognized. If the mean displacement is small compared with the wellbore radius, the length of the fingered region is proportional to the mean displacement. The width is proportional to the square root of mean displacement. If the mean displacement is large compared with wellbore radius, length of the fingered region is proportional to mean displacement, but the number of fingers approaches a constant value. Also, in the radial case there is a small initial region void of fingers because of longitudinal dispersion. INTRODUCTION The behavior of viscous fingers in miscible systems has been of interest to the oil industry for many years. Previous studies have clearly shown the existence and nature of fingers in small models.1,2,3,4 Engineering techniques for extrapolating to reservoir situations have been proposed. 5,6 Still, because of the lack of a real understanding of the mechanics of fingering, there remains uncertainty and disagreement as to the best way to scale or calculate fingering behavior in the reservoir. In this paper we discuss a study of the mechanics of fingering in miscible systems (i.e., why do fingers behave as they do?). A simplified theory is developed which we believe will (1) predict the correct functional relationship between pertinent variables, (2) permit us to calculate the order of magnitude of fingering behavior for simple systems such as linear and radial, and (3) give further insight into the problem of scaling or otherwise extending the results to more complicated reservoir conditions. The paper includes the following sections: (1) brief summary of the mixing behavior of miscible fluids in linear and radial systems; (2) four fundamental observations of fluid flow (under fingering conditions); (3) based on these four observations, a simplified theory of fingering in linear and radial systems is developed; and (4) the theoretical equations are compared with experimental fingering data measured in laboratory models. A REVIEW OF DIFFUSION AND DISPERSION As will be shown later, the behavior of viscous fingers in miscible systems is controlled in large degree by the mixing between the two fluids. A quantitative description of fingers will first require a quantitative description of mixing. Fortunately, much work has been done to clarify this subject; a fairly comprehensive review has been presented in a previous paper. 7 For present purposes let us (1) briefly summarize the quantitative description of diffusion and dispersion (both longitudinal and transverse) within a differential element; (2) present a simplification of the "width of mixed zone"; and (3) describe the effect of geometry on width of mixed zone.
