IN the commercial annealing of cartridge brass there are four points regarding which definite data are essential. They have to do with the correct interpretation of grain count in its relation to annealing temperature and, incidentally, to Brinell hardness. These points are: 1. The comparison of the grain sizes of two cartridge-brass mixtures: 69 copper, 31 zinc, 0.376-in. (9.5-min.) gage; and 68 copper, 32 zinc, 0.130-in. (3.3-mm.) gage. 2. The comparison of the grain sizes of annealed metal that had previously been reduced by rolling varying amounts; for instance, 20.0, 36.6, 50.9, and 59.1 per cent. 3. The determination of standards for grain sizes on annealed brass of the composition 68 per cent. copper, 32 per cent. zinc and 69 copper, 31 zinc. 4. The comparison of grain size with Brinell hardness on identical samples of annealed metal. In their comprehensive and thorough investigation of the recrystallization of cold-worked alpha brass on annealing,1 Mathewson and Phillips have discussed the relations between temperature of anneal, degree of deformation, and structural alteration in alpha brass. They have also shown certain comparisons between the ordinary physical properties and the grain size of annealed brass. The purpose of the present investigation is mainly concerned with the grain size of cartridge brass, its relation to Brinell hardness, and the publication of sufficient data to enable those engaged in the inspection of such material to have a correct foundation upon which to work.

The investigations described were made on a portion of Clear Creek basin near Golden, Colo. (-4 portion of the area under survey is shown in Fig. 1. The photograph was taken in the vicinity of station No. 2 of Line 11.) Three principal purposes were in the minds of the investigators: 1. To repeat with modern, more sensitive and more reliable instruments magnetometric placer investigations previously made. 2. To disprove the recently advanced theory that deposits of the glacial period have no pronounced magnetic effects. 3. To develop in detail the theory of the magnetic effects produced by placer deposits. Six years ago, the first magnetic observations were published, which proved that it is possible to locate gold-bearing channels with relatively crude instruments.' Two years ago, K. C. Laylander published results obtained with similar instruments.2 The measurements of the latter were discussed by the senior author of this paper.3 At that time, however, the material available for such a discussion was somewhat scarce and not made with the most modern magnetic instruments, although very brilliant results were obtained. Therefore, the senior author felt that magnetic investigations should be made on very clear geologic conditions with the most modern instruments. Comparison of Magnetometers The junior author undertook this work in the spring of 1928. The magnetic field balances, for vertical and horizontal intensities, designed by Schmidt were used (Figs. 2 and 3). The scale value of these instruments was approximately 257 and 157, respectively. A simple physical model was used to develop an equation that relates the electrical conductivity of a water-saturatedshaly sand to the water conductivity and the cation-exchange capacity per unit pore volume of the rock. This equation fits both the experimental data of Hill and Milburn and data obtained recently on selected shaly sands with a wide range of cation-exchange capacities. This model was extended to cases where both oil and water are present in the shaly sand. This results in an additional expression, relating the resistivity ratio to water saturation, water conductivity and cation-exchange capacity per unit pore volume. The effect of shale content on the resistivity index - water saturation function is demonstrated by several numerical examples. INTRODUCTION A principal aim of well logging is to provide quantitative information concerning porosity and oil saturation of the permeable formations penetrated by the borehole. For clean sands, the relationships between measured physical quantities and porosity or saturation are well known. However, the presence of clay minerals greatly complicates log interpretation, particularly the electrical resistivity and SP logs, and considerably affects evaluation of hydrocarbon-bearing formations. The conductance and electrochemical behavior of shaly sands and their relation to log interpretation have been studied by many workers. wylliel and Lunch2 reviewed this work in some detail. Virtually all laboratory measurements of electrical resistivity and electrochemical potential of shaly sands published to date are the work of Hill and Milburn.3 Their measurements were made on about 300 cores covering a large variety of sedimentary rocks, and a wide range of equilibrating NaCl solution concentrations. Hill and Milburn described their conductivity data by an empirical equation in which the shaly sand conductivity Co was expressed as a function of the solution conductivity C and two parameters b and F01 . The quantity b was shown to be a measure of the effective clay content of the rock, being approximately proportional to the cation-exchange capacity of the rock divided by its pore volume. The latter ratio is designated as 9, in this paper and has the dimensions meq/ml or equiv/liter. Qv is identical with the term representing the concentration of fixed charges in the Meyer-Sieved and Teorel15 theory of permselective membrane behavior. F01 is a formation resistivity factor referred to a hypothetical equilibrating solution resistivity of 0.01 ohm m at 25C,* where clay effects presumably are minimized. F01 was correlated to porosity by an Archie-type equation.6 The Hill-Milburn equation describes their data with a standard deviation of approximately 1 percent and a maximum deviation of + 10 percent. Shaly sands behave as permselective cation-exchange membranes, their electrochemical efficiencies increasing with increasing clay content. The electrochemical potential data of Hill and Milburn were expressed graphically, and demonstrate that the membrane efficiency (or cation transport number) of these sands is a function only of the b value (i.e., Qv) and the respective salt concentrations of the two solutions forming the liquid junction in the sand. The diffusion potentials are not dependent on F01 or any parameter relating to the porosity or pore geometry of the rock. The Hill-Milburn resistivity equation correctly predicts a decreasing sand conductivity Co with decreasing solution conductivity C?. However, at some low value of C,, the calculated Co-C, function goes through a minimum; with further decrease in C?, the predicted sand conductivity increases sharply. As pointed out by Hill and Milburn, an increasing value of Co with decreasing C, is physically meaningless. Since this occurs below the range of practical values of C,, the usefulness of the empirical equation is not affected when

The migration of hydrogen and of deuterium dissolved in a iron and in nickel induced by an applied electrical potential has been measured over a range of temperature. In all cases the intevstitial solute migrates to the cathode. The deduced charges of transport are positive, independent of or slightly dependent on temperature, and markedly larger for the beavier mass. These results are interpreted as showing predominating momenlum transfer between electron holes and the acticated complex of the elementary diffusion act. THE migration of components of a metallic system under the action of an applied electrical potential is called electromigration or electratransport. This phenomenon has been known since 1861 and is becoming of increasing interest to metal scientists because of the opportunity it offers to explore the connections between mass transport and electron transport. Until recently, reliable data have been very scarce because of the difficulties inherent in the measurements. In addition, theoretical understanding has been either nonexistent or rudimentary and at present this situation is only moderately improved. Whereas the prevalent notion had been (and is still widely held) that electromigration directly reflects the state of ionization of a component in its equilibrium state in the metal, it is now becoming clear that the major, if not the sole, factor is the momentum transfer between the charge carriers, themselves in motion because of the applied field, and the metallic components in their activated state. It becomes important therefore to obtain reliable data over a range of temperature on electrornigration in systems where only one component moves, that is, either in pure metals (vacancy motion) or in interstitial solid solutions. Our choice of systems was dictated by our measurements' of the Soret effect in solid solutions of hydrogen and deuterium in iron and nickel. Indeed, the main reason for making measurements on electromigration at all is that we suspected a mechanistic connection between thermal diffusion and electromigration. In our former paper' we proposed that what is common to both phenomena is the momentum transfer between the charge carriers in the metal and the atom as it jumps from one equilibrium position to another. In Soret diffusion, however, there is in addition the dissipation of the energy of the jumping atom via pho-nons. We have since found that similar ideas for this interconnection have been developed by Fiks.2 In the present paper we will discuss in more detail our understanding of the mechanism of electromigration itself, but we turn first to a presentation of the experiments and results. EXPERIMENTS AND RESULTS Let us consider a metallic system in which only one component, m , can diffuse at the temperature in question, and to which are applied simultaneously an electrical potential gradient, grad cp, and a chemical potential gradient, grad p,. One may write3 for the material flux Jm and the electronic charge flux Je by applying the condition, grad = 0, to Eq. [I] and evaluating grad(um/T) for the isothermal case and for activity coefficient independent of composition over the relevant composition range. ere, c is the concentration and D the diffusivity of the mobile component. The experimental technique that we have used to measure Z* for the isotopes of hydrogen individually dissolved in each of two transition metals has been developed from a method used by Wagner and Heller.4 (A somewhat similar method was also used by Herold.5) A wire or thin rod of the metal under study connects two volumes of gaseous hydrogen at identical pressures; hence grad um = 0. A direct current is made to pass through the specimen, serving to maintain the specimen at the desired temperature and also to produce the electromigration of the hydrogen dissolved in the metal in equilibrium with the gaseous hydrogen. This paper presents the results of a study of the principles which control the distribution of ultrafine particles between an oil phase and an aqueous phase. Alkyl sulfonates were used to control the wettability of fine alumina particles and to stabilize the water-isooctane emulsion system in the extraction process. The effects of sulfonate chain length, sulfonate adsorption, pH, and oil-water ratio on the recovery of solids in the oil phase were investigated. Higher extraction was found under conditions which yield higher hydrophobicity and large interfacial area of the oil-water emulsion. Today there is considerable interest in developing methods for the recovery of fine particles from disseminated ores. One such method might be the extraction of fine particulate solids from aqueous suspensions into an oil phase, and one example of a successful industrial process based on oil-water distribution phenomena is the emulsion flotation process used in concentrating manganese ore.' The oil agglomeration process of Farnand, Smith, and Puddington has been suggested for concentrating tin ore. Patents 3-4 for oil flotation processes extend back to that of William Haynes in 1860. The basis of all these processes is directly related to the stabilization of emulsions with solid particles. The first extensive study of oil-water emulsions stabilized by finely divided solids was made by Pickering. Later, Briggs,6 weston, 7 Chessman and King,8 and Leja and Schulman9 experimentally demonstrated how solid particles control water-oil and oil-water systems. Hildebrand10 suggested that fine particles can stabilize an emulsion because the fine particles are partially wettable by both oil and water, that is, that the contact angle must be finite. Takakuwa and Takamori 11 recently applied emulsion inversion to the study of collector adsorption in flotation systems. At the Royal School of Mines, Shergold and Mellgren12 are currently carrying out a comprehensive study of the extraction of fine particles into an organic liquid phase. In the present study of the liquid extraction or oil flotation of ultrafine particles, the recovery of hydro-philic alumina particles of 0.1-µ average diameter was determined after separating an isooctane-water mixture (emulsion) into its two phases. Alkyl sulfonates of different chain lengths were used to change the wettability of the alumina and to effect emulsifi-cation of the oil-water mixture. The effects of the oil-water volume ratio, sulfonate adsorption, and pH on the recovery of the fine particles were investigated. Since the surface charge on an oxide such as alumina is determined by the adsorption or interaction of H+ and OH- with the surface, pH control is extremely important. Furthermore, since the zero point of charge (zpc) of alumina13-14 occurs at pH 9 to 9.4, major adsorption effects with anionic collectors in these systems will occur below pH 9. The results of the foregoing investigation are discussed in terms of the recovery of the fine particles, the oil-water ratio, contact angles, surface tension, the adsorption of sulfonate onto the solid surface, and the emulsifica-tion of oil. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Materials: The particulate solid used in all the experiments was Linde "A" alumina, a high-purity, readily available form of a-alumina. The surface area of the alumina, as evaluated from measurements of stearic acid adsorption from benzene, was 14.5 sq m per gm, based on a value of 20.5 sq Å for the cross-sectional area of stearic acid.13 All aqueous solutions were prepared from triply distilled conductivity water. The San Miguelito Field of Ventura County, California, lies along the coast approximately five miles northwest of the city of Ventura. The structure is one of several in the Ventura anticline, a series of anticlinal folds trending northwest-southeast through the San Miguelito Field. The Ventura Avenue Field lies to the southeast along the anticline, and Padre Canyon and Rin-con Fields lie to the northwest; the series then extends beneath the Pacific Ocean. Production is obtained from the Lower Pico and Repetto formations of Pliocene age, and oil accumulation is controlled by faulting, lithology and structure. The first well in the First Grubb Pool was completed in November, 1931, and to date 48 producing wells have been drilled on the 276 productive acres. Approximately 685 ft of net pay are contained in the eight sand bodies grossing 1,220 ft of section. Production of oil to date has been 15,-600,000 bbl. A gas injection project was instigated in April, 1940, but was discontinued in September, 1949. This paper is confined to a discussion of the development and performance history of the First Grubb Pool of the San Miguelito Field. LOCATION AND GEOLOGY The San Miguelito Oil Field is located in Ventura County about five miles northwest of the city of Ventura along the coastal highway to Santa Barbara. It is located within sections 23, 24, 25, and 30 of Township 3 North, Range 24 West, San Bernardino Base and Meridian. Surface elevation in the field ranges from sea level to plus 1,200 ft, and the terrain is extremely rugged. The structure is well defined on the surface and on the wall of the Amphitheatre Canyon where appears a so-called "text book" anticlinal section. The San Miguelito structure is an asymmetrical, elongated anticline about two miles long and three-fourths of a mile wide. The trend of the axis of the anticline is northwest-southeast. Fig. 9 illustrates the contours and major faults of this structure. Dips on the southwesterly flank average about 40 degrees, whereas the northeasterly flank ranges from 60 to 75 degrees. There are several faults striking generally east and west. These faults do not appear to affect materially the area of accumulation or performance behavior. It is believed that accumulation was affected by steeply dipping beds and extremely low permeability of the northeast flank of the structure. As shown by the typical log, Fig. 1. the San Miguelito Field is divided into two stratigraphic producing intervals. The First Grubb Pool comprises the interval from the "G" to "L" markers; the Second Grubb Pool from the "L" to "M" markers. The First Grubb Pool, ranging in thickness from 1,105 to 1,680 ft, with an average of 1,220 ft, includes approximately 685 ft of oil-bearing sands. The First Grubb zone consists of eight sand intervals separated by shales. The shale bodies separating the eight sand intervals within the First Grubb Pool are continuous throughout the major part of the structure and serve as an effective barrier. Many of the thin, irregular shale or siltstone streaks within these sand bodies are discontinuous and do not affect well performance appreciably. The productive horizons in the First Grubb Pool are siltstones and sandstones of the Lower Pico and Repetto formations of Pliocene age. It is apparent from inspection of the typical log that the "G" to "L" interval might have been separated into at least six producing zones and selectively pro. duced. Unfortunately the electric log and some of our modern tools were not available or were in their infancy dur. ing the period 1931 through 1937. Not until 1937 when eight wells had been completed were there sufficient geological data to permit definition of the sand bodies. The Getchell area in the northern Osgood Range, Humboldt County, Nevada, was first prospected in the late 1800s for silver, copper, and gold; the first recorded mention of mining activity concerned a silver discovery. The September 17, 1874 edition of the Winnemucca Silver State notes that the Crystal Mining District was newly organized in the Fremont Range (as the Osgood Range was then called) to include discoveries of silver, lead, and antimony made on the Louisa claim. The name Crystal was derived from the plentiful quartz crystals found in-cavities near the prospects. This same area, occurring on the northwestern margin of the Osgood granodiorite stock, was later mined as the Richmond tungsten property, and crystals may still be found there in cavities in a massive garnet tactite. By 1878, how-ever, the name Crystal had been abandoned in favor of Potosi. The next flurry of activity in the Osgood Range was reported in 1899 when a copper strike on Granite Creek in the southern portion of the range received attention. The copper occukences were in a granite contact zone on the southeastern edge of the Osgood stock and, in 1916, the first tungsten in the district was discovered in the same deposit. During the last part of the nineteenth century, cattle and sheep were brought into the Kelly Creek Valley east of the Osgood Mountains by various ranchers. Alphonso and Adrian Bernard were among these ranchers, and in the first decade of the twentieth century, one of them recognized the altered rock where the Getchell Center it is now located. A 3-m (10-ft) deep prospect pit was dug on the outcrop, but the highest assay ran about $11/t ($10 per st). No further work was done on the gold-bearing rock. In 1934, Emmet Chase of Battle Mountain and Ed Knight of Golconda prospected in the area of the Bernard prospect pit and located several lode claims. At this time, Noble H. Getchell, a state senator, was looking for new mining opportunities to develop. He held interests in the Gold Circle Consolidated at Midas, which was becoming a losing venture. Chase and Knight brought their discovery to his attention, and he grubstaked them to prospect further in the area. In need of financial backing, Getchell solicited the help of George Wingfield, Sr., who held a minor interest in the Gold Circle. Wingfield was a successful banker and mine operator during the heyday of Tonopah and Goldfield, and he had become good friends with Henry C. Frick and Bernard Baruch. Wingfield let Baruch in on several very successful mining ventures in Goldfield, and Baruch returned the favor by underwriting the financing of the Getchell mine. Eleanor Roosevelt and Jack Dempsey were early stockholders in the Getchell operation. George Wingfield brought his brother-in-law, Roy A. Hardy, a consulting engineer who had constructed the American Flat mill near Virginia City, to look at the property. Upon inspecting the Chase-Knight claims, Hardy declared the whole area to be mineralized. A crosscut was driven to check the extent of the ore, and the results were better than anticipated. The locators were reportedly given $50,000 for the claims. The Getchell Mine, Inc., was organized on November 5, 1936. A small railroad that ran from Battle Mountain to Austin was purchased, and the ties and rails were moved to Getchell to be used in underground exploration. Enough reserves were found in the Center and South pit areas to construct a 40 t/d (44 stpd) mill. The financial and engineering help for the mill was provided by the Newmont Mining Co. for a 17 1/2% interest in the corporation. Newmont set about trying to solve the metallurgical problems with the sulfide ore, and also directed the early development work. Newmont wanted to grind the sulfide ore underground and oxidize it in the atmosphere by spreading salt on it. Detrital Flat in Arizona was purchased to provide salt for

Activation of sphalerite with silver ions results from the exchange of two Ag ions for one Zn ion in the sphalerite lattice. The exchange is proportional to the logarithm of time and proceeds until either of the reactants is consumed. Sodium cyanide prevents the activation of sphalerite by controlling the ratio [Zn++]/[Ag+]' in solution. If sphalerite has already been activated with excess silver, cyanide ions can deactivate sphalerite provided oxygen is present. SOLUBLE: silver salts are effective activators for flotation of sphalerite with potassium ethyl xan-thate as collector.* Since sphalerite takes up large quantities of silver ions rapidly,2-4 investigation of this system appeared fruitful for studying the mechanism of sphalerite activation and deactivation. Experimental data presented here comprise studies of the mechanism and rates of activation and deactivation of sphalerite with silver and cyanide ions. A 20-lb sample of sphalerite from Ottawa County, Oklahoma, was handpicked, crushed, screened, hy-drosized to produce a 65/100-mesh fraction, and purified by electrostatic separation. The sphalerite was then leached with benzene and absolute ethyl alcohol to remove possible organic contaminants and with 0.1 M NaCN to remove any copper that might have been picked up during screening. The benzene had been specially purified by grinding with fine sphalerite for 12 hr to remove trace impurities that might have had a specific affinity for sphalerite. Ii'inally, the mineral was washed, dried in flowing nitrogen, and stored in large ground-glass stoppered weighing bottles under a small nitrogen pressure. The specific surface of two samples from the 65/100-mesh sphalerite stock, measured by krypton gas adsorption," was 420 cm2 per g. Compared with spheres of the same size and specific gravity, the prepared mineral had five times as much surface. Results of a wet chemical analysis and of a spectro-graphic study are given in Table I. Manganese, nickel, tin, indium, thallium, cobalt, and magnesium were not detected spectrographically. All solutions were preparid by -adding reagent-grade chemicals to conductivitv water. which had been previously saturated with the desired gases. Nitrogen and oxygen were purified, but no attempt was made to purify the laboratory air. Radioanalysis was carried out with prepurified Ag110 tracer obtained from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The complete decay scheme for Ae is complex. Its primary emissions are 0.09 and 0.55 mev ß rays and 1.48 mev y raysB and its half-life is believed to be 270 days. In preparation of solutions of AgNO3, the amount of Ag110 added was negligible compared to that of the inert silver. Abstraction of silver from solution by sphalerite was measured after agitation of 1.5 g sphalerite with 20 ml of solution in 50-ml pyrex flasks. All sample preparations were carried out in a dry box so that the proper atmosphere could be maintained. After the mineral had been agitated in the silver nitrate solution, an aliquot of the solution and a sample of the wet mineral were transferred to separate counting vials and weighed. The solid sample was dried and re-weighed and the activity in both vials measured by means of a scintillation counter. With scintillation counting it is possible to count y radiation from the solid and liquid, a distinct advantage over the older ß-ray counting techdiques.4 All measurements of silver activity were made using a sodium-iodide well-type scintillation counter. The amount of zinc in solution was measured colorimet-rically by the monocolor method of Sandell.7 Activation Studies Exchange Between Zinc Ions and Silver Ions During Activation: The increase of Zn++ in solution during activation with Ag+ is shown in Table 11. These data indicate a replacement of one Zn++ by two Ag+. Analysis of a separate two-month agitation test indicated that the replacement of Zn++ by Ag+ was, as expected, in the molar ratio of 2.0.

AS with Phil Kraft, referred to on this page last month, travel has always held a great fascination for Raymond Frank Baker and for that reason he determined to become a geologist. He had heard that geologists travel and that was what he wanted to do. Now as chief geologist for The Texas Co. his early wish has been fulfilled-he spends almost one third of his time journeying' from one oil field to another. Mr. Baker was born in New Haven, Conn., on Jan. 11, 1892, and went through the public schools in New Britain. A stalwart New Englander, he attended Yale and in 1912 received a degree in civil engineering. For a year following this he worked as a civil engineer for the New York Central Railroad, but his early urge to travel widely could not be satisfied here. So in 1913 he re-entered Yale and until 1916 studied mining and economic geology. He had a little taste of field work, which later became so enjoyable to him, in the summer of 1915 when he worked with the U. S. Geological Survey as a geologic aid. In 1916 he made his first contact with The Texas Co. when he entered their Tulsa office as a geologist. This early career was interrupted by service in the

A three-dimensional, multilayer, mathematical model has been developed for predicting performance by mis-c.ible displacement. Areal and vertical coverage, total gas-oil ratio, propane-oil ratio and oil-recovery factor for the multilayer system are computed as functions of hydrocarbon pore volumes of solvent injected. The technique has been programed for use on the IBM-7090 digital computer and was used in calculating perfortnance for continuous miscible displacement of a five-spot, 50-layer .system. Results reported are based on the use of published laboratory data for a single, uniform five-spot layer. However, the technique is sufficiently generalized to calculate performance of any system of layers of any pattern configuration and mobility ratio, provided data are available to describe perfortilance of a single layer. The technique has also been adapted for predicting oil recovery resulting from various gas-driven slug sizes. The results presented for both continuous and slug-type injection show, that permeability variation has 0 significant effect on oil recovery but that solvent composition, within the range studied, has a lesser effect on oil recovery. INTRODUCTION Experience from many of the miscible-phase displacement projects currently in operation indicates that the injected solvent flows preferentially through the more permeable zones in the reservoir. This preferential solvent flow in the high-permeability streaks results in a reduction of vertical coverage (C,) and an attendant decrease in oil recovery. The multilayer technique presented in this paper uses areal coverage (C.,) data for a single layer from the literature and from laboratory measurements of displacement efficiency (herein referred to as microscopic coverage, C,,) to calculate areal coverage (C,) and vertical coverage (C,) for the multilayer system. Oil recovery for the multilayer system is obtained as the product of (Ca) (Cm) (Cv). It is assumed that C, in a single layer is 100 per cent; therefore, (C,) (Cm) is a measure of oil recovery from that layer. Data presented in the literature for a single layer generally deal only with areal coverage and/or microscopic coverage —but seldom specifically with oil recovery. Nevertheless, this technique is flexible in that either Ca and C,, of an individual layer or a direct measurement of oil recovery for the layer may be used. In developing this technique, the problem arose concerning a method of determining the relative amounts of solvent that will enter each layer during any increment of solvent injected. To solve the problem, a dimensionless equation was derived for expressing solvent injected into each layer as a fraction of total injection. A finite-difference method was applied in integrating the equation to determine oil recovery for the system of layers as a function of pore volumes injected. The technique subsequently was programed for solution on a digital computer. The method was applied to predict performance of a deep California reservoir under continuous miscible displacement and has been extended for calculating oil recovery as a function of slug size for gas-driven slug injection. The technique may be applied to any petroleum reservoir that can be adequately represented as a layered system, by considering permeability variation,1-3 permeability range and average permeability. Each layer is then assigned its appropriate permeability, porosity and hydrocarbon saturation. RESERVOIR VOLUME CONTACTED BY SOLVENT It has been recognized for some time that high microscopic coverage (C,) can be obtained by injecting a miscible agent, such as propane, into an oil reservoir. These high values of C,,, have been demonstrated in the laboratory and are normally between 80 and 100 per cent, depending on solvent and reservoir oil composition as well as on reservoir temperature and pressure. In miscible-phase displacement, because there is no interface between solvent and oil, effective permeability to solvent is the same as that to oil. (This assumes that oil saturation has not changed and that water is immobile.) Consequently, mobility ratio (M) simply reduces to that of viscosity ratio . Probably the largest single tungsten deposit in the U. S. is one that has yet to produce any tungsten; it is not even listed in tables showing U. S. reserves. This deposit is at Searles Lake, Calif., where the brine contains about 70 ppm WO3. Small though the concentration is, the amount of brine in the lake is so great that it is estimated at 170 million lb of WO3 (8.5 million units), equaling the total of all other known reserves in the U. S. This dry lake is located in the basin formed by the Argus and Slate ranges in the northeastern corner of the Mojave Desert (Fig. 1). It consists of a massive salt body some 35 sq miles in extent, varying in thickness from 0 to 120 ft and containing more than 3 billion tons of salt. A central section of about L. G. CARPENTER and D. IN ATTEMPTING to summarize briefly the reconstruction of the Hecla plant since the fire, three important facts must be held in mind; namely: a hurry-up job with the shadow of an insurance company in the background; restriction of working space in the narrow Burke Canyon; and building two-thirds of the plant on a filled area. Construction work was carried on without interruption through the winter season. These adverse conditions have contributed many obstacles not ordinarily encountered in mining work. The first problems immediately after the fire were organization and policy; the-former to create an efficient construction crew out of a mining organization; the latter to determine the type and extent of surface plant to be built. The new crew was organized from a nucleus of mine employees, 25 per cent. of the old crew remaining for construction work. Permanent fireproof buildings were decided upon, the general arrangement of the new plant to be similar to the old one as far as possible, at the same time enlarging it 100 per cent. in anticipation of the demands which would be made upon it when the Star Mine began operating. Cleaning up the wreckage was a big job, the extent of which is indicated by the fact that 30 carloads of scrap iron and steel were moved off the property. In re-establishing transportation facilities at the plant, a previous disadvantage of a steep grade on the high line was obviated by excavating 1600 yd. of solid rock; the fire having destroyed all town buildings below, made this work possible.

In the mining operations of The Canyon Corp., Deadwood. S. D., the use of mucking machines has been of definite advantage. The type used is that which depends upon the traction of the motor-driven wheels to crowd the dipper into the muck pile, while the car in which the muck is received is coupled to the mucker and moves forward or back with it. This general arrangement is entirely satisfactory on a substantially level track. The ores which occur in this district are a replacement of dolomite and the beds are now tilted to an inclination of about 7-1/20. In our operations it is necessary to drive inclines down-hill on this slope, which makes a difficult hand-mucking job even if water were not present. With these facts in mind, an attempt was made to use the mucking machine for driving down the in- cline, but as expected, the traction was insufficient to handle the machine and the necessary car. The means used to correct this condition will perhaps impress most readers as too complicated and cumbersome to effect any economy, but the idea may be of service to some who have a similar condition. When glass spheres are crushed by slow compression loading, the outer lune-shaped fragments resulting from the fracture consistently fly outward at high velocity. About 45 pct of the strain energy fed into the sphere-platen system reappears in the form of the kinetic energy possessed by these fragments. These measurements were obtained from high-speed photographs. This kinetic energy can be utilized for addtional comminution if the fragments are allowed to impact against a suitable structure. Comminution theory has advanced considerably in recent years by the study of this unit operation under laboratory conditions. Some of the parameters have been isolated, but the experimental measurements of the pertinent quantities, such as energy, particle size, etc., are still only made prior to and after the conclusion of a fracture sequence. The catastrophic fracture process itself has not been adequately studied from a comminution point of view. It has recently been suggested by Gilvarry that the fragments which result from the free crushing of a single glass sphere by slow compression contain a considerable amount of kinetic energy after fracture. This kinetic energy, if properly directed, possibly can be partially utilized to cause additional fracture. In this paper a hypothesis will be presented which suggests that this kinetic energy is necessarily present and that its dissipation is the process by which a large part of the thermal energy imparted to the crushed product is generated. Evidence supporting the existence of kinetic energy and its utilization for secondary fracture will also be presented. THEORETICAL A previous paper4 has shown that the load-deformation curve of a system composed of an elastic sphere gripped by a pair of parallel platens, can be predicted by a consideration of the theories of Hertz as summarized by Timoshenko.' The deformation A, of one half of the system is given by which states that the deformation is a function of the mutually applied load, P, the radius of the sphere, R; and the respective physical properties of Poisson's ratio, v, and Young's modulus of elasticity, Y. The shape of experimental load-deformation curves conform to this relationship. The energy input to the sphere-platen system, can be predicted from the integral of the load acting through the appropriate distance, dA. Since dA can be evaluated in terms of P from the derivative of Eq. 1, this integral can be integrated between limits of 0 and P. The test sphere, however, is loaded at not one but at two points of contact, i.e., at both ends of a diameter, and hence the total energy input, E, is twice the energy input at each end, or The energy input to the system calculated from this equation corresponds to the energy computed from the measured area under the load-deformation curve. J. B. Cohen (AVCO Mfg. Co.)-The model presented by the authors is only one of several possible mechanisms for low-temperature aging. It is true that the motion of dislocations to the copper atoms, followed by diffusion along the dislocation lines, is one such mechanism. However, the details of such a process which would :result in copper-rich platelets on (100) planes in the f.c.c. matrix are not clear. Furthermore, there is at least one other mechanism that may be used to e.xplain the authors' results, so that the data do not clearly favor the Turnbull model. The zones may form by "normal" diffusion. The diffusion constants would be higher at room temperature than extrapolated data would suggest due to vacancies trapped in the specimens in the quench. The diffusivity would then be multiplied by the ratio of the number of vacancies present at the solution temperature to that present at room temperature. These vacancies could remain in the alloy specimen for long times at room temerature, due to interaction with the copper atoms. ' The activation energy for diffusion is smaller than that for bulk diffusion at elevated temperatures for it is only that for the motion of vacancies existing after the quench; after these are used up, the aging process effectively ceases. It is somewhat questionable if the laws governing transformation kinetics can be directly applied to changes in elastic moduli, especially in the case of aging where the structure and the composition of the zones may be changing during aging, If such laws are assumed, it is possible to explain the exponential factor of % with this vacancy model. It is probable that the structure of the zones and the matrix match only on (100) planes. Certainly the precipitates that form in this system after various aging treatments show orientation relationships similar to those of the zones. Strains on the edges of the zone may set up fields which do not allow the zone to grow in an edgewise manner. The exponent in the growth of a thin plate in a direction perpendicular to its face would be %. It may also be that copper atoms are attracted to dislocations. If this is the rate-controllin factor in the growth process Ifthisthen an exponent of % or % may arise. The writer would like to know if the authors have tried plotting l/a; proportional to as might be expected for "dislocation drainage." R. H. Doremus (General Electric Research Laboratory)—An important new method for following the growth of Guinier-Preston zones is presented in this paper, and I wish to congratulate the authors on their experiments. Their interpretation of the results, however, is doubtful in certain respects. To determine the exponent m in Eq. [4] the authors plotted -log at against t to various powers (their Fig. 6). The initial value of frequency used for these plots was found by extrapolating the data to zero time. In Fig. A the data from their Fig. 2 are plotted against a linear, rather than logarithmic, time scale. To obtain graphs similar to their Fig. 6 for these data one must use an initial frequency of about 52720; such a plot for m = % is shown in Fig. B. The best currently available description of the longitudinal mixing properties of a porous medium is an equation of the form which relates the effective longitudinal dispersion coefficient Dp to the molecular diffusion coefficient Do, the electrical resistivity factor F, the porosity <f> and a Peclet number. If the parameters dpa and m are determined for a porous medium of known porosity and electrical resistivity factor, then a dispersion coefficient may be estimated for a given flow rate and a given gas pair. A new method, featuring on-line gas analysis by thermal conductivity and on-line data reduction by analog computation, was developed and used to determine these mixing parameters for eight naturally occurring sandstones and two dolomite samples. The exponent m of the above equation was found to vary between 1.0 and 1.5. The characteristic length dpa in the above equation was found to vary between 0.25 and 1.9 cm, with an average value of 0.4 cm for sandstones. Measurements were made on two cores in which paraffin wax had been deposited by evaporation from a pentane solution. They indicated that the presence of an immobile phase such as connate water could increase the dispersion coefficients significantly. INTRODUCTION While the petroleum and chemical industries have studied the mixing of miscible liquids flowing in consolidated porous media and of miscible gases flowing in unconsolidated porous media, relatively little data have been presented to describe the mixing of gases flowing through consolidated porous media. Such data are of particular interest to the gas storage industry. For instance, the U. S. Bureau of Mines is storing large quantities of a rich helium-nitrogen gas in contact with a natural gas in a dolomite reservoir. Since the rich gas occupies only 15 percent of the total reservoir volume, it is essential that the extent of rich gas-natural gas mixing be predicted and understood as a function of rock properties, pressure and rate of movement. This investigation was concerned only with the determination of longitudinal dispersion coefficients. It is understood that a transverse dispersion coefficient, which characterizes mixing perpendicular to the direction of flow, may be an order of magnitude less than the coefficient characterizing mixing in the direction of bulk flow.5719 It should also be recognized that the use of any dispersion coefficient is in itself a simplification. It is necessary to assume that mixing in a porous medium may be characterized by the equation for flow in a single direction. A number of authors1 l8,19 have pursued the mixing problem, not in terms of the so-called "dispersion model" described by Eq. 1, but in terms of a "mixing cell model". This model supposes that a porous medium is constructed of a large number of small mixing chambers and that the concentration of the diffusing component within each mixing chamber is uniform. Fick&apos;s law (Eq. 1) assumes that there is no gross by-passing of one fluid by another, and that there are not stagnant pockets of gas in the system under consideration as discussed by Coats and Smith.8 These assumptions are not always valid for flow through porous media and it is important to recognize the limitations upon Eq. 1.
