I desire to state briefly my views respecting the great practical value of the Watertown testing-machine, and the necessity that exists, for an able permanent commission to supervise its operations, in order that the results of all tests made thereon may be properly worked out and rendered available for public use. It is doubtless known to the Institute that this machine has, for the past two years, been placed at the service of the public upon payment of a per diem charge. It was my privilege to be among the first to use the testing-machine, and the results of my first experiments were of such importance, owing to the great capacity and extreme accuracy of the machine, that it has since become my practice to have tests of all materials used in constructions that came under my charge, made at Watertown. As a conseqnence, nearly one hundred tests have been made on my account directly, and some two hundred and forty additional for work built from my designs. It may be confidently affirmed, that the factor of anxiety on all these structures is exceedingly small .m far as the quality of material is concerned, and it is undoubtedly a very great advantage for parties interested in construction to have

EDWIN LUDLOW, the 41st President of the A. I. M. E., died in Muskogee, Okla., on Feb. 10, 1924, after a brief illness of influenza followed by pneumonia. He was born in Oakdale, Long Island, N. Y., March 12, 1858, a son of William Handy and Louise (Nicoll) Ludlow, attended Flushing (L. I.) Institute 1868-75: and Columbia School of Mines (N. Y.) where he graduated with the degree of Engineer of Mines with the Class of 1879. After graduation his first employment was as assistant engineer in river and harbor work on the Delaware River near Philadelphia. In 1881 he went to Mexico as one of the engineers on the Mexican Central Railroad, then building from Laredo, Texas, to Mexico City. The road being in financial difficulties he returned to the United, [states, and shortly thereafter was made superintendent of the Union Coal Co.'s collieries located in the western middle anthracite field, between Shamokin and Mt. Carmel. Ludlow and Arthur H. Storrs, then superintendent of the Neilson Shaft Colliery, in Shamokin, were known throughout that section as the baby superintendents, both under 25 years of age. One Sunday night last month the phone rang and it was George Schenck from Penn State. How would we like to see a big scrap operation, he wanted to know. A few days later we were on the Connecticut turnpike headed for New Haven to visit a large scrap operation, M. Schiavone and Sons. George had a large clam basket in the back which he explained was for collecting trophies. The car shredder, he said, turns out some fancy metal shapes. In fact, they have gained a certain acceptance as objets d’art among George's friends and relatives. He thinks there may be a small, but possibly lucrative secondary market for shredded cars in the art world if the idea is imaginatively promoted. On the way to New Haven we received a briefing on the scrap industry. The scrap business grew from humble beginnings. Mostly it was started by a few immigrant Jews who collected junk in hand- or horse-drawn carts. The fortunate one might even have had a truck. Before proceeding further, we hasten to point out that the word "junk" is strictly taboo among scrap people, who prefer to refer to their industry as the "secondary metals industry."

H. M. HOWE, Bedford Hills, N. Y.-One wonders, whether it might not be well to check, by a rather simple and direct way, the inferences that would be drawn from this investigation. Suppose we quench, in these various liquids cylinders of steel, selecting material that is not likely to split in hardening, and then examine their cross-sections micro-scopically. If the cylinder is of any size, you will find a series of concentric bands, a very hard band, a softer band, and a hard band-but it seems that here would be a way of checking the inferences from the cooling curves by comparing these waves of hardness obtained in similar speci-mens quenched in different liquids. One would think that there would be great promise in that way. One's first thought is to quench similar pieces of steel, similarly heated, in different liquids and determine their hardness. I suppose many of us have tried that. We then meet the-difficulty that it is not the most rapid cooling that gives the greatest hardness. There is an intermediate rate of cooling that gives maximum hardness so that you can not by any simple method as that check this cooling method. But it seems possible

TO say that Milton Fies has been active in promoting the Southern Research Institute is a masterpiece of understatement. He is a director and trustee who was in on the ground floor when plans were first made for the Institute and since it became an actuality early in 1945 his interest and efforts continue. He talked about it at the last regional meeting of the Birmingham Section of the A.F.A. and has talked all over the South-and when he makes a speech he has really prepared it. He does not try to rival a political spellbinder, but his careful, concise English is always well thought out and to the point. Southern Research might be called his present hobby as it has been for the past two or three years. Another major interest has been his encouragement and training of engineering students. Active in the formation of the Student Chapter of the A.I.M.E. at the University of Alabama, for several years he saw to it that the students had a prominent engineer at each monthly meeting, usually taking them down to Tuscaloosa from Birmingham in his own automobile. He has also been keenly interested in the mining engineering activities at Tuscaloosa, both in the Bureau of Mines and the University.

The effect oj unidirectional solidification upon the microstructural, crystallographic and mechanical characteristics of high -purity A1-A13Ni eutectic a1loy specimens has been investigated. varying the growth rate caused the morphology of the Al3Ni phase to gradually change from platelets to rods. In addition, the effect of increasing the rate of planar liquid-solid interlace movement is to decrease the Al3Ni rod diameter and inter-rod spacing. The platelets and rods grow approxinlately parallel to each other and are aligned in a faulted substructure. A single unique crystallographic relationship hetween the A1 and ASNi phases was found and may he descrihed as : interface {001} Al3Ni {331} Al and growth direction <010>Al3Ni || <110> Al The platelet interlace and the aligned rows of rods are both uniquely defined by the above statements. Alignment of the Al3Ni phase by unidirectional solidification has given rise to a threefold increase in strength over that exhibited by specimens with an as-cast microstructure. These results illustrate the possible use of this eutectic alloy as a zohisker -reinforced structure. It has been demonstrated by Winegard et al.,1 Kraft and Albrighht,2 Chilton and winegard,3 Chad-wick,4 Yue,5 Tiller,6 and others that a planar liquid-solid interface may be established in binary eutectic alloys by proper control of heat flow during the solidification process. The unidirectional movement of such an interface results in a eutectic mi-crostructure consisting of an essentially parallel array of the two phases over an entire ingot. Two dominant phase micromorphologies have been produced using this technique: that of substantially parallel alternating lamellae of each phase or long thin parallel rods of one phase imbedded in a continuous matrix of the other phase. While not all eutectics can be controlled in this manner, it has been shown that a "normal" eutectic may, under properly controlled conditions of purity, liquid and solid thermal gradients, and solidification rate, be forced to solidify with essentially parallel phase particles. Kraft and Albright2 have demonstrated that, when the growth rate is too rapid or when the thermal gradient in the liquid at the growing interface is too low, a layer of constitutionally supercooled liquid, formed by impurity build-up, will stabilize a cellular rather than a planar interface. The unidirectional movement of the cellular interface forms the macrostructure of eutectic colonies.7 Chilton,3 Chadwick,4 and Tiller,&apos; studying eutectics of zone-refined Pb-Sn, A1-CuAl2, Zn-Sn, and Cd-Zn systems, noted that in the absence of impurities a planar interface is stabilized even when rapidly solidified. Although it is generally agreed that impurities break down a planar interface to form the eutectic-colony macrostructure, at present the origin of the varying micromorphologies (i.c., plates or rods) in a given normal eutectic alloy is not completely understood. Tiller8 has predicted that the micromor-phology produced may be dependent on solidification rate (i.e., at fast rates a rodlike structure is preferred whereas at slow rates a lamellar structure should form), and also suggested that rod formation may be favored at large phase-volume ratios. yue5 has experimentally verified Tiller&apos;s prediction in the eutectic Mg-Mg17Al12 by observing a lamellae-to-rod transition with increasing growth rate where the phase-volume ratio was approximately 2.3:1. However, Hunt and chilton9 more recently unidirec-tionally solidified over a wide range of growth velocities six different eutectic systems with phase-volume ratios between 12:l and 2.7:1 and observed no lamellae-to-rod transition. chadwickl0 has proposed that the change in micromorphology in some eutectic alloys is due entirely to the presence of impurities and further states that the lamellar structure is the characteristic structure of pure eutectic alloys even when the phase-volume ratio is as great as 12:l. Kraft11,12 has shown that the parallel lamellae in certain eutectic alloys assume a unique crystallographic relationship during unidirectional growth. This preferred crystallography may be developed

THE sixteenth annual meeting of the Woman&apos;s Aux¬iliary, A. I. M. E., was held Tuesday morning, Feb. 16, at the Engineering Societies Building. The meeting was well attended, there being 99 registered from the metropolitan area and 78 from the sections throughout the United States. Mrs. Sharpless, the secretary, read the minutes of the annual meeting held a year ago, after which Mrs. Bassett, the president, gave her address of welcome. Mrs. Bassett said in part: "I would like, at this time, to welcome you all to this, our sixteenth annual meeting, and to express my appreciation to all the national officers and members of the board of directors for their loyal support and for the excellent work done by the chairmen of sections and their members. It is with much pleasure that I look back upon my visits with the sections in Washington, Arizona, Northern and Southern California, Chicago, Colorado, Western Pennsylvania and Utah before I assumed the office of president. During the last year I have much enjoyed meeting with the sections in Boston, Washington and New York. It is our duty to see that the achievement for 1932 be equal to that of the year that has just passed."

Pebble phosphate mines of Florida have been established from south of Hardee County to north of the Georgia state line, a distance of over 200 miles. Mining has been carried out on an ever-increasing scale since 1885, but phosphate deposits that can be mined on the economical standards of today, are confined in a roughly circular area about 30 miles in diameter, generally within Polk and Hillsborough Counties, in the central part of the State. The phosphate deposit, which is in the Bone Valley formation of Pliocene age, is covered by Pleistocene terrace deposits of unconsolidated quartz sand. The matrix is composed of approximately 1/3 clay slimes, 1/3 silica sand and 1/3 phosphate pebbles. The phosphate usually occurs as rounded pebbles, ranging in size from about 1 in. down to approximately 400 mesh. The phosphate may vary from well-defined hard pebbles to soft weathered rock. The color and character of the phosphate will range from smooth buff pebbles to black and white "salt-and- pepper rock." The screen size distribution varies considerably between locations; the recoverable phosphate may extend down to the 400-mesh size in some areas, while in others the phosphate may cut off sharply at about 35 mesh.

JOHN MARBLE, mining engineer, coal operator, philanthropist, member of the Institute since 1879, vice-president in 1903-04, has been paid the well deserved tribute of Honorary Membership. The presentation of the diploma was made at a luncheon in New York on Feb. 13, the citation reading: "In recognition of his work as an engineer and administrator of mines and his services to mining engineering education." Within the last month Lafayette University dedicated the new John Markle Mining Engineering Building, the gift of the eminent alumnus for whom it is named. In addition, Mr. Markle has contributed a maintenance fund for the carrying out of far-reaching plans for improving the mining courses to be given at the Institution. One of his theories is that quality rather than quantity of engineering graduates is the need of the profession. John Markle was born in Hazleton, Pa., in 1858. He received his degree of M. E. at Lafayette in 1880, and married Mary Estelle Robinson in New York City in 1884. Since 1880 he has been associated continuously with the firm of G. B. Markle & Co., and its successor companies. He has also been an official of numerous other important companies, although he is now retired from active business life.

Illustrated guidebooks treating in a popular descriptive way of the geology and other features of the Western United States have been issued by the U. S. Geological Survey. They will be of much interest to mem¬bers in connection with the Arizona Meeting of the Institute and espe¬cially the guidebook of the Santa Fe Route, with side trips to the Grand Canyon, containing as it does relief maps, topographical and geological maps, covering the entire route of the railroad, illustrations from photo¬graphs and other interesting descriptions of this great country. The method of treatment is adapted to the lay-reader, although it includes much valuable and interesting technical information concerning the geographical and other features. The books are well indexed. These volumes sell for 50 c. each and may be obtained from the Superintendent of Documents, Washington, D. C. These guidebooks originally sold for $1 each, but the reprint edition has been reduced to 50 c. A list of the different guidebooks follows: Bulletin 611. The flotation chemistry of the commercial INCO matte separation process was investigated. The slow cooling of Bessemer converter matte forms discrete phases of Cu2S and Ni3S2 and a Cu-Ni alloy. After magnetically removing the alloy, the Cu2S and Ni3S2 are separated by flotation at pH 12.4 (saturated lime) using diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother. DPG has been used exclusively in this flotation process because of its unusual selectivity for copper minerals. The surface product resulting from chemisorption of DPG onto theCu2S was identified as the double salt CU(DPG)2SO4.CU(DPG)2(OH)2. The adsorption followed Langmuir behaviour up to a monolayer coverage. In the absence of DPG, the rapid adsorption of oxygen by Cu2S in flotation pulps was observed. The surface product was identified as the insoluble basic copper sulfate CuS04.3Cu(0H)2 with the production of sulfate ion. In the presence of DPG, the oxidation reaction appears to be suppressed. The frothing properties of DPG and commercial frothers were compared. DPG is not a powerful frother. Batch flotation tests confirmed that DPG is a highly selective collector when compared to most sulfhydryl collectors.

The dissolution kinetics of type 304 stainless steel in the Bi-Sn eutectic alloy have been investigated under the well-defined hydrodynamic conditions produced by the rotating-disc sample geometry. In addition, the mutual solubilities of iron, chromium, nickel, and manganese from 304 stainless steel in the eutectic alloy were determined over the temperature range 450" to 985°C. The convective -diffusion model for mass transport from a rotating disc was used to interpret the experinlental dissolution data. The dissolution process was found to be liquid-diffusion-controlled under specific conditions of temperature and Reynolds number. Liquid penetration into the 304 stainless steel resulted in a reduction of the di,ffusion-controlled mass flux and thus precluded the calculation of the diffusion coeficients of the four components from 304 stainless steel in the Bi-Sn eutectic alloy. The convective-diffusion model for diffusional limitations of electrode reactions and mass transport at the tationssurface of a rotating disc set forth by Levich 1,2 has found wide applicability in the investigation of electrochemical and dissolution phenomena in aqueous systems. Riddiford 3 and Rosner have reviewed the model and also include numerous references on work of this nature. More recently the rotating-disc system has been applied to the investigation of hetereogeneous reactions in liquid-metal systems. Shurygin and Kryuk 5 have measured the dissolution rates of carbon discs in molten Fe-C, Fe-Si, Fe-P, and Fe-Ni alloys. Shurygin and shantarin6 also studied the dissolution kinetics of iron, molybdenum, chromium, and tungsten, and the carbides of chromium and tungsten in Fe-C solutions with a rotating-disc sample geometry. In these systems it was possible to distinguish between diffusion and reaction control mainly through experimental confirmation of the velocity dependence of the dissolution rate predicted by the model. However in the absence of dependable solubility data and the virtual lack of diffusion data in these systems, a quantitative check of the magnitude and the temperature dependence of the rate was not possible. In many instances, estimates of the activation energy for solute diffusion and the diffusion coefficient based upon the experimental dissolution data are not credible. A recent study by this author7 has resulted in a critical test of the model in a liquid-metal system. The solution rates of tantalum discs in liquid tin were measured over a wide range of temperature and velocity conditions. In addition, the solubility and diffusion coefficient of tantalum in liquid tin were determined as a function of temperature. The latter data were used with the model to predict both the magnitude and the temperature dependence of the dissolution flux. In that work it was also deemed necessary to reevaluate the solution to the convective diffusion equation to incorporate the effect of the lower range of Schmidt numbers encountered in liquid-metal systems. Good agreement between the model and the experimental dissolution data in the region of diffusion control was obtained in the Ta-Sn system. The Bi-Sn eutectic alloy is used as a seal between the reactor head and the reactor vessel in the Experimental Breeder Reactor-11. The alloy is fused periodically prior to fuel-handling operations. In that connection, it was necessary to investigate the compatibility of the liquid alloy with the type 304 stainless-steel containment material. The results of a rotating-disc study in this multicomponent system are presented. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The 5.08-cm-diam discs were machined from 0.317-cm-thick plate. Chemical analysis information for the type 304 SS material is given in Table I. The discs were ground flat on metallographic paper and given a final polish on Linde B abrasive. A thin support rod was threaded into the disc and the region around the threads was fused under an inert gas. The support rod was fitted with a quartz protection tube and then was attached to a supporting shaft which passed through a rotary push-pull vacuum seal. The disc and supporting shafts were dynamically balanced prior to insertion into the furnace tube. The apparatus is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The 58 pct Bi-42 pct Sn eutectic alloy melts were prepared from 99.995 pct pure Bi and Sn by fusing the components in a 7-cm-ID Pyrex crucible. The system in which the melts were made was evacuated to a pressure of 1 x 10-6 Torr and back-filled with purified argon several times before melting the charge. HEALTH and safety in the mining and allied industries of the United States have unquestionably been progressing, particularly during the past three or four years, even though the progress has been anything but great in some branches of these industries. Statistical data to support this statement are readily available as to safety, but similar health data are unfortunately not available. In coal mining the rate of occurrence of fatal accidents per million tons of coal produced for the ten-year period 1911.20 inclusive was 4.27; this rate was 3.84 in 1930, .3.31 in 1931, 3.36 in 1932, and 2.69 (tentative) in 1933. In metal mining, the-rate of occurrence of fatal and- non-fatal injuries per .thousand 300-day workers (calculated) was 224.36 for- the same ten-year period. This fell slowly until after 1929 when it was 203.14, dropping to 170.78 in 1930, to 142.09 in 1931, to 138.46 in 1932, and to 155.13 in 1933. Here, again,-the real progress began in 1931 though the rate in 1930 was not particularly bad.
