LITERATURE data1'3 have suggested that the resolved shear stress necessary to initiate slip in a particular slip system in tungsten single crystals is strongly dependent on the tensile orientation of the crystals. This orientation dependence is contrary to the critical resolved shear stress criterion. Because the Schmid factors for slip on particular {110}( I l l), {112}(Ill), or {123}(111) slip systems in a (100) oriented tungsten crystal are virtually identical to the respective Schmid factors for a (110) oriented crystal, slip should initiate on the same system in both orientations, independent of the values of the critical resolved shear stresses. Thus, it would be expected that, for a critical resolved shear stress model to hold, the proportional-limit stress for these two orientations must be similar. The expectation of similar proportional -limit stresses has not been borne out by reported experimental observations. Rose et nl.' reported that the proportional-limit stress for crystals near the (110) orientation was 92,000 psi, approximately three times that of (100) oriented crystals (31,000 psi). Garlick and probst2 reported greater than a fourfold difference. Most recently, Beardmore and ~ull~ examined tungsten crystals with orientations along the edge of the standard stereographic triangle and showed a gradual increase in proportional-limit stress from 28,000 psi for the (100) orientation to 93,000 psi for the (110) orientation. Again, the difference was more than threefold. As has been emphasized by these investigators, the apparent gross variation of proportional-limit stress with orientation precludes any meaningful analysis of slip mechanics using a simple critical resolved shear stress relation. The purpose of the present communication is to report that, by use of refined strain-measuring techniques, the proportional-limit stresses for the (100) and (110) orientations are quite similar. Obviously, to determine accurately the value of the proportional-limit stress, which is by definition the stress at which nonlinear stress-strain behavior first occurs, the method of measuring strain must be capable of high accuracy. The investigators cited used as the measured elongation the crosshead displacement of the tensile machine. This method, however, introduces extraneous strain contributions from the load train. Because these extraneous contributions are considerable in the initial portions of loading (as has been well-documented in the literature) the proportional-limit stress measurement, dependent on the deviation of a line from linearity, can be significantly affected. During the course of a recent study, room-temperature strain was measured directly on several (100)-and (110)-oriented tensile specimens axially oriented within 5 deg of the desired direction. Each specimen was fitted with two foil strain gages mounted on opposite sides of the 0.08-in.-diam reduced section. The tensile specimens were loaded at a crosshead speed of 0.01 in. per min on an Instron Universal Testing Machine. Strain was monitored through an external bridge circuit in which the specimen strain gages comprised two arms. The bridge output was recorded against the applied load. A strain of 2 x 10"" could be readily detected by this method. Some specimens were subjected to conventional loading while the load for others was cycled between zero and continually increasing values until the first deviation from linearity was observed. The results of these methods were similar, and the stress at which nonlinear behavior occurred was considered the proportional-limit stress. The proportional-limit stresses measured in this study are approximately 5000 and 6500 psi for the ( 100) - and ( 110) -oriented crystals, respectively, a range of values almost a magnitude less than those reported previously. Representative curves are presented in Fig. 1. Because of the nature of the measurements made, the point of departure of a line from linearity is often debatable. While the load-strain curve for the (100) -oriented crystals made a relatively abrupt deviation from linearity, the curve for the (110) -oriented crystal was more gradual, so that the actual point of tangency may be at a lower load than reported. DEFINITE data on the amplitude and effect of ground movement in specific mineral formations, caused by various methods used in the mining of ores, coal, and nonmetals, or in the extraction through wells of petroleum, sulphur, and soluble salts, are increasingly needed because of legal liabilities from damage to overlying or adjacent properties, and growing concern as to the conservation of national mineral resources. Not since the committee was established in 1923 has it been so difficult to get technical papers giving ground movement and subsidence data from specific mine operators. The reasons given, as above indicated, are pending or threatening lawsuits. There are three major objectives in ground movement and subsidence studies : (1) Maximum recovery of a mineral resource. (2) Minimizing damage to surface structures, highways, railroads, and agricultural lands caused by caving or subsidence, which may in some situations, as along the Gulf of Mexico shore, cause flooding by surface waters. (3) Lessening damage to overlying or adjacent mineral by back-filling of mine excavations as completely as possible.

Do not write until you have something to say. Think first; then write. In order to be understood, you must know what you wish to say. Clear writing is the consequence of clear thinking. Therefore consider your subject well before you begin to write; ruminate on it; marshal the salient facts in your mind; saturate yourself with the ideas you wish to express and with cognate ideas; then express yourself deliberately. If you are bubbling over with your subject the words will come, but you might as well expect to sail without a breeze as hope to give life to words without the living thought. Here I may advert to the fact that among the uneducated it is a common expectation to acquire the knack of writing without taking the trouble to study the art of literature. I overheard a woman in a suburban train remark to her neighbor: "I'd like to be able to write well without stopping to think about it". She was one of many that would like to do a thing well without the trouble of thinking; but it cannot be done in respect of anything to which thought is essential. The possession of a good voice does not justify a person in expecting to sing successfully to a large audience; before singing in public one has to master the technique of singing; one has to learn first how to breathe properly, how to enunciate, and many other things. The successful singer is an artist, not a megaphone. Most of us would regard a man or a woman without any training in the art of singing as a fool or an impostor if he or she were to give a public concert, yet we do not recognize the equal foolishness and imposture of persons that write books before they have studied the technique of writing. PRIMITIVE man supplied his wants as they arose; as he became more civilized he anticipated them by producing more regularly and storing the products for future use. This tended to cheapen' production and prevent ' violent fluctuations and therefore tended to increase consumption. In order to anticipate our wants, we must know what these wants will be, and this can be .determined only by statistics. 'While we have made great progress in gathering statistics, they are still far from what they should be; especially metal statistics. We determine fairly, well the amount produced, but this does not answer all inquiries because of the erratic conditions of mining, it is necessary to carry larger stocks of metals than of most other articles; moreover, as metals are more or less durable, it is difficult to determine the actual consumption. We often count under consumption what is being produced and sold, while the actual consumption is what is being worn out.

JUST four years ago, in March, 1930, Gilbert LaBine discovered the rich deposit of pitchblende and silver ore on the east shore of Great Bear Lake, 30 -miles south of the Arctic Circle, which brought a new mining district into being. His original discovery is now the property of Eldorado Gold Mines, Ltd., but other groups have been active. Vigorous prospecting has outlined a mineralized zone that extends at least 100 miles from north to south. In this area silver discoveries have been relatively common; pitchblende, as might be expected, has been harder to find, though a deposit has been located this spring nearly 100 miles south of Eldorado that may be of great importance.

The comparison of actual energy of comminution with theoretical surface energy presents a wide gap. On the other hand, Solid State Theory presents a viewpoint that places actual energy of breakage in understandable relationship with the theoretical strength of materials. Therefore the physical background of comminution theory favors Kick's Law. A11 discussions of comminution theory appear farfetched when comparison is made of the actual energy of crushing with the energy input called for by thermodynamic theory. Quoting Taggart:' "The work required to crush halite was of the general order of 0.10 kg cm per sq cm of new surface produced (based on air percolation) whereas the theoretical energy of this new surface, based on thermodynamic calculation by a number of investigators is 1 x 10'4 kg cm per sq cm or the work expended was 1000 times the new surface energy — an indicated crushing efficiency of 0.10 pct." It is frustrating to probe into comminution theory with the prospect that the energy one is measuring is 99.9 pct waste energy. Do the laws of comminution deal with energy consumed by mineral breakage or with waste heat energy? There seems to be something wrong. Solid State Theory may provide the answer. The following statement is particularly apt to the situation: "The fundamental fact about metals and indeed all materials, is that they are much weaker than they should be. By this, we mean that if the stress required to cause a given plane of atoms to slip past a neighboring plane is calculated from basic atomic and Solid State Theory, the resulting number is some 1000 times too large to be accounted for by errors in approximations or assumptions. We know now that this is due to dislocations, and we even have a fair understanding of the details of the process by which dislocations make a crystal weak. An intriguing possibility which suggests itself, results from the discovery of very minute metallic crystals which are apparently free of dislocations and which have a strength approaching the ideal value for a perfect crystal." Here we have an extraordinary reversal of the situation. The actual energy for breakage is only one-thousandth the theoretical instead of 1000 times as given by Taggart. But the theoretical energy presented by Solid State Theory is the binding energy between atoms (or ions) in a crystal lattice. This is the kind of energy envisaged by Kick's law. The surface energy or the other hand corresponds to Rittinger's law. Comparison of theoretical with actual, on the basis of surface or on the basis of Rittinger's law, seems to present an absurdity; yet Rittinger's law is confirmed by an impressive array of experimental evidence. Comparison of theoretical and actual on the basis of Solid State Theory or, in other words, on the basis of Kick's law seems reasonable; yet there is not a scrap of evidence to verify Kick's law. The situation appears paradoxical, but the developments in the next section of this paper show that the paradox is a hint to a strange turn of events. ENERGY-WEIGHT FRACTION FUNCTION charles3 has presented a final equation showing the relation of energy consumed in comminution to size of product n{-1) a-n + 1 E is energy, C is proportionality constant, a and n are constants and k is the coarsest size in the ground product (size modulus). In the course of study of a large amount of experimental evidence, Charles discovered that in the general case, a-n + 1 approximated zero. For some reason, a and n differed only by unity. But if a—n + 1 = 0 within experimental error, then it is obvious that Eq. 1 states that it requires an infinite amount of energy to grind any sample to any size. This is a case where nature gives an absurd answer to a man-made mathematical equation, hence something is wrong with the equation. An adjustment must be made to fit the equation with experience. MILLING called for four sessions and a luncheon and covered broad ranges from speculative theory to basic practice, and from coal to gold. An attractive and profitable feature was the "get-together" of "coal preparers" and "ore dressers" for mutual discussion of their common problems. The first event was the Milling Luncheon in the Engi¬neers' Club on Monday. A concentrated group of high¬grade appeared and many matters were discussed, but only two called for official action: The meeting unanimously recommended the use of the Tyler standard sieve scale as against any new scale, and also the adoption of micron designation for fine particles in place of decimals of an inch or millimeter, or theoretical mesh size. The real sessions began on Monday afternoon with a menu of Mineral Physics for the ore dresser, metallurgist, geologist, physicist, et al. Four papers by the staff of the U. S. Bureau of Mines dealt with the chemical and physical aspects of mineral structure as revealed by the first two years of research to date. A fifth paper by Dr. M. J. Buerger correlated to the foregoing the knowledge of "The Lineage Structure of Crystals" and finally a sixth paper was a progress report of further developments of the last year in explosive shattering of minerals by the U. S. Bureau of Mines.

In a recent technical note, Owen Thornton&apos; suggests that wetting liquid relative permeability may be derived from the relationship: where Pd/Pc is the ratio of displacement pressure to capillary pressure at the wetting liquid satdration Sw, and I is the resistivity index at this saturation. Thornton shows that this expression gives values for relative permeability in good agreement with those experimentally determined by Leverett. We have recently developed another expression for krw which seems preferable to Equation 1 since it requires fewer experimental data for its verification. This equation may be derived in the following manner. Making use of the analogy between mass transfer of fluid in a porous medium and electrical conductivity through the fluid in the same medium, we can postulate a hydraulic formation resistivity factor analogous to an electrical formation resistivity factor. From Poiseuille&apos;s Law the resistivity to flow in a tube of radius R is of the form 8u/R², where is the viscosity of the fluid. Similarly7 the resistivity to flow in a porous medium of the same dimensions as the tube is given by D&apos;Arcy&apos;s Law as where k is the permeability of the medium. The hydraulic formation resistivity factor, Ff, is thus the quotient of these two resistivities, or: But permeability is defined by the KO-zeny equation as: where: r is the average pore radius of the porous medium, L. is the average tortuous length of the average pore, + is the porosity, and L is the bed length. This gives Fr as a function of the (La/L) .-.-.tortuosity ratio and porosity, or in explicit form: where: T = (La/L)&apos;, and N is the number of pores of radius, r, which will be found in any cross sectional area, x R&apos;. Moreover, other instances can be cited where we find that neither Equation 1 nor Equa tion 2 is checked by experimental data. The work of Botset&apos; on the Nichols Buff sandstone and Morse et a1 on oil wetted Bradford sandstone are such instances. A reason for these discrepancies may lie in the fact that if both Equations 1 and 2 are presumed always to give accurate values for krw, it follows that PC = Pd/Sw". Such an expression, it is well known, is too simple to describe accurately the capillary pressure behavior of all porous media. However, it is believed that a particular advantage resides on the use of Equation 2, since it is not dependent for its utility on a knowledge of the capillary pressures obtaining in dynamic flow svsterns. The increasing need for materials capable of withstanding higher operating temperatures for various applications such as gas turbine blading and other parts, rocket nozzles, and many industrial applications, has brought consideration of cemented carbide compositions. The well known usefulness of cemented carbides as tool materials is attributable to their ability to retain their strength and hardness at much higher temperatures than even complex alloys. However, it has been found that the temperatures encountered in cutting operations do not approach by several hundred degrees1 those involved in the applications mentioned above where the interest is in materials possessing strength and resistance to oxidation at temperatures of 1800°F and above. At these latter temperatures, the tool type compositions which are made up essentially of tungsten carbide are found to oxidize very rapidly and to produce oxidation products of a character which offer no protection to the remaining body. As a further consideration, the density of the tungsten carbide type compositions is high, from about 8.0 to 15.0. The refractory metal carbides as a class are the highest melting materials known as shown by Table 1 which summarizes the available data from the literature for the carbides of the elements which are sufficiently available for consideration for these uses. The density is also included in the table, since as mentioned above it is an important consideration in many of the applications for which the materials would be considered. It has been established that in the tool compositions the mechanism of sintering with cobalt is such as to result in a continuous carbide skeleton and that the properties of the sintered composition are thus essen- tially those of the carbide.2 On the hypothesis that this mechanism holds to a greater or less degree in cementing most of the refractory metal carbides with an auxiliary metal, it appears from Table 1 that titanium carbide compositions would offer possibilities for a high temperature material. Titanium carbide has extensive use for supplementing the properties of tungsten carbide in tool compositions. Although the literature contains several references to compositions containing only titanium carbide with an auxiliary metal,3,4,5,6 it may be inferred from the meager data that such compositions were deficient in strength and were considered to have poor oxidation resistance.7 Kieffer, for instance, reports the transverse rupture strength of a hot pressed TiC composition at 100,000 psi as compared to up to 350,000 psi for WC compositions. The work described herein was undertaken to determine the properties of compositions consisting of titanium carbide and an auxiliary metal and to improve the oxidation resistance of such compositions. It appeared possible that the inclusion of one or more other carbides with titanium carbide might improve the oxidation resistance and also that this might be more desirable than other means from the point of view of maintaining the highest possible softening point. Consideration of the available carbides in Table 1 suggests tantalum and columbium carbides because of their high melting points and general refractoriness. The work on improving oxidation resistance was concentrated on the addition of tantalum carbide or mixtures of tantalum and columbium carbide. The auxiliary metals used included cobalt, nickel and iron. It was also desired to learn the general physical properties of these compositions. Experimental Procedure The compositions used in this study were made by the usual powder metallurgy procedure applicable to cemented tungsten carbide compositions. The powdered carbide or carbides and auxiliary metal were milled together out of contact with air. In some cases cemented tungsten carbide balls and in other instances steel balls were used to eliminate any effect of tungsten carbide contamination. A temporary binder, paraffin, was then included in the mix and slugs or ingots were pressed with care to obtain as uniform pressing as possible. The ingots were presintered and the various shapes of test specimens were formed by machining, making the proper allowance for shrinkage during sintering. Thereafter the shapes were sintered in vacuum at temperatures of from 2800 to 3500°F. Final grinding to size was carried out by diamond wheels under coolant. The titanium carbide used contained a minimum of 19.50 pet total carbon and a total of 0.50 pet metallic impurities as indicated by chemical and spectrographic analysis. The 3-parameter equation* was introduced1 as having the necessary form and flexibility for describing the major features of size distribution curves. Also, Eq. 1 was shown to contain most of the widely used 2-parameter equations as special cases. Special methods are necessary in order to determine the parameters of 3-parameter equations by graphical means. The procedure given previously required double graphical interpolation followed by regraphing the interpolated data. The theoretical basis of the method was a difference equation eliminating y. Several other methods for obtaining the parameters have been under development and one method appears to overcome the disadvantages of the earlier method and satisfies several procedural requirements. The points in favor of the new method as compared to the earlier method are as follows: 1. Estimation of the quality of fit is direct, and is in fact an essential part of the procedure. 2. The data is plotted directly without the necessity of interpolation from a graph. 3. The method makes use of Rosin-Rammler2 paper which because of expanded scaling in the coarse sizes leads to improved accuracy1 as compared with the log-log plot for the Gates3-Gaudin4-Schubann5 representation. 4. There is a gain over the earlier method in overall accuracy and in simplicity.

OBSERVATION of the clinkering action of coal from the Castle Gate D seam in underfeed stokers over a period of years has given rise to the present investigation of the effect of bony coal on clinkering. Some very costly examples of slagging clinkers in particular cases have been of especial interest to the authors. In such cases coal analyses and ash-softening and fluid temperatures have been found of little value. In general, it was noted that slagging was accompanied by a somewhat higher ash content of the stoker slack, and the suspicion naturally arose that foreign matter was the troublemaker. One would naturally suspect bony coal and rock impurities because of their occurrence and prevalence within the seam and the relative absence of sulphur or other impurities in the coal mined. The test results given herein indicate that the concentration of the bony coal and rock impurities in the coal determines the clinkering tendencies of the ash during combustion. CASTLE GATE D SEAM Extending from the Utah-Colorado line near Grand Junction, Colo., westward to Greenriver, Utah and thence in semi-circular form north and westward to Castle Gate, and from there southward to Mt. Hilgard in central Utah, is a line of nearly perpendicular cliffs, composed of interbedded massive sandstone and shales, making up the coal-bearing horizon of the Mesaverde formation of Upper Cretaceous age. The cliffs face roughly concentrically toward the south and southeast and the strata, with conformably enclosed coal beds, gently dip away from the face of the cliffs and at right angles to their front line. Back of these cliffs the mountain masses rise to an altitude of from 8000 to 10,000 ft. above sea level. Stretching away from their foot is a great shale plain, on which the towns are situated and over which the railroad lines and highways run. The Castle Gate mines enter the coal beds at their outcrop; the workings extending within a particular coal bed away from the outcrop and under the mountain mass back from the cliff line (Fig. 1). Throughout the Mesaverde formation in the Castle Gate general area, there are from two to five workable coal beds. Usually not all of these are coincidentally of workable size and merchantable quality throughout any given large tract. In the Castle Gate mine area, the base of the Mesaverde horizon and coal measures is marked by a massive, cliffmaking, gray sandstone bed 6o to 8o ft. thick. Locally this is referred to as the "Castle Gate sandstone floor." Frank R. Clark, in U. S. Geol. Survey Bull. 793, designates it as the "Aberdeen sandstone." IN the course of study of the heat-treatment of low-alloy steels, the behavior of alloy carbides at subcritical temperatures was found to vary from that indicated by published investigations. In order to establish the ranges of formation of carbides in low-chromium steels, a series of steels containing up to 0.60 per cent carbon and 7.5 per cent chromium has been investigated with respect to the type of carbide formed after quenching and tempering at sub-critical temperatures. The types of carbide formed as products of austenite transformation to pearlitic and pseudomartensitic structures have also been determined. There have been numerous investigations of the carbides in chromium steels and diagrams of the iron-chromium-carbon system.&apos; Westgren, Phragrnén and Ne-gresco2 identified the following carbides in chromium steels: Cementitc............ Fe3C (containing up to about 15 per cent Cr) Trigonal carbide...... Cr7C3 (containing up to about 55 per cent Fe) Cubic carbide........ Cr4C (or Cr23C6) (con- . taining up to about 25 per cent Fe) Orthorhombic carbide , cr3c2 (containing only a few per cent Fe) The most complete information on the iron-chromium-carbon system was supplied by Tofaute, Sponheuer and Bennek3 and by Tofaute, Küttner and Büttinghaus,4 By means of dilatometric and microscopic stzdies, sections of the diagram were established. This diagram showed the presence of the special carbide CI7C3 in steels containing about 2.5 per cent to 12 per cent chromium in low-carbon steels and from about 5 to 20 per cent chromium in I per cent carbon alloys from A1 to room temperature. The present investigation has shown that a carbide inversion from Fe3C to Cr7C3 occurs in chromium steels containing more than about I per cent chromium after hardening and tempering at subcritical temperatures above about 500°C. The type of carbide observed to be more stable in quenched and tempered specimens was also found to be produced by direct austenite transformation in corresponding ranges of temperature and composition. Experimental Procedure The steels used in these experiments were made in magnesia-lined crucibles in high-frequency furnaces and were poured into 2-in. ingots. The ingots were forged into I-in. round bars, and all heat-treatments were conducted on specimens of this section size. Sections of the bar stock 8 in. long were hardened in air, oil or water, depending on the composition, after heating to a temperature sufficiently high to dissolve the carbides. The low-carbon and low-chromium steels were not entirely martensitic after quenching, and contained some ferrite and pseudomartensite. No pearlite was observed in the microstructures after quenching. IN 1920 the Minnesota Tax Commission estimated a reserve of 1,341,674,538 long tons of iron ore in Minnesota, the Michigan State Tax Commission report showed 199,092,855 long tons in reserve in that state, and the Wisconsin Geological Survey set the Wisconsin reserves at 21,500,000 long tons. The total reserve that year for the Lake Superior District amounted to 1,562,267,393 long tons. Ten years later the reserves of iron ore in these same districts were Minnesota 1,235,227,510, Michigan 168,349,823, and Wisconsin 23,000,000, or a total of 1,426,577,333 long tons. The decrease in ore reserves in this ten-year period was 135,690,060 long tons, but the shipments were 520,746,975 long tons. In other words, the ten-year depletion in reserves was only 8.68 per cent. If similar conditions carry into the future this calculation would indicate a life for the ore reserves of the Lake Superior region of over 100 years.

Preliminary research has identified several organic and aqueous solutions that are effective absorbents for SO, from simulated smelter gas containing 0.3 to 2% SO2. These SO2 loaded solutions are also compatible to the reaction of H2S and SO2 to precipitate a readily filtered elemental sulfur. The economic removal of SO2 and production of elemental sulfur from stack gases discharged by base- metal smelters is a challenging goal. The magnitude of this task is illustrated by the estimate that about 3.5 million tons of SO2 are discharged to the atmosphere by smelters annually in the U.S. The SO2 concentration of the gases ranges from about 0.5 to more than 3%. As the sulfur content of SO2 is 50% a potential production of 1,750,000 tons of sulfur per year is indicated.

In a previous paper&apos; analyses were given describing solute redistribution in dendritic solidification. The analyses were undertaken primarily to permit prediction of "severity of microsegregation" in a casting or ingot after solidification and cooling to room temperature, but can also be used to predict "local fraction solid&apos; as a function of temperature in the solidifying alloy. Numerical results were given for Al-Cu alloys. The aims of this paper are to examine the validity of some of the assumptions of that analysis, and to compare predictions of the theory with experiments. All experiments reported are on Al-Cu alloys, the bulk on Al-4.5 pct Cu alloy. EXPERIMENTS Experiments conducted were on small ingots, 41/2 in. in diam by about 10 in. high. solidified in a controlled thermal environment (i.e., in a resistance-heated, re-circulating air furnace, whose temperature could be controlled to 1°C). In one series of experiments, the ingots were solidified very slowly (solidification time was varied from 8 to 1000 hr) and at constant rate of heat extraction. In a second series of experiments the ingots were solidified ( &apos;unidirectionally". Fig. 1 is a sketch of the method of making the two different types of ingots. The unidirectionally solidified ingots were fully columnar, and the slowly solidified ingots had equiaxed structures, Fig. 2. In making the slowly solidified ingots, the mold employed was carbon steel, coated with inert refractory. Typically the mold and its environment were heated to 700°C. The molten alloy was then poured into the mold and the temperature of the system equilibrated above the liquidus. The environment of the mold was next cooled with a controller responding to a differential thermocouple that measured the difference between the temperature of the melt and the temperature of the mold environment. The differential thermocouple consisted of one chromel-alumel junction in the melt connected in opposition with a second junction in the furnace. The potential across the differential thermocouple was input to the controller which acted to keep this potential at a set. constant value; hence the temperature difference between the two junctions was maintained nearly constant. Major resistance to heat flow in the above apparatus was between the metal surface and the furnace atmosphere, not in the metal itself. By maintaining a constant temperature difference between the metal and the furnace atmosphere, the controller maintained an essentially constant rate of heat extraction during solidification, regardless of amount of heat released by the metal per unit temperature change. When the metal temperature dropped just below the eutectic temperature. the ingot was removed from the furnace and water-quenched. The unidirectionally solidified ingots were cast in a similar mold to the foregoing except that provision was made to extract heat through the bottom face of the mold by passing air or water through the mold base, Fig. 1.
