Current research by the US Bureau of Mines to develop technology for improving efficiency and productivity in metal/nonmetal mines is described. The research program addresses a wide variety of problems associated with each of the major categories of mining: underground mining, surface mining, m situ mining, and premining investigations. An overview of the Bureau's research activities is given with emphasis on underground mining. In particular, two innovative and promising concepts currently under development are described: a unique shaft sinking system that uses an impact hammer for rock fragmentation, and a low-profile portable crusher for underground hard-rock applications.

The Parachute Creek member of the Green River formation in the Piceance Basin, Colorado, contains vast reserves of oil shale, nahcolite, dawsonite, and other accessory minerals. The dry alkali process of sulfur dioxide removal using nahcolite (naturally occurring sodium bicarbonate) has great potential. A room and pillar mining scheme has been designed to extract a nahcolite zone occurring at a depth of 472 m, from the lease application area of the Yankee Gulch joint venture. Geotechnical parameters affecting mine design will be discussed. A preliminary development plan for mining at the rate of 1000 t/d will be described in detail.

HOSTS of friends will rejoice that T. A. Rickard has been given honorary membership in the Institute. It might well have been done long ago, since, when one reviews distinguished services rendered by individuals to our organization and our profession, it is at once apparent that his name ranks high and that he has merited this distinction for more than three decades. Our by-laws restrict this list to twenty names; "T.A." becomes the sixteenth living member. Young engineers should particularly be pleased; Mr. Rickard has had a career rich in human interest, and full of useful suggestions to the younger men; he has given them good advice and set them a notable example; he, more than anyone else, has shown them how technical writing can be clear and concise; he has inspired youngsters to do their best; he has been their friend. No one has more first-hand knowledge of these facts than the writer of this appreciation:

Mechanical twins were produced in electron-beam melted columbium by high-speed impact at room temperature and by slow or fast compression at -196°C. The composition plane of the twins was { 112} and the shear direction was <111>. Notches in the twin bands often corresponded to traces of {110) of the matrix and appeared to be untwinned regions. Markings within the twin bands were interpreted as resulting from {110} slip in the twins. THERE has been much work in recent years concerning plastic deformation by glide, and the dislocation theory relating to glide has reached a relatively high degree of development. On the other hand, there have been fewer studies of deformation by mechanical twinning, and understanding of this process is far from satisfactory. This method of deformation is of interest for at least two reasons. First, it provides a mechanism in addition to glide for the relief of stresses, and, in the bcc and hexagonal close-packed metals may result in significant amounts of plastic flow. Secondly, there is the possibility that twins may act as barriers for dislocation movement, resulting in pile-ups which could nucleate cracks. As might be expected, the bulk of the literature on mechanical twinning in the bcc metals is concerned with iron. A good summary of the work done prior to 1954 is contained in the book by all.&apos; Recently the refractory bcc metals have become increasingly important. Limited studies have shown that tantalum,2,3 molybdenum,4,5 vanadium,6,7 tungsten,&apos; and columbium9-11 deform by mechanical twinning under some conditions. Alloys of molybdenum with rhenium and tungsten with rhenium show extensive deformation by twinning at room temperature.I2-l4 Most of these studies have dealt primarily with mechanical properties at low temperatures or have shown the existence of twins, and there is only a small amount of information concerning the conditions under which they form. The subject of the present paper is the formation of twins under stress in columbium with a consideration of their morphology. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material used for these studies was taken from an ingot of columbium which had been melted twice by the electron-be am-method. The analysis of the ingot was (in ppm): B < 1, C = 10, Fe < 100, The cast ingot contained very large grains, and it was possible to obtain single-crystal prisms which measured from ¼ to 3/4 in. on a side. A few experiments were conducted on polycrystalline plate which was prepared by rolling material from the same ingot at room temperature and annealing at 1000 in a dynamic vacuum of 10-6 mm Hg. This gave a plate in which the grains had an average diameter of 3 mm. After the specimens were cut from the ingot, the six faces were metallographically polished and elec-tropolished to remove all traces of cold work. Most of the observations were made on the surfaces of the deformed specirllens without further treatment. Occasionally, etching after deformation was desirable. In these cases, an etchant of the composition 50 parts H2O, 5 parts HNO3 25 parts HF, and 10 parts H2SO4 was found to delineate the twins very well. Unless considerable care was taken to ensure the removal of all disturbed metal left by the mechanical polishing, etching failed to reveal many of the features discussed in this; paper. The specimen&apos;s were deformed either by impact or slow compression at 77°K (liquid-nitrogen coolant), 198°K (dry ice and acetone coolant), and 298°K. The impact load was delivered by a hammer except in one case where the load was delivered by a bullet. Slow compression was carried out on a hydraulic testing machine equipped with a chamber to hold the coolant. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS It has been generally believed that the conditions favoring the formation of deformation twins are large grains, low temperature, and impact loading. In fact, Barrett and Bakish2 found twins in tantalum only after impact deformation at 77°K, and Adams, Roberts, and Smallman10 observed twins in columbium only at 20 For these reasons, the initial experiments of this study used impact loading. Hammer blows caused many bands resembling twins in single crystals a.t 77" but not at 198°K. Only a few slip lines were observed on any of the single-crystal specimens of this study—essentially all the deformation occurred by twinning. The appearance of the twins on the as-deformed surface is shown in Fig. 1. Although both Figs. 1(a) and l(b) are photomicrographs of twins taken at the same magnification and from the same crystal, they are startlingly different in appearance. EVERYONE engaged in the teaching of mining engineering will, I suppose, agree that the most difficult subject to teach is "Mining Methods." One primary difficulty is that the students taking the course have either had no previous experience in mining, or else they have had; either seeming to be somewhat of a drawback. The students who are unfamiliar with mines find it difficult to visualize underground conditions, as described and illustrated with sketches and maps, while those who have had underground experience seem to &apos;find it difficult to visualize anything much different from that which they have already seen. This reminds one of the remark about the Presbyterian doctrine of predestination, to the effect that "you are damned ,if you do; and damned if you don&apos;t."

INTRODUCTION Additional work has been done on the CIP circuit at Creede, and a brief description of this work is presented in this paper. DREDGE The original dredge for the Bulldog was built by Al Hack, Inc. of Denver. The dredge cutter head is mounted on a boom made of 6-inch diameter pipe which is raised and lowered by a cable-pulley system. Maximum cutting depth is 8 feet. Slurry from the dredge flows through a floating 6-inch diameter pipe supported on 55-gallon drums which runs from the dredge to the shore and then to a trash screen and pumping system. See Figures 1 and 2. The cutter head, suction pump, winches for dredge movement, and all other operations are controlled from a small operations house located toward the rear of the dredge. All of the basic dredge equipment is mounted on a chassis about 8 ft x 16 ft in size. Additional buoyancy was originally provided by sealed 55-gallon drums supported along the sides of the chassis by a small wooden framework. Additional framework and barrels on the front of the chassis on either side of the cutter boom provided additional stability, particularly when digging in hard material. The dredge was quite stable, but two problems were apparent. For one, it could have been sunk by someone from the shore firing a rifle into all of the barrels. The Hobson uranium deposit is located in Karnes County, Texas, along the prominent south Texas uranium trend. The uranium mineralization occurs in the Deweesville Sandstone of the Whitsett Formation of the Eocene Jackson Group. The host rock is a friable, fine-grained, well-sorted, highly porous and permeable sandstone interpreted to be an ancient beach deposit. The sandstone contains significant volcanic constituents and ranges in composition from arkosic to tuffaceous. Locally, the host sandstone contains hard, dense opal cement. Bentonitic shales underlie and overlie the mineralized sandstone unit. Geometrically, the Hobson uranium-bearing zone resembles an elongated roll front type deposit. Chemical uranium values compared with gamma ray equivalent uranium values indicate that the uranium has been dissolved from the updip side and precipitated on the down- dip side of the roll front. Details of the uranium mineralization were studied using thin section microscopy, autoradiography, x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The uranium mineralization occurs in the pores of the sandstone, as grain coatings and as replacement of sand-size and smaller grains. It is commonly associated with pyrite and other opaque minerals. Other favored hosts for uranium (other than pore openings) appear to be clay aggregates, altered rock and glass fragments, and carbonaceous plant debris. Aggregates of coffinite were identified by XRD and SEM/EDS analyses. Some uranium mineralization also appears to be dispersed and is postulated to be adsorbed on the clay and carbonaceous matter.

THE experiments reported in this paper have been fruitful in disclosing the mechanism of the deformation of iron in compression. They have established the nature of "deformation bands," "etch bands," or "X-bands," that have been a recognized but little understood feature in the structure of cold-worked metals since the early days of metal-lography, and have shown the role of the bands in the development of preferred orientations by cold-working. The work has also shown the relation of the orientation of individual grains to the preferred orientation of the aggregate. Some of the methods previously used in the determination of the indices of slip planes and slip directions are shown to be untrustworthy in the presence of deformation bands. The conclusion is reached that many slip planes and slip directions must operate during each stage in the compression of a single crystal, and that theories failing to take account of this require revision. In conducting the experiments a method f compression has been used by which extreme reductions can easily be reached, even to the limit set by the metal&apos;s capacity to deform with-out fracture. The work is a portion of a research program on the plastic properties of iron and steel. It is being used as a foundation for studies of orienta-tions resulting from recrystallization and is being extended to other metals and other types of deformation.

ABOUT a year ago several carloads of magnetite ore from New York state were sent to the Mines Experiment Station at the University of Minnesota for grinding and concentration tests. The flowsheet used minus ½ -in. ore as feed to a 3 by 3-ft. overflow cylindrical ball mill operating at 37 r.p.m. in closed ciruit with a vibrating screen. The screen oversize was returned to the mill for further grinding and the screen undersize was concentrated magnetically. Several different screens, between 8 and 35 mesh, were used and it was desired to determine the capacity of the ball mill operating in closed circuit with each screen. From earlier tests using this flowsheet and equipment, it was known that when comparatively coarse screens were used it was necessary to increase the grinding dilution in the mill beyond that ordinarily used when grinding in closed circuit with classifiers. It was also known that after the circulating load had passed about zoo per cent of the original feed it tended to increase rapidly in amount, and grinding conditions appeared to become unstable. These conditions may be peculiar to this small ball mill but they were very marked in this series of tests. If conditions were not right, the mill would suddenly "go dead," and it was found desirable to operate so that the occasional rattle of balls against the lining of the mill could be detected. As the test proceeded, it was found that the cure for almost any difficulty that developed in the grinding circuit was to add more water to the mill feed. To begin with, the mill was operated at pulp densities of from 60 to 65 per cent solids but gradually it was found that with higher dilutions grinding conditions were more stable and the ball-mill power per ton of screen undersize decreased. Actually, the most satisfactory operating conditions were secured with a pulp density of about 40 per cent solids. The ore was hard but it was possible to grind ½ in. feed so that all would pass an 8-mesh screen with a power expenditure in the ball mill of less than 2 1/2 kw-hr. per ton and with a circulating load of less than 50 per cent. With so high a dilution in the feed to the mill, it was feared that steel wear would be very high. However, the mill was not noisy, and in order to find exactly the grinding conditions, a special test was made at the end of the main series of tests. After the mill had been in operation for several hours and grinding conditions had become balanced, the power to all the equipment was shut off at a given signal. The ball mill made about one revolution after the power was turned off, and just as soon as the mill stopped, a spout was placed at the discharge trunnion and all of the pulp that flowed out of the mill was caught in tanks. The manhole in the mill was then opened and the whole mill charge dumped into other tanks. Both of these products were weighed, dried, and weighed again. The balls were screened out and weighed, and the dry solids were sized. In this way it was possible to determine the nature of the pulp and the ore within the mill under actual grinding conditions.

LOUIS Buchman walks down the hall of Kennecott&apos;s Chrysler Building offices as if he belonged there, but it wasn&apos;t his setting of choice. The West has become his home, that and the scene of operations is there. When he was a child his family came to the United States from Latvia and settled in Michigan&apos;s Upper Peninsula where he went to school and on to Michigan College of Mines. Graduating with B.S. and E.M. degrees, he headed west in 1907 to the mining camp of Ophir, in the state where he spent the bulk of his career - Utah.

QUESTIONS raised during earlier investigations of the preferred orientation in titanium1 and zirco-nium sheet led to the examination of the rolling and annealing textures of beryllium and hafnium sheet. Since the c/a ratios are 1.568 and 1.584, less than that of ideal close packing, 1.633, it would be expected that the preferred orientations would be similar to those exhibited by zirconium and titanium. This was found to be true. However, in several regards the orientations observed for beryllium differed from those reported by Smigels-kas and Barrett4 and so are given here. The okientations for hafnium are presented since only the cold-rolling texture has been reported in the unclassified literature. The pole figures were determined by transmission using an X-ray spectrogoniometer with copper Ka radiation and the automatic pole-figure recorder designed by Geisler described previously.6 The intensity units in the pole figures in this case are only arbitrary since calibration against a random sample of the same material was not considered necessary for the original purpose of the examination. The beryllium sheet, cold-rolled from 0.036 in. to 0.006 in., a reduction of about 84 pct, exhibited a split texture with the [1010] direction in the rolling direction as shown in Fig. 1. The same specimen annealed in vacuo for 1 hr at 1000°C showed no change in orientation. These textures

THAT the path of brittle fracture in temper brit-tle steel differs from the path in unembrittled steel has been known for some years1 More recently it has been recognized that alloy steels, at least, display two forms of temper brittleness1 which may be called upper-nose and lower-nose. No experimental evidence has been published, however, to show that the two forms can be distinguished by simple inspection of brittle fractures. Fig. 1 is a photograph of the fractured surface of a V-notch Charpy specimen of SAE 3140 steel in which temper brittleness developed during heat treatment in the lower-nose temperature range.&apos; The steel was austenitized 1 hr at 900°, tempered 1 hr at 675", and embrittled 48 hr at 500°C, with water-quenching after each treatment. The temperature of transition from ductile to brittle fracture in the Charpy test was + 2°C (criterion of transition: 100 pet fibrous). The hardness was Re 25; the austenite grain size ASTM 8. This specimen was broken at 150°C in the standard Charpy test and absorbed 6.6 ft-lb; its fracture was rated 0 pet fibrous. Fig. 1 shows that the fracture appeared rough to the naked eye. The New Jersey Zinc Co. successfully holed through a 2 ½ -mile haulage tunnel connecting its new Ivanhoe shaft with the Van Mater Shaft at Austinville, Va. This 8 x 10-ft cross-section tunnel was driven from both ends and met at a point approximately a mile from one shaft and a mile and a half from the other. In order to make certain that the faces met accurately on line and grade it was necessary to refine conventional mine surveying practices. The mines that are serviced by these shafts are located in the southwestern part of Virginia approximately midway between Roanoke and Bristol at the west foot of the Blue Ridge. While the presence of lead-zinc sulfide ores has been known in this area for more than 200 years, it was in 1902 that New Jersey Zinc Co. acquired the Austinville property, which has been in constant operation since that time. About ten years ago the company undertook an extensive diamond drilling program at Ivanhoe several miles to the southwest. This program was successful in locating sufficient ore to justify the purchase of a number of the properties in this area and plans were made to develop the new orebodies. The discovery of this ore as well as substantial additional reserves at Austinville resulted in a decision by the company to increase its daily milling capacity to 3000 tons, of which about 1000 tons would be supplied from the Ivanhoe mine.

CURRENTLY 12,892 students are enrolled in the mineral engineering schools of the United States and Canada, marking an all-time record high for these schools. It shows a remarkably rapid recovery from the effects of World War II. Enrollment in all the other engineering branches has also increased but not so rapidly as in the mineral engineering branch. Almost all the data in this report are from the eighth questionnaire study of the mineral engineering schools made, as formerly, under the auspices of the Mineral Industry Education Division of the AIME. Every school is represented in the data, for which the authors thank the deans and professors who supplied the information. For this reason, the data of all the studies are comparable, an achievement not always possible in endeavors of this kind. For comparison with the general engineering enrollment situation, data are included from the January 1947 issue of the Journal of Engineering Education.
