For elevated temperature-constant load creep tests of a solid solution alloys, the creep strain is a function of a temperature-compensated time parameter 0 = je H/RT dt. The activation energy H is equal to o constant of about 36,000 cal per mol. The substructures resulting from a given creep stress condition are functions of the creep strain independent of temperature. Each new creep stress gives a new unique set of grain substructures; this is one of the factors responsible for the failure of the mechanical equation of state for creep. IN this report an attempt is made to correlate the creep properties of dilute a: solid solutions in aluminum with the subgrain structures that are developed during creep. The possibilities of such correlations have already been suggested by Wood et al. and others1-" who demonstrated that the subgrain structures are functions of the creep stress, creep strain, rate of creep, and temperature. Investigations by Sherby and Dorn' have shown that the creep strain, E, at constant load for dilute a solid solutions of aluminum is given by the functional relationship: e = f(8,u,) [1] where: 0 equals te-AH/RT = temperature-compensated time; t, time; AH, activation energy, - 35,800 cal per mol; R, gas constant; T, absolute temperature, above 400°K; and u,, initial creep stress. Consequently, it was anticipated that the subgrain structure that develops during a constant load creep test should also correlate with any two of the three significant variables C, 8, and Another possible correlation between the subgrain structure and the creep variables is obtained by differentiating Eq. 1 with respect to time, whence the creep rate, 2, becomes: = (2L) (2) =f (, u,) e-AHRT [2] or: e = F (c e H/RT, 0) [3] For the minimum creep rate, ;,, 8 is solely a function of U, as revealed by Eq. 1. Consequently, at the minimum creep rate Eq. 3 reduces to: = F (eAH/RT) [41 Correlations between U, and i, eAH/RT were found valid for solid solution alloys of aluminum where AH was a constant of about 35,800 cal per mol. The parameter ;, eH/RT is identical to the Zener-Hollo-mon parameter8," used by them in evaluating the tensile properties of copper and other metals. Eq. 4 suggests that the subgrain structure developed during secondary creep might be correlatable with either of the two variables 2, e H/RT or u,. Some of the solid solution aluminum alloys which were discussed in an earlier report' were also used in the present investigation. Sheets of these alloys were homogenized, cold rolled from 0.100 to 0.070 in. in thickness and then recrystallized to about the same grain size. Their chemical composition and grain size are recorded in Table I. Creep specimens were selected with their tensile axes in the rolling direction. The details for creep testing have been described10 and will not be repeated here. All creep tests were performed under constant load conditions. Experimental Results and Discussion Metallographic Structure of Creep Specimens: In order to obtain a preliminary concept of creep on the metallographic structure of high purity aluminum, the various ruptured specimens previously used to obtain the creep data for pure aluminum were polished and etched electrolytically in a dilute solution of fluoroboric acid. Oblique illumination was used to reveal the substructures which, for convenience, are shown in correlation with the vs. ;, eH/RT curve in Fig. 1. It is necessary to emphasize that the data for the curve refer to the various secondary stages of creep whereas the micrographs refer to the fractured creep specimens. Nevertheless a regular and systematic correlation is observed between E, eAH/RT (or the creep stress) and the micro-structure at fracture. For In (e, eAH/RT) = 42.3, which refers to creep at a high creep rate and a low creep temperature, the fractured aluminum specimen, as shown by the micrograph in the upper right-hand corner of Fig. 1, exhibited extensive deforma-

IT is unnecessary to review much of the literature on hydrogen embrittlement of steel since several excellent reviews and bibliographies exist.1-3 Hot acid pickling and cathodic charging have been known to cause hydrogen embrittlement of steel and have been used as laboratory methods to charge steels with hydrogen.4-8 Experimental Procedure The problem of prime concern in all instances, except in the work of Sims and coworkers,10 is that at no time was there a definite known hydrogen value reported which could be related to a particular value of the degree of embrittlement. It was the purpose of this research to determine the relationship between hydrogen content and degree of em-brittlement quantitatively. The 1020 stock used for the specimens was hot-rolled 7/16 in. diam rod of the following analysis: 0.19 pct C, 0.40 pct Mn, 0.012 pct P, 0.036 pct S' Vacuum-fusion analyses for nitrogen and oxygen gave 0.014 pct O2 and 0.0011 pct N2. Cathodic charging was used to cause embrittle-ment. The advantages of this method were that no quenching was necessary, the impregnation was reasonably controllable, and representative samples for analysis could be prepared simultaneously with the charging of the tensile bars. Analyses for hydrogen were made in a vacuum-fusion type of apparatus which extracted gas from the samples by fusion in a molten tin-iron bath' This apparatus, which has recently been described in detail elsewhere, will not be discussed here.". " Consecutive samples can be analyzed every 15 min with an accuracy of 0'03 ppm. A A from an electrolytic or pickling bath can be charged for analysis in about 3 min, and analysis completed in 15 min. Samples of as-received 1020 stock were analyzed and found to contain a negligible amount of hydrogen (0.06 ppm). Preliminary pickling and electrolytic charging gave highly variable results. Cold-worked samples showed higher values but ranged from 0.6 to 6.0 ppm of hydrogen. Charging at 90°C gave higher values of charged hydrogen, but troublesome films on many of the specimens resulted. It was not until a few drops of a catalytic poison, prepared from 2 g of yellow phosphorus dissolved in 40 ml of carbon disulphide,8 was added to the electrolytic cell that fairly consistent high values of hydrogen could be charged into the as-received 1020 steel at room temperature. The cell used is sketched in fig. 1. The anode and fixture for the tensile specimens were fastened to the cell cover as shown, and the specimen was screwed in place, centrally located with respect to the anode. At first, anodes of lead and graphite were tried, but they contaminated the electrolyte and gave a slight deposit on the specimen. Later, a platinum wire was used in the form of a uniform helix. A current of 2 amp, corresponding to about 0.5 amp per sq in. of cathode, was used for most specimens. The electrolyte was 4 pct H2SO4 solution. Fig. 1 shows the form of the special tensile bar, the main portion of which was an ordinary 1/4 in. diam, 1 in. gauge length test bar, except that two to four small cylinders of stock were left attached by small links to the bottom end of the tensile bar for the purpose of providing samples for hydrogen analysis. Thus the bars and samples were charged with hydrogen simultaneously and an analysis could be made while the bar was being tested mechanically. Experiments were performed to determine how representative the test cylinders were of the middle of the test bar proper. While the bar center was being analyzed, the small cylinder was stored in dry ice, since it had been shown that such storage prevents loss of hydrogen for many hours.12 The results of these checks are shown in table 1. The checks are very good (0.3 ppm) and indicate that it is permissible to use the small end cylinders to establish the hydrogen content of the tensile test bar proper-

Activities of iron in Fe-Pt alloys have been dctermined by equilibrating mixtures of platinum metal and iron oxide at known oxygen Pressures in a thermobalance at 1300°C. Conzpositions and iron activities of the oxide phase at equilibrium are known from previous work, and compositions of the Fe-Pt alloy phase formed at equilibrium were detcvt?zined from the observed weight changes of the samples. The activity curve obtained shows a strow negative deviation from Raoult's law. THE present investigation was undertaken as part of a research program dealing with phase equilibrium relations existing among the oxides of iron and titanium at 1300°C. At low oxygen pressures of the gas phase in equilibrium with these oxides, the iron activity of the system is high, and considerable alloying of iron with the platinum used as a container material takes place. Thermodynamic data for Fe-Pt alloys at 1300°C are needed in order to evaluate quantitatively the extent of such reactions. Larson and chipmanlhave determined activities of iron in Fe-Pt alloys at 1550°C by equilibrating platinum metal with CaO-iron oxide-SiOzmelts in which the iron activities were known. Compositions of the resulting Fe-Pt alloys were determined by chemical analysis. Mundiath and Gerassimov2 have studied thermodynamic properties of Fe-Pt alloys by electromotive force measurements in the temperature range 550" to 1000°C. The experimental method used in the present investigation is a slight modification of that used by Grube and Ratsch3 in studies of NiCr-alloys. 1) EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) General. Mixtures of platinum metal and iron oxide were equilibrated at 1300°C in atmospheres of known oxygzn przssures, and the course of the reactions was followed by measuring the weight changes of the mixtures. The principles involved in the derivation of composition-activity relations from these measurements are illustrated by the composition triangle for the system Fe-FeZO3-Pt shown in Fig. 1. Take as an example a mixture of FeZO3 (hematite) and platinum such that the total composition is represented by point T. If this mixture is heated to 1300c in air (poz = 0.21 atm) and the oxygen pressure is then reduced gradually, the oxygen content of the oxide phase decreases and increasing amounts of iron enter the metal phase. As the oxide phase and the metal phase for all practical purposes are insoluble in each other, their compositions are represented by points moving toward Fe along the joins Fe-Fe,03 and Fe-Pt, respectively. The total composition of the mixture during this process also changes, but only with respect to oxygen content, because the vapor pressures of iron and platinum are negligible at 1300°C. Hence the change in total composition is described by a straight line (constant Fe/Pt ratio) radiating from the 0 apex of the composition triangle Fe-Pt-0, of which the triangle in Fig. 1 is a part. Only one such line ("oxygen reaction line", T-T",) is shown in Fig. 1. The total composition of the alloy-iron oxide mixture at any instant must, in addition, be located on the straight line (conjugation line) connecting the two points representing the compositions of the two coexisting phases. It therefore follows that the total composition of the mixture at any instant is represented by the point of intersection between the conjugation line and the oxygen reaction line. An example of the situation prevailing at a chosen oxygen pressure, po2, is shown in Fig. 1 by points a' (alloy composition), b' (oxide composition) and T' (total composition). Point b' is known from the work of Darken and Gurry,4 and point T' is experimentally determined by the observed weight change of the mixture (distance T-T). Hence, point a', the composition of the alloy, is determined from the above data as the intersection between the join Pt-Fe and the extension of the straight line bl-7'. THE so-called Kick law' is generally accepted to . mean that for each reduction to one-half in particle diameter, in a unit weight, the same amount of work is required. In crushing-efficiency calculations on crushing tests it is customary, when basing the calculation on Kick's law, to assign ordinal numbers to each standard sieve size. These ordinal numbers increase by a constant difference with each successive sieve aperture, because standard sieve apertures are in constant ratio. Minus 200-mesh is generally assumed as equivalent to 37 microns in size. By definition, the ordinal number multiplied by the per cent material of any size is equal to the energy units in the material of that size in a unit weight of sample. The sum of all energy units is the energy units content of a unit weight of sample, whether it be crusher feed or product. The difference between the energy units in the product and that in the feed is the tangible result of the work input per unit weight of feed. From this the amount of work necessary for one energy unit may be calculated. This has been done for a quartz crushing-test made at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, in which the net work going to crushing was carefully measured. The results of this crushing test are given in Table 1.'

Introduction Soda ash, anhydrous sodium carbonate, is produced from underground trona deposits occurring in the Green River Basin of southwestern Wyoming. Stauffer Chemical Co. of Wyoming, a jointly owned subsidiary of Stauffer Chemical Co. and Rocky Mountain Energy Co., mines the trona and processes it into high-purity soda ash. Stauffer Wyoming has been in operation since 1962 with a current production capacity of about 1.8 Mt (2 million st) per year of soda ash. The refinery has five parallel operating trains using the monohydrate process which is a series of chemical processing unit operations described below. Screening and Crushing The mined trona is brought to the surface in two counterbalancing ore skips. The ore is initially screened with refinery feed (less than peagravel size material) entering the process. Oversize is conveyed to an outdoor stockpile. Ore is recycled from under the stockpile via cone feeders as the refinery needs require. The ore is conveyed to hammer type crushers and screened. The refinery feed enters the process and the oversize is recycled to the crushers. Calcining The first step in refining trona to soda ash is calcining the trona ore. This is accomplished in concurrent flow, rotary kilns that are direct fired with natural gas. [2 (Na CO NaHCO 2H O) Heat 3Na CO + 5H20 + CO 2 3~3~ 2 ~~2 32] The trona ore is fed to the kiln at the burner end and is intimately mixed with the hot exhaust gases from the burner. Direct contact with the flame is avoided. The ore moves down the kiln by gravity and rotation aided by the kiln's internal lifters. The exhaust gases are cleaned to 99 + % particulate removal and discharged to the atmosphere. Dissolving the Calcined Trona The calcined trona is conveyed from the kiln discharge to a rotary drum dissolver where it is mixed with water and weak solution (unsaturated solution of calcined trona in water). The calcined trona is soluble whereas the impurities, primarily shale, are insoluble. The discharge from the dissolver is a slurry containing saturated solution (about 30% dissolved calcined trona in water), some undissolved calcined trona, insoluble impurities, and organic impurities. The dissolver discharge enters a rake classifier that makes the first solid/liquid separation in the process by removing the heavy undissolved material from the saturated solution. This undissolved material is conveyed to a second rotary drum dissolver and mixed with water to dissolve any remaining calcined trona. The secondary dissolver discharges to a second rake classifier that separates the solids from the liquid. The solids are now primarily insoluble impurities with very little unrecovered calcined trona. These wastes are conveyed to evaporation ponds for disposal. The liquid from the secondary rake is recycled to the primary dissolvers' weak solution system. Returning to the primary rake classifier, the saturated solution which contains suspended insoluble muds is pumped to a thickener. Flocculant is added to aid settling of the suspended muds. The flocculated muds are collected at the bottom of the thickener and pumped to vacuum cloth filters. The adhering saturated solution is separated from the muds that remain on the filter cloth. The recovered solution is returned to the dissolvers' weak solution system. The muds are reslurried and pumped to the evaporation ponds for disposal. Saturated solution, containing some suspended insoluble muds along with the organic impurities, overflows the thickener. Filtering the Saturated Solution The saturated solution overflowing the thickener enters a holding tank where it is pumped to a bank of pressure leaf filters. The suspended muds are captured on the filter leaves while the cleaned saturated solution is pumped to polishing filters. The polishing filters are also leaf pressure type, intended to remove any suspended solids that may pass the primary filters. Organic impurities are removed with activated carbon. The purified solution is now free of insoluble muds and has most of the organic impurities removed. Crystallizing and Drying the Monohydrate The purified saturated solution is pumped to evaporative crystallizers. The solution is circulated from the crystallizer vessel through a heat exchanger. Indirect contact with steam in the heat exchanger causes the saturated solution to boil, thus crystallizing the soda ash in its monohydrate form. Slurry crystal density is maintained in the crystallizer by simulta¬neous feed of fresh saturated solution and drawoff of the slurry.

The Homestake mine, located in western South Dakota, was discovered in 1876. The first reported production was in I 878. Total production through 1965 is 6,554,249 troy ounces of silver and 27,961,276 troy ounces of gold, worth $987,000,000 at present prices. Precambrian sedimentary formations at Lead total 20,000 feet. The Poorman Formation, the oldest, is chiefly ankerite carbonate. The Homestake Formation is iron-magnesium carbonate. The younger formations are argillaceous with some quartzites. The Cambrian Deadwood Formation unconformably overlies the Precambrian. All are cut by Tertiary intrusives. Sideroplesite schist of the Homestake Formation was converted to cummingtonite schist in the zones of higher-grade metamorphism. The Precambrian rocks show the effects of extreme isoclinal folding. A second stage of folding ( cross folds) may have been caused by the Tertiary intrusives. All folds plunge to the southeast. The Homestake ore bodies are pipe-like replacements of the Homestake Formation in zones of cross folding. It is believed that dilatation of the schists has increased permeability in these zones. Chloritization of the schists is the most widespread effect of the mineralization which is divided into four stages. Principal minerals of the first stage are quartz, chlorite, and arsenopyrite; in the second stage, quartz, ankerite, and pyrrhotite. In the third stage only pyrrhotite was deposited. The fourth stage followed the intrusions of Tertiary dikes and deposited mostly pyrite and calcite. Gold accompanies all stages and is always the last mineral to be deposited. It is most closely associated with arsenopyrite of the first stage but can be interpreted as having been deposited during the fourth stage and superimposed on the products of the earlier stages.

INDICATIVE of the practical importance of the achievement of James Aston , recipient of the Robert W. Hunt Medal for 1930, is the following prosaic item from the financial columns of a recent issue of a New York newspaper. "According to private advices from Pittsburgh, production costs of the A. M. Byers Co. for 1929 were reduced about $5 a ton by the use of the Aston process for making wrought iron pipe. A greater saving is anticipated for 1930, when more of the company?s requirements will be produced by the new method."

MEMBERS of the Engineering Education Committee held two meetings at Joplin preliminary to the opening of the main meeting there. The first was held on Sunday afternoon. It was attended by all who had arrived early enough and as among the dozen or' fifteen who were present the heads of a half dozen schools of mines were included it was a representative gathering. C: H. Fulton, chairman of the Committee presided and T. T. Read acted as secretary of the meeting. The chair., man reminded those present that last year there had been some discussion as to the advisability of the proposal, made by Edward Steidle, that a, separate society, devoted to education in the mineral industry, he organized. Many .people had felt that there are already so many societies in existence to demand one's time and attention, that it would be a mistake to add to their number and the counter suggestion had been made that the work of this committee could be so reorganized as to meet all the needs that a separate society could fill. He therefore presented for discussion these four' questions: (1) Shall a subcommittee .be appointed to study, and report in February, 1932, the possibility of the reorganization of the work of the Engineering Education Committee into the equivalent of an' Institute division; (2) if the work is so reorganized what shall be the relation of the work of the Committee (division) to the work of the-Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education; (3.): what are the, cardinal objectives of education for the mineral industry; and (4) what should be done as regards the movement in some institutions to plan their work-in the light of that being done in other institutions, for example, in geophysics?

The paper presents a stability investigation of shaft intersections and pit bottom roadways in the vicinity of upcast and downcast shafts at a colliery in the U.K. Aschemeof instrumentation was aimed at monitoring the strata displacement surrounding the pit bottom roadways and shaft intersections with a view to ascertaining the origin of the strata movement and effectiveness of the control measures. The bore- hole instrumentation results together with a theoretical analysis suggested that the cause of instability could be attributed to the drivage of a roadway within the shaft pillar. A semi-empirical technique was used to calculate the amount of support resistance required to reinforce the pillar to take additional abutment load. A rock bolting system was designed to provide a required increase in thrust capacity of the roadway support. The results indicated that roadway closure was effectively controlled after installation of bolts indicating efficacy of the control measures adopted.

P. Shahinian and M. R. Achter (U.S. Naval Research Laboratory)—We should like to point out another instance where concentration of impurities in grain boundaries led to an embrittlement. In this case an impure nickel (99.8 pct) developed many more in-tergranular cracks during creep in a nitrogen atmosphere than in vacuum.5 In comparison high-purity nickel (99.99 pct) exhibited a much smaller atmosphere effect. We concluded that the interartion of the nitrogen with nitride-forming impurities concentrated at grain boundaries promoted inter-granular cracking.

COAL research during 1941 had a marked increase in activity on problems bearing directly on furthering the increased and improved use of coal in homes and industry. Coal producers and fuel engineers expressed a greater interest in its practical possibilities and the coal laboratories have shown an increased interest in applied research, of value at once or in the near future to industry and the public. A large volume of accomplishment in mining, coal analysis, and the fundamentals of coal constitution and coal chemistry also continued to fill the storehouse from which applied research and fuel engineering of the future can draw valuable data.

TWENTY-FIVE years ago the training of an engineer was of interest solely to the educator and to the student entering the field. At that time the engineer's position in society was relatively simple. His training emphasized design and operation and he expected to enter industry to handle the engineering problems of raw materials production, mechanical and product design, and the operation of power plants, factories, transportation and communication systems, and similar phases of industrial activity. He was not concerned with or particularly interested in the problems of management, administration, sales, publicity, industrial relations, or of legislation. To a large degree he was content to leave these matters to self-made businessmen, or men trained in law, finance, or commerce. That period in the evolution of the engineer is now history. In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from circulars to authors, compiled by Mr. Frank A. Herald when he was Vice Chairman for Production of the Petroleurn Division: Generally in Table 1 the unit for presentation of data is a field. For our purposes a field is defined as the whole of a surface area wherein productive, locations are continuous. Such unit commonly includes and surrounds nonproductive areas. Such unit commonly includes a great variety of geologic conditions-—several units of continuous productive reservoirs of distinctly different structure and of distinctly different stratigraphy. Therefore it is hoped that our authors will subdivide "field" so as to enable students to make analyses that may have scientific and/or commercial value. As to each space in the tabulation, it is either (1) not applicable, (2) the proper entry is not determinable, (3) the proper entry is determinable, but not determinable from data available to the author, (4) the proper entry is determinable by the author. In spaces not applicable, the author will please draw horizontal lines; in spaces where the proper entries are not determinable, the author will please insert 2; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not determinable from data available to the author, the author will please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are deter-minable by the author he will, of course, make such entries. Generally, y implies a hope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces, the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved") and in such cases the entries need not be hedged to such extent as in cases where the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use 2. For example, if the total production of a field is known to be between 1,800,000 and 1,850,000, the author may report 1,8xx,xxx; or if the production is between 1,850,000 and 1,900,000, the author may report 1,9xx,xxx. Where a numeral is immediately to the left of x or y, such numeral represents the nearest known number in that position. As to quantity of gas produced from many fields the question will arise as to whether the figures should include merely the gas marketed or should include also estimates of gas used in operations and gas wasted. Although rough approximations may be involved, our figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir.
