Mechanical inclusion, electrophoretic deposition, and adsorption were studied as mechanisms for code-position of aluminas present in copper-plating electrolytes as an insoluble disperse phase. Mechanical inclusion was not a significant factor. That codeposi-tzon of aluminas by an electrophoretic mechanism was unlikely was substantiated by measurements of the potential of the aluminas. The alumina content of the deposits was studied as a function of the pH of the bath. These tests in conjunction with sedimentation studies demonstrated the absence of an isoelectric point for the alutninas over the pH range examined. Thiourea in the electrolyte (a substance known to be adsorbed on a copper cathode during electrodeposition) affected the amount of alumina in the electrodeposit. However, no adsorption of thiourea on aluminas in aqueous dispersions was detected. If it were possible to produce a dispersion-hardened alloy of copper and alumina by electrodeposition, an alloy possessing both strength and high conductivity at elevated temperatures might be anticipated. Investigation of the mechanism of codeposition of aluminas with copper was undertaken with the hope that knowledge of the mechanism would aid in the development of such an alloy. The word "codeposit" here does not necessarily imply an electrolytic phenomenon but rather that the materials codepositing, the various aluminas, are transported to and embedded in the electrodeposited copper by some means. Mechanical inclusion in electrodeposition implies a mechanism of codeposition which is wholly mechanical in nature; the only forces acting on a particle are gravity and contact forces. Such a particle is presumed to be electrically inert and incapable of any electrical interaction with electrodes in an electrolytic plating bath. Processes for matrices containing a codeposited phase by electrodeposition from a bath containing a disperse insoluble phase frequently state that code-position is caused by mechanical inclusion.10,2,12 If settling, i.e., gravity, be the controlling mechanism for codeposition of aluminas, then assumptions may be made that 1) the content of alumina in the electrodeposit should be enhanced by increasing the particle size, 2) the geometry of the system, that is, the disposition of the cathode surfaces relative to the di- rection of the falling particles, should affect the alumina content of the electrodeposit, 3) in geometrically identical systems the chemical composition of the electrolyte employed should exercise no effect on the alumina content of the deposit, that is, the alumina content should be the same in all cathode deposits irrespective of bath composition. A bent cathode19 evaluates the clarity of filter effluent in electroplating baths by comparing the roughness of the deposit on the vertical surface with that on the horizontal surface. Two difficulties are inherent in this technique: 1) the current density on the horizontal portion of the cathode would be substantially greater than that on the vertical surface; 2) should the deposit obtained be rough, projections on the vertical face could act as horizontal planes and vitiate the relationship between the vertical and horizontal surfaces. Bath composition should have no substantial effect on the alumina content of the deposit. Two different electrolytic baths were employed. They possessed variant specific conductances and substantially different pH ranges. The experimental tanks were rectangular Pyrex battery jars 6 in. wide by 3 1/4 in. long by 9 3/4 in. deep. The cathodes were stainless steel 316 sheet of 0.030 in. thickness, cut to 7.5 by 1.75 in. and bent at right angles to form an L-shaped cathode whose horizontal surfaces measured 1.75 by 3.0 in. All edges and vertical surfaces were masked with Scotch Elec-troplaters Tape No. 470. The anodes were electrolytic cathode copper 9 in. high by 2.25 in. wide by 0.5 in. thick. To eliminate inordinately high current densities on the projecting edge of the cathode, the anode was masked 1 in. above and below the projected line of intersection of the cathode with the anode. The exposed area of the anode was equal to that of the cathode, providing both with equal average current densities. The agitator in the cell was of Pyrex glass and positioned so its center line was equidistant from cathode and anode, and a plane passed horizontally through the center of the blade would be located equidistant from the bottom of the cathode and the bottom of the deposition tank. The assembled apparatus is depicted in Fig. 1. Hatched areas on anode and cathode represent the area of the electrodes wrapped with electroplaters tape. MATERIALS The chemicals were copper sulfate—CuSO4 • 5H2O— technical powder (Fisher Scientific Co.). Spectro-graphic analysis showed substantial freedom from antimony, arsenic, and iron. On the assumption that stress or strain relaxation occurs as the result of a thermally activated process, equations are derived relating to tensile experiments that give the strain as a function of the time under the condition of constant stress, and the stress as a function of the time for constant strain. It is demonstrated that if the strain-rate equation i = previously proPosed by Kuhlmann., is used as a starting point, then the relaxation of strain at constant stress may be expressed by the equation c = (-RT/(Y) 1tz tanh (t + is the strain capable of being relaxed at any given instant. Similarly, it is shown that the relaxation of stress at constant strain may be given by a = (-RT/B) In tanh (t + t0)/27, where a is the instantaneois value of the relaxable stress. The fact that these relationships reduce to well-known empirical equations at both large and small values of the stress Or strain is also shozcn. The present theory is shown to agree well with experimental data obtained from tensile elastic aftereffect experiments on a zirconium specimen prestrained at 77 k as to make it strongly anelastic. It is also demonstrated that elastic aftereffect data obtained using torsional specimens ?,Lay agree reasonably well with the equation derived for the case of tension. RELAXATION experiments are often employed as a means of studying metallic deformation mechanisms.' The simplest and most commonly employed techniques involve stress relaxation at constant strain and strain relaxation at constant stress. In general, however, investigations of this nature have been seriously handicapped in the past by a lack of suitable equations giving the time dependence of the relaxing variable over an interval that extends from small strains up into the region where internal-friction experiments become strain-amplitude dependent. This paper presents a derivation of such a set of equations for the case where the time-dependent part of the strain is anelastic or recoverable and the specimens are loaded in simple tension. The relaxation of strain under the condition of constant stress will be considered first. Let us assume that strain relaxation occurs as the result of a reversible thermally activated process that occurs at a number of relaxation centers lying in an elastic matrix. Then, following Kuhlmann,2 we may express the rate of strain relaxation as follows: where C is the strain rate, AFx the free energy of activation of the process controlling strain relaxation, a, the effective or average resolved stress at the relaxation centers, u an activation volume, R the universal gas constant, T the absolute temperature, > a factor with dimensions of a volume that accounts for the strain contribution of a successful operation of a unit process, N the number of relaxation centers per unit volume, and v the Debye frequency. The first term on the right of Eq. [I] represents a strain rate in the direction favored by the stress, while the second term represents the rate in the opposite direction. It is implied in Eq. [I.] that both F and v are symmetrical with respect to the two basic directions of operation of a relaxation process. Eq. [I] may also be written where and S and Q are the activation entropy and activation energy, respectively, of the relaxation process. In the following, A will be considered a constant. This is compatible with a set of experimental conditions where the relaxation rate is controlled by a single basic reversible process in which it may be assumed that the temperature dependence of the product ?Nv is negligible in comparison with the temperature variation of the exponential term. It is also implied that v, 7, and N do not depend strongly on a, . In deriving a relationship for the strain as a function of the time from her equation, equivalent to Eq. [2], Kuhlmann2 chose to consider only the limiting cases where the time was either very small or very large. It will now be shown that it is possible to integrate Eq. [2] to obtain a single equation valid over a wide range of strains if the concept of relaxable strain is introduced. The use of this quantity, which is the difference between the instantaneous value of the strain and the value of the strain at complete relaxation, represents the primary point of departure of the present theory from that of earlier workers. Let us express the effective stress at the relaxation centers in terms of strain. Transmission-electron micrographs of electro-thinned samples of bulk-aged Cu-3.1 pet Co alloy show an aging sequence, supersaturated solid solution — coherent particles — quasi -coherent particles — noncoherent particles. Hardening is due to precipitation of coherent spherical fee coball-rich particles showing coherency strain fields, which are resolved at between 15 and 30A diameter. Loss of- full coherency did not occur until well into the overaged region, even with the assistance of deformation after aging. Different average particle diameters of 123, 92, and 149 ± 10Å were observed in samples aged to peak yield strength at 600°, 650°, and 700°C, respectively, indicating that there is no critical size for peak hardening. Noncoherent particles tended to develop (111) faces and became octahedral in shape. Dislocations tended to nucleate spherical coherent particles which eventually grew together forming large elongated particles. The surface energy of a noncoherent (low-angle) inter-phase boundary is estimated to he about 50 ergs per sq cm. A number of particle lining-up phenomena were observed. Overaging is principally attributed to increase in particle spacing, progressive loss of coherency, and increase in amount of discontinzdous precipitation. COPPER dissolves about 5.6 at. pet (5.2 wt pet) of cobalt at 1110oC1 and the solubility decreases to 0.75 at. petl (0.54 at. pet)2 at 650°C and to 0.1 at. pet or less at lower temperature.' It has been known for many years3-5 that Cu-Co alloys are capable of age hardening. Since cobalt is fee above 417°C and its atom size is only about 2 pet smaller than that of copper, precipitation of coherent particles would be expected. The equilibrium phase precipitated at 700°C and below contains about 10 pet Cu in solution which tends to stabilize the fee structure, lowering the transformation temperature to 340oc.l The alloy is known to undergo discontinuous precipitation in addition to general precipitation; while the former can be seen with an optical microscope, the latter precipitates are not visible except in the grosly overaged condition.5, 6 Extensive use has therefore been made of the ferromagnetic properties of the precipitate in order to follow the course of aging, and it has proved possible to measure the average particle size, spacing, approximate shape, and volume fraction and to determine that the particles are coherent without ever seeing a particle (see for example Refs. 2, 7, and 8). The magnetic measurements of particle size are limited to diameters below about 120Å.7 The present study was undertaken using the techniques of transmission-electron microscopy in order to check the above conclusions, to extend the previous magnetic work to larger particle sizes, and to attempt a more detailed correlation of properties and structure. A portion of this work has already been published.9-11 The present paper is concerned with the metallographic features of precipitation in relation to aging curves. Bonar and Kelly12'13 have published preliminary results of a similar study on single crystals of Cu-2 at. pet Co. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation of Alloy. A Cu-Co alloy, containing 3.12 wt pet (3.36 at. pet) Co by analysis, was prepared from 99.999 pet purity oxygen-free copper and electrolytic-grade cobalt. The alloy was melted and cast in vacuo in a high-frequency furnace using a graphite crucible and mold: Analysis showed chat 0.004 pet C was picked up during melting. The 1-1/2-lb ingot was homogenized in hydrogen for 24 hr at 1000°C. Slices were cold-rolled to 0.005 or 0.003 in. thickness, with an intermediate 650°C anneal in hydrogen at 0.080 in. thickness. Batches of six to ten strips were solution-treated in sealed-off quartz tubes in high vacuum in a vertical furnace and quenched by dropping into iced brine containing a device which snapped off the nose of the tube. Solution treatment consisted of 1 hr at 990°C or 2 hr at 965°C. The latter was employed for all mechanical-property studies, since a tendency was noted for the higher temperature to give porous material. Strips were usually aged individually in a horizontal vacuum furnace, inserting into the hot zone and withdrawing into a cold zone without breaking the vacuum. This method gave a rapid heating rate, permitting the use of short aging times. At low sodium-oleate concentration, calcite flotation is substantially improved by the use of CO2 instead of air. Electrophoretic mobility measurements indicate that carbonation results in the accumulation o f positive charge on the calcite particles. This heightens adsorption of oleate anion, an effect confirmed by tracer-technique measurements. Fundamental insight is obtained as to how CO2 serves better as an activator than some mineral and organic acids, how oxalic acid acts as a depressor, and why the influence of Ca++ ions, liberated during carbonation, on flotation behavior of calcite is insignificant and sometimes adverse.

LIKE a runner catching his second wind, the mining geologist in 1944 has had some opportunity to appraise the result of three years of active and intense search for the metallic sinews of war and peace. The war period has been one of physical activity and accumulation of new data but has not so far resulted in the announcement of any profound or revolutionary theoretical concepts or techniques. Most technical publications during the year have been either descriptive or statistical. A review of accomplishments during the war years, although affording some measure of satisfaction in individual cases or regarding production of certain metals or' ores, is far from justifying any feeling of complacency regarding the growth of the profession either in fundamental knowledge or in application. During 1944 an abundant supply of all metals and minerals flowed steadily to smelters and fabricating plants. Also, during this and preceding years, adequate stock piles for war needs, in view of the improved foreign and domestic supply situation, were accumulated in many metals in such quantities that the mining industry has become concerned not with the problem of supply but with the effect these accumulated stocks, if maintained, might have on the postwar market. These considerations culminated in the enactment by Congress of the Surplus Disposal Act, which, admittedly a tempo-

The One Hundred Eighteenth Meeting of the. Institute was held at the Milwaukee Auditorium, on Tuesday,. Oct. 8, to Thursday, Oct. 10, inclusive, 1918, under the joint auspices of the Committee on Iron and Steel (Chairman, Prof. J. W. Richards), and the Institute of Metals Division (Chairman, William M. Corse), and simultaneously with sessions of the American Foundrymen's Association and of the. American Malleable Castings Association. It was preeminently a war meeting. It was attended by 104 members of the Institute. The social features, so far as the members of this Institute were concerned, were slight, but generous and appropriate entertainment was offered to the ladies, consisting of automobile sight-seeing trips, reception, concert and dance on Tuesday evening, a theatre party Wednesday evening, and -a banquet in-the Auditorium Thursday evening, at which the speakers were Charles M. Schwab, Director General of the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, Major A. Radclyffe Dugmore, and W. H. Blood, Jr., Assistant to the President of the American International Shipbuilding Corporation. A joint session was held on Tuesday morning, at which an address of welcome was delivered by Hon. Emanuel L. Phillipp, Governor of Wisconsin, with a response by Benjamin D. THE discovery of SAP alloys (sintered aluminum powders) by lrmannl has stimulated investigations in other alloy systems.23 Not only do such alloys have good room-temperature properties, but they maintain high strength after prolonged service at elevated temperatures. In addition, they show high structural stability, including unusually high recrystallization temperatures. These characteristics are secured by dispersion hardening. For this investigation, Zn-ZnO alloys were selected. Practically, the fact that commercially pure zinc recrystallizes near room temperature prohibits strengthening and hardening by cold deformation and therefore limits the application of zinc where mechanical strength is important. The Zv-Hf-H ternary system was studied between 500° and 900°C at pressures less than 1 atm of hydrogen gas between 1 and 60 at. pct H. A new and unique microgravimentric apparatus was used. Cizanges of slope on pressure-hydrogen composition isothernis delineated phase boundaries. These boundaries separatecl the three regions, a, 0, and y—so designated to correspond to the regions of the Zr-H binary system—from the multiphased areas between them. A eutectoidal decomposition was found with the ß region phase or phases decornposing into a lamellar product on quenching to rool ter,zperatuve. Reproducible decomposition-pressure hysteresis occilrved lnainly at lower hydrogen cornpositions and at lower temperatures across multiplzase vegions between a and 0 and a and y. INTEREST in the reaction of hydrogen with metals has increased in the past few years for the following reasons: 1) the formation or use of high hydrogen potential environments in nuclear reactors; 2) the reaction of hydrogen with alloys in nuclear reactors with the accompanying deleterious effects on the mechanical and corrosion properties; 3) the theoretical implications of thermodynamic data on the theory and rules of alloy formation in the metal-hydrogen systems; 4) the use of hydrogen-containing fuels in rocket engines; 5) the need for a process of making fine metal powders of high-melting reactive metals; and 6) the beneficial impregnation of superconducting alloys with hydrogen. In nuclear pressurized-water reactors, the problem exists of limiting the hydrogen pickup of zirconium alloys which are utilized as fuel cladding, heat shields, and support members. In general, zirconium alloys have good mechanical and corrosion-resistant properties in high-temperature water. However, hydrogen is absorbed from the corrosion reaction between metal and water, greatly accelerating the formation of the corrosion product ZrOz as well as mechanically embrittling the underlying metal. In addition, recent observations1 at zirconium to hafnium welds showed that secondary elements in zirconium can have an appreciable, and somewhat unexpected, effect on hydrogen absorption. This paper lists the thermochemical data in the range 500" to 900°C for the equilibrium reaction of four high-purity Zr-Hf alloys with hydrogen. Phase boundaries and thermodynamic functions are determined while the structural data will be presented in a future paper. In general, the Zr-Hf-H system approximates the well-known, eutectoidal, Zr-H diagram2,3 with modifications introduced through the behavior of hafnium.4,5 The Hf-H system,' published while this work was in progress, provided a consistent trend with the Zr-Hf-H data. PREPARATION OF Zr-Hf ALLOYS Table I presents a complete flow chart of the preparation procedure. The zirconium and hafnium crystal bars were completely immersed in high-purity kerosene and slowly cut into thin wafers. Wafers were then cold-sheared into approximately 1-g pieces, thoroughly cleaned, weighed, and inserted into the furnace. The alloys, B-2, B-4, B-6, and B-8, were then nonconsumable arc-melted under 500 mm of purified argon. Additional purification of the argon was accomplished by melting a large titanium button each time an alloy was re-melted or a different alloy melted. Each alloy button, which weighed 25 g, was remelted four times in an approach to complete homogeneity. Material losses were less than 0.02 wt pct. Alloy buttons were alternately cold-rolled and vacuum-annealed into 10- and 20-mil sheets. Table I1 gives the composition of the four alloys used. Very little elemental segregation existed be-

THE 1941 fall meeting of the Iron and Steel and the Institute- of Metal, Division held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Philadelphia, during the first three days (Oct. 20-22) of the National Metal Congress was well attended as usual, and the seven technical sessions and the joint round table on order-disorder transformations were this year of considerably more than routine interest. Despite unseasonably warm weather, a scarcity of hotels (there were rumors, apparently well-founded, that , some of the metal man attending the Congress had to stay in tourist camp), and a multiplicity of technical and other ions of the co-operating societies that gave the Congress this year the general air of a three-ring circus the A.I.M.E. sessions attracted audiences that ragged from seventy or eighty up to 350

AT a recent meeting of the Utah Section. A.I.M.E., P. D. Nielson, general plant superintendent of the new Geneva steel plant at Provo, Utah, spoke on "General Operations of the Geneva Plant." Mr. Nielson explained that the plant was located at Provo, Utah, on account of railroad facilities, the proximity of coal, iron, and limestone, and the nearness of water for operating the plant. Water probably was the most important item in making the decision.

A CERTAIN area in the State of Indiana seems to be a breeding place for presidents and near president about eighteen miles southeast of Elwood is the little village of Daleville, and there, on April 9, 1890, John Robert Suman, newly elected President of the A.I.M.E., was born.
