Randomly oriented polycryslalline copper of 99.995 pcl was tested in tension at temperatures of 626o, 496o, and 406o. The gvain-size mnge investigated was from 0.03 to 0.7 mm. Grain sizes were produced by two techniques: 1) varying the amount of prior cold work and the amealing time at constant annealing temperature so as to obtain various vecrystallized grain sizes with minimum grain growth, and 4 holding the prior cold work constant while varying the annealing time or temperature so as to obtain varying grain sizes by grain growth. Polycrystalline samples (grain size of 0.03 mm) with a strong. [001](100) texture were also studied. The relationship between the steady-state creep rate, Es, and pain size was found to be the same indepentent of the technique used to prepare the various grain sizes. For specimens with grain diameters above about 0.1 mm ea zuas esse)ztiallj~ independent of grain size, while for smaller grain diameters Cs increased slightly with decreasing grain size. Strongly textured polycrystalline copper, which contained low-angle grain boundaries, exhibited steady-state creep rates that were slightly lower than those observed in randomly oriented copper, of the same gain size. The results are explained by conside?%ng- the contribution of grain boundary shearing to the total strain and the effect of grain size on the resulting creep substructure. EXPERIMENTAL observations concerning the influence of grain size on steady-state creep rates are varied and oftentimes conflicting. Numerous early investigators found that an increase in the grain size resulted in a decrease in the high-temperature steady-state creep rate, i,.'-" Other workers have foundthat ef decreases with increasing grain size up to some optimum grain size and then increases with a further increase in grain size.'- '' It has been suggested that es, decreases with an increase in grain size only because the range of grain sizes studied normally lies to the left of the grain size for optimum creep resistance. However, sherbyl2 and Feltham and his co-worker13, 14 have found that even for small grain sizes 2, does not always decrease with an increase in grain diameter but may be proportional to the square of the grain diameter. A possible explanation for the different creep rate-grain size relationships which have been observed is that in most experimental studies different grain sizes have been prepared by annealing at various temperatures. LIBRARIES are universally recognized as essential to modern civilization. In a world that gets most of its learning through the printed word, storehouses of print are a vital necessity. In this regard engineering differs in no way from the other learned professions, but until recent times the library needs of engineers have received rather scant attention. When the engineering profession was more of an art and less of a science than it is today, when each problem was solved more through the results of experience than by applying scientific principles, literature was less helpful. The engineer of today, however, is aware that his activities rest upon a scientific foundation and consequently comprehensive books dealing with more limited fields are now being published. Another difficulty for the operating engineer in the past was that the published works on engineering were written chiefly for use as college texts. A third obstacle to the development of engineering libraries has been the lack of librarians with experience in engineering.

Relaxation calculations were made to find the temperature distribution in the refractory wall surrounding a tuyere pipe. One set of boundary conditions approxiwated those of a standard copper converter while a second set represented a hypothetical,thermally insulated tuyere pipe. The pvonounced cooling effect of the tuyere is related to the problem of tuyere accretions and tuyere bunching. PARTICULARLY severe service conditions are encountered in the tuyere zone of a basic copper converter during the matte blow. High-temperature gradients result from the juxtaposition of the hot charge and the tuyere pipe carrying cold air. Refractory temperatures near the tuyere mouth vary rapidly with time when the blast is turned on or off. One of the most serious problems is the formation of magnetite accretions around the tuyere mouth, which occurs very rapidly under some operating conditions. As a result, continual punching of the tuyeres is necessary to maintain a satisfactory rate of converting. Thus, if some means could be devised for keeping the tuyere pipes fully open without necessity for punching, a considerable saving should result from reduction in labor cost, maintenance of full capacity operation, and reduction in refractory costs. Recent quantitative studies of the FeO-Fe,O,-SiO, system1 have shown that the solubility of magnetite in iron-silicate slags decreases rapidly with de- creasing temperature in the range of copper converting temperatures. Data taken from the previous work are shown in Fig. 1. Thus the formation of "horns" and accretions around the tuyere mouth can result simply from the freezing out of magnetite on the cooler areas of refractory immediately adjacent to the tuyere pipes. One might expect to find a correlation between the severity of magnetite formation and the area of refractory surface which is cooled below the freezing point of the slag (corresponding to magnetite precipitation). Magnetite itself has a very high melting point (1597°C) so that the accretions are for all practical purposes infusible. The accretions might be dissolved by increasing the silica content of the slag and at the same time raising the temperature, but this approach is not feasible because it results in rapid corrosion of the basic refractory lining of the converter as a whole. In order to understand better the problems involved in tuyere design and operation, it seems essential to have at least a semiquantitative idea of the thermal conditions in the tuyere zone. Most pellets swell only slightly during reduction, but some swell so enormusly that their increase in size is termed catastrophic. Since catastrophic swelling produces irregularities in blast furnace operation, an understanding of the phenomenon is of practical as well as theoretical interest. Observations have shown that catastrophic swelling is characterized by the growth of a network of fine iron filaments. Evidence is presented to show that the growth of these filaments is promoted by the presence of calcium in the magnetite lattice of the original ore. During reduction, the limited mutual solubility of CaO and FeO produces an unstable condition that inhibits the uniform nucleation of metallic iron. Other elements in the magnetite lattice whose oxides are continuously soluble in FeO in the critical temperature range have no effect. Magmatic segregation or pyrometasomatic replacements are the most likely deposits to contain calciferous magnetite. Over the past few years there has been an increasing concern throughout the iron and steel industry over the tendency of pellets to swell during reduction. Although the tendency for swelling is only one of several attributes that determine the behavior of pellets in the blast furnace, swelling-reduction tests are now part of the normal evaluation procedure of many pellet consumers. During a swelling-reduction test, pellets display either the moderate increase in size known as normal swelling, or the enormous expansion known as catastrophic swelling. This paper is concerned with the origin and control of catastrophic swelling and how it is enhanced or inhibited by the presence of minor elements. Swelling Behavior The swelling behavior of pellets during reduction is indicated in Fig. 1. The lower curve represents normal swelling and the upper curve catastrophic swelling.' During the initial stages of reduction, that is, up to about 20-25% reduction, the two curves are considered to be equivalent. Beyond this point normal pellets undergo a gradual decrease in size with increased reduction. By contrast, pellets which exhibit catastrophic swelling show a second dramatic expansion between 25 and 70% reduction. The initial normal swelling develops as the hematite of the pellet is successively reduced to magnetite, and then to wustite. Work by Edstrom' and others has shown that the reduction of hematite to magnetite is accompanied by a 25% volume increase, whereas the magnetite to wustite stage shows a volume decrease. The volume increase overlaps the wustite field because magnetite is formed simultaneously with the wustite during topochemical reduction of the pellet. The kinetics of the inter granular penetration and embrittlement of [100] tilt boundaries in 99.998 pct pure nickel upon exposure to bismuth-rich Ni-Bi liquids have been determined in the temperature range from 700° to 900°C. The kinetics of penetration are parabolic in time at constant temperature over most of the temperature range. In a series of 43-deg bicrystals the rate of penetration is anisotropic with respect to the direction of penetration into the grain boundaries. In lower-angle bicrystals the penetration rate is isotropic. The rate of penetration decreases with tilt angle at 700°C. The activation energy for penetration in the 43-deg bicrystals is 42 kcal per g-atom independent of direction. It is concluded that the intergranular penetration and embrittlement in the presence of the liquid proceeds by a grain boundary diffusion process and not by the intrusion of a liquid film. This was confirmed by a determination that the kinetics of penetration and embrittlement were the same in the 43-deg bicrystals upon exposure to bismuth vapor under conditions such that no bulk liquid phase would be thermodynamically stable. WhEN solid metals are exposed to a corrosive liquid-metal environment, the grain boundaries are sites of preferential attack. Depending on the temperature, the composition of the liquid, and the composition, structure, and state of stress of the solid, a number of modes of attack are possible. This paper reports a study of the kinetics of intergranular penetration and embrittlement of high-purity nickel bicrystals upon exposure to bismuth which, together with an earlier study by Cheney, Hochgraf, and Spencer,&apos; demonstrates that there are at least two modes of intergranular attack possible in the Ni-Bi system. In the study by Cheney et al., columnar-grain specimens of 99.5 pct pure nickel were exposed to liquid bismuth presaturated with nickel in the temperature range 670" to 1050°C. They found that the majority of the boundaries, which were predominantely high-angle boundaries, were penetrated by capillary liquid films, the attack proceeding by a process which will be termed grain boundary wetting. This process occurs in a stress-free solid when twice the liquid-solid surface tension is less than the surface tension of the grain boundary,* i.e., when 2yLs < YGB In this case the penetration of the grain boundary by the liquid occurs at a relatively rapid rate, resulting in the severe embrittlement of a polycrystalline solid. Grain boundary wetting is a common mode of intergranular attack in systems in which the lower melting component is relatively insoluble in the solid, but the solid has an appreciable solubility in the liquid, for example, the Ni-Bi system, Fig. 1. In systems of this type at temperatures above the range of stability of any intermetallic phases, once the liquid is saturated with respect to the solid so that no gross solution occurs, chemical gradients are small, and surface tensions become major driving forces for attack, provided the solid is stress-free. The results of Cheney et al. appear to be typical of those encountered when grain boundary wetting occurs.&apos; Capillary films were observed in the boundaries after quenching from the exposure temperature. The mean depth of penetration increased linearly with time, and the activation energy for the process was found to be 22 kcal per g-atom. In a study of the Cu-Bi system Yukawa and sinott4 found that the depth of penetration of bismuth into high-purity copper bicrystals of orientations from 22 to 63 deg of tilt about (100) at 649°C ranged from 0.05 to 0.25 in. after a 12-hr anneal. This corresponds to a linear rate of 6 to 15 X 10~6 cm per sec. At the same reduced temperature of 0.68 the rate for the Ni-Bi system&apos; was 7 x lo-&apos; cm per sec. In another study of the Cu-Bi system, Scheil and schess15 determined the kinetics of grain boundary wetting in hot-worked commercial rod. While there were several complicating factors present in this study, there is general agreement with the above results. The kinetics of penetration were linear, the activation energy was 20 kcal per g-atom, and at 650°C the rate of wetting was 2 to 5 x 10-6 cm per sec. FERRITES are sintered metallic oxides of the spinel structure type1 and belong to the class of soft ferromagnetic materials. Similar to a ceramic, they can be formed and fired to a dense body, exhibiting a high electrical volume resistivity ranging from 10 90 10&apos; ohm-cm as compared with 10-6 hm-cm for some of the metallic magnetic materials. This high resistivity, with resulting low eddy current losses, finds special application at high frequencies. The dispersive susceptibility of ferrites at microwave frequencies has also led to many applications in this field. Where high resistivity with high permeability is desirable, ferrites are used in low frequency applications. During the last few years ferrites exhibiting rectangular hysteresis loops have been developed for computer and magnetic memory systems. The general formula for ferrites is MeFe2O4 where Me is a divalent metal ion such as Ni, Zn, Mg, Mn, Cu, Cd, and Fe. Only two of these ferrites are nonferromagnetic, namely, those with Zn and Cd. Solid solutions can be formed between different ferrites, and it is of interest to note that solid solutions of a ferromagnetic ferrite with a nonferromagnetic ferrite yield much better magnetic materials than the basic ferrite body. In general, it can be said that the solid solution formation between ferrites has widened the field of ferrite synthesis and has led to methods of preparing materials with a large variety of magnetic properties. During the last two decades the synthesis of ferromagnetic oxides has been the object of extensive research, but commercial production has been started only within the last ten years. Along with more fundamental studies, there remains the never- ending task of developing ways to realize the optimum characteristics of materials in large-scale production. Ordinarily, to produce a ferrite material it is necessary for the constituent oxides to be mixed intimately, pressed, and then fired at temperatures above 1000°C. Ferrite Synthesis: Formation of a basic ferrite by solid state reaction from Fe,O, and a monoxide such as NiO, under normal atmospheric conditions, is governed by a progressive diffusion of cations between adjacent particles of the constituents. Firing temperature, furnace atmosphere, and cooling can vary the magnetic properties, however. If, for example, a dioxide, a sesquioxide, or an oxide of the Me0 type is substituted for the monoxide, the reaction mechanism becomes more complex and extremely dependent on atmospheric conditions and firing cycles. Wilfred Sykes, president of the Inland Steel Co., of Chicago, presided, with C. K. Leith and Clyde Williams as vice-chairmen, Mr. Williams presiding over the latter part of the meeting. On the Auditorium stage in the Engineering Societies Building was a formidable corps of "experts," with an audience of several hundred to hear what they had to say and to ask questions.

AS always when metallurgical operations are conducted within or close to agricultural and stock-raising regions, the question of damage due to fume and smoke presented itself when the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation&apos;s new smelter commenced to operate in La Oroya in 1922, For more than twenty years the Corporation had operated its old plant close to Cerro de Pasco without encountering difficulties from smoke claims, owing to the fact that it was in an open plain where more or less constant air currents carried and dissipated the smoke over large areas, affording ample dilution. But Oroya is in a deep canyon formed by four contributing valleys up and down which the smoke travels for long distances in a more or less concentrated form. Though the altitude of Oroya is more than 12,000 ft., and the surrounding country rises to much greater elevations, nevertheless there exists there a large and important stock-raising industry and also a considerable development in agriculture, consisting of the cultivation of potatoes, barley, etc.

AN often repeated criticism of the profession of engineering is that it is as a whole it lacks solidarity. organization, co-ordination, and leadership. Significantly, the critic, are all engineers. Other members of the body politic either do not know about the absence of organization or they do not care. If engineers have no organization they have a plethora of organizations. There exist in the United State, today some 350 societies. institutes. clubs, associations, and councils of engineers and engineering technologists and this number excludes several hundred local chapters of national societies. trade associations, and local engineers&apos; clubs of purely social character- Successful engineers must be proficient in analyzing, planning, and co-ordinating. but it is generally admitted that for their profession as a whole their success in this respect has been indifferent.

DURING colonial times, Brazil was famous for the richness of her alluvial gold deposits. Paul Ferrand has estimated that the gold produced during the period from 1700 to 1820 was the equivalent of some 64 million pounds sterling. Since that time, most of the more prolific alluvial deposits have been exhausted. A few gold mines are still func-tioning, notably the Morro Velho mine, which is one of the deepest mines in the world. Today, the gold production of Brazil is insignificant when compared with world figures, but there are still many gold-bearing regions and it is probable that in at least some of them profitable returns would result from an exploitation program taking advantage of all the most modern innovations in gold mining and ore treatment on a large scale. In order to demonstrate the value of some of these abandoned pros-pects and stir up interest in increasing the national gold production, the government has stimulated research. Experimental plants have been and are being established in various places, and tests on large quantities of ores are being carried out on a semicommercial basis. The Geological Survey of the State of Minas Geraes is very active in this line and the Federal Institution is also showing an increased interest in the matter. One of the lesser known gold-bearing regions of Brazil is in the vicinity of Lavras, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Gold was first reported from this region in the early part of the nineteenth century. In 1811, D. João VI sent an experienced prospector from Minas Geraes to investi-gate the validity of the reports. Power is furnished to the Climax Molybdenum Co. by the Public Service Co. of Colorado over two 100,000-volt lines to a bank of three 3333-kva. transformers 100/13.8 kv. These transformers are so designed that with the addition of forced cooling their capacity may be increased 33? per cent at 12,000-ft. altitude. Under present conditions, these transformers are operated at 140 Per cent of their rating with forced air cooling. On the secondary side of this bank there is a 15-kv., 1200-amp. Westinghouse oil circuit breaker provided with automatic reclosing relays allowing three successive short circuits before lockout. From this breaker 13.8-kv. power is transmitted to a central switching station (Fig. I) where all circuits radiate to the different operations of the property. Each circuit is protected by a 23-kv., 600-amp. oil circuit breaker with by-pass and isolating disconnecting switches. Mine Power at 13.8 kv. enters the mine through a ventilation raise over a three-conductor, size 1-0 varnished cambric insulated, leaded, steel-wire armored cable, insulated from 17 kv. This power is received and distributed through one switching station and four underground substations, shown in Fig. 2. No. 370 substation (Fig. 3) contains three a 13,800/440-volt, single- phase Pyranol transformers protected on the high-voltage side by a 600-amp. manually operated oil circuit breaker. This station serves 20 slusher-hoist motors, a 45-kw., three-phase, 220-volt electric furnace, a Massco hot miller for tempering and milling Timken detachable bits and a hoist with 175-hp motor on the No, 3 development shaft. Also at this shaft are three pumps. One two-stage pump, 1200 gal, per min., 500-ft. head, 3600 r.p.m., driven by a 150-hp. motor, is at the bottom of the shaft, Two deep-well pumps, 500 gal. per min., 500-ft. head, are at the collar of the shaft. under normal operation the one pumping 1200 gal. per min, is controlled by a float switch to take care of the water. If this pump fails, or if its capacity is insufficient, the first 500-gal. pump is automatically started1 and if still more capacity is needed the second 500-gal. pump automatically starts. Time delay relays are provided on the deep-well pumps, so that if power fails the column will have time to drain before the Pumps restart. On failure of any Of these, an alarm is sounded in the train dispatcher&apos;s office, so that mechanics can be sent to ascertain the cause of failure and make repairs. The cable from No. 37&apos; substation is run to the switching station, in which are four 15-kv., 600-amp. direct-current sole-noid-operated oil circuit breakers. The current for Operating and tripping is furnished by a 125-volt storage battery. All breakers are operated from the switchboard in the compressor room. Studies of the effect of size of the specimen on the change of slopes of Stages I and 11 by surface removal showed that the change of Stage I was independent of size with respect to the polishing rate; however, the change in the slope of Stage 11 with polishing rate increased directly in proportion to the surface area. The removal of the surface during the test affected the plastic deformation characteristics of gold, aluminum, and zinc single crystals and polycrystalline aluminum. The apparent activation energy of aluminum was found to be decreased markedly by removing the surface during the deformation process. In previous papers1-3 it was shown that the surface played an important role in the plastic deformation of metals. By removing the surface layers of a crystal of aluminum by electrolytic polishing during tensile deformation, it was found that the slopes of Stages I, II, and III were decreased and the extents of Stages I and II were increased when the rate of metal removal was increased. By removing a sufficient amount of the surface layer after a specimen had been deformed into the Stage I region, upon reloading, the flow stress was the same as the original critical resolved shear stress and the extent of Stage I was the same as if the specimen had not been deformed previously. The slope of Stage I was decreased 50 pct and that of Stage 11 decreased 25 pct when the rate of metal removal was 50 X 10"5 ipm. These data show that in Stage I the work hardening is controlled almost entirely by the surface conditions, while in Stages 11 and III both surface conditions and internal obstacles to dislocation motion are important. It appears that during the egress of dislocations from the crystal, a fraction of them becomes stuck or trapped in the surface regions and a layer of a high dislocation concentration is formed. This layer would not only impede the motion of dislocations, but would provide a barrier against which dislocations may pile up. In this case, there will be a stress, opposite to that of the applied stress, imposed on the dislocation source and dislocations moving in the region beyond this layer. It has been found convenient to refer to this layer as a "debris" layer. The "debris" layer may be similar to the dislocation tangle observed by thin-film electron microscope techniques.4 Reported in this paper are the results of studies on the effects of removing the surface during plastic deformation on aluminum crystals of various sizes. The effects of the surface on the yield point behavior of gold and high-purity aluminum crystals as well as the creep behavior were also determined. The effects of surface removal on polycrystalline aluminum (1100-0 and 7075-T6) are also reported. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE For those portions of the investigation involving creep and tensile specimens, single crystals, having a 3-in. gage length and a nominal 1/8-in. sq cross section, were prepared by a modified Bridgman technique using a multiple-cavity graphite mold. The single crystals were prepared from materials which had initial purities of 99.997, 99.999, 99.999, and 99.999 pct for Al, Cu, Zn, and Au, respectively. The aluminum specimens for the size effect studies were prepared through the use of a three-tier mold in which crystals having a cross section of 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 in. were grown from a common seed. The mold design was arranged so that one 1/2-in. crystal, two 1/4-in. crystals, and four 1/8-in, crystals of the same orientation could be cast. With this technique, it was possible to obtain only one set of crystals with the same orientation. Because of this limitation, it was not possible to determine both the changes of extent and slope of the various stages since a large number of crystals of the same orientation would have been required. Instead, only the change of slope as a function of the rate of metal removal was studied by abruptly altering the current density of the electrolytic polishing bath at various strains within the regions of Stages I and 11. The experimental techniques used for the tensile studies were essentially the same as those used previously.1,3 The specimens were deformed in a 200-lb Instron tensile machine, usually at a rate of 10-5 sec-5. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-A1 alloys has been measured up to the solubility limit for formation of aluminum nitride using the Sieverts method. The activity coefficient of nitrogen decreases slightly with increasing aluminum content in the range of 0 to 4 wt pct Al. Based on a nitride composition, AlN, the standard free energy of formation of aluminum nitride from fhe elements dissolved in liquid iron has been determined to be: ?F" = -59,250 + 25.55 T in the range from 1600º to 1750ºC. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys and the interaction of nitrogen with dissolved alloying elements in liquid iron have been the subject of a number of research investigations.&apos; Most of this work, however, has been reported for concentrations well below those necessary for the formation of the alloy nitride phase. Data in the concentration region near the solubility limit of the alloy nitride, particularly for systems exhibiting stable nitrides, are important in evaluating the denitrifying power of various alloying elements. They are also useful in determining the stability of a given nitride if it is to be used as a refractory to contain liquid iron alloys. In view of the importance of aluminum as a deoxidizing agent in commercial steelmaking and the fact that its nitride, AIN, is a highly stable compound and has merited some consideration as an industrial refractory, the following investigation was undertaken. The use of the Sieverts technique provided a measurement of the equilibrium nitrogen solubility in liquid Fe-A1 alloys as a function of nitrogen gas pressure up to 3.85 wt pct A1 in the temperature range of 1600º to 1750°C. The values obtained by the Sieverts method were checked by means of a quenching method in which liquid iron was equilibrated with an A1N crucible under a known partial pressure of nitrogen gas, and the solubility of A1N in liquid iron determined by chemical analysis. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The theoretical considerations involved in determining the solubility product of a solid alloy nitride phase in liquid iron by measuring the point of departure of the nitrogen gas solubility from Sieverts law have been discussed by Rao and par lee.&apos; The principal problem is to determine the variation of nitrogen solubility in an alloy as a function of the pressure of nitrogen gas over it with sufficient precision to establish the break point in the curve at the solubility limit of the alloy nitride phase. A fairly large number of data points are required to do this. A second problem is the determination of the composition of the precipitated solid nitride phase. This is necessary in order to define completely the thermodynamic relationships. The Sieverts apparatus used to make the nitrogen solubility measurements in this investigation is of essentially the same design as that described by Pehlke and E1liott.l The charge materials were Ferrovac-E high purity iron supplied by Crucible Steel Co. and 99.99+ pct pure aluminum. Recrystal-lized alumina crucibles were used, and were not attacked by the liquid alloys. The hot volume of the system which was measured for each melt ranged from 46 to 50 standard cu cm and was found to decrease linearly with decreasing pressure and with increasing temperature. The temperature coefficient of the hot volume at 1 atm pressure of argon gas was essentially constant for all experiments at a value of -6 X 10-3 cu cm per "C. The melt temperature was measured with a Leeds and Northrup disappearing filament type optical pyrometer sighted vertically downward on the center of the melt surface. The temperature scale was calibrated against the observed melting point of pure iron taken as 1536°C. The emissivity of all melts was assumed to be that of pure iron, taken as 0.43. The charge weights ranged from 110 to 140 g and the range of aluminum contents covered was from 0 to 3.85 wt pct. Aluminum additions were made as 12 to 15 wt pct A1-Fe master alloys previously prepared in the system under purified argon. The compositions of the master alloys were checked by chemical analysis and found to be in agreement with the charge analyses. Vertical cross sections of the master-alloy ingots were used as charge material for the equilibrations in order to minimize the effect of any segregation which might have occurred during solidification of the master alloys. Pilot-plant and laboratory tests were made on blends of steel plant flue dust and portland cement to determine whether the flue dust could be pelletized for use as a source of iron in dry process cement manufacture. Strength and setting time results showed that an acceptable agglomerate can be made with a Type II portland cement binder. Abrasion-resistant and well-sized pellets were made in a horizontal drum, using a simulated closed circuit, with a binder content of 7.5% and a moisture content below 15%. Pellet quality was found to be relatively insensitive to changes in binder concentration above 5%. Simulations of stockpiling and weathering indicate that little difficulty would be encountered with use of the flue dust pellets in cement plants.
