LOCKE, Cambridge, Mass.-In this country, we have come to think that we should use smaller size of feed in our ball-mills. I will admit that a ball-mill is not comparable to a tube-mill, as conditions may not be the same, but there we have an unusual demonstration of the advantage of a coarser feed. Further investigation along this line is going to lead to some valuable results. The authors have overcome the difficulty of this coarse feed by taking out what I would call the difficult lumps, It is not clear from the paper whether many of these difficult lumps' may not be 'reduced portions of their grinding media. H. W. HARDINGE, New York, N. Y.-The idea is not exactly new because in 1911 they used the miner to reduce the finer material. We proceeded three or four years using many tons, about 15 tons. or nearly the same proportion of ore to grinding medium. Another thing to be taken into account is the hardness of the ore being ground. In South Africa, the transportation costs must be, taken into account. They are also making progress in the method of using tube-mills and ball-mills instead of stamps. Experiments are to be conducted with 10-ft. diameter mills there, with the object of increasing the mass action and agitation which, as has been demonstrated under different circumstances, increases the overall efficiency.

CERTAIN features of the response of copper and brass to deformation and recrystallization remain obscure. The textures obtained on rolled sheet are listed by Schmid and Boas1 as: No adequate explanation has been advanced for the presence of the secondary deformation texture of copper and its absence in brass or for the origin of the cubic recrystallization texture of copper.2 A recent publication3 attempted to rationalize the above empirically described annealing texture of brass on the basis of retention of the (110) [112] rolling orientation plus twinning about the central octahedral poles of the usual secondary (110) [115] orientation. The difference in the textures of annealed copper as compared to 70-30 brass is also shown by the difference in the position of ears for drawn copper, at o° and 90°, as compared with drawn brasses, at 45°, for all compositions between 90-10 and 70-30.4 Data on individual crystals are as yet too few to permit of an analysis of these textures comparable to that of mild steel as made by Barrett and Levenson.5 EXPERITMENTAL METHODS The materials studied included copper specimens cut from the central, equiaxed crystal portion of a tough-pitch wirebar; brass made from this copper and high-purity (99.99 per cent) zinc including alloys of 7 per. cent, 15 per cent, 24 per cent, 29 per cent and 36 per cent Zn and large single crystals of 70-30 brass. Sections ¼ in. thick of the cast polycrystalline copper and brasses were reduced 40 per cent by rolling, recrystallized to a common grain size of 0.045 mm. and then rolled directly to foil 0.002 in. thick. Hardness readings employing both the Vickers and Rockwell machines were taken at intervals during the reduction. For comparison, similar specimens were cross-rolled-i.e., turned through 90 for each pass-and comparable hardness data were secured. Finally sections from the single crystals of brass were cut to obtain the following initial orientations; these sections were rolled, hardness data secured and a complete micrographic record of structural changes obtained:

BASIC mineral commodities may be divided into two general classifications in their market or price characteristics. In one class are commodities sold on a world-wide basis, as gold, silver, nickel, asbestos and petroleum, and in the second are those produced and sold locally. Of course, no precise line of demarcation exists between the two; coal, for instance, belongs more or less in both. If there are enough producers of any commodity to prevent control of production by any one person or group, a free market then exists and the price in a buyer's market is determined by the most favored producer-meaning the producer, with the lowest production cost or the lowest cost of transportation, or both, to the particular market, or place of use. With minerals in the first classification, their high intrinsic value far outweighs the transportation cost and a uniform market price is accepted as an essential element in the economy of distribution. But with common minerals of small. intrinsic value and relatively high transportation costs, economists are reluctant to admit that a uniform price may also be an essential element in distribution.

WHILE much geological work and drilling have been done in Venezuela, the incompleteness of geological evidence obtainable and the restricted areas in which drilling has been done make any estimates of oil resources extremely speculative. Nevertheless, it is felt that the data given are justified, in the belief that the ideas of a geologist familiar with the region are better than those of a promoter. The oldest beds of interest to oil men are those of the Cretaceous, which are well developed in eastern Venezuela and about parts of Lake Maracaibo. In both cases, a hard massive limestone is overlain by a great thickness, most of which is shale. In the west, in places this shale is more than 2000 ft. (610 m.) thick, while in the east it may attain 3500 ft., (1067 m.). The limestone and parts of the shale are oil producing. In the east, the Tertiary where present is almost entirely covered by the Quarternary, but in the west it is well developed. In probable unconformity over the Cretaceous shales is found a series of sandstones and shales, which may beg called the lower coal series. It is well developed southwest of the lake, where it is the oil container, and is probably the lowest series exposed east of the lake. Above this is the Pauji shale, which is probably the point of origin of all the oil east of Lake Maracaibo and in the State of Falcon. It has a thickness of about 3000 ft. (914 m.) in the Mene Grande region. The upper coal series is developed as a great thickness of sands, shales, and clays, with some partly consolidated limestone. Its thickness may be as great as 10,000 ft. It is the oil container of the Falcon-El Mene region and a probable location for oil in some of the area about the lake. It may or may not include the so-called Maracaibo series in which the oil is found at Mene Grande. Over much of Venenzuela, the Quarternary is present in unknown thickness, which probably is not great. It obscures oil structure in all cases and presents the greatest hazard of oil exploration for the fields which probably exist below.

The evaluation of certain reser-voir properties, such as porosity and fluid saturation, from electrical well surveys has been widely accepted in petroleum engineering. Various investigators have established relationships between these properties and certain parameters which affect the response of the electrical log. Among these are the resistivities of the mud, its filtrate, and its filter cake. In 1949, Patnode1 established a relationship between the resistivities of the mud and filtrate. The well logging service companies have contributed relationships for the mud-mud cake resistivities2,3 These have been valuable since it was the practice to measure only resistivity of mud at the well site. During the mid-1940's the industry began drilling wells with oil-emulsion drilling fluids. These were conventional aqueous muds with a dispersed oil phase. Since 1950, oil-emulsion muds have been used on an increasing number of wells each year. However, the practice of measuring only the resistivity of the mud at the well site has continued, and the mud filtrate and mud cake resistivities have been determined by the above-mentioned relationships. Service companies are now equipped to measure all three resistivities at the well site. An investigation was conducted on the resistivities of oil-emulsion muds, mud filtrates, and mud cakes to determine if these values conformed to the relationships for aqueous muds. TYPES OF MUDS Fifty-one oil-emulsion mud samples were prepared in the laboratory following a standard manual' published by a leading mud company. The diesel oil in the samples varied from 5 to 50 per cent, the majority of the samples being in the 10 per cent region. The basic aqueous mud types which were converted to oil-emulsion muds were commercial clay and bentonite muds, low pH and high pH, caustic-quebracho treated muds, and lime treated muds. The emulsions were stabilized by dispersed solids, lignins, lignosulfo-nates, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, or sulfonated petrolatum. It is worthy of note that after a quiescent period of two weeks at room temperature all samples, regardless of emulsifying agent, remained stable. The make-up water for the muds was from the laboratory tap. Resistivities were varied by the addition of table salt to the water. A range of mud resistivities from 0.44 to 3.9 ohm-m was obtained in this way. Twenty-three field muds were tested. These covered the same range of mud types as did laboratory muds. Oil provinces of the Gulf Coast, South Texas, West Texas, Oklahoma, Montana, and Canada were represented. MUD TEST PROCEDURE Each mud was tested for density, viscosity, pH, and filter loss by standard testing techniques. The resistivity measurements were obtained with a Schlumberger EMT meter. This meter required small volumes of sample, e.g., 2 mm. Filtrate was obtained from a Standard Baroid fil-ter press at the end of a 30-minute test. The filter cake from the same test was used for cake resistivity measurements. Mud, filtrate, and cake samples were heated to 100" F in a constant temperature water bath prior to measurement of resistivities. RESULTS The relation between mud resistivity (Rm) and mud filtrate resistivity (Rmf) is shown in Fig. 1. The solid line represents an average for the data. The equation of this line is Rmf =0.876 (Rm) 1.075 . . (1) Arbitrary limits, indicated by the dashed curves, have been set. The majority of the data falls within these limits, but some points do lie outside the limits. The approximate equation Rmt = 0.88 Rm , . . . . (2) will give satisfactory results within these limits. The data on mud cake resistivity Rmc is shown in Fig. 2. The solid line is an average for the data. The equation for the line is Rmc = 1.306 (Rm)0.88 The dashed lines are arbitrary limits on the data. Within these limits, Eq. 3 may be simplified to Rmc = 1.31 Rm . . . . (4) DISCUSSION The limiting curves in Figs. 1 and 2 represent maximum deviations of ±25 per cent. Thus the use of the average curves can introduce considerable error. There is no substitute for accurate measurements of mud, mud cake, and mud filtrate resistivities at the well site. The mud sample tested should be representative of the mud opposite the formation being logged. The average mud filtrate resistivity curve of Fig. 1 is reproduced in Fig. 3 with two curves which have been published for clay-base aqueous muds2,3. The latter curves were determined from average values of a large number of drilling fluids. The three curves have essentially the same slope and the differences between them are from 7 to 22 per cent. Comparison is made only to illustrate the possibility of error

Experience has taught us that Nature does not readily give up her treasures, but the ingenuity of man in the field of techologic progress is required to find and efficiently exploit these resources. History has also demonstrated that with advancing technologic knowledge the. world has become progressively richer in its resources. Those that could not be commercially exploited are now being turned to beneficial use. Through expanding technology and the use of substitutes and synthetics, availability of the world's sources of natural wealth is today many times that of a hundred or a thousand years ago. And so it is with petroleum. Technology is also the great multiplier of our petroleum resources. Through improvements in the art of finding, drilling, and producing, our ability to meet rapidly increasing demands over the last quarter century has been maintained. On the other hand, had our

THE first year to which the Revenue Act of 1936 has applied is now passed. It is appropriate to try to give some calm thought to the plan of Federal income taxation as now imposed and what it will mean to the business and industry of the country if this plan of taxation is continued unchanged. Whether or not we like to pay these taxes is beside the point. Taxes are high and may be expected to be high for many years. The important question is whether the taxes to be imposed will destroy or injure business enterprise and development, and, in so doing, lower the standards of employment, living, comfort, and welfare of our people. The power to tax is the power to destroy. That destruction may come suddenly as a cyclone, or slowly as dry rot. What, if any, features are there in the present plan of Federal income taxation that have these destructive tendencies? A few of the points follow that seem to call for consideration.

An extremely fine subgrain structure found in aluminum and aluminum alloys is shown and a method for revealing this structure is described. The appearance and some of the characteristics of this structure are described and the possible significance of subgrain structure in terms of chemical, electrochemical, and metallurgical processes is considered. GRAINS and grain boundaries, which constitute the principal manifestations of the crystalline aggregates known as metals, play such an important part in determining the characteristics and properties of metals and alloys that their nature and behavior have long been of much concern to the met-allographer. Many investigators have speculated on the possible existence of a finer structure within the usual grain structure and, through X-ray diffraction and metallographic techniques, have revealed evidence that such finer structures exist. Among these structures are the mosaic blocks and domains described by Burgers1 and others in their contributions on crystalline structure and the dislocation theory, the small units associated with polygoniza-tion described by Cahn,2 and the intragranular blocks revealed more recently by Lacombe and Beaujard.3 his paper describes some novel methods for clearly revealing a very fine granular substructure within the usual grains of pure aluminum and aluminum alloys. It also compares the characteristics and behavior of this subgrain structure with those of the ordinary grain structure and gives some examples of the manner in which this substructure may influence the characteristics of aluminum alloys. Metallographic investigations of aluminum and its alloys have dealt extensively with the functions and behavior of grains and grain boundaries and have evolved a definite concept of the relation between grain structure, orientation and physical, mechanical, chemical, and electrochemical behavior. During the examination of etched samples, a roughening or mottling of the body of certain grains has occasionally been observed. Such roughening obviously represented differential attack by the etching solution, but its true significance was not at first realized. It is now known that this roughening probably rep- resented a subgrain structure, although the particular etching treatments used were not capable of revealing this subgrain structure clearly. Also, in practically all cases, the subgrains were apparently far too small to be resolved by the light microscope. Recently, a method has been developed for revealing clearly the subgrain structure of most aluminum alloys. This method is somewhat unique in that it eliminates much of the usual tedious mechanical polishing and the attendant danger of a surface layer of flowed metal and at the same time is simple, rapid, and effective. It involves the use of the Alcoa R5 Bright Dip, a patented chemical polishing treatment licensed by Aluminum Co. of America. This treatment produces a bright, highly polished surface at least the equal of any mechanical polish and also etches the subgrain boundaries as well as the ordinary grain boundaries to reveal both the grain and subgrain structure simultaneously. Metallographic specimens to be examined are taken through the customary grinding and polishing operations used for aluminum alloys.' The usual care required in the final polishing operation to prevent a flowed surface layer and to obtain a high polish is not necessary, however, because any flowed layer is eliminated and a high polish is produced by the final immersion in the Alcoa R5 Bright Dip. Depending on alloy type, this dip takes from a few seconds to about 3 min, after which the sample is rinsed well, blown dry, and is ready for examination. The substructure can be revealed by some of the usual metallographic methods such as electropolish-ing or mechanical polishing and etching but no method has been found which is the equal of the new chemical polishing treatment. Mechanical polishing followed by the usual metallographic etching is not entirely satisfactory for revealing this substructure, probably because of the flowed surface layer resulting from the mechanical polish. If the usual etching methods are prolonged sufficiently to remove this layer, the specimen surface becomes quite rough and the substructure is not defined clearly.

In the summer of 1917 it was decided to fireproof the main Tramway hoisting shaft of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Butte, Mont. The shaft has three hoisting compartments and one pump compartment; it is timbered with 12 by 12-in. (30.5 by 30.5-cm.) fir timber, and is 2475 ft. (754 m.) deep. Subsidence and displacement of the surrounding country rock had produced exceedingly heavy ground, and had carried the shaft out of line, in several places, by as much as 2 ft. (0.6 m.) displacement. Constant repairing and realigning of the timbers had been necessary in order to maintain clearance for the cages. The most feasible method of fireproofing, therefore, seemed to be to cover the timbers with a coat of concrete applied with the cement gun. The cement gun, which is operated by compressed air at ordinary mine pressures, feeds a mixture of sand and cement through a hose to a nozzle having a water connection. The mortar in fluid form is thus sprayed upon the prepared surface in thin layers, which can be built up to any desired thickness. The cement gun can be set up at any convenient point; satisfactory results have been obtained with the nozzle a distance of 500 ft. (152 m.) from the gun. The shaft was thoroughly overhauled and the timbers put in the best possible state of repair. Between the 1000 and the 1400 levels, much loose ground lay against the shaft timbers on the north side; this was breast-boarded back and a 30-in. (76-cm.) reinforced-concrete retaining wall was erected, leaving a space of 12 in. (30.5 cm.) outside the shaft timbers to allow for future movements of the ground. For convenience in handling men and materials, it was arranged to concrete the auxiliary hoisting-cage compartment and the pump compartment first, using the cages of the main hoist to serve the cementing crews. The auxiliary cage was then available while the remainder of the shaft was being concreted. A tight partition of 2-in. (5.08-cm.) plank was erected between the auxiliary and the adjoining hoisting compartments, for better protection of men riding on the cages. The application of concrete made this

WHEN history is written, the year of the blitzkrieg will go down as giving aviation its greatest impetus. No perceptible drop in military business, even with cessation of hostilities abroad, seems likely. The combined air force of the U. S. Army and Navy on July 1 was approximately 5000 planes, as against 50,000 planes currently discussed as necessary. Observers at the fronts are giving designers and metallurgists back home some realistic ideas to shoot at. As conventional runways reveal the location of airports to enemy raiders, operating bases are now masked. Difficult, often muddy and rough landing strips, requiring strong landing gears and exacting take-off and maintenance characteristics, are the specifications of war. This is "old stuff" to numerous mining operators in mountainous jungle areas where gradients up to 8 per cent are in more or less common use in such mountain landing fields. Although airplane building is not readily adaptable to assembly-line methods, a trend towards mass productions is now in evidence. Incidentally, a U.S. Army "Curtiss P-40" requires about 10,000 man hours of work to complete and is tied together with 75,000 rivets. In an effort to find an oxidation-resistant alloy of molybdenum, binary and ternary alloys containing aluminum, chromium, cobalt, iron, nickel, silicon, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, and zirconium were screened. Fourteen other alloying additions were also tested. Many of the alloys were more oxidation-resistant than molybdenum, but none were entirely satisfactory. MOLYBDENUM oxidizes extremely rapidly above 1450°F in air. At 1800°F, a loss of metal at the rate of 0.1 in. in 4 hr is typical. The high speed of this oxidation may be judged by comparison with the oxidation rate of 0.1 in. per year (0.00005 in. in 4 hr), sometimes taken as the maximum permissible oxidation rate at 1800°F for a satisfactory Fe-Cr-Ni alloy. Great strides have been made in the development of coatings and cladding to protect molybdenum from oxidizing atmospheres. These developments in surface protection will undoubtedly make it possible to take advantage of the excellent hot strength of molybdellum and its alloys in many new applications. Still, even the best coating can protect molybdenum only as long as the surface layer is unbroken. Research was undertaken to determine whether an alloy of molybdenum could be found which would resist oxidation. Such an alloy would not deteriorate suddenly when the protective surface layer was destroyed in a small area. In seeking an alloy of molybdenum to resist oxidation, the physical properties of molybdenum could not be sacrificed entirely. The development of an alloy with the desired resistance to oxidation was not achieved. The information obtained on the effect of a large number of elements on the oxidation of molybdenum is, however, of value in the development of coatings. Indeed, many of the alloys tested for oxidation resistance were already known to have poor mechanical properties but were tested to aid in the development of coatings. Oxidation of Molybdenum The rapid oxidation of molybdenum is usually attributed to the volatility of Moo,,. Gulbransen and Wysong have shown that molybdenum oxidizes very slowly up to 850°F, the temperature at which the oxide film begins to evaporate. Melting as well as evaporation of molybdenum oxides promotes the oxidation of molybdenum. MoO melts at 1465°F. MOO, the oxide which is believed to form at the metal-oxide interface, combines with MoO, to form a eutectic having a melting point of 1432°F.' The liquid oxide, even if nonvolatile, could cause poor resistance to oxidation by allowing easy transport of molybdenum and oxygen ions through the oxide. Actually, a sudden increase in the rate of oxidation of molybdenum at 1460°F has been observed to coincide with the appearance of a liquid phase. The formation of a volatile oxide is not unique with molybdenum. The problem is also encountered with vanadium, tungsten, and some of the Pt-Pd group of metals. Vanadium not only forms the volatile V2O3 but, like molybdenum, forms a liquid oxide coating. Few attempts have been made, however, to prevent the rapid oxidation of these metals by alloying. Oxidation of Molybdenum Alloys At the beginning of this work, very little was known of the oxidation resistance of molybdenum alloys. It was known that molybdenum disilicide (with 37 pct Si) has extremely good oxidation resistance,' but this compound is so brittle that it has few uses. It is an effective protective coating for molybdenum when allowance can be made for its brittleness. Chromium was known to retard the oxidation of molybdenum,' but at least 50 pct Cr was necessary to have an appreciable effect. Other, unpublished, reports show that a few other alloys have been given preliminary tests, but the results have not been promising." Choice of Alloys to be Investigated An alloying element might be expected to protect molybdenum in either of two ways: Its oxide might combine with molybdenum oxide to form a stable, nonvolatile complex oxide (a molybdate); or the oxide of the alloying element might form in preference to molybdenum oxide, developing an impervious layer which would prevent the formation of a volatile molybdenum oxide. The knowledge available about the formation of molybdates was meager. Therefore, the initial study was made on alloys of molybdenum with elements having especially stable oxides. On this basis, binary and ternary alloys containing the following six elements were investigated: aluminum, chromium, titanium, zirconium, silicon, and vanadium. Nickel was also added as an alloying element. Although it does not form a more stable oxide than molybdenum, it does impart some oxidation resistance to copper and iron. Its inclusion in the study was fortunate because its alloys proved to be the most promising of those first tested. Apparently nickel formed a stable molybdate. Because nickel was effective in reducing the oxidation rate of molybdenum, the elements iron, cobalt, and tungsten were added to the list. The ten alloying elements mentioned form ten binary and 45 ternary alloying systems with molybdenum. A series of alloys was tested in each of these systems. In addition, at least one test was made on the effect of each of the following alloying elements:

In the present number of Mining and Metallurgy, issued on the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Institute, it appears appropriate to chronicle a few of the interesting incidents respecting its early life. We are fortunate in being able to cull the following notes from unpublished manuscripts of Doctor Raymond and Doctor Drinker, than whom no other members could have written with greater exactness and fidelity. THE seventh decade of the 19th century may be said to have marked an. era in the history of the world. Industrially and .commercially it was marked by the wide application and utilization of discoveries already made, which came to their full effect at this period in steamships, railways, telegraph and cable lines; the standardization of parts in machines, from watches to locomotives; the use of 'dynamite, antiseptic surgery, the open-hearth steel process, the compressed-air rock-drill, the electric generator, and the Gatling gun. Through the opening of the Suez canal in 1870 the maritime trade of the world was revolutionized, sailing vessels were supplanted by steamers, while ocean cables and ocean "tramps" brought about far more rapid movement of commerce than had before been experienced. Politically, this period was marked by the sudden birth of the German empire and the beginning of that intensive internal development of the national resources of that empire in preparation for colonial extension and war, the amazing result of which has been made evident by the recent world conflict. TAYLOR: I would like to ask Mr. Veasey whether the control of oil in pools includes royalties, and, if so, in case of a new pool how are you going to control, or rather how are you going to describe the limits of that pool?

GEOPHYSICAL methods as described in technical articles generally fail to answer the questions of prospectors and geologists as to which method they should apply and what information they may expect from their application. This article is an attempt to discuss the use of electrical methods with special reference to the prospecting for orebodies and the map¬ping of geologic structure. Especially on virgin ground, geological reconnaissance should precede electrical prospecting, with the object of outlining carefully the orebearing rock and determining the possibilities of elec¬trical prospecting. No electrical survey will then be carried out on ground which, for geological reasons, may be considered barren or where the electrical meth¬ods are inapplicable. As the success of electrical prospecting depends on the difference in conductivity between the ore and the country rock within which the orebody is inclosed, the conductivity of the two should be considered and de¬termined, if possible. The conductivity of an orebody depends on the distribution of conductive ore minerals and, in addition, on its size (length, width and depth). Most minerals with metallic luster show good electrical conductivity; for instance, the sulfides. Zinc-blende is an exception, but as it is often associated with the ore minerals of good conductivity (for instance, pyrite or galena), there is likelihood also of finding zinc.
