ONE of the most important and frequent calculations that the extractive metallurgist is called upon to make is that of the standard free energy change of a reaction (?F°). For many reactions of metallurgical interest, the lengthy arithmetical calculations have been eliminated by the use of free energy-temperature diagrams which have been constructed by Ellingham,1 Richardson and Jeffes,2 Kellogg,3 and Osborn4 (e.g., for oxides, sulphides, halides) from critical surveys of existing data. The speed and simplicity of making calculations with these graphs make them of great practical value and, this should be stressed, in the majority of cases no greater accuracy is obtained by the individual calculations from specific heat data, entropies, and heats of reaction. With the increasing industrial application of vacuum methods to the winning of metals, notably at present magnesium and the alkaline earth metals, it is necessary to calculate low metal vapor pressures above reaction mixtures. The existing free energy diagrams usually give values where the solid and liquid metals are at unit activity. To obtain the free energy change associated with the reaction Metal (solid or liquid) = Metal (gas) it is customary to calculate this from either vapor pressure equations or from the appropriate free energy functions. This paper presents graphically the free energies of vaporization of a number of metals of economic importance which can be used in conjunction with other free energy diagrams. Certain metals have been excluded on the following grounds: titanium, tungsten, molybdenum, and platinum have very high heats of vaporization and boiling points and the uncertainty of these values arising from difficulties of high temperature measurements makes free energy values of doubtful accuracy; the data for cobalt, vanadium, and zirconium are uncertain; finally, arsenic, antimony, and bismuth could not be conveniently included. because of the presence of mixtures of polyatomic and mona-tomic vapors in the temperature range considered. Free Energy Diagram In Fig. 1, the standard free energies of vaporization per mol (?F°T) have been plotted for the temperature range 0" to 2000°C for the reaction M (solid or liquid) = M (gas) The data have been obtained from the free energy functions — (F-H298)/T for the solid, liquid, and gaseous elements and the heats of vaporization at 298°K, i.e., ?H298 (vapor). The values of these functions have been taken without change from the recent critical survey by Brewer;' the bulk of this data is from Kelley7 with adjustments in the light of more recent work. Values of the function — (F-H298) /T at T = 298°, 500°, 1000°, 1500°, and 2000°K were employed. Where possible, a further independent value was obtained by using the boiling point, i.e., where ?F°T = 0. All calculations are based on the assumption that the metal vapors are monatomic and that the boiling points refer to those temperatures at which the partial pressure of the monatomic vapor above the metal is 760 mm. For the alkali metals, e.g., sodium, potassium, and lithium, diatomic gas molecules are present as minor species; details of these are discussed by Brewer." On the basis of the above values and allowing for the change in slope at the melting point, straight line graphs were constructed and extrapolated to 2000°C. The deviation from a straight line did not exceed ±500 cal, which in all cases appears less than the probable error in the ?F°T values.

The MacIntyre Development of the National Lead Co. is located at Tahawus, N. Y. The operations involve the mining and concentrating of a titaniferous iron ore to produce an ilmenite concentrate and a magnetite concentrate. Construction of the MacIntyre plant was commenced during the summer of 1941, when world conditions threatened to cut off the supply of Indian ilmenite. An open pit mining operation was developed and the crushing and milling equipment put in operation in July 1942. A general description of the operation was given in the Adirondack Issue of Mining and Metallurgy for November 1943. The metallurgy of the mill operation was described by Mr. Frank R. Milliken,* Plant Manager, National Lead Company, MacIntyre Development, and presented at the AIME New York Meeting, February 1948.

Deposits of high-silica kaolinite clays occur at many places in central Pennsylvania. These white clays were formed apparently by weathering of argillaceous quartzite and limestone. Their geology, distribution and use have been reported by Leighton.1 The larger deposits have been mined from time to time, and the clay, after washing to remove coarse sand, has found use as rubber filler, foundry clay, and in white cements. In general, the clay from these deposits contains too much grit (quartz) to be useful as paper filler, and the silica content is too high to make it useful as china clay for ceramic ware. Gravity methods for the separation of quartz from these clays have failed because of the extremely fine size of the quartz grains, but by the methods of froth flotation described in this paper these sandy kaolins can be made to yield a purified kaolinite that has a chemical composition close to that of good-grade Georgia kaolins, and is free enough from grit to be used as a paper filler. As by-products of the separation, a fine ( — 325-mesh) sand assaying 95.5 per cent SiO2, and a very fine (—3-micron) clay are produced. The possible ceramic uses of these products are being investigated at The Pennsylvania State College. Experimental Procedure The Sample.—The clay sample used in these tests was obtained from a small mine near Tyrone, Pa. It had already been washed to remove coarse sand, and represented the finished product of this small mine and washery. Microscopic examination showed that the clay was composed almost entirely of the minerals quartz and kaolinite, and that the quartz was present mostly in particles larger than one micron, while the kaolinite particles generally were less than 20 microns in size. The kaolinite and quartz particles were physically separable by blunging the clay in water with a suitable dispersant. Preparation of Flotalion Feed.—By the addition of NaOH in an amount equal to 3 lb. per ton of solids, the clay was completely dispersed in water. Flotation feed was prepared by allowing a dispersed suspension (10 per cent solids) of the clay to stand for the period of time required for a 2.5-micron particle of quartz to settle from the top of the container to the bottom. After this settling period the suspension was decanted from the settled solids. The settled solids were redispersed in water and the separation was repeated once. The two fine fractions were then combined. Thus the clay was divided into a fine and a coarse fraction by size separation at approximately 2.5 microns.* The fine frac- . tion was found to have a considerably lower sand content than the raw clay (Table I), and was not treated further. The coarse fraction formed the flotation feed for all the tests described in this paper. A size separation of this type can be

THE electrical conductivity of pure copper is markedly decreased by small amounts of impurity in solution. The magnitude of this effect has been very carefully determined by numerous investigators who studied a wide variety of impurity elements. Much of this work is summarized in an excellent review by Pawlek and Reichel.' The case of zinc impurity in copper is an exception to the above in that there has been no well-documented study of the effect using high-purity starting materials. The values for the effect of zinc on conductivity, which are usually taken from unpublished work by Skowronki, indicate that zinc in low concentration has no effect whatever in lowering the conductivity of pure copper. This effect, if true, is unusual since it is generally known that even in lowest concentration, impurities exert an effect on conductivity which is proportional to the amount dissolved. It is more reasonable to suspect that in the original work on the effect of zinc some of the zinc was oxidized out of solution during specimen preparation. The following experi- and calculated d-spacings based on the unit cell dimensions of Baenziger et al. Since the single crystal studies of Baenziger et al. were limited to (hk0) and (hk 1) data, it was not possible to Compare all the intensities of the powder and single crystal patterns. However, the strongest reflections of both studies, the (321) reflection, agree very well when the appropriate multiplicity factor is used. Good agreement was also found in a number of other reflections of lesser intensity. Despite the precautions taken in annealing the U6Fe powder, an appreciable amount of UO, was detected in the powder pattern after heat treatment. The powder pattern reported by Groganoand Clews is given in Table I. Except for the 3.15A line, which is the strongest line of UO,, their pattern, as far as it goes, compares favoEably with the data from this study. Gordon and Kaufmann have reported a diffraction powder pattern purported to be U, Fe but it bears very little resemblance to the patterns of Table I. ments were carried out to redetermine the effect of zinc on conductivity using high-purity starting materials and processing conditions capable of producing oxygen-free alloys. Materials used in the experiment were ASR 99.999 pct Cu and Cumingo 99.999 pct Zn. Four 1 lb melts were prepared with identical procedure in argon atmosphere with crucibles made from Speer No. 580 graphite. The compositions were 0.0, 0.1, 0.3 and 1.0 pct Zn. Standard No. 14 wire (0.064 in. diam) was made from these melts as follows. This paper deals with the practical application of the Dutch State Mines cyclone separator for fine-coal cleaning. The more important operating variables are discussed, and results of a number of continuous-scale tests on various fine coals with a 6-in. cyclone separator are given. Descriptions of the Cyanamid Pilot Plant and the 50 tph Cyclone Separator Plant at the Emma Washery in Holland are included. TODAY, as never before, the coal producers of this country are faced with the necessity for obtaining maximum yield of marketable coal of all sizes down to and including the finest. Particular interest is being displayed in a more effective means of recovering the finer sizes which in the past so often have been discarded to waste or treated by inadequate equipment. The reasons for this interest are easily understood. Rising mining costs have resulted in the increased use of mechanized equipment underground for full seam mining. This, in turn, means more refuse in the run-of-mine and also more fines in the feed going to the cleaning plant. Stringent antistream pollution laws now make it necessary at least to impound the fines, and usually it is a paying proposition to recover the coal from these fines before sending them to the storage area. Finally, the market and price of the finer sizes has increased, but at the same time specifications have tightened and the demand is for higher grade products. During the past four years a great deal of publicity has been given to this new process and apparatus for treating fine sizes of ores as well as coal. Excellent discussions of the apparatus itself and the theoretical aspects of the basic operating principles involved in its operation have been presented by M. G. Driessen,1-3 M. R. Geer and H. F. Yancey,4,5 J. W. Hyer6 and more recently by D. A. Dahlstrom8 as well as others.7,9-11 In view of this, it has been decided to include in the present paper only a brief description of the cyclone separator and its operating principles. This paper deals primarily with some of the more practical commercial aspects of the process and equipment required for its operation; the variables in the operation of the cyclone, their effect and means for control; and the results obtained with a 6-in. semicommercial size separator on a variety of fine coals, bituminous and anthracite, using finely ground magnetite for the separating medium solids. A description is included of the commercial-size cyclone separator pilot plant installed by the Dutch State Mines at its Emma mine in Holland, where finely ground slate is utilized as medium solids. Field of Application: The Dutch State Mines cyclone separator operates most efficiently on ores and coal in the size range of % in. to about 48 mesh. On some types of feed, effective separation can be made on sizes as small as 100 mesh, but up to the present, this may be considered exceptional. Depending upon the type of medium used, the specific gravities of separation can be varied within wide limits, up to as high as 2.70, if magnetite is used as medium. IN all branches of the chemical industry, corrosion plays a very costly part unless it is suitably com-batted, and as a result it is probably correct that chemical and design engineers are more corrosion conscious in the field of chemical industry than in others. Most metals occur in nature in combination with other elements. The refined or reduced state to which man converts them for his use, by removing the combining elements, leaves them in an unstable condition. Therefore in most of the media to which the metals are exposed they are constantly combining with the constituents of their environment, or in other words they are continually being corroded. Similarly, nonmetallic materials are corroded by undergoing chemical change. The rate at which corrosion takes place varies widely from metal to metal and medium to medium. In practically all cases the corrosion of metals in solutions (electrolytes) is electrolytic in nature and the rate of corrosion is dependent on many factors such as temperature, pressure, internal stresses, galvanic action, metal-ion concentration, and so on. In the chemical industry substances must be handled which are particularly corrosive to materials of construction. At the chemical plants of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd. (otherwise known as Cominco), situated at Trail, B. C., Canada, the following are some of the materials that have to be handled: Gases. Sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, oxygen, hydrogen fluoride, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, and oxides of nitrogen. Liquids. Solutions of ammonium sulphate, ammonium sulphite, ammonium nitrate, caustic soda and potash, sulphuric acid, nitric acid, hydrofluo-silicic acid, hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, aqua ammonia, and formic acid. Solids. Gypsum (containing phosphoric acid), ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate, phosphate rock, caustic soda, potash, and phosphate fertilizers.

Although mechanical appliances for the ventilation of mines have been known siuce very early times (one being mentioned in Agricola's De Re Metnllica, 1657), it is only within the last forty years that such appliances have been generally used. A great number of different ventilators have been invented and used, but the varions forms of centrifugal machines having proved their efficiency, have now almost conlpletely replaced all others. Most if not all of the machines in use in this country are of this class, being either open-periphery fans, or closed, with chimney and spiral casing, of a more or less modified Guibal type. The theory of such machines has been demonstrated by Mr. Daniel Murgue in Theories and Practice of Centrifugal Ventilating Machines, translated by A. L. Steavenson. His statement may be condensed thus : Let a = orifice in a thin plate, of such area that its resistance to the passage of a given quantity of air equals the resist ance of the mine. TWO years ago the Committee on Latin American Education Relations, Mineral Industries Education Division, started a study of mineral industries education in the Latin Americas. Information was obtainable only with great difficulty. Some information was available piecemeal but no complete resume had ever been assembled. Initial assistance was gained from the United States Office of Education and the Pan American Union. This, and first-hand knowledge of the writer, provided a list of colleges and universities which were believed to offer work lead. ing to a degree in one or more branches of the mineral industries. Detailed information could be obtained only by direct contact with each university through air mail service. Questionnaire letters were sent to officials of 34 colleges and universities. Twenty-one gracious replies were received. Fourteen of the colleges and universities concerned offer curricula in mining, five in metallurgy, three in petroleum, seven in geology, one in geographical engineering, one in topographical engineering, and one in geophysics. Two institutions offer advanced training in petroleum engineering. No institution offers any courses under the caption of ceramics or fuel technology.

DISCUSSION John G. Barry (Mexico)—"The Nerinea limestone," writes W. H. Triplett, p. 584, "is ... medium-bedded (0.5 to 1.0 m)...." This is the Zuloaga formation. It has always been described as thick-bedded (1.0 to 3.0 m). "Whether the marls and shales were less amenable to replacement," he goes on to say, ". . . is a matter of opinion." In general, it is probable that the thinner-bedded formations were less competent than the nearby thicker-bedded, so that the latter produced pre-mineral breccias when all were subjected to flexing stresses. With reference to Mr. Triplett's analysis, p. 584, under Lower Cretaceous, in the Taraises and Cupido formations some few horizons should be considered as possibly containing hidden orebodies. In the Potrero camp, shown on the general map in the northwestern part of Fig. 4, p. 587, several mineralized beds are known; they are found throughout the whole thickness of the Cuesta del Cura formation. With regard to intrusive rocks, p. 585, the general map, Fig. 4, shows that the Potrero and Noche Buena camps are near a third, monzonitic intrusive. It seems doubtful that the Aranzazu was any hotter than the Providencia camp. However, the former does contain large deposits of exogenetic silicates, which in large part occur within the Zuloaga limestone, as shown by Bergeats in a stereogram. At the Aranzazti camp the La Caja formation was only slightly changed, whereas it was altered highly at the Providencia, possibly en-dogenetically. That the temperatures at the Providencia camp were relatively high at one time is also shown by the tourmaline veinlets and lenses in the monzonite and by the garnets on Temeroso peak; high temperature mineralization has possibly been eroded. Maps and sections show that the Concepcion del Oro —Temeroso stock occupies the original locus of some 40 kms of sedimentary rocks. The remains of large roof pendants at Carmen and Animas indicate that stoping was active. Whether all the sedimentaries were stoped and assimilated presents a lively problem, a correlative of which would be an estimate of the original constitution of the invading instrusive rock. As to extrusive rocks, see p. 585, there is also a large thick area of the extrusives left near Noche Buena in the "La Caja" intramontane valley of the La Caja range. This place gave its name to the range. The volcanics are also said to occur in considerable amount in the Mazapil valley.'' Turning now to the remarks under Regional Structure, p. 586, as partly indicated on the general map, Fig. 4, the Mazapil Mountains of the Mazapil region are a continuous, U-shaped range including a northern leg of some 24 km, a southern leg of similar length, and a uniting base which lies to the East and which measures some 10 km in a S 20 E direction. Thus the U-shaped mountains are continuous through a length of 58 km and also contain one continuous anticline, the adjacent valleys being synclinal. The northern leg of the U is called the La Caja range, the base is called the Concepcion del Oro range, and the southern leg the Santa Rosa range. The ranges in northeastern Zacatecas and southern Coahuila contain anticlines and the valleys contain synclines, which where thin are necessarily highly compressed isoclines with very steep dips. Many of the anticlines also have isoclinal components which are overturned, original mushroom tops being indicated. The anticline in the base of the U of the Mazapil Region, Concepcion del Oro range, is a recumbent anticline, over to the ENE, with a necessarily subjacent recumbent syncline.

In the Potrero camp, shown on the general map in the northwestern part of Fig. 4, p. 587, several mineralized beds are known; they are found throughout the whole thickness of the Cuesta del Cura formation. With regard to intrusive rocks, p. 585, the general map, Fig. 4, shows that the Potrero and Noche Buena camps are near a third, monzonitic intrusive. It seems doubtful that the Aranzazu was any hotter than the Providencia camp. However, the former does contain large deposits of exogenetic silicates, which in large part occur within the Zuloaga limestone, as shown by Bergeats in a stereogram. At the Aranzazti camp the La Caja formation was only slightly changed, whereas it was altered highly at the Providencia, possibly en-dogenetically. That the temperatures at the Providencia camp were relatively high at one time is also shown by the tourmaline veinlets and lenses in the monzonite and by the garnets on Temeroso peak; high temperature mineralization has possibly been eroded. Maps and sections show that the Concepcion del Oro —Temeroso stock occupies the original locus of some 40 kms of sedimentary rocks. The remains of large roof pendants at Carmen and Animas indicate that stoping was active. Whether all the sedimentaries were stoped and assimilated presents a lively problem, a correlative of which would be an estimate of the original constitution of the invading instrusive rock. As to extrusive rocks, see p. 585, there is also a large thick area of the extrusives left near Noche Buena in the "La Caja" intramontane valley of the La Caja range. This place gave its name to the range. The volcanics are also said to occur in considerable amount in the Mazapil valley.'' Turning now to the remarks under Regional Structure, p. 586, as partly indicated on the general map, Fig. 4, the Mazapil Mountains of the Mazapil region are a continuous, U-shaped range including a northern leg of some 24 km, a southern leg of similar length, and a uniting base which lies to the East and which measures some 10 km in a S 20 E direction. Thus the U-shaped mountains are continuous through a length of 58 km and also contain one continuous anticline, the adjacent valleys being synclinal. The northern leg of the U is called the La Caja range, the base is called the Concepcion del Oro range, and the southern leg the Santa Rosa range. The ranges in northeastern Zacatecas and southern Coahuila contain anticlines and the valleys contain synclines, which where thin are necessarily highly compressed isoclines with very steep dips. Many of the anticlines also have isoclinal components which are overturned, original mushroom tops being indicated. The anticline in the base of the U of the Mazapil Region, Concepcion del Oro range, is a recumbent anticline, over to the ENE, with a necessarily subjacent recumbent syncline.

ON Thursday a most interesting symposium on "Gases in Metals" was held, with both morning and afternoon sessions. The morning was devoted principally to the considerations of the steel maker, the nonferrous field being taken up in the afternoon period. Dr. John Johnston, as chairman, introduced the subject with "A Short Analysis of the Gas-metal Problem and Its Practical Importance." He then introduced P. H. Brace who explained in considerable detail the various vacuum fusion and other methods in use at present, both here and abroad, in the study of "gases" in metals. He was fol¬lowed immediately by H. W. Graham on "The Effect of Oxygen in Steel." The papers elicited considerable discussion, the point being particularly noted by both Dr. Rawdon and Dr. Sauveur that a knowledge of "total oxygen" alone is not sufficient information for the metallurgist, distribution of oxygen being probably the more important. Dr. Johnston, in commenting on the lack of agreement among many of the methods now in use, such as the Ledebur and vacuum fusion, spoke of the contemplated plan of the Iron and Steel Division to have a number of standard samples analyzed by many laboratories by the various methods, the Bureau of Standards acting as a clearing house, so that more definite information may be obtained on the comparative accuracy of the method.

(Cleveland meeting, October, 1912.) LARGE deposits of titaniferous iron-ore occur at Caribou, an old silver-mining camp in Boulder county, Colo., 17 miles west by south of Boulder, and a few miles northwest of the tungsten-mines. Professor Regis Chauvenet 1 published a part analysis of the ore many years ago, but gave no description of the wall-rock. Caribou hill, which contains both the silver-bearing veins and the iron-ore deposits, is a low dome of gabbro surrounded by the Archaean schists and gneisses of the Front range of the Rocky mountains, the peaks of which, a few miles west of Caribou, attain an elevation exceeding 12,000 ft. The gabbro stock is roughly elliptical in outline, with approximate diameters of 1 and 3 miles. The crest of the dome is 10,500 ft. above sea-level, and the town and ore-deposits are 500 ft. lower. Outcrops of the iron-ore occur in the town and extend NW. for 2,000 ft., where they disappear under the swampy meadows of Caribou park. Portions of the deposit are covered by drift, but one continuous outcrop is 900 ft. long and from 200 to 250 ft. wide. A second deposit is 0.25 mile south of the town along the eastern slope of the hill. It is not as well defined as the north bed, but is approximately 1,000 ft. long and from 100 to 200 ft. wide. The easily disintegrated ore does not form prominent outcrops, but the outlines of the deposits are readily traced by the large amount of ore fragments that cover the ground. Trenches and pits sunk on the outcrop expose a roughly banded magnetic iron-ore, with pyroxene as the principal gangue-mineral. The Gabbro. The use of ultrasonics in forming emulsions is not new. As early as 1927 Wood and Loomis' reported preparation of emulsions with ultrasonics. In 1935 Rschevkin and Ostrawskyz described the use of great ultrasonic power in producing fine emulsions of various oils and paraffin in water. Recently Oyama and Tanakahmployed ultra-emulsification to increase the effectiveness of sodium ethyl xanthate in flotation of chalcopyrite and galena. An emulsion is a two-phase system consisting of two incompletely miscible liquids, the one being dispersed as finite droplets in the other. The dispersed liquid is known as the internal or discontinuous phase, and the surrounding liquid is termed the external or continuous phase. There are two types of emulsions; one is oil-in-water (O/W) and the other water-in-oil (W/O). The word oil refers to the liquid other than water. Circumstances exist in which the emulsion type is not clearly defined, and the internal and external phases both contain portions of the opposite phase. This is said to be a dual emulsion. Among the many hypotheses', 6v proposed for the formation of emulsions, the Bancroft's adsorbed film or double interfacial tension theory is widely accepted. Bancroft ""educed that in the process of emulsification the interfacial tension between oil and water is lowered by the formation of an emulsifying film, which contains the adsorbed molecules and/or ions from the emulsifying agent and the two liquids.

LAGGING technology and the slow spread of information have been the chief obstacles to widespread participation in minimizing the industrial pollution load. These obstacles can be conquered by fact finding and applied research. There are three aspects to the problem of water-borne mineral waste: to minimize the amount being thrown away, to select a predisposal treatment, and to use the products or dispose of them. It is often possible to minimize the waste by making very minor changes in the process that produces it. For example, a manufacturer of automobile bumpers greatly reduced the dragout 'from a plating bath by modifying the design and position of two boltholes.' A plater of automobile hubcaps installed a drainage bar and decreased the loss of chrome-plating solution to the rinse water by about 80 pct.' The mill at a western mine found it possible to discard 60 to 70 pct of an ore with minimum treatment," so that the processing effort could be concentrated on a high-graded slime, with significant reduction in costs and improvement in recovery. The possibilities for waste reduction through process changes are limited only by the imagination. A recent patent points out the advantages of using No. 1 fuel oil instead of water in wet-process cement making;& the fuel oil presumably has better properties than water for this purpose and is said to be almost com'pletely recovered or utilized, so that there is no waterborne waste. Recycling to reduce wastes and improve process economy is very well illustrated in vanadium and uranium recoveries from relatively low grade ore. Ores containing 6 pct calcium carbonate were found to give poor vanadium recovery by the salt-roasting process because the vanadium was converted to water-insoluble calcium vanadate. Following the salt-roasting process, sulfuric acid was used to leach the uranium. Enough calcium sulfate was formed

WIDESPREAD interest in the better utilization of coal is indicated by the attendance of over seventeen hundred men interested in the pro- cessing and utilization of coal and its by-products, at Pittsburgh, Nov. 15 to 18. The conference was truly international in scope and of a scientific character, and must be considered a real success. There were dele- gates--official and unofficial-from America, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, and Sweden. Several Federal and 28 State departments had representatives, also many colleges and universities, and many leading industrial and mining corporations throughout the country. A feature of the sessions was that papers were mostly read in full and attentively listened to, although in some cases they were of a technical nature. The proceedings were opened by the president of Carnegie Institute of Technology, Thomas C. Baker, who spoke of the importance of the conference and felt that without foreign cooperation it could not have been held. There was no need to apologize for the movement of Carnegie Institute of Technology in the matter. Coal is commanding attention in every part of the world; so is power; and coal will remain the chief source of power for generations to come. The coal chemist is working with the engineer, and nobody can forecast what developments there will be in fuel technology. This conference may be the turning point of fuel technology in America. The development and application of these new processes may be of great benefit to Pittsburgh.

THE Eastern magnetite industry has not failed in its contribution to the war program during the past year. Man-power shortage was the critical problem in maintaining production and for the last half of the year, owing to lack of man power, it was necessary for some mines to change from seven to six days per week schedule. At Cornwall, Pa., the mine operated by the Bethlehem Steel Co. produced approximately 2,000,000 tons of crude ore and 1,200,000 tons of iron ore concentrates, a decrease of about 10 per-cent compared with the previous year. Railroad haulage in the open-pit at this mine was discontinued, being replaced by Mack trucks of approximately 30 tons' capacity. At the Mt. Hope mine in New Jersey, the Warren Foundry and Pipe Corp. produced about 195,000 long tons of crude ore obtaining 70.000 long tons of lump ore and 35,800 long tons of concentrates. An additional 24,500 long tons of concentrates was produced from a stock pile of 47.000 long tons of crude ore accumulated during the latter half of 1943, following the fire in their old dry mill. Drilling in Missouri in 1945 dropped slightly from the preceding year. The only notable development was that in the Ballard area in Bates County, where a number of farmers drilled private gas wells with an average depth of a little more than 30o feet. Table 1 gives a summary of activities by counties. The total footage drilled was 36,186 ft. of which 20,489 ft. was by cable tools and 15,697 ft. by rotary tools.
