Lattice rotations occurring on the tension and compression sides during the bending of molybdenum single crystals at room temperature were followed in detail. Observations were also made concerning crystallite rotations and slip traces. &apos;The results indicated the participation of (110) as slip planes and the<111>as slip directions. Crystallite fragmentation during bending was also noted. EVERAL investigations have been conducted on pure bending of face-centered cubic metals.&apos;-" Structural changes as a result of "bend-gliding," and the importance of bending and constraints during conditions of axial stressing, have been noted.&apos;," It was evident that the mechanism by which the bending deformation occurs is more complex than the case of simple shear. Studies of the bending of body-centered cubic metals from the aspect of the crystallographic mechanism appear to be lacking. Molybdenum single crystals therefore were subjected to deformation by bending in order to determine the reaction of the body-centered cubic lattice to bending stresses. It might be expected for the bending of single crystals that lattice rotation as represented by the axis of compression would proceed toward the pole of the active slip plane and that rotation of the tensile stress axis should indicate the slip direction.&apos; It was believed therefore that a study of the tension and compression sides of bent molybdenum single crystals should give data concerning the operative slip system. Specific problems which are pertinent to the overall picture of plastic deformation were also investigated, e.g., whether the constraints offered by pure bending give rise to the deformation band, and also the nature of the asterism occurring on the tension and compression sides during the stages of deformation. Experimental Procedure Eight single crystal specimens were grown from sintered molybdenum rods 143 in. diameter using the method described previously.6 The purity of this material was reported as 99.9 pct as described elsewhere.&apos; The specimens were % to 1/10 in. in diameter x 7 in. long, with single crystals approximately 1 to 2 in. in length occupying the entire center sections of each specimen. The specimens were elec-trolytically polished using an electrolyte of 300 cc methyl alcohol, 60 cc H2SO4, 130 cc HCl, and a current density of 4 amp per sq in. Each specimen was then loaded in a bending apparatus similar to that used by Yen and Hibbard,&apos; as shown in Fig. 1. The load was applied by means of a spring and screw arrangement through four ball-bearing surfaces set 1.5 in. apart. Either the inner two bearings or the outer two (A, B, Fig. 1) were attached to a movable steel plate (D) through which the load was transmitted. IN OPERATING the Alpha mine of the Consolidated Coppermines Corp., Kimberly, Nev., it was necessary to pump out approximately 1200 gallons of waiter per minute to prevent the mine being flooded. There were three levels in the mine at which water accumulated and from which it was pumped, the 1200, 1400 and the 1800- ft. levels. At each, the pumping equipment was installed in duplicate so that if for any reason one unit was out of commission the other would be available to prevent flooding. The two centrifugal pumps at the 1200-ft. level were 600 hp. each; at the 1400-ft. level, 100 hp. each; and at the 1800-ft. level, 300 hp. each.

The awesome destructive power of known and projected weapons of war presages a new need for geologists and engineers, who may be called upon to locate vital industry underground, thereby protecting it from sky-borne destruction. The Corps of Engineers is now conducting special tests to establish design standards covering the general field of underground installations as well as surveys a of construction methods and the operational hazards connected with such plants. National planning must dictate a policy that is either tactical, where surface manufactured parts; are stored underground and during art emergency assembled, or operational with both the manufacturing and assemblage completed in subsurface plants. Both plans of operation require the use of subterranean plants. Relocation of vital plants underground will probably involve only a small percentage of the production capacity of this nation. The cost of rebuilding in new location will obviously limit its adoption

THE approximate status of education in ore dressing in 1871 is reflected by Rossiter W. Raymond in an article written at that time presenting the curricula and descriptions of the laboratories at the various mining schools in the United States. For the most part, the curricula in which ore dressing was taught were for mining engineering. They comprised courses in geology, mining, and pyrometallurgy about equal in point or credit weights; a short course in ore dressing, and a somewhat longer course in assaying; and courses in surveying, hydraulics, power, and strength of materials-all superimposed on a broad foundation of physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Some curricula contained a fair content of the humanities. Then, as now, the emphasis on fundamentals was greater in the older colleges and universities. The report on the Columbia School of Mines, then relatively young, emphasized that a large percentage of its students were college graduates. As technical and scientific knowledge grew, first metallurgy and then geology were set up as separate curricula. So far as curriculum designation is con-

IF one is to place any credence at all in the reports published in the daily press, the subject of conservation has been a very lively topic of conversation during the past 60 days, and it does not appear that the temperature of the summer months has been in any way moderated by the discussion. It is a subject in which we are all vitally interested and to which, so far as our mineral resources are concerned, both the Institute and the Geological Survey have liberally contributed. The report of the National Conservation Commission, appointed by President Roosevelt, contains a series of papers on the conservation of mineral resources, all of which were prepared by members of the Geological Survey and were compiled largely from information previously collected by that Federal bureau in the performance of its regular duties. It is not the purpose of this paper to reiterate in extenso any of the material already published. The contributions of the Survey officials to the Commission&apos;s report have been published in a separate document as Bulletin No. 394. This docunient is for free distribution and may be obtained upon application to the Director of the Survey. In the preparation of this paper I desire merely to make a few suggestions regarding the possible necessity of some restraint upon or control of one branch of the mining industry with which I have been somewhat closely associated for the past 20 years-that of coal. Most of the members of the Institute are cognizant of the suits brought by the government against the anthracite-operators in Pennsylvania, or the combination of interests commonly known as the ? hard-coal trust." THE only investigations on record of the reactions occurring during the Bessemer blow are of charges containing a large percentage of manganese, with the exception of two partial analyses by Snelus and Barker of the. English method, where a low percentage of manganese was used. They do not give the analysis of the spiegel, nor do they report any graphitic carbon after the first stage of the process. Both report only traces of manganese after the first stage until the addition of spiegel. The slags corresponding to the samples of metal were not analyzed.

BECAUSE of the impetus given to placer mining since the price of gold was advanced to $35, several types of small dredges have made their appearance, especially in the Lincoln and Oroville areas of California. Some of these are known as "doodle bugs," and have been given considerable publicity, though many believe their performance has been overrated and that complete costs of construction and operation, if known would not put them in so favorable a light. Fig. 1 is a doodle bug owned by E. M. Clark and operated near Lincoln, Calif. It is understood that it was abandoned because of inability to handle deep ground. A similar machine that has been operated-profitably by Comstock Placers is shown in Fig. 2.

In a recent publication by Flemings and Nereo, equations for the calculation of the solute distribution in castings were developed, and the solute distributions for unidirectionally solidified A1-4.5 pct Cu ingots cast under various thermal conditions were calculated. The equations derived by Flemings and Nereo for the dendrite "expansion" and "steady-state" zones are essentially equivalent to those previously published by Kirkaldy and Youdelis, 16 for, although the flow velocity cooling rate, and temperature gradients appear in the fundamental differential equations, calculation of the solute distribution requires that the above be explicitly related to the assumed or measured solid-liquid mass distributions during solidification. In the treatment of Kirkaldy and Y-oudelis the mass distributions are simply assumed or measured without any prior and explicit association of the mass distributions to a velocity parameter. The treatment of Flemings and Nereo permits solidification conditions more complicated than the simple unidirectional case to be considered (although in principle the treatment of Kirkaldy and Youdelis could also be extended to include the more general solidification case); however, we note some limitations in the treatment of Flemings and Nereo, and the purpose of this discussion is to point these out and also to indicate those points of similarity in the mass distribution models used which make the two treatments equivalent. Both the Kirkaldy-Youdelis and Flemings-Nereo treatments consider a zone of dendrite "expansion" followed by a "steady-state" zone. However, Flemings and Nereo have failed to consider a zone of "collapse" which begins at the base of the first dendrites to reach the top of the ingot. The omission of this zone of "collapse" results in too high a value for the solute concentration in the latter portion of the ingot to solidify and the conservation of total solute is not possible. In the zone of "collapse" the solute concentration rapidly decreases, which may be accounted for as follows: consider a mushy zone of length X,, shown schematically in Fig. 11 (a), which develops at the chill face and then moves as a steady-state configuration along the length of a solidifying ingot. The solute distribution in this zone, when it first attains the steady state, is shown qualitatively in Fig. 11(b). The segregation is positive (above Co) in the region ab because this region contains primary dendritic solid, ranging from kco to kcE in composition (where k is the partition coefficient and CE is the composition of the eutectic liquid), and liquid metal near eutectic composition. The segregation is negative (below Co) in the region bc because it contains primary dendritic solid only slightly above kco in average composition and liquid metal only slightly above Co in composition. THE GREAT INTEREST in decomposition and trans- formation, so evident in the study of alloys during the last two years, was reflected in the many papers on this subject, presented at the first session of the Institute of Metals, Tuesday morning. Dr. F. A. Thomson, of Montana State School of Mines, presented the first paper by C. Wilson, H. F. Silliman, and E. C. Little, "Rate of Precipitation of Nickel Silicide and Cobalt Silicide in the Hardenable Copper-nickel-silicon and Copper- cobalt-silicon Alloys." Dr. R. F. Mehl, in discussing this paper, stated that the title was somewhat deceptive, as it indicated that the rate of precipitation is determined; the method used is a measurement of electrical conductivity and hardness, neither of which is suitable for a quantitative measurement of rates of reaction or precipitation in the solid state. Hardness is also uncertain because it depends so much upon particle size. Of the various methods proposed for the study of rate of reaction and precipitation the evaluation of volume of reaction produced from the area of photomicrograph is the best.

HE who enters a mining claim within an Indian reservation of the United States of America acquires no rights thereby, because of the fact that the lands within such Indian reservation are not a part of the public domain, and cannot be located or acquired as mineral land. However, where such an entry is authorized as to a particular reservation by an Act of Congress, such claims as may be entered under such authorization are thereby segregated from the reservation, and the Indian title is extinguished. Under the Choctaw Constitution, any citizen of that nation, in other words any Choctaw Indian, who discovered a coal mine, acquired an exclusive right to all coal within a radius of 1 mile. The laws of the Chickasaw nation provided for the formation of corporations to develop coal and other mines, with authority to contract with others to develop and work the mines. Under these laws, leases were made; but Congress subsequently abrogated all existing leases, prohibited all persons from receiving royalties from such mines, and provided that all coal within the nation should remain the common property of the tribes. Such leases are now expressly prohibited by an Act of Congress (32 United States Statutes at Large, 655). All leases of mineral lands upon Indian reservations must now be made under regulations promulgated by the Secretary of the Interior, and the royalties must be paid into the United States Treasury for the benefit of the tribes. In Canada the Indians have no rights to the royal mines and minerals, and the government can make no stipulation with the Indians which would affect the rights of the Province in which the lands are situated. Therefore, while it is true that under our present law no rights can be acquired to a mining claim within an Indian reservation, it seems to be fully within the authority of Congress to make laws, giving such rights to mineral locators as it may deem necessary or expedient.

Measurements have been made of the variation of internal friction with temperature for spectroscopically pure silver, and for o series of solid solutions of silver with cadmium, indium, and tin, using a Ke-type torsion pendulum apparatus. Some experiments have also been made to investigate the effect of nonmetallic impurity on grain boundary relaxation in silver. The effect of the alloying elements is to increase the grain boundary viscosity, and to raise the activation energy for grain boundary relaxation from 22,000 cal per mol for pure silver to 43,000 cal per mol for the solid solutions; the same value being obtained, within the limits of experimental error, for all the alloying elements and solute concentrations investigated. Results of the experiments show exactly the same trend as those obtained previously for a similar series of copper solid solutions. They are in agreement with the general theory of grain boundary relaxation developed by Zener and Ke, but do not seem to be in agreement with either of the mechanisms so far put forward to explain grain boundary slip. EXPERIMENTS described in this paper were made as part of an investigation into the effect of alloying elements in substitutional solid solution on grain boundary viscosity, measured by the internal friction method developed by Ke.&apos; The apparatus and experimental procedure have already been described.&apos; Preliminary work was done with spectro-scopically pure silver. Experimental Work Materials Used—All the materials were supplied in the form of % mm diam wire by Messrs. Johnson Matthey and Co. Ltd. The silver and all the alloying elements used were spectroscopically pure. Composition of the alloys is given in Table I. They were all melted and chill cast under the same conditions as the copper alloys. The ingots were rolled to 1/4 in. sq rod with intermediate annealing at 600°C in an atmosphere of cracked ammonia when necessary. These rods were then drawn to wire by standard procedure with intermediate bright anneals at suitable steps in the drawing operations. Specimens from the annealed wires were sectioned longitudinally. mechanically polished, and examined under the microscope. They were then etched and reexamined. Grain sizes were reasonably uniform for all wires, and no traces of a second constituent were observed. The wires were weighed before and after testing so as to measure any loss of the alloying element due to evaporation. The loss was less than the accuracy of measurement—< 0.1 pct of the total weight— for the Ag-In and Ag-Sn alloys, but appreciable loss of weight occurred in the case of the Ag-Cd alloys. The percentage loss is given in Table 11. X-ray diffraction photographs were taken of all thc wires after test to determine whether there was any marked preferred orientation. Results of the examination are given in Table 111. Experiments on Spectroscopically Pure Silver-— Experiments were made on specimens in which the grain diameter was small relative to that of the wire, and on one specimen in which the grains were grown by the usual strain-anneal method to extend across the full diameter of the wire. These large grained specimens will be referred to as single crystal specimens. The wires were annealed for 11/2 hr at 700°C, and experiments were made at two frequencies of vibration, 1.5 and 0.4 vibrations per sec. The variation of internal friction with temperature is shown in Fig. 1. Experiments on a second small grain specimen gave approximately the same results as for the first wire. It will be seen from Fig. 1 that the peak in the curve for the small grained wire, which is presum-

DISCUSSION Fred C. Bond (Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee)—This is a very complete description of the screened ore fine grinding installation at Lake Shore. The only important data which might be desired are the operating screen analyses and power consumption in each stage. The statement that the energy consumption, or kw-hr per ton, remains constant for all mill diameters is of great interest, but the opinion is widely held that the kw-hr per ton decreases as the mill diameter increases. More definite test work is needed to establish this point. Screened ore fine minding has been successful on hard Lake Shore ore &d on about equally hard South African Rand ore. However, it is still not determined whether it would be successful on ores of average or less than average hardness. It is possible that with softer ores the consumption of ore pebbles might be exceedingly high, or might even exceed the available supply. Also, the softer feed might result in a rapid buildup of harmful intermediate sizes in the mill circuit. These factors can be determined only by a full scale or long pilot mill test. In any case the Lake Shore staff is to be congratulated for this pioneering work. Bunting. S. Crocker (author&apos;s reply)—As requested, the operating screen analyses and Bower consumption for each of the four stages of pebble milling are given, see Table XII. The fist three stages are in series circuit; the last stage is in closed circuit. The primary circuit had rock feed averaging 124 g per piece and the final stages rock feed weighing 63 g. The intermediate stages had mixtures of the two. Regarding Mr. Bond&apos;s statement that "the opinion is widely held that the kw-hr per ton decreases as the mill diameter increases," I would say that I have frequently been told this but have never yet been shown any evidence or seen any evidence published that would prove this statement. It may be true that some of the big mills recently installed have mechanical power savers such as micarta bearings and better lubrication, but as far as the power consumed inside the mill is concerned, we at Lake Shore think that it varies as D2 .", and that is all. We published extensive information on this point in our 1939 paper. Recently Mr. Banks at Consolidated published the figures on his 10 ft 8 in. x 12 ft 0 in. rod mill. As reported in this discussion by the writer: we calculated the power necessary to run this mill based on our 7x6-ft rod mill to within 1 pct of the actual power reported by Mr.
