ILMENITE is the most important raw material for manufacture of titanium dioxide.1 Industrially, several other products are made from ilmenite, the most important of which are: ferrotitanium, ferro carbon-titanium, copper-titanium, titanium carbide and titanium nitride. The production of titanium metal is still in the laboratory stage because of the difficulty of extraction and as yet no important application for the metal has been found. Ilmenite has received considerable attention as an industrial raw material. Imports of ilmenite concentrates for the first nine months of 1941 were 156,737 short tons, the chief source being Travancore, India.2 Domestic production of ilmenite has here-tofore been confined to Amherst and Nelson Counties, Virginia, where a complex rutile, ilmenite, and apatite ore is mined and treated to utilize all three of these minerals. A recent report3 has described development of the large titaniferous magnetite ore body at Tahawas, New York, where it is expected that 800 tons of ilmenite concentrates, containing 48 per cent Ti02 will be produced daily. Additional domestic production is expected from a large ilmenite deposit recently opened in Caldwell County, North Carolina. Flotation tests indicate that a high-grade concentrate containing 53 per cent Ti02 can be made from the North Carolina ore. Prospecting of domestic ores in other areas has been reported.4 It appears that increased domestic production of ilmenite may well save considerable shipping space so vitally needed in these times. The composition and chemical structure of pure ilmenite is given by Dana as: FeO, TiO2; Ti, 31.6 per cent, Fe, 36.8 per cent, 02, 31.6 per cent. This composition is variable in that some iron or titanium may be replaced, giving a variable iron-titanium ratio. As an example, the iron-titanium weight ratio of ilmenite in Caldwell County, North Carolina, has been determined to be 0.94 (using 97.1 per cent ilmenite concentrate obtained by heavy liquids on minus 150-mesh ore) compared with theoretical 1.16. No rutile was noted in this ore to account for the low value. This North Carolina ore is free of magnetite, which is a common associate of ilmenite ores. In view of a large potential production from North Carolina, the Tennessee Valley Authority conducted a study of methods of concentration of that ore, of which the results are reported herein. THE ORE Five samples of ore were taken from the deposit at various exposed locations and were mixed for the study and testing. An attempt was made to proportion the amount of weathered and unweathered portions in making the composite sample, so as to approximate actual operating conditions. An examination of representative specimens of the sample showed the following general facts: I. The black mineral comprising nearly 70 per cent of the ore is ilmenite.

A large production of vanadium during the war helped Germany to meet her critical requirements for the ferroalloy metals. Vanadium was needed not only in the ordinary high-speed too1 steels, but in other as a substitute for chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, which were scarce. Lacking a source of vanadium ore, however, the vanadium was obtained as a by-product of the steel industry—va-nadium-bearing pig iron smelted from iron ores containing about o. I per cellt V was blown in converters to yield vanadium-rich slag, from which vanadium was recovered by chemical treatment. The production capacity obtained was said to be about 6,500,000 lb. of vanadium a Year. Although the general Processes of Preparing vanadium-rich slags as well as the recovery methods described herein are known, some of the details presented may be of interest to both the American steel industry and the vanadium producers. No adequate data on the cost of the vanadium produced in Germany are known, but it seems likely that the cost exceeds the commonly quoted domestic price of about $1.10 per pound of contained VzOa. Information on the German vanadium production was obtained by a team of geologists from the Geological Survey* United States Department of the Interior, during investigations in May and June 1945 of the German utilization of low-grade raw materials. These investigations were sponsored by the Chief of Engineers, War Department. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the aid obtained from Messrs. H. C. Smith and J. D. Dickerson, investigators assigned to the Army Ordnance section of C.I.O.S., and Mr. C. F. Park, Jr., of the Geological Survey team. The data on vanadium recovery from iron ores were obtained from the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut fiir Eisenforschung, the Hermann Goring steel plant at Watenstedt, and from notes made by other investigators at other German steel plants. Preparation of Vanadium-rich Slags Most German iron ores contain only about 0.1 per cent vanadium, or even less, but some of the scandinavian iron ores available to the German iron industry in the past contain a little more than 0.1 per cent. In general German practice of vanadium recovery, nearly all of the vanadium in the ore goes into the pig iron, which is blown in the Thomas converter, yielding a slag containing about I per cent V. This slag is remelted, the vanadium again going with the iron, which is again blown in a converter, yielding a slag that averages about 10 per cent V. This slag is treated at special chemical plants, by the process of a sodadizing roast, water leach, and acid precipitation of vanadium oxide. Crushing and grinding ore consumes so much energy that it represents a major component of total processing costs. While it has been estimated that only about 0.6% of the total energy expended in grinding is actually used to create new surfaces, accurate measurement of this quantity is difficult. If energy expended in crushing and grinding could be more directly measured, alternatives for increasing efficiency of the processes could be evaluated more effectively. Since the energy intensity associated with rock fracture is related to fracture sonority, it should be possible to use this sound (acoustic emission) to measure the actual energy expended. However, it is difficult to apply this approach because the mill environment is so noisy. To make the approach practical, a method for differentiating acoustic emissions caused by rock fracture from those caused by extraneous noises must be found. Pattern recognition analysis may provide such a method. This paper presents the results of pattern recognition analysis to make two types of differentiations: acoustic emissions caused by crushing two types of minerals (quartz and chrysocolla) and those caused by two extraneous noise sources, and acoustic emissions produced by each mineral.

The aging characteristics of a titanium alloy containing 13 pct V, I1 pct Cr, and 4 pct A1 have been investigated by hardness measurements, X-ray diffraction, and metallography. The P phase decomposes into 0 + a, and 0 + a, + TiCr, above about 1050°F; below this temperature a transition phase, believed to be w, precipitates first, followed by a, and TiCr,. The observed hardening is attributed to these reactions. Cold working of solution-treated specimens accelerates hardening and raises the hardness level attained. A TTT diagram is proposed. NEW titanium-base alloys, designated as "all-beta," have recently been developed. These alloys contain large amounts of P-stabilizing elements such as molybdenum, chromium, or vanadium. When cooled from the solution temperature, they consist only of P; in particular, the martensitic a,' phase does not form.

PETROLEUM'S importance in World War II can perhaps be better realized by the recitation of a few facts and figures: Gasoline needs in this war are already eighty times greater than in the last war. It takes nearly three pounds of gasoline to deliver one pound of bombs, filled with petroleum explosives, on an enemy objective. Every American soldier overseas requires an average of more than fifty gallons of petroleum products per week, with the oil used by Navy and supply ships and America's Allies boosting the consumption of oil per soldier to an even higher figure. Every oil well in the United States now must produce each day an average of four barrels of oil for war and combat jobs. More than fifty million gallons of gasoline, fuel oils, lubricants, and other petroleum products are now going directly to the fighting forces every day.

ONCE a millionaire's plaything, the Santo Domingo mine, in Peru, is now, because of its metallurgical problem, an engineer's nightmare. It is deep in the montaña jungles of the Amazon basin, 140 mi. northeast of Tirapata, which is a rail- way station between Puno and Cuzco, and about 250 mi. east of Mollendo on the Pacific. The discovery was 111ade by Marian(-) Quispe, an Indian, who, while searching for quinine bark, was attracted by a slab of gold quartz 1x1 the rock wall of a narrow canyon. He broke off a piece, weighing 47 Spanish ounces and, that time, worth approximately $900. This he took to Francisco Velasco and Manuel Estrada, merchants of Coaza, who persuaded Quispe to lead them to the place, five days' journey on foot through a tangled wilderness. Inclusions of MnS and Fe3C have been introduced into single crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe to study their effects on recrystallization behavior and textures after cold rolling and annealing. The presence of MnS in (110) [001] and (111)[112] crystals inhibited primary grain growth and promoted secondary recrystallization but did not alter the texture significantly after annealing at 1200°C. The presence of Fe3C in (llO)[OOl] and (100)[001] crystals caused a refinement of the primary re crystallized grain size but did not promote secondary recrystallization. THE texture behavior of single crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe during deformation and recrystallization has been studied by numerous investigators. The early work of Dunn&apos; followed by Decker and Harker2 involved relatively small cold reductions. More detailed studies of Dunn3&apos;4 and of Dunn and Koh5&apos;6 involved a reduction of 70 pct and recrystallization at 980°C for several crystals. Walter and Hibbard7 studied a greater variety of initial orientations and sought to relate the textures to those of polycrystalline material. Attention was focused on the nucleation process during early stages of annealing and on surface energy effects in studies by Walter and Dunn8 and by HU.9&apos;10 One of the most extensive investigations has been reported by T. Taoka, E. Furubayashi, and S. Takeuchi.11 Most of this work has been conducted using relatively pure crystals with minimal amounts of precipi-tate-forming elements such as carbon, oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen. Recently, however, S. Taguchi and A. Sakakura have observed that AIN precipitates can alter the recrystallization textures of rolled (100)[001] crystals.12 The present studies were initiated to determine effects of MnS and Fe3C precipitates on recrystalli-zation and grain growth behavior of rolled single-crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe. Both of these types of inclusions play significant roles in the recrystallization behavior leading to the formation of the (110)[001] or cube-on-edge texture in commercial grain-oriented silicon iron. It is well known that (110)[001] primary grains are formed by recrystallization of (110)[001] or (11 l)[ 112] crystals after cold reduction of about 60 pct or more. Crystals of these orientations, therefore, were selected for study of the effect of MnS in-clusions on grain growth. On the other hand, a major component of the texture of cold-rolled, polycrystal-line 3 pct Si-Fe is the (100)[011] orientation. The function of Fe3,C inclusions is of interest for this orientation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The single crystals used are listed in Table I and were obtained from commercial Si-Fe alloy processed to produce (110)[001] and (100)[001] texture by secondary growth. The cube-on-edge material was 0.59 mm thick. Suitably large (110)[001] crystals 25 mm wide were selected and their orientations were determined using an optical goniometer. Etch pits for texture determination were formed by a ferric sulfate solution. The other crystals used in the study with (100)[001], (100)[011], and (111)[112] orientations were obtained from sheet which contained large grains developed from secondary recrystallization by a surface-energy driving force.13 Most crystals had a (100) plane very nearly parallel to the sheet surface and the rolling direction could be selected readily. The same sheet also contained a few crystals with (111) planes parallel to the sheet surface, these also being a result of growth by surface energy. The crystals selected from the sheet were about 25 mm wide and 0.25 to 0.28 mm thick. As shown in Table 11, the crystals already contained about 0.070 to 0.10 pct Mn. Continuous mining machinery provides the coal industry with one way to compete for a larger share of the total energy market. Various types of machines are discussed and some of the problems with continuous miners, encountered by operators, are reviewed. Equipment manufacturers are working with mine personnel to provide solutions for problems that arise. While coal production over the past 25 or 30 years has been on a horizontal plane, coal&apos;s share of the total energy market has declined. To participate more effectively in this total energy market, it is necessary to produce coal more efficiently. It is the obligation of all management, employes, and mining departments to gear the deep mining industry to the rapid progress and changing of today&apos;s modern industry. This can be accomplished in the near future with the selection of the proper type of continuous miner best suited to each operator&apos;s individual situation. In most mining operations there is tremendous incentive to undertake the continuous mining program. It can reduce the size of the mine greatly by permitting a minimum of working places; it makes pillar recovery work more efficient from the standpoint of overall cost, amount of coal recovered, and safety. The work force can be reduced materially permitting closer and more efficient supervision. It simplifies maintenance because equipment can be more readily standardized. The trend of the coal market favors the use of continuous mining machines. Although there appears to be a general feeling that continuous mining is still a relatively new program and will be slow in replacing conventional mechanical equipment, the fact is that tremendous strides have been made since the first machines were installed in 1948. This program is advancing at approximately the same rate that mobile loading machines replaced hand loading. From 1948 to 1955 there were approximately 450 continuous mining machines in service. In October 1959, a survey revealed that there were more than 700 continuous mining machines in service. Many operators have expressed a desire to undertake this program, but they feel that they could not do so at this time because of one or more of the following reasons: 1) the thickness of their coal seams, 2) seam characteristics, 3) soft bottoms, 4) bad roof conditions, 5) size consist, 6) insufficient flexibility in machines, 7) difficult ventilation problems, and 8) high maintenance costs. With the realization on coal about the same today as it was in 1948, or slightly less and since coal is still failing to participate to a greater degree in the total energy market, it is not surprising that the coal industry is desperately exploring more economical methods for deep mining. The manufacturers are aware that the coal industry is willing to invest in continuous miners if the equipment is built for maximum flexibility, will produce higher tons per man, and assure long life between overhaul programs. CONTINUOUS MINING MACHINES Before discussing details regarding the selection of a continuous miner, let us have a preview of some of the continuous mining machines which are available to the coal industry today. Jeffrey Manufacturing Co.: The machine shown is the Jeffrey 76 A.M. Colmol. This is their most widely used miner, and has been particularly successful in central Pennsylvania and in high-wall mining in western Kentucky. One of the outstanding features of this auger-type miner is its portability. The entire mining range can be changed from its lowest point to the maximum height without stopping the mining operation. Jeffrey 76 B.M. Colmol: This machine is similar to the 76 A.M. model; however, it is built bigger and stronger for a mining range of 50 1/2 to 72 in. This is the model that is now available (Fig. 2). Jeffrey has added two arms to the top row, omitted the odd arm in the bottom row, thus permitting a 50 pct larger throat opening. This eliminates one

BARITE (BaSO4) is the most important industrial barium mineral from the standpoint of quantity consumed. In 1938 the amount was 365,000 tons. Its uses are numerous, some of the more important being in the production of pigments, as an inert filler in a wide variety of products, as a weighting material in oil-well drilling muds, in the manufacture of some kinds of glass, and in the production of barium chemicals. The barite studied in this investigation occurs as the massive variety in a shale replacement formation near Magnet Cove, Ark. It is intimately mixed with quartz and small amounts of iron oxide and residual shale. Complete liberation of barite and quartz is not obtained when the rock is ground to 100 per cent through 325mesh. The crude rock with which all test work was done assayed 85.1 per cent BaSO4, 11.11 per cent Si02, and 2.85 per cent R2O3. Its specific gravity was 4.03. It was found in the course of the investigation that the barite contained a small amount of uniformly distributed carbonaceous material, so intimately dispersed that it could not be seen with the microscope, but gave a definite gray cast to the barite concentrates. The color of the barite in polished sections of the crude rock ranged from gray to almost black, while finely ground powder was a reddish gray. The reddish hue was due to the iron oxide present. In 1939, under the supervision of Oliver C. Ralston,* the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Milwhite Company, of Houston, Texas, undertook to study the flotation of barite from Magnet Cove, Ark. Flotation of several southern barite ores had already been investigated by the Bureau of Mines.1 The Magnet Cove barite was unique, however, in that it had to be ground to such an extremely small particle size for liberation. The flotation of nonmetallic minerals in the presence of a large amount of slime is usually very difficult, and when done is an innovation calling for conditions different from those under which granular material is separated. LABORATORY FLOTATION WORK Preliminary investigation showed that the flotation reagents recommended by O&apos;Meara and Coe1 for separating barite and siliceous material were suitable, but much larger quantities of reagents were required to separate such finely divided material. Moreover, it was found that careful control of the frothing was necessary. When oleic acid and sodium silicate were used a voluminous froth was observed at the beginning of a test, and toward the end there was not enough froth to effect complete recovery of barite. The addition of pine oil as a frother gave proper frothing for the duration of the test, and the substitution of coconut fatty acid (crude lauric acid) for oleic acid produced a more heavily burdened froth. THE interesting and carefully developed formula which Professor Bucky presents for answering the question of whether proposed new equipment will give a net return on investment equal to or greater than that on present equipment starts with an assumption that the management may make this relative return a determining factor in its decision whether or not the new equipment should be provided. I do not question that in some cases the management may take this position, but I would point out the error involved in so doing. The proper test is not a comparison of the return on new as compared with the return on old investment, but is rather a comparison of the return on a particular new investment as compared with the return which would be obtainable from some other new investment which now might be made. Then I would point out that I believe Professor Bucky is in error in using as a factor in his computations the item of unamortized cost of old investment. The financial advantage to be derived from a new investment does not depend on the extent to which we may in the past have written off the cost of old equipment, nor does it even depend upon what was the original cost of that old equipment. Even the salvage or resale value of the old equipment will only enter into the picture to the extent that the present salvage or resale value differs from the ultimate salvage or resale value otherwise to be obtained, after due allowance for the interest factor.

The expansion of the more common types of glass under consideration varies from 2.7 to 10.4 X 10-6 per degree Centigrade, over the range 20" to 400&apos; C. For reference, the t,hermal expansion curves of several types of glass used for sealing by the lamp and tube industries are given (Figs. 1 and 2). This paper covers a detailed investigation of the thermal expansion of a series of nickel-iron alloys in which the nickel content varies from 30 to 70 per cent. Particular stress is laid on the alloys that contain between 40 and 55 per cent Ni.

(Pittsburg Meeting. March, 1010.) GENERALLY speaking, the practical study of combustion has been made mainly from the stand-point of the steam engineer. This. narrow view-point has left open a large field for scientific research on the application of combustion in other arts, where the conditions of heat-utilization are widely different from those presented in the steam-generator. The great economic importance of the boiler and the ease of measuring its performance, together with the comparative uniformity of conditions in the steam-generator, is, probably, quite largely responsible for the practical neglect of the study of the use of fuels in other arts save only on the basis of their thermal value. Yet these other arts show quite plainly that a thermal-value basis alone is Dot sufficient. For example, in burning lime, under ordinary conditions of firing, a cord of wood will do as much work as a ton of coal, though the latter affords more than twice the number of heat-units. Similar results are evidenced in burning brick, in the roasting of certain ores, in reheating billets, and in many other arts where heat is to be applied over extended areas to fragmental masses of more or less refractory materials. In these arts much is to be gained by a careful study of the application of the heating-agent in the form of the long flame, and in the production of the heat in contact with, or in direct proximity to, the object to be heated. The first Rodpeb mill ever built and placed in full scale successful operation went onstream in mid- 1960 at Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co.&apos;s newly modernized portland cement production plant at Nashville, Tenn. It replaced a third stage of fine crushing and two 7x22-ft Compeb mills in the wet raw slurry grinding department. The Rodpeb mill at Nashville is similar in appearance to a Compeb mill but is larger. The mill, which operates in open circuit, is 9 ft in diameter and 38 ft long. The rod compartment is 12 ft long, with the rods being 11.5 ft in length and ranging in diameter from 4 in. down to about 1 in. The weight of the rod charge is 100,000 lb. The liners of the rod compartment are of the Lorain design.

The Iron Ore Co. of Canada (IOC) has developed a computerized plan analysis method for its open-pit iron mining operations which will eliminate much of the tedious manual drafting of pit design plans performed by engineers and geologists at its two major operational areas near Schefferville, Que., and Labrador City, Nfld. The new technique permits analysis of section or bench plans for a specific ore body, based on drillhole information; preparation of a three-dimensional unit profit matrix for pit design purposes, and storage of extensive ore-block information for other applications. Other advantages include enhanced design accuracy through reduction of human errors normally associated with preparation of large data masses, and by elimination of errors inherent in planimeter-prepared ore block diagrams.

INTRODUCTION. This paper is a discussion of a part of the mineral wealth of the States of Oaxaca and Puebla, Mexico. It does not refer to the precious metals, some miles of which, in these States, are said to have been worked before the advent of the Spanish conquistadores in the sixteenth century, as my purpose is to invite attention to the exploration of deposits of coal and iron-ores in the Mixteca region. The prominence given to coal is warranted by the great effect of the scarcity of fuel upon the industrial development of Mexico. Under the progressive administration of President Porfirio Diaz, the Republic has made wonderful advances in the past three decades; and this progress would have been greater but for the limitations imposed by expensive fuel. In the spring of 1906 I was detailed by the Birkinbine Engineering Offices, of Philadelphia, to accompany A. B. Adams, of New York, in a reconnoissance of reported deposits of iron-ores in the State of Oaxaca. The result of this expedition was the formation, in 1907, of the Oaxaca Iron & Coal Co., of which Mr. Adams became, and has remained, President and General Manager, and I have spent the past three years as Chief Engineer of this company in Mexico, principally in western Oaxaca, where field-headquarters were established. GEOGRAPHY AND POPULATION.
