SOFT solders are used principally in the automotive, can-making, building construction and electrical industries, but their field of usefulness extends well beyond these principal users to a vast list of miscellaneous applications where metal joints are required. The most common soft solders and the only ones considered in this discussion are those com-posed of lead and tin, with or without various relatively small percentages of impurities or additions. A small amount of antimony is often pur-posely added. As an indication of the importance of these lead-tin solders, 8620 long tons were consumed in 1934 in the U.S., and during most of 1935 from 900 to 1000 long tons were used each month. A great many factors influence the properties of joints made with soft solders. Fluxes and the fluxing procedure used to prepare the surfaces to be joined in order to give a true metal-to-metal contact are among the most important of these factors. The temperatures used, cleanliness of the work and general soldering technique have their effect, but when results are unsatisfactory they are usually attributed to the metallic solder itself and the raw materials from which it is made. Some-times criticism of the solder is justified. The wrong composition may be chosen for a given job, impurities may be present that ruin certain desired qualities, or uniformity may be lacking. A solder may even be looked upon with suspicion because of its ancestry, regardless of its true composition and behavior. To clarify the effect of slight differences in composition as found in commercially refined solders, a comparison of properties of solders grouped according to their origin has been undertaken. EFFective sand permeabilities can be ascertained from core analysis if the laboratory data are compensated to allow for the presence of connate or residual water. Such adjustments can be made by applying empirically derived correction factors. Effective sand permeabilities can be estimated also from analytical studies of field depth-pressure measurements. In one method the time rate of pressure build-up after a well is shut in from steady-state flow is required, and in the other the direct measurement of a steady-state rate of flow and the corresponding equilibrium pressure. The results of the investigation discussed in this paper demonstrate that these methods for determining mean effective sand permeabilities can be correlated. Introduction In recent years many investigators have demonstrated the practical value of an accurate knowledge of the physical and dynamical characteristics of reservoir sands containing oil and gas. Of these factors, which serve to completely define a porous medium as a container or carrier of fluids, the dynamical characteristics are of particular interest to the production engineer because they afford a direct measure of the rate at which the oil or gas content of a reservoir will become available. The constant that defines dynamically the porous medium as the carrier of a homogeneous fluid in viscous motion is the "permeability." Coke-analysis Method The generally accepted practice in com-piling permeability data has been to analyze in the laboratory core samples taken in the course of drilling through the productive horizon, and to obtain the mean measure of the productive ability or permeability for the interval open to production by graphical integration of the permeability profile. An average permeability ascertained in this manner, however, is useful to the production engineer only for comparisons of wells drilled in the same horizon, as permeabilities determined in the laboratory are measures of only the ability of a porous medium to transmit a single fluid. As a result of many investigations, it has been shown, however, that under actual reservoir conditions water is coexistent with the petroleum and that its presence greatly reduces the permeability of the sand to oil. Empirical relationships showing the effect of the presence of any immiscible fluid A (such as water) in a porous medium on the permeability of the medium to a fluid B (such as oil) have been established separately by Hassler,1 Dunlap,2 and the writer (Fig. I),3 so that the average specific or dry-core permeability as determined in the laboratory can be corrected to give the true measure of the ability of the horizon penetrated to transmit oil, provided the percentage of pore space occupied by connate water is known accurately.

The mountains of Utah contain one of the largest deposits of high grade bituminous coal in the world. According to the United States Geological Survey, there are 13,130 square miles of land known to contain workable coal, and these extensive fields contain 196,000,000,000 tons of coal. More remarkable than the extent of the coal fields is the thickness of the coal beds. Over three-fourths of the output of coal in Utah is recovered from beds ranging from 8 to 17 feet in thickness, as com- pared to one-eighth of the output of the entire country from such beds. In 1917, Utah mined one-third of its coal from seams at least 16 feet thick, compared to one-half of one per cent of the total bituminous output of the country from like seams. Coal at Wales, in Sanpete county, and in the vicinity of Coalville, Utah, was, it is reported, the first discovered by white men in the state. Wales claims the distinction of having produced the first coal mined in Utah. Two men, who had been coal miners in Wales, learned of the coal from an old Indian chief who called it "rock that would burn." In 1857, the town of Wales was founded and coal mined, and in 1858 some coke was manufactured and hauled by ox team to Salt Lake City. South of Wales is Castle Valley, in Wasatch Plateau field. From 50 to 60 miles of the old Spanish Trail from Santa Fe. New Mexico, to Monterey, California, lies in Castle Valley. The coal in this field may or may not have been known at the time the trail was used extensively. The first published reference to this coal, however, was made by a party of the Corps of Topographic Engineers in their journal for October 11, 1853.

The effects of several different prior treatments an the creep behavior of 99.9995 pct aluminum at 260°C and 1000 psi canstant stress are compared with annealed specimens. Quenching from 538oC, irradiation with 2 mev electrons, and tension-compression room temperature fatigue damage were used to change the substructure of the specimens prior to their creep testing. The quenched and the irradiated specimens showed a larger primary and transient stage contribution to the creep curve than those specimens which were only annealed prim to creep testing. The specimen receiving prior fatigue damage at room temperature showed no first stage or transient creep when tested under identical conditions as the above specimens and had an average creep rate seven orders of magnitude lower than that of either the annealed, the quenched or the irradiated creep specimens. In a previous electron transmission microscopy investigationl of the substructure developed during the creep of pure aluminum at 0.57 Tm, it was noted that a large concentration of vacancy loops and dislocation loops were present in and near the subboundaries while the interior of the subgrains contained few of these defects and had a low dislocation density, see Fig. 1. Yim and Grant2 and Hazlett3 have shown that the presence in nickel of a substructure developed by prior cold work effectively reduces the primary and transient contributions to the creep curve. Hultgren,4 McLean,5 Gervais, Norton, and Grant,6 Chang and Grant,7 and others have shown the same effect with the higher stacking fault energy material, aluminum. However, the specific defect responsible for the change in the creep behavior developed by the prior cold work was not established. Specifically, what effectively interfered with dislocation motion in these materials at elevated temperatures? Was it jogs on dislocations produced by their interaction with other dislocations or with vacancy or dipole loops, see Fig. 1, or did the subgrain walls determine the mean free path for glissile dislocations? This would be a realistic possibility only if subgrain boundaries are effective barriers to dislocation motion. The ability of a subgrain boundary to act effectively against glissile dislocations depends on the number and the arrangement of dislocations in the subboundary,8 which in turn is a function of the creep strain.' This paper compares the creep rate of specimens possessing a large vacancy concentration to that of annealed specimens and with specimens having a stable subboundary wall containing Lomer locks produced by prior fatigue damage. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Vacancy Loops. Aluminum creep specimens, 99.9995 pct pure, were machined from zone refined rod to a 2-in. gage length and a cross-sectional area of 0.025 in. These specimens were annealed at 538oC, 1000°F, for 10 min and quenched into ice water. They were then reheated to the creep test temperature of 260°C, 500°F, and held at this temperature for 18 min to al-low for vacancy condensation and loop formation. The specimens were subsequently creep tested at 1000 psi constant stress at 260°C. The temperature along the gage length was monitored by three Pt-Pt, 13 pct Rh thermocouples, two embedded in the upper and lower shoulders of the specimen and one attached to the mid-point of the gage length- The temperature gradient was held to ± l°C or less throughout the Creep test. a. Boundaries of the District.—The district here considered comprises that portion of Colorado commonly known as " the San Juan Country." In order to bring the principal geological features of this region within the scope of a map of convenient dimensions upon a suitable scale, I have found it desirable to mark off boundaries near the parallels of 37O and 38O 10', and the meridiaus of 106' 30' and 108' 30' (West Longitude from Greenwich). This area of (approximately) 9400 square miles includes all the formations which we should have to discuss if our territory were greatly enlarged, excepting such as are distinctly characteristic of adjoining areas with independent orographic genesis. By limiting this review to these confines we miss very little of the geology of the eight counties of the San Juan region, viz.: Dolores, San Miguel, Ouray, Hinsdale,

An apparatus for the determination of fluid-fluid interfacial tension by the pendant drop method has been constructed. The apparatus is refined beyond those previously described in that the samples are introduced into an evacuated windowed cell without contacting air or mercury. Interfacial tension data are reported for the water-methane system between 74 and 280°F and 15 and 15,000 psi. The variation of wettability of the stainless-steel dropper tip with pressure and temperature was observed incidentally to the measurements. INTRODUCTION The most refined previous apparatus --for the determination of fluid-fluid interfacial tension at reservoir conditions was built by Hauser and Michaels.' These authors used the pendant drop method, previously investigated by Andreas, Hauser, and Tucker.' Recently, Fordham3 has made the pendant drop method an absolute one by numerical integration of the differential equation of drop shape. It is necessary to know the difference in density of the two fluids and the acceleration due to gravity in order to evaluate the interfacial tension from measurements of drop dimensions. Contact angle is not involved in the measurements by this method. Some precise tests of the method have been made at atmospheric pressure and 77°F by Douglas," who found agreement with established values to within about 0.1 per cent for water and air, cyclohexane and air, benzene and air, and benzene and water. No values of interfacial tension from the recent pendant drop apparatusJ have been published by Hauser and Michaels. However, values for the water-benzene and water-decane systems are given in Michaels' thesis5 or Dressures from 15 .to 10,000 psi and temperatures from 73 to 268ºF. Some determinations on gas-oil and gas-water systems in the range of 15 to 4,000 psi and 78 to 178°F have been made by Hozott,' by the drop-volume method. The capillary rise method has been used to investigate the interfacial tension in gas-oil systems at 88°F to several thousand psi by Swartz.7 Other determinations in gas-oil systems at pressures under 1,000 psia have been made by Jones: and Beecher and Parkhurst.9 The scarcity of data for pressures above 5.000 psi is apparent. APPARATUS An assembly drawing of the working section of the interfacial tenqion apparatus is given in Fig. 2. 'The endanant drop (A) is housed in a pressure chamber having glass windows (B). An agitator (6) is provided. The metal parts of the apparatus coming into contact with the sample are made of AISI: Type 316 steel. Drain grooves are provided around the whdows so that the sample in contact with the O-rings is not returned to the working section when the pressure is reduced. A schematic arrangement of the apparatus is given in Fig. 3. The working section containing the pendant drop (A) is filled by samples from bombs (B) with the aid of the vacuum system (C). The O-ring sealed pistons (D) used to separate the sample from the hydraulic fluid are shown together with the pressure production and measurement system (E). A front view of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Most of the hydraulic system is at the top of the panel. The pump and displacement piston are at the lower right. The Variacs for the air bath heaters. the camera. and the vacuum gauge are a1so visible on the panel. The working section together with a window closure and a drop-forming tip closure are shown in Fig. 9. The carbon arc light source with filter is visible in the upper part of the picture. Two sides of the air bath with the impeller and a part of the convection shield can also be seen. The assembled air bath is shown in Fig. 10.

Many constitution diagrams do not indicate the limits oJ solid solubility of the silver-rich solid solutions below 200°C. Thermoelectric measurements were employed to determine this limit in the nieighborhood of room temperature. The appearance of a second phase causes a discontinuity to occur in the tkevtrroelectric power as a function of cornposition at constant temperature and pressure. This discontinuity was employed to determine the limits of the silver-rich terzinal solid solutions of the Ag-A l, Ag-As, Ag- Bi, Ag--Ge, Ag-In, Ag-Pb, Ag-Sb, and Ag-Sn systenls at 30°C. CONSIDERABLE work has been done on the constitution of binary alloys of silver. The available data have been compiled by Hansen1 and Elliott.2 However, many of the binary diagrams do not show the limits of solid solubility of the silver-rich solutions below about 200° C. This work was undertaken in an attempt to extend these limits to the neighborhood of room temperature . PREPARATION OF ALLOYS All of the alloys were made with silver containing less than 0.014 pct (by weight) of impurities. The materials were weighed out into 225-g heats and melted in a high-frequency induction furnace. The indium, tin, and antimony alloys were melted in A1203 crucibles, under a boric anhydride cover, and were poured into split graphite finger molds. The aluminum, germanium, arsenic, lead, and bismuth alloys were melted in machined graphite crucibles; they were also covered with boric anhydride and poured into split graphite finger molds. The $-in.-diam ingots were heated to 750°C and were forged and hot-rolled down to 0.1 by 0.1 in. The wires were pickled in a 25 pct HNO3-75 pct H2O solution to remove any oxygen-rich surfaces. The wires were then annealed at 550°C for 2 hr in a dissociated ammonia atmosphere. They were then furnace-cooled for 20 hr to room temperature in this atmosphere. The wires were cold-drawn to 0.0808 in. diam. The finished wires were again annealed at 550°C in the same manner as in the first anneal. Thermoelectric Power. The thermoelectric power of a single specimen of each alloy was determined against pure silver which contained a maximum impurity content of 0.014 pct by weight. The wire specimens were straightened and then cleaned with ethyl alcohol. They were then reannealed in the same way as the finished wires to assure that any residual stress would be at a minimum level. Previous work has shown that the presence of small amounts of stress has the effect of decreasing the thermoelectric power. The alloy specimen was soldered to the pure silver wire to form the measuring junction. A standard set of copper leads was then soldered to the reference junctions of the thermocouple. These junctions were maintained in separate dewar flasks which contained finely shaved melting ice during the test. The thermal electromotive forces of the thermocouples were measured at four temperatures between 15° and 45°C. A known source of electromotive force was balanced against the output of the thermocouple until a null balance was reached. The data were then expressed in terms of the thermoelectric power at 30°C. The results were then converted to absolute thermoelectric power, s303.3 These data have an average error of less than ±0.2 pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION All of the experimental data are given in Table 11. Since the electromotive forces of the binary alloys of silver were determined against the pure silver from which they were made, the resultant thermoelectric powers are only a function of the intentionally added binary elements at the constant test temperatures. This provides a direct measure of the effects of the alloying elements. The absolute thermoelectric power of an alloy of silver is given4 by:

A series of organic collectors has been developed which successfully float synthetic secondary uranium minerals, such as autunite, carnotite, and torbernite. Recoveries up to 97 pct have been obtained. With cleaning of rougher concentrates, ratios of concentration as high as 15:1 are possible on head assays of 0.10 to 0.50 pct U 3 O 8. Additions of certain base metal salts aid in recovery and materially increase the rate of flotation and selectivity of the collectors for the synthetic minerals. Flotation tests on natural uranium minerals have not yet equaled results obtained on the synthetics, although these collectors do give better results than conventional collectors for nonsulfide minerals. RAPID increase in mining and milling uranium ores during the past seven years and the discovery of large tonnages of uranium-bearing material too low in grade to stand the cost of leaching have developed considerable interest in possible methods for beneficiating these marginal ores. Such ores are generally classed as those containing less than 0.10 pct U3O8. Development of a beneficiation method that would give both high recovery and high ratio of concentration would also make possible the beneficiation of higher grade ores and would provide higher grades of feed to existing leaching plants. Although considerable research and testing on physical or physico-chemical beneficiation of domestic uranium ores has been done in the past, to the best knowledge of the authors only a single application of physical beneficiation is now in operation on a commercial scale. Flotation has been attempted on the basis of mineral association rather than by direct concentration of the contained uranium minerals. Flotation studies conducted on this project on certain ores gave recoveries of 60 to 70 pct of the uranium by the use of conventional flotation agents such as oleic acid, but ratios of concentration were in the order of 1.5:1 to 2.5:1. Subsequent cleaning to upgrade the concentrates rapidly increased losses in the cleaner tailings, which were not later refloated in the rougher flotation. Selection of Collector: In selecting desirable organic collectors for these oxide systems, a thorough study was made of the relationship between structural characteristics and collector activity by an examination of the behavior of a number of different functional arrangements present in a variety of organic molecules, (see Fig. 1). It is generally accepted that a collector must have a relatively long-chain hydrocarbon radical and a chemically reactive elec-trophilic center. Such a requirement could be met by a large number of compounds, but steric effects at the uranium mineral surface, solubility, compat-ability with aqueous systems, air avidity, bond strength at the mineral surface, interfacial concentration of the collector, and diffusion rate of the formed complex from the air-water interface eliminated many as unsuitable for this purpose. Preliminary investigations were completed of possible collector designs consisting of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon radicals attached to stable combinations of nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and halogen electrophilic centers, Fig. 1.Tests were made to determine melting point spans, solubility of mineral-collector combinations in various solvents, reactions with soluble uranium salts, contact angles, and floatability by semi-quantitative beaker methods.' Contact angle determinations were not too useful because of the fine particle sizes of available mineral samples. From the foregoing study it appeared that nitrogen-sulfur electrophilic centers coupled with straight-chain saturated alkyl hydrocarbon radicals would hold the most promise for floating secondary uranium minerals. As the dithiocarbamate compounds can be made to combine these attributes they were selected for further study. A process has been developed which produces spodumene concentrates assaying 6.0 pct Li2O and 0.45 pct Fe2O3, with 70 to 75 pct recovery of spodumene. Two flotation separations are required: the simultaneous removal of mica, feldspar, and quartz as a froth product using a cationic collector, and the subsequent removal of iron-bearing minerals as a froth product while spodumene is depressed as a tailing. SINCE the close of World War II there have been numerous developments resulting in the increased use of lithium by industry. Notable among these has been the development of an industrial lubricant, based on lithium stearate, which is fluid at low temperatures, stable at high temperature, and insoluble in water. A new bleaching agent, lithium hypo-chlorite, has also been developed recently.' Other well-known uses are listed below: 1—Lithium oxide in ceramics reduces firing time, lowers melting temperatures, lowers thermal expansion, raises refractive index, and improves chemical resistivity. 2—Lithium carbonate and lithium strontium nitrate are used in pyrotechnics for their brilliant red color.' 3—Lithium chlorides and fluorides are used as fluxes for welding aluminum and magnesium.' 4—The affinity of lithium for nitrogen is the basis for a process used in purifying helium." 5— Lithium chlorides and bromides are used in air conditioning for their powers to absorb organic amines, ammonia, and smoke.6-—Lithium hydride has been used as a source of hydrogen to inflate life rafts and balloons used by the Air Forces and Navy.' 7— Lithium metal and lithium hydride are useful in the atomic energy program in connection with the production of the isotopes of hydrogen." During the 1942-45 period of World War 11, Solvay Process Co. operated a flotation plant with a daily capacity of 300 tons of ore for the production of spodumene concentrate near Kings Mountain, North Carolina. The operation was shut down upon reduction of wartime demand for lithium chemicals, and until recently there has been no production from the Carolinas. In April 1950 an investigation of the problem of spodumene flotation from North Carolina ores was begun at North Carolina State College Minerals Research Laboratory at Asheville, N. C. This laboratory, operating under the combined auspices of North Carolina State College, North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, undertook the spodumene project at the request of Foote Mineral Co. of Philadelphia. The work, involving a period of 15 months of intensive batch and pilot plant investigation, was completed in June 1951 and resulted in development of a process for concentration of spodumene by flotation which has been hereto unrecorded in the literature. A similar approach has been used before on iron, ilmenite, and other minerals, but the literature shows no record of its having been applied to spodumene. Parts of the process are now being used on a commercial scale at the Foote Mineral Co. plant near Kings Mountain, N. C., which has been in production since July 1951. It is the purpose of this paper to describe some of the results of the investigation. The Orebodies Spodumene-bearing pegmatites occur in a narrow belt 24.5 miles long and 1.8 miles wide extending southwestward from Lincolnton to Grover, N. C. According to statements judged to be conservative, the tin-spodumene belt of the Carolinas contains an estimated 4,300,000 tons of pegmatite ore averaging 15 pct spodumene. This amounts to "a reserve of at least 650,000 tons of spodumene (more than 20,000 tons of metallic lithium) to a depth of 100 ft."' This figure includes only bodies having an average thickness of 35 ft and length of 550 ft. There are hundreds of pegmatites in the belt, many of which are less than 10 ft wide. The largest pegmatite in the area has a maximum thickness of 395 ft and maximum length of 3250 ft.' These larger pegmatites are composed principally

It has seemed to the writer that one important, and indeed sufficient reason, for our slow progress in learning the relation between the chemical composition and the physical properties of cast-iron, has been that the problem has not been attacked properly. It would be well to select the most probable working hypothesis which we can find, and proceed to test that hypothesis by comparison with observed facts, and by making new observations specially designed for such a test. Our first step, then, is to select the most probable working hypothesis ; and to attempt this selection, to state the hypothesis and its immediate corollaries, and to take some first steps toward testing it, is the object of the present paper. Its chief purpose is to bring the hypothesis to the attention of those who are more familiar with the evidence than the writer can pretend to be, and in a better position both to present new evidence and to discuss it. The hypothesis here selected is, that composition governs properties in the case of cast-iron, in the same general way and for the same reasons as in the case of steel, mutatis mutandis. This hypothesis, which of course makes no claim to originality, certainly seems reasonable and probable; its exposition and discussion are made easy by our existing knowledge of the constitution of normal or " carbon " steel; it therefore seems worthy of consideration.

A REVIEW of the steps which have been made to increase knowledge in the field of ferrous physical metallurgy during the closing period of World War II brings both pleasure and disappointment. Contributions of great value have been made, to be sure. However, due partly to the stress of the times, researchers in this field have been in the main directing their attention toward the short-range problems involved in the development and production of materiel for war. Furthermore, publication of the results of a great number of studies has had to be delayed. Much of the German work may, indeed, be lost entirely, owing to the efficiency of our bombers, which managed to account for most of the famous Kaiser Wilhelm Institut of Dusseldorf, not to mention the other large laboratories and manufacturing plants throughout that country. It would seem safe to assume, however, that fundamental research in Germany had been forced to give way to the shallow, but more pressing, engineering problems of a country trying to avoid defeat. In Russia the picture has been clouded by the limitations imposed upon comunication; but this much does seem clear: Russia alone among the great nations of the world has maintained her long-range view and has continued to foster research of the most fundamental type. English workers; on the other hand, appear to have been able only to meet the demands of the pressing problems of war, and their studies have been of the short-range variety. That metallurgical research of any sort should have continued in France during this chaotic period in her history would seem impossible, but, amazingly, a small handful of scientists did manage to carry on their work, and it is to be hoped that more will be heard from them in the future.

In 1957, Charles1 first presented an analysis of a relationship between the energy expended in comminution and the extent of size reduction achieved. Subsequently, Schuhmann extended and interpreted Charles' approach to comminution. According to their analysis, the energy, E, expended in comminuting unit mass of fairly uniformly-sized material is related to the size modulus of the product, k, by where a is the distribution modulus (slope of the log-log cumulative size distribution plot) and C is a constant, which is primarily determined by properties of the solid. If there is any fundamental basis for the E vs k relationship, E must necessarily be concerned with the useful work for the size reduction process and not necessarily the work input, as discussed in detail by Harris.3 Charles and numerous other investigators tested this equation only by relating k to the grinding time, assuming expended energy to be directly proportional to time, but never directly measuring power. In our laboratories, we recently constructed a special batch ball mill with which the power could be accurately determined with torque measuring apparatus.4 With this device, a direct test of the Charles relationship could then be made for ball milling. 5 EXPERIMENTAL A stainless steel mill, 11.5 in. long and 10 in. in inside diam, lined with eight low-silhouette lifter bars, was used for these experiments. The grinding media consisted of 30 kg of single sized, 1-in. diam, stainless steel balls, which occupied about 50% of the total mill volume under static conditions. The void fraction of the static ball load was approximately 0.4, and for the dry grinding conditions used, the corresponding interstitial volume was filled when about 3300 g of the dolomite feed material was present. The 7x9 mesh dolomite used as feed was obtained as a natural, uncrushed product thus as- suring a random distribution of feed particle shapes. Charge weights of 660, 1320, 1980, 2480, 3300, 3960 and 5280 g, which correspond to 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, l00%, 120%, and 160% of the interstitial load, respectively, were used. Grinding times of 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 150, 200 and 300 revolutions were considered, with the mill operating at 54 rpm (approximately 60% of critical speed). The tests were made sequentially, in that the size distribution obtained after a certain grinding interval was utilized as the feed for the subsequent period of grinding. Agreement with control experiments where the mill ran continuously for the entire interval was excellent. Torque measurements were made utilizing a Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton SR-4 torque pickup in the manner that has been described previously.3 Standard wet (to obtain the -400 mesh material) and dry sieving procedures were followed using the Tyler full screen series. RESULTS The Gaudin-Schuhmann size distributions obtained in all of these experiments are characterized by distribution moduli (slopes), a, of about 0.66 and are representative of normal dry batch ball milling of a material like dolomite.
