THE Corporation operates concentrators in four camps: Casapalca. Morococha, Cerro de Pa-co, and Mahr. The present concentrator at Cerro de Pasco is the newest having been completed in 1943. and that at Casapalca the oldest, having been built originally as a gravity concentrator, in 1889. Prior to 1925 the Corporation's milling operations were confined to the beneficiation of silver-bearing copper ores, and treatment of these ore: by flotation was started in 1918. Although fairly large deposits of complex, fine-grained lead-zinc ores existed, little progress had been made in the treatment of such ores--in Peru or elsewhere-until the early 'twentics. The Casapalca concentrator began the selettive concentration of complex leadzinc ores by all-flotation methods in 1925, or contemporaneously with the commercial development of selective lead-zinc flotation in the United State:.

A method is described whereby the behavior of the front is approximated when gas is injected into a thick reservoir having reasonably homogeneous properties. The method is applied to the Abqaiq field of Saudi Arabia. The producing member is the Arab-D, a high-permeability calcarenite which has no continuous betlding planes. Field performance indicates the injected gas to be partially miscible with the reservoir oil because gas volume factors experienced are lower than those predicted by the gas law. Eqlrilibril~m calculations confirnz ihis and also show that the volume factor may vary appreciably, depending on the relative quantities of oil and gas in contact in the reservoir; consequently, volutnetric balances are made for the purpose of determining the behavior of the gas volume factor during injection history. The effect of gravity segregation on position and shape of the gas front is approximated by dividing the producing section into three zones vertically and tracing the movement of the average interface in each zone, with counterflow of oil and gas taking place betweell zones behind the front. This results in a gas front that advances more rapidly along the top of [he formation than along the base, producing an "umbrella" effect in cross section that becomes more pronounced as the front progresses. The calculations cover the gas-injection period of Abqaiq field history through 1958, and the position of the gas front is plotted at one-year intervals. Finally, some comparisotls between the calcrlated fronial position and the gas-oil contact as Measured by neutron logs are made. INTRODUCTION Fig. 1 is a structure contour map of the Abqaiq field. For analytical purpcses, the field has been divided into two areas designated A and B, as shown on the map. Gas injection into Area A was begun in early 1954 into two wells located near the crest of the structure on the north-south axis of the anticline. During the period covered by this paper, the average injection rate has been 122 MMscf/D with a maximum sustained rate of 160 MMscf/D. The reservoir pressure has been maintained at 2,450 psig since start of gas injection. The reservoir originally was undersaturated but, prior to pressure maintenance, the pressure was drawn below the bubble point in most of the Area A section, creating an in-place free-gas saturation of 8 per cent at the crest of the structure. The average critical gas saturation is 13 per cent established by laboratcry core tests. That the entire reservoir remained below critical gas saturation prior to gas injection is borne out by the fact that none of the crestal wells have exhibited high gas-oil ratios during production history. The Area A reservoir is a carbonate section about 200-ft thick having average porosity and permeability of the order of 22 per cent and 500 md, respectively. This article presents the results of an analysis of grinding of 1:1 mixtures of 4x8-mesh quartz and limestone in laboratory ball and rod mills. From these experiments, the amount of energy consumed in grinding each component of the mixture was determined. In the ball mill, limestone consumes slightly more energy than quartz in the initial stages of grinding, but as the grinding proceeds quartz begins to consume a slightly greater fraction of the energy. The postulate that the fraction of energy consumed by any material in a ball mill is proportional to its volume fraction has been shown to be approximately true. On the other hand, in a rod mill energy consumption by quartz and limestone is equal only in the initial stages of grinding, with energy consumption by quartz greatly exceeding that by limestone as rod milling proceeds. Preferential energy consumption in tumbling mills has been discussed in a number of papers. For example, from an analysis of the kinetics of comminu- tion in ball mills, Arbiter and Bhrany' obtained rate equations based on the postulate that only coarse particles are ground, indicating that fine particles are protected from the action of the balls by coarser particles. In rod mills this protective action is much more pronounced than in ball mills. Recent studies on the rod milling of limestone-quartz mixtures have shown that this protective action causes the mineral with the lowest grindability (quartz in this instance) to consume the greater fraction of energy. 2 However, in the ball milling of mixtures it has been postulated that the consumption of energy by one of the constituents is determined by its volume fraction within the mill. 3 Possibly this hypothesis may be a simplification of the ball milling of mixtures since the protective action suggested by Arbiter and Bhrany may result in some preferential energy consumption by one of the constituents of a mixture. The objective of this study has been to determine preferential energy consumption in laboratory ball and rod mills by analyzing size distributions of each material in the products obtained from grinding 1:l mixtures of quartz and limestone. The Blueberry mine is about 10 miles west of Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan. The property consists of about 2000 acres in sees. 3, 4 and 5, T. 47, N.R. 28W. and secs. 32, 33 and 34, T. 48, N.R. 28W., and, excepting one intervening 80-acre tract, contains the iron formation for a length of about 21/4 miles. The property is traversed by State Highway M-28 and is served by three railways, the Chicago & Northwestern, the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic, and the Lake Superior & Ishpeming. The Northwestern transports the ore to a dock at Escanaba; the other railways, to Marquette. Ore for Chicago goes via Escanaba and that for Lower Lake ports, as Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo, via Marquette. History The presence of iron formation in this property has been known for many years, and mining operations on a small scale have been carried on intermittently. The Dexter mine, on the SE.1/4 of the NW.1/4 of sec. 3, was worked from 1883 to 1897 and 118,000 tons of ore was mined. From 1907 to 1915 extensive exploration was carried on over the whole of sec. 3, including 79 diamond-drill holes with a total footage of 26,000 ft. The Chase mine, on the NE.1/4 of the NE.1/4 of sec. 3, was developed from this exploration work, but after about 200,000 tons had been mined the property was abandoned. From 1908 to 1910 exploration was carried on by another company on sec. 4, 47-28, including four drill holes with a total footage of about 5000 ft. Much of the drilling on sec. 3 and of the exploration work on sec. 4 are within the present developed area of the Blueberry mine. A general campaign of diamond-drill exploration was undertaken in 1924, and within a year a considerable amount of ore was developed. The Ford Motor Co. then took an option on the property and carried on check drilling and diamond-drill work until the spring of 1926, when enough ore had been developed to warrant the sinking of a shaft

The irradiation-induced densification of pyrolytic carbon has been shown to take place by a simple first-order rate process. The values of the densification constant, kd, for isotropic carbons are 1.0 x 10-22, 1.4 X 10-22 and 2.8 X 10-22 (nut)-1 at irradiation temperatures of 520o, 670°, and 1000oC, respectively. The apparent activation energy obtained from the temperature dependence of kd for isotropic carbons is about 0.2 ev. Estimates of the maximum stresses that develop in isotropic carbons owing to shrinkage onto an unyielding support show that stresses in excess of 15,000 psi may be avoided during irradiatian at 600" and 1000°C if the initial coating density is kept above 1.5 and 1.9 g per cu cw, respectively. If a carbon coating on an unyielding support is not completely isotropic, stresses may continue to build up at high neutron exposures after densification is complete because of continued anisotropic distortion. Stresses in excess of 15,000 psi from this source may be avoided during irradiation at 1000°C if' the Bacon anisotropy factor is kept below 1.3. A variety of applications of carbon and graphite in nuclear technology has stimulated numerous studies of the effect of neutron irradiation on these materials One of the most interesting problems associated with the use of carbons and graphites in the high fast neutron fluxes of nuclear reactors arises as a consequence of the neutron-induced dimensional changes that occur during irradiation. Energetic neutrons displace car- bon atoms from their lattice positions; and, depending on the temperature, the interstitials and vacancies produced migrate to form clusters, recombine, or are annihilated at dislocations or crystallite boundaries. The competition of various sinks for the point defects results in structure-sensitive bulk-dimensional changes that vary with temperature in a complicated way. This paper deals with the neutron-induced dimensional changes in turbostratic carbons that are being used as coatings on nuclear fuel particles. Details of the structure of these carbons and the variations of their structure with deposition conditions have been reported.'-3 It has been shown in previous work that the neutron-

These iron mines of Spain are located on the mountain ridge forming the boundary between the Teruel and Guadalajara provinces, called Sierra Menera. They form a property of 25 mines extending over an area of 1,677 hectares (4,140 acres) situated at a height varying from 1,200 m. (3,940 ft.) to 1,500 m. (4,920 ft.) above sea level. The deposit follows the direction north to south; huge masses of ore are being found both on the slopes and at the summit of the Sierra. The ore occurs among quartzites and magnesite limestone, in some places overlaid by quartzite 15 m. (50 ft.) thick; in some others (and this is more general) the ore is overlaid by earth and boulders of quartzite origin; this layer is about 8 m. (26 ft.) thick. The ore beds occupy the geological horizon of the Superior Trias or Muschelkask, which are here in direct contact with the Silurian quartzites. The lime-stones have been more or less transformed. There is ample evidence to show that these mines were worked in very ancient times—objects and tools employed in mining by the ancient Romans and Arabs are to be found plentifully in old workinigs which extend down into the deposits. It has been estimated that more than 10,000,000 tons of ore were mined in the old days in this district and carried to the primitive forges in the vicinity where iron of much renown in Spain was extracted. Remains of more than 20 of these forges are found in the neighborhood of Sierra Menera and are usually situated near waterfalls and forests. Much investigation has been carried on for the purpose of determining the quantity of ore to be found in these mines, but no exact calculations can be made at present. When the investigation is completed it will surely be found that the deposit contains a much larger quantity than the 100,000,000 tons indicated by the present workings. The mines are now worked as open quarries and this method can and will be followed for a long time, probably until the deposit is worked out. Figs. 1 and 2 give some idea of the quarries in operation and the reserves, the iron-ore stocks, screening installation and general arrangement. Temperature-dependent functions of various ten-sile flour stress and fracture parameters were investigated on iron and low composition alloys of Fe-C, Fe-Cr, Fe-Mn, and Fe-Ni. Data were obtained over a range of test temperatures from 200" to -196"C at an initial strain rate of 0.01 min". It was found that the strain-hardening exponent, n, for the Fe-Ni alloys increased significantly at very low testing temperatures with increased alloy addition. Also, the stress and strain at fracture followed a predictable transitional type of behavior. The flour stress-temperature dependence was evaluated employing the relation: M where it is shown that composition can strongly influence the constant M. An empirical formula describing this effect is as follows: M = MI (equivalent at. pct Ni)-'" Some preliminay, tests were run on several commercial steels to test the generality of this relationship. One of the phenomenological explanations of the ductile-to-brittle transition encountered in bcc metals is based upon the difference in the temperature dependence of the flow and fracture stresses.' It states simply that the fracture stress is relatively insensitive to temperature and that the yield or flow stress rises rapidly with decreasing temperature so that, when the flow stress reaches the fracture stress, brittle fracture occurs without appreciable plastic deformation. This behavior is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1 where the ductile-to-brittle transition is shown to occur at two possible temperatures. The lowest temperature, TB, represents essentially completely brittle behavior while the higher temperature, TN, represents "notch" brittle behavior. Support for this theory is obtained when it is observed that fcc metals, which do not commonly have a ductile-to-brittle transition, also do not commonly exhibit any strong temperature de- pendence of the yield stress. This relationship of yield or flow stress behavior with the ductile-to-brittle transition has been generally observed for most metals representative of these two crystallo-graphic structures. One exception to this generalization appears in the case of tantalum where no apparent ductile-to-brittle transition has been observed. However, this may simply be an indication that this type of behavior is not directly related to the flow stress and that some other mechanism such as twinning must also be operative. A comparison of the typical temperature dependence of the yield stress of some representative metals is shown in Fig. 2. In an earlier publication* I showed the development of the instantaneous point source solution for a well producing at a constant rate at the center of a system of two radial, adjoining sands of different permeabilities. I also showed how a wellbore radius could be incorporated if this were the development required. For the purpose of that paper and the point I wished to make, this solution served. It yielded a simplifying solution of sands in series identified by Eqs. VI-26 and VI-27. (These equations are reproduced in part by Bixel and van Poollen as their Eq. 3, Page 302.) I am well aware that the simplified solutions are approximations. The facts that these Ei-functions satisfy the diffusivity equation and meet the boundary conditions both at the well and at the interface between sands, and that the earliest time considerations yield zero pressure drop, are evidence that the solutions are good approximations. This was the purpose for these formulas, which I interpret that where the permeabilities are of finite order of magnitudes in the respective media, the relations give satisfactory answers. However, from the authors' point of view there are reservations, which leads me to consider their entire generalization as illustrated in their Figs. 1 through 14. What I understand from their storage capacity, relationship Fs, which is the ratio of the product of porosity and compressibility of Sand II to Sand I, that is employed here by the authors as a correlative means of identifying one figure from another, there is nothing in the exact mathematics that supports such a term as a means of correlation. This is taken out of context, unsustained that this applies. Here the mathematics are known, where the true correlation is the diffusivity term of one sand to another. This entails permeability that refers back again to the term M in their paper for the transmis-sibility of fluid from one sand to the other that should have also been a part of this storage capacity. In Figs. 8 through 14, which purported to show the simplified equation following this correlation, there are apparent discontinuities for M equal to or less than 0.1000 that differ from the trends for greater values of M. In this connection there is no reference radius given for this cumulative pressure drop in the paper that would permit me to make these calculations. However, what is clear for M equal to 0.1000 or less we are treated to almost a closed barrier at the interface; a condition entered by the writers without qualification. This across-the-board treatment of these simplified formulas, whatever the motive of the authors, enters into a range of permeabilities that even I as the contributor would have reservations that such could apply. Under comparable conditions I would be looking at a closed reservoir or some facsimile for such. The extent to which the approximation or the exact equations pertain is not evident in the generality offered by Bixel and van Poollen in their paper. Only when they or other writers show the comparison of the pressure distributions within the formations can one be able to judge the rational limits to subscribe to the simplified formulas.

A method has been developed for determining the relative water wet-tability (fraction of the surface wet by water) of porous media. This method involves the adsorption of methylene blue dye from an aqueous solution onto the solid surfaces of rock contacted by the injected dye solution. Experiments on Berea snndstone cores have shown that water-wet cores adsorb a large amount of dye from solution. In oil-wet cores, however, the injected aqueous dye solution is prevented from contacting the adsorptive surfuces by a film of oil and virtually no dye is adsorbed. This method was tested by experiments on mixtures of water-wet and oil-wet sand. Using the dye adsorption method, it was possible to determine quantitatively the fraction of water-wet and oil-wet sarzd in such mixtures. The dye adsorption test is readily applied to determinitrg the relative water wettability of fresh oilfield cores. The cores are not extracted before testing. Observed values of the wettability of field cores tested to date have varied from 100 to 6 per cent water wet. INTR OD UCTIO N Recent articles1 ' have emphasized the important role that wettability plays in almost all phases of reservoir rock behavior. It has been shown that wettability has a profound effect on the interstitial water saturation, residual oil saturation, capillary pressure, relative permeability, waterflood behavior, and resistivity index of oilfield cores. A quantitative investiga- tion of the effect of wettability on these core properties is severely handicapped by the lack of a simple technique for measuring the wettability of a porous medium. If such a technique were available, it would provide investigators with a means of gaining insight into the distribution of phases within a core. A number of qualitative methods of estimating wettability are known. These include contact angle measurements, flotation tests and studies of displacement pressure: imbibition7 and relative permeability data.' Using these tests, it is usually possible to classify a core as water-wet, oil-wet, or some intermediate degree of wettability. One recently proposed method involving measurement of nuclear magnetic relaxatione offers promise of determining quantitatively the fractional wettability of cores. The equipment is rather elaborate and necessary treatment of the cores before testing probably alters the natural wettability. This latter point also applies to most of the cited qualitative methods. This paper presents a new technique for determining water wettability of cores; it is based on measurements of the dye adsorption capacity of the core. This method has the advantage of requiring relatively simple equipment and involves minimum handling of the core before testing. It is important to distinguish between the various concepts of wettability referred to in the literature. The term "wetting" is defined by Bartell as that phenomenon which occurs when a solid and liquid phase come in contact in any manner so as to form a solid-liquid interface. A preferentially water-wet solid is defined by Jennings in terms of the advancing contact angle in the solid water-oil systems. Brown and Fatt regard fractional wettability as the fraction of the total surface area that is preferentially oil-wet or water-wet. However, none of these definitions adequately describes the type wettability measured by the dye test. This calls for the introduction of a new term, "relative water wettability", which we define as the fraction of the total surface area of a core contacted by injected water. DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The ability of a porous medium (especially the clays) to adsorb large quantities of surfactants, dyes, etc., is well known. It is reasonable to assume that a substance can be adsorbed from solution onto a solid surface only if the solution contacts the surface. In this connection Shapiro" has shown by experiments on silica gel that completely dry gel will adsorb methyl red dye from a benzene solution. On the other hand, if a film of water more than several molecules thick is present on the silica gel, the adsorption capacity of the gel for the dye is drastically reduced. Thus, a study of the dye adsorption capacity of cores should give some clue as to the fluid distribution on the surface of the core. TEST OF METHOD As a qualitative check on this theory, dye adsorption tests were run on similar Berea sandstone cores (Table 1, Cores 1-5). Cores saturated initially with water and flooded with 0.01 per cent aqueous methylene blue adsorbed 0.58 mg dye/gm of core. Similar cores saturated initially with water, driven to irreducible water with oil, and then flooded with the same dye solution also adsorbed 0.58 mg dye/gm of core. Another core, treated with a 5 per cent Dri-Film solution, dried and saturated with oil (Soltrol) adsorbed no dye when the dye solution was injected. These tests confirm

This paper relates entirely to the casting of brass under fluid pressure in steel dies. Die castings of metals and alloys of low melting point have been available for many years but the development of brass die castings has been relatively recent, occurring within the past five years. The successful developnlent of brass die castings has resulted from the availability of alloy steels that would give satisfactory life as dies and the development of suitablc die-casting machines. The melting point of copper is 1084" C. (1983" F.) and of a high brass about 900" C. (1652" F.), as compared to 327.5" C. (621.5" F.) for lead, 419.4' C. (786.7" F.) for zinc and 658.7" C. (1217.7" F.) for aluminum, temperatures that are indicative of the casting temperatures required for the various types of alloys, of which the melting points are somewhat lower than those of the pure metals. Type of Die-casting Machine In the well-known plunger and gooseneck types of die-casting machines used for casting the alloys of relatively lower melting point, much of the working mechanism is immersed in the molten alloy. For alloys having the relatively high melting point of brass, this obviously is impossible. Machines with a separate melting chamber are essential. Two rather distinct types are in extensive use at the present time, the Pack and Polak machines, the former designed by Charles Pack and developed at the American Brass Co., the latter developed by Joseph Polak, of Prague, Czeclioslovakia. The principles of operation of these machines have been described in articles by Pack1,2,3 and by Sieg.4

The titaniferous magnetite deposit at Iron Mountain, Wyoming, is in Precambrian anorthosite. Individual ore bodies are lenses, commonly arranged en echelon, conformable to the platy crystal structure and compositional layering of the anorthosite; a few transect these features at various angles. The ore bodies are on the east flank of the principal anticline in the anorthosite mass. Magnetite and ilmenite, accompanied by spine!, are the ore minerals. The principal gangue minerals are olivine, which was introduced with the ore, and plagioclase, the chief constituent of the anorthosite. The anticlinal region appears to have been a structurally weak zone, and westward-bowing curves of the axis were especially favorable sites for localization of the two largest massive ore bodies. These bodies are synclinal and plunge southeast. The proportion of magnetite-ilmenite to olivine and to anorthosite appears to be related to structural features. Where magnetite-ilmenite is present with olivine, the magnetite-ilmenite is encountered along the most pronounced parts of a fold where anorthite content is highest, whereas olivine is associated principally with more gently folded portions. During granulation and recrystallization of the anorthosite mass, temperature and pressure changes furnished the energy required to release and mobilize iron and other elements that migrated to areas of low pressure, the ore zone. Some iron and magnesium may have combined with silica from partly dissociated plagioclase to form olivine. The ore formed by replacement of anorthosite as indicated by: (1) the marked changes in mineralogy along strike, dip, and plunge of an ore body; (2) the concentration of massive ore in folds and olivine on limbs; ( 3) the halo of low-grade mineralized rock that transects the structure of the anorthosite in the hanging wall; and ( 4) the layering in the large southern ore body, that strikes more easterly than the trend of the body.

Iron ore in the Menominee district is mined from two iron-formations of middle Precambrian age. The older formation is present in the northeastern part; is composed mainly of hematite, magnetite, quartz, and minor silicates; and contains about 34 per cent iron. The rock has been so coarsened by meta- morphism that concentration of magnetite and hematite is feasib!e, and pellets containing more than 60 per cent iron are being produced. The older formation is also present in the southeastern part where it has 1:een only slightly metamorphosed. Ore containing more than 50 per cent iron was formerly mined from local residual concentrations of iron oxides from which silica had been sufficiently leached, or replaced by iron oxide, or affected by combinations of these processes. The younger iron-formation occurs in the western part of the district and, if unaltered, is interlayered siderite and chert. The ore in this area also contains more than 50 per cent iron and formed as local residual concentrations but in two stages. The siderite was converted to iron oxides (hematite and "limonite"), and silica was contemporaneously or subsequently removed by leaching, or replacement, or combinations of these processes.

A committee of three was appointed to draft a suitable resolution of memorial of the services of Joseph Esrey Johnson, Jr. The committee consists of Joseph W. Richards, Chairman, J. V. N. Dorr and Allen H. Rogers. William R. Walker was elected a Director in place of J. E. Johnson, Jr., and Edwin Ludlow was elected a member of the Executive Committee in his stead. George C. Stone was appointed Chairman of the Committee on Membership in place of Mr. Johnson. The following resolutions were then adopted: RESOLVED, That a special business meeting of the Institute be and the same hereby is appointed to be, held at the office of the Institute, No. 29 West 39th Street, Borough of Manhattan, City of New York, on the 27th day of June, 1919, it 8.30 o'clock in the P. M. to consider and take action upon the proposal to change the name of the Institute to "American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Incor-porated," and the further proposal to extend the corporate purposes of the Institute so that it shall, in addition to its other powers, be empowered to promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of, those employed in these industries, by all lawful means.

The recent iastallation of a combination dust catcher, gas washer and precipitator at Carrie blast furnaces of the Homestead Steel Works has given very satisfactory results. The following description of the gas-cleaning installation is based on actual operating experience. When Carrie blast furnace No. 3 was rebuilt the decision was made to fine-clean all the gas produced by the furnace, because the management wanted fine-cleaned gas for fuel in the stoves and boilers. In order to keep the installation cost as low as possible, the gas-cleaning system was streamlined. All by-pass lines and goggle valves for bypass lines were eliminated from the system. A radical departure from the use of 8-in. tubes in the Cottrell-type precipitators was made by using 12-in. diameter tubes in a single compartment, the single compartment being divided into two units by a single partition wall in the top header. The Furnace Proper A few of the characteristic points and dimensions of the furnace proper are: Hearth diameter.............. 26 ft. o in. Bosh diameter............... 29 ft. 1 3/4 in. Stock-line diameter........... 20 ft. o in. Large-bell diameter........... 14 ft. 8 in. Small-bell diameter........... 6 ft. 6 in. Height of furnace from center of iron notch to bottom of large bell, closed............ 94 ft. 4 in. Height of furnace from center of iron notch to main platform ...................... 105 ft. o in. The furnace top is equipped with a MC-Kee revolving distributor, the operation of which is electrically interlocked with the skips, bell hoists, and coke-weighing and charging apparatus through a Freyn automatic charging control. The gas leaves the furnace first through four offtakes, 5 ft. 9 in. in diameter, then through uptakes that, are approximately 85 ft. high, which feed into a single down-comer that is 9 ft. in diameter. The inlet pipe at the top of the dust catchei is 9 ft. in diameter; it is flared to a conical shape as it extends down inside the dust-catcher shell, which is 35 ft. in diameter, 37 ft. high on the straight side, and has a conical top and bottom. Eight members of the Board, the Secretary of the Institute, and eleven guests were present. Vice-president Henry S. Drinker presided. The President was authorized to appoint delegates to a meeting, on May 16, of the League to Enforce Peace. The Joint Conference Committee reported that the American Institute of Metals had accepted the invitation to form the Institute of Metals Division of this Institute. The Committee on Publications of the Institute of Metals was added to the Committee on Publications of the A. I. M. E. Exchange of one volume of Transactions of the A. I. M. E. at reduced price to members of the British Institute of Metals was authorized, in return for the reduced price given to our Institute of Metals Division on the annual proceedings of the British Institute.

TWENTY years or so ago I wrote an article on management which consisted mostly of a chart similar to thousands of others of that day showing line functions, staff functions, and the chain of command in a typical mining organization. Since hen we have been "bossing" from the faces to the swivel chair and we have made many errors of no little expense to our companies. We have kept the chart in mind but many times we have changed the functions to fit the people we have had to work with. Good management after all is getting results with the people, the equipment, the supplies, and the natural conditions of the coal seam or seams and adjacent strata present. We have made, with little effort, a good showing with average people and equipment in good natural conditions. We have made a miserable showing (although expending every personal effort) with better than aver- age people and equipment in bad natural conditions. In the latter case many of our stockholders felt that better management would have found some way to save their investment. Perhaps they were right.
