THE- impression which the public has of northern Canada is that it is a' vast wilderness of forests; river's, and. lakes, sparsely inhabited by. a few Indians and `containing a few, scattered trading posts of the Hudson Bay Co. This is far from the facts. The building of the Canadian Pacific Railway led to the discovery, in 1883, of the nickel deposits of Sudbury, Ont.; these are the largest known nickel deposits in the world and produce about 90 per cent. of the world's output of nickel. The building of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway north, from North Bay, to open up farming lands along Lake. Temiskaming, resulted in the discovery and development of the great silver deposits of the Cobalt area, Ontario. Since the discovery of these deposits in 1903 to Dec. 31, .1923, Cobalt has produced a total of ' 327,301,897 oz. of silver, valued at $212,668,434, and paid in. dividends $88,338,185. In 1923 the production of Cobalt amounted to 10,285,247 oz. of silver. Just south of Cobalt, in South Lorrain,. a. new silver district has recently been developed and mills have started production. These deposits are of such extent that 'a branch railroad is under construction from Cobalt to that area. Northwest of Cobalt is the Gowganda silver area which is also a producer of silver ore and is now attracting outside attention. This area is not connected by railroad.

Fe-C alloys have been investigated at temperatures below the eutectoid transformation to determine whether the superplasticity phenomenon exists for these materials. As a result of void formation at the carbide-ferrite interfaces that led to void coalescence and premature failure, the large elongations characteristic of superplustic matem'als did not develop. It had generally been assumed that the conditions for obtaining superplasticity include: a) T/Tm =0.5, b) a strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress that results in m s 0.3, and c) fine-grain structure. Although superphsticity was not observed in the alloys studied, stress-strain rate measurements indicated that an additional condition for the existence of superplasticitv in Fe-C allovs is that the fine-wain structure be equiaxed in agveement with previous results on Zn-Al al1oys. MANY investigations have been made on the hot deformation of iron-base alloys in order to obtain an understanding of the variables that may affect high-temperature strength and ductility.'-6 However, only a few papers have studied the effect of carbon content on the high-temperature properties of iron-base alloys. Peretayat'ko and Zaikov and Wallquist and carlen4 studied the effect of carbon on strength in the y temperature range, and recently Robbins, Shepard, and sherby6 studied the influence of carbon on the torsional behavior of iron in the a and cu-plus-cemen-tite temperature ranges. In addition to studying hot deformation behavior, current investigations have also been concerned with the phenomenon of superplasticity in nonferrous materials, and, in particular, ferrous alloys. Superplasticity is identified by the increased resistance to necking that results from a high strain rate sensitivity of the flow tress. ackofenr proposed the strain rate hardening coefficient m = d log a/d log e as a measure of strain rate sensitivity and showed that m must be "-0.3 for superplasticity to exist. In addition, a fine-grained microstrcture,- a eutectic or eutectoid ornosition,- and a test temperature in the creep range (TITm > 0.5)" have also been advanced as necessary conditions for superplasticity. Although many workers""23 investigated superplasticity associated with the allotropic transformation in iron and the eutectoid transformation in steel, and recently chadler " and orrison have studied superplasticity in the a - y phase region, no one has measured the superplastic effect in the a + cementite temperature region. Therefore, the purpose of this investiga- tion was to determine the effect of carbon content, microstructure, and test temperature on the strain rate sensitivity of Fe-C alloys at temperatures below the eulectoid transformation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Fe-C alloys with carbon contents of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0 wt pct were prepared as 100 lb 54 in. ingots by vacuum-induction melting. The compositions are listed in Table I. All the ingots were soaked at 2100°F for 2 hr prior to rolling to 4 in. plate. The minimum finishing temperature for rolling was 1800°F. The plate was sheared in 10-in. lengths and tensile bars were rough-machined prior to heat treatment. The samples were heat-treated according to the schedule in Table I1 in order to obtain a fine-grained microstructure consisting of finely dispersed carbides in a matrix of small ferrite grains. All the tensile specimens were heat-treated prior to finish machining, and tensile testing was accomplished on an Instron machine in conjunction with a clamshell furnace. The buttonhead specimen configuration is shown in Fig. 1. An inert atmosphere, helium, was maintained during testing with a steel tube shroud in a bell jar arrangement. Predried helium was continually purged over the buttonhead specimens and exhausted through ceramic fiber at the bottom of the tube to keep oxidation at a minimum and to prevent

It is explained why the bottom portion of freely suspended tubing in a pumping well buckles and straightens in succession during the pumping cycle. Field evidence of resulting rod-on-tubing wear, excessive polished rod load, and excessive horsepower are given. The possibility that buckling hastens pump wear is strongly suggested. Means for either prevention of buckling or for mini-mizing its effects are explained, their relative merits compared, and field results of their use given. These means are: tension anchors, tail pipe, sucker rod guides, and corrosion inhibitors. Charts and formulas for best use of tension anchors, tail pipe, and guides are given. Use of tension anchors, or compression anchors with a heavy tail pipe, prevents both buckling and breathing, thus improving volumetric efficiency. Without tail pipe, buckling above compression anchors precludes such improvement. INTRODUCTION It is well known that a column must be subjected to some compression in order to buckle; and also that a structural member does not buckle if subjected to a tension. When consideration is given to a tubular column, the question may be asked, "How is the buckling phenomenon affected by inside or outside pressure?' At first, it seemingly should not be affected. However, this is not so. In order to arrive at a correct deduction one should first understand the basic reasons for buckling of a column under loading*. Then he should add to the effect of that loading the effect of pressure. Following this procedure, one may discover quite unexpected phenomena. In some cases, when subjected to more pressure inside than outside, a pipe may buckle under tension. In other cases, a pipe may remain straight, although subjected to a very large compression. In 1950 and 1951 it was explained why the bottom portion of a string of pipe freely suspended in a well does not buckle even when subjected to a large compression due to buoy- ancy.2,3 It was shown that the com-monly used concept of a neutral point, as being a point in the string with neither compression nor tension, is inadequate, and a more relevant definition of the neutral point was introduced. The findings were also generalized to cases of different pressures inside and outside a pipe.3a Later, in a further generalization, allowance was made for variations of stress and pressure with depth.' The findings were applied to the new technique of hydrostatic high pressure testing of lengths of pipe in the mill.5 In 1952 it was observed that previous theoretical findings apply to tubing in pumping wells. The lower part of freely suspended tubing buckles during the upstroke portion of the pumping cycle. Later, it was ascertained that this phenomenon is responsible for wear and malfunctioning of the equipment. Various remedial measures were devised and successful field trials conducted. TWO of the most useful and important equations available to the metallurgist for the study of plastic deformation of metals are the Huber-von Mises-Henckyl-~ and the St. Venant7-10 equations. Huber-von Mises-Hengky Equation The Huber-von Mises-Hencky equation answers the question: When does plastic flow occur in metal that is subjected to a multi-axial stress? It occurs, according to this equation, when the three principal stresses,t UI, u2, and u3 satisfy the equation: (<ri - <r2)2 + (<r2 - <rsY + (ff! - <r3)* = 2Ki [i] Here K is the yield strength of the material as determined in an ordinary tensile test. If the quantities ul, 52, andas are assigned to the coordinates of a Cartesian three-dimensional system, this expression describes a cylinder whose axis of symmetry is inclined at equal angles to the three coordinate axes4s6 (Fig. I). The radius of this cylinder is .\/%K. For the purpose of simplicity, it is sometimes advantageous to ascribe the values al/K = sl, az/K = s2, UD/K = SJ to the three coordinate axes instead of the principal stress alone. In this case, Eq. Sputtered aluminum thin films were prepared in each of two conventional bell-jar vacuum systems. One system utilized an inner "getter sputtering" enclosure; the second system was a standard diode sputterirlg arrangement. Consistent and repeatable film properties were obtained in both systems provided sufficient cleanup and presputter time was allowed. The various problems associated with aluminum sputtering are discussed, with pavticular attention to the vzinimization of film contamination by outgassing and oxidation. The growth and structure of the aluminum thin films were studied with the aid of electron wzicroscopy and related to deposition rate, substrate temperature, and film thickness. The resistivity of the films was correlated to film structure and surface roughness. Resistiuities as low as 3.5 microhm-cm (2.3 x bulk resistiuity) were measured for relatively thick films (20,000). THIS investigation was undertaken to explore the problems and film characteristics associated with the sputtering of aluminum. Earlier work reported on aluminum sputtering has stressed the contamination of both the cathode and film as well as abnormally low deposition rates.&apos; Data on sputtering yields,3 however, indicate that aluminum sputtering could be practical. Recently, it was shown by Theuerer and Hauser3 that aluminum sputtering was feasible in a conventional oil-diffusion pumped vacuum system provided an inner "getter sputtering" enclosure was employed to minimize gaseous contamination. This technique employs the getter action of aluminum to produce extremely low reactive gas partial pressures in the deposition zone. Aluminum films have already found use in solid-state electronic devices such as transistors and integrated microcircuits. To the present time, most aluminum films have been prepared by evaporation due to the ease with which this metal can be evaporated. Controlled sputtering of aluminum offers a number of advantages over evaporation, however, such as 1) manufacturing compatibility with other metals which must be sputtered, 2) better control of process variables resulting in more repeatable and uniform films, 3) generally better adhesion resulting from higher-energy metal atoms, 4) built-in material supply for continuous operation, and 5) the ability to deposit alloys. The data presented in this paper are the result of two separate studies. One study utilized a small "getter sputtering" enclosure (System A) and was concerned with the structure and properties of thin aluminum films up to about 1600A thick. In this thickness range, study of the film structure was possible with transmission electron microscopy. The second study was conducted with a conventional diode sputtering apparatus (System B) and covered $ much wider range of film thickness up to about 34,000A. Emphasis was placed on developing techniques which would extend aluminum sputtering to an existing in-line continuous deposition process.4 I) EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE System A. Fig. 1 shows a schematic of the "getter sputtering" inner chamber used and Fig. 2 is a photograph of this chamber mounted on an 18-in. access ring of a standard liquid-nitrogen trapped bell-jar vacuum system. This chamber was designed after a similar system used by Theuerer and auser.3 The configuration allowed the glow to emanate in all directions from the cathode. Argon (99.99&apos;) was allowed to enter only at the top of the chamber such that most of the reactive gases entering with the argon were reacted with the aluminum vapor and deposited on the chilled walls of the chamber before reaching the deposition zone. Provision was also made as shown, Fig. 1, for heating and cooling the substrate from about 20" to 400°C. The object of the writer is to call attention to a rather unique aggregation of economic products distributed over a line of succeeding formations about 3 mi. long, to be seen within a few miles of La Salle, Ill. Fig. 1 is an ideal section of the stratification exposed and exploited along a distance of 3 1/5 mi. in a southwesterly direction from the quarry of the Utica Hydraulic Cement Co. located near the historic site of Kaskaskia village to the Oglesby shaft at Oglesby. No attempt has been made to cover the whole field, special mention only being made (with the exception of two places) of the operations found along the course or parallel to the direction assumed in the ideal section. I have used Fig. 2, after J. R. Bent and De Witt Kelly, to locate the relation of the La Salle anticline to the coal mines of this district and to show the operation of No. 1 and 3 mincs of the Illinois Zinc Co. Anticline and the Rock Formations Owing to the structural deformation between La Salle and Utica, the older rocks of the state are exposed to the surface along the northern embankment and the bottoms of the Illinois River valley near the latter place. At; the Illinois Zinc Co. works, Sec. 16, Tp. 33, R 1, a well for water mas sunk 1828 ft. and samples taken every 10 ft. of the ground penetrated; duplicates were sent to Mr. Cady of the Illinois Geological Survey. A general compilation or synopsis study of this section is here presented. As the well is over 1 mi. west of the Western limb of the anticline, the section affords some reliable data. These samples were studied and interpreted by H. M. DuBois as Lower Magnesian, and by G. H. Cady as the Lower Magnesian. The results are given in Fig. 3. The most interesting geological feature of this district is the La Salle anticline. In 1865, Leo les Quereux, looking at Split Rock, asked how it happened that the upper coal measures overlie strata of the Lower Silurian and what has become of the formations which are generally found intermediate—the Upper Silurian, the Devonian and sub-carboniferous, and the lower member of the coal measures?

The East Texas area includes the northeast 38 counties of the state of Texas. It covers all, and extends beyond, the borders of what is commonly described as the East Texas Basin. It is one of the most important oil and gas-producing areas of the Mid-Continent Province. It includes four important oil fields—Van, East Texas, Cayuga and Long Lake— and the recent extension of Rodessa field into Cass County, Texas, may prove to be of major size. Four commercial gas fields are in this area— Bethany, Waskom, Cayuga and Long Lake. Up to January, 1936, all of the oil has been produced from the Upper Cretaceous formations, and most of that from the basal member, the Woodbine sand. Gas is produced from both the Upper and Lower Cretaceous formations. Development in Fields East Texas Field.—This field continued to dominate the drilling and production situation throughout the United States. There were 4036 wells completed in this field during 1935; that is, 365 more wells than were completed during 1934. Drilling activity was due to close spacing of wells and the addition of 10,000 acres to the field. The field is now drilled to a density of one well to 6½ acres, which is certainly more wells than necessary for economic production of the field. The close spacing of wells is due mostly to the type of proration, which is per well allowable based on a potential test, and does not take acreage into consideration, and also to the numerous small acreage tracts such as town lots and excess strips. The field now has 19,519 producing wells. The allowable production for the field during 1935 was 161,118,659 bbl.; estimated production, including illegal or "hot oil," was 174,200,150. The illegal production of oil gradually decreased throughout the year, until an estimated low was reached of 20,500 bbl. daily during the months of November and December. The price of oil remained at $1.00 per barrel throughout the year. As stated, about 10,000 acres were added to the field during the year, making a total of 128,000 productive acres. ENACTMENT of Public Law 290 by the 78th Congress authorized the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, to conduct an experimental program to develop the technology for obtaining oil from oil shale. In adopting and later extending this legislation, the Congress recognized the impending necessity of supplementing ground petroleum reserves with synthetic fuels. Under the provisions of this legislation, the Bureau of Mines, among other things, was charged with the responsibility of developing mining techniques, methods, and equipment for mining the oil shales of the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.

Production was first recorded from the Pioche district in 1864, and it has continued to show an inherent ability to take on new life after periods of depression in the metal markets. Production from replacement leadsilver- zinc sulfide ore bodies in limestones of Cambrian age now accounts for several times the gross value of silver production from rich fissures in Lower Cambrian Quartzite. Aggregate production of some 6 million tons represents a gross value over $100-million. Future output is expected mostly to be from limestone replacement deposits of which the most productive are "channels" of ore up to several hundred feet wide and several thousand feet long with thicknesses from a few feet up to 50 feet. Such channels are restricted to the lowermost limestone bed of the district, about 250 feet above the basement quartzite. The "blotter-like" characteristic of this highly productive Jimesto~e bed in absorbing mineralization is believed to be, at least in part, due to lithology, including free carbon in the bed, which has created a unique set of conditions for delicately balanced mineralizing solutions that rejected any tendency to replace siliceous wall rock and were properly constituted for replacement of Limestone. All recognizable orogenic history is considered to be related to the Basin and Range faulting that created the mountain ranges. The faults developed after mid-Tertiary time and after widespread extrusives that are themselves involved in the faulting. Flat faults, formerly believed to be part of regional thrust faulting, are now interpreted as gravity slide faulting that can be shown to be large in magnitude and not simply local landslides. Large slide faults generally have concealed the great magnitude of mountain-bordering faults. Mineralization that accounts for ore is later than the faulting. Most faults are pre-mineral since they influence the shape of ore bodies, and some clearly have been offset by fault fissures containing ore. Post-mineral movement probably has been an important component of some large, initially pre-mineral faults. A single period of mineralization was begun by the introduction of large quantities of ironmanganese carbonate, and, in places, carbonate manganese with minor values in sulfides. Closely following the carbonate invasion, massive sulfides were brought in, usually replacing part of the carbonate body though in some places the massive sulfides replaced limestone that was not previously mineralized. Manganese mineralization is not a "halo" but leaks of manganese to higher formations and to the surface are the most significant exploration guides. The Pioche district is expected to be long lived with technological developments in ore treatment being important to the exploitation of low-grade manganiferous ores, while aggressive exploration is expected to find important quantities of bedded lead-silver-zinc ores of the massive sulfide type.

Henry Louis, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England (communication to the Secretary): I think very highly of the novel and ingenious device of Prof. Richards for analyzing the movement of the various elements of the jig; it is a method that certainly seems to promise valuable results, if we could only make certain that these various indicator-appliances have no effect upon the action of the jig. I would like, however, to suggest that in future experiments the connection between the plunger indicator-rod and the pencil should be made by means of parallel motions, so as better to reproduce the rectilinear motion of the piston. MUCH of White Pine&apos;s success is due to the mechanization of mining operations and the development of an efficient beneficiation process to extract usable copper from the low-grade ore (averaging slightly more than 1 pct copper content). When the mine was first opened, all ore was trucked to a conveyor system installed in the slope leading out of the mine. But as new mining areas have been opened up at increasing distances from the slope, conveyors have replaced the trucks for much of the haulage. This conveyor program is expected to continue as mining progresses. Here is how the present underground system functions: Run-of-mine ore is dumped into two truck hoppers and withdrawn from the bottom of each hopper by a 60-in. apron feeder 22 ft long (see diagram). Collecting conveyors 54 in. wide and 44 ft long receive the material from the apron feeders and discharge to two main-line 54-in. conveyors, one 2000 ft and the other 2600 ft long. Operating at 312 fpm and handling 1200 tph, the main-line conveyors converge near the bottom of the tunnel leading out of the mine and discharge into two 72x168-in. Vibrex screens. Ore under 8 in. goes directly to the bin beneath. The oversize is fed to two 32x40-in. jaw crushers and after crushing joins the 8-in. material in the bin.

INTRODUCTION In April 1988 discussions were about to start with BP on the possibility of buying their- mineral interests, and it took a long time to arrange a deal. I will talk about RTZ without BP Minerals, look at the new RTZ with BP Minerals, discuss the outlook for metal prices, and review the problems in South Africa and develop the case against sanctions on that country. RTZAT THE END OF 1988 Late in 1987, after completing a worldwide review of our strategic thrust, we decided: 1. That the business focus would be to remain a major diversified natural resource group with interests in related industries. 2. To divest non-core and low growth businesses. 3. To develop a logical acquisition plan. 4. To emphasise organic growth and, most importantly, to enhance shareholders&apos; wealth by capital increase and a progressive dividend policy. Subsequently, we concluded that we should sell our oil and gas business and dispose of several assets for which we saw little growth potential. The disposal programme raised some U.S.$ 1,600 million, representing a significant capital gain on our various investments. All transactions were carried out by our small Head Office staff in London, without the help of merchant banks and lawyers, and we were able to safeguard the employment of our staff in all these operations. The most interesting disposal was of our oil and gas interests. Before the 1987 strategic review, we had ambitions to develop our oil and gas interests and to become the leader in the second division of European oil companies. Our interests, which were purely in exploration and production of oil and gas, consisted of the 100% owned RTZ Oil and Gas company, and 29% of LASMO, a publicly quoted U.K. oil and gas company with extensive worldwide interests. LASMO, in turn, owned 25% of Enterprise Oil, one of the more successful of the North Sea oil exploration and production companies. Prior to the end of 1987, our intention was to acquire control of both LASMO and Enterprise. However, when we evaluated the net asset value of these two companies based on our oil price assumptions, which were pessimistic for the next five years or so, we concluded that they were both trading in the market at significant premiums. This, taken with the additional premium required for acquisition and the high cost of exploration, led us to conclude that, since funds could undoubtedly be used to better effect, we should sell our interests. Turning to the other major achievements in 1988, we commissioned, and built up to design levels in a very short period of time, the Morro do Ouro gold mine in Brazil. This mine reached its design output of 100,000 ounces of gold per year within three months of start-up, which was on time and under budget. We are now considering a possible expansion of this property. In South America, Utah International, Mitsubishi and RTZ arranged non-recourse finance, with post completion guarantees, for the giant Escondida Project in Northern Chile. Financing came from a group of banks in Japan, Germany and Finland -- the countries to which most of the concentrates will be sold -- and from the LEC. The average output of the mine for the

A Discussion of the paper by H. O. Hofman and M. G. Magnuson, read at the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904. (British Columbia Meeting, July, 1905.) T. KIRKE ROSE, London, Eng. (communication to the Secretary*`) :-The authors have shown that, under certain conditions, the rate of dissolution of gold by chlorine and bromine is re¬duced by the addition of 10 per cent. of silver to the gold, and that the action is almost stopped when the silver amounts to 30 or 40 per cent. of the alloy. Even if full recognition is given to the practical way in which the work was done, how¬ever, it is to be regretted that Prof. Hofman and Mr. Magnuson did not determine the temperature at which the experiments were carried out. From the details given it may be inferred that the temperature was raised by chemical action by about 20° C. when 21 g. of sulphuric acid were added, and that the mixture was then slowly cooled down during the experiment. When bromine or very weak chlorine solutions were used, there could not have been any perceptible heating action. As the action of both chlorine and bromine is aided by heat, it follows that the stronger solutions of chlorine were given an unfair advantage over the weaker solutions and over bromine. If the temperature had been the same in each case, I do not think that the conclusions given oil p. 432 of the Bi-Monthly Bulletin, March, 1905, 1 would have been found to be justified. (This is speaking generally. In barrel-treatment the conditions are similar to those in the experiments.) The superior speed of bromine as compared with chlorine at equivalent strengths is not yet disproved, and the differences noted between strong and weak solutions of chlorine may have been largely a function of the temperature. The role of government in encouraging nonmetallics exports ranges from the ownership of an integrated mining company to partial or selective government ownership, to the sponsorship of exporter organizations. In certain cases, regional governments have a direct stake in the industrial minerals industry. This paper assesses the commercial impact of these involvements.
