THE electrodeposition of iron has been practiced for many years. The earlier work along this line was directed toward the preparation of pure metal, but later applications were the production of thin adherent coatings as used in the electrotyping of Russian banknotes in 1860. A historical discussion of this subject, however, would require too much space and would be inconclusive. Much has been written on the subject but no two experimenters use the same methods or materials. During the war, the British army repair, shops developed a method for building up worn parts of automotive machinery, aero engines, etc., using the cold surfate . bath and low-current density method.1 The method has been used successfully in commercial work for the production of about 6000 repaired parts, therefore experiments along the same lines have since been made at the Westinghouse research laboratory. The apparatus used was essentially that described in the article mentioned except that the current -used for cleaning was obtained from a 3/4-kw. 60-volt, house-lighting generator, direct connected to a 2-h.p., 870-r.p.m., 440-volt, three-phase, type CS induction motor; while the plating current was taken from the storage batteries at any desired voltage. The anodes were made from 0.036 in. (0.9 mm.) Armco iron made into cylinders 5 in. (127 mm.) long by 8 in. (203 mm.) in diameter with a disk of 1/8 -in. (3.17 mm.) micarta, having a 2 in. hole in the center fitted at each end of the cylinder for stirring. The anodes were hung on a wooden rocker frame driven by a wooden connecting I rod directly connected to a small reducing gear, such as is sold by most of the apparatus supply firms; 3 gal. stoneware crocks were used as containers. The solution used by Thomas, 75 gm. of the crystallized ferrous ammonium sulfate per liter, was tried, using the current density recommended by him; namely, 0.33 amp. per sq. dm. IN an ingot of germanium solidified progressively from the bottom by a method' devised by J. H. Scaff and H. C. Theuerer, examination discloses ex- IH. C. Torrey and C. A. A slice taken about midway in a cylindrical ingot approximately 3/4 in. in diameter and 1 1/2 in. in length, after etching and polishing to delineate different orientations, is shown in fig. la. The orientations of the regions designated with letters were determined by Laue X-ray back-reflection methods and plotted on stereograms. The orientation relationships of the designated components were determined by comparing the values for the nine angles between the three respective cube poles of each orientation with the values calculated in a formal treatment of octahedral multiple twinning in cubic crystals. Germanium, diamond cubic in structure, has the octahedral twinning habit. I am indebted to K. H. Storks for the calculation of the angular relationships of cube poles in octahedral twinning to four orders. The set of values for the nine angles is distinctive of the order of twinning. Confirmation for a multiple twin relationship is obtained from the determined indices of the mirror planes. These exist for all orders of twinning through the third and for some of the fourth." If the orientations are not those for twinning, then the nine angles for the cube poles do not correspond in value and distribution to those formally calculated. Since all nine angles must correspond in values and distribution of values to the calculated ones, the Laue method with a precision of one or two degrees is adequate to establish or deny with confidence the existence of multiple twins. Regions of the same orientation can also frequently be identified by the optical reflections. For example, the narrow twin bands in A at 2: 00 o'clock have orientation B1. The interesting twin relationships shown schematically in fig. lb were found for the section in fig. la. Most of this slice was made up of orientation, A, appearing in widely separated regions. Of the four possible first order twins of A, three were present in this slice and are designated by B with subscripts. Four second order twins of A are designated by C with subscripts. It is worth emphasizing that two of these, C, and C,, are second orders of A through the first order missing in this section. Two regions, designated by D with subscripts are third order twins of A. D2 is a sixth order twin of D,. All orientations found were ascribable to multiple twinning, as if the orientations in this section originated earlier in solidification from a single nucleus. The presence of extensive multiple twinning to- gether with the absence of other orientations appears to be a characteristic result in many instances of solidification of germanium. Fertile conditions for twinning probably exist in the array of atoms in the diamond cubic structure. The high order twins in the section shown, it is reasonable to presume, are the result of progressive octahedral twinning through several generations in the material freezing earlier. Some of these generations do not appear in this section, it is suggested, because their orientations with respect to the growth direction were unfavorable for survival. The extensive twinning is probably promoted during solidification by constraint imposed by volume increase, and to an irregular growth front. Twinning may also be due, in part, to the attempt of the solidifying region to attain the orientation most favorable to the growth direction (maximum thermal gradient). The nucleus for a twinned orientation could have its origin in a "stacking fault" on the close-packed octahedral plane. Further work is being done in which the course of twinning throughout an ingot is being studied. The results appear to be important in the general theory of solidification.

THE wall-building properties of salt-water drilling muds can be improved markedly by the addition of: (I) natural gums, such as tragacanth, karaya, and ghatti; (2) seaweeds, such as Irish moss; or (3) gelatinized starch. Results of laboratory tests have been confirmed by field trials. For drilling operations in which the mud becomes contaminated by salt, either through penetrating salt-bearing rocks or by addition of sea water to the mud, the added cost resulting from the use of one of the substances listed above is more than offset by freedom from stuck drill pipe and ease in running casing. INTRODUCTION It has been recognized for many years that oil production might be seriously hampered by infiltration of water from the drilling mud.1-4 As knowledge of the mechanism of the wall-building process advanced, methods were developed for evaluating the filtration characteristics of muds.5-11 The wall-building properties of fresh-water muds are commonly regulated by the addition of bentonitic clays, or of agents to promote the dispersion of the natural mud solids. When strata bearing soluble salts are encountered in the course of drilling, the salts are incorporated in the mud; the clay solids are flocculated and water loss is increased tremendously. Methods generally used in controlling filtration of fresh-water muds are no longer applicable. The problem of reducing water loss from salt-water muds is not confined to any particular area, but is acute in parts of West Texas. Salt beds several hundred feet thick must be penetrated before the oil-bearing formation is reached. Since the formation drilled does not provide mud-making material, it is necessary to use large quantities of commercial clays, and even the best commercial clay does not afford relief from the problem of high filtration. A laboratory study has been made of methods of improving the filtration characteristics of salt-water muds, and some of the methods have been used in field practice. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS Procedure Inasmuch as the immediate object of the investigation was the development of means of improving the wall-building properties of muds used in West Texas, an attempt was made to employ muds in the laboratory study comparable to those in field use. Samples of muds used in drilling the producing formations in six wells were secured. The properties of these samples are summarized in Table I, which lists the densities, viscosities, filtrations, and analyses of the filtrates for calcium, chloride, and sulphate. Viscosity was measured in the Stormer viscosimeter at 600 r.p.m. Water loss was determined at 80°F. with the Baroid low-pressure wall-building tester' at a pressure of 10o lb. per sq. in. Filtration rates are considerably higher than those of usual fresh-water muds, which amount to about 20 c.c. in 30 min. Water loss was so rapid in samples 4, 5 and 6 that filtration was complete in less than 10 min. and the values for 30 min. were extrapolated from the rates at shorter

Ball wear in wet grinding mills has been the subject of considerable discussion in the last few years. Its importance to millmen is obvious in view of the fact that ball wear may cost from 2 to 4 per ton of ore for the more fortunate operators and many times this cost when a refractory ore must be reduced to a fine state of comminution. Consequently, any factual information that may be obtained on the nature of ball wear may be applied to introduce changes leading to lower ball consumption and therefore also to lower costs. In 1940, while employed with the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co., Britannia Beach, B.C., I had occasion to investigate factors that might affect ball consumption. We performed a number of tests, which will be briefly described. These tests originated as a result of changing from a 3½-in. ball to a 2-in. ball of different type of manufacture and were motivated by the desire to obtain the best possible type of 2-in. ball. Our testing was helped by the fact that the company operated a one-ton electric furnace, so that it was quite easy to make steel changes. It should be emphasized at the beginning that these tests produced results that in their general application to milling should be interpreted qualitatively rather than quantitatively. As will be evident in the description of the method used in testing, the balls were subjected to an intermittent batch grinding treatment, which may have produced results in rate of steel wear that may not have an accurate correlation with steel consumption in full scale mill operation. However, with this bed and rather arbitrary method of testing, results were obtained that may be of some interest and may stimulate further work on this subject. Unfortunately, owing to pressure of war work, our tests, which we had intended to repeat on a continuous grinding operation, had to be discontinued. Method of Testing Tests Were made in a Small cylindrical mill, rotating at 72 r.P.m. Internal dimensions of the mill were 10½-in. dia. by 9 in. The cylindrical inner surface was lined with rubber and the two ends were formed by steel plates. A charge of 2000 grams dry feed and 2000 C.C. of water was added evev 2 hr., the mill being drained of pulp before the addition of each charge, by tilting and sluicing with water. The mill was run On afternoon and night shift for daily periods of about 15 hr. total grinding time, and each test lasted from 60 to 150 hr. This batch method of testing involved a higher average pulp temperature in the mill, which undoubtedly affected comparative results in Some of the tests. Synthetic polycrystals of wustite were reduced ilz H2-H2O mixtures over limited roncentration ranges wiltun the wustite. field and the weight changes were continuously followed with a McBain quartz spiral balance. The reduction was. found to be controlled by a combined surface plus solid-state diffusion reaction. The solid-state diffusion had an activation energy of 38 kcal. Self--diflusioities of iron decreased with itzcreasing vacancy concentration. The activation energy of. the surface reaction runs different tor- different samples. The surface reaction-rate constan increased with increasirzg vacancy concentration. THE reduction of the oxides of iron has been studied for many years. Edstroem' has summarized the early work and has provided much information on the reduction of magnetite and hematite by hydrogen and carbon monoxide. More recent summaries are those by smeltzer2 and Themelis and Gauvin.3 Most investigators have reported that the iron metal which forms the outer layer during gaseous reduction is rather porous. According to Kohl and Engel14 the formation of such a porous iron layer depends on the properties of the underlying wiistite layer, on the reaction of the gas with the wustite surface, and on the transport of matter through the wustite layer. McKewan, Quets, Wadsworth, and Lewis, and Knacke 10 have found that, if a porous iron layer is formed, a surface reaction between gas and wustite at the bottom of the pores controls the rate of reaction. Seth and ROSS 11 and Warner 12 have pointed out that the influence of the gaseous pore diffusion through the porous iron layer cannot be neglected. It has further been shown that the wiistite layer formed during reduction is dense and that transport of matter across the layer occurs only by solid-state diffusion of iron ions.13,14 The solid-state diffusion rates observed by Edstroem and Bitsianis 14 and the surface reaction rates observed by Quets eta1.' show that an interaction of the two steps in controlling the reaction rate has to be considered. In this investigation the reduction of wustite was studied with respect to the interaction of the two steps, isolated from any other effects, by reducing wustite within the wustite field from higher to lower oxygen concentrations with H2-H2O gas mixtures. A similar study with CO-CO2 mixtures has been performed by Levin and wagner.15 Fused synthetic wustite polycrystals were reduced in steps of 0.4 wt pct from 24.4 to 23.2 wt pct 0 and over a temperature range from 700" to 1050°C. A few tests were also conducted with reduction steps from 24.4 to 23.6 wt pct 0 and 24.5 to 23.2 wtpct0. The Fe-O phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1 where the composition of the gas phase in equilibrium with the condensed phases is plotted as pct H2 vs the temperature. A careful study of the literature led to the conclusion that the fully drawn equicomposition curves (in wt pct O) in the wustite field used by Edstroem 1,16 and other authors needed some correction. Based on results by Darken and Gurry17 (shown as open circles) and on some of our own data, four corrected curves for 23.2, 23.6, 24.0, and 24.4 wt pct O were calculated (drawn as dashed lines in Fig. 1) which should replace the fully drawn equicomposition curves. MATERIALS AND APPARATUS Materials and Specimen Preparation. Wustite was prepared from iron sulfate (Fisher Scientific Co., New York) which had a purity of over 99.92 pct, with small amounts of manganese, copper, and zinc adding up to 0.03 pct. From the aqueous solution iron oxalate was precipitated and decomposed to magnetite according to Economos. 18 The magnetite powder was pressed into cylinders and sintered in vacuum at 900°C for several hours. The sintered compacts were placed in a platinum crucible of 2.5 cm diam which was fitted into a high-purity alumina crucible and then inserted into the center of the graphite heating element of an electric resistance furnace.lg The furnace was evacuated to below 1 p Hg and the magnetite sample was slowly heated. Single stage autogenous grinding of run-of-mine ore was selected by Broken Hill South Ltd., parent Company of Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd. for the concentrator to treat 60,000 tons per four weekly period of copper and complex copper-lead-zinc sulphide ores from the C.S.A. Mine at Cobar, Australia. Ore is mined by mechanised horizontal cut-and-fill stoping and is prepared for grinding by crushing under- ground in a 60 in. x 48 in. jaw-crusher set at 5 in. closed side setting. The ore is reduced to 80% minus 76 microns in two parallel sections each of one 22 ft. dim. x 7 ft. long autogenous grinding mill, powered by a 1,250 H.P. motor, operating in closed circuit with a single stage 20 in. dim. cyclone. Broken Hill South's original concept of the concentrator required the maximum use of reliable instrumentation, centralised control, and the minimum of manning. To achieve this objective the control room, housing the process recorders, alarms, closed circuit television monitors and all the control equipment, overlooks the grinding and flotation sections, and the whole plant is serviced by a public address system. The grinding units and associated equipment are located in the open and are serviced with the aid of a mobile crane and a mobile hydraulically-operated liner lifting device.

THE nature of the carbides that form during the tempering of martensite is a subject of continuing controversy. The only direct methods of identification available are X-ray and electron diffraction. These methods are subject to several difficulties. Only a relatively few diffraction lines of appreciable intensity emanate from carbide phases that are formed at low tempering temperatures. Furthermore, some overlapping of carbide and matrix lines occurs. There is also the problem that numerous lines in the patterns of possible carbide phases that may be present have about the same d-spacings. Increasing the number of carbide lines and eliminating the matrix lines can be accomplished by extraction techniques. However, there is always the possibility that a change in carbide structure will occur as a result of removal from the parent matrix. Therefore, such techniques as electrolytic extraction and making extraction replicas should be checked by other methods. For identifying small amounts of carbide in a tempered martensitic matrix, electron diffraction carried out in reflection is more advantageous than X-ray diffraction. To properly prepare a specimen for reflection electron diffraction, an etchant that will selectively attack the matrix and thereby cause the carbide particles to stand in relief should be used. A choosy in what they would smelt. The furnace charge had to be coarse, and it had to be rich. They discarded fines in excess of about 1/10 the total weight. They wanted 10% copper content and fussed about anything with as low as 5%. They concentrated the copper content of the charge as much as they could by prior selection. They roasted off enough sulfur to further enrich the copper content of the succeeding fall of matte (a melt of cuprous and ferrous sulfides or Cu2S.FeS). Then they desulfurized the iron and fluxed it by carefully adding silica (quartz, not silicates) for a slag of lower density than the cuprous sulfide (Cu2S or white metal). After skimming off the slag, they further desulfurized the white metal by blowing the molten bath with compressed air. The result was blister copper. Yesterday Their techniques and furnaces? Some experimented with mechanically rabbled roasters, but their standard roasting practice was burning coarse sulfide ore in 250-ton heaps. These heaps, approximately 24 x 24 x 6 ft, were burned for about 75 days down to 6-10% sulfur. The turnaround time for a given roasting position was 100 days. Assuming the base was a hearth, the calculated rate of treatment was on the order of 0.004 tpd per sq ft.

NUMEROUS references have been made recently to "Alaska's oil reserves," and in view of the wartime petroleum situation sober thinking demands a dispassionate and scientific study and investigation of these reserves or supposed reserves. The question naturally arises, "Is there actually oil in Alaska, or are the reserves there a supposition?" True, in 1923 President Harding established Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 in Alaska, certainly implying that oil was there. This reserve, embracing about 35,000 sq. mi., was set aside on the advice of the Bureau of Engineering of the Navy Department and was based upon the existence of known petroleum seepages at Cape Simpson on the Arctic coast. The Cape Simpson seepages have been known for more than fifty years, but in spite of persistent rumors of other seepages in northern Alaska no definite evidence of their existence has been available.

Several aspects of the calcination of Michigan limestone were investigated: the rate of calcination of limestone spheres with diameters from 1.8 to 14 cm at temperatures from 800° to 1200°C by a thermogravimetric method; the temperature profile across limestone during calcination; the excess pressure developed in the interior of the stone during calcination; the pore surface area, pore volume, and effective gas diffusivity in burnt lime; and the microstructure of polished and fracture surfaces. It is found that, over a wide range of experimental conditions, the difference between the surface and center temperatures remains essentially unchanged during the latter half of calcination. From the rate of weight loss after about 50% calcination, the value 0.00126 cal per cm sec degree is found for the effective thermal conductivity of burnt lime. From the excess internal pressure measurements, i.e., 0.4 to 6 cm Hg at 800° to 1200°C, the permeability of burnt lime is estimated to be within the range 8 X 10-' to 5 X 10' sq cm. With increasing temperature and time of calcination, the pore structure of burnt lime coarsens as indicated by a decrease in the pore surface area, pore volume, and an increase in the average pore size. For the temperature range 600° to 835°C the ratio (effective gas diffusivity/molecular diffusivity) is about 0.18.

THE reduction of tungstic oxide to tungsten metal powder by hydrogen is a process by which one might expect the resultant metal powder to be porous. In- [ ] deed, sponge iron, prepared by reduction of the oxide in a reducing gas, is generally accepted as quite porous, with pores large enough to be seen readily under the optical microscope at relatively low magnifications. However, any pores that may exist in tungsten metal powder are not resolved by the optical microscope, and apparently, not even by the electron microscope. Fig I shows commercial tungsten powder magnified at 10,000X by the electron microscope,1 both etched and unetched. In an earlier paper by one of the authors,2 the existence of pores in tungsten powder [ ] was required to explain adequately the particle size changes occurring during the reduction of tungstic oxide. The inability to detect these pores under the electron microscope at 10,000 X implies that these pores are of a size of 100 A units or less. (This in itself is by no means proof that pores above 100 A would not exist, since polishing effects on the specimen might smear up holes of such small magnitude). If, then, these pores are less than 100 A, and of the order of molecular size, then the density of the metal powder should be

The symposium on mine safety held in connection with the annual meeting of the Institute three years ago, it. was pointed out that "at present no convenient, reliable, accurate means for determining the gas content of mine air is available, for use by the ordinary mine man." In a letter addressed to Coal Age and published on Feb. 25, 1925, Thomas T. Read, then Director of the Safety Service of the Bureau of Mines, stated: "It is to be hoped that sometime in the near future some-one will invent a reliable methane indicator that is con-venient to, use and will permit the keeping of all flames of every character out of bituminous mines, through doing away with the safety lamp." The Martienssen methane detector, which has re-cently received the official approval of the Bureau of Mines, is intended to. meet the demand for such an in-strument as expressed at that meeting and on many other occasions. The characteristics which qualify it for the task are the following: (1) simplicity; (2) small bulk and light weight; (3) ruggedness; (4) accuracy sufficient for the requirements; (5) safety; and (6) dependability. The principle on which the working of the instrument is based may best be explained by giving a brief out-line of the various stages of development through which the inventor, Professor Martienssen of the University of Kiel, Germany, advanced to the final solution of the problem which he had undertaken to solve.

THE presence of gas in coal mines necessitates the use of costly ventila-tion arrangements and the use of expensive mining methods. On the other hand, the gas itself in many instances is of considerable intrinsic value, and its separate recovery might conceivably be a profitable under-taking. This paper is concerned with a study of the movement of gas in coal strata with the object of determining the laws governing gas move-ment and thus making at least a preliminary step toward the solution of the more practical problem of its control or recovery. Naturally, so important a subject has received much attention from scientists and engineers. In most cases, however, the studies have been concerned with the origin1?, the amount2, the composition3 and the method of retention4 of the gas in coal; or, from the more practical side, have been concerned with the phenomena and conditions associated with outbursts5 or explosions and their control. Numerous studies also have been made of the permeability of coal to gas6, of gas pressures measured in coal seams, etc. The authors are unaware, however, of any attempt to present a consistent or complete picture of the laws governing the movement of gas through the coal.

Here the span of years is relatively short and the records have been kept with some degree of precision. In the current scene of our social and economic drama the art and science of metallurgy is playing a major role. Off stage will be found the metallurgist in one guise or another aiding, he trusts, in the development of processes and products which will contribute to the happiness of his fellow men. The results of his efforts appear in the form of metallic substances known as alloys built up from any two or more of the wide variety of metals which have been extracted from the mineral deposits in the earth's crust. An alloy by virtue of its inherent physical properties may seem ideally suited for human use in a special way but until this material can be produced economically it will fail to attain a place of prominence as an article of commerce. In fact many commercial alloys are being continually replaced by new or modified compositions better suited to meet the increasingly severe demands of industrial service.

THE great development of the mines and metallurgical works of this country during the last few years, accompanied as it has been by the investment of enormous sums of money in purchasing lands, and in the erection of improvements, requires that advantage should be taken of the accumulated knowledge of engineers, superintendents, and' others, in mastering &he problems which are constantly presenting themselves for our action. Among those may be mentioned the consideration of more economical systems of mining in our coal and metal-liferous mines, improved methods of transportation above and below ground, unwatering and ventilating mines, the mechanical preparation of coal and other minerals, the various metallurgical processes, and, in fact, every question tending to the attainment of two great objects : 1st. The more economical production of the useful minerals and metals. 2d. The greater safety and welfare of those employed in these industries. In European countries, where the arts of mining and metallurgy have long been the subject of the most careful study, no means have been found so effectual in attaining the end above proposed as the free interchange of experience among those actually engaged in these industries, and this object has been accomplished, mainly, through the medium of institutes, associations or societies, composed of those engaged in these occupations, and by the periodical publication of essays or papers, communicated to such societies by their members. I t must be evident to all practical men that the interchange of the varied experience of those engaged in such occupation in this country could not fail to advance very materially the desired objects; it is, therefore, proposed to establish an American Institute of Mining Engineers, which will hold its meetings periodically in the great mining and metallurgical centers, where works of interest, such as mines, machine shops, furnaces, and other metallurgical works, can be inspected, and the members exchange their views, and consult for mutual advantage upon the difficulties encountered by each; these transactions or proceedings, when published, would form a most valuable and greatly-needed addition to our professional literature. I t is proposed that a meeting of those sympathizing with the object above mentioned shall be called for the purpose of organizing such an association, the place and time of meeting being Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and the month of April or May. Communications indicating the opinion and wishes of all, both as to these points, and also as to the organization and objects of the Institute, will be gladly received by any of the undersigned, and a notice of the date of meeting, which will be arranged to suit the greater number, will be duly communicated. IN the course of small seale experiments on the electrodeposition, of copper, extremely brittle deposits were obtained from electrolytes prepared by leaching calcined chalcopyrite with aqueous sulfuric acid. It was not possible to strip the metal without fracture after it had been deposited from such electrolytes onto smooth oiled copper sheets, the usual plant procedure for the production of so-called starting sheets. The embrittlement did not occur with electrolytes made either by leaching the calcine with water or by treating an acid leachate to remove iron as hydrous ferric oxide. The electrolytes which produced brittle deposits were found to contain molybdenum in concentrations of 10 to 25 mg per 1, whereas those which produced ductile deposits contained <0.5 mg per 1. Synthetic electrolytes having the composition: Cu", 40 gpl; Fe", 0.5 to 1.0 gpl; Fe3+, 0.5 to 1.0 gpl; and H,SO,, 10 to 50 gpl, were prepared from reagent-grade salts; by adding ammonium molybdate, the embrittling effect of the higher concentrations of molybdenum (VI) was strikingly confirmed. The brittle deposits contained up to 0.03 pct Mo. The importance of oxidation state of the molybdenum was demonstrated when the electrolyte containing it was circulated continuously through a bed of fine copper metal during deposi- tion. Under these reducing conditions, the cathode deposit was ductile and molybdenum could not be detected. Molybdenum has not been recognized as one of the metals causing embrittlement of copper nor is it listed among the usual impurities. In most elec-trowinning plants there is a purification step which removes iron from the leachate before electrolysis. In these cases molybdenum would be coprecipitated with hydrous ferric oxide. In the case of the large leaching plant at Chuquicamata, Chile, where the leachate is reported to contain considerable molybdenum, it would be reduced to a lower oxidation state during removal of chlorine by means of cement copper. This may explain why the embrittling effect of molybdenum has not been reported previously. Moreover, in copper refining plants where soluble anodes have been prepared by a high temperature smelting process, it is most unlikely that any molybdenum would remain with the copper, whereas the calcines in this work were prepared in a fluidized bed reactor at a temperature not exceeding 720°C.
