The iron-nail method of assaying has been used for a number of years, but has not met with the approval of all assayers. The method possesses advantages which may be given as follows: (1) no preliminary treatment is required; (2) a lead button of proper size can be obtained; (3) it is economical. On the other hand, it has its disadvantages, which may be summed up as follows: (1) it is not applicable to ores containing large amounts of impurities other than sulphur, as practically all the base metals will contaminate the lead button ; (2) the slag is unsatisfactory in the larger number of fusions; (3) the method was known to give low silver results under certain conditions and the gold results were questionable. It was with the idea of determining the extent of this latter disadvantage that the following investigation was undertaken. It is well known that the fusion obtained in the lead assay is far more satisfactory than that in the " nails method" for gold and silver. The principal difference in the charges as a class is the presence of considerable reducing agent in the lead charge, and a limited oxidizing action in the nails charge, dud to PbO. The possibility of improving the nails fusion by simulating the lead charge was the reason for using argol in some tests, even though there were reasons for expecting this would have an objectionable effect on the results. Definite transition behavior was found in unalloyed titanium at 0.13 pct 0 equivalent. The addition of 0.5 Sn, 1.0 Al, 0.5 Al, and 1.0 Sn lowers the tvansition temperature of titanium at oxygen equivalents exceeding 0.22, 0.29, 0.40, and 0.51, respectively. Metallographic evidence indicates that progressive amounts of oxygen restrict deformation at low temperatures resulting eventually in brittle fracture. The presence of tin or aluminum is thought to alter the atomic distribution of oxygen within the titanium lattice in such a manner as to facilitate some degree of slip and twinning. 1 ITANIUM-like iron and zinc experiences a transition from ductile to brittle fracture with decreasing temperature. The presence of sufficient quantities of the interstitial elements, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen in solid solution, has been shown to progressively lower the room-temperature impact resistance of titanium with increasing interstitial content.1"1 Ogden,et al,2 reported finding no transition from ductile to brittle fracture with decreasing temperature in iodide titanium. However, a definite transition was found to occur at 0.36 pct 0 equivalent in an alloy containing 0.47 pct carbon in solid solution. The oxygen equivalent in this case was obtained by assuming the effects of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen in combination on the impact properties of titanium to be additive on the same basis as their separate effects on tensile strength, namely: Oe = 2/3 (pct C) + pet 0 + 2 (pet N) They concluded that the tendency toward transition behavior is dependent on the total interstitial content in solid solution and not on any one particular interstitial element. Rennhack,4 however, recently found transition behavior in iodide titanium at an oxygen equivalent of 0.17 pct. Ogden, etal3, reported that the strengthening effects of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen in titanium decrease with the addition of tin. They showed that tin additions increase the tolerance of titanium for the interstitials, that is, 10 pct Sn permitted individual additions of up to 0.4 wt pct of the interstitial elements without any significant loss in ductility. Aluminum tends to decrease ductility and impact strength of titanium for a given interstitial ~ontent.3 Van Thyne and Kessler5 found that the solid solubility of carbon in titanium doubled in the presence of 10 pct Al. The precise effects of tin and aluminum in the nrespncp of rorvfen nn the impact properties of titanium had previously not been determined. The high oxygen tolerance of titanium containing tin may provide a suitable means for improving the impact properties of titanium containing the interstitial elements, particularly oxygen. Unlike tin, however, aluminum has a high affinity for oxygen and will reduce rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2)by a thermit-type reaction.6 Thus, the atomic distribution of oxygen in titanium might be different in the presence of aluminum. The present work was undertaken to: 1) Determine the effect of oxygen on the transition behavior of unalloyed iodide titanium. 2) Determine the effect of small amounts of tin and aluminum on the transition behavior of iodide titanium in the presence of oxygen and other interstitial~. EXPERIMENTAL Three different lots of iodide titanium were employed to prepare the alloys studied in the present work. Their chemical composition is presented in Table I. The compositions of the tin and aluminum used for alloying are shown in Table 11. Oxygen additions were made using calcined rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2)of 99.7 pct purity. Metallurgists have looked at fractures macroscopically for many years and have evolved a vocabulary in which such words as "cleavage," "brittle," "shear," "ductile," "granular," "fibrous," and "silky" are used to describe the appearance of the fractured surface; but the meaning of these words in terms of metal structure is not well established. Observations of the structural meaning of "brittle" and "ductile" fractures in plate steels have been made, notably, by Kramer and coworkers1 and by Tipper.2 Grossman3 has studied the fracture of tempered martensite and combinations of ferrite and martensite. Notwithstanding these and other less concerted attacks on the problem, present understanding of fracture rests more on assumptions and logic than on experiment. It is the purpose of this paper to add a little to the growing fund of experimental observations of the nature of fractures in steel. The particular fractures to be described were obtained in conventional impact testing of an ordinary structural steel shape. In impact tests of the Charpy type, the specimens fail in a characteristic manner that depends on the steel and the temperature of testing. With ordinary structural and many other steel products, an appropriate range of testing temperature will cause a considerable change in the energy absorbed before fracture. This change is known as the energy transition and is accompanied, more or less closely, by alteration in the appearance of the fracture. At testing temperatures below the transition, the terms "brittle," "cleavage," or "granular" are used to describe the fracture; above it, "ductile" or "shear" are often used. Within the transition, the fracture changes from "brittle" to "ductile" by a progression in appearance, wherein the "brittle" portion of the fracture becomes restricted to a smaller and smaller central area of the fracture, as the testing temperature is raised and the "ductile" type of fracture is approached. All this is well known to metallurgists. The specimens under consideration are of the conventional V-notch Charpy type. They were taken from a structural steel shape of the following analysis: C Mn P S Si 0.17 0.46 0.009 0.029 0.03 Both longitudinal and transverse specimens were tested and examined. Fig 1 shows the energy values plotted against testing temperatures in the usual way. The curves for both longitudinal and transverse specimens show an energy transition, although the maximum energy absorbed at testing temperatures above the transition is greater in the case of the longitudinal specimens. Fig 2 illustrates the changes in the macroscopic appearance of the fractures that are associated with the energy transitions shown in Fig 1. Macrographs of the fractured surfaces of the specimens have been identified with the fracture ratings at intervals on each fracture curve. The numerical fracture rating on the ordinate of Fig 2 indicates the percentage of the area of each fracture that was considered to be "brittle" on macroscopic observation. Such rating of the fracture type in impact tests is now customary in many laboratories. Hereafter the specimens will be identified by reference to Fig 2 as 90 pct "brittle," 80 pct "brittle," and so on, in accordance with this macroscopic evaluation of the appearance of the fractured surface. The discussion of the fractures is divided into three parts. The first two are concerned with the mode of fracture and its relation to general structural features. THE Magma mine, of the Magma Copper Co., at Superior, Pinal County, Arizona, is 68 miles east of Phoenix and 21 miles west of Miami, Arizona, on highway U. S. 180. TEMPERATURES AND UNDERGROUND WATERS Surface Temperatures.-The average surface dry-bulb temperature at Superior is 72.4°; wet-bulb, 57.4°; with an indicated relative humidity of 38 per cent. The average yearly rainfall from 1921 to 1936, inclusive, was 18.74 in. The maximum condition of the atmosphere is in June, July and August, and the minimum is in January and February. The surface temperatures, of course, influence the temperatures of the down-cast shafts; however, the variation between winter and summer causes a difference of only 2° to 3° in the stopes and working places that are not close to the intake shafts. Average atmospheric conditions are shown in Fig. 1. Water encountered is always the same temperature as the rock from which it flows, and for this reason it is thought that the water is heated by the rock; not the rock by the water. The country rock apparently has been heated by the various intrusions, perhaps the vein itself, and has not yet had time to cool off. The geothermal gradient (Fig. 2) as indicated by the rock tem-peratures given above is 1 1/2 ° per 100 feet.

INTRODUCTION From the point of view of the consumer, the cost of mineral commodities might be viewed as the total price industry pays for mine output. Similarly, the mining company engaged in the ongoing business of finding, developing and operating new mines is concerned very much today with the distribution of all the revenue paid for mine output and not just with its direct or controllable cash costs. In other words, what will the labor force, the supplier of energy, explosives, and reagents, and the supplier of government services, management, capital, and the ore reserves receive for their contribution to production? A significant amount might be categorized as what economic theory classifies as economic rent. Mining companies are finding it increasingly difficult to negotiate concession or work contracts to develop ore reserves in lesser developed countries, just as they find themselves accused of taking excess profits in their own countries. The principal difficulty in reaching mutually satisfactory agreements in many cases is the difficulty in establishing an acceptable distribution of income, in particular the distribution of economic rent. (See Chapter 7). Further, it is logical that the decisions and policies of the interested parties be they government or industry should be and will be influenced by their competitive position relative to determining the distribution of economic rent. The raising of finance for a mining project today may be inhibited by too biased an extraction of economic rent by entities other than the risk takers, the mining companies. ECONOMIC RENT A British economist (Ricardo D. McGraw-Hill, 1955) first proposed the concept of economic rent (See Drechsler, H.D. earlier in this Chapter.) Ricardo pointed out that no rent would be paid until land became scarce. Ricardo also stressed the distinction that the price of farm produce was not higher because of the rent paid on farm land but that the rent or price of more fertile farm land was higher because the price of produce is higher. This led to the concept that economic rent is not a cost and that it is therefore not price determining, but is itself price determined. Economic rent may be viewed as a cost if cost is equated with the concept of payment or distribution of income to any factor used in production. However, if it is a criterion that a payment must be made to the supplier of the factor of production, then economic rent is not truly a cost because it is not necessarily distributed or "paid" to the supplier. Consider the commodity A which occurs in three grades: Al, A2, and A3. Any grade may be used as a substitute for another grade in all of the industrial uses of A. However, in industries X and Y the different grades have different productivities. Table 1 shows the relative productivities of each grade in industries X and Y, and in all other industries [~]. [ ]

The Grossschloppen vein-uranium deposit, Bavaria, West Germany, was examined with underground workings during 1980-82 by Esso Erz GmbH, an affiliate of Exxon Minerals Company (EMC). Geologic evaluation entailed dense drilling of a portion of the deposit from workings constructed specifically for the program. Discovered in 1977, the deposit was initially explored by surface diamond drillholes which allowed definition of a 30-60 m wide vein system discontinuously mineralized along a 1000 m strike length and to at least a 450 m depth. The underground program was conceives as a cost-effective procedure to answer quest ions on vein correlation, grade continuity and variability. A 1200 m decline allowed access for detailed sampling of approximately 10% of the known area of mineralization. Fanned drillholes, logged by gamma probe, were spaced to provide intersections of veins at 10 to 20 m intervals. Six cross-cuts also penetrate the pitchblende and uranophane mineralization which occurs in 0.1 to 2.5 m thick quartz veins. Detailed cross-sections and level plans were constructed for resource estimates of the intensively studied portion of the vein system. The program resulted in the discovery of local, high grade areas and an average grade in the evaluated area nearly double that expected from surface drilling.

DISREGARDING for the present the economic side of a new device, let us turn to that feature of the conical pebble-mill which is of interest from a scientific point of view, and consider the device as a puzzle in which the theories of the cylindrical type of mill have been increased. Many articles have been written on the theory of the tube-mill, and explanations have been made which do not explain.; but these have evolved suggestions of practice which have resulted in changes in the tube as to length, diameter, feed, discharge, speed of rotation, rotation on hollow trunnions, rotation on rings, and changes in the operation as to quantity and size of pebbles, charge of load above or below the axis, crushing by causing the larger pieces of the material of the charge to act as grinders, etc. The practical worker in crushing is first interested in the endeavor to reach an economic means of accomplishing a desired end; but the improvements in crushing-practice have been largely left to the manufacturer of machinery, who, as a rule, has little, if any, knowledge of the specific requirements-such as sizing for concentration without pulverizing the metals, instead of pulverizing the rock or gangue; the metals being the more friable, while the rock is tough and not so easily disintegrated. A reversal of this practice is the aim of sliming direct for cyanidation. In the ordinary cylindrical mill, having a diameter of 4 or 5 ft. and a length of from 15 to 27 ft., it has been found that the maximum size of the particles of the charge must not exceed 1 mm. (about 25 mesh), some of which, upon entering the mill, is immediately reduced to a slime. The solubility of aluminum in cryolite melts has been determined by measuring the weight loss of aluminum submerged in melts contained in closed silicon nitride crucibles. The solubility in pure cryolite has also been checked with radioactive isotopes. The solubility decreases with increasing A1203 concentration, decreasing temperature, and decreasing cryolite ratio. The change of aluminum solubility in pure cryolite with the activity controlled by using Al-Ag and A2-Cu alloys supported the assumption that aluminum would dissolve in the form of monovalent ions according to the reaction 2AI + A1' —3 A1'. DURING the electrolytic production of aluminum, the electrodeposited metal redissolves in the bath in some form and is subsequently oxidized back to the former ionic state. This dissolution is believed to cause a decrease in current efficiency. Reported data on the solubility of aluminum in cryolite melts are scattered. The mechanism of the dissolution has not yet been determined, although certain tentative interpretations have been proposed. Many previous studies were performed under different test conditions. Studies were performed in open Systems and closed systems,'o and some were apparently not given sufficient time to Saturate." The solubility can be determined either analytically or gravimetrically. The analytical determination involves measurement of hydrogen gas evolved when frozen cryolite bath saturated with aluminum is treated with sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid. The gravimetric determination, adopted by many investigators,'-37'3>14 involves measurement of weight loss of the metal after equilibration with a known amount of salt. It appears that the former technique yields much smaller values of solubility than the latter technique. This large difference in results strongly suggests that the dissolved metal in the cryolite melt is no longer in the metallic state. In the present study, the solubility was determined by the gravimetric technique at various activities of aluminum using A1-Ag and Al-Cu alloys. An attempt was also made to determine the ionic (or atomic) state of the dissolved metal from the solubility data. 1) EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. Preliminary tests demonstrated that silicon nitride was suitable as a container material since it is compatible to both the fluoride melts and molten aluminum. Crucibles were made from silicon powder nitrided with Nz gas at 1600°C. The good compatibility between crucible and melts is due to the near perfect nitrogenation of silicon. Only small amounts of silicon were found in the aluminum metal after the experiments. The crucible dimensions were 90 mm inside height, 38 mm ID, 105 mm outside height, and 50 mm OD. Close-fitting lids made of silicon nitride were also prepared. The crucible was placed in a close-fitting graphite crucible heated by a vertical Kanthal furnace, Fig. l. The lid and crucible are fastened tightly together by the condensation of vaporized bath in the narrow gap between them. The temperature was measured in the wall of the graphite crucible and controlled within * 5°C. The temperature difference between the measuring point and the interior of the melts was initially determined. Materials. The materials used were: Greenland cryolite (impurities CaF,, 0.5 pct; AlzO3, 0.2 pct; high-purity aluminum metal (purity 99.99 pct); A1203 and AlF, (provided by Nippon Light Metal Co., Ltd); reagent-grade NaF and CaF2; and 99.9+ pct Ag and Cu. Powdered reagents were carefully dried before use. A1-Ag and A1-Cu alloys were prepared before the experiments; their composition was checked by analysis

THE Selective Media Process was developed by the author in a laboratory provided by The Steårns-Roger Manufacturing Co. It is the outcome of an [ ] investigation into the possibilities of coarse beneficiation by sink and float without using the conventional heavy media. Commercial work to date has been limited to the treatment of minus 3/8-in. iron ore at the Hill Trumbull washing plant of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., at Calumet, Minnesota. Two cut away prints of the machine are shown (Figs. I and 2). A rotary conical impeller is mounted within a stationary cone (Fig. 2). This impeller is adjustable vertically by a 12-ton screw jack. The speed of the impeller can be varied from 14 to 32 r.p.m. by the Reeves variable-speed motor pulley mounted on the 7 ½ -hp. motor drive. Attached to the bottom of the stationary cone is the automatic control valve for sink product, actuated by a ¼ -hp. gear motor. The sink product is dewatered in a conventional drag driven by a 7 ½ -hp. motor and discharged onto an inclined conveyor containing from 6 to 10 per cent moisture. Two plants are operated at the Hill Trumbull property. All the ore is first treated in a typical washing plant (Fig. 3). When treating "wash ore" a finished concentrate can be produced by the log washers and Akins classifiers, as the separation involves only fine silica (minus 48-mesh) and free iron. LEAD, silver, and zinc, in quantities of economic importance are found in the Aguilar ore. The lead occurs as galena and the zinc as sphalerite and marmatite. The silver occurrence is more complex. Pyrargyrite and proustite have been identified only occasionally. Galena is silver-bearing and so are the various other sulphides, though to a lesser degree. The principal nonsulphide gangue minerals include calcite, quartz, wollastonite, rhodonite, and various calcium, aluminum, and iron silicates. A typical analysis of, the ore is: Pb, 11.2; Zn, 12.3; Fe, 4.4; Mn, 2.2; Cu, 0.15; S, 11.2; CaO. 7.6; "Insoluble," 50.1 percent; and Ag 263 g per ton. Crushing is done in three stages. The primary crusher at the mine is set to deliver about a 5-in. product. The crushed ore is then transported to the secondary crushing plant by a 3-km cableway where the general practice is to hold the product of the first Symons to about 1 in., and of the second Symons to about 1/2 in. When the ore is soft and rich the product of the first Symons is by-passed directly to the ball-mill bins. Dust control in the secondary crushing plant is effected by enclosing the dust-emanating sources and exhausting the enclosures with a Clarage No. 18 fan driven at 1300 rpm by a 20-hp motor. Use is also made of spray water at one or two critical places. Every effort is made to keep the air free from visible dust. Dust counts taken at the working places show dust concentrations of less than six million particles ner cu ft. The composition

WHILE the literature in the United States on general polarographic technique is extensive, very little appears to be directly applicable to the analysis of flotation tailings. For this reason, it seemed worth while to present a few polarographic methods of ore analysis that have been in constant use in the laboratories of the Hercules Experiment Station for the past few years. At the time of our initial investigation of the polarographic method, there was little or no mention of its specific application to flotation tailings. It was therefore necessary for us to establish suitable conditions for the analysis of our flotation tailings and to consider possible interfering constituents. The polarograph, or dropping mercury electrode, method was discovered in 1925 by J. Heyrovsky and M. Shikata,1 of the Charles University, Prague. This method has since received extensive development and the literature contains many articles on the use of the polarograph for the quantitative determination of metals as well as anions, oxygen in solution, and reducible organic compounds. Kolthoff and Lingane,2 by the publication of their book, "Polarography," in 1941 did much to advance the knowledge and use of the polarograph. In chapter 25 of that book, methods for the polarographic analysis of brass, steel and iron products, alloys, and zinc ore are given. Aluminum,3 cadmium,3.4 cobalt,4 copper,3-9 gold,10 iron,3,11 lead, 3,12,13 molybdenum," nickel,4.8,9 tin,15 and zinc3,4,5,7 in ores have been analyzed by the polarograph. However, most of the work on tailing samples has been published in Russian journals and translations are not yet readily available. In this paper we will describe the method that was developed and used in our laboratory for the determination of copper, zinc, and lead in flotation tailings. PRINCIPLE OF THE METHOD The polarograph is an instrument for applying a potential to a mercury pool and a dropping mercury electrode separated by a solution, and for measuring the resultant electrical current. The procedure is essentially a small-scale electrolysis, in which the voltage required to reduce or oxidize the material identifies it qualitatively and the current measures the concentration quantitatively. Different constituents in a sample may often be determined simultaneously provided they reduce at sufficiently different voltages. An example is the determination of copper and zinc in the same solution. The reduction potentials are quite far apart, as shown in Fig. I. The polarographic method is particularly useful in the range of concentration between those normally determined by spectographic and chemical methods. In

In many metallurgical studies, it is necessary to reveal the composition and structural properties of materials. Usually this is done by etching, but some substances do not etch well or easily. Anodizing is known to provide an alternate treatment in many cases. In general, this technique is simple, often more sensitive to composition differences than etching, has excellent resolution, and provides variable contrast in those elements and alloys which anodize. Here we report the use of anodizing in diffusion studies in the TiCb system. Fig. 1 shows a cross section of the diffusion zone in a TiCb couple. The anodizing has clearly revealed both composition and crystallographic features. The maximum bulk penetration of the titanium into the columbium is marked by a sharp line because of the steep concentration gradient. The titanium grain size and orientation differences are also evident. Variation in the grain size reflects the gradually decreasing columbium concentration.

AT a meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials at Atlantic City, June, 1908, Dr.. C. B. Dudley, in his presidential address,' showed the vital necessity of not only making a steel rail as good as in the past, but of making it considerably better in order to meet the present and prospective require¬ments of railroads. Doctor Dudley requested the co-operation of all who from personal experience could give information that would result in bringing about the production of a steel rail that could be relied upon to meet the present requirements. I have had considerable experience in the practical manufacture of steel of almost every grade, during the past 40 years, and I shall suggest changes that will bring about the results desired. Doctor Dudley has had a long experience as chemical and metallurgical expert for the Pennsylvania railroad, but he frankly admits that up to the present time both he and other metallurgical experts lack the practical knowledge of steel-making that is necessary to state correctly the reasons for the unreliability of the steel rails now produced. The necessity is self-evident for more positive practical knowledge on the part of these experts of what is possible and what is impossible regarding the practical manufacturing of steel rails from the ingot to the, finished product. Chemical knowledge in steel-making is far in advance of what it was years ago, and might be said to cover every requirement (in that department) for producing reliable steel. The study of the metallography of steel has been of great value, also the physical testing of steel, but this knowledge will only de-

THIS paper has been prepared with the principal objective of recording the results of the Bureau of Mines exploration of five major clay deposits in the Western Region. It is based mainly on data contained in unpublished Bureau of Mines reports. Acknowledgment is made to the Federal Geological Survey for its cooperative work with the Bureau of Mines, to the various State geological and mining departments, and other State and local agencies. CLAY EXPLORATION BY THE BUREAU OF MINES Much has been written and published on clays and clay deposits relating to their refractory, ceramic, and other qualities but such literature is lacking in analyses of the available alumina content of the clays and provides little indication of their possibilities as a source of alumina. With this new objective in view, a great many of the known clay deposits were reexamined and new ones discovered. The Bureau of Mines made preliminary examination of numerous areas in the western United States. Five of those most favorably indicated were systematically drilled, and in each a large amount of high-alumina clay has been found. These five major projects are Molalla and Hobart Butte, in western Oregon; Cowlitz-Castle Rock, in southwestern Washington; Lone, in California; and the Olson-Troy area in Idaho (Fig. I). Preliminary scout drilling was done in the Stockton deposit at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; the Whiteware deposit near Lewistown, Mont.; and 13 areas in the Spokane or eastern Washington region, where the most favorably indicated area, known as the Excelsior, is now being drilled more systematically. Preliminary drilling was undertaken in numerous areas adjacent to the major deposits and others more remote. As a result, large additional clay possibilities were found. THE CLAY DEPOSITS The clay deposits under consideration are of the sedimentary or transported types, parts of which have been altered further by the agencies of weathering, ground water, or hydrothermal action. There are extensive deposits of residual clays in northern Idaho and in eastern Washington, but they have been found to be low in the available alumina and to contain much free quartz, mica, and unaltered feldspar. To be of value, they must first be subjected to beneficiation to remove these gangue minerals. The sedimentary clays have been derived largely from the decomposition, erosion, and transportation of granites, gneisses, schists, and basalts. At Molalla, some

THIS is not simply the story of how a water filled shaft was developed into a million-ton- a-year producing mine in the space of four critical years, although it is reason enough for telling it, but it is also the saga of an engineering achievement in which knowledge nurtured by years of experience in coal and ore mines was blended together and the best from each type of mining selected. The entire system of mining was detailed on maps by the mining engineering department before the shaft was unwatered, and subsequent development followed these plans nearly to perfection. The selection of machinery was particularly critical as it was necessary to push production from only a few headings in the early stages of development and metal mine machinery was being used in a coal panel-system of mining.

Primarily, 1961 was a year for widespread application of tools and techniques which have become operational in the past several years • • • Raising --Raise climbers and climber raising techniques have been improved; narrow veins as low as 55° dip are now being mined from climber raises. Climber modifications include: larger motors, tighter radius curves negotiated, improved lubrication and new methods of stowing the climber during a blast. Climber raises are now ventilated in several ways: a 12-in. diam flexible vent tube behind the climber rail; a 6-in. diam pipe behind the climber rail (with fan); or a 6 to 8-in. diam drill hole along the axis of the raise. In hot raises, these ventilating techniques have resulted in more rounds per shift. When driving raises from crosscut and lateral development, mucking machine loading of raise rock is preferred over slusher ramp loading for the following reasons: a) faster set-up and teardown of climber facilities; b) easier access for climber maintenance, repair and loading of raising supplies; c) area at the bottom of the raise can be kept cleaner. Both wide and narrow veins are mined from 7 x 7-ft climber raises at Butte and at Republic, Wash. At Republic, climber rollers have been modified to support increased weight when driving 55°dip raises • Drilling-The new largebore, short-stroke push feed drills are much faster drilling than previous models and are most satisfactory in hard ground. Although reports on maintenance studies of the new drills are not yet available, increased steel and bit wear and breakage, and increased drill maintenance are seen as potential problems. Mines in Montana and Idaho continue to test rubber-collared drill steel. The fabricating methods used are successful but advantages in increased steel life have yet to be proved. Underground applications of down-the-hole drills continue. Drilling speed and accuracy are reported as the outstanding advantages. Manufacturers are now hopeful of making drills which will operate in any direction. Present applications are for ventilation holes (to 8 in. diam) for climber raises, holes for hydraulic fill distribution, drain holes and "predrilled" raises. Good drilling accuracy has been reported to a depth of 200 ft. Cutting holes in drifting is seen as a future application

The Selective Media Process was developed by the author in a laboratory provided by The Steams-Roger Manufacturing Co. It is the outcome of an investigation into the possibilities of coarse beneficiation by sink and float without using the conventional heavy media. Commercial work to date has been limited to the treatment of minus 3/8-in. iron ore at the Hill Trumbull washing plant of the Cleveland Clifis Iron Co., at Calumet, Minnesota. Two cut away prints of the machine are shown (Figs. I and 2). A rotary conical impeller is mounted within a stationary cone (Fig. 2). This impeller is adjustable vertically by a 12-ton screw jack. The speed of the impeller can be varied from 14 to 32 r.p.m. by the Reeves variable-speed motor pulley mounted on the 7½-hp. motor drive. Attached to the bottom of the stationary cone is the automatic control valve for sink product, actuated by a ¼-hp. gear motor. The sink product is dewatered in a conventional drag driven by a 7½-hp. motor and discharged onto an inclined conveyor containing from 6 to 10 per cent moisture. Two plants are operated at the Hill Trumbull property. All the ore is first treated in a typical washing plant (Fig. 3). when treating "wash ore" a finished concentrate can be produced by the log washers and Akins classifiers, as the separation involves only fine silica (minus 48-mesh) and free iron. For a nation whose mining industry has generally been floating through history in the shadows of major mining developments elsewhere in the world, Australia has in the decade of the Sixties made a convincing bid to be one of the world's great "store- houses" of minerals. In fact, at the rate things are developing Down Under and Out Back, what with professional prospecting teams crisscrossing the continent under the direction of professional exploration management, Australia may one day find itself as the world's greatest storehouse. Whereas Necessity may be the Mother of Invention, Consumption is surely the Mother of Exploration. At least this is true in Australia of today. First, the forecasted shortage of iron ore in the world led to the fabulous discoveries in the Pilbara district of Western Australia. Now, the demand for nickel has generated even more interest among mining companies in the vast, untapped potential of Australia.
