The structures formed when austenite is quenched to subcritical temperatures and allowed to transform isothermally have been the subject of intensive study since the work of Davcnport and Bain.' Isothermal transformation diagrams summarizing the results of many of these studies have become widely familiar to metallurgists. Of particular interest to metallographers are the dark-etchingl acicular products of transformation formed by isothermal reaction below the temperature of maximum velocity of the austenite to pearlite reaction. These products, the bainite structures, can he formed in a wide variety of steels. However, the constitution of bainite is not well understood and divergent views have been expressed as to its mode of formation. In this investigation a combination of dilatometric, microscopic and X-ray methods has been brought to bear upon the problem in the hope of some elucidation of the bainite reaction as it occurs in hypo-eutectoid steels. Mechanism OF Bainite Formation Davenport and Bainl considered the mechanism of bainite formation to consist of two steps—an allotropic transformation followed by precipitation of carbide. The separation in time of the two processes was considered to be very slight in the upper temperature range and very marked at temperatures just above the martensite range. This concept has been restated by Vilella, Guellich and Bain2 in the form of a definition of the acicular mode of transformation as: The successive, abrupt formation of flat plates of supersaturated ferrite along certain crystallographic planes of the austenite grains; this supersaturated ferrite begins at once to reject carbide palticles, (not lamellae), at a rate depending upon temperature In effect, this is the acicular mode of transformation, even though the temperature be such as to limit the actual life of the quasi-martensite to millionths of a second. The investigation of isothermal decomposition of austenite in certain alloy steels (notably those containing chromium or molybdenum) has revealed that there may be a range of temperatures between the pearlite and bainite reactions in which the austenite decomposes at a relatively low rate.3-6 Further, it is characteristic that in the second region of fast reaction the decomposition of the austenite is incomplete by one reaction but goes to completion by a second reaction. These observations led Wever7 to a description of the bainite reaction as follows: I. The reaction takes place by initial precipi. tation of a martensitic intermediate structure. 2. P. B. Baxendell is to be complimented for an exccllent piece of work. To our knowledge there has been no previous publication of field data on the flow of oil and gas through the annulus of a well. It is certainly gratifying to see this work on annular flow confirm the previous published correlation procedure on tubing flow. It extends considerably the range under which reliable gas-lift calculations can be made. Baxendell discussed this work with us about a year ago and was kind enough to send a large scale plot of his correlation. We had been designing gas-lift installations on flow through the annulus, assuming that the original correlation of the f factor based on tubing flow' was valid as long as we stayed within the same mass velocity range on which the correlation was based. Doing this work necessitated the use of an equivalent diameter for the annular flow. The equivalent diameter is defined as area' of stream cross section wetted perimeter and for the case of an annulus is D, — D,. Substituting this in the basic equation correlating energy loss along with the area to flow required to convert the velocity, to volumetric flow rate, D (Baxendell's Eq. 7) becomes dell's expression, D,). Similarly, the D in 1.4737 X 10 (M&/D) becomes (D, + D;) for annular flow. On receipt of Baxendell's data, we. of course, recalculated it to put it into the form we were using, and to see how well it agreed with the correlation based on tubing flow. Fig. 1 shows the results, which were certainly gratifying. For low values of (D, - D,) pv, the data coincide with the data on flow through tubing, whereas at high values the data on flow through the annuli appear to be leveling off to a constant value. For very high rates of flow where the turbulence is very high, one might expect the value f to level out and become constant. The purpose of this investigation was to prepare high-purity iron-carbon alloys, to determine as precisely as possible the A3(GOS), the Acm(SE), and the A1(PSK) transformation temperatures in the meta-stable iron-iron carbide system (up to 1.4 per cent C), and to study the influence of carefully controlled and constant rates of heating and cooling (1/8 to 2o C. per minute) upon the transformation temperature and upon the resulting microstructure. Apart from the general metallurgical importance attending the completion of such a task, it will be noted that highly precise transformation temperatures are of interest and importance in the thermodynamic study of this system1. Several determinations of the iron-iron carbide diagram have been made2. These suffer generally from the low purity of the alloys used, and from the application of methods of investigation of low sensitivity. Attempts to compare and weight the many data available in an effort to construct as accurate a diagram as possible have, in the main, been unsuccessful. In general, the wide differences in the results of different workers, the lack of complete analytical data, the omission of important details relating to the heat-treatment of the alloys, and the meager description of the methods of investigation applied, render such a process of averaging nearly meaningless. It may be seen from the summaries by Epstein2 and Körber and Oelsenl that variations as great as 30' C. exist in the reported data on the A3 temperatures in iron-carbon alloys. Fortunately, the Aa temperature in pure iron is now known to be 910" C. ± 1° C.3 The best recent work on iron-carbon alloys is that of Esser4 on hypoeutectoid steels and that of Sato5 on both hypoeutectoid and hyper-eutectoid steels. Esser made a dilatometric and magnetic study of iron and iron-carbon alloys containing 0.06 to 0.86 per cent C, for which a high purity is claimed. Presumably the electrolytic iron was reasonably pure, but the alloys contained considerable impurities, on the average totaling 0.35 per

The effect of rate of deformation on texture formatiotz has been studied with cube-oriented single crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe, compressed 80 pct at two widely different rates. Compression at a low rate (crosshead speed, 0.1 ipm) produces large orienta-tional changes and coarse deformation bands, whereas little change in orientation is observed, particularly at the surface of the crystal, when compressed at a high rate (impact velocity, -500 ips). Thin plates of mechanical twins are produced at the high rate, but their contribution to the deformation texture is practically negligible. The crystal deformed at a high rate has a lower hardness and a more uniform dislocation structure and is morc resistant to recrystallization. There is also a dilference in the recrystallization texture between the slowly and rapidly compressed crystals. These results indicate that plastic flow is less "turbulent" at high strain rates than at low strain ratcs. THE behavior of metals under high-speed deformation has been the subject of wide study in the past decade. Most of these works were concerned with mechanical properties during testing at high rates of loading, the resulting structures, and the theoretical aspects of the observed phenomena. The present status of knowledge and research activities in this field has been documented in recent publications.17' There is, however, very little information available in the literature concerning the effect of high-speed deformation on the texture formation in metals. The possibility of an effect of rate of deformation on texture is suggested by the microstructural differences observed between normally and very rapidly deformed samples. Aside from the strong tendency for twinning (and phase transformation in certain metals) in high-speed deformation, the slip-line patterns and the dislocation configurations show marked differences as a result of large differences in the strain rates. For instance, in mild steel in static and dynamic compression, Campbell and co-worker3,4 observed that coarse slip occurred on several systems in specimens deformed at normal strain rates, whereas specimens deformed rapidly showed only fine slip on fewer systems, the slip-line pattern being very similar to that in specimens deformed at low temperatures and at normal strain rates. The absence of multiple slip was also noticed by Dieter5 in shock-loaded nickel. The dislocation configuration in an iron shock loaded at 70 kbar pressure was shown by Leslie et al.6 to be similar to that produced by light rolling at low temperature—the dislocation lines were mostly straight and uniformly distributed. These observations suggest that the mode of deformation at high strain rates is notably different from that at low strain rates. Consequently, the nature and the extent of lattice reori-entation during deformation should also be different. This investigation was undertaken to test this idea. MATERIAL AND METHOD The remaining part of a single-crystal ingot of a 3 pct Si-Fe alloy,* prepared for an earlier investi- gation,1 was used in the present studies. Specimens 9/16 in. square and 0.365 in. thick were cut from this ingot with (001) planes parallel to the square surfaces, and the [loo] and 1010] directions parallel to the edges of the specimen, within ±1 deg. These machined crystals were etched to remove distorted metal, and annealed at 1300°C for 24 hr in a purified helium atmosphere. The annealed crystals had a hardness of 161 Dph. The crystal orientation was rechecked with X-ray back-reflection techniques. In high-strain rate experiments the crystal was compressed in a Dynapak machine to approximately 80 pct reduction in thickness (from 0.360 to 0.070 in. with an impact velocity of -500 ips). Thus, the duration of loading was approximately 6x 10-4 sec, and the average strain rate was about 103 sec-1. As a result of this rapid, severe deformation, the specimen became a roughly circular thin disc. The original shape of the crystal, however, could still be recognized by a diffusely outlined square area in the center of the disc. PART 1: DENSE MEDIUM SEPARATION by M. SOKASKI, M. R. GEER and H. F. YANCEY INTRODUCTION In the early days of coarse-coal treatment by the dense-medium process in Europe, loess was one of the materials used for medium solids. Newly developed cyclones were used to reclaim and thicken :he loess suspension. On occasion, when the cyclone thickener at the Maurits mine in the Netherlands plugged, the overflow was found to be filled with clean coal free of impurity. From this observation stemmed the concept of the cyclone as a cleaning device. Development took place during World War 11 in the laboratory of the Dutch State Mines under the direction of M. G. Driessen. A 15-ton-per-hour pilot plant was in operation in the laboratory by 1945, when, in September, Driessen made the first public disclosure of the process in a paper presented to the Institute of Fuel in London. In April 1945,2 operation of this pilot plant was observed by one of the authors, who was so impressed with the potential of the cyclone process that, on his return to the United States, a research program on the cyclone was started by the Bureau of Mines immediately. This work led to an AIME paper in 1946 in which the first details of cyclone operation on American coals was made available. Commercial adoption of the cyclone proceeded in Europe, initially in the Netherlands, Germany, and France. In the United States, where coal is less costly and most of the coals are so easy to clean they respond well to simpler cleaning systems, the first cyclone plant was not built until 1961.3 As of the spring of 1967, a total of 31 commercial cy- clone plants had been installed or were under construction in the United States; this does not include eight Dynawhirlpool plants. The capacity of the cyclone plants ranges from 50 to 1300 tons per hour and totals 6600. THEORY Before discussing the theory of a dense medium cyclone, a brief description may be helpful to some readers who are not familiar with its basic operation. In a typical dense-medium cyclone, illustrated in figure 10-1, the mixture of medium and raw coal enters tangentially near the top of the cylindrical section, thus forming a strong vertical flow. The refuse moves along the wall of the cyclone and is discharged through the under- flow orifice. The washed coal moves toward the longitudinal axis of the cyclone and passes through the vortex finder to the overflow chamber.

The Pu-In phase diagram has been determined by thevmal, filtvation, micrographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. This alloy system is characterized by 1) limited solubility of indium (-2 at. pet) in 6 and e plutonium, 2) one eutectic, and 3) fizte intermediate phases. Of the latter, PuIn and PuIn3 melt con-gruently, and Pu31n, Pu31n5, and the high-temperatuve 7 solid solution are formed peritectically. The n phase decomposes eutectoidally into Pu3In and PuIn at 865°C. Although the 6 phase can readily be retained to room temperature, it is not thermo-dynamically stable below 300°C. The Pu-In system has been investigated at Los Alamos as part of a study of the alloys of plutonium with the group 111-B elements. Constitutional studies of the Pu-A1 and Pu-Ga systems have been reported earlier.'9' To date, published information on the constitution of Pu-In alloys covers only the identification of the intermediate phases Pu3In and PuIn3.3,4 EXPERIMENTAL The alloys were prepared from five different lots of plutonium and three different lots of indium. The principal impurities in the plutonium differed from lot to lot within the following limits (in ppm): iron, 30 to 80; nickel, 30 to 60; aluminum, 15 to 30; silicon, 20 to 145: thorium, 50 to 300; carbon, 75 to 335; and oxygen, 20 to 135. Spectroanalysis of the indium showed that two of the lots were 99.9 wt pct pure, and the third was 99.98 wt pct pure. The alloys, in the form of about 5-g buttons, were prepared by arc melting in conventional equipment. The components for each alloy were weighed to the nearest 0.1 mg. In most instances the weight losses during melting were negligible; therefore confirmatory chemical analyses were usually not made. A few results are given in Table I. Density measurements of the arc-cast buttons were made by the liquid displacement of bromoben-zene. Heat treating was done in muffle furnaces controlled to +2°C. The alloy buttons were wrapped in tantalum foil before being enclosed in evacuated clear silica capsules. As a precaution against breakage, each capsule was in turn placed in a silica tube closed with a refractory wool plug prior to being charged into the furnace. For a moderately fast quench of the alloys, the outer protection tubes containing the capsules were plunged into cold water. Differential thermal analyses (DTA) in racuo were performed at heating and cooling rates of about 1.5°C per min. Tantalum crucibles having inverted thermocouple wells were used for most of the analyses. It was found micrographically, however, that the liquid alloys containing more than about 35 at. pct In reacted with the tantalum, resulting in contamination of the surface of the alloy. A search for a more satisfactory crucible material was not successful: tungsten and yttria behaved comparably to tantalum; thoria, vitrified magnesia, and vitrified alumina severely contaminated the alloys. Reliable and detailed data covering the enormous number of wells drilled and the long historical production of the state, many of which were never recorded until recent years, render it impossible to gather statistical material suitable for the Institute's standardized form. The total production of crude oil in Ohio for the year was 3,654,503 bbl., which is less than the total production in the United States for the peak day of August 1937. For a period of eight years, from 1895 to 1902 inclusive, Ohio produced more oil than any other state. During the year, 1271 tests were drilled in the state, or 114 more than in 1936. Of these, 317 were oil wells, with an initial production of 7088 bbl., an average of 22.3 bbl. per well; 503 were gas wells, with an initial open flow of approximately 222,441 M cu. ft., or 443 M cu. ft. per gas well drilled; 451 were dry holes, that is, 35 per cent of the total completions. A number of factors account for the steady decline of oil production in Ohio. In the state, at the close of thc year, there were fewer than 28,122 producing oil wells. In 1936, there were 30,150 operated oil wells with an average yearly production per well of 126 bbl. The production for 1937 averaged 130 bbl. per well. During the year, 2028 oil wells were abandoned. In other words, old wells are being abandoned more than six times faster than new ones are being drilled. Since the inception of the oil and gas industry in Ohio, between 150,000 and 160,000 wells have been drilled in the state; new potential territory, offering desirable locations for either oil or gas, is becoming increasingly more difficult to find; the dry-hole percentage will continue to increase. Prices Another factor directly affecting the crude situation during the year was the matter of price and proration of Pennsylvania grade oil. The posted price for Pennsylvania grade in Ohio on June 7 was $2.37 per barrel; at the close of the year, it was $1.70 per barrel, or a reduction of 28 per cent in price. The method of decrease in surface activity was used to determine the rates of diffusion of Co" into cobalt and into nickel. Since the absorption curves for cobalt radiation were quite complex under the conditions of these experiments, the effects of geometry and surface preparation on the diffusion results were investigated. The cobalt self-diffusion coefficients obey the equation DCoco = e-61100/RT cm2 per sec. For dilute cobalt diffusing in nickel, DConi, == 1.46 e-/R' cm2 er sec. AS part of the general program to measure the self-diffusion and dilute-solution diffusion rates of the iron-group metals, the diffusion coefficients of cobalt into cobalt and nickel have been measured using the radioactive isotope Co"'. Self-diffusion studies in iron have been previously reported by Birchenall and Mehl.' The technique of measurement used was the decrease in surface activity method described by Steigman, Shockley, and Nix.' It has been determined that scattering of the measured beta radiation by the specimen matrix is significantly influenced by the condition of the surface and the counting geometry. Accurate diffusion coefficients can be calculated from the activity data provided that the specimens have plane diffusion surfaces and that the absorption properties of the emitted radiation are determined under geometrical conditions duplicating with external absorbers the absorption and scattering in a thin film at the specimen surface as nearly as possible. The cobalt used in this research was originally in the form of hydrogen reduced rondels 99.9+ pct pure. The nickel had been prepared by the carbonyl process and was found by spectrographic analysis to contain 0.03 pct Fe, 0.04 pct Co and smaller traces of other metallic elements for a balance purity of 99.9+ pet Ni. Both materials were vacuum melted and cast in rectangular ingots. Specimens 7/8x7/8x1/4 in. were machined from these ingots. The specimens were then ground to 4-0 emery paper and annealed in hydrogen for at least a day at 1200°C. Some of the specimens were used in preliminary experimentation after which their diffusion faces were machined to remove the radioactive material from the previous diffusion experiments. After grinding, the specimens were polished using an electrolytic lapping technique described by Mazia." This lapping was continued until at least 0.005 in. was removed from the diffusion surface. The final surfaces were metallographically smooth except for a few fine scratches caused by the glass cloth. A large percentage of the area was undisturbed as determined by microscopic examination. The grain diameters of the diffusion specimens varied from 0.1 to 5 mm. There were no effects due to grain boundary diffusion in the experiments

In most instances the fluids produced from underground reservoirs have been described as they appear at the surface, and usually it has not been necessary to distinguish between surface and reservoir phases. More recently it has become imperative to recognize the fact that changes in phase may occur between the reservoir and the receiving unit. The simple terminology of "wet" and "dry" gases and "crude petroleum oil" served our needs fairly well in the shallow, low-temperature and low-pressure fields. It has been left to the legislatures, regulatory commissions, and courts to decide whether a field is or was a gas field, an oil field, or both. This they have done by direct definition and also by implication. For example, in Texas:' (d) The term "gas well" is any well (a) which produces natural gas not associated or blended with crude petroleum oil at the time of production, or (b) which produces more than one hundred thousand (100,000) cubic feet of natural gas to each barrel of crude petroleum oil from the same producing horizon, or (c) which produces natural gas from a formation or producing horizon productive of gas only encountered in a well bore through which crude petroleum oil is also produced through the inside of another string of casing. (e) The term "oil well" is any well which produces one (1) barrel or more of crude petroleum oil to each one hundred thousand (100,000) cubic feet of natural gas. In the state of Louisiana, the same general result is achieved largely by the following paragraph :* Wells producing both oil and gas shall not waste or blow into the air an amount of gas of more value at three cents per thousand cubic feet, than the market value of the oil recovered. The Commissioner of Conservation shall allow a reasonable time to determine the status of any well. For more than 100 years, the Republic of Chile has been one of the leading copper-producing countries of the world. Between 1877 and 1880 Chile accounted for over 50 pet of total world copper production. Today it has the world's largest known reserves of copper ore and a capability of producing over 600,000 tons per year. This capacity can and will be increased as the world demand for copper grows steadily during the remaining years of this century. The Potrerillos mine of Andes Copper Mining Co., a subsidiary of The Anaconda Co., was developed in the rugged, high Cordilleras in the early 1920's, and the townsite, concentrator, leaching plants, smelter, railroad, power and port facilities were completed so that it came into full production in 1927. Since then and until the closing o f the mine in June of last year, 1,762,192 tons o f copper were produced.

A simple model for dilute interslitial solid solutions is set up which enables a solubility equation for the equilibrium between the solid solution and the gaseous solute to be deduced. This solubility equation is used to estimate the partial thermody -namic functions of Ag-O and Fe-N dilute interstitial solid solutions from the measured equilibrium between these solutions and the gas phase. It is shown that the partial excess entropy of the solute atom in solution is a vibrational entropy which is due Principally to the oscillation of the interstitial atom and does not arise from electronic or elastic interaction between the solute atoms and solvent matrix. In this work measurements of the equilibrium between dilute solid interstitial solutions and a gaseous phase are used to deduce the important thermody-namic functions of the solid solution with the aid of a theoretical solubility equation formulated from a knowledge of the thermodynamic functions of the gas and a simple model for the solid solution. The quantity of principal interest which is deduced from the equilibrium data is the change in vibrational entropy occurring when a solute atom (u) is placed in an interstial site in the solvent (u) lattice. This paper forms part of a more general study in which the properties of condensed phases are deduced from measurements of the equilibrium between the condensed phase and a gas. Previous investigations have dealt with the equilibrium between krypton and liquid metals,' a pure metal and its vapor,' and dilute substitutional alloys and the vapor,3 and the subject has been popularly reviewed by McLellan.4 In the latter investigation3 the vapor pressures of very dilute Cu-Ag and Cu-Au alloys were measured with a Knudsen cell technique over a large range of temperatures and the analysis of the vapor-pressure data showed that the relative partial excess entropies were large and positive [ds= -Sudk = 30 for Au-Ag alloys and 150 for Cu-Au alloys; these values should be compared to unity, the value assumed for these exponentials in the quasi-chemical theory of solutions]. For many interstitial solutions experimental data is available for the equilibrium between the solution and a gaseous phase, and this can be used to deduce the vibrational entropies of the solute atoms in solution. The general method employed is to calculate the chemical potential of the solute atoms in the gas and equate this to pi, the chemical potential of solute atoms in the solid, which is deduced from a simple model set up for the dilute interstitial solution (in which the solute atoms act as bound oscillators in interstitial sites). This enables a theoretical solubility equation to be set up. In the case of Ag-O and Fe-N solid solutions the solubility c, is found to vary with temperature according to a relation of the type, where PU2 is the pressure of the O2 or Np molecules. Essentially, the theoretical solubility equation enables the parameter A(T), which gives the vibration entropy, and the parameter AH, which gives the energy of solution of a solute atom, to be estimated from the measured variation of solubility with temperature. The solutions treated are dilute enough to enable solute-solute interactions to be neglected so that the partial energy and excess entropy of solution E, and GS are not functions of composition and the configurational entropy is that of a random solution. Large positive values have been found for sxSu this quantity has not been given sufficient consideration in recent work on interstitial solutions and it is felt that the partial thermodynamic quantities of very dilute solutions should be understood before the thermodynamics of concentrated solutions can be fully appreciated. EXPERIMENTAL DATA 1) The Silver-Oxygen System. The measurements of Steacie and Johnson,= using silver foils, indicate that there is a pronounced minimum in the solubility vs temperature curve for O-Ag solutions. Eichenauer and Miiller6 have recently redetermined the solubility of oxygen in silver using a method developed in the investigation of metal-hydrogen systems.7 The solubility determinations were carried out on compact specimens of differing shapes and sizes and the results indicate a much lower solubility than was obtained by Steacie and Johnson with no minimum at 400°C. Large clocks seldom have figures on their faces, and each hour on this one will be marked by a gold star, the four faces containing 48 stars, one for each State of the Union. Contributions toward the memorial have been received from every one of the States, and from Alaska and Hawaii as well, but additional subscriptions are invited by the Com-mittee which is arranging for the memorial.

The: mysterious Lake Erie price for iron ore, established each spring, determines the maximum price that will be paid during the following season for ore of Mesabi Non-Bessemer base grade. This price is important to the ore producers, hut since most of the ore in the Lake Superior district is owned or controlled by consuming interests, the really important question to them is not the price of ore but how much it will cost them to mine and transport their season's requirements to their furnace plants. However, a few million tons are actually sold each year, and considerable quantities are traded for mixing purposes, and the negotiations lor these sales and trades usually begin with some reference to the Lake Erie price. There is no difficulty with the Lake Erie price itself or with the manner in which it is established, but the system prescribed for determining the values of ores that are not exactly base grade is incomplete. The Lake Erie price takes into consideration only the iron and phosphorus contained in the ore, but when the ore producer is negotiating a sale or trade, he is confronted by the fact that his ore must he studied and the price adjusted, not only on the basis of the iron and phosphorus analyses, as specified by the Lake Erie price, but also on the basis of silica! alumina, manganese, structure, etc. The vague and unsatisfactory methods used in making these adjustments bear some relation to the manner in which the ore is supposed to act in the blast furnace. The ore producer may not understand all of the idiosyncrasies of the blast furnace, but if the smelting-plant operators have a system more accurate than the Lake Erie price method for determining the relative values of different ores, why not pass this information on to the ore producers, so that they can make use of it and perhaps modify their practice in such a manner as to benefit both themselves and their customers? There is a lack of understanding and appreciation between these two groups that may, to some extent, be unavoidable, but in the interests of efficiency and conservation rules that are more accurate and complete than the Lake Erie price method in use at the present time should be established for the guidance of the ore producers. Recently a paper was read before the Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association, by Mr. G. W. Hewitt, Manager Production, Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Department, Wheeling Steel Corporation, in which he explained how his company determines the relative values of different grades of Non-Bessemer ore. This is a very important paper, perhaps not so much on account of the actual calculation methods described as because of the fact that premiums and penalties are shown on Non-Bessemer ores for silica, alumina, phosphorus, and manganese. The paper is in two parts. The first develops the formulae and method needed to calculate the size, nu)nber, spacing, and volume fraction of hard or inert particles in the interior of a specimen from measurernents made on an extraction replica; throughout, the spread of- particle sizes in a single specimen is taken into account, and the extraction efficiency of the replica is considered. A method for testing whether the particles are randotnly distributed in space is described, and the spacing of randomly distributed particles is discussed. The second Part describes the application of the method to copper containing spherical particles of silica; the description includes an estimate of the errors involved, and a comparison of this with alternative methods. All parameters except uolume fraction can be determined satisfactorily, and the method offers advantages over other electron-,rzicroscopic techniques when dealing with hard particles in a softer matrix, or inert particles in a chem-ically less inert matrix. 1 HE experimental measurement of sizes and numbers of discrete particles of a second phase embedded in a matrix material from opaque, plane sections has been considered by many authors, notably by Fullman.' It is assumed that, when the specimen is sectioned, the particles are also sectioned, so that the diameters of the circles of intersection of particles with the plane of the cross section ("surface diameters") are measured. It is difficult to derive the distribution of true particle diameters ("volume diameters") from measurements of the distribution of "surface diameters" on a plane section. The measurement of size and numbers of small second-phase particles by transmission electron microscopy through thin foils of matrix containing the particles has been described by Cahn and ~uttin~' and by ~illiard.~ Because of overlap and the fact that particles which intersect the foil surface may be sectioned whereas those in the bulk of the foil are not, it is again difficult to measure the true distribution of particle sizes. The use of replicas for this sort of measurement has not been analyzed in detail. A replica made from an opaque cross section, thus replicating the circles of intersection of particles with the plane of section, is analyzed by Fullman's method and suffers from the same difficulties. Under certain circumstances, however, extraction replicas can be used, and offer a special advantage in that they make the determination of the true distribution of particle diameters particularly simple. It is the purpose of this paper to describe this extraction replica method. Consider the example of an alloy consisting of SiOz particles, whose mean diameter is about 1000A, dispersed in a copper matrix. When the alloy is sectioned and mechanically polished, the particles are not sectioned, because they are much harder than the matrix, and so will be either left in the surface or pulled out whole, and because the particle size is smaller than the abrasive size of even the finest abrasive. The particles are chemically inert in solutions which chemically etch or electropolish the matrix, so that chemical treatments do not section the particles either. (Experimental measurements of particle shape in this alloy confirm this—truncated particles are never seen.) Small, hard or inert, particles are therefore not sectioned when the specimen is sectioned and polished. An extraction replica taken from this polished surface shows the true "volume" diameter of each extracted particle; the distribution of diameters seen on the replica is the surface distribution of true "volume" diameters, and the volume distribution of true "volume" diameters is easily derived from it. The extraction replica method is not subject to the difficulties associated with sectioning of particles, and avoids the problem of overlap from which the transmission method suffers. The method is well-suited for studying hard particles in a soft matrix. Examples are provided by internally oxidized alloys, oxide-dispersion strengthened metals like T.D. Nickel, and carbides, nitrides, and strong intermetallic compounds in metals. It should be possible to adapt polishing techniques in alloys containing softer but inert particles to avoid sectioning the particles (say by electropolishing or etching). The method is tested and illustrated in Sections 8 and 9 by applying it to a dispersion of spherical SiO2 particles in a copper matrix. PART I-PREPARATION OP METALLIC SINGLE CRYSTALS WITH ESPECIAL REFERENCE TO SINGLE CRYSTALS OP ZINC? As metals and alloys are composed, of, an aggregate of allotriomorphic crystals or grains, each possessing an individual orientation, the physical characteristics of a metal or an alloy are closely related to the properties of the individual crystals. The preparation and study of single metallic crystals are, therefore, matters of considerable importance. The advent of the X-ray spectrograph as a valuable metallurgical tool has magnified the importance of this subject, because the interpretation of some X-ray spectrographs is difficult unless single crystals are used in these studies. PREVIOUS WORK The first paper, as far as the writer knows, on the behavior or preparation of single crystals of metals is by Baker.1 He describes the behavior of extruded wires of sodium and potassium. These wires, when pulled in tension, instead of I showing the usual conical fracture common to most metals, had a chisel-shaped fracture when they were broken. I and II, Fig. 1, have a similar fracture. Baker checked his results by preparing single crystal wires from molten sodium and potassium and observing their properties. He prepared the wires by filling glass tubes, under oil, with the molten metal. The surfaces of the strained wires showed slip bands of remarkable clearness of which photographs are shown in his paper. He concluded that these wires were single crystals and "that the portions of the metal brought into play are cubes. Such cubes, when placed so that a plane through 'two opposite edges was parallel to the axis of the wire, would allow of lateral contraction by faces gliding over one another in one direction only and not in the direction at right angles."
