The solubilities of oxygen in liquid Ag-Au, Ag-Pt, and Ag-Pd alloys have been determined in the range of 940° to 1200°C at 1 atm pressure of oxygen using an improved Sieverts technique. The additions of gold (0 to 57 pct), platinum (0 to 27 pct), and palladium (0 to 22 pct) to liquid silver continuously decrease the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver. Activity coefficients and interaction coefficients of oxygen in these alloys and have been calculated. The interaction coefficientscan be described by the following equations: Approximate second-order interaction coefficients (pM have been calculated. The contribution of the product, pMxNM, to In yo only becomes significant at high alloy concentrations. RECENTLY several investigators1"3 have redeter-mined the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver. In general the recent findings1" for Po, = 1 atm are in good agreement with the equation:4 log %O = 695.4/T + 1.086 [1] It is established1, 2 that the solubility of oxygen follows Sieverts' law reasonably well, at least up to 1 atm partial pressure of oxygen. It should be noted that a very slight deviation from Sieverts' law has been reported by Lupis and Elliott.3 Only recently has the solubility of oxygen in Ag-X binary liquid systems received much attention, and only the Ag-Cu, Ag-Au, Ag-Pt, and Ag-Pd systems have been studied. Par lee, Sacris, and zoellners reported that the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver increases progressively with the small additions of copper (0 to 0.5 pct) up to the point where the copper oxide phase appears. Lupis and ~lliott~ have reported that the solubilities of oxygen in liquid silver decrease progressively with the additions of gold, platinum, and palladium. However, their investigation was limited to 0 to 5 pct of these alloying elements, a range too limited to satisfy the requirements of the research program of this laboratory, where the solubilities of oxygen in the range of 0 to 30 pct were required for the calculation of chemical diffusion coefficients of oxygen in these alloys. The present paper deals only with the solubilities of oxygen in these alloys while another paper will deal with the diffusion of oxygen in these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD A Sieverts technique was employed which involved an improved design of the reaction tube, Fig. 1, as described briefly in a previous communication.4 Liquid melts (70 to 100 g) were held in Norton Alun-dum crucibles. The induction furnace used had a maximum output of 2.5 kw with very fine control. This induction system had excellent stability and the final equilibrium temperatures measured by calibrated Pt-Pt, 10 pct Rh thermocouples are believed to be within ±2C. These thermocouples were checked against the melting point of pure gold wire, and the results agreed with standard tables (±l°C). Each run involved a careful sequence of operations. The sample was heated to and held at about 900°C in vacuum for 3 to 4 hr with the thermocouple in a retracted position. After melting, the melts were usually exposed to a small amount of oxygen (0.5 to 2.0 cu cm) and then degassed slowly for 1 to 2 min to remove any oxidizable volatile impurities such as carbon and sulfur as CO, CO2, SO2, and SO forth. Analytical and experimental procedures are descrihed for quantitative determination of volume-fraction microporosity in metals by mimorarlio-graphg. The analysis assumes spherical pores but allows for the observed fact that pores or portions of pores smaller than a given thickness do not project an image on the film. Volume-fraction microporosity was measuured in cast low-alloy steel and shown to vary from 0.6 x 10-4 to 10 x 10 depending on mode of solidification and on whether the material was air- or vacuum-cast. The aim of work described herein was to develop a method of quantitative measurement of the volume fraction of microporosity in cast metals. Microporosity, present in nearly all castings and ingots, is always interdendritic in nature and may be large enough to be seen on a polished surface with the naked eye. More generally, it is smaller in size, and its detection more difficult. Three techniques might be considered for measurement of microporosity: 1) lineal analysis of a polished metallographic surface, 2) density measurement, or 3) quantitative microradiography. As will be shown later, volume fractions of porosity in directionally solidified castings may be the order of 10-4 to 10-3; such small amounts of porosity are difficult to identify and measure on a polished surface. Density measurement is also not a suitable technique (for alloys) when the volume fraction of porosity is low. This is because the density of the base metal is often not known within the necessary accuracy, due to microsegregation or partial phase transformations. In general, it is not possible to completely eliminate microsegregation without also altering the porosity. Because of the limitations of the foregoing techniques, quantitative microradiography was employed to determine amount of porosity. In recent work, microradiography has been found to be useful for qualitative measurement of porosity, including determination of size and shape of individual pores;&apos;)&apos; however, quantitative determination of amount of porosity has not been attempted. I) CALCULATION OF VOLUME-FRACTION POROSITY The following analysis employs procedures similar to those of Cahn and Nutting3 and Hilliard.4 Major simplifications are that pores are assumed to be spherical and to be present in sufficiently small quantities that no overlapping occurs. A basic difference from the previous treatments is that the limited "sensitivity" of microradiography is considered. Assume first 1) cavities are spherical and of uniform diameter, 2) cavities are randomly distributed, 3) volume-fraction porosity and specimen thickness to pore radius ratio are sufficiently small that overlapping of the projected images of cavities is negligible, 4) sensitivity is limited (i.e., holes or portions of holes of less than a given thickness do not project an image on the film). The sensitivity, is defined as: where 5 = minimum thickness of void from which an image will be projected on the film and t = specimen thickness. Now, from Fig. 1, it is possible to distinguish between two different types of holes. These are 1) holes whose centers lie within the region t/2 > X > 6/2, where X is distance from one surface of the specimen (positive into the specimen), and 2) holes whose centers lie within the region (6 — r) < X < 6/2, Holes whose centers lie outside X = (6 -r) project no image on the film. These two types of pores are considered separately below. Type 1 Pores. When 6 is greater than 0, the image of a spherical cavity of radius r appears on the film as a circle of radius a which is smaller than r. In attempting to study precipitation from a tetragonal lattice, using solid solutione of bismuth in tin, it was found that although a Widmanstätten pattern is observed1,4 only a qualitative analysis of the orientation relationships is possible, because of the unusual structural changes that accompany the precipitation process. Microscopical Studies Alloys were made from Chempur tin (Standard samples 42b and 426, National Bureau of Standards), and bismuth (Kahl-baum C.P.) by melting weighed quantities together under palm oil, stirring well, and castilig in a heated graphite mold. The polishing and etching techniques employed largely govern the visibility of the structural changes. The preliminary surfacing operations were similar to those recommended by Villela and Bergekoff,5 through Behr-Manning 3/0 abrasive papers, lubricated by a solution of paraffin in kerosene. A rough metallographic polish was next given, using a thin cotton cloth charged with relevigated alumina (maximum particle size of about 4µ) and soap solution; repeated etching and polishing served to remove disturbed metal. For high-power examination better preparation was necessary. It was found that on such soft metals the threads of the fabric, rather than the abrasive, cause most of the scratching. Cotton outing flannel, which had been brushed so that the nap lay down, was fairly satisfactory, but a heavy grade of silk velvet (not the noncrushable kind) was found to be better, especially after some use. A better procedure was as follows: The metal lap was warmed slightly, and a 4-in. circle of woolen broadcloth was cemented to its center by a thin film of melted paraffin. The broadcloth was then moistened with water, and a 30 to 40 per cent solution of sodium hydroxide heated to about 50°C. was poured over it, allowed to stand for I to 2 min. and then washed off. It was neither necessary nor desirable to remove all the sodium hydroxide from the cloth, since its etching action aided in the removal of the flowed layer from the sample. The cloth was then charged with a paste of the relevigated alumina in water. Since this lap did not remove deep scratches, it was necessary previously to polish the specimen on some material such as the silk velvet. The sodium hydroxide softens and partly gelatinizes the woolen lap covering, permitting a scratch-free polish, but its action continues, and the cloth deterioratcs after about 24 hr. This is not serious, because a new lap can be prepared in about 5 min., and only small pieces of cloth are used. Etching with a strongly acid solution of ferric chloride was found satisfactory for removing the flowed layer. For the final etching, the most satisfactory reagent was that of Tafls,7 the formula for which is: FeC13.6H2O, 2 grams; HC1, 5 c.c.; H2O, 30 c.c.; C2H5OH (95 per cent), 60 C.C. THE rolling process may be considered as a case of a nonhomogeneous plastic flow. In such a heterogeneous deformation there is no direct general solution, and the plastic deformation varies from point to point as a function of the coordinates. It is practicable to determine these plastic strains only at the conclusion of the rolling process, and the local strains can be studied by observing the deformations produced in a suitably placed grid system. Strains at the surface of a bar after rolling have been reported by MacGregor and Coffin,&apos; but the strain distributions within the bar have not been previously observed. Siebel² has investigated the plastic deformations resulting from wire-drawing by splitting the wire along its axis, milling a grid coordinate system on the inner plane surfaces, and binding the .wire together so that it would pull through a die as a single unit. This method was possible because of the rotational symmetry of the die. In the rolling process, however, such a system was not readily applicable. This paper describes another method of including a grid system, and reports some preliminary data on the plastic rolling strains within a square bar. Experimental Procedure 2.1 mm wide (144 network squares per sq in.) was punched from a thin lead sheet with a steel die and supported in a brass mold by thin copper wires. Pure tin was then poured around the grid to form a solid bar, with the network securely imbedded at. a given position. This bar was then machined to a square 15.2 mm (0.60 in.) wide, and then radiographed. The lead grid was quite adherent and sufficiently ductile to follow the deformation of the bar faithfully. The network lines also remained sharp enough to maintain a high radiographic contrast, and the tin bar, with the grid included, could withstand considerable deformation at room temperature without splitting at the interface. In order to fill the mold, it was necessary to cast the tin at 260-280°C and during pouring the lead grid was supported at short intervals to prevent warping. Some shrinkage cavities were encountered, but only bars which were free of shrinkage in the network region were used. This method is similar to the one employed by Steinberg" in an investigation of the strain distribution in a tensile specimen. Before rolling, the machined bars were radiographed in two directions to obtain accurate initial dimensions of each square and to observe whether the grid was straight and correctly positioned. The rolling was performed in a small hand mill with 2 in. diam rolls at room temperature, and a 20 pct reduction based on the original height was employed. The rolls were clean and no lubricant was used. Halfway through the bar, at the center of the network, the rolls were reversed and the bar extracted. These bars were then radiographed again

At Ithaca Peak, one of three peaks situated on Duval Corporation's Mineral Park property, a 'Single pulse of quartz monzonite magma intruded the isoclinally folded Precambrian Cerbat complex consisting of schist, quartzfeldspar gneiss, and amphibolite. The magma reacted with the Precambrian rocks, yielding a quartz-diorite rim. As the magma crystallized within the rim, it produced, progressing in'ward, annular bodies of quartz monzonite porphyry, quartz porphyry, and a distinctive quartz porphyry containing abundant podiform, tabular, and irregular quartz masses. These quartz masses are spatially associated with discontinuous crenulate and tabular quartz veinlets. Following crystallization, the Ithaca Peak stock and part of the surrounding Cerbat complex were fractured, producing a stockwork of predominantly northwest and northeast-trending fractures. The stockwork was then mineralized during a period of decreasing temperature by: ( 1) quartz-pyritechalcopyrite veinlets without distinct selvages and with distinct alteration envelopes in which orthoclase was altered to quartz and sericite; (2) quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite veins and veinlets with distinct selvages and without distinct alteration envelopes; and (3) pyrite-chalcopyrite- galena-sphalerite veins. The Ithaca Peak stock was pervasively sericitized or argillized. The Mineral Park property is surrounded by a zone of propylitization Alteration and mineralization are coextensive in space and were, at least in part, coincident in time. The Mineral Park property possibly was elevated and exposed twice prior to its present exposure. The protore has been enriched by a factor of three. The Ithaca Peak supergene ore body is conformable with present topography and lies above the present water table. The shape of the ore body was controlled by erosion and oxidation of the previously enriched mineralization. Hematite, goethite, and jarosite present at the surface indicate a high primary pyrite environment, but it is possible to recognize that a small proportion of veins and veinlets contained greater amounts of chalcocite and chalcopyrite than pyrite. The igneous facies on Ithaca Peak are the products of differentiation within a solidifying rim according to Bowen's Reaction series. The innermost facies contain more quartz and orthoclase than the outer facies. Late magmatic quartz in the case of Ithaca Peak contains small amounts of pyrite and molybdenite. It is suggested that this quartz-sulfide mineralization, may also have been the product of differentiation the product of differentiation, may indicate that the later hydrothermal mineralization may also have been the product of differentiation.

I. INTRODUCTION. THE central power-station. of the De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., was designed and built under my supervision about five years ago. Since no detailed description of this plant has ever appeared, it may possess sufficient interest to warrant its publication, even at this late date. Although some additions may have been Blade to the plant, the following account, prepared from my notes, and accurate up to May, 1905 (at which time I severed my connection with the De Beers Com¬pany), will, I think, be found substantially correct. Certain local conditions governing the design of this plant should be stated first. If. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. The climate is hot and dry. The .region around Kimberley is arid and water is very scarce. The supply obtained from the mines contains so much material in solution that it is unfit for use in boilers or condensers (although tests recently made with a water-softening plant, built by Hans Reisert, of Germany, would indicate that water thus treated is suitable for boilers). And the amount of water required for concentrating about 30,000 tons of ore per day is so large that the question of adequate water-supply for this power-station had to be carefully considered. The rainy season extends from December to April, and the rainfall averages about 15 in. per year. Droughts are frequent; and in some years there is scarcely any rain at all. The water-supply for the town of Kimberley is brought from the Vaal river, 16 miles distant, and pumped into town by a private water company. The charge made for water, which is

There is mitigation for the sorrow of friends and the tragedy of sudden death when that death comes at the height of a successful career. It is not everyone&apos;s privilege to die, as has been the wish of many, in the harness—toiling, accomplishing, still necessary to the scheme of things. Nor is it everyone&apos;s privilege to leave a monument to his work. Dr. Fred Walter McNair died thus—in the midst of his work of educating, leaving along the path down the quarter century of his presidency of the Michigan College of Mines hundreds of men who, having come under his influence, have been successful in life.

DURING the course of the present investigation of alloy phases involving transition metals, phases were found in the systems Os-Ta, Os-W, and Ir-Ta. The (Os, W) phase was also recently reported by Raub.1 Pertinent information is given in Table 1. The approximate composition range of sta- bility was determined metallographically on arc-melted buttons that were annealed 72 hr at 1200°C and water quenched. X-ray powder patterns were obtained with a 114.6 mm diam powder camera using filtered copper radiation. The composition for (Os, W) given by Raub (66 atomic pct W) is in agreement with the composition range reported here. However, the lattice constants reported by Raub are: a0= 9.913±0.007, c/a= 0.515. The reason for the discrepancy between the lattice constants reported by Raub and those given here is not known. Acknowledgments The authors wish to thank M. H. Mueller and H. W. E DUCATION for the mineral industry was at first a single comprehensive curriculum, but it was early recognized that the main basis of mining is physics, while that of metallurgy is chemistry. The first school to offer curricula leading to degrees in mineral industry education in the United States (1853) had separate ones in mining and metallurgy. The Columbia School of Mines (the first really successful one) had only a single curriculum when it opened in 1864, but within a few years had so reorganized its work that it offered curricula in mining, metallurgy, geology, chemistry, and civil engineering. Interest in the metallurgy or geology curricula was slight at first, and for the next 30 years the great majority of Columbia students took the mining curriculum, probably partly because it contained nearly as much geology as the geology curriculum, practically all the metallurgy, and most of the chemistry, and partly because of the degree awarded for it. Other schools kept their mining curricula equally broad, and as late as 1900-1910 men were graduating as mining engineers who were practically as well prepared to make geology or metallurgy their life work, as they were for mining. Gradually, however, the subject matter of mining geology and metallurgy became so enriched through research and development that separate curricula in them became worth while; their progressive development is the subject of another chapter. Mining curricula also began to be somewhat diversified, and schools in areas where coal mining was of outstanding importance began to offer options in coal mining, the earlier curricula having been chiefly aimed at metal mining. The petroleum industry began its meteoric rise about the same time as mineral instruction in this country, but little more of applied science attended its birth than had attended such ancient practical arts as copper and iron

FEW indeed are the sections of the country where trained or partly trained workers have not already been hired by a war industry plant or will be within the near future. Yet right in the midst of the heavily industrialized East lies the anthracite area, home of a million people, whose productive power has persistently been by-passed either by private industry or by the Government Plant Site Board. The chief reason given for not locating war plants in the area is that it is not within the strategic zone, but in numerous instances elsewhere this rule has been waived. Furthermore, the anthracite region is well protected on all sides by mountains and is at all points more than 100 miles inland. Continued depression in the anthracite industry and a crippling blow dealt by the war emergency to the production of silk and rayon goods, the chief manufacturing activity of the area, have resulted in a heavy migration, particularly of trained young workers, into near-by industrial areas. At least 50,000 people are currently unemployed, with the likelihood of an increase in coming months, and as many families are on relief.

AT most smelting plants, forced draft, induced by high stacks or fans, is used to carry the gases away from the furnaces, roasters, or sintering plants. Gases moving under forced draft carry varying amounts of solids in the form of dust and fume. Where the weight of the solids is material, and the metal content high, it is usually profitable to treat the gases to recover these solids. Baghouses, Cottrell treaters, and settling chambers are the common forms of plants used to recover solids from gases. To check on the efficiency of these plants it is necessary to know the volume of gas leaving the plant and the amount of solids carried by the gas. As the volume of gas is equal to the product of the velocity of that gas and the cross-sectional area of the flue, the determination of the volume includes the measurement of the area of the cross section and the determination of the velocity. The velocity is generally measured by means of the Pitot tube and Ellison differential pressure gage, although low velocities are best determined by means of an anemometer. The dust concentration is determined by passing a measured volume of sample through a filter and weighing the dust caught. From this the dust concentration per unit of volume may be calculated. It is necessary to assume that the gas is homogeneous or that each cubic foot of the gas contains the same weight of dust as every other cubic foot. Having the volume of gas passing through a flue per unit of time, and the dust concentration of the gas per unit of volume, the amount of solids may easily be calculated.

ECONOMIC utilization of all by-products has long been the goal of American industry. One of the first groups that was popularly supposed to have achieved its aim was the meat-packing industry, which reputedly found a use for everything except the squeal of the hog. To the metallurgist, slag has always been the principal wasted by-product, representing a loss not only of material, but of heat. Slag does not possess many qualities that appeal to man&apos;s imagination or suggest a romantic influence on the daily life and progress of a community or nation. It is a bulky product, and space for its disposal within reasonable hauling distance of a smelter is not always available; the iron-ore smelter especially has been wont to find space for slag disposal at a premium. Therefore, the success that has been attained in recent years in finding a use for iron blast-furnace slag is notable. It has become a vital economic factor in the construction industry in areas where it is available. Its use may suggest further possibilities of an economic outlet for the slags from nonferrous smelting as well.

THE winning of metals from Nature has been advanced to a degree of efficiency that commands admiration even in this Machine Age. Economy of human effort underground, in surface plants, and in treatment works, and better means of performing all manner of operations have cut costs and im¬proved products to an extent that seems far beyond the wildest imagin¬ings of those that labored in the days of hand mining and muscular metallurgy. Principles and methods borrowed from other professions and sciences - mechanical engineering, chemistry, and physics-all have con¬tributed to the rapid development of ore production and treatment, but no small part of the achievements must be credited to the free exchange of ideas within the industry itself and mass attack upon problems of mutual concern. The esprit de corps or class consciousness that has contributed so effectively to the progress of the metal industries has been less apparent among nonmetallic mineral producers. As a class they have been handicapped by inadequate contact with the metal-mining fraternity as well as among themselves.

Experiments in laboratory and mine have clearly demonstrated the usefulness of radioactivity detection for directly measuring the potassium content of potash ore as mined. This paper presents the results of these tests and documents the design of a system for automatically grading and sorting potash ore on the basis of radiation detection. It is shown how the experimental results in the subject mine lead directly to the design of this kind of an automatic control system. The system is capable of grading the ore with an accuracy of approximately ±2% K20 content or better. Due to the usual stratification of the ore body, mining potash seldom presents an extreme problem of gangue separation. Nevertheless, it is frequently necessary to transport within a potash mine and even hoist to the surface considerable quantities of halite and other valueless materials. Up to recent times it has been customary to recognize and route these materials by simple visual and manual techniques. However, the work reported here clearly demonstrates that it is now practical and economical to improve upon these techniques by continuous measurement1 of the naturally occurring radioactive isotope, potassium-40. It was the purpose of the work reported here to investigate this technique and assess its applicability. LOCALE OF EXPERIMENTS The work described here was carried out in a potash mine in Carlsbad, N.M. At the working face of this mine the potash ore is freed by blasting; it is then transported a short distance by shuttle car to a moving-belt system which conveys it to the main shaft where it is hoisted to the surface. Quantities of gangue which are also produced in the mining operation are disposed of in mined-out sections of the mine where possible. Otherwise, this material which contains only a small percentage of potassium (as K2O) must also be transported by the conveyor-belt system to the main shaft and then hoisted to the surface and discarded. With this situation, any measuring device for automatic control purposes must be capable of clearly distinguishing between gangue containing insignificant amounts of K2O and ore containing larger percentages of the same mineral. The conveyor-belt system transports the material from the mine face to a rotary crusher and then to temporary storage pits at the main shaft. This is shown in Fig. 1. Upon leaving the conveyor belt the material enters either one of the two storage pits according to the position of a manually operated gate. It was decided that all experiments should be carried out at the conveyor belt between the crusher and gate with a view to the possibility of providing a signal which could operate the gate automatically. THEORETICAL BASIS AND LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS In principle it is possible to grade potassium-bearing ore on the basis of radioactivity. Natural potassium contains 0.012% K40, which is radioactive with a half-life of 1.3 x 10&apos; years. Although about 89% of the K40 disintegrates to Ca40 by beta decay, the other 11% changes to Ar40 by electron capture and the emission of gamma rays. Unlike the ß-rays which are readily absorbed in the first few millimeters of ore surrounding the disintegrating nucleus, the y-ray photons will escape from an ore sample several inches in size. A detector rigidly mounted under a conveyor belt loaded with potash ore will intercept some constant fraction of all the photons emitted from the ore within its field of view. Under these

THE final casting of refined copper has been re-J- stricted for generations by the following sequence of operations: Filling the reverberatory furnace, melting, skimming, blowing or flapping, and poling. The hoped-for 24 hr cycle, producing 300 tons or more, has been taken up largely with the necessary bat time-consuming tasks of cleaning the bath, sulphur elimination, and in turn removal of excess oxygen to produce tough-pitch copper. Incidental to comparatively slow melting under combustion gases, copper oxides react with the furnace lining, and the slag so-formed must be completely recycled. The three-phase arc furnace has eliminated some of the cycle stages, and telescoped the remainder into a continuous operation. Electrical energy, supplied to graphite electrodes enclosed in high grade refractories, rapidly melts copper cathodes and sustains a stream of metal, containing approximately 0.01 pct oxygen, without contamination from fuel. The arc was struck on the first large electric furnace for melting copper in the United States on April 13, 1949. The earliest use of this type of furnace was at Copper Cliff, Ont., in 1936, and an admirable description of their installation has been published? Copper, melted in the Baltimore furnace, is used to cast billets, and the installation differs somewhat from the Canadian, as will be described. The arc furnace is a heavy-duty, three-phase furnace, holding 50 tons, the general outline of which appears on Fig. 1. The steel shell is 15 ft ID with a bottom radius of 14 ft 2 in. The roof, separate and distinct from the body, consists of a 15-ft water-cooled, cast-steel ring of the same outside diameter as the furnace. The center line of the furnace lies 9 ft 6 in. from that of the trunnions, permitting a 5" backward tilt for skimming, and a 40" maximum nose tilt forward for complete draining. Normally, the furnace overflows by displacement, and the use of the forward tilt arrangement is restricted to covering charging delays. The charging slot, 3 ft 8 in. x 5 in., lies on the north center line, the tap hole on the south, and the 30x30 in. skim door 45" to the west of the slot. The original 20-in. graphite electrodes were replaced with 14 in. in December 1949. Three conventional direct current winch drives, governed by electrical controls, position each electrode which has individual mast supports and counterweights. An independent circulation supplies cooling water for the electrode glands, the roof ring, charge slot, and the skim door frame. Arc Furnace Refractories Hearth: Fused-in monolithic bottoms had been used in copper arc furnaces, installed prior to April 1949. These consisted of thin layers of periclase, successively fused in place over preliminary brick courses. Heat was obtained from the arc, using a T-like arrangement of broken electrodes resting directly on the periclase to be fused. The operation, taking weeks to perform, was very expensive. The chemically-bonded magnesite-brick bottom, installed at Baltimore, was the first of its kind and a radical departure from previous practice. It consists of a 1 to 6-in. layer of castable refractory laid on the steel shell, modifying it to a 12 ft 2 in. bottom radius. Two courses of 9x2 % -in. fireclay straights and keys follow. The third course is made of 9-in. magnesite blocks of special shape to form circles of an inverted arch. It was started by a four piece keystone with skew-backs forming the outer course. The fourth course also started on a central keystone, or button, of four 90" segments, 12 in. diam x 13 Vz in. deep, and continued with 13%-in. blocks. Skewbacks at the shell completed the course to produce a horizontal surface for the side walls with a single course of No. 2 arch fireclay against the steel. Dry chrome-magnesite cement was brushed over each course after laying, and a 1-in. expansion space between the brick and the shell was filled with the same mixture. The total bottom thickness, excluding the castable material, was 5 in. of clay plus 22% in. of chemically-bonded magnesite. Tap Hole: A 5-in. OD and 3-in. ID silicon-carbide tube constitutes the tap hole and is set tangential to the upper course of the furnace bottom. Molten metal fills the tube when the furnace is level and filled to capacity. Side Walls: The lining, against the shell, consists of a 9x4Y2x3 in. soldier course of fireclay, using straights and No. 1 arches to turn the circles. A second soldier course of 9x4&apos;/2x2&apos;/2-in. fireclay was laid in a somewhat similar fashion. Three courses of 13Y2x6x3 in. and 9x6~3 in. of final magnesite, laid flat, completed the lining, using Nos. 1 and 2 keys to turn the circles. Cardboard spacers were placed between every two bricks in horizontal courses, and a thin coat of chrome-magnesite cement filled the joints between the firebrick and magnesite. A sprung-arch spanned the skim door with jambs of suitable magnesite shapes. Charge Slot: The slot is 3 ft 8 in. wide x 5 in. high. A silicon-carbide sill of special shapes has a 30" slope to allow cathodes to slide easily into the bath. The original arch was flat, and composed of Nos. 1 and 2 wedge magnesite with a 6-ft radius. It projected 5 in. over the sill, and, being a flat arch, gave an 18 15/16-in. opening between the inner edge and the metal line. The whole assembly was later raised 9 in., and the flat arch replaced with an arch, the lower edge of which maintained the 5-in, width from the outer to inner edges as shown in Fig. 2. A water-cooled, cast-copper jacket protects the steel shell behind the slot.

In 1937 the employees of the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd.. at Timmins. Ont., Canada, approached organized medicine for a plan to provide themselves and their families with a complete medical service including hospitalization. This approach was made because of two conditions: (1) the necessity for some organization whereby contributions could be made in instalments to offset the sudden and large expense connected with illness for which the average employee is not prepared, and (2) the need for a more cohesive quality of service to replace a contract practice then in vogue, which did not take care of the employee&apos;s family or dependents. In different parts of the United States and Canada similar plans were in force, not only for employed groups but for numbers of people in circumscribed areas. In Europe different countries had adopted various forms of health insurance plans. It then was no surprise that these employees as a group should ask for some similar plan. With the cooperation of the management, a plan was instituted. The plan has one object only—the provision of medical services, including the accessory services such as hospitaliza-tion, X-rays, nursing, and necessary drugs and medicines. It is not concerned with cash benefits, sickness and accident payments, or any form of monetary return as the result of illness, but is simply an organization to provide medical services and pay for them from a central fund. It is a nonprofit organization and the only shareholders are the employees and their families who contribute and who in turn receive services. The Hollinger plan is limited to the employees of the Hollinger mine, who live in Timmins and the immediate vicinity. At first, the membership was voluntary. In the third year, it was made a condition of employment, with the proviso that at the end of any Association financial year an employee may withdraw if he wishes to do so. After withdrawal, he cannot again become a member until the end of the next Association year, and then only by the payment of the back dues. This step was taken to ensure continuity, and to prevent employees from withdrawing when well and reentering when faced with impending illness or operations. The employee himself is subject to medical examination on application for employment, and if accepted is subject to further examination by a specialist in chest diseases under the Workmen&apos;s Compensation Board of Ontario. Thus it is possible to exclude those who have heart disease, tuberculosis, or other disabling conditions when first employed. Wives and families of employees are not subject to medical examination but other dependents of an employee—mother, father, or other relative—who are declared by the employee to be wholly dependent upon him must be examined. In the course of investigating the soft X-ray absorption spectra of Ni-A1 alloys, Das and ~zfiroff&apos; observed an anomalous brittleness in solid solutions containing 3 to 5 at. pct Al. The brittle alloys also had anomalously larger lattice constants&apos; and the fine structure at the nickel K edge of an alloy containing 3.96 at. pct A1 unexpectedly resembled that of NiA1 more closely than that of a solid solution containing 5.51 at. pct Al. This led them to suggest the possibility that short-range ordering was produced during the homogenization anneal to which each specimen was subjected, similar to that observed in dilute solutions of vanadium and of chromium in nickel: as the principal cause of embrittlement. It was decided to repeat the above measurements on several alloys in this composition range in order to test the above hypothesis and to establish the effect of heat treatment on the alloys&apos; properties. Three solid solutions in this range were prepared containing, respectively, 3.16, 4.00, and 4.54 at. pct Al, in addition to alloys containing 6 and 9 pct. All samples were annealed in vacuum at 1800°F for 100 hr and then furnace-cooled to room temperature, as in the original study. The lattice constants of these alloys are shown by open circles in Fig. 1 and can be seen to fit quite closely the curve established by the previously measured values, indicated by solid circles. (The experimental errors are of the order of the size of the circles, +o.oo~R.) The three alloys containing 3 to 5 at. pct A1 were found to be quite brittle, as previously reported. In order to test the possibility of ordering, these three solid solutions were again heated to 1800°F and, following a few hours at that temperature, were quenched directly to room temperature. All three alloys lost their brittleness. In order to verify the proposed ordering hypothesis, it was decided to subject each sample to several cycles of quenching and annealing (disordering and ordering). Adsorption of potassium dodecyl xanthate from aqueous solutions on artificial and natural zinc sul-fides was studied by means of infrared absorption spectroscopy. The adsorption species and their stabilities varied depending upon the conditions of the surfaces of the zinc sulfides. Adsorption products were analyzed after they had been removed from the surface with pyridine. Zinc dodecyl xanthate was confirmed for surfaces covered with oxidized products while dodecyl alcohol and carbon disulfide were detected on purified or weakly oxidized surfaces. It is of great significance to study the adsorbed species of collectors on the surface of sulfide minerals with a view of increasing our understanding of the mechanism of flotation. Compared with other methods, infrared spectroscopy promises to be of particular value in determining the nature of the species adsorbed at the mineral/solution interface since it gives direct identification of the adsorption products; and, furthermore, it has an advantage over the electron diffraction technique which has been employed in similar problems in that infrared spectroscopy utilizes radiation of very low energy so that the probability of changing the unstable surface films during examination should be correspondingly decreased. Infrared spectroscopic studies concerned with sulfide mineral flotation have already been reported by several investigators on zinc sulfide-hexanthi01&apos; and lead sulfide-xanthate2,3 systems. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the adsorption of potassium dodecyl xanthate (KDX) at the zinc sulfide-aqueous solution interface by means of infrared spectroscopy. Rarely is the pure zinc sulfide-xanthate system encountered in practical flotation since zinc sulfide is usually activated with small amounts of certain metallic ions, such as copper ion. However, investigation of the pure zinc sulfide-xanthate system appeared promising for studying the fundamental mechanism of the adsorption of xanthate on the sulfide minerals. Although there are few cases where xanthates having an alkyl radical higher than hexyl are employed in practical operations, KDX was used in this study since it was reported that the adsorbability of xanthate on zinc sulfide was increased with an increasing number of carbon atoms of the alkyl radicals.4 EXPERIMENTAL Samples: Experiments were made on artificial zinc sulfide and natural sphalerite. The artificial zinc sulfide was obtained commercially from Dainihon Toryo Co. as a fluorescent pigment of the purest grade A. Considering the fact that there are often cases where the surface of sulfide minerals are apt to be oxidized so that the adsorption of xanthate at sulfide mineral/solution interfaces may be substantially affected, two different procedures were employed in preparing the samples of the artificial zinc sulfide. 1) The zinc sulfide was washed with hot concentrated ammonium chloride solution (300 g per liter) to remove surface oxidation products and followed by washing with deoxygenated hot distilled water by centrifugation until the constant electric conductivity of the solution was reached (Sample I) (specific conductivity of the solution = 8.6 x l0-5 ohm-&apos; cm-&apos;). 2) Sample I in a suspension of 5% by weight was oxidized with a 1.5% aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution for about one hour, and then was washed with distilled water as mentioned in the preparation of Sample I (Sample 11) (specific conductivity of the solution = 1.0 x 10"4 ohm-&apos; cm-&apos;). Both Samples I and II were dried under vacuum and stored in a vacuum desiccator. The specific surface areas of the samples determined by the BET method using carbon dioxide gas were 19 x l04 cm2 per g for Sample I and 35 x l04 cm2 per g for Sample 11. In addition, a sample which was derived from Sample I was also prepared. In 40 ml of 3 x 10-2 M zinc sulfate solution was placed 2 g of Sample I for 2 hours, washed with distilled water by successive centrifugation until no sulfate ion could be detected and dried under vacuum (Sample 111).
