In the course of studies made on the Ti-Cu alloy system,' particles identified visually as TiH were encountered unexpectedly in a specimen of high-purity Ti-0.8Cu alloy. The particles did not appear immediately after preparation, but following-storage in a dessicator for several days. Since the alloy had been vacuum annealed to a low hydrogen concentration (19 ppm by vacuum-fusion analysis), the appearance of the TiH particles was suspected as a surface contamination effect. A specimen of a Ti-0.8Cu alloy had been annealed 2 hr at 790°C and water quenched, to produce the single-phase equiaxed a structure. The metallo-graphic sample was ground through 600X paper, rough-polished on a high-speed wheel with a mixture of alumina and chromic acid, awLhish-polished on a slow-speed wheel. Disturbed metal layers were removed from the final surface by alternately etching with a 1 1/2 HF-3 1/2 HNO3-95 H2O solution and polishing on the slow-speed wheel with fine alumina. The final surface was swab-etched with a 1 1/2 HF-3 1/2 HNO3-95 H2O solution, rinsed in tap water, and dried in a stream of filtered air. The micro-structure, shown in Fig. 1, was composed of equiaxed a grains without any trace of second phase. After storage in a dessicator for 3 days, the appearance of small particles in the structure became evident (see Fig. 2). After 7 days of storage, the particles were more distinct, and in some grains, began to appear as elongated particles. The specimen then was etched a second time (without repolishing) to produce the structure shown in Fig. 4. On the basis of micro- structural observation, the line markings were identified as TiH; attempts to obtain diffraction patterns from the surface for positive identification were not successful. That the structure is a surface effect was demonstrated by grinding with 240X paper to remove the surface layer. The surface then was ground, polished, and etched using the procedures described previously. The same observations were made: the freshly prepared surface was devoid of any second phase, whereas the particles again appeared after several days storage. The same effect has been observed in other a-stabilized titanium alloys, including a high-purity Ti-0.20 alloy containing only 16 ppm H by analysis. The effect has not yet been observed in unalloyed titanium, nor does its appearance appear to be consistent with any particular alloy system. From these observations, it is concluded that certain a-titanium alloys are susceptible to the formation of titanium hydride at the surface of metallo-graphic specimens. Calculating machines permit the use of the more rapid cotangent and semigraphic solutions of plane triangulation. The results of these methods are as accurate as those of other methods. Simple adjustment of the net, and ease of calculation encourage more complete field work. Errors in field work or in computation are easily localized.

In plant tests with a 9.7 m hearth diameter high top pressure blast furnace the influence of disintegration of sinter during low-temperature reduction on blast furnace performance was evaluated. The blast furnace burden during the test period consisted of 74% self-fluxing sinter with a basicity of CaO/Si02 = 1.3, 15% pellets, 6% lump ore, and 5% recirculated slags. The sinter for the test was produced in a modern sinter plant. By changing the fuel rate and/or the MgO content at a constant basicity CaO/Si02 sinters with different low-temperature disintegration properties could be produced. The blast furnace was equipped with pressure monitoring devices at medium height of the furnace stack wall. This device provided in addition to the normal operating data readings of pressure losses in the upper and lower part of the furnace. The basic physico-chemical factors determining low-temperature disintegration are explained. The testing devices and the extent of quality control measures of sinter during the test period are outlined. Conclusions are drawn from the plant test in relation to sinter properties.

The importance of semikilled steel as a high tonnage grade has long been recognized. The increasing severity of the applications for which semikilled steel is used makes it desirable to obtain further information regarding the features of open hearth practice and ingot structure that can affect steel performance in subsequent rolling and fabricating operations. Accordingly, an investigation is being carried out studying the structure of various types of semikilled steel ingots. This paper reviews some of the observations made and information gathered in this investigation. By definition, semikilled steel may be considered to include all nonrimming steels in which the natural shrinkage occurring during ingot solidification is offset to an appreciable degree by gas formation. Accordingly, this type of steel includes the entire range intermediate between rimmed and fully killed steel. The resultant ingot structures range from those of steels that have been capped to suppress a weak rimming action to those steels that have been killed in the furnace or ladle to the extent that no mold deoxidizer is required. A survey reported to the 1946 -AIME Open Hearth Conference' reviewed the practices being used at 28 major plants for the deoxidation of semikilled steel. It was found that most plants divide the deoxidizing additions between the ladle and the mold—many of the plants adding only minor amounts of deoxidizer to the bath or none at all. Silicon, aluminum and titanium were the only elements used for ladle and mold deoxidation. Mold deoxidizers were added as capping additions or as uniformly fed additions. Several practices were reported in which the steel was deoxidized in the ladle to the extent that little or no mold deoxidation was needed. No reference was made to grades capped by using special mold designs or special closures over the top of molds. .Accordingly, specific examples of this type of practice will not be considered in this paper. It appeared from this survey of deoxidation practice that semikilled steel can be divided into three types, namely, capped semikilled, in which aluminum is added near the end of pour or after shut-off, intermediate semikilled steels, in which aluminum is fed uniformly throughout the pour, and semikilled steels requiring no mold deoxidation. In an attempt to cover the ingot structures obtained by the range of practices reported in the preceding survey, three series of experimental heats were made using increasing amounts of aluminum, silicon and titanium for ladle deoxidizers. The ladle deoxidizers were added as stick aluminum, 50 pct ferrosilicon and 20 pct ferrotitanium (4 pct carbon), respectively. Two methods of studying ingot structures were used. Ingots were removed from production, burned longitudinally and machined to allow observation of the central pipe and coarse blowholes. (communication to the Secretary*). -We must keep in mind, in balancing the savings-to be anticipated by the most efficient combustion of gas, the best heat absorption by stoves or boilers, and by heat conservation of the thermal equivalent carried in. blast-furnace gas-against the cost in operation, maintenance, depreciation and interest charges of the equipment required to realize the savings, that in boilers and hot-blast stoves we are basing our economies upon two different, combustion phenomena. In a boiler, evaporating water at a heat efficiency of 70 per cent., approximately 47,550 B.t.u. is consumed per boiler horsepower. Taking the blast, furnace gas cited in the above paper, we are using about 38 ¾ lb. of cold-washed gas per boiler horsepower. Using the hot-cleaned gas, the same equivalent heat is furnished by 34 1b. of the gas , This leaves of the 38 ¾ lb. required in the case of cold-washed gas, 4 ¾ lb. or 6,650 B.t.u. available for raising more steam when dry-hot gas is used, which means that an equivalent amount of coal firing can be dispensed with. Per ton of iron, this figure 2/3 X 12,000/38.75 X 4.75 = 980 lb. gas or 1,372,000 B.t.u. or 100 lb. coal. At $1.50 per ton of coal, the net saving per ton of pig iron produced by the use of dry-hot over wet-cold cleaning will, therefore, be about $0.06 2/3. At a stove heating 8,500 lb. of air per toil iron from 150° F., one-quarter of the dry-hot cleaned gas, or 3,000 lb., would heat the air to 1,450° F. 3,000 X 1,400 X 0.70 = (8,500 X 0.255) = 1,300. The cold-wet gas would heat the same amount of air to 1,280° F. 3,000 X 1,225 X 0.70 = (8,500 X.0.255) = 1,130.

BRADLEY*-AS I recall, the first portable units for ultra-violet light of practical use with scheelite were developed at the Nevada-Massachusetts Tungsten Mine at Mill City, Nevada, and were used underground. Ultra-violet lamps are also installed there in the mill, above the gravity-concentration tables, for control observations. Geologic Interpretation of Magnetic Exploration on the Mesabi Range, Minnesota ROBERT B. SOSMAN*-When artificial precipitated magnetite is oxidized at a temperature in the vicinity of 100°C, the oxide is converted into a chocolate brown ferric oxide of the formula Fe2O3, free from ferrous iron, yet possessing the same magnetic susceptibility as the original Fe3O4. This form of Fe2O3 is variously called "ferromagnetic ferric oxide," " maghemite," or "gamma ferric oxide," and has been found as a natural mineral. If a body of magnetite in the Biwabik were to oxidize to this form, the oxidized and leached ore body might successfully conceal itself from Mr. Jones' survey by this ferromagnetic pretense. So far, gamma ferric oxide has not been found on the Minnesota iron ranges. WHEN a liquid alloy freezes, the solid first formed usually differs widely in chemical composition from that last formed, so that there is segregation in the alloy as cast. For example in the copper-nickel system (fig. 1) the first solid formed from a liquid containing 55 atomic pct Cu may contain as little as 38 pct Cu, while the last must contain well over 55 pct. Three factors may act to decrease segregation from the maximum possible. 1. Diffusion in the cooling solid tends to make the phase homogeneous, decreasing segregation. This may be important at slow rates of cooling. 2. Segregation is impossible without diffusion in the liquid. At extremely rapid rates of cooling there may not be enough time to allow maximum segregation. 3. Supercooling delays nucleation to temperatures well below the liquidus thereby decreasing segregation. Hence the first nucleus in the copper-nickel system may contain well over 38 pct Cu. At sufficient supercooling the first nucleus may form below the solidus, in which case there is no reason to expect any segregation whatever. From these considerations, we could predict that at sufficiently low rates of cooling the alloy would be unsegregated because of factor 1 and at sufficiently high rates of cooling there should also be no segregation because of factors 2 and 3. Considerable segregation should occur only at intermediate rates of cooling. We have demonstrated experimentally that segregation can be completely suppressed by rapid rates of cooling. For the alloys studied, however, these rates are too great to be attained in any commercial practice. An alloy of 55 atomic pct Cu, 45 atomic pct Ni was frozen by cooling at varying rates. The degree of segregation in the solid was determined by X-ray diffraction photographs. Slow rates were obtained by slowly cooling the furnace containing the liquid alloy; fast rates by pouring or ejecting droplets of the alloy into water or iced sodium hydroxide solutions. The cooling rate of the droplets can be cal-culated from their dimensions by assuming reason- able values of thermal conductivity.' The experi-ments were repeated with an alloy of 16.5 pct Cu and 83.5 pct Au. A single experiment also showed a 50 atomic pct Bi-Sb alloy had no segregation at the most rapid quench. The position of back-reflection X-ray diffraction lines is a highly sensitive function of the lattice constant, which in turn depends on the chemical composition of the phase. A phase of varying composition will give broad diffraction lines. By measuring the edges of these lines and making suitable corrections for intrinsic line width, it is possible to determine the range of lattice constants represented. These can be converted to chemical compositions from a lattice constant vs. composition curve. Results are shown in table I. In the copper-nickel system the greatest segregation is found at the slowest cooling rates, where the lowest percentage of copper theoretically possible is found. In the copper-gold system, on the other hand, the degree of segregation is decidedly less at the slowest rates of cooling, being greatest at 11,100°C per sec. At no rate is the theoretically lowest percentage of copper (12 pct) found. At the rates of cooling found in sand and die castings the degree of segregation is large and depends little on the rate of cooling. In a recent paper, Gaudin and Meloy1 derived a size distribution function for single, impact fracture. Mular2 extended the use of this size distribution to describe the output of carefully controlled grinding experiments. As it stands, the function is difficult to compute. Consequently, a series of tables of the function are presented below: where M(x) is the cumulative fraction finer than size x when x is particle size. Weight percents are tabulated for the single parameter, r, in three different size ranges: from 0 to 1, from 1 to 10 and from 10 to 100. Tables I, II and III are cumulative percent finer and Tables IV, V and VI are for weight percent passing screen size x, retained on the screen below. SOME months ago one of the authors was asked to write a paper on the heat treatment of steel castings that would be more comprehensive than other matter lie had published; this is an attempt to present in condensed form the results of experimental work and actual practice carried out for the most part in 1907, 1908; and 1909. It is not a laboratory research and the work done was carried out for the express purpose of putting in practice the processes discovered as fast as possible. Most of the tests are the result of commercial practice and not of bars annealed in our laboratory; most of the micrographs were made for our own records and not for publication. Certain of the micrographs, therefore, are not as clear as we may wish but they were good enough for our purpose at the time they were made. The tests and micrographs are selected from several thousands in our files. All of these micrographs are magnified 60 diameters. These experiments were conducted almost entirely on steel made in a 3-ton bottom-blown converter, and most of the steel illustrated analyzes about 0.05 in phosphorus and sulfur. Unfortunately, a certain number of specimens are shown of which we do not have the complete analysis, but in most cases in which the phosphorus and sulfur vary much from the figure just given that fact is noted. For purposes of comparison, we have included a certain number of micrographs and tests of steel made in the electric furnace, some of which were from specimens made in other shops and some in our own shop, and some tests of acid open-hearth and tropenas steel.

Uranium mining and milling are rather new industries in Wyoming and South Dakota, but, in the past 15 years, ore valued at more than $400,000,000 has been mined and milled in the region. The major uranium deposits are in structural and/ or erosional basins or on the flanks of uplifts. The principal host rocks are medium- to coarse-grained sandstones that were deposited in continental or brackish-water environments and were derived in large part from the granitic cores of the uplifts and the sedimentary rocks that flank the cores. The ages of the host rocks range from Cretaceous to Miocene, but more than 95 per cent of the known reserves in the region are in rocks of early Eocene age. The bulk of the ore in the region is unoxidized and lies below the water table; some oxidized ore has been mined in the Powder River Basin and Black Hills districts. The unoxidized ore comprises pyrite, uraninite and/ or coffinite, marcasite, hematite, jordisite(?), and selenium. Minerals in the oxidized ore include hydrous uranium carbonates, phosphates, and sulfates and hydrous uranium and/ or vanadium silicates. The deposits are in the form of ore rolls that contain from a few hundred to a few hundred thousand tons of ore, ranging in grade from 0.1 per cent to 1.0 per cent U3O8. The rolls are at the margins of large tabular bodies of sandstone that has been altered by the orebearing solutions. The deposits are believed to have resulted from the interaction of an alkaline; oxidizing, ore-bearing ground water and a reducing environment. Exploration guides include the spatial relations of ore to altered sandstone, favorable lithology in the host rock, the content of certain elements and/ or compounds in ground water, and the relation of deposits to major paleodrainages.

The Washoe plant, 1 in Anaconcla. Mont., together with the local street-railroad, ranches a. foundry and machine-shop a brick-plant and the Montana hotel, form a property under one management; to which should be added the mines in Butte owned by the company, from which part of the ore-supply of the plant comes. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co., controlled by the Amalgamated Copper Co., was reorganized under the laws of Montana in 1893. A map of the plant, showing the numerous departments and illustrating the details of tracks, pipe-lines, and charging-stations for compressed-air locomotives, is given in Fig. 1.

THE MgCu2 type Laves phase has been observed in the thorium-osmium and thorium-iridium systems. Two alloys corresponding to ThOs2 and ThIr, were prepared by arc melting a 5-g charge in a water-cooled copper. crucible. Both alloys were very brittle. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained using filtered Cu and Co radiation with a Straumanis-type DeBye-Scherrer camera. The a,, values as shown in Table I were obtained by a Nelson-Riley extrapolation. The structure belongs to space group Oh7-Fd3m. Relative intensities for each of these compounds were calculated on the assumption that 8 thorium atoms occupy (a) positions and 16 osmium or irid-ium atoms occupy (d) positions. The operation of Kennecott 's Bingham Canyon copper precipitation plant, one of the world's largest, is described. This description includes a brief historical review of precipitation at Bingham and the general layout and operation of the present cone cementation facility. Current practices are based on results of studies undertaken to define improvements needed in each unit operation. These improvements were required to meet changing plant conditions and were implemented primarily within the constraints of the existing facilities. Specific unit operations included were the cone precipitators, the cone discharge thickener, the cone effluent settling basins, and the plate and frame filter presses. As a result of these improvements, loss of precipitated copper decreased and the degree of precipitation increased, raising copper recovery by 9 t/d. At the same time, iron consumption was reduced by 22.5 t/d. Problems in drying the cement copper were also overcome so that a product containing 12-15% moisture could be consistently delivered for smelting.

The upswing in oil production and drilling activity in Illinois that began in 1937 gained momentum in 1938 and promises to bring a new and higher peak in the state's annual production in 1939. In 1938 the production totaled 23,929,000 bbl., as compared with 7,426,000 bbl. in 1937, more than a threefold increase. The number of producing oil wells in the new fields was 230 at the end of 1937 and it increased to 2157 at the end of 1938. Daily production for the whole state increased from approximately 35,000 bbl. at the end of 1937 to approximately 135,000 bbl. at the end of 1938, nearly a fourfold increase. Of a total of 2539 wells completed in 1938 in Illinois, 1984 produced oil, 26 produced gas and 529 were dry holes. Of the total, 377 are classified as "wildcat" wells, defined as wells drilled outside of proved territory and more than one mile from the nearest production. The remainder, 2162 wells, were drilled in or near proved fields. Of the 377 wildcat wells (Table 2) 32 were successful in discovering oil or gas in commercial quantities, either new fields or extensions of old fields. Four of these discovery wells mere gas wells, which are not yet commercially productive owing to lack of pipe-line facilities. A special effort was made to ascertain the reasons for the locations of as many as possible of the wildcat wells and the results of this investigation are set forth in the following table:

COUNTRY RISK ANALYSIS A company operating in a foreign country assumes all the risks that it would at home. However, beyond these, it assumes risks that arise from the unique political economic, financial conditions of the foreign country which it operates. These risks are known as "country risks". The importance of these risks has grown appreciably in the recent past (particularly in the aftermath of Iran's revolution in the late 1970s and Mexico's debt rescheduling of 1982-83), and as a result, country risk analysis has become an increasingly useful management tool. Country risk analysis seeks to assess the probability that countries will service their aggregate foreign liabilities on time, as well as the probability that country conditions could inhibit the debt service capability of private sector debtors. This involves assessment of both the ability and the willingness of countries to meet their external liabilities in a timely fashion. "Ability" is linked economic and financial variables: principally, a country's economic structure, foreign exchange generating capacity and debt service burden. On the other hand, "willingness" is tied to political factors: mainly the economic/financial orientation of government policy and the stability of economic decision making. Ability: Economic, Financial Conditions and Prospects Judgement of a country's ability to meet foreign financial obligations begins with a detailed study of a country's external balance sheet which compares the country's foreign liabilities and assets. Table 1 below presents country balance sheets for Mexico, Korea and Indonesia. On the other hand, the relationship between Korea's external liabilities and assets ($50.5 billion and $7 billion, respectively), is more favorable and helps explain why Korea has been able to meet debt service payments and maintain its access to the international capital markets. Indonesia has even a more favorable relationship between its foreign assets and liabilities, $31 billion and $9 billion, respectively, and its debt is mostly lower interest rate, non-bank debt, making for a less onerous debt service burden. After the balance sheet, the analysis turns to a comparison of the country's foreign exchange earning capacity and its prospective financing requirements, that is, the country's future earnings stream
